OUR HOSTS ~ West Didsbury & Chorlton AFC are one of Manchester’s oldest and leading amateur clubs with vision to become a Community Club for the Chorlton area and South Manchester area. The club is based at ‘The Recreation Ground’ which is situated at the end of Brookburn Road, Chorlton, M21 8FF. The First Team and Reserves play in the FA Vase, Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy and North West Counties Football League. The A Team are in the Altrincham and District [Saturday] League and the Veterans teams in the Cheshire Veterans Football League on a Sunday. The club is a volunteer run, not for profit, members club, open to all. For further information go to http://www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk/

The REFEREE Team Ian Claridge has had a very busy season. Not only does he run out regularly in the MSMFL, he also Referees in the North West Counties, Manchester and Lancashire Leagues on a Saturday as well as the Oldham and Tameside Leagues on Sundays. Add to that County Appointments, Schools and Women’s football and you get the picture. And what did Ian do as pre-season training? Well, he cycled from Blackburn to Paris to raise 8K for Food-Bank and Carer Services Charities. Oh! And he has recently taken up Yoga and Boxing, His reward – promotion to be a Level 5 Referee! Denis McCarthy thinks he can match Ian. He’s approaching 100 game for the season – in the Lancs and Cheshire, North West Counties and North West Youth Alliance – and don’t ask about Sundays! He’s just done the prestige Manchester FA Sunday Amateur Cup Final... And what‘s he doing to end the season? Well, he’s running the line in the L&C’s Whitbread Cup Final and Reffing at Boundary Park in the Jewish League’s Feldman Cup. And if that’s not enough he’s running in the BUPA Manchester 10 K to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Charity. Please support Denis @ https://www.justgiving.com/manchestergreatrun2014/ Alan Griffiths is, by comparison, a mere mortal - only doing a couple of games a weekend. That because he works nights at Culemeta-Saveguard. Big AL is ‘Our Man at Blocksages’, the grassland he can fall out of bed to Referee on at weekends. Recently lost a line flag on Armadale Road, which has left him extremely distraught. He also Referees in the Hyde & Stockport Metro League on Sunday. And, he uses his push-bike to keep ‘youthful and slim’ - and to counter the effects of the odd pint and a ‘penchant for pies’ that he developed whilst at his previous job at ‘Park Cakes’ .

David Hall has finally moved from Audenshaw to Anglesey - where he has built a house on derelict foundations. But that doesn’t mean we ‘ve lost him in the MSMFL - just that travelling expenses for games will have to increase. Not true!, Dave has many other reasons to return to Manchester, He’s just retired as the Secretary’s of Brendan Bees Junior Football Club - but remains a staunch supporter. Then there’s also the fact that Dave’s wife is ‘A Fanatical – Season Ticket Holding Red’, and will be making fortnightly visits to OT. Not that Dave will accompany her.. That’s because, as many of you know, he is a ‘Scouse Red’

