Editorial & Welcome to…

Cammell Laird

Tonight we welcome Cammell Laird to The Recreation Ground for the first ever encounter between our two clubs, a little over a year after the reformed Cammell Laird progressed to the Premier Division after an excellent initial season in Division 1. Thus far they have established themselves as a solid mid table side and made everyone sit up and take notice a couple of weeks back when they inflicted the first league defeat of the season on leaders Colne, and that by an emphatic 4-0 margin. That came just a week after losing to Runcorn Linnets by the same score and in their last 2 outings Cammell Laird have lost by the odd goal, 3-4 at home last Tuesday to Atherton Collieries and then 1-2 away at Padiham last Saturday. There are certainly goals in this team with a lot of late strikes in the last 12-20 minutes of games so we’ll need to concentrate for 90 minutes tonight if we’re to maintain our own recently improved form. WHAT A WEEK! When we entertained Dinnington in the FA Vase 10 days ago little did we know what was about to unfold. Not only did the club set a new record for a win in the FA Vase but also recorded the highest ever margin of victory for a NWCFL club and smashed our own club record score in the process. The media exposure since had been incredible with Steve Settle being interviewed twice, once on the BBC 5 Live Non League Show and again last Friday on BBC Radio Manchester. The Non League paper carried its own headline and feature and last Friday’s Manchester Evening News had a full page spread complete with a colour photo for the club scrapbook. However, keeping our feet on the ground has been more important and the management team deserve credit for doing just that and making sure that we develop consistency through our improved form which was kick started with that thumping 5-1 win against Padiham at the end of September. In the last 2 games against Alsager and Abbey Hey, we didn’t get rattled when we conceded and the end result of gaining maximum points from those two tough games has seen us jump 6 places up the table in a week. However, as we’ve played more games than most, it is even more important to maintain momentum over the coming weeks, keep adding to our points total and not get ahead of ourselves. Tonight is a case in point as we know Cammell Laird are a good side who have adjusted well following promotion to the Premier Division and who currently sit 3 points above us. This is another vital game where we need to get a result before next weekend and another test with a long trip to Blackpool to take on Squires Gate who are looking for points to get away from trouble. HARDY FARM FACILITIES ARE OFFICIALLY OPEN Our new grass playing fields at Hardy Farm were officially opened last Saturday lunchtime by Jeff Smith, our local MP, at a ceremony attended by many parents and children from our new junior section, our local Councilors for Chorlton and Chorlton Park wards, and Dave Bishop and Ian Violet from the Friends of Chorlton Meadows. Glyn Meacher thanked all those who had provided grants and otherwise contributed to enabling the new facilities and the Friends who had worked closely with the club and Betel of Britain in developing an overall management plan for the wider area. Jeff Smith congratulated the club on all its hard work and expressed his pleasure in being able to open new facilities which will greatly enhance junior football locally. (Pictures from last Saturday are in the programme). THANK YOU Thank you all for supporting the game this evening and we wish everyone a safe return journey home. WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

Steve Settle’s Notes Good evening and welcome to Brookburn Road for this evenings NWCFL fixture against Cammell Laird. We hope that their officials, players and fans enjoy our hospitality and, after today of course, we wish them well for the rest of the season. Tonights game promises to be another tough one for the lads, Laird are currently 11th in the league, 3 points ahead of us and I’m sure tonight will be very competitive. It’s been a pretty surreal week! Last Saturdays FA Vase result saw us gain national media attention alongside breaking North West Counties League and FA Vase records for biggest win. I had watched Dinnington play prior to our game and I jokingly said to Rob McKay on the way home that we should win by 10! Without being disrespectful to Dinnington we were just way too good for them. To win 151 surpassed my expectations. It would have been easy for the boys to take their foot off the gas and do things that they wouldn’t ordinarily do but credit to them we continued to move the ball quickly and truth be told we could have scored a few more. I’ve been saying for a while that I wanted us to be more clinical in front of goal and to have 10 different goal scorers was very pleasing. On Saturday night it was a little surreal to be interviewed on BBC Radio 5Live but the result has generated some excellent coverage for our club. To back up the Dinnington performance in a big game against Alsager on Tuesday was particularly pleasing. Barring a ridiculous refereeing decision, over ruling a linesman from 40 yards away, we would have won the game far more comfortably. Having said that to be pegged back to 3-3, we showed tremendous confidence, character and ability to win the game in the last minute. It’s amazing what a little bit of confidence can do for a team. Saturdays game against Abbey Hey was arguably our best performance of the

