Bootle FC

WELCOME Today we welcome Bootle for another milestone, our first appearance in the quarter final of the MEN United League Challenge Cup. Bootle are a club with a long tradition and proud history in the NWCFL and going into today’s game they sit above us in the league table, and current form guide, thanks to a very good run of form including recent wins against Alsager, Congleton, AFC Liverpool, Bacup and lastly at St. Helens last Saturday. Our first encounter against Bootle was a couple of seasons back when we were in our first season in the NWCFL and Division 1, when we lost 1-2 away in a close contest in an earlier round of the Challenge Cup. Last season we were soundly beaten at Bootle in August as we adjusted to life in our first season in the Premier Division but then in November won a 7 goal thriller 4-3 here at home when Tommy Walsh, Rick Gleave and Graham Kay were the West scorers. Earlier this season, back in November, we recorded a creditable 2-1 victory away at Bootle, which kick started an unbeaten run through November and December, before the recent erratic weather, fixtures and form in the first 5 weeks of 2015. Our trip to Winsford last weekend to take on 1874 Northwich was a tale of two halves. A very poor first half hour display on a really poor playing surface resulted in 4 goals conceded and some heavy punishment from a very eager home side. Some second half changes and a more spirited performance saw us score twice without reply from the home side for a more respectable final score. This game was a good example of the fine margins between success and failure at this level and the effect conditions can have on attitude. This afternoon is a real chance for us to quickly put the disappointment of last week behind us and there is a lot to play for with a two legged semi-final awaiting the winners of today’s game. It would be a great boost to get a result today and kick start the rest of the season after the recent bad weather disruptions and postponements. We now have a few rearranged midweek home games in March and you’ll see details of those on the revised fixture list later in the programme. Finally, to use the old cliché, let’s take one game at a time and get behind Andy and the lads and look forward to a good game this afternoon. We extend a warm welcome to all our visitors today, both from Bootle and beyond and wish everyone a safe return journey after the game.

UPCOMING FIXTURES The result of various postponements and the revised league fixtures is that we are away from home for the next 3 league games against Winsford United next Tuesday evening 17 th, at Congleton on Sat 21st and then at Colne on Sat 28th. Our next first team home game is Tuesday 3rd March against AFC Liverpool, the first of 5 successive home games during March. Next Wednesday evening 18th February we will host the inter league game between the Lancashire and Cheshire League and the Liverpool League which kicks off at 7.30pm. Admission is £1 and the L+C League will be issuing a programme for that game. Rob Turley Thank you to Graham Currey for providing the pictures in the programme today.

From the Dugout‌ Good Afternoon and welcome to Brookburn Road for today's game against Bootle. Its a big day for everyone involved at the club as we're into the last eight of the MEN United Cup for the first time ever. Although we enjoyed cup success at this level back in our first season when we collected the First Division Trophy with a 1-0 over Abbey Hey at Runcorn Linnets in 2013 this is the first time we've reached this stage of the competition. Its not our first time we've met Bootle in this competition either as back in 2012 we reached the 3rd round, having already taken a Premier Division scalp in Norton United in the 2nd round, and we were unlucky to come away with a 2-1 last minute defeat at the Delta Taxis Stadium We meet today as equals however and we've already enjoyed a close encounter in the league this season when this time it was us who grabbed the points with a late Alex Baird winner. The previous meeting between our respective teams at this venue last season was also a close affair in which we ran out 4-3 winners having lead 4-1 with not long left in the game. What we can take for granted from Bootle is that they are not a side who will ever give up and that there is no such thing as a lost cause. We will have to play to our best today to secure progression into the next round. Since we were last with you in these pages the weather has largely dominated the news with us defeating St Helens Town 3-0 at home and losing 4-2 away to 1874 Northwich last weekend. The St Helens win was as dominant as a performance as we've had all season and although we may have been fortunate with one decision at 0-0 we were well worthy of our win, and on another day the margin for victory could have been double. The finish from Adam Hilton to give us the lead was as good a goal as you will see all season and he's certainly scored some terrific goals recently. In player news we've seen the departure of Chris McDonagh to Northern Premier League side Trafford. Experienced manager Graham Heathcote has taken over the club as they battle to avoid relegation and he phoned me in search of an experienced player with the ability to score goals. 'Macca" certainly boasts that ability and we wish him all the best at his new club. I was sadly unable to attend the 1874 fixture but Steve Settle took charge in my absence. It was obviously not the result we were looking for and to be 0-4 after half an hour is a nightmare situation, however, we didn't let our heads drop and we pushed them to the final whistle, notched two deserved goals and it was the home side rather than ourselves who were grateful to hear the final whistle. I'd like to round off today by welcoming the players and officials of Bootle as well as the supporters of both teams today. Please enjoy the game and join us in the clubhouse afterwards where we hope we will celebrating progression to the semi final. Enjoy the game‌ Andy Nelson