MANCHESTER SATURDAY MORNING FOOTBALL LEAGUE

It is now the trophy that is played for, in knockout competition, by ALL of MSMFL’s Clubs in ‘Open’ Competition. Today’s final is between AFC Middleton and Brushes Rangers Spartak. Middleton have had another ‘winning’ season. They are the Second Division Champions and will be promoted to the First Division. – which we all know is where they belong. They have also won their Second Division CFFL Shield. Brushes have finished the season well, only just falling short of honours in Division One. They are looking to finish the season on a high by winning the only trophy that has escaped them during their time in the MSMFL. On Wednesday 9th April West Didsbury and Chorlton FC hosted the Third Division President’s Shield Final between Cassidys FC and Alkrington Dynamos. In a fast and pulsating game Alkrington finally ran out 4-2 winners. AFC Middleton ~ Building the club for more success! Once again AFC Middleton has enjoyed success both on and off the field. They have made every effort to make this season as productive as the last. The pre-season goal was attract another major sponsor to the club. Manager Steve Horan takes up the story – “We have a very successful relationship with the recruitment company SLR Group. But to give us a more semi-professional outlook, we needed to attract another sponsor - to help fund training equipment and club track suits”. This objective was achieved when the Middleton businessman Gary Heslop and his company Gazzard Accounts Ltd joined the club. Gary has taken up the role of Club Chairman and supplied much needed extra funding. On the playing front, and following last seasons magnificent treble achievement, the team has evolved again. The squad has been strengthened with the acquisition of Bryan Robson, Carl Spears, Danny Anderson, Scot Taylor and Dominic Hallam. These additions have made the squad more competitive, fulfilling the manager maxim, ‘Never stand still in this game’. Middleton’s progress in the MSMFL’s open Manchester Evening News Cup competition saw them drawn at home in each of the four knock-out rounds. In the first round they dispatched struggling George FC from the competition by recording a 10-1 score line, with Dominic Hallam bagging six goals. The second round brought old adversaries Worsley Town to the North Manchester Academy. At half time the tie was in the balance at 2-2 - but top scorer Danny Murray scored in the second period and Middleton finished as 4-2 winners. In the ‘Quarters’ Middleton were stretched again. This time by Third Division title chasers Cassidys. In a game that went to extra-time, both sides went down to ten men, with Middleton winning by the odd goal in seven – with Murray and Andy Stafford bagging two apiece. In the Semi-Final Manchester Medics arrived to challenge Middleton’s march to the final. It was another tight game the home team took the lead, early in the second half, through a headed goal from that man Danny Murray. But with fifteen to play, Chris Murphy equalised for the Medics. But their joy was short lived as Murray scored twice in quick succession to clinch Middleton’s progress to the MEN Final

The ‘Management’ Team Mr. Gary Heslop ~ Chairman. A ‘Football Nut’ who shares a love of watching Middleton with supporting Rochdale - home and away. However, the manager has to keep looking over his shoulder because he believes Gary could be the next Vincent Tam! Steve Horan ~ Team Manager. A man fuelled by a desire to succeed, Steve has had bags of success in Saturday and Sunday football over the last 25 years. Only the Manchester FA’s Saturday Amateur Cup trophy eludes him. The current Middleton side has lost quarter finals in successive seasons, but the boss firmly believes that this crop of players are not far away. Bernard Crowther. A great supporter of the club and very knowledgeable about the game. And he’s actually played this season. A massive help to the manager. The Manager;Steve Horan and Chairman; Gary Heslop watch on as players Kenny Tudor, Andy Onley and Chris Beresford show off the clubs new track suits & training kit.

AFC Middleton ~ Player Profiles Goalkeepers Lee Grogan. Has played in many finals throughout his semi pro and amateur career. He’s another excellent season A great handler and shot stopper. A very vocal keeper Bryan Robson. Has been a great deputy to Lee but has had his opportunities restricted due to current injury Leon Allen. A great squad player who has replaced Lee and Bryan when they have been unavailable. Has performed well and been unlucky not to have played more.

Defenders Chris Jepson. Left the club last season to peruse his career a semi pro with. Rochdale Town. Returned to the club at the end of last season but missed out on 2 finals. He’s determined to put things right this time. Converted to right back from midfield and has adapted very quickly Sam Cooke. Good on the ball with a lot pace. The club firmly believe he is the best young player in the league Carl Spears. Joined the club this season to play as a tough tackling left back. One of the reasons why the club has progressed this season

Midfielders James Nutt. Has had his appearances restricted of late. Suffered a serious injury in November but is looking sharp again now. Scored a spectacular opening goal in last seasons. MEN. Cup Final. Danny Anderson. Its been a very frustrating season for young Dan with appearances curtailed due to injury. He has a games to goals ratio second to none and will be looking to make big impact next season. Very doubtful. Andy Onley, The Club skipper who’s had an in and out season with work commitments and injury. Loves a tackle and has an abundance of energy. Has a great enthusiasm for the game - younger players take note, Mike Henson. Has an educated left peg and should score more goals… But elegant to watch! Scott Taylor. A new recruit who’s performed excellently- and scored goals. Could do even better if he adds consistency to his game. Has improved his battling qualities but there’s more still to come. Andrew Stafford. Teddy to his colleagues and a lad with a great touch and bags of ability. Thrives on the big occasion and scored a brilliant second goal in last season’s MEN Final. Works tirelessly down the right. Turned the game in last seasons President’s Final with a stunning super subs performance.

