Dinnington Town
A warm welcome to today’s FA Vase game against Dinnington Town who visit us today for the first competitive game between our two clubs. The players, management and supporters of Dinnington are most welcome today and we trust they enjoy their visit and our hospitality and have a safe trip home after the game. Dinnington is near Worksop and the club was reformed last season having dropped back down to the Central Midlands Football League [CMFL] from the Northern Counties East League, where the club had enjoyed a 5 year spell between 2005-6 and 2010-11 seasons. Dinnington Town was formed in 2000, joining the CMFL Premier Division and in 2001-02 they finished third and were promoted to the Supreme Division. They won the CMFL League Cup in 2002–03 and finished as league runners-up in 2003–04 and 2004–05. After a third consecutive second-place finish in 2005–06 they were promoted to Division One of the Northern Counties East League. In 2007–08 they reached the 3rd Qualifying Round in their debut FA Cup campaign, and won promotion to the NCEL Premier Division after winning the Division One title. After winning the League Cup in 2009–10, they were relegated back to Division One at the end of the 2010–11 season. They suffered vandalism and financial problems after a decade of success from 2000 onwards and close to the end of 2013-14 they resigned from the NCE League rejoining the CMFL North Division [Step 7] for the 2014-15 season. This is their second season back in the CMFL North Division and they are having a poor run of form at present. However, this is the first FA Vase game for the reformed club and, as we know, anything can happen in football and especially in a cup tie. We will need to be focused and keep our concentration throughout if we are to reach the level we know we can play at and progress to the next round. The FA Vase is a competition we want to do well in as it helps raise the club’s profile, not to mention the prospect of some prize money if we succeed today. It is also a chance to quickly forget last week’s home defeat against a determined Runcorn Linnets team, who are one of the favourites for promotion and we all know they will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season. However, we pushed them all the way in the first half and the 45th minute opening goal was very harsh on us although Runcorn had more of the game. The second was an unstoppable free kick but despite that we looked to have got back in the game when Ash Woods headed home from a free kick. Instead of 2-1 the score became 3-0 as Runcorn promptly went up the other end and an unfortunate error settled the game on the hour mark. NOTE: If there is replay of today’s game this will take place at Dinnington next Wednesday evening at 7.45pm. Steve Settle’s Notes Good afternoon and welcome to Brookburn Road for this FA Vase 2nd Qualifying Round tie against Dinnington Town FC. We wish their staff, players and supporters the warmest of welcomes and hope that, after today, they have an enjoyable and successful season. Dinnington are based south of Sheffield and play in the Central Midlands League North division. They have had a difficult start to the season but I popped across the Pennines to have a look at them last Wednesday and they were unlucky to lose the game. I’m sure they will be looking for a good cup run to kick start their season and our lads know that they will have to be at their best to progress. We ourselves are looking for a run in the Vase to help us find some consistency of performance. The Padiham display alongside the 2nd half against Northwich showed that we are capable when we play on the front foot in an attacking fashion. Unfortunately we are a little immature, in a footballing context, when things don’t go for us which prevents us from staying in games by being solid and not conceding silly goals. This game marks the start of a big month for us that will really define our season. Following today’s game we have 5 league games, 3 at home, that are all winnable and the month ends with our first tie in the league cup, a home tie against Eccleshall, another competition we want to do well in. It is important that we gain 11+ points in October which will allow us to climb the table and would represent some consistency that has been missing thus far. Admittedly it is hard to find consistency when we are not able to put the same team out week in and week out. I’ve been involved in football long enough to understand that it is a squad game and injuries and suspensions are inevitable.
This season however seems to have been worse than I’ve ever experienced. Prior to the Ashton Athletic game we had 6 defenders missing which requires us calling depth we simply don’t have! I’m confident that when we have our 1st choice 16 available, we will be a match for anyone in this league and as such the FA Vase gives us the opportunity to prove this. It will be great to get Matt Eckersley back from suspension this weekend. He has performed exceptionally well thus far this season, arguably our best player since moving to centre half and in him Pottsy and Mark Rogers we have 3 centre halves that will provide solidity for us. It’s also great to have Nic Evangelinos back with us. Nic has trained well this week and will be in contention to play today after a good week of training. Thanks for your support and enjoy the game.

