Editorial & Welcome to… Atherton Collieries This evening we renew acquaintance with Atherton Collieries after the end to end opening game of the season which had everything apart from a West win. That sunny day back in August Colls were determined to get their first season back in the Premier Division off to a good start and for the first half they played some great stuff but just couldn’t hit the target. It then looked like they would pay the price when Ashley Woods put West 1-0 ahead with 6 minutes left after a much better second period from West. A minute later and it should have been 2-0 as Woods again went agonisingly close only for Colls to race up the other end and equalise. Not content with that Colls secured all 3 points from a corner deep into added time to leave West wondering what had just hit them. Since opening day Colls have consolidated their league position with some impressive results both home and away and last month they went through October as the second best form team in the division [West were 6th]. Both Colls and ourselves had a weekend off last Saturday as several premier division games fell victim to the incessant rain on Friday and Saturday so both teams will be raring to get going again tonight in a game which promises lots of entertainment if its anything like the last one. Tonight promises to be an intriguing LFA Challenge Cup tie between two form teams, with the incentive of a place in the quarter finals for the winners of tonight’s game. Looking back at West in the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy We have been competing in the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy since we were first elected to the North West Counties Football League in season 2012-13, but over the past 4 seasons have never had a home tie until this evening. Our first fixture was away at Evo Stik League side Bamber Bridge in autumn 2012 when we played the game after a couple of postponements due to a waterlogged pitch. When we eventually got round to the game itself we shocked the home side by taking a first half lead and by the interval it could have been 2-0. As the second half progressed we succumbed to the strength in depth of the arrivals off the bench of the home side and went down 2-1 in the end, having made a very favourable impression on those watching the game. The following season 2013-14, our interest ended away at Darwen in the first round when a team decimated by injuries and changes to give fringe players an outing was reduced to 10 men in the first half when the West reserve team keeper, Conrad Betton was shown a straight red card for what we all thought was a great save. Despite the sympathies of the home fans this was one to forget as Darwen racked up 6 without reply to end a damp and miserable evening in North Lancashire. Last season saw us win our opening game away at Colne in a 3-2 thriller. West raced into an early 2-0 lead through goals from Kieran Brocklehurst and Tre Baldwin Willis and that was how it stayed at half time. Colne then hit back and leveled the scores with two equally quick goals early in the second half but West came back strongly in the latter stages of the game and Brocklehurst burst through the middle to fire home the winner just before full time. The reward was another away trip this time trip to Ramsbottom United who were then flying high in the Evo Stik League. The West performance that evening was superb, creating chance after chance throughout the first 70 minutes but some poor finishing and bad decision making in the penalty area eventually resulted in Rammy scoring three without reply in the final five minutes. Another evening when our play won many plaudits from the home fans and club officials but some finishing touches of class proved the difference between the two teams. And so to this evening’s game with Atherton Collieries and the prospect of an interesting challenge in the next round for tonight’s winners with the possibility of an encounter with teams like Conference North teams AFC Fylde and Chorley, or Bamber Bridge, Chorley and Lancaster City from the Evo Stik North Division, assuming they all get through to the quarter finals. ENJOY THE GAME tonight, and have a safe journey home. Please take care and drive slowly on leaving the ground.

Steve Settle’s Notes Good evening and welcome to Brookburn Road for this evenings Lancashire Challenge Trophy 2nd round fixture against Atherton Colls. It’s a pleasure to be able to welcome Michael Clegg and his staff, players, officials, and fans for what promises to be an exciting game. After a great start to the season, characterised by already beating us on the opening day of the season, Colls will represent a tough challenge today and we will have to be at our best to get the right result for us. Since the Nelson home game, in which we cruised to a 3-0 win without getting out of 2nd gear we have suffered 3 defeats. In the Men United Cup against Eccleshall, at home to Morpeth in the Vase and against Northwich 1874 last Tuesday in the league. After arresting our early season form these 3 results prove that we still have lots of hard work to put in to get to where we want to be. The inconsistency that has characterised our last 2 seasons in the Premier league is an area for development that the whole management team are desperate to sort out. We know that if we have 8 or 9 at it then we will be a match for anyone in this league but the lads need to repay some of the faith that has been shown in them by improving their consistency. It’s important for us to get back to winning ways tonight. As I mentioned earlier Colls have had a great start to the season and, having watched them a few times this season, they play the game my type of way.

