Editorial & Welcome to… Colne FC Welcome again to The Recreation Ground for today’s game against high flying Colne FC, one of this seasons contenders for promotion to the Northern Premier League. At present they are sitting pretty in second place and although they are 9 points behind leaders Runcorn Linnets they have 4 games in hand and 12 points to fight for in their bid to finish top of the class. Last season Glossop were in a similar position at this stage with everyone wondering if they could win all their games in hand to secure promotion and as we all know they did just that, despite the additional games from their run to the FA Vase final at Wembley. No such distraction for Colne any longer and with the league to focus on they have every chance of going the distance and winning the title. Colne are reaping the rewards of investing in a young management team having appointed Steve Cunningham to the managers role in 2013. The Colne FC Vision is ‘To create a new family community football club that stands out from the others in the East Lancs area’, and to bring the atmosphere and enjoyment of football back to the players and the club. In the short time Steve has been in charge they have begun to deliver on this both with results and attendances. Their support base has been growing steadily, the team has been progressing with a 4 th place finish last season before starting this campaign like a runaway train and topping the table until the bad weather intervened in November. If you thought WEST were frustrated with 4 postponements to date, spare a thought for Colne as the wet weather has affected them more than anyone else with 14 fixture postponements since 3rd November 2015. PREVIOUS ENCOUNTERS In our short time in the NWCFL we have had mixed results in our games against Colne. In 201314, the first contest at Colne saw West take the lead with a spectacular Botchey goal before adding another 2 in the second half before a temporary floodlight failure with 5 minutes left. On the resumption we added a fourth without reply but the return fixture here was a tight and tense affair ending 1-1 with Steve Settle scoring the WEST goal. Last season we won 3-2 away in the Lancs FA Challenge Trophy in September, but Colne gained their revenge when we played them twice in 3 weeks in the league, starting with a thumping 5-0 home win for Colne in late February and then completing the double with a 1-0 victory here in mid March. This is the first of this season’s two league games against Colne and we also have tricky away trips to Runcorn Linnets and Atherton Collieries, who are the other two main promotion contenders, ahead of Runcorn Town, where we also have to go soon, and 1874 Northwich. FAR EAST BETTING SYNDICATE Last Saturday it was good to get back on track with a home win against a stubborn Darwen side who came back well to equalise and then go ahead, after we took the lead with another goal from Matty Kay. We got back on terms before the break and then Darwen were reduced to 10 men with their goalkeeper seeing red after a dangerous challenge on Ash Woods. WEST piled on the pressure from the start of the second half and another Kay chip settled the nerves after an hour before Woods added a fourth and Steer’s cracker was ruled out for offside. The substitute keeper made some excellent saves, WEST hit the bar and posts another 3 times, had further chances cleared off the line or deflected past the goal the sight of chance after chance going begging prompted one of the more amusing tweets of last weekend from one of our regulars: ‘There must be some Far East betting syndicate that want @WD_CFC to win by one goal only 'cos they've just bombed a million chances’ We will need to be at our best in all departments today to get a result against a top team. Whatever the result, we have always enjoyed good contests and good relations between our two clubs and we extend a warm welcome to everyone from Colne and anywhere else visiting us today. Steve Settle’s Notes Good afternoon everyone and welcome to this afternoons league fixture against Colne. Today we welcome Steve Cunningham and his team to Brookburn Road in what promises to be an extremely tough fixture for the boys. We hope Steve, his management team, players, officials and supporters enjoy our hospitality and, after today of course, we wish them the best for the remainder of the season. Colne are having an excellent season thus far, currently sitting 2nd in the league but with plenty of games in-hand, and I’m sure Cunny will be targeting the title this season! His team are free scoring, indeed between us we’ve racked up 99 league goals (Colne – 52, us - 47) so it will be interesting to see which team can grab the 100th! I thought we were excellent against Darwen last Saturday. The 4-2 scoreline could have been far more emphatic had we been more clinical in front of goal. Sometimes if you hit the woodwork 4 times in 1 game you might wonder if it’s your day but fortunately we had enough about us to still score 4 goals and get the win. If the performance and the goals weren’t enough I was delighted to put the previous 2 home results behind us. We looked a different team than we have done in the previous 2 home games and I’m hoping an improvement in the weather will see us build some of the momentum in our results that we enjoyed in November. I was pleased that Matty Kay contributed with a couple of goals, when on form Matty is one of the best players in this league and I’m looking forward to seeing him push towards 20 goals!