West 0 Runcorn Linnets 3 …match report West slumped to their fifth home league defeat of the season at the hands of last season’s runners up Runcorn Linnets. West manager Steve Settle was still without Anthony Potts and Matt Eckersley, the latter through suspension whilst Sam Dee broke down in the warm up. However he was able to name an unchanged front line as Ash Woods, Matty Kay and Lewis Schofield continued up front. West were the brighter of the two team in the opening 10 minutes and almost took a freak lead when Woods dribbled past four players, his mis-control reached the Linnets goalkeeper whose clearance hit Jordan Poole straight in the chest but deflected just wide. Linnets created themselves a good opening but the shot was curled into the Rob Turley Stand from the edge of the penalty area. On 19 minutes West had a good chance from a corner as the keeper palmed the initial cross away from goal, the clearance fell to a West player however the initial shot was blocked and Mark Rogers could only fire the third attempt over. Six minutes later West had a decent chance from a free kick when Woods was tripped from behind at the edge of the penalty area but the free kick was blasted over the bar. At the other end Hayden Buckley-Smith in the West goal made a smart save from his near post from a Linnets corner. The first goal came just four minutes before half time with the first real moment of quality in the game by either side as a Franny Smith pass on the counter attack played in Kyle Hamid who raced onto the pass and finished well underneath the goalkeeper from the edge of the penalty area.

The second half was barely five minutes old when Linnets were awarded a free kick at the edge of the West penalty for an alleged trip. Hamid stepped up and fired a shot into the top right hand corner past Buckley-Smith to give Linnets a two goal lead. Linnets almost immediately made it three but Buckley-Smith saved well when one-on-one. West’s first chance of the half was arguably their best move of the game as they strung a good passing move together allowing Woods, with his back to goal, to lay the ball off to Russell who failed to strike the ball cleanly but it struck the base of the outside of the left hand post. Head Coach Steve Brockley rang the changes, three of them to be precise as Ben Steer, Jonny Poizer and Jamie Wolden replaced Poole, Schofield and Russell. It had an immediate impact as a Ben Steer throw into the box was headed home by Woods from 6 yards out but was ruled out. From the free kick it was game over as Settle under hit his header back to the keeper and Franny Smith coolly lifted his shot over the helpless Buckley-Smith. West continued to press and Woods had another header from a throw in tipped onto the bar by the Linnets goalkeeper before having a corner cleared off the line with Wolden firing over the follow up. West were able to call upon a bit of luck in the final minutes as BuckleySmith was only shown a yellow card for handling outside the penalty area. However West were left to ponder a sub-par performance as they were punished by three moments of real quality from Runcorn Linnets.

Looking back our new feature on Football History No 8 We all know about the exploits of the giants that are Manchester United and Manchester City. Across the country, and even the world, iconic places and people like Old Trafford, Maine Road, Bert Trautman and George Best are regularly spoken of with fondness and reverence. But Manchester has seen a great many more interesting pieces of footballing history. Here, we explore some of the lesser known aspects of Manchester's rich tapestry of football history.
‘Little’ Joe Richardson "Little" Joe Richardson is unknown to most, but he is possibly one of the most unusual players ever to grace the North West’s football scene. He was, as his nickname suggests, a diminutive player. A pacey forward who turned out for Rochdale in the 1960s, his most memorable moment on the field came in the 1962 League Cup semi-final when he scored a brace for the Dale in a 31 victory over Blackburn Rovers, and for that he wrote himself into club folklore. However, details of Richardson's football career remain vague, but it is his life outside football that he is most remembered for. Looking for ways to supplement his meagre income as a lower league player, the mysterious Richardson took to the streets of Liverpool in his van, becoming a dastardly and prolific kidnapper. But the target of Richardson's nefarious crime-sprees was not people. In fact, the bow-legged forward was hunting for dogs; the biggest, most vicious looking dogs he
could find, particularly Alsatians. The reason for this bizarre activity was that he had a lucrative business in selling "trained guard dogs" to the unsuspecting security companies of Merseyside, with each mutt going for around £5 each, Little Joe was apparently never caught out, and the business remained lucrative for years. It can well be imagined that some of Richardson's abducted "guard dogs" may have been perfectly friendly, and happily rolled over for any intruders or criminals they came across. But karma seemed to catch up with Richardson in later life, as he retired from football in the late 1960's before eventually being killed by alcohol. Did he drink himself to death, you ask? No. In fact, whilst working as a drayman for Highson's Brewery he was crushed to death by an out of control beer barrel which had fallen off a cart. You have to wonder whether anyone drank the beer afterwards...

