WELCOME to the CFFL SHIELD FINAL This is the second final of the Manchester Saturday Morning Fooball League 2013/14 Season. The MSMFL is now in its twenty fifth year. It was formed in 1989 with the amagamation of the Manchester Education Football League and the Christian Fellowship Football League The CFFL denotes the Shield was originally a trophy played for in that League. It is now the the trophy that is played for, in knockout competition, by the MSMFL’s Second Division clubs. Tonight’s final is a local ‘derby’ between AFC Middleton and North End FC. Middleton have had another successful season’. They are the Second Division Champions and will be promoted to the First Division. So far this season ‘Middy’ have won all but one of their twelve league games. In contrast North End started the league season by losing their first 5 games. However an outstanding run has seen NEFC win six out of seven league games, and they are well placed to take Runners-up. North End may be encouraged by the recognition that Middleton have actually lost twice this season (Oooh!), with the other reverse coming in the CFFL group fixture with Hazel Grove Bulls. They will have to be on top form this evening, because that one in seven league defeat was at the hands of – you’ve guessed it... AFC Middleton! Certainly there’s a ‘Champs –v- Young Guns’ feel about the game. So this final contest promises to be hard fought - and a good advert for the division! The President’sShield Final Last week saw West Didsbury and Chorlton FC host the President’s Shield Final between Cassidys FC and Alkrington Dynamos. In a fast and pulsating game Alkrington ran out 4-2 winners. April / May sees West Didsbury & Chorlton AFC host 2 further MSMFL Finals. On Wednesday 23rd April the First Division STEELES Shield Final brings together Torpedo Chorlton and North Manchester FC. The Kick-off is 7pm. Then on Saturday 3rd May - AFC Middleton play Brushes Rangers Spartak in the ’Open’ Manchester Evening News Cup Final. The kick off is at 10.30am. MSMFL Finals – Presentation Day Our LEAGUE PRESENTATION DAY will take place after the MEN Cup Final on Saturday 3rd May from 12.30pm at WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC. CUP FINAL, LEAGUE WINNERS and RUNNERS-UP TROPHIES together with INDIVIDUAL AWARDS will be presented in the Club House. ALL WELCOME!. THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING THE MSMFL FINALS AND ENJOY THE GAME. AFC Middleton ~ Building the club for more success! Once again AFC Middleton has enjoyed success both on and off the field. They have made every effort to make this season as productive as the last. The pre-season goal was attract another major sponsor to the club. Manager Steve Horan takes up the story – “We have a very successful relationship with the recruitment company SLR Group. But to give us a more semi-professional outlook, we needed to attract another sponsor - to help fund training equipment and club track suits”. This objective was achieved when the Middleton businessman Gary Heslop and his company Gazzard Accounts Ltd joined the club. Gary has taken up the role of Club Chairman and supplied much needed extra funding. On the playing front, and following last seasons magnificent treble achievement, the team has evolved again. The squad has been strengthened with the acquisition of Bryan Robson, Carl Spears, Danny Anderson, Scot Taylor and Dominic Hallam. These additions have made the squad more competitive, fulfilling the manager maxim, ‘Never stand still in this game’. Once again, the club progressed to the quarter final of the Manchester FA Amateur Cup, only to be defeated in a penalty shoot-out by Farnworth Town. Going a goal down in the first minute, Middleton fought for most of the game to gain parity. They equalised in the last quarter of the game, but couldn’t get a winner in 90 minutes – or in extra time. In the CFFLShield Middleton topped their ‘Mini-League’ Group. They were then drawn in the Semi-Final to play Hazel Grove Bulls – a team that had beaten them 3-0 at home in the group stages. Middleton were this time drawn to play away at Torkington Park. On a day when the extreme windy conditions could have had an affect on the game; Middleton played some of their best and controlled football. With goals from Dominic Hallam, Kenny Tudor and Paul Crowther they turned the tables on the Stockport club - and ran out 3-0 winners. Tonight Middleton are involved in a local derby against neighbours North End FC, for whom Steve has great respect, especially their manager Patrick Conners. With the league title won the Middleton boys will be looking to make it a double!

The ‘Management’ Team Mr. Gary Heslop ~ Chairman. A ‘Football Nut’ who shares a love of watching Middleton with supporting Rochdale - home and away. However, the manager has to keep looking over his shoulder because he believes Gary could be the next Vincent Tam! Steve Horan ~ Team Manager. A man fuelled by a desire to succeed, Steve has had bags of success in Saturday and Sunday football over the last 25 years. Only the Manchester FA’s Saturday Amateur Cup trophy eludes him. The current Middleton side has lost quarter finals in successive seasons, but the boss firmly believes that this crop of players are not far away. Bernard Crowther. A great supporter of the club and very knowledgeable about the game. And he’s actually played this season. A massive help to the manager. The Manager;Steve Horan and Chairman; Gary Heslop watch on as players Kenny Tudor, Andy Onley and Chris Beresford show off the clubs new track suits & training kit.