season so far and without doubt the most clinical. To go there and win 5-1 was exceptional, particularly after going 1-0 down. From 30 minutes to the end of the game we were outstanding and again, could have had 1 or 2 more. Everybody contributed which is best characterised by Hayden. After being a virtual spectator his penalty save at 3-1 was a crucial moment in the game. Having Mark Rogers, Matt Eck and Pottsy on the pitch at the same time ensures that we are more solid. Nic the Greek has had an immediate impact contributing with 5 goals in 3 games and Ash Woods has found his scoring boots. In addition to that we have a bench that can change games, Ben’s goal on Saturday was a brilliant finish and he is looking really sharp again now following his injury! I have told the lads to reassess their expectations of themselves and each other on the back of the last 3 games. If we can win the next 2 games we will be in the top 10 which I think better represents the performances and the ability of our team. The next round of the Vase has thrown us a tough tie against Morpeth Town of the Northern League. It’s a strong league with 5 of the last 6 Vase winners in it, as it stands Morpeth have had a great start and are near the top of the league. That being said I firmly believe that on our day we are a match for anyone at this level so we are really looking forward to it! Enjoy the game and thanks for the support!

West 4 Alsager Town 3 ‌match report Having seemingly thrown the game away West secured a league double over bottom club Alsager Town thanks to a 90th minute Anthony Potts winner with the virtual last kick of the game. After a stunning victory at the weekend the FA Vase which garnered national attention West returned to the bread and butter of the league with West manager Steve Settle naming an unchanged squad for the first time in his tenure. Kick off was delayed 10 minutes due to the late arrival of the visiting team but despite the delay West were out of the blocks quickly pressing Alsager up the pitch with the trio of Matty Kay, Nic Evangelinos and Matty Kay looking to add to their weekend tally of goals. However it was Alsager who created the games first opening as a low cross from the right was flicked on at the near post and Hayden BuckleySmith was forced to make a smart save low to his right. West responded immediately as the forward trio combined to play in Woods who broke through on goal with his goal bound effort deflected wide for a corner. West broke the deadlock on 6 minutes when Evanglelinos was tipped in the penalty area by Adam Dawson. Matty Kay took the ball and dispatched inside the right post sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to the delight of the West supporters seeking shelter in the stand behind the goal. Immediately it was almost two as Evangelinos was tripped again at the edge of the penalty area, as the wet conditions forced players to slide into tackles, however Kay curled his free kick just over the bar. Evangelinos continued to threaten on the right and brilliantly robbed the Alsager full back of the ball inside the penalty area but could only poke his shot wide. On 18 minutes Alsager were level as West won a throw on the left hand side but the referee overruled the linesman with the Alsager player snatching the ball out of Richmond Botchey's hands racing 15 yards down the touchline from where the throw was originally taken, the cross/shot was only parried by Buckley-Smith into the path of Chris Smith who tapped it into an empty net. West didn't relent and almost responded from the kick off as Evangelinos again robbed the Alsager full back and managed to poke it under the onrushing Alsager goalkeeper Burzynsji but the right back Wooley made up a great clearance off the line. It continued to be all West as a deep cross into the box found Woods at the far post, he unselfishly headed the ball back across to Evangelinos whose shot struck

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

the outside of the post. Kay and Steve Settle would both fire chances wide but West had to settle for a 1-1 draw at half time. The second half continued in the same manner as the first half concluded with West on the front foot pressing for a second goal with Mark Rogers first firing a long range effort just over the bar. West went close again as a quality cross from Evangelinos on the right found Woods at the far post, his header beat the keeper but rebounds off the bar and the follow up was headed just over by Kay. Evangelinos himself fired over, beating two when cutting in from the right but his drilled just cleared the bar. At the other end Alsager had arguably the best chance of the half to that point as they won possession back deep in West's half with the ball reaching the far post and Buckley-Smith making a great point blank save with the rebound being blazed over from 6 yards out. Alsager grew further into the game but it was West who scored on 73 minutes as a good passing West move down the left saw the ball fall to Woods at the edge of the penalty area and he made no mistake drilling it into the bottom right hand corner. Steve Brockley replaced Lewis Schofield with Jamie Wolden and he had an immediate impact as Alsager won a corner when they believed they should have had a penalty for handball (too far away to judge) and from the corner West broke down the left with Wolden running 60 yards crossing the ball to Settle on the right wing. Settle kept the ball alive and drove a low cross to Evangelinos who finished brilliantly first time under the goalkeeper. Match won... ...or so West thought. Two minutes later a very deep cross from the right hand side found Liam Shaw at the far post, his header clipped the inside of the top left hand corner of the post, rolled along the line and went in off the inside of the right hand post with just 6 minutes remaining. From the kick off it was 3-3 as Harry Clayton's shot was fired into the bottom left hand corner to seal an unlikely comeback for Alsager. It was looking like two points dropped at home for West but they continued press in search of a winner, forcing a string of corners. In the 90th minute it paid off as the cross was whipped inwards to the near post and Potts rose to meet it burying inside the near post to send the West supporters into eruptions. With three minutes of stoppage time both sides had chances to score again but West secured three vital points to take their form to five wins in the last eight games.