Forwards Danny Murray. The Clubs leading scorer and a man for big occasion. Scored a superb hat trick in last years MEN Final. He repeated the feat in this years MEN Semi-Final against Medics Then took his goal tally for the season to 34 with four more against North End in last months CFFL Shield Final. Dom Hallam. Another new recruitment who has helped transform the team this season. Dom has a brilliant games to goal ratio and gives the team a different dimension with his pace. Paul Crowther. A managers dream who has missed a lot of football through work commitments. Great ‘time’ player with excellent all round ability player for a big man. Should score more goals! Matt Landregan. Has suffered throughout out the season with injury, but if called upon is definitely a man for the big occasion

The MSMFL Division Two ~ Season Review It might seem from the league table that the Second Division has been a bit of a procession, Certainly AFC Middleton are worthy Champions having won it ‘by a street’ - with games to spare. But below them, there have been a ‘clutch’ of teams who have shown improvement in quality and playing strength. Inter Mancunia matched Middleton with five straight wins - and no defeats at the beginning of the season. Indeed the Hough End outfit were ‘neck-and-neck’ with ‘Middy’ up to the Mid-Season break. Thereafter Middleton began to pull away at the top. However Inter did put the breaks on briefly when they defeated Middleton 3-2 at the beginning of February. Heston FC were another team that began the season well with four wins. However in October they suffered consecutive defeats to Inter Mancunia and AFC Middleton. They lost again to the eventual champions in late November, Nevertheless a run of ‘good’ results has seen the Chorlton club gradually climb the table to finish joint second. In contrast North End FC started the league season by losing their first 5 games. But an outstanding run has seen them win seven out of eight league games. The Moston lads also reached the CFFL Shield Final, losing out to AFC Middleton. But North End then gained reward as they joined Heston on 22 points to force a ‘play-off’ game for the Runners-Up prize. The game was played this week with North End FC winning it 4-1 – with all the goals coming in the second half. Aldwyn Town and Hazel Grove Bulls have had to settle for ‘fair-to-middling’ seasons – but both have had their moments. Aldwyn will look to two League encounters with Inter Mancunia – A 5-5 draw away and a 4-0 win at Dukinfield. And HGB’s beat Middleton 3-0 in a CFFL group game – which is no mean feat. Hewlett FC’s move to playing at the University-Northenden has enabled them to re-invent themselves. And they play in the Supplementary Cup Final later in the month. Perhaps Fielden Park should think about a similar move – or go home to Arden - because we all want to see them in the 2014/15 Season. Brushes Rangers Spartak ~ Showing signs of Cabinet Fever! Brushes Rangers Spartak are in their fifth season in the MSMFL. This morning they are chasing the only trophy that is missing from their collection during their time in the MSMFL – the Manchester Evening News Cup In their first season, 2009/10, Brushes won the CFFL Divisional Shield and were Runners-up in Division 2 – thereby winning promotion to the First Division. They also made their only other appearance in the MEN Cup Final in a 3-1 defeat by Manchester Medics. In their second season, 2010/11, as Spartak Brushes they won the First Division Championship. The following season, 2011/12, Brushes again challenged in the League, They eventually finishing third, but went on to beat Champions, Chadderton FC in the Steeles Shield Final. The current season has been one of ups and downs for the Tameside club. There have been some outstanding team and individual performances. Indeed for the last month Brushes pushed for League honours as they attempted to play several games they had in hand on the eventual Champions, Beechfield United. In the end fixture congestion, injuries and inconsistent player availability has seen them fall disappointingly short. However the Brushes management team would like to thank all the players for their commitment throughout this season and as they hope to end it on a high in the ‘prestige’ MEN Final. MEN Semi Final Report

