26th March 2013 – Leek CSOB
Tonight we welcome back Leek CSOB from Staffordshire for this rearranged midweek fixture following the rather wet Boxing Day game which was abandoned at half time. That was a frustrating day for all concerned, particularly as Leek had to travel following a morning pitch inspection confirming the game would go ahead only for the incessant rains to return an hour before kickoff and result in a waterlogged pitch by half time. That followed our away game in Leek earlier in the season when we beat the rush hour traffic in Manchester and Macclesfield in early September when we managed to sneak a 2-1 away win with a rather fortunate late goal. That was a competitive and very even game and we expect no less tonight as Leek have been steadily climbing into the top half of the division and have gradually strengthened their squad as the season has progressed. RECENT RESULTS Our league form in the past 2 months has been excellent and the emphatic victory over a very strong Atherton Collieries side in our last home game, lifted us a few places in the table as we aim for the highest finish possible. With Darwen, Ashton Town and Abbey Hey all engaged in the Divisional cup semi-finals it was important to get a good win under our belts and the 3 points were fully deserved as a result of another wholehearted performance from the entire squad. Some midweek results have also gone our way before last Saturday’s trip away to second placed Abbey Hey. Despite going ahead and holding a 1-0 interval lead the home side fought back in the second half and we paid a heavy price for missing a couple of clear cut chances when we were ahead, before two defensive errors cost us two goals and the game. In the closing stages we again went close but it was too little too late against the meanest defence in the league. However, with 8 games left including tonight we are still in the group of 6 clubs which has pulled away a little from the rest of the division but we know that every game at this level is fiercely competitive and every team well organised and managed. Leek will be no exception. Andy has the entire squad fully focused on the difficult task ahead and this was evident from the attitude and application of the players drafted into the team for the Atherton game due to injuries and illness. Dave Conlon gave a steady and assured performance at the back and it was nice to see Ian Taylor back in the squad after such a long time out with injury. It was also good to see injured Mike Aston, Lee Shillito and Dale Newbrook encouraging the lads from the side and again demonstrating the real togetherness within the squad which is the bedrock and foundation of being successful. Callum Schofield has also been a huge influence and it was unfortunate he failed a late fitness test on Saturday and we hope he will be sufficiently recovered to play again tonight. THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN? After tonight it’s just 7 games left with Daisy Hill providing the opposition here at Brookburn Road next Saturday at 3pm, before we travel to Rochdale Town on Easter Monday again at 3pm. We are then at home again on Sat 13th against Atherton LR, who we play for the 3rd time this season, and then away at Eccleshall on 10th April and then play Irlam in our final home game on Saturday 13th April. The season concludes with two really touch calls away at Ashton Town on Saturday 20th and then the final game at Atherton Collieries on Monday 22nd April. We have already achieved our pre-season objective of establishing ourselves as a NWCFL side and consolidating at this level. The end of season target of a top 6 finish is well within our reach and if we can stay in the top 4 we know we will have the certainty of that FA Cup place next season. GOING AWAY? A number of our supporters have been asking about travel to away games and it has been really encouraging to take good support with us to Holker, Formby and Abbey Hey in recent weeks. If you are interested in travelling to Rochdale Town on Easter Monday and need transport then please have a word with any of the Committee at tonight’s game. THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR SUPPORT– ENJOY TONIGHT’S GAME AND DON’T FORGET THE CLUBHOUSE REFRESHMENTS.