Abbey Hey 1 West 5 ‌match report West made it three wins in a week as they came from a goal down to blitz five past Abbey Hey in East Manchester. Manager Steve Settle was forced into two changes from the side that won 43 at home to Alsager Town in mid-week as both he and Lewis Schofield missed out through injury with Callum Jones returning to the starting line up at right back whilst he handed teenager Yaya Saeed his first team debut. The opening 10 minutes of the game were tight with neither side able to create much in the way of clear cut openings and it took until 14 minutes for the first chance when Abbey Hey's Ashford Blake brought down a cross inside the penalty area with an excellent first touch but could only force his shot over the bar. West's first chance came on 24 minutes when a worked free kick from deep was played along the ground to Nic Evangelinos on the right, his touch turned his marker and he forced a good save from the Abbey Hey goalkeeper Dominic Kurasik at his near post. The first goal came a minute later as a long ball evaded Callum Jones allowing the Abbey Hey left winger in down the left hand side, his pass reached the far post where the cross was knocked by across goal by Blake allowing Steven Yarwood to finish from inside the six yard box to give Abbey Hey the lead on 25 minutes. From there it would get worse for West as moments later Richmond Botchey was forced to come off due to a groin strain to be replaced by Dan Russell with Saeed moving to left back as West re-shuffled. Having now been forced to chase the game West stepped up a gear and looked the more likely team to get the next goal but it still required a moment of individual brilliance to make it 1-1 on 35 minutes. Lee Gavin made a superb diving tackle in the middle of the park to win back possession, Jones picked up the loose ball and played in Ash Woods with a good through pass, Woods drove into the box holding off his man before firing a shot into the top left hand corner from a narrow angle. Suddenly West were on top and Matt Eckersley played in Nic Evangelinos with a brilliant cross field pass who forced the keeper into a low save to his right with a shot from the edge of the penalty area. Moments later a great move from West with Gavin, Jones and Evangelinos combining released Matty Kay into the box but he was only denied by a great block from the Abbey Hey goalkeeper. Half time came too soon for

www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

West as the referee blew with them on the attack. The second half began in the same manner as the first half ended as West continued to create with Evangelinos volleying over a difficult chance from a West free kick. Hayden Buckley-Smith was called into action at the other end as he made a terrific block at the far post from Justin Pickering. West got the vital second goal on 53 minutes when a great through pass from Kay found Woods and he slotted first time into the bottom left hand corner. Immediately it was almost three as West had a goal disallowed when a ball was played deep through to Gavin who chested it down and finished but the offside flag was up for a very tight decision. Abbey Hey hit back and Buckley-Smith was again called into action to make another good block. On 64 minutes West went close again as a free kick into the box evaded everyone except Anthony Potts at the far post whose diving header forced a great save from Kurasik. From the corner Potts made it three as he buried the flick on from the inswinging corner. The big turning point in the game came on 72 minutes as Abbey Hey were awarded a penalty for a trip by Potts. However Abbey Hey were denied when Buckley-Smith saved brilliantly palming a high shot away that was slightly behind him; he followed it up by catching the resulting corner. On 78 minutes West put the game beyond doubt as Mark Rogers won the ball in midfield and played a brilliant pass to Evangelinos who volleyed it into the top left hand corner. Evangelinos fifth goal in three games since returning to West. Settle rang the changes replacing the impressive Woods and Evangelinos (who was injured in the goal) with Jamie Wolden and Ben Steer. Steer was into the action immediately volleying just wide after a great ball over the top from Eckersley. With just two minutes remaining the two combined again for the fifth as Eckersley won the ball deep in his own half, beat this man and played a wonderful pass over the top to Steer who made no mistake and volleyed it into the top corner first time. A goal of the season contender. The goal capped off an impressive win against an in-form Abbey Hey side giving West their fourth win in the last five scoring 29 goals in the process.

Looking back our new feature on Football History No 10 We all know about the exploits of the giants that are Manchester United and Manchester City. Across the country, and even the world, iconic places and people like Old Trafford, Maine Road, Bert Trautman and George Best are regularly spoken of with fondness and reverence. But Manchester has seen a great many more interesting pieces of footballing history. Here, we explore some of the lesser known aspects of Manchester's rich tapestry of football history.