win their games in hand they will be in the top bunch. They look to attack with pace and quality and create chances to score goals. Having said that we are a totally different team to the one which shaped up on the opening day, if we are able to score tonight, we will equal our goal tally for the entirety of last season, some stat considering we are still in early November. On the injury front we have prognosis that Michael Simcock will probably miss the rest of the season requiring ACL surgery, Scott Jones is still a long term absentee and the full back curse is completed by Richmond Botchey awaiting a scan on his knee! We do however have Gaz Lilley nearing full fitness and Mark Rogers back from Uncle duties in Australia and both will be in contention for today’s game. In addition to this we are always looking to improve the squad and there may be 1 or 2 additions in the run up to Christmas. Enjoy the game and thanks for the support!

Setts

After playing us on the first day of the season, a game they won with 2 goals in injury time, I suggested they would be up there and if they

New for Christmas Our photographer, Graham Currey has come up with an offer from which the club will also benefit. He is happy to produce framed pictures of players. Examples of these are in the clubhouse, if anyone is interested in these or has a request for a particular picture to be taken, please discuss this with Graham or one of the programme team.

West 4 Morpeth Town 5…match report Wembley will wait another year for West as they lost a nine goal thriller with virtually the last kick of the game. West welcomed a Morpeth Town side to Brookburn Road who’d arrived fresh from a Friday night hotel stay in Stockport and were top of the Northern League after a 5-3 thrashing of Whitley Bay in mid-week, witnessed by manager Steve Settle. The visitors started the brighter of the two teams and West goalkeeper Hayden Buckley-Smith was called into action after just five minutes as he tipped a long range free kick over the bar. On 6 minutes West responded with their first chance of the game as Ben Steer burst down the right, pulled back a low cross to the waiting Ash Woods but his shot was easily held by the Morpeth goalkeeper. The game’s first goal came on 8 minutes as James Novak raced down the left and his cross into the box sailed over the head of BuckleySmith and crept inside the far post to give the visitors the lead. Morpeth almost made it 2-0 five minutes later when a corner reached Chiles unmarked at the near post and he crashed his header off the top of the crossbar. On 16 minutes Morpeth added their second as a long free kick was launched to the far post, headed down and kneed home by the waiting Jordan Fry inside the six yard box. West responded with chances of their own but a Scott Mason effort from 20 yards and a Lewis Schofield free kick from 25 yards out failed to force the Morpeth goalkeeper into a save. On 25 minutes it was 3-0 as a free kick was awarded inside the Morpeth half. The initial free kick was rocketed into the hand of Woods who despite having his back turned to the ball was adjudged to have deliberately handled it moving the free kick inside the West half. The second free kick was launched to the far post and headed home by Christopher Smailes off the underside of the crossbar to give the Northern League leaders a commanding lead. West still continued to create chances as Schofield hit the top of the crossbar directly from

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

a corner and should have had a penalty on 32 minutes when the Morpeth keeper pushed a Nic Evangelinos cross into the path of Woods who was hauled to the ground as he tried to shoot but the referee would only award a corner as the Morpeth goalkeeper pushed it around the post. From the corner, the cross reached the far post, it was knocked down to Steer whose flicked shot deflected onto the outside of the foot of the post. Morpeth continued to be dangerous on the break and a superb Callum Jones tackle on 34 minutes prevented a certain fourth when the Morpeth winger was through one-on-one. However West couldn’t prevent a fourth and from the corner it was again knocked down into the six yard box and after a scramble it was fired home by Chilton. Yet, West still continued to create and forced the Morpeth goalkeeper Niall Harrison into a brilliant save as Kay played a first time pass out wide to Steer whose cross found Woods waiting in the middle but could only see his diving header brilliantly blocked before Evangelinos was chopped down from behind as he attempted to finish the rebound. Sadly they couldn’t find the breakthrough before half time despite further chances from Woods, Steer and Jones. In one of the strangest turnarounds in football West came flying out of the blocks in the second half as they created a huge chance three minutes after the re-start as Woods skinned his man down the left pulled the ball back to Kay whose goal-bound shot was desperately blocked by a diving defender. West didn’t relent and two minutes later forced Harrison into another save as he could only palm away Woods shot. On 58 minutes Settle made a double change has he introduced Ricky Gleave and the returning Adam Hilton from Runcorn Linnets in place of Scott Mason and Ben Steer. It had almost an immediate impact as West struck back with a set piece of their own on 61 minutes when a Schofield free kicked was whipped into the penalty area and headed home by Kay with only the slightest flick on. Four minute later the deficit was reduced again as Kay flicked on a long ball to Ash Woods who coolly rounded the keeper and slotted home.