MANCHESTER SATURDAY MORNING FOOTBALL LEAGUE

AFC Middleton ~ Player Profile Goalkeepers Lee Grogan. Has played in many finals throughout his semi pro and amateur career. He’s had another excellent season. He’s great handler and shot stopper. A very vocal keeper! Bryan Robson. Has been a great deputy to Lee but has had his opportunities restricted due to current injury Defenders Chris Jepson. Left the club last season to pursue a semi pro career with Rochdale Town. Returned to the club at the end of last season, but missed out on 2 finals. He’s determined to put things right this time. Converted to right back from midfield and has adapted very quickly Sam Cooke. Another consistent season for Sam who has played in the league for a number of years. A pacy defender these days. Chris Beresford. Tough tackling vocal defender, who puts his head and foot in where others wouldn't. A great clubman who likes to organise end of season events. A great Social Sec. Kenny Tudor. The Team Captain has won everything on the Saturday and Sunday amateur scene. Kenny as played for Steve for over 10 seasons. With great ability and quick feet, the evergreen skip has had another excellent season. George Walker. Played a variety of roles this season from left back to left & central midfield. Good on the ball with a lot pace. The club believe he’s the best young player in the league Carl Spears. Joined the club this season to play as a tough tackling left back. One of the reasons why the club has progressed this season Midfielders James Nutt. Appearances restricted of late. Suffered a serious injury in November but is looking sharp again now. Scored a spectacular opening goal in last seasons MEN Cup Final. Danny Anderson. It’s been a very frustrating season for young Dan with appearances curtailed due to injury. He has a games-to-goals ratio second to none and will be looking to make big impact next season. Very doubtful for tonight’s game. Andy Onley, The Club skipper who’s had an in and out season with work commitments and injury. Loves a tackle and has an abundance of energy. Has a great enthusiasm for the game - younger players take note, Mike Henson. Has an educated left peg and should score more goals.. But elegant to watch! Scott Taylor. A new recruit who has performed excellently - and scored goals. Will do even better if he adds consistency to his game. Has improved his battling qualities – so there’s more to come. Andrew Stafford. Teddy to his colleagues . You don't always know what you will get from this moody player with bags of ability. Can be a match winner or a massive flop… Steve believes the former. Likes the big occasion. Scored a brilliant second goal in last season’s MEN Final. Liam Murray. Has been in great form of late and can be a match winner. Works tirelessly down the right. Turned the game in last seasons President’s Final with a stunning super-subs performance. Forwards Danny Murray. The Clubs leading scorer and a man for big occasions. Scored a superb hat trick in last season’s MEN Final. A recent spat with the manager had the desired effect and he produced another hat trick against Medics in last weeks MEN Semi-Final. Dom Hallam. Another new recruitment who has helped transform the team this season. Dom has a brilliant games-to-goal ratio and gives the team another dimension with his pace. Paul Crowther. A manager’s dream who’s missed a lot of football through work commitments. A great touch player, with excellent all round ability for a big man. Matt Landregan. Has suffered throughout the season with injury, but if called upon is definitely a man for the big occasion.

The MSMFL Division 2 ~ Season Review It might seem from the league table that the Second Division has been a bit of a procession, Certainly AFC Middleton have won it ‘by a street’ with games to spare. But below them, there have been a ‘clutch’ of teams who have shown improvement in quality and playing strength. Inter Mancunia matched Middleton with five straight wins - and no defeats at the beginning of the season. Indeed the Hough End outfit can be said to have been ‘neck-and-neck’ with ‘Middy’ up to the Mid-Season break. But significantly Middleton inflicted an 8-1 CFFL (mini-league) defeat on the aspiring InterMancs just before the New Year recess. Thereafter Middleton began to pull away at the top. However Inter did put the breaks on briefly when they defeated Middleton 3-2 at the beginning of February. Heston FC are another team who began the season well with four wins. However in October they suffered consecutive defeats to Inter Mancunia and AFC Middleton, After that Heston were always playing catch-up, particularly after they lost again to the eventual champions in late November. In contrast North End FC started the league season by losing their first 5 games. However an outstanding recent run has seen them win six out of seven league games, Consequently North End are well placed to take Runners-up spot. Aldwyn Town and Hazel Grove Bulls have had to settle for ‘fair-to-middling’ seasons – but both have had their moments. Aldwyn will look to two League encounters with Inter Mancunia – A 5-5 draw away and a thumping 4-0 win at Dukinfield. And HGB’s beat Middleton 3-0 in a CFFL group game (Sorry Steve). Hewlett FC’s move to playing at the University-Northenden has enabled them to re-invent themselves. And they play in the Supplementary Cup Final later in the month. Perhaps Fielden Park should think about a similar move – or maybe go back ‘home’ to Arden - because we all want to see them in the 2014/15 Season. MANCHESTER SATURDAY MORNING FOOTBALL LEAGUE