View from the Dugout We’d like to welcome the players, officials and supporters of Leek CSOB to Brookburn Road for today’s game. It will be Leek’s second visit to Brookburn Road this season after our game on Boxing Day was abandoned at half time after a torrent of rain just after the kick off. The score was 2-2 at the time of abandonment and I’m sure the game will be as exciting and tense this time around. It was a good moment for the club to see Ben Simpson wearing the captains’ armband against Atherton Collieries when Mike Aston missed out through injury. Ben is a fantastic example of what this club is all about, having played as a junior for Oswald Road before joining West and establishing himself as our number 1. Lee Malkin completed another club milestone against ‘The Colls’ by registering the clubs first hat-trick as a NWCFL club and also scored our only goal last Saturday against Abbey Hey. Lee’s excellent recent performances and hard work has been rewarded with 7 goals in just 5 games. We hope you enjoy today’s game. Andy Nelson and Steve Eckersley

Our visitors… Leek CSOB Leek CSOB Football Club was formed in 1945 by the late schoolmaster Trevor Harvey to provide football and other sports for the youngsters leaving school immediately at the end of the Second World War. Leek County School Old Boys has run continuously since its formation, starting off in the Leek Minor League and in 1948 the late Manager, Ernie Webster ran the team. The Club played in the local Youth League until the 1959/60 season. The Old Boys as they were known and still are known throughout North Staffordshire and the North West. In the 1959/60 season they won the Leek Post Charity Shield. The following season the team (all under 21) entered the Leek & Moorland League under Manager Ernie Sharrocks. In 1960/61 the Club won the coveted Sentinel Cup at Vale Park, home of Port Vale in front of over 2,000 spectators to bring the Trophy back to Leek after a 30-year interval by beating Stone St Michael’s by 2-1, this trophy was originally won by a Leek Team known as Leek Alexandra in the 1930’s. Good years followed when in the 1961/62 season the Club won the Leek & Moorland League Championship and the League Cup and the Youth Team won the Leek & Cheadle League Cup. Harry Lacey came on the scene and he became the man that kept the Club running for some 11 years, almost single handed. The Old Boys went on to win the League Cup again in 1963/64 and again in 1973/74. The 70’s and 80’s were lean years for the Club. The Club moved the Senior side into the Staffs County League (North) and were finalists in the Bourne Sports Trophy and the Leek Cup in the 1980’s, and semi-finalists in the Walsall Senior Cup. Stan Lockett took over as Manager from Harry Lacey in 1974 following Harry’s retirement and he was in charge for 5-years following which he became the Club Secretary. The Club became founder members of the Staffordshire Senior League , and in the 1990’s the present Club Chairman, Chris McMullen led the Club on the field to its most successful period in its history. The then Chairman, Ken Hill, led the Club in those successful days and he along with his Management Committee took the massive step for CSOB, TO JOIN THE North West Counties Football League following the winning of the Senior League Championship and the chance of promotion to the NWCFL Division 2 in the 1995/96 season. In that season the Club won the Staffordshire Senior League Championship, the League Cup, the League Shield, the Leek Cup and the whole Leek CSOB Squad represented the Senior League to win the Inter-League Cup against a Liverpool League Representative Team. Ken Hill was the Chairman of the Club for 25 years and his leadership was a period of great stability, he was well respected by everyone in the Non-League game. In the 1996/97 season the Old Boys gained promotion to Division 1 (Now known as the Premier League) of The NWCFL, they played in the Premier for three seasons before being relegated back to Division One. The Old Boys throughout its 65 year history has been forced to hire grounds for all its teams to participate in organised football. In the 2005 season the Old Boys played the newly formed FC United of Manchester in their first ever official League game at Harrison Park, some 2,595, spectators invaded Harrision Park. It became a Media event with BBC TV and Sky TV being present The police insisted the game should be and ‘all ticket’ match and applications for tickets came flooding in from all parts of Great Britain and over 2,000 Match Programmes were sold that day. Before the match Manager at the time, Chris McMullen, was inter viewed by Radio Stoke and by BBC TV. FC United won the game 5-2 but ever since there has been a rapport between the two Clubs. The Club has 14 teams, three of which are Girls Teams and ages range from Under 7’s to Under 18 plus a Senior Team. The present Manager of the Senior side is Brett Barlow and he has been joined by Steve Callear, Steve was the Club’s Captain for 10 years and he played and captained the side during its most successful period in the 90’s. The Old Boys ambition is still to strive for a home of its own where all Members can have a facility of their own. The Club now has four Girls Teams at U8, 10, 12 and a Ladies team, so this section of the Club continues to grow rapidly. The Old Boys managed, after a very close game, to gain silverware last season, when they won the Staffordshire Senior Vase trophy with a narrow win after extra time against Norton United at Stafford Rangers Ground. During the close season Leek CSOB won The FA Community Award for 2011 when they were awarded The FA Development Club County Award for the region of Staffordshire.