In addition it was brilliant for Ash Woods to get on the score sheet again breaking the record for single season goals for WD&C FC in the NWCFL era in the process. Whilst we have congratulated Ash on his achievement we are keen not to rest on our laurels. Ash’s target is 25 and the way he is going I wouldn’t bet against him. On the injury front we have some concerns going into todays game. Lewis Schofield is still out with Knee trouble, the latest victim of the left back curse! Matt Eck picked up an Achilles strain and Matty Kay is struggling with a stiff back. On the comeback trail, it was great to welcome Scott Mason back to the team last weekend and we are hoping that Richmond Botchey will return to training this week! On a personal note it is brilliant to have one of my little boys, Ollie, as today’s mascot. Ollie is very excited at the prospect of running out onto the pitch with the team. We are all hoping he can bring us a little luck today!

West 4 AFC Darwen 2 …match report West recorded their first win of 2016 scoring four at home for the fourth time this season in a thrilling 4-2 victory over AFC Darwen. After the disappointment of previous weekends late postponement against Winsford United Steve Settle was able to recall upon Callum Jones, Joe Shaw and Matty Kay into the starting line up with Scott Mason returning to the squad after injury. The absence of several of the squad however meant that Settle named himself and assistant Steve Brockley on the bench. West started the game brightly and created a chance inside the first minute as Nic Evangelinos was allowed to turn and shoot at the edge of the area but his shot was straight into the keeper’s hands. Five minutes later West went close again as they worked a short corner and Matty Kay’s shot was blocked at the near post. On nine minutes West led as a long ball from Ben Richardson, filling in at left back, flew over everyone but the bounce deceived the keeper allowing it to go over his head and Matty Kay reacted quickest to head home on the line to give West a deserved, albeit freak lead. AFC Darwen responded well following the goal and forced Hayden Buckley-Smith into a terrific save one-on-one at his near post just four minutes later after a break down the left. They levelled on 21 minutes when a long ball into the box fell to Andrew Bell after two West defenders had got in each other’s way and he stroked it into the bottom right hand corner. On 24 minutes West almost re-took the lead through Kay as a brilliant pass from Evangelinos released him through one-onone but Kay couldn’t get the ball from out under his feet on the uneven surface and the Darwen goalkeeper Darren Jackson was able to take the ball. The miss was immediately punished as Darwen launched an attack and Jonathan Hession was adjudged to have been brought down on the corner of the penalty area by Ben Richardson much to the dismay of the West players and supporters who believed the Darwen player to have kicked the ground.

Buckley-Smith guessed the direction of Conor Gaul’s penalty correctly but despite getting a hand to the ball couldn’t prevent Darwen from taking the lead. West rallied and thought they had levelled on 38 minutes when Ash Woods and Evanelinos combined with a quick one-two at the edge of the area before squaring it to Matt Eckersley to finish from two yards but Woods was adjudged to have been offside. Two minutes later West did level as Nic Evangelinos drilled an effort high into the Darwen goal to bring the two sides level. The games major talking point came in the first minute of stoppage time as Woods ran onto a through ball but the Darwen goalkeeper charged out of his goal and flattened the West striker with the referee brandishing a red card for serious foul play leaving Darwen a man down going into the break. West kicked off the second half determined to make their man advantage count and should have had a penalty two minutes in when Ash Woods was flattened in the same spot the Darwen penalty had been awarded. Three minutes later Evangelinos cut inside and drilled a brilliant effort off the underside of the crossbar with a brilliant block only denying a tap in from the rebound. Despite their disadvantage Darwen still continued to pass the ball and play on the counter but West finally took the lead on 60 minutes as West’s pressure in the penalty area finally paid off as Darwen failed to clear a West attack, the ball fell to Matty Kay who superbly lobbed the sub Darwen goalkeeper to give West the lead for the second time in the game. Following the game West made a pair of changes as Ben Steer and Gary Lilley replaced Lee Gavin and the injured Matt Eckersley. Steer immediately got involved down the right side, running half the length of the field down the right cutting the ball inside to Kay who fired over from 12 yards out.
Match report continued From the kick off Steer won the ball back finding Woods with a pass whose shot hit the inside of the base of the post with another great block from Darwen preventing Kay from completing his hat-trick. On 72 minutes later the same move occurred as Woods powered into the penalty area, his shot hit the inside of the post, again, with the rebound falling to Kay who again was denied by another great Darwen block. On 76 minutes Woods finally got the goal his play had deserved as he raced into the penalty area, rounded the goalkeeper and
rolled it into the back of the net with Ben Richardson following up to ensure it crossed the line. It was Woods 15th goal of the season and the most goals scored by a West player in a single season surpassing Rick Gleave’s 14 goals in 2013/14. Kay had a further chance to secure his hattrick lobbing a looping pass into the six yard box onto the roof of the net whilst Darwen had two chances in stoppage time to reduce their deficit. First Buckley-Smith was called into action at his near post blocking away a shot before the resulting corner was headed over at the far post.