West 3 St Helens Town 0 match report‌ In tough conditions West produced one of their most accomplished displays of the season to record their first win of 2015. West welcomed St Helens Town to Brookburn Road knowing that victory would secure a league double over them and were able to welcome back Matt Eckersley into the starting line-up and Scott Mason back onto the bench. After suffering a head injury at Squires Gate Kieran Brocklehurst dropped to the bench as manager Andy Nelson reshuffled his line up as Nic Evangelinos moved into the middle with Eckersley behind him. West started brightly with Lewis Schofield forcing the St Helens keeper Rory Crowther into an acrobatic save after just four minutes when hit a shot from outside the area. West continued to press and penned the visitors in thanks to persistent pressure off the ball from Evangelinos, Matt Eckersley and Gary Lilley. West were almost gifted the lead on 16 minutes as the St Helens goalkeeper received a low back pass, rushed out to clear the ball and scooped it over his shoulder with only a superb block preventing Evangelinos from scoring. Although West dominated the opening stages they visiting side probably had the best chance of the opening 25 minutes when Cole Ashton found himself on the end of a cross whilst unmarked at the far post; however he couldn’t convert as his header rolled inches past the post. West made them pay as they took the lead three minutes later as Adam Hilton continued his quest for goal of the season with another contender as he cut inside from the right hand side, beat his man and curled a left footed shot into the top left hand corner from 20 yards out. The major talking point of the first half came on 38 minutes as Callum Schofield was adjudged to have fouled Ashton on the half way line, however with the visiting side racing away in a two-on-one advantage and bearing down on goal, the referee brought the game back to award a yellow card to Schofield. It was a let off for West and they almost doubled their lead seconds later when Lewis Schofield and Matt Eckersley worked the ball down the left and crossed it in to Evangelinos whose first time volley flashed just passed the post‌barely. It would have capped off terrific possession football for West and a goal would have capped off the team goal of the season and West went into the half with a deserved 1-0 lead. West came out for the second half and immediately came close to doubling their lead as Evangelinos was released down the right hand side down the touchline beating his man and cutting into the penalty area before forcing the St Helens goalkeeper into a good save low at his near post. Evangelinos would not be denied his goal as on 48 minutes as he broke through the offside trap, his initial shot was well saved by Crowther but he scooped up the rebound and calmly rolled into the bottom left corner from outside the area. He almost immediately added his second as he again broke free of the offside trap: his lobbed shot beat the goalkeeper but just evaded the top of the crossbar. Lewis Schofield was the next West player to create a chance as he burst down the left, raced into the penalty but, aided by a divert, fired his shot into the goals stored in the car park behind the Rob Turley stand. Manager Andy Nelson introduced Jerome Bryson and Scott Mason in place of the impressive Adam Hilton and Matt Eckersley. Bryson made an immediate impact as he and Mason worked the right hand side and whipped in a series of crossed from the touchline. On 75 minutes it was 3-0 as another Bryson cross came in, it was headed up into the air by the St Helens defender but it came down to Jordan Poole who volleyed it into the roof of the net from 20 yards out. It was an impressive finish from Poole to register his first ever West goal. Poole almost made it four a minute later as he received a pass at the edge of the area but fired his shot high and past the post whilst on the turn for what would have been another superb goal. In the final minutes a game that had been devoid in any way of bad challenges managed to finish 10 versus 10 as Callum Schofield was dismissed for a second yellow card for a shirt pull at the edge of the area. Then, just three minutes later St Helens Town were reduced to 10 men as Jordan Stevenson was shown a straight red card for a foul on Mark Rogers. The late dismissals would not over shadow a superb team performance as West stretched their unbeaten home run to five games. Nic Evangelinos… One new player who may have caught the eye of West fans is 20 year old striker/winger Nic Evangelinos. Nic, who has already impressed with 4 goals in 9 games, is a pacey forward recently signed from Banbury United. Although still young, Nic has experience at a higher level with the likes of Ashton United and Coventry Sphinx and Rugby Town. He has also previously been at Leicester City's academy, as well as having featured for the Birmingham FA Under 18s side.