Visiting West today… Dinnington Town DINNINGTON MAIN (1908-1914) entered in the Hatchard Cup League when founded in 1908. This started as a cup competition but as it developed over the years it moved towards what we now know as a league formation. DINNINGTON COLLIERY (1914-1919) entered in the wartime Wharncliffe Charity League. This league was established due to the shortage of teams allowed entries from minor leagues up to the standard of the Football League. During this wartime period the club won the Hatchard Cup and Aston Charity Cup on two or three occasions. DINNINGTON MAIN COLLIERY (1919-1928) rejoined the Hatchard League in 1919 and in 1921 made their first entry into the FA Cup where they lost 4-3 to Silverwood Colliery after extra time. In 1921 the club were promoted to the Sheffield Association League. DINNINGTON ATHLETIC (1928-1976) continued playing in the Sheffield Association League when the team was formed in 1928 which saw the start of a golden era for the club. In 1932 the club won the prestigious Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup beating South Kirkby Colliery 3-0 in the final replay at Mexborough. This success enabled qualification for the FA Cup again the following season when Athletic beat Bentley Colliery and Silverwood Colliery by the same 3-1 margin before losing to Rawmarsh Welfare in the next round. However it was the 1934-35 season which saw the club finally reach the first round proper of the FA Cup for the first time, having valiantly tried for many years.
Local football history was made when in the final qualifying round replay, a crowd of 2,800 saw Athletic beat South Bank 1-0. The club was rewarded entry into the Yorkshire League in 1936-1937 and stayed there for many years, their high point coming when winning the Second Division title in 1969-1970. A season which also saw the club again reach the final of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup, only to lose 2-1 to Worksop Town at Kiveton's Hard Lane ground. DINNINGTON COLLIERY (1976-1985) joined and played in the Midland League. As the mining industry declined so did the club's fortunes and in 1985 the club folded. DINNINGTON TOWN (2000-2014) for the first time in its history the club would be known as ‘Dinnington Town’, beginning footballing life again in the Central Midlands League. The ground facilities prevented promotion for a few seasons but didn’t stop winning ways, including 2 League Cups in 2002/3 & 2005/6. the latter season also seeing the club gain promotion to the Northern Counties East League. In 2007-8 with the NECL Division 1 League Title came promotion to the NECL Premier Division, its highest ever status in league football and also a run in the FA Cup proper to the 3rd qualifying round. Another League Cup win in 2009-10 was the last honour as Dinnington Town and following relegation to NECL Div 1 and financial implications becoming too great the club withdrew from the NECL at the end on 2013-14. DINNINGTON TOWN 2014 Reformed with a new management team born from the substantial junior section of the club Dinnington Town has re entered the Central Midlands Football League. Alcohol may be purchased and consumed in the bar area only. Children are not allowed in the Club House unless accompanied by an adult. Encroachment onto the playing area is forbidden at all times. Standing is not allowed in front of the seated areas. All forms of transport on the clubs car park is at the owners’ risk.

COME ON ‘SEST DISBREY’!!! I now live in Massachusetts, USA and whilst back on a visit to England in March 2015 I was staying with my son, who lives in the local area and volunteers at the club. On a cold Saturday afternoon and for the want of something better to do, I decided to accompany him to the match, mainly to see where he went and to show an interest. I wasn’t really expecting to enjoy it and I think I took a book just in case I got bored! However, what a pleasant surprise I had when I arrived at West Didsbury and Chorlton Football Club. We had a lovely walk to the ground and the atmosphere and people there were great. Although I hadn't even known that there was a team in Didsbury, I enjoyed watching the game - and also watching the spectators! It was so nice to see a number of dads stood together in a group with their young children in pushchairs, and I was surprised to see the healthy away support from Colne, who were the opposition that day.

At the last match I went to, I was amused to hear a small four year old boy shouting loudly ‘Come on Sest Disbrey’ I saw men with their girlfriends and wives, supporters who had brought their dogs along, groups of lads together cheering the players on and avid football supporters on the front line shouting their instructions and showing support throughout the match. At halftime I got great refreshments and snacks from the clubhouse where the staff and everyone in there were really friendly. I have been to the ground on my past two visits home now, once in March and again on my last trip in September, when West Didsbury beat Padiham 5-1. Perhaps I am a lucky charm?! I will definitely be attending matches on all my future trips to the UK.