2015 Review Part Two July to September
July New Manager Steve Settle kicked off his campaign with a busy pre-season schedule in which they played no fewer than nine preseason games. The summer began at New Sirs, the site of the Youth Team’s Presidents Cup win in April, in a game that will be best remembered for a superb penalty save from Paul Hughes tipping a powerful shot onto the crossbar. Goals from Scott Jones and a late brace from Ben Steer saw Settle’s reign start with a victory.
Experimentation was the aim of the next two games as West more than held their own against Evo-Stik opposition registering a 4-2 loss at home to last season’s Division One South runners up Leek Town with Kieran Brocklehurst giving West an early 1-0 lead with an elegant chip with Ben Steer briefly pulling it back to 2-2 with a stunning volley.

A good crowd of 148 saw Glossop North End kick off their preseason at Brookburn Road with Jordan Poole netting for West before the NWCFL Champions ran out eventual 3-1 winners. What followed was a 1-0 win away to Atherton LR with a goal from wonderful free kick by Michael Simcock before Ben Steer netted again in a 1-1 draw away at Litherland Remyca. West then welcomed Midland League side Bromsgrove Sporting to Brookburn Road with Mark Rogers and Sam Mitten scoring in a 2-1 win. The month ended with an incredible 44 draw at Knutsford in which West came from 3-1 down to lead thanks to goals from Ben Steer (2), Jordan Poole and manager Steve Settle
August August saw the start of the new season and West were handed one of the toughest starts in the visiting First Division Champions Atherton Collieries. A threadbare West side withstood a first half barrage and took a shock lead with three minutes remaining through debutant Ash Woods. Woods might have made it 2-0 seconds later but instead West were punished in heart-breaking fashion as Nathan Battersby netted twice in stoppage time to hand Colls all three points. New Manager Steve Settle only had to wait three days for his first victory as West manager however as they recorded their first ever away win to Alsager Town. West recovered from going behind after 2 minutes to level through a terrific Jordan Poole strike before Matt Eckersley headed home the winner from a corner.
West exited the FA Cup at the extra preliminary qualifying stage in the presence of the BBC as they were defeated away to 1874 Northwich in front of 350 at Barton Stadium. The game was overshadowed however to a serious hip injury to Ben Steer. West’s new look side struggled early on being handed an emphatic 3-0 defeat at home to AFC Liverpool before a shock 1-0 home loss to Barnoldswick Town which saw them lose Michael Simcock to a season ending injury. The remainder of August would see them winless as they lost 42 away to Nelson on a controversy filled night in Lancashire with Scott Mason and Lee Gavin adding their first goals of the season the only positives.
Controversy would follow West to AFC Darwen as they took the lead through debutant Ben Richardson just before half time. ‘Benji’ then suffered a broken foot but was forced to play the final half hour in goal as fellow debutant goalkeeper Hayden Buckley-Smith was sent off. Despite falling behind 2-1 West rallied late on and secured a valuable point thanks to Jonny Poizer’s first goal in his second spell with the club. Bank Holiday Monday saw a large crowd of 229 at Brookburn Road who witnessed 1874 race into a three goal half time lead. However West rallied in the second half with goals from Jordan Poole and a stunning strike from Callum Jones pulled it back to 3-2 before Matt Eckersley was later controversially sent off to kill of a late rally. The Reserve Team began their season under a new manager Jim Hines but lost their first game at home to Lostock Gralam 2-1. The
Youth team began life in the North West Youth Alliance Premier Division with a 3-2 loss away at Ashton Athletiic.
September September saw the start of the FA Vase for West who welcomed Northern Counties East League side Barton Town Old Boys. In what was considered an upset around the league West rallied from a goal down to win 2-1 thanks to a brace from the impressive Rick Gleave. The win spurred West on as they once again rallied from a goal down against Bootle in the following game, with the hosts scoring inside the first 60 seconds, thanks to another Matt Eckersley goal from a corner before Ash Woods secured three points with a superb strike on the counter. West’s suffered further setbacks against Winsford United (0-1), despite dominating, and Ashton Athletic losing 0-3 but the turning point of the season came with the visit of Padiham. Callum Jones gave West a first half lead before a second half flurry from Matty Kay, a brace from Ash Woods and a goal for Dan Russell against his former club gave West an emphatic 5-1 win. Although West ended the month with a 0-3 home defeat to Runcorn Linnets, the disappointment with the loss showed just how far they had come.
