30th March 2013 – Daisy Hill

We welcome Daisy Hill to The Recreation Ground for the first time in the second fixture between our two clubs. Last time we had a close encounter on a difficult surface in mid November and today promises to be the opposite with firm hard conditions resulting from the March drought. In the away game we snatched all 3 points with a goal from Pottsy close to full time and in the period since then Daisy Hill have recorded some impressive results in the Cup despite their indifferent league form. They reached the semi-final of the Divisional Cup pushing Ashton Town all the way in two close games in the recent two legged semi-final and also pushing the league leaders all the way before losing narrowly 4-3 at Formby. They also have a few players amongst the goals this season with Messrs Gregory, Boland and Farnworth all scoring regularly throughout the season and they all pose a threat. MIDWEEK MAYHEM Our Tuesday night performance against Leek CSOB was excellent as we recorded our biggest margin of victory this season. It was great to see such a positive reaction from everyone in the squad after the disappointment of the narrow defeat at Abbey Hey and also to see the goals spread throughout the team. We really pushed on after the second goal and put the visitors to the sword in clinical fashion. The result nudged us into 3rd place and puts the pressure on others around us. We need to maintain our momentum and go all out for another 3 points today to keep our place at the top end of the table. TAKING STOCK Inside is an interview feature with Andy Nelson from the NWCFL website. In that Andy mentions the key ingredients to success at this level when we’re not paying players but rather trying to build a successful club based on doing things the right way. That means providing excellent facilities, coaching and support and ensuring everyone treats one another with respect. There are other good examples of clubs at Step 5 and 6 levels where this practice and approach is breeding success. Most notable this season is Tunbridge Wells from the Kent League who are now within 90 minutes of an FA Vase final appearance at Wembley having beaten last year’s winners Dunston in the fourth round and hot favourites Shildon 2-0 in the first leg semi-final last Saturday. The non league paper featured an interview with their manager, Martin Larkin, prior to the semi-final who said his squad are so close because everyone at the club is there for the right reasons: ‘The players don’t receive a penny and that’s been in pace for the last 3 years since I took over as the club looked to rebuild … It’s been a lot of hard work but we’re lucky we’ve got good local players that have really bought into it and we’ve got a really strong coaching team. ‘The whole thing naturally brings you together – there is no-one in the group there just because they’re picking up £100 a week or something silly. ‘It shows it can be done. A lot of money would have been spent over the years by teams in the Vase and we’ve got to this stage without spending a penny. We’re quite proud of that and we do use it as a motivator as well at times.’ What could be more motivating than being 90 minutes from a Wembley appearance!! The similarity to what we try to do here at WEST is quite striking and this approach is increasingly prevalent as non league clubs at our level have to ensure financial viability and stability. That is why we are so keen to develop a solid local base of players, supporters and business sponsors and advertisers who can be proud to be associated with WEST as a not for profit club trying to play at the highest level our abilities will allow. Our growing local support is key to this. Who knows, maybe we can imitate Tunbridge Wells as we look forward to competing in the FA Vase again next season; and in addition, hopefully that tantalizing first ever place in the FA Cup draw if we can secure a 4th place league finish. What could be more motivating for us? THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT THIS AFTERNOON AND PLEASE RETURN FOR THE ATHERTON LR GAME NEXT WEEK. Rob Turley Thanks to Mike Fryer for providing photos we use on the web and in the programme, on the front cover Mike has captured Lee Malkin scoring his third goal against Atherton Collieries in our last home game.