NORTH END FC ~ Proud, Positive and looking to Push On! North End Football Club was established in 2011. In the Clubs first season they reached the Final of the CFFL Shield, winning the trophy with a win on penalties over Aldwyn Town. After a sketchy start to this season, North End have finally found their feet. The Club is on a unbeaten run in the league over February and March. At present they lie fourth in Division 2 - but if they win one of their two remain games they will clinch Runners-up spot - and secure Promotion!! In this years’ CFFL Shield ; after progressing through the group stages, North End came up against their toughest challenge. They travelled to play Hewlett FC in the Semi-final at the University Sports Ground, Northenden, which, though well maintained, isn't North End’s favourite. (This is saying something because they play on Broadhurst Playing Fields - which has struggled for fitness in midseason - editor’s note 1). The reason for North’s disdain has its roots in a 3-1 group game loss to Hewlett, on a very heavy pitch, in January. (Editors note 2) The ‘Semi’ presented a whole different set of problems, and could have swung the way of either side.. The weather conditions were appalling with strong winds dictating the quality of the play throughout. After going a goal down North End had to pull out something special to get back in the game. They found it with a controlled move, topped off with a stunning finish by Liam Edmonds. After 90 minutes, plus extra time, the tie was still deadlocked at 1-1. Penalties would have to decide the outcome... North End stepped up to go first and missed!! Visions of their M.E.N Quarterfinal loss, on penalties, to a very good Medics side, crept into the minds of both management and players. But they needn’t have worried - because North’s ‘keeper, Albert Powell, made a fantastic save to keep their hopes alive. North End then went on to score the rest of their penalties with Hewlett missing their fourth – and thus a 4-3 win was achieved.

The Veteran of the team with a commitment that is second to none! 2. Kyle Jackson. A hard tackling full back who has great potential. 3. Louis Whiteley – A fantastic footballer with an unorthodox style. A regular first team player. 4. Daniel ‘Jonesy’ Ashworth – In his first season at North End and a player who really puts a shift in!! 5. Ste Newbiggin Greenwood – Tackles hard (no seriously) even in training on his own team mates. He’s caused more injuries this season than the opposition. 6. Daniel ‘Pro’ Ryan – Has played for more professional clubs than Anelka! A rock solid centre half who has great ability and vision. 7. Craig Smith – MR Proper Miserable! He’s only smiled once, ever! M.O.M in the 2012 CFFL Shield Final. 8. Liam Edmonds – Thinks he’s Gareth Bale! Has made the transition from a full back to a winger. Probably for the best as he always stayed in the attacking half more than North’s own. 9. Samuel ‘The Ball Hogger’ Craig – WILL NOT pass the ball!! He has made about four passes all season. However, big improvement on the two last year. 10. Simon ‘Semi Pro’ Cryer – Left North End in 2012 to play at a higher level, - but soon came crawling back. CHEADLE The REFEREE Team Gavin Torpey is one of the Saturday Morning Leagues ‘Young & Keen’ Referees. He is 34; comes from the Altrincham area, and works as an Import Cargo Manager at MIA. After a ‘full’ playing ‘career’ in the Cheshire League on a Saturday and in several Sunday Leagues he was stuck for something to do, to fill the void. So he started Refereeing in the Altrincham & District League – in which he had also played. After enjoying a good season there, Gav wanted more experience and was recommended to the MSMFL. He has performed very well for two seasons and ‘the middle’ in the CFFL Final is just reward for his commitment and application. Chris Kelly. Chris used to be into ‘Motor-biking’ in a pacy ‘650’ way. On retiring (early) he decided to put fitness and family before the pleasures of the open road. And, with the money saved, ‘the world has been his lobster’. Consequently he has travelled near and far (even to the Soccerdome) on a variety of holidays. On Match days (just to warm up) he uses ‘Kelly pedal-power’ Chris Metcalfe. Chris used to play and manage in the MSMFL. Indeed he took Ashton Rovers to last years CFFL Final; and from the Second to First Division, as Champions, in the 2012/13 season. Many of Chris’ ‘reffing’ colleagues might suggest that his switch to ‘officiating’ is like a poacher turning game-keeper. Chris could be a ‘fiery’ character, both on the field and the touchline. He has however made excellent progress in his first season with the whistle. Warren Dodd. Great things come in small packages (or so Doddy tells us), which is just as well, because he works for UPS parcels. Warren is also the Secretary of Irlam Town FC, a club he played for many moons ago – when he had hair! On the ‘Reffing’ front, Warren regularly runs out in the MSMFL before heading off with Irlam. On Sunday’s he Refs in the Eccles Sunday League. MANCHESTER SATURDAY MORNING FOOTBALL LEAGUE