First team reports‌
Saturday 16th March: WEST 4 Atherton Collieries 1
This was a must win game if we were to keep in the top 6 pack and a confident Atherton Collieries side arrived hard on the heels of their 5-4 away win over 7th placed Cheadle Town a few days earlier. The first couple of half chances fell to West as firstly Tommy Walsh and Lee Malkin combined to set up the advancing Callum Jones whose shot was blocked at the last second. Five minutes into the Gareth Thomas went close and then on 7 minutes we had Atherton’s first response when a low cross from the right was smothered by Ben Simpson. After 12 minutes an Atherton free kick was hoisted into the box but headed clear by Callum Schofield and Atherton captain Cooke curled his effort over the bar from 20 yards. West replied with a great chance created when Thomas sent Malkin in on goal but his shot was parried by the Atherton keeper and rebounded just wide of Tommy Walsh. On 15 minutes an Atherton corner from the left followed the same sequence as the earlier free kick with Schofield clearing and Cooke shooting over the bar from distance. West nearly went ahead after 20 minutes when a defensive mix up in the Atherton defence left Lewis Schofield with a clear run in on goal only to shoot wide. West were asking all the questions as the visitors looked increasingly jittery at the back and after 25 minutes West deserved went ahead when Lee Malkin picked up the ball outside the area to run across and past his man, draw the keeper and score with a clinical finish just inside the post. A minute later and he was at it again but this time the keeper managed to save low to his right. West were now in the ascendency as Atherton wobbled and on 28 minutes Dave Kilbride pushed forward, fed Danny Summers who played in Malkin again to shoot over. As half time neared it was Callum Jones turn to be provider only for Lewis Schofield to cut in from the right wing and fire wide of the goal to leave the score at 1-0 at half time. The second half started with West looking to press home the earlier dominance and anther good Schofield cross on 50 minutes saw Tommy Walsh denied by Atherton keeper Williams. 5 minutes later and the second goal duly arrived when a Thomas corner was headed home emphatically at the near post from 6 yards by Dave Kilbride. On 58 minutes the visitors defence was again all over the place following a goal mouth scramble and it was another 10 minutes before Atherton managed an attempt at goal when a fine volley from a right wing cross was saved by Ben Simpson. Lee Malkin was causing havoc every time he ran at the defence and after 69 minutes it was 3-0 when he cut in from the right to burst into the area and fire low past the keeper. Two minutes later and it could have been 4 when Tre Willis was really unlucky with a great effort from a Callum Jones cross. On 75 minutes the visitors got a foothold in the game when the aptly named substitute Atherton fired home from close range after West failed to clear a long free kick into the heart of the penalty area, and on 77 minutes West substitute Taylor was dispossessed on the visitors left flank and the resultant advance and cross wasted by another Atherton effort high over the bar. The game opened up more in the closing 10 minutes as players tired but West continued to stay positive and counter attack as the visitors pushed forward. The final goal arrived in the 89th minute when the Atherton keeper and defender collided leaving Malkin the simple task of stroking the ball into an empty net to complete his hat trick and seal a decisive 4-1 victory. This was another excellent team performance despite injuries and illness depriving the squad of regulars Aston, Potts and Shillito. It was good to see Dave Conlon back in action against his old club and a return to fitness for Danny Summers and Mark Woodcock.

From the Terrace… It’s been yet another exciting couple of weeks at Brookburn Road and hopefully this time I’ve survived the dreaded editors cut as so much has been going on. Nelson was truly ‘the longest game’ as not only did West battle through 10 minutes of added on time to secure a fantastic 3-2 victory but having had to leave early I was relying on text message updates for the score. It was an excruciating wait for the final whistle and people must have thought I was mad standing in the corner, clutching my phone, jumping up and down when it finally came through at almost 5 o’clock! Unfortunately even in this modern era I couldn’t even fall back to twitter as it was my responsibility to keep it updated! Fortunately thanks to the power of twitter it was good to meet three directors from 1874 Northwich at the Atherton game. Fresh from the members vote on a new badge and kit for next season they were taking in a NWCFL ground subject to their election to the league next season. They will be ground sharing with Winsford United if all goes well and like us will be a fan/volunteer led club. They already have over 200 members signed up with their aim to eventually returning a team to Northwich. I hope we can welcome then back next season (unless we are promoted of course). I wish them all the best. Rob McKay
The FA Vase Final will be on Saturday 4 May 2013 at Wembley at 3.00pm and with the ticket prices set at £15 for adults and £5 for U16’s and also with the availability of purchasing tickets on TheFA.com.