… Match report continued On 70 minutes an unlikely comeback took a step closer as Matty Kay scored a brilliant individual goal racing onto a pass inside the penalty area, turning his man on the goal line and firing in at the far post from the most narrowest of angles. Suddenly West were back in the game and hunting for a fourth and almost found it on 77 minutes when a cross to the far post found Evangelinos, his first touch took his marker out of the game but again Harrison made a world class save palming away a strong shot from almost point blank range. West continued to press as Morpeth were resorted to launching it long into the West half. The comeback was complete in the first minute of stoppage time as Ricky Gleave played a one-two with Evangelinos, beat his man before nutmegging the second, dragged the ball past the third man, raced past a fourth and placed his shot

coolly under the Morpeth keeper as the home bench and supporters went delirious. Suddenly the game became end-to-end as with extra time approaching both sides wanted a winner however it was the visitors who found it In the 95th minute as a cross from the right just evaded Schofield and Chilton brilliantly outjumped Eckersley at the far post and headed into the far corner to send Morpeth’s bench into raptures. There was almost no time to respond as the referee who’d awarded five additional minutes despite few stoppages alerted the players that there was just three seconds remaining and blew up as West re-started. Despite the heart-breaking nature of the loss West supporters remained to clap their players off the pitch in recognition of a performance of heart and desire against a team ranked amongst the favourites to win the entire competition.

1874 Northwich 1 West 0…match report West fell to a third straight defeat as they fell 1-0 to high flying 1874 Northwich on a miserable night in Winsford. Having exited the MEN United Cup and FA Vase to stoppage time winners in the previous two games West were looking to bounce back against a team whom they’d lost their previous four meetings at a ground where they’d lost in their previous six visits.

In the second half it was the home side who started the quicker out of the blocks and it was Buckley-Smith who made the first save of the half brilliantly blocking a close range shot with his feet by Matthew Beadle on 57 minutes. West responded a minute later as Woods had a 25 yard effort tipped just over the bar by Conkie after a quick break from Hayden’s initial save.

The West starting line-up was given a pre-match boost as Kelvin Lugsden, a defender who’d made more than 400 appearances for Glossop North End and was a focal point in their double winning side last season, made his debut in the West line up having arrived on dual registration on Friday. Lugsden replaced Scott Mason and Rick Gleave replaced Ben Steer as Steve Settle made two changes from the weekend although Adam Hilton was forced to miss the game due to a family emergency.

On 62 minutes West once again broke the 1874 offside trap as Gleave capitalised on a ball over the defenders shoulder but could only drag his shot wide from the edge of the penalty area. A minute later they were punished as 1874 won a free kick just inside their own half, it was launched into the box and Ryan Mitchell applied the finishing touch to give 1874 the lead.

West started the brighter of the two teams as they looked to attack on the counter and should have led after three minutes when Ash Woods raced down the right one-on-one but he hesitated and his low shot was saved by the feet of Matt Conkie in the 1874 goal. West went close again as Gleave clipped over a low cross at the near post from the resulting corner. On 24 minutes the first of the games major talking points occurred as Woods raced through one-one-one, rounded Conkie and was tripped. The referee pointed to the penalty spot but only brandished a yellow card to the 1874 goalkeeper and later stated that “Woods would have taken two seconds to chase the ball and a further second to turn and shoot” as to the reasoning as to why he’d not been denied a clear goalscoring opportunity. Sadly West failed to make 1874 pay for their mistake as Matty Kay cannoned his shot off the upper inside right of the post. It was a first half of few chances as conditions took their toll as the evening rain had reduce both sets of players to long passes with the only other shot on target in the first half coming on 40 minutes with Hayden Buckley-Smith saving a long range effort comfortably.

