Editorial 31st August 2013 v. Burscough F.C. F.A.CUP Preliminary Round WELCOME It is another historic occasion for our club today as we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Burscough FC, another club with an enviable non league history including an FA Trophy win just a decade ago in 2003. Today’s game was the prize for winning our last round tie against Abbey Hey and we look forward to the challenge of pitting our wits, skills and tactics against Evo Stik opposition for the first time this season, friendlies apart. Burscough have started the season quietly a bit like ourselves but we know from those pre-season friendlies in July, that teams at this level always have a resilience and defensive quality which is difficult to penetrate and at the other end some clinical finishing which severely punishes mistakes. We will need to be at our very best. However, it is great day for WEST and one we shall all enjoy immensely as we aim to give a good account of ourselves and take things from today’s game into our various league fixtures. The winners of today’s game also have home advantage in the next round against either Atherton Collieries or Radcliffe Borough. REPLAY ARRANGEMENTS There is no extra time in today’s game and if a replay is necessary this will be held at Burscough FC next Tuesday at 7.45pm. Coincidentally this is a ground we might have been visiting anyway had we not been promoted as Formby are ground sharing at Burscough this season. SEPTEMBER FIXTURES We are at home again next Saturday 7th against AFC Blackpool at 3pm before traveling to Wigan Robin Park the following weekend on Saturday 14th with both these games being against opposition close to us at the wrong end of the league table. The following Tuesday 17th September to Bredbury to renew acquaintance with Stockport Sports [previously Woodley Athletic and Woodley Sports] for the first time in a league fixture since both our clubs were in the Lancs and Cheshire Amateur League many moons ago. Tuesday 24th sees the return of Abbey Hey for an evening league fixture and on Saturday 28th we are on our travels again this time to Runcorn Town, a club we last played some years back when our respective youth teams were neck and neck in Timperley league and cup competitions. ADVANCE NOTICE - THE FA VASE We are away on the other side of the Pennines in the FA Vase on Sat 21st September when we play either Pennistone Church from Sheffield or Rossington Main from near Doncaster. We will be running a coach to this game so keep an eye out for details. Departure will be from near The Bowling Green on Brookburn Road and as soon as opponents are confirmed these will be posted along with travel details at: www.clubwebsite.co.uk/westdidsburychorlton/

ENJOY THE THRILLS AND SPILLS AND EXCITEMENT OF THE FA CUP! PLEASE NOTE THAT ALCOHOLIC DRINKS MUST BE CONSUMED AT THE CLUBHOUSE ONLY. Thanks you for your co-operation. The front cover picture: Last action from Callum Schofield before his trip! Our thanks to Mike Fryer for providing photos again this season for the web and programme.

View from the Dugout Once again today is a day about making history for our club as we welcome Burscough who are a team with a huge history and tradition having won the FA Trophy at Wembley in 2003. For us this is a new adventure and there is no pressure on the lads. We’ve told the players that we can enjoy our day by working hard in front of what we expect as a decent crowd, give a good account of ourselves and hopefully pull off an upset. This is an excellent opportunity to show everyone how good we really are and genuinely believe that we have players at our club who can play at the level of Burscough. It is up to us to work hard, put in a performance and hopefully carry all the positives from the game and spur us on in the league. I thought we played very well against Abbey Hey in the last round, against a side who have had a better start in the league than us, and to score a couple of goals and keep a clean sheet gave us a real boost. I thought both our wing backs, Richmond Botchey and Callum Jones, were excellent, and it just shows that we can more than match sides at this level. Unfortunately it for us it was not the same story against Glossop where we withstood the early pressure only to be punished for a mistake and let Glossop take the lead. It was always going to be an uphill battle after that and although we had 5 players missing from our starting line-up the players that did play put a shift in and we can feel unlucky to have come away with a defeat against a side with a big budget who are looking to finish in a top six position. Today’s focus in the programme is on Anthony Potts. I have to say that I think he has been a tremendous player for us and considering we knew nothing about him before he came here has been one of the most consistent players week in week out. Pottsy is someone you always know exactly what you are going to get from and has been one our best players again this season. He is quick, strong, both the game and passes the ball well and that is why he was rewarded with the captains’ armband at Glossop. Today is sure to be a special occasion for everyone involved in the club and come the final whistle I hope that we will be able to talk about another one in the near future. Andy Nelson --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------At today’s game there will be a bucket collection in support of Alan Oliver’s journey to Wembley and appeal to raise funds for Christie Hospital. We are pleased to support this and ask everyone to please make a contribution. All proceeds from the collection go direct to:

Quotes from the FA Cup First Extra - Preliminary Round West Didsbury & Chorlton 2 Abbey Hey 0 West Didsbury & Chorlton manager Andy Nelson: "I felt we could have scored more goals, although the goals we scored came at important times for us. I was impressed with the way Abbey Hey tried to play, they are a good team and are not just a kick and rush side. "I'm pleased because we have been playing really well, and just not getting results we deserved, it's not as if we have been shown up as not being up to playing at this level. "Now we have a home tie against Burscough to look forward to, which is great for a small club like us. Four years ago when I came to help out here, we were playing in the Manchester League First Division, and now we are preparing to face a side like Burscough. If someone had said to me then we would be playing that sort of opposition in the FA Cup four years later, I wouldn't have believed them". Abbey Hey manager Luke Gibson: "On the ball, our quality could have been a lot better but we still created enough chances to get a goal. But off the ball we were nowhere near as good as we should have been and that is what cost us. "We tried to get a reaction from the lads in the second half (after being a goal down at half time) but to concede a second goal so early after the break killed any reaction we were hoping to get. After losing to West in the First Division Trophy final last season, they are proving to be a bogey team for us, but I'm glad for Andy because they don't deserve to be where they are in the league, and hopefully this will give them a kick start to their season".

First Team Match Reports… Tuesday 20th August – Glossop North End: 1, WEST: 0 A threadbare WEST side missing no fewer than eight first team players went down1-0 at Glossop North End thanks to a freak goal. A game of few chances was settled in the first half when WEST goalkeeper Ross Booth received a rocket of a back pass from Steve Brockley and in attempting to clear the ball first time hit it straight to the oncoming Glossop striker Tom Bailey who finished clinically into the bottom corner on 30 minutes. It was a frustrating goal to concede as WEST had weathered the early Glossop storm and had begun to get a foothold in the game. The second half was a more even affair with WEST’s best chance coming from a brilliant back heel from substitute Joshua Chisambo for Steve Settle to run onto and his resultant cross was knocked narrowly wide. The fight back was ended 5 minutes from time as Alex Baird was red carded. Baird had been on the receiving end of a two footed challenge from Glossop full back Harry Brockarie but as the referee reached for the red card he showed it to the disbelieving Baird. Despite this further league setback WEST moved up a place by virtue of Wigan Robin Park’s 0-8 thrashing at the hands of AFC Liverpool. Saturday 24th August – WEST: 1, Congleton Town: 0 WEST at last secured the full 3 points their play deserved when they overcame a stubborn Congleton Town side thanks to a 37th minute winning header from Tommy Walsh. WEST went closest in the opening stages and early on a Steve Settle pile driver looked destined for the top corner only for the visiting keeper to tip the ball over at the last minute. The home side continued to make the running and deservedly went ahead from a vicious Gaz Thomas corner which Tommy Walsh buried with a great header giving the keeper no chance. As the first half ended WEST turned round with a 1-0 advantage which was the least their play deserved. Indeed it could and should have been a two goal advantage but for another close range Schofield miss to add to this season’s catalogue of spurned chances. The second period was more of the same as WEST maintained a good shape and the bulk of possession as Congleton struggled to make any impression. On 65 minutes a second goal looked inevitable when the keeper could only parry a free kick and the follow up lob was cleared from under the bar by some last ditch defending. Summers and Baldwin Willis also went close to adding to the score and at the other end Congleton’s only serious attempt at goal was an effort from 20 yards blasted wide by No8 Sephton. This was another encouraging performance hard on the heels of the FA CUP win and the gutsy showing at Glossop and the fully deserved 3 points moved us up the table in the right direction as other teams around us struggled to gain points. There is definitely more to come as the squad settles down and injured players recover, but this result again shows that we have strength in depth and that there is a great determination and team spirit at the club.