View from the Dugout (or rather from the lounge at Abbey Hey!) Recent readers of the NWCFL website will have noticed the feature by Ian Templeman based on an interview with Andy Nelson. This time it wasn’t from the dugout but rather the warmth and comfort of the lounge after the Abbey Hey game. ‘After a recent good run of form that moved them on to the fringes of the First Division promotion chase, West Didsbury & Chorlton manager Andy Nelson is now targeting a top four finish for his side by the end of the season. Last Saturday’s narrow defeat at Abbey Hey ended a run that saw West pick up six wins and a draw from the seven previous league games, and with his team now sitting in fourth place in their first season in the NWCFL, Andy is looking to maintain that position in the remaining games. “I think the whole season has gone well for us”, he said. “We’d have been delighted if we had come in and just finished in a respectable position, but we’ve come in and surprised a few people, and that’s nice. “Our Achilles heel has been scoring goals. We’ve got a very good shape, but maybe the ingredient that is lacking is a 25 goal a season striker. But we’ve been on a good run, and it’s nice that we can be up there with some of the pace setters and not embarrass ourselves. I think we are up there on merit”. It’s easy to forget that the club has made rapid progress from grass roots football to the NWCFL, and Andy believes that everyone at the club now needs to pull together to build on what has been achieved so far. “The club is a bit behind others in the league who are steeped in non-league history, but we have come a long way in a short space of time, it’s only a few years ago we were playing at a lower levels of amateur football. We’ve got some smashing people at the club, and we need to consolidate and make sure we can sustain our place at this level, and I’m sure we can do that. “We have some good experienced players, and the challenge is to keep them and be sure we can do things we can do well, because, without a budget, that is what keeps people at the club. Things like the good facilities, the training experience, the way we play and the way we handle players, all that has to be first class to keep players at the club”. Looking ahead to the rest of the season, Andy now has one specific target in mind. “I would say promotion may be a bit unrealistic for us, as we have stretched ourselves to get to where we are in the league”, he said. “But what I’d like to do now is take the club into the FA Cup for the first time, by getting a top four finish. If we can do that, it would be a great season for us”

Our visitors… Daisy Hill Situated one and a half miles south of Westhoughton town centre and around four miles from Bolton, the village of Daisy Hill first saw football in season 1894-95 although it is possible that football was being played in the area for some years prior to that date. The first known honours for the club came in 1896-97 when the Wigan and District League Championship and the Westhoughton Cup were won without losing a match. The location of the clubs ground in those days is unknown but the present ground was used during the 1st World War period when the club played in the Leigh and District Senior Sunday School League. The club then joined the Westhoughton League and during the 1920’s and 1930’s won many honours in what was one of the strongest local leagues at the time. Notable players included Dick Pollard and Billy Farrimond, both of whom also went on to play cricket for Lancashire. Alf Watkinson, grandfather of the former Lancashire Cricket Club captain Mike Watkinson went on to sign for Blackpool and Tommy Woodward (Bolton Wanderers and Middlesbrough) also had a number of games for the club. Little is known of the period leading up to the 2nd world war but the club re-formed in 1951 playing in the Westhoughton League on the St. James Street Recreation Ground/Cricket Ground until the landowner made an offer to the club to return to New Sirs in 1957. The acquisition of the lease was a major step forward and gave aspiration to move into the Bolton Combination and develop into one of the most formidable clubs in the area. Dressing rooms were erected at the ground for the start of the 1968/69 season while on the field the club won the Bolton Combination Premier Division on four occasions, the Bolton Combination Cup on four occasions and the Lancashire Amateur Shield twice during the 60’s and 70’s. In 1978 the Club was accepted into the Lancashire Football Combination, and with the advent of the Non-League football pyramid and the subsequent amalgamation of the Lancashire Football Combination and the Cheshire County League the Club became a founder member of the North West Counties League giving them the opportunity to play in and bring national competition to the village. With the new pyramid set up requiring clubs to meet new standards for facilities, new dressing rooms and a clubhouse for social activities were erected at New Sirs in 1982. Since then improvement of the clubs facilities has been ongoing and for the 2005-2006 season a floodlighting system has been installed which has allowed the club to remain in the National League System and return to National and County competitions.