West continued to try and play their game and another long ball over the top released Woods but he could only fire his shot wide. Settle made changes as he replaced Nic Evangelinos with Ben Steer and Gleave with the returning Yahya Saeed. It almost had an instant impact as Steer latched onto a through pass but his shot was deflected wide for a corner. West continued to try and swing the game back in their favour but the home defence remained resolute as the conditions toughened with only sub Jonny Poizer testing the keeper with a tame shot at the near post but it was arguably the home side who looked the more likely to score again. The game’s final talking point came in stoppage time as Stuart Wellstead held the ball by the West corner flag. Lugsden, who’d played much of the game with a head injury and would require two stitches in hospital later that night, went to challenge the ball in the corner with Callum Jones but caught Wellstead on his ankle in an accidental collision. However the referee adjudged it differently and to the surprise of everyone in both green and blue gave Lugsden his match orders to end a miserable evening in Winsford and ruined what had been a very honest, competitive and evenly fought game.

Looking back our feature on Football History No 13 We all know about the exploits of the giants that are Manchester United and Manchester City. Across the country, and even the world, iconic places and people like Old Trafford, Maine Road, Bert Trautman and George Best are regularly spoken of with fondness and reverence. But Manchester has seen a great many more interesting pieces of footballing history. Here, we explore some of the lesser known aspects of Manchester's rich tapestry of football history.

Kevin Street For any team looking to have God on their side, Kevin Street is the man to have. The veteran midfielder has played for a raft of prestigious clubs, including Crewe Alexandra, Luton Town, Bristol Rovers, Shrewsbury Town and Altrincham, as well as having been manager of Nantwich Town. But Street isn't the archetypal foul-mouthed and hot-headed pro. In fact, he is rather more thoughtful and subdued as he stated in his early career that he didn't really want to be a footballer...in fact, he would much prefer to be a priest. Kevin actually achieved his dream in early 2005 whilst still turning out for Stafford Rangers, then in the Conference. Completing his studies, described in the press as "a degree in divinity", Street actually became a lay preacher, using his profession as a way of engaging with troubled youngsters. But Street hasn't let his religious occupation take him away from football. As of last year, he was still playing, turning out for Alsager.

Street is by no means football's only man of God. Famously, the Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Peter Knowles quit football to become a Jehova's Witness and ended up working in a shop and MLS player Chase Hilgenbrinck quit the game to become a Catholic Priest. There are a number of Christian footballers including Kaka, Kieron Richardson, Daniel Sturridge, Steven Pienaar, Radamel Falcao, David Luiz, and Edinson Cavani who have stated their faith by revealing messages on tee shirts after key incidents during or after games. And of course more recently Fabrice Muamba has spoken at many events about the miracle of God saving his life after his collapse on the pitch in the game against Tottenham Hotspur. It must be very useful to have a clergyman in the line up. Imagine the advantage you could gain through one of the lads having a quiet word in God's ear. Every shot would curl into the top corner, every pass would be pinpoint, every official's decision would be in our favour...the only time you'd lose is if you were playing a match against the Vatican National Team (and yes, that does really exist).

History of Atherton Collieries Atherton Collieries Football Club was established in 1916 by miners from the six pits which were then operative within the old urban district of Atherton. The football club became the latest part of an ever growing sports group that was organised by the Atherton Collieries Joint Association. Between 1919 and 1965 the club were winners of the Bolton Combination League ten times. Collieries established a noted reputation in Lancashire and by 1964-65 had won the Lancashire Junior Shield six times, a record which is still unsurpassed. They joined the North West Counties League as founder members in 1982, winning the third division in 1986-87. Steady progress off the pitch, with floodlights being erected in 1994, was matched by progress on the pitch as Colls final league position improved season on season. This culminated in promotion to the first division after finishing the 1995-96 season as runners-up to Vauxhall GM. Colls suffered mixed fortunes during their tenure in the NWCFL Premier Division. Their best season came in 2006-07 when they finished in seventh place under Phil Brown. This remains the highest position the club have ever finished in the English Pyramid. During 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons Anthony Pilkington made 35 appearances for the club scoring 19 goals. Three of these goals came in the away match at FC United which Collieries infamously won 3-0. This caught the attention of many local clubs and it was Stockport County who secured his services. The striker has since played for Huddersfield Town, Norwich City and the Republic of Ireland. The club were relegated from the Premier Division at the end of the 2008/09 campaign and Steve Pilling was appointed manager in August 2009. In 2010/11 the club won their first NWCFL silverware for decades when AFC Liverpool were beaten 3-2 (aet) in the First Division Trophy Final at Valley Road, Flixton. Season 2011/12 saw the club finish fourth in the First Division but another trophy was added to the honours board. The Bolton Hospital Cup was won for the first time in 25 years with a penalty shootout triumph over Eagley. The Reebok final had ended 2-2 with Gary Burnett scoring both Collieries goals as he put in a man of the match performance. Seasons 2012/13 and 2013/14 saw the team lead the NWCFL First Division in the early stages but fall away towards the end. Steve Pilling was a committed servant to the club and in his five seasons at the club the team finished in 6th, 5th, 4th, 4th and 5th position respectively.