Our visitors… Burscough The first Burscough Association Football Club was formed in 1880, playing in Liverpool & District League football before folding in 1900. In 1905 Burscough Rangers were founded and moved to the present Mart Lane ground in 1908. They established many of the traditions carried on by the current club, playing in green and known as the Linnets. In the 1920s they had tremendous success winning the Liverpool County Combination Championship three times. In 1926 Rangers purchased a grandstand from Everton and erected it on Victoria Park. The following year they joined the Lancashire Combination but never experienced the same level of success and began to run into financial difficulties, finally folding in 1935. Following the Second World War the present Burscough club was founded in 1946, starting life in the Liverpool County Combination and by the end of the decade had made a major impact in the non-league soccer world. In only their second season, 1946/47, they achieved a unique treble, winning the Lancashire Junior Cup, George Mahon Cup and the Liverpool Challenge Cup. Two years later they again claimed the Junior Cup and also won the County Combination title for the first time. In 1952 they won the Liverpool Challenge Cup for a second time. In 1953/54 Burscough joined the Lancashire Combination winning the Second Division Championship in their first season and scoring 155 goals in the process. 1955/56 saw arguably the club’s greatest ever achievement as they won the First Division Championship of a league containing giants of the non-league world such as Wigan Athletic. Another milestone was reached in 1959 when they reached the First Round Proper of the F.A. Cup for the first time before going down 3-1 to Crewe Alexandra in front of a 4,200 gate at Victoria Park. Another trophy winning spell commenced in 1966/67 season under manager Bobby Langton, the former England winger, as the club completed a hat trick of Junior Cup successes against South Liverpool at Wigan. The Lancashire Combination First Division title was regained in 1969/70 season. In 1970/71 Burscough joined the Cheshire County League, finishing runners-up to Rossendale United. The following season they won the Liverpool Non-League Senior Cup and in 1974/75 the Cheshire League Cup was lifted. The Linnets also reached the F.A. Cup First Round Proper on three other occasions. In 1977, a 1 -0 defeat at Blyth Spartans, in 1979, a 3-0 defeat at Sheffield United in front of 14,000 spectators and in 1980, a 21 defeat against Altrincham. In 1982 the Club became founder members of the North West Counties Football League and had the distinction of becoming the Leagues first ever Champions under Bryan Griffiths. A new grandstand seating 250 was built in 1986 to replace the old wooden stand which had stood for 60 years and no longer met ground safety regulations. In 1989/90 season Burscough were to suffer their first ever relegation, however, the appointment of Russ Perkins as manager in 1991 was to bring about a change in the club’s fortunes as Burscough reached the League Cup Final and gained promotion back to Division One. In 1992/93 Burscough lost 2-1 to Conference bound Southport in the Liverpool Senior Cup Final at Goodison Park before 2,000 spectators. Success was achieved by winning the League Challenge Cup with a 2-1 victory over Nantwich Town. 1993/94 was one of the most eventful seasons in Burscough’s history as three players, Gary Martindale, Kevin Formby and Alex Russell, joined Football League clubs for substantial fees. Further covered standing accommodation for 500 spectators was erected at Victoria Park during the close season. In May 1995, Burscough appointed John Davison as Manager. In his first season Burscough went on to win the League Challenge Cup for the second time, beating League Champions Flixton 1-0 at Bury. In 1996/97 season the club celebrated its Golden Jubilee with a dinner attended by nearly 200 former players and officials and also published a 320 page club history, ‘Green Village Heroes.’ Frank Parr completed 50 years with the Club and was presented with The Football Association 50 Year Long Service Award. The following season after finishing runners-up in the North West Counties League the club made history by being promoted to the Unibond League. They also won the League Floodlit Trophy and reached the final of the Liverpool Senior Cup against Liverpool. Promotion to the dizzy heights of the Unibond League Premier Division in 1999/2000 season exceeded most supporters wildest dreams as Burscough went through the season unbeaten away from home and lost only two games in total. In 2000/01 season the Linnets won the Liverpool Senior Cup for the first ever time after beating Conference side Southport.