The MEN UNITED Cup The Men United Cup is in support of the campaign currently being run by The League’s Official Charity Partner, Prostate Cancer UK. Paul Lawler, League Development Officer, said: “The North West Counties League was delighted to link up with Prostate Cancer UK at the start of this season, in order to raise awareness of the Men United campaign and highlight the great work Prostate Cancer UK is currently doing in raising awareness of Prostate Cancer within the football community. The draw for the Quarter Finals of the MEN United Cup was made following the Runcorn Town v Cammell Laird 1907 game. Glyn Davies and Alan Bennett conducted the draw, with John Deal and Dave Tomlinson supervising. 1874 Northwich 4 West 2 match report‌ Despite having to play on a surface better suited for herding cattle West were taught a lesson in clinical finishing by 1874 Northwich. West were without Callum Schofield and Gary Lilley due to suspension but were able to welcome back Richmond Botchey, Rick Gleave and Tre BaldwinWillis to the squad after long term absences. West were on the back foot immediately as the hosts put the West goal under intense pressure and forced a series of corners before goalkeeper Paul Hughes punched away a free kick for the first save of the game. Hughes was called into action again making another save at his near post. West looked to have weathered the immediate storm then 1874 took the lead on 6 minutes when a ball was punted through midfield, a flick on released Michael Brandon and he finished by lobbing it over Paul Hughes who could only get a glove to the ball. The huge number nine was then in the book a second time for a late challenge on Scott Mason. West grew into the game and tried to pass their way out of trouble despite the pitch conditions. Their first chance of the game came when a free kick was flicked on by Mark Rogers and saved low by Matthew Conkie. West continued to grow into the game and Matt Eckersley capped a good West move through the middle by rolling a tame shot straight into the keepers hands. The second goal came on 23 minutes, slightly against the run of play as the hosts had been happy to launch the ball long, when another long ball stuck in the mud and Neil Chappell capitalised to round Hughes and tap into an empty net despite appeals for offside. After that the floodgates opened as Brandon added his second on 26 minutes, turning in the box and hammering it into the corner, before Matthew Ward made it 4-0 with a goal of the season contender when he fired into the top corner from almost 40 yards. In attack West were simply guilty of overplaying the ball in possession on a surface not fit for football and defensively naïve as they failed to deal with 1874s directness. The half ended with the game threatening to boil over, as Alex Baird was on the receiving end of a late challenge from Stuart Wellstead and both were booked before Matt Eckersley was literally wrestled to the ground off the floor. In the second half West came out more determined and Scott Mason almost pulled one back from the kick off forcing Conkie to make a top save low and to his left immediately from kick off. Steve Settle, standing in for Andy Nelson, rang the changes introducing Jordan Poole, Richmond Botchey and Tre Baldwin-Willis in place of Lewis Schofield, Scott Jones and Adam Hilton as West continued to search for a goal against a side that had conceded just 12 times in the league all season. At the other end Hughes made a fantastic fingertip save tipping over a free header to deny Brandon his hat-trick. 1874 almost added a fifth after a goalmouth scramble saw several chances blocked before the home team fired high and wide. West continued to make chances at the other end as Evangelinos broke down the left and selfless pulling it back rather than shooting himself. On the hour mark the deadlock was almost broken as West fired shot after shot across the penalty area with the 1874 defenders making repeated blocks. Rogers forced a good save out of Conkie again as he tipped over a header destined for the top corner. Sadly for Conkie, it would be his last action of the game as we was forced off through injury and Wellstead donned the gloves. West continued to press 1874 who suffered another injury as Ryan Mitchell was forced off after a lengthy delay when he collided with Botchey. West were finally rewarded with a goal as Eckersley ran down the right and pulled it back to Evangelinos to slot under the keeper. A minute later Baldwin-Willis had a shot fly wide of the near post before it was 4-2 with Eckersley curling a beauty into the top corner from the edge of the area. There was still time for West to have another chance blocked desperately before the referee hurriedly blew for full time and condemned West to their third consecutive away defeat. Prestwich Heys aim to follow West One of our former Manchester League opponents has announced plans to follow in the footsteps of West. Prestwich Heys have applied for promotion to the North West Counties League Division 1 for the 2015-2016 season, Press officer Steve Howard stated; “We have watched how West Didsbury & Chorlton have progressed since they moved from the Manchester League, and we believe we can do the same.” Prestwich must finish in the top five of the Manchester League if their bid for promotion is to be successful, as well as introducing a host of ground improvements, including covered seating, floodlights around the ground and a new changing room. The club are confident that this can be achieved, as they currently sit 4th in the Manchester League standings and have acquired planning permission for the necessary upgrades. Prestwich are a club with plenty of history, having been founder members of the North West Counties, and they are also a well run outfit, boasting one of the biggest support bases at their level. It is always good to see local clubs progressing through the pyramid, and so we wish them all the best in their bid for promotion and hope to face them in a league derby in the North West Counties Premier in the coming seasons!

