WELCOME to the PRESIDENT’S SHIELD FINAL Tonight is the first final of the Manchester Saturday Morning Fooball League 2013/14 season. The MSMFL is now in its twenty fifth season. It was formed in 1989 with the amagamation of the Manchester Education Football League and the Christian Fellowship Football League. The President’s Shield is the trophy played for by the MSMFL Third Division teams who compete in knockout competition. Tonights competing finalists are Cassidys FC and Alkrington Dynamos. The Cassidys Club is based in the Heaton Moor area Stockport. Many of he players are from local area with the squad supplemented by several players from South Manchester. The team plays its home games at William Hulme Grammar School in Fallowfield. Correspondingly Alkrington Dynamos are from the North of Manchester with their catchment area spreads across Middleton to Oldham. Recently they have played home games at Cardinal Langley High School Both clubs have had excellent seasons in the MSMFL. There is experience and youth in both camps. They may be at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of longevity, but both have the same philosophy with regard to giving local talent the opportunity to develop their football talents. Certainly they will both approach the final with skills, strong application and thoroughness. It should make for a good game! During April and May the West Didsbury and Chorlton AFC venue will host three further MSMFL Finals. Cassidys FC ~ Looking for Second Season Success! Cassidys FC were formed in 2012,and entered the MSMFL Division 3 for the 2012/13 season finishing a respectable 4th their first campaign. The club was established by Manager Jordan Taylor, Assistant and Treasurer Stephen Sumner together with former Stockport County Academy Star Jack Lynch. The three have a clear vision for the future of the club and this has enabled ‘the Greens’ to push on during their second season. They have been ably supported by generous and consistent local sponsors and a strong bond created with the local community. The squad itself has been built on a group of young technically skilled players, many of who have grown up together, giving the club a family feel and a bond that continues to grow. The centre back pairing of Jack Lynch and Ben Heron has been pivotal to the teams shape, The two have set a solid defensive standard to compliment a clear attacking nature. Midfielders Joe Wood & Club captain Declan Cahill have maintained they’re impressive displays from the first campaign. They have been helped by new signings such as Dom Goodhall and James Evans. In addition goals have come regularly from the three players up front. Forwards Danny Henry, Tommy Jackson and Ryan Jones are all pushing towards 20 goals for the season. This season has been one of twists and turns with Cassidys topping the table for the majority of the campaign until three clubs withdrawing from the league. This meant that three impressive victories (including two 12-0 wins) were expunged from the records. Indeed Cassidys were unbeaten in league fixtures up to March, also narrowly losing in the MEN Cup quarter finals. So the club has had plenty to celebrate and they hope a first trophy can be brought home tonight, to pave the way for future success. Cassidys have great respect for Division Three champions Alkrington. They have wished ‘the Dynamos’ good luck for the game and envisage both sides going all out for the victory.

President’s Shield Semi-Final: Cassidys 3 – Baguley Athletic 1 Cassidys had to move their President’s Shield Semi-final with Baguley Athletic to the home of Burnage Metro FC in Didsbury after their excellent home pitch at William Hulme’s became unavailable at short notice. With their ‘home’ preparations thrown awry, this meant the reality of the task at was for ‘the Greens’ to show an extra desire for victory. In a blistering start Tommy Jackson and Ryan Jones were unfortunate not to open the scoring. Cassidy’s then scored a brace in quick succession, with Tommy Jackson grabbing both goals. The opener was a six yard tap when he reacted to a good save by the Baguley ‘keeper. His second was smooth finish after latching on to a defence splitting through ball from skipper Declan Cahill. In the first forty-five special mention has to go to winger Jake Hartley who caused havoc down the left, bamboozling the Baguley full back, who was dragged off at half time. Baguley came out for the second half with greater determination to affect the game. Both sides created further chances and Cassidys could not grab a third goal to kill off they're opponents. The visitors then pulled a goal bac, and looked to set up a rip-roaring finish and take the tie to extra time. There hopes were dashed when their tormentor in chief Tommy Jackson slid in at the far post to score his and Cassidys third.

Cassidys ~ Player Profile Jordan Ashton Goalkeeper ~ A important signing towards the end of the campaign. He’s given the club some much needed solidity and conviction between the sticks. Ste McCrory Defender ~ The veteran of the side, who has had a fantastic Gaelic football career that he’s matched in the soccer code. A leader both on and off the field. Carl Greatbanks Full Back ~ A man of many positions; CGB has established himself as the clubs first choice right back after some impressive displays. Last season’s Managers player of the year. Tom Crean Defender ~ Big, Quick & Compact. Not played used as much as he would like this season but Creano is a part of the club who when given the opportunity will always shine. Jack Lynch Midfielder ~ An outstanding footballer who could play at a much higher level - but his blood runs Cassidys Green; a true club man. Dom Goodhall Midfielder ~ A late signing, has given us some much needed steel to the side. He’s added a few goals as well and will be big player for next season. Unpredictable but knows where the goal is, Barnsey has made most of his impact from the bench but is looking to break into the starting eleven. Jordan Taylor Manager ~ Has led the club with great conviction throughout its first two seasons. Credits the success of the Club and team as the mutual respect he has developed with the squad. Stephen Sumner Assistant Manager ~ The ‘Coach’ is instrumental in the running of the club. He’s the man the players lean on before, during and after games and makes Jordan’s job much easier.