Burscough History continued The club has a youth development programme second to none in the non-league game and one graduate, 19 year old Lee McEvilly, signed for Rochdale in December 2001 for a club record £20,000 fee. Within 116 days of signing McEvilly had won full international honours for Northern Ireland against Spain. Following the resignation of John Davison the club appointed Shaun Teale as player/manager in May 2002 and the ex-Aston Villa defender went on to sensationally lead the club to its greatest ever achievement as Burscough became the smallest club to ever win the FA Trophy following a tremendous 2-1 victory over Tamworth at Villa Park on Sunday 18th May 2003. Played in front of a crowd of 14,296 spectators and televised live on Sky it was the Linnet’s twelfth game in an unforgettable cup run that had included one incredible result as the 400-1 outsiders shocked the non-league world by beating runaway Conference winners Yeovil Town 2-0 at Huish Park in the quarter-finals. There were incredible scenes as almost 2,000 fans welcomed the team home to Victoria Park that evening but celebrations were dampened less than six weeks later as the club found it necessary to relinquish Teale of his managerial duties. Former Liverpool, Galatasary and West Ham United midfielder Mike Marsh was appointed manager but after a poor start to the season Marsh resigned and ex-Southport defender Derek Goulding took over in October 2003. An incredible end to 2003/04 season saw Burscough finish with a remarkable run of victories that saw them claw their way out of the bottom three into the play-offs for Conference North. Despite playing all their games away from home the Linnets went on to reach the play-off final where they only went down at Bradford Park Avenue following extra-time. During the summer Frank Parr stepped down after 30 years as chairman with local businessman Chris Lloyd taking over at the helm. The following season ended in controversy as the Linnets were denied a play-off place following a widely ridiculed decision to award three points for unplayed games against Spennymoor United who could not complete their fixtures. Season 2005/06 was another historic one for Burscough F.C. as they went on to reach the Second Round proper of the F.A. Cup for the first time in their history. In reaching that milestone they defeated League One side Gillingham 3-2 on a never to be forgotten day at Victoria Park. Further excitement was to follow as a postponed 2nd round tie at Burton Albion allowed Burscough to appear in the Third round draw. That draw, should they have overcome Burton Albion, would have given the Linnets a home tie against the mighty Manchester United. Sadly that further dream never materialised as Burton Albion overcame the Linnets in the re-arranged tie. Having started the season impressively, with Burscough being amongst the favourites for promotion, the season unfortunately never quite reached the heights of the F.A. Cup run and long term injuries to key players meant the team finished 7th. Derek Goulding`s tenure as manager ended in June 2006 when he was replaced by former Southport manager, Liam Watson. The 2006/07 season was Burscough F.C`s Diamond Jubilee and one of the ways the club marked the event was by playing in a predominantly white kit with a specially designed badge. The season was one of the most succesful in history when the Linnets won the Unibond Northern Premier Division and the Lancashire Co-Op Trophy, formerly the Lancashire Junior Cup, for the first time in 40 years when neighbours Marine were defeated. The league success was only confirmed after a thrilling climax. On the last day of the season the Linnets won at A.F.C. Telford United in front of nearly 6,000 fans. The victory meant they overhauled the New Bucks Head side at the top of the table and won the title on goal difference by just 1 goal from Witton Albion. Further and final success came when Unibond First Division champions Buxton were defeated 3-1 in the Peter Swailes Memorial Shield to round off a great season and confirm Burscough as Treble Winners. In their first season in Conference North, Burscough finished in a very creditable 8th position but manager Liam Watson and many of the players departed during the close season. Assistant manager Joey Dunn took over as manager in July 2008, but was replaced by Andy Mutch at the beginning of October. Burscough finished next to bottom of the league and were relegated back to the Unibond Premier with Andy Gray taking over as manager for the start of the 2009-10 campaign. The season was completed under difficult circumstances after chairman Chris Lloyd stood down and withdrew all funding. The Supporters Club accepted the raising of funds to complete the seasons fixtures, and were successful in this objective. During the close season the ground was sold to Chequer Properties Ltd who in turn leased the ground back to the football club at a peppercorn rent, at the same time the property company purchased Chris Lloyd’s majority shareholding, but did not wish to be involved with the day to day running of the football side of the business, and asked Frank Parr to return as chairman and form a committee to carry out these duties. New Chairman Gary Wright appointed this year to oversee the temporary move to groundshare with local neighbours Skelmersdale United.