Tuck shop helps fund Wests Junior football… We have been delighted to get more volunteers involved at West this season; one new initiative was recently unveiled when Dave Wright started a Tuck Shop at clarkrichards where he works in Macclesfield. This was a great surprise and is fantastic initiative which will help our continued development of junior football. We are really excited about the future as the new youth structure for the club progresses, we now can provide a great facility with a number of junior teams playing on our new pitches at Hardy Farm. The donations will make a difference to children and families and help provide junior football in this area. Dave explained that he was keen to help support the club and that Nick Sherrat and Rick Hayes clarkrichards owners and directors who are both mad about football, kindly agreed to allow him to open a tuck shop to provide funds towards West junior football initiatives. A massive thank you to Dave, Nick, Rick and all at clarkrichards, we look forward to seeing you at one of our home games. Pictured above are: Amy Sheridan (right) and Jess Clifford (left).

History ‌

Bootle FC

Original club The original Bootle F.C. were formed in 1880 and played at Hawthorne Road. In 1889/90 Bootle became founder members of the Football Alliance. That season was their most successful as they finished league runners-up, reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, where they lost to Blackburn Rovers (0-7). When the Alliance merged with the Football League in 1892, Bootle became founder members of the new Second Division. However, despite a respectable 8th place final position, the club dropped out after one season (and were replaced by neighbours Liverpool) and seemingly disappeared due to financial problems. Football returned to Hawthorne Road when a new club, Bootle Athletic. was later formed with the new team initially playing in the Liverpool Leagues. In 1948 when they were elected to the Lancashire Combination 2, which they won at the first attempt. However, they struggled in the top-flight and after several tough seasons withdrew and folded during the 1953/54 campaign. Modern club In 1953, the current club was formed at first as Langton and played in the local leagues. After a very successful spell in the Liverpool County Combination (which they won on numerous occasions) the club reverted back to its better known identity of Bootle F.C. in 1973 and a year later joined the Lancashire Combination, which they won in 1976 and 1977. They then joined the Second Division of the Cheshire County League, which they won in their first season, and were promoted to the First Division. In 1982 the Cheshire County League was one of the leagues that merged to form the North West Counties League, which Bootle duly joined, becoming a member of the First Division. The club spent most of their time in the First Division until 2000 when they dropped into the Second Division. However, despite finishing 6th in 2002, the club dropped into the Liverpool County Combination. In 2006 they were elected back into Division 2 of the North West Counties League. In 2009 Bootle won promotion to the NWCL Premier Division and also won the Championship. The Bucks first season back in the Premier Divison was relatively sucessful finishing 3rd in the league and also a sucessful run in the FA Vase. Bootle`s attendance record was also broken when 1088 (previously 750) watched the Liverpool senior cup tie between the Bucks and Everton.