Gareth Strange Some weeks ago, we looked at the tale of Peter Coyne, the promising Manchester United striker who gave it all up to become a fishmonger. But Coyne is not the only red devil to have forsaken the most famous club on earth for another profession, as demonstrated by Gareth Strange, a man who well and truly lived up to his name. In 1999, Strange had the world at his feet, having just signed a 2 year professional contract with United. Sharing a dressing room with England internationals like Joe Cole and playing in matches against the likes of Djibril Cisse, the Bolton born teenager's career seemed to go from strength to strength. But in 2001 things started to fall apart. Strange's contract was not renewed and, even worse, he failed to sign a deal with any of the professional clubs he trialed with. Drifting into non league, he became renowned as a tough tackling midfielder.

But a torn meniscus put an end to Strange's playing career and in his midtwenties he retired from football completely, falling back onto his career as a joiner. It was five years later that Strange found his new calling, as he began training for MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) in his local gym and found he had a talent for it, as well as enjoying the feeling of competitiveness it gave him. Now training for 3 hours a day, 4 times a week, Strange says his fitness levels are higher than they have ever been, including when he was at United. At only 5'9, the former football starlet does well to compete as a professional cage fighter, a sport involving far more agression than football (except, of course, in the case of Vinnie Jones).

Visiting West tonight ‌ Cammell Laird 1907 Cammell Laird 1907 FC can trace its history back to 1899 when a team from the Upper Boilers Shop of Laird Bros played in Birkenhead Park, before turning to the rugby code. It was not until June 1907 that the Cammell Laird Institute AFC was established, with its first fixture taking place on 2nd September 1907 against Tranmere Rovers, finishing 9th in the West Cheshire League in their inaugural season (1907/08). In the early years the club played at a number of grounds and won their first trophy (the Shipley Cup) in April 1921, before in the summer of 1922 they moved to St Peters Road (which still remains their current home) as Kirklands FC. They disbanded in 1939 but reformed in 1946. The club had their most successful period during the 1970s and 80s winning the West Cheshire League on a regular basis. 1994/95 saw the club reach the FA Vase quarter final before losing to Arlesey Town. The early part of the new millennium saw the club reach new heights. They started the rise through the pyramid, making history by becoming the first club to win the championship of the Second and First Divisions of the North West Counties League, which they achieved in 2004/05 .

and then 2005/06. In the same year as that First Division triumph, the club reached the FA Vase semi-final (losing to eventual winners Nantwich Town) and two years later, the club gained promotion to the Unibond Premier League. However, they were relegated after just one season due to ground grading. Having fought relegation battles successfully, the club finished bottom of the Evo Stik Division One North in 2011/12, but were reprieved, and bounced back the following season by finishing league runners up before losing on penalties in the play-off final against Trafford. Season 2013/14 saw the club finish 11th but the decision was taken by the club to resign from the Evo Stik NPL due to ownership issues and form a new club: Cammell Laird 1907 FC. The new club was formed on 28th May 2014 and entered the NWCFL Division One. In October, the club lost manager Tony Sullivan to Witton Albion, and appointed Paul McNally in the same month. He ably guided the team to promotion, which was achieved on Saturday 4th April. In the end, Lairds finished 21 points clear of 3rd placed AFC Darwen

Hardy Farm new pitches opened last Saturday Jeff Smith, MP for Manchester, Withington, officially opened West Didsbury and Chorlton AFC’s new £66,263 real grass pitches at Hardy Farm, Chorlton on Saturday 10 October 2015, thanks to a £43,263 grant from the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund, which provides grants towards developing new or refurbished grassroots football facilities. The grant has enabled the club to provide four new pitches for sides from Under-8 to Under16 along with a new full-size pitch for the club’s Under-18 youth team and adult ‘A’ team. These real grass pitches will bring activity to an area that was previously home to nothing more than overgrown playing fields. The club worked in partnership with Lancashire

FA to secure the grant from the Premier League & the FA Facilities Fund. Founded in 2000 the Football Foundation is the largest sports charity in the UK funded by the Premier League, The FA and Government, via Sport England. It funds the development of new and refurbished grassroots sports facilities in order to improve the quality and experience of playing sport at the grassroots level. Since it was launched in 2000, the Foundation has awarded around 13,000 grants worth more than £530m towards improving grassroots sport, which it has used to attract additional partnership funding of over £740m – over £1.3bn of investment into the grassroots game.