First team report‌

Saturday 23rd March: Abbey Hey 2 WEST 1

This was the only game in the division to survive the freak weather conditions last weekend and saw West take on second placed Abbey Hey, who were anxious to avenge their defeat at Brookburn Road earlier in the season. The opening exchanges were even with Tre Baldwin and Lee Malkin creating the first chance after 2 minutes when the home keeper was lucky to escape when his attempted clearance hit Malkin but then fell kindly for him to gather at the second attempt. Abbey Hey responded with a good run and deep cross to the back post where the unmarked home 11 volleyed over the bar. 5 minutes into the game good interplay saw Scott Jones played in by Malkin only for his rising shot to go wide. After 15 minutes Abbey Hey created a great chance when the left winger got past two challenges near the goal line before sending a low cross across the face of goal and fortunately for West no-one was on hand to apply the finishing touch. A minute later Lewis Schofield had an opportunity but found the keeper rather than the back of the net. It was end to end at this stage and Abbey Hey had another chance when a header from a corner flashed over the bar. After 29 minutes a Mike Aston header from a Thomas free kick went wide and then immediately afterwards Lee Malkin collected the ball wide on the left before moving inside to create the space for a great right foot shot which flew past the home keeper and into the top left corner to give West a 1-0 lead. A minute later and it could have been 2-0 but Malkin shot wide of the advancing keeper and goal as some sloppy defending went unpunished. Ben Simpson was called upon to smother the ball from a low cross shot after 34 minutes and as half time arrived a Tre Baldwin effort was saved by the keeper. Mark Woodcock started the second half for Danny Summers and after 55 minutes a neat move involving Callum Jones, and Tre Baldwin ended with another Malkin effort over the bar. Abbey Hey reacted strongly and on 57 minutes were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area from which the left back shot past the defensive wall and just inside the post to level at 1-1. The hosts pushed hard to get an advantage which arrived on 65 minutes when West twice failed in attempts to clear a high ball lofted towards goal and the home forward slammed the loose ball home from close range to give Simpson no chance. Tommy Walsh and Lee Shillito replaced Baldwin Willis and Malkin as West looked for fresh legs in attack to try and get something from the game, and in the closing 10 minutes West created another 3 reasonable chances when firstly Tommy Walsh turned past his man on the edge of the area only to see his low shot smothered by the keeper. 5 minutes from time Lewis Schofield turned and put Lee Shillito in one on one but his left foot shot was straight at the keeper and then in the final minute a back post header also found the keeper when an effort back across goal might have brought more reward. Despite the result and first defeat in a long time there was no shortage of effort, spirit and fight on a bitterly cold afternoon.

STOP PRESS>>>Tuesday 26th March: WEST 8 Leek CSOB 2 After the disappointment of the result against Abbey Hey, West bounced back in the best possible way on Tuesday night with a convincing victory over Leek to post the biggest win of the season. Goals were spread around the team with Man of the Match, Tommy Walsh bagging 2, Gareth Thomas also chipped in with 2 and Mike Aston scoring from the spot, Lee Malkin, Callum Jones and Mark Woodcock completed the scoring. This game will be covered in our next home programme.

Today’s Match Sponsor…Glyn Meacher Glyn has been involved with West Didsbury and Chorlton AFC for well over 20 years This included being goalkeeper for 1st, 2nd and Vets teams for about 15 years, during which time the teams he played for won nothing!!!! Since accepting that he was simply not fit enough to continue to play, he has served the club in a number of roles including Committee member, Secretary, Vice Chair and now following Brian Cripps retirement as Chairman Married with two children, he will continue to balance watching W.D.&C at Brookburn Road with going to the Reebok, and various Championship Grounds to support Bolton Wanderers.