A Brief History… West Didsbury and Chorlton FC, have come a long way in their 105 year history which began back in 1908 when the club was founded as Christ Church A.F.C. by Mr R F Hartley, a Sunday School Superintendent at the church on Princess Parkway, West Didsbury.

West played friendlies at first and then in the Manchester Alliance League until the First World War 1914. After the War the club joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League for the 1920/21 season and had to change its name to West Didsbury AFC, as that League did not permit a name suggesting association with any other body. The club was placed in Divisions 1 and A, staying in the top flight for 25 seasons. The first honours were double runners up in Div 1 and Rhodes Cup in 1922/23, and the club remained in the L+C League until 2006, winning many honours and providing 4 League Presidents along the way. The home ground from before 1914 until the mid 1980’s was Christie Playing Fields, and then the owners, Manchester and Salford Playing Fields Society, gave the club notice to quit having decided to sell off the land for commercial development – now ironically called ‘Christie Fields’ office park. After several years’ nomadic existence searching for a new home, the club acquired the redundant and overgrown Recreation Ground at Brookburn Road in 1996, and began to restore this to active use and develop a vision for a community club. This was down to the hard work of a core of players and Committee who refused to let the club fold. Work was completed in time to start the 1997-98 season using excellent new changing rooms and clubhouse facilities aided by a Lottery grant, new sponsors and members’ fundraising, but without a penny from the Playing Fields Society sale proceeds. Further name change followed in 2003 to reflect the new location in Chorlton and the club was then elected to the Manchester League in 2006. In 2007/8 West won its first Manchester League silverware lifting the Murray Shield in the last game of our centenary year. That team was the nucleus of the previously successful junior team and the following season 2008/09 West just missed promotion to the Premier Division and again reached the Murray Shield Final. won their League. With a new management team led by Andy Nelson, 2009/10 was very successful and honours spread throughout the club. The 1st team won the Murray Shield (the third consecutive year in the final) and was league runners-up. The reserves won the Bridgewater League Cup and the U17 Youth team won their League.

In 2010/2011 the 1st team won the Manchester League First Division title in style with a fantastic 65 points out of 72 possible. This ranks as one of the highest points totals per game in Manchester League history dating back over a century. The clubs reserve team and youth teams also had terrific seasons, resulting in promotion and for the second year reaching the Bridgewater Cup Final. The Youth team reached yet another final where they were just pipped to the trophy by New Mills. The Veterans were runners up in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans League and then started a second veterans team such was the interest in the club. Plans were also made to formally integrate junior football as the club Vision is to be a FA Charter Standard Community Club, playing at the highest possible level it can whilst remaining financially viable. Further improved saw floodlights erected in 2011 to meet FA requirements and West competed in the FA Vase for the first time in 2011-2012 as a Step 7 club. Election to the NWCFL followed in June 2012 and the club had an incredible first season winning the Div1 Trophy, finishing in 3rd position after an amazing run in during March and April to secure promotion and also winning a guaranteed FA Cup place. The over 45’s team again chipped in with Cheshire Veterans league silverware. 2013-14 saw the club meet a number of challenges on and off the field by recovering from a series of early season setbacks and defeats in August to consolidate with a very creditable 12th place league finish. Two new stands were installed to improves the spectator facilities, new grass pitches and youth teams were added as part of the long term development plan, whilst remaining as a volunteer run, ‘not for profit’ club. The other historic milestones achieved during the season were the 2-0 home victory over Abbey Hey in the club’s first ever appearance in the FA Cup followed by a 2-1 first ever FA Vase victory away at NCEL Rossington Main near Doncaster in mid September. This season the club hosts Brighouse Town from the Evo Stik league in the FA Cup at the end of August having been given a walk by the FA against NWCFL new club Cammell Laird 1907.