Brushes Rangers Spartak 3 North Manchester 0 Initially this was a close tense battle with both sides vying for control in a fast and furious first half hour. Brushes then took the lead through Andrew Leech with a well taken finish, making it 1-0 at the break. North Manchester pressed early in the second half, but it was Brushes who doubled their advantage with a screamer from defender Allen Mcloed, who scored from inside his own half. Try as they might North Manchester could not get back into the game and Brushes finished the game with a measure of control. Adam Dale then rounded off a excellent performance by coolly slotting home to make it a 3-nil success.

The MSMFL Division One ~ Season Review Beechfield United led the way a the top of the First Division for all the season. Indeed the Salford based club were able to win nine out of their first ten games. Their only defeat in this period was a bizarre, high scoring, 7- 6 defeat at the hands of North Manchester FC - away at Maccabi Sports Club. Influential in Beechfield keeping ‘top spot’ was undoubtedly ‘Beechys’ ability to keep playing, without any postponements, on their 3G pitch at Salford Sports Village. Then, in January, after the opening ten league games. North Manchester were able to beat Beechfield in consecutive Steeles Shield and MEN Cup games where they were also able to restrict Beechfield from scoring. This dominance, in head to head games, continued at the beginning of February when ‘North’ went to Salford and defeated Beechfield 3 -2 in the league. The Achilles heel for North Manchester was that, whilst they have played to a high standard against the leaders, they dropped points to other contenders. Nevertheless they sat in second spot until the final month of the season. That’s because Beechfield United, good side that they are, picked themselves up and have won five out of six of the last league games, scoring twenty eight goals, with only four in reply. But, whilst this has been happening, Brushes Rangers Spartak and Manchester Medics made the late runs for honours for which the have both famed. Add to the mix a rejuvenated Torpedo Chorlton and the First Division has been highly competitive league, with a very good standard of football played throughout. On the penultimate league weekend Beechfield United, in their final game, travelled Dukinfield to defeat Brushes 3-1 to clinch the title. Brushes then left the door open for Manchester Medics to take the Runners-up spot. Congratulations Beechfield United – MSMFL League Champions! The MSMFL Division Three ~ Season Review The Third Division was affected by the withdrawal of three teams during the season leaving just seven teams to compete for honours. However this did not interfere with the skill and competitiveness with which the title was contended. The season began with five new teams joining five from the previous season. This gave the division an unknown element as to which would be the strongest teams. Early season results saw many teams taking points of each other. At the turn of the year, Cassidys could count themselves as favourites after an unbeaten run of League games. This advantage dissipated after the MSMFL mid-winter break and continual postponements during January and February. East Mancunia United were the next to hit the top spot in the division having benefited from having a 3G pitch in reserve at their East Manchester Academy venue. At this point the Eastlands outfit looked good candidates to win the league when, late in March, they beat Cassidys 3-0 away at William Hulme’s. However Alkrington Dynamos had games in hand on both their main rivals. The Dynamos then went on a winning league run throughout 2014. Indeed they were only beaten once before the break; that being a 4-3 reverse to East MancuniaUnited. Decisively they went on beat Cassidys 3-0 in mid March. That left East Mancunia needing to win their final league game of the season, which was away to Alkrington Dynamos. A win for EMU would have left the Dynamos needing to win their two remaining games to force a play off game between the two teams. The result was a 4-2 victory for Alkrington Dynamos who went on to become Division Three Champions the following week with 3-0 victory over Baguley Athletic. East Mancunia United took the Runners-up spot and also went on to win the Supplementary Shield Final with a 4-0 win over Second Division Hewlett FC.