From the Terrace… For the non-league football supporter you get used to waking up on a Saturday morning, checking the weather and awaiting confirmation that a fixture is on or off is part of the whole experience. However waking up on the Saturday before Easter and seeing a whole weekend of football wiped out due to snow really takes it to a new level. This season is truly threatening to never end. Happily we were not confined to a football-less Saturday in front of the TV. Fortunately for clubs in the NWCFL the league were quick to make alternate arrangements for the postponements meaning that some sides were going to be playing Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday AND Monday this week. Factor in the fact that almost everyone involved in the league is doing this whilst maintaining a full time job it’s a true proof of the commitment of people who volunteer and play up and down the pyramid to football. Personally last Saturday waking up early and awaiting confirmation as to whether the game was on whilst every other club tweeted photos of their ground covered in snow was agony. Abbey Hey even played a little trick on their followers by posting a photo of their ground covered in snow! Despite the photo having been taken at Christmas when we arrived at the ground there was not a spec of snow to be found. Interestingly the referee must have had trouble getting there as we kicked off well before 3pm. There was a big crowd as people must have come just to see a match (thanks to my twitter skills I will claim). The game itself shows how far West have come in such a short space of time as the whole league looked at our result for its direct implications to the promotion race and not just because of Abbey Hey. West were more than comfortable against a side that hadn’t conceded a goal for 5 consecutive games and Abbey Hey’s celebrations at the end showed how big a win that was for them. It’s difficult to feel too disappointed as we’ve come so far over the course of a season and to be this close to the promotion places at this stage of the season is an exciting venture and the way the team has been playing there are sure to be more victories than defeats between now and the end of April. There is still so much to play for. Enjoy the game. Rob McKay

WHAT’S OUR

STORY?

Newly elected North West Counties League side West Didsbury and Chorlton FC, have come a long way in their 105 year history which began back in 1908 when the club was founded as Christ Church A.F.C. by Mr R F Hartley, a Sunday School Superintendent at the church on Princess Parkway, West Didsbury. West first played in the Manchester Alliance League until the outbreak of the First World War (1914-1918). After the War the club joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League for the 1920/21 season and had to change its name to West Didsbury AFC, as the League did not permit association with any other body. The club was placed in Divisions 1 and A and stayed in the top flight for 25 seasons. The first honours were double runners up in Div 1 and Rhodes Cup in 1922/23, and the club remained in that league until 2006, winning many honours and providing 4 League Presidents along the way. Many of the current committee were players in that league. The club played at Christie Playing Fields from before 1914 but had to relocate when given notice to quit by the Playing Fields Society in the mid 80’s when that body decided to sell the land for commercial gain. After several years nomadic existence the club kicked off the 1997-98 season at their splendid new home at The Recreation Ground at Brookburn Road, and began to develop a vision for a community club. This was down to the hard work of a core of players and Committee who refused to let the club fold and secured the new facilities via a Lottery grant, new sponsors and fundraising, but without a penny of help from the Playing Fields Society proceeds. Further name change followed in 2003 to reflect our new location in Chorlton and we were elected to the Manchester League in 2006. In 2007/8 Season West won Manchester League silverware for the first time, lifting the Murray Shield in the last game of our centenary year. That team was the nucleus of the previously successful junior team and the following season West just missed promotion to the Premier Division and again reached the Murray Shield Final.

With a new management team led by Andy Nelson, who had previously managed at Leigh RMI, the 2009/10 season was very successful and honours spread throughout the club. The 1st team won the Murray Shield, (the third consecutive year we have been in the final) and finishing runners-up in the league. The second team won the Bridgewater League Cup and the U17 Youth team won their League. In 2010/2011 the 1st team won the Manchester League First Division title in style with a fantastic points total (65 points out of 72 possible). This ranks as one of the highest points totals per game in the history of the Manchester League dating back over a century. The clubs reserve team and youth teams also had terrific seasons, resulting in promotion and for the second year reaching the Bridgewater Cup Final. The clubs ‘A’ team finished and the Youth team reached yet another final where they were just pipped to the trophy by New Mills. The Veterans were runners up in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans League and then started a second veterans team such was the interest in the club. Plans were also made to formally integrate junior football as the club Vision is to be a FA Charter Standard Community Club in every sense. In recent seasons several players who started at West have been signed by top non league clubs, but such is the spirit of the club that many players return to what they see as a family club. The club now looks forward to fulfilling its ambition to play at the highest possible level it can whilst continuing to be run as a community club and transition to the NWCFL. The ground and facilities have been further improved and floodlights erected to meet grading requirements and West competed in the FA Vase for the first time in 2011-2012 as a Step 7 club. The club was duly elected to the NWCFL at the AGM on 16th June 2012.