Michael Clegg took over the managerial reins at the commencement of the 2014/15 campaign. He had previously enjoyed stints at near neighbours Pennington and Atherton LR. With the help of strong backroom support and local players he stated that he wanted to gain promotion with a side that would consist of Atherton based players. An opening day win at Cammell Laird, who went on to finish runners up, set high standards for the rest of the campaign. What followed was to be the club’s best season in their history. Promotion back to the NWCFL Premier Division was clinched with a memorable 3-0 victory at Atherton LR on Easter Monday. Five matches after this, Collieries travelled to Cheadle Town for a midweek match knowing that a win would see them mathematically win the league. The score was 1-1 going into the final few minutes when Luke Gibson scored to send a large away following into raptures. In the national cup competitions, Collieries were drawn against Evo-Stik Division One North side Radcliffe Borough for the second consecutive season. The sides drew 2-2 at Stainton Park to set up a replay at Alder House, which Collieries lost on penalties after extra time. The FA Vase saw Michael Clegg’s side comfortably beat Penistone Church 4-0, before knocking Premier Division side AFC Liverpool out of the competition with a 4-1 victory. A tough test arrived in the following round in the shape of Seaham Red Star and Colls lost 2-1. A proud moment for the club came when they reached the Lancashire Trophy Semi-Final which was staged at Leyland. Ashton Athletic, Radcliffe Borough and Ramsbottom United were all dispatched as Colls set up a tie with Clitheroe. Despite their best efforts, Colls couldn’t overcome a strong and experienced opposition and lost 2-0. The First Division Trophy saw Collieries beat Atherton LR in the First Round with a hard fought victory in testing conditions. Barnton and Litherland REMYCA were also seen off which took Clegg’s side into the final against AFC Darwen at Bootle. The Salmoners won 3-1 to break Colls hearts. A further final followed the next week. This time it was the Men United Cup. Having beaten Cheadle Town, Ashton Athletic, Abbey Hey, Colne and Runcorn Town the Colls came up against Premier Division champions and FA Vase finalists Glossop North End. Brad Cooke and Mark Battersby were sent off in the final and Collieries ultimately lost 2-0. A congested season, which saw Collieries play 15 matches in a month, ended on a high with an emphatic 7-2 victory over Turton in the Bolton Hospital Cup Final at The Macron.

Thank you

Chorlton for your support at our‌Community Bonfire Evening

Last Friday (6th November) the club held its annual bonfire night celebrations. The event was a great success as well over 500 people flooded through the Brookburn Road gates to enjoy the giant bonfire and impressive fireworks display. Refreshments were available throughout the evening, including seasonal fare such as mulled wine and parkin. Players and coaches from our new junior teams also set up a confectionery stand as a fundraiser. We were pleased to welcome our local MP Jeff Smith, Local Councillors from Newman and Strong from Chorlton, Midgley and Rawson from Chorlton Park, Ian Violet from Chorltonville owners committee and Dave Bishop from Friends of Chorlton Meadows as well as many of our first team players, but it was also great to see a large number of families and young people enjoying themselves on the night, and all in attendance were given a leaflet offering discounted entry to upcoming home games, so hopefully many of these will return to the club in the future. Not only was this event a greatly enjoyable night for the local community, but it was also a significant fundraiser for the club. Thanks go to all volunteers who helped to make this event the success that it was.