Reserve Team Match Report… Saturday 24th August – Barnoldswick Town 2 WEST 3 Our second away game of the season saw the reserves at the leagues early leaders Barnoldswick Town. West dominated from the kick off forcing two corners within the first five minutes with Mike Kennedy heading just wide and Tyler Ferguson forcing the Barnoldswick keeper into making a save. West continued to dominate, playing some very nice one and two touch football and it would be fair to say Barnoldswick could not keep up with the pace of the game. West created a number of chances in the first half with Joss Chishambo forcing the keeper to make a good save and shots from Shackeel Depeiaza and Kyle Hendley going over the bar. Just before the half time whistle the ball was again played into the box and Shackeel shot from six yards, only to see the ball hit another West forward and rebound for a goal kick. West went in at half time having nothing to show for an excellent first half display. West started the second half in the same vain as the first and within five minutes got the reward the deserved. Shackeel played a first time ball to the feet of Rich Gleaves, making his West debut, a first time ball back to Shackeel who played another first time ball into the path of Rich who shoot from the edge of the box to make the score 0‐1. West continued to press forward and on the hour Theo Warmington robbed a Barnoldswick player, played the ball down the line to the overlapping Joss Chishambo who passed inside to Shackeel who shoot across the keeper, the ball going in off the far post to make the score 0‐2. At this stage West were coasting and it only took another five minutes for West to increase the score when Tyler took a free kick just outside the Barnoldswick area, the ball bounced off the keeper and Theo following up made the score 0‐3. At 0‐3 West took their eye of the ball and allowed Barnoldswick to get back into the game. Barnoldswick had a ten minute spell that saw them score two goals and make the last twenty five minutes very interesting. West however held on with some very good defending from Tommy Hendley, Mike Kennedy and Evril Brooks and with some good forward play from another debutante, 16 year old youth team player Jardel Depiaza. overall an excellent display from a team that seems to be getting better the more games they play together and whilst it is early days there is some very good emerging talent within the squad. Rob Madden – Reserve Team Manager

FA Cup 1st Preliminary Qualifying Round Draw The winners of today’s fixture will be rewarded with a home draw against the winners of Atherton Collieries versus Radcliffe Borough also being played today. The date of which will be played on Saturday 14th September with any arrangements for a potential replay made at a later date. The team that progresses will be awarded £3,000 by the Football Association.

Stop Press – Ashton Athletic 2 West 2 Match Report will appear in the AFC Blackpool programme…