MSMFL Division 3 ~ The Season's League Review The Third Division was affected by the withdrawal of three teams during the season which left only seven teams to compete for honours. However this did not interfere with the skill and competitiveness with which the title was contended. At the beginning of the season there were five new teams and five from the previous season. This gave the division an unknown element as to which were the strongest teams. Early season results saw teams taking points of each other. At the turn of the year, Cassidys could count themselves as favourites after an unbeaten run of League games up to Christmas. This advantage dissipated after the MSMFL mid-winter break and continual postponements during January and February. East Mancunia United were the next team to hit the top spot in the division having benefited from having a 3G pitch in reserve at their Academy venue. At this point the East Manchester outfit still looked good candidates to win the league when, late in March, they beat Cassidys 3-0 away at William Hulme’s. However Alkrington Dynamos had games in hand on both their main rivals. The Dynamos then went on a winning league run throughout 2014. Indeed they were only beaten once before the break; that being a 4-3 reverse to East MancuniaUnited. Decisively they went on beat Cassidys 3-0 in mid March. That left East Mancunia's needing to win their final league game of the season, which was away to Alkrington Dynamos. This would have left Alkrington needing to win their two remaining games to force a play off game between the two teams. The result was a 4-2 victory for the home team and Alkrington then went on clinch the league title the following week with 3-0 victory over Baguley Athletic.

MANCHESTER SATURDAY MORNING FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Alkrington Dynamos ~ Progress has been Near Perfect! Alkrington Dynamos FC was formed in 1991 primarily as a junior football club. Over the last 23 years the club progressed significantly in youth football. At present the club has four youth teams from under 10s to under 16s. However in recent years the club has maintained a First Team playing in adult football thus allowing youths to progress their football educations. Prior to this season the ‘Seniors’ played for several years in the Lancashire and Cheshire football League. Indeed they enjoyed much success and managed to make their way to the league’s First Division. However, at the end of the 2012/13 season, it was decided that the first team should search for a fresh challenge. Consequently the club applied to join the Manchester Saturday Morning Football League. They had clearly noticed other ‘junior outfits’ had progressed to play a very good standard of football, before lunch-time on first day of the weekend. Indeed clubs such as Beechfield United and Chadderton FC had taken their ‘Academy’ sides into the MSMFL and had both won top honours. A similar recognition had been made by other clubs such as Denton Youth and Medlock Rangers. No doubt Alkrington had also seen that other senior MSMFL clubs (notably AFC Middleton and Manchester Medics) had made creditable contributions to the Manchester FA Saturday Amateur Cup in recent seasons. If there was any trepidation in what Alkrington were joining, they didn’t show it. Their first season in this league has seen the Dynamos enjoy plenty of good football and they have easily fallen in with the ‘new’ Saturday morning kick offs. Alkrington Dynamos come to the President’s Final as Division 3 Champions having won the title on the previous weekend. They have won all but one game in their division – a narrow 4-3 reverse to eventual Runners-up - East Mancunia United. In the open Manchester Evening News Cup they beat a very good Torpedo Chorlton side 6-0 (the Chorlton side play in the final of their own division shield competition – the Steeles Shield, later in the month). They were eventually knocked out by Brushes Rangers Spartak 5-1, but Brushes have gone on to reach the final of the MSMFL prestige final in May. The Dynamos made their way to the President Final by beating East Mancunia United 3-1 in their final group game. They then went on to beat local rivals Church Inn in the Semi-Final. In a keenly fought game the Dynamos progressed to the final with a 3–0 victory

CHEADLE

The REFEREE Team Simon Holt is keen a student of the game. He played at youth level for AFC Partington from under 8’s to under 16’s. He now coashes and manages their 16’s team on Sundays. He also occasionally turns out in goal for Partington Peoples’ Church. At present, he is studying for a Mathematics Degree at Manchester University. He is a quiet, yet confident Referee, who talks to players throughout games. Simon was runner-up in last season’s Referee of the Year award and has maintained his high standards throughout the present season. Barry Murdoch is the Mike Malarky of the MSMFL. Has boots and will travel - but there is no truth in the rumour that he does this for free; he’s still too a young to qualify for his ‘bus-pass’. However he often needs toppin-up with IrnBru. Well respected by fellow Refs and Players alike, Barry took a mid-season sabbatical from ‘Reffing’ the league - but returned for the Semifinals. Once described as a ‘Smokin’ Linesman’; that’s because his reactions are ‘electric’. Albert Jassans is in his first season with the MSMFL and has been quickly recognised as the ‘Calm Catalan’ of the Referees team. That’s because he comes from Rues, in Tarragona province, Catalonia. Albert began Referee ‘back home’ at the age of 17 and progressed through youth football to good standard adult leagues. He has a Business Studies degree and came to England in 2011, when the economic down-turn hit Spain particularly badly. With employment scarce in Manchester, Albert has concentrated on learning another language (English not ‘Manc’) to help his job prospects, and got back into Refereeing in October 2012. As you might expect he is an avid Barca fan Premiership. Joe Fleming is the MSMFL Referees Secretary & stand-in fourth official this evening.