Elsewhere Jim Hines recorded his first win as Reserve Team Manager with a 3-1 win over Unicorn Athletic thanks to goals from Shackeel Depiaza, Callum Williams and Abdul Abogalia. The Youth Team registered their first win of the season with a 2-0 victory at home to Curzon Ashton but were narrowly defeated in stoppage time in their first ever home FA Youth Cup tie against Wrexham 2-1. History of COLNE FC Colne F.C. were formed in January 1996, by a group of like-minded people under the wing of now Chairman Dave Blacklock. The enthusiasts combined their strengths and knowledge of non-league football, and arrangements were made for a new club to use the vacant Holt House Stadium, once used by the Dynamoes in the North West Counties Football League Division Two. Colne FC’s first ever competitive game was on the 17th August 1996 against Middlewich and the result ended in a 1 – 0 defeat. The team was then managed by Keith Mason, but after his resignation soon after, Denzel Hart was appointed to the hot seat. His first game was a 6 – 0 defeat away at Ashton Town, but just two games later Colne FC recorded their first ever victory thumping Bacup Borough 5 – 2. The highlight of the season, coming when the reserves won the BEP Cup at Clitheroe’s Shawbridge ground. The clubs fourth season was eagerly awaited, but in September 2000 manager Hart left the club by mutual agreement. Player John Lister was placed in temporary charge and his appointment was made permanent a month later. Lister learned lessons from this campaign and in 2001/02 finished 14th. In the summer of 2002 James Webster took control of the club, to become the youngest chairman in the league at the age of 24. James was a player at the club with plenty of experience and along with his father who was vice chairman, had a strong desire to see the current side emulate the success of its predecessors. Season 2002/03 started well enough, but in December 2002 John Lister resigned as Manager. Paul Lynch took over as manager and the improvements continued, but in August 2003, Paul was offered the position of manager at Unibond side Rossendale United and subsequently left. Webster responded immediately by appointing Nigel Coates as the new manager as well as player Gary Rishton as his number 2.

Nigel had played for the Dynamoes, being in the FA Vase winning team and had experience of management at local rivals Nelson. Season 2003/04 brought back the glory days to Colne with a string of successes. In the League Colne had to play catch up after a successful cup run, but ended the season 10 points clear in Division two, scoring 102 goals in their 38 games. We completed the double by winning the Division Two Trophy 1 – 0 over Great Harwood. The season was capped by an amazing run in the FA Vase for a North West Counties Football League Division Two club, they progressed all the way to the semi-finals, (via an incredible 1 – 2 away win at AFC Wimbledon) before being defeated over two legs 4 – 3 on aggregate to AFC Sudbury. As the season progressed attendances started to rise as the local population realised we were no longer the whipping boys of the league, and the famous RED ARMY was formed. Colne took little time in adjusting to life in the First Division, another FA Vase run and a creditable 10th place was secured in 2004-/05 Consolidation has followed and Colne FC’s highest league positions to date have been 5th in season 2007-08 and the same again in 2010-11. In November 2013 Colne’s manager for the past 10 years stepped down from the hot seat and former Colne player Steve Cunningham was appointed manager, with another former Colne favourite Ted Cockett as his No.2 and Coach. Steve and Ted have ambitious plans for the club and wasted no time in bringing in a few new faces to boost the playing squad, consolidating for the rest of the season but with big hopes and plans for the following seasons. Season 2014-15 proved to be the best ever in terms of league placing, with Colne finishing a creditable fourth. No doubt the management team have ambitions to improve on that in 2015-16. With all this going on, due to the fantastic efforts of a strong and loyal band of followers and officials including the resurrected “ Red Army “ and the continued support from our main sponsors XLCR Vehicle Management there is a bright future on the horizon for Colne FC.

The chanting of racist or obscene chanting is strictly forbidden. Glasses, bottles, gas canisters, knives, darts, tools, flag poles or any other articles likely to cause injury are not permitted into the ground. Alcohol may be purchased and consumed in the bar area only. Children are not allowed in the Club House unless accompanied by an adult. Encroachment onto the playing area is forbidden at all times. Standing is not allowed in front of the seated areas. All forms of transport on the clubs car park is at the owners’ risk.