THE ROAD TO WEMBLEY CONTINUES… IN CHORLTON West Didsbury & Chorlton took one step closer to Wembley by defeating Abbey Hey in the Extra Preliminary Round at Brookburn Road in their first ever FA Cup tie in their 105 year history. West qualified for the competition following a dramatic rise through the leagues after three promotions in the last three seasons, rising from the 1st Division of the Manchester League to the Premier Division of the North West Counties, culminating in a third place finish in the 1st division last season and promotion behind cup opponents Abbey Hey. In addition to an historic first FA Cup tie for West, grassroots football fan Alan Oliver, along with his daughter Jordan and fellow supporters, will begin his own Wembley dream journey following the winner of Saturday’s game and every subsequent round up to and including the Final in May 2014 with the aim of raising funds for Christies Hospital in memory of his mother in law Pat Boyling. This also isn’t Alan’s first time at West as he also visited the club in the Manchester League era a few years ago, so we extend a warm welcome to The Recreation Ground to both Alan and his friends for this, our inaugural FA Cup game. Player interview…meet Anthony Potts Anthony Potts Age: 28 From: Sunderland Supports: Sunderland Occupation: Social Worker Former clubs: Ryhope C.W. Chester-le-Street Town, Manchester Metropolitan University, Old Mancunians You started life at Chester-le-Street Town? Do you have any stand out moments from your time at the club? I was at Ryhope C.W. when I was 17, then when the manager left at the end of the season to join Chester Le Street Town he took me and a few others with him. They’re a big club in the north-east and I saw it as a good opportunity to try and play Northern League, we had a good season from what I remember finishing 2nd or 3rd and winning the County Cup. I wasn’t involved in their youth side but I know they were very good. Danny Graham was there at the same time I think and another lad went on to sign for Reggina in Italy. They had a good coach but he wasn’t my biggest fan however, probably because of my penchant for yellow cards. Next you were off to MMU, what were you studying? Did you continue to play football through your Uni days? How did you do? Uni was amazing, everything about it I loved and football played a big part in that. I studied Criminology & Human Behaviour which has lead me to the career I’m in now but sport was also at the forefront of my university life. We had a good side too, winning the BUSA League twice whilst also competing in the National League. We had an American coach who’d been working in Uruguay come over and manage us in my final year which was interesting to say the least. I think he found the English culture more difficult to comprehend than his UEFA ‘A’ Licence he was taking! But alas, it ended slightly disappointingly for myself. After winning the league we were beaten away to Loughborough University, which is no disgrace, to miss out on a Universities Final place, and frustratingly i picked up an injury which meant I was an unused substitute for our final match, a cup semi-final against Maine Road FC. The programme just seems to mention a mythical Anthony Potts character who just seemed, almost Callum Schofield-esque, turn up one day at training. How did you come to be involved at West Didsbury & Chorlton? It was all a bit cloak & dagger really, I’d spent the last 15 months recovering from my 3rd knee ligament injury and to be honest I was tired of doctors and physios, I thought I’d give my body one last chance and if it wasn’t up to it I’d walk away from the whole thing. I’d made the decision to leave my old club as they clearly were missing me after such a long period out and I’d heard a couple of people mention West Didsbury so thought I’d have a dodge down. There was only Andy and a couple of others there when I arrived for pre-season training and I could tell he thought I was a complete chancer. I mean, who turns up for their first ever training session in a suit? Anyway, things went OK for me after a couple of games in the Reserves and I was with the 1st Team for the start of the season which I was delighted with. I made my debut away at Chadderton which became a rags to riches story within about 25 minutes for myself. My first involvement in the game was to receive a throw-in from Callum Jones, with absolutely no pressure whatsoever the ball went under my foot and was racing into open play. Not ideal if you’re playing Centre Half. Anyway, with the opposition striker know bearing down on goal I thought a simple arm across would fix this little conundrum, he went down like a ton of bricks, in the box and I was last man. I can only assume the linesman took pity on me as he gingerly waved play on. Fast forward 20 minutes and I scored with a header from a corner, composed myself and I suppose the rest, as they say, is history. For the record, Tommy Walsh scored 2 absolute blinders that day to wrap up the game 3-0.

Your first season as a West player who helped secure promotion and also collected a 1st Division Trophy winners medal. It must have been an enjoyable first season? It was brilliant, in many people’s eyes I’m sure we over-achieved but the feeling amongst the lads was always that we could pull it off. The team spirit is fantastic and it’s no coincidence our form improved as the season went on. We were getting to know each other well and that was showing on the pitch. You topped off the season with the Player of the Season award. That must have been a great way to round off a season with promotion and a trophy. Yeah, I was chuffed to be honest! Not just because I’d won it but because I knew who I was up against. So many players had great season’s. The Schofield and Jones’ brothers, Woody, Lee Malkin, Mike Aston... it must have been very close, but yeah I was over-the-moon. You broke your nose for the cause last season, how did that come about? You must have looked like you’d been battered for a few days after? Yeah, it wasn’t pretty for a couple of weeks, I needed it re-broken and reset but it’s fine now. And the lads will tell you, apart from smashing far post header’s my face is also a regular source of income...haha!! It was a horrible game, away on a frozen pitch at Abbey Hey. It was an elbow that did the damage but not a malicious one I don’t think. We were 1-0 up at the time and I seemed to be off the pitch for an eternity. We conceded just as I was coming back on and ended up losing the match 21. We felt like we owed them one I think and have since managed to beat them in the 1st Division Trophy Final and knock them out of the FA Cup! So I reckon we’re evens. You picked up your first goal of the season against Abbey Hey in the FA Cup, a terrific far post header capping off a terrific performance and the first ever man of the match award for West in an FA Cup match. It must have been a pleasing way to finish a historic day for the club? It was, there’s certain games that you play in when you can feel the buzz and excitement around everyone and this was definitely one. Everyone wanted to play. Everyone wanted to win. The changing room seemed packed and Andy was hammering it into everyone to make sure they didn’t forget this day. I remember saying to Tommy in the tunnel before, ‘go out and score in The FA Cup lad!’ So to get my goal and a Man of the Match was special yeah. Do you have any stories from our IOM trip? As a little epilogue to this trip we ended up being late for the walk back to the airport. No matter though, I was with Steve Settle, who, no less than 24 hours ago I’d voted ‘Most Intelligent’ in my prematch interview. “I have a map!” He proclaims, so myself, Steve, Lee Malkin, Mike Aston, Dale Newbrooke & Mike Kennedy embark on Settle’s ‘shortcut’ through the IOM countryside. I quickly realised that Settle knows about as much about map reading as I do about Nuclear Fusion. Nothing. Something resembling an episode of 999 ensued and after jumping hay bales, running over train tracks and crossing a river barefoot we made it back to the departure lounge just in time for our last beer of the trip.