Reserve team report‌ Saturday 16th March: Cheadle Town 4 WEST 0 Saturday 16th March saw West Didsbury Reserves visit Cheadle Town Reserves in the League Cup quarter final. Whilst Cheadle are flying high in the league this was a game that West felt they had a good chance of winning. The game between the two clubs in the league match was very close with West going down 1-0 but dominating the game. West started well, controlling the game, they moved the ball well and pressed Cheadle high up the pitch. West unfortunately had to make an early change when Cathel Mcloughlin twisted an ankle following a tackle from behind. This allowed the introduction of Ben Daniels who normally plays in goal, making his debut as an outfield player. West however continued to dominate and came close with shots from Bobby Ashcroft and Gary Lilley. With 40 minutes gone West lost the ball in midfield and Cheadle capitalised on the mistake playing a quick ball to their centre forward who beat the West centre backs to push the ball past the advancing Conrad Betton in the West goal. In the second half West again started brightly but couldn't get the equiliser they were searching for. After 25 minutes of the second half Cheadle got a free kick outside the West box. The ball was curled round the wall which was saved well by the keeper only for him to see the ball rebound to a Cheadle player who scored from close range. A third goal was quickly conceded from a corner when the ball was again only half cleared and Cheadle reacting the quicker. West introduced their only other substitute, 16 year old Nathaniel Adan-Craig for the injured Danny Iredale at right back who linked well with Ben Daniels, but could do nothing to stop Cheadle scoring a forth goal late on in the game. Whilst this was a heavy defeat, the positives have to be the number of young players who are now making their mark within the second team squad such as Ben Daniels, Nathaniel Adam-Craig, Tommy and Kyle Hendley and Mike Kennedy all who are 21 or under. WHAT’S OUR
STORY?
Newly elected North West Counties League side West Didsbury and Chorlton FC, have come a long way in their 105 year history which began back in 1908 when the club was founded as Christ Church A.F.C. by Mr R F Hartley, a Sunday School Superintendent at the church on Princess Parkway, West Didsbury. West first played in the Manchester Alliance League until the outbreak of the First World War (1914-1918). After the War the club joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League for the 1920/21 season and had to change its name to West Didsbury AFC, as the League did not permit association with any other body. The club was placed in Divisions 1 and A and stayed in the top flight for 25 seasons. The first honours were double runners up in Div 1 and Rhodes Cup in 1922/23, and the club remained in that league until 2006, winning many honours and providing 4 League Presidents along the way. Many of the current committee were players in that league. The club played at Christie Playing Fields from before 1914 but had to relocate when given notice to quit by the Playing Fields Society in the mid 80’s when that body decided to sell the land for commercial gain. After several years nomadic existence the club kicked off the 1997-98 season at their splendid new home at The Recreation Ground at Brookburn Road, and began to develop a vision for a community club. This was down to the hard work of a core of players and Committee who refused to let the club fold and secured the new facilities via a Lottery grant, new sponsors and fundraising, but without a penny of help from the Playing Fields Society proceeds. Further name change followed in 2003 to reflect our new location in Chorlton and we were elected to the Manchester League in 2006. In 2007/8 Season West won Manchester League silverware for the first time, lifting the Murray Shield in the last game of our centenary year. That team was the nucleus of the previously successful junior team and the following season West just missed promotion to the Premier Division and again reached the Murray Shield Final.
With a new management team led by Andy Nelson, who had previously managed at Leigh RMI, the 2009/10 season was very successful and honours spread throughout the club. The 1st team won the Murray Shield, (the third consecutive year we have been in the final) and finishing runners-up in the league. The second team won the Bridgewater League Cup and the U17 Youth team won their League. In 2010/2011 the 1st team won the Manchester League First Division title in style with a fantastic points total (65 points out of 72 possible). This ranks as one of the highest points totals per game in the history of the Manchester League dating back over a century. The clubs reserve team and youth teams also had terrific seasons, resulting in promotion and for the second year reaching the Bridgewater Cup Final. The clubs ‘A’ team finished and the Youth team reached yet another final where they were just pipped to the trophy by New Mills. The Veterans were runners up in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans League and then started a second veterans team such was the interest in the club. Plans were also made to formally integrate junior football as the club Vision is to be a FA Charter Standard Community Club in every sense. In recent seasons several players who started at West have been signed by top non league clubs, but such is the spirit of the club that many players return to what they see as a family club. The club now looks forward to fulfilling its ambition to play at the highest possible level it can whilst continuing to be run as a community club and transition to the NWCFL. The ground and facilities have been further improved and floodlights erected to meet grading requirements and West competed in the FA Vase for the first time in 2011-2012 as a Step 7 club. The club was duly elected to the NWCFL at the AGM on 16th June 2012.