WHAT’S OUR

STORY?

West Didsbury and Chorlton FC, have come a long way in their 105 year history which began back in 1908 when the club was founded as Christ Church A.F.C. by Mr R F Hartley, a Sunday School Superintendent at the church on Princess Parkway, West Didsbury.

West played friendlies at first and then in the Manchester Alliance League until the First World War 1914. After the War the club joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League for the 1920/21 season and had to change its name to West Didsbury AFC, as that League did not permit a name suggesting association with any other body. The club was placed in Divisions 1 and A, staying in the top flight for 25 seasons. The first honours were double runners up in Div 1 and Rhodes Cup in 1922/23, and the club remained in the L+C League until 2006, winning many honours and providing 4 League Presidents along the way. The home ground from before 1914 until the mid 1980’s was Christie Playing Fields, and then the owners, Manchester and Salford Playing Fields Society, gave the club notice to quit having decided to sell off the land for commercial development – now ironically called ‘Christie Fields’ office park. After several years’ nomadic existence searching for a new home, the club acquired the redundant and overgrown Recreation Ground at Brookburn Road in 1996, and began to restore this to active use and develop a vision for a community club. This was down to the hard work of a core of players and Committee who refused to let the club fold. Work was completed in time to start the 1997-98 season using excellent new changing rooms and clubhouse facilities aided by a Lottery grant, new sponsors and members’ fundraising, but without a penny from the Playing Fields Society sale proceeds. Further name change followed in 2003 to reflect the new location in Chorlton and the club was then elected to the Manchester League in 2006. In 2007/8 West won its first Manchester League silverware lifting the Murray Shield in the last game of our centenary year. That team was the nucleus of the previously successful junior team and the following season 2008/09 West just missed promotion to the Premier Division and again reached the Murray Shield Final. won their League.

With a new management team led by Andy Nelson, 2009/10 was very successful and honours spread throughout the club. The 1st team won the Murray Shield (the third consecutive year in the final) and was league runners-up. The reserves won the Bridgewater League Cup and the U17 Youth team won their League. In 2010/2011 the 1st team won the Manchester League First Division title in style with a fantastic 65 points out of 72 possible. This ranks as one of the highest points totals per game in Manchester League history dating back over a century. The clubs reserve team and youth teams also had terrific seasons, resulting in promotion and for the second year reaching the Bridgewater Cup Final. The Youth team reached yet another final where they were just pipped to the trophy by New Mills. The Veterans were runners up in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans League and then started a second veterans team such was the interest in the club. Plans were also made to formally integrate junior football as the club Vision is to be a FA Charter Standard Community Club, playing at the highest possible level it can whilst remaining financially viable. Further improved saw floodlights erected in 2011 to meet FA requirements and West competed in the FA Vase for the first time in 2011-2012 as a Step 7 club. Election to the NWCFL followed in June 2012 and the club had an incredible first season winning the Div1 Trophy, finishing in 3rd position after an amazing run in during March and April to secure promotion and also winning a guaranteed FA Cup place. The over 45’s team again chipped in with Cheshire Veterans league silverware. 2013-14 promises to be another testing season as the club adjusts to life in the NWCFL Premier Division, improves its spectator facilities, adds new grass pitches and youth teams as part of its development plan, and aims for long term consolidation and stability at this level whilst remaining as a volunteer run, ‘not for profit’ club.
