Y R U B S D I D WEST& CHORLTON AFC

WELCOME TO

May I extend a warm welcome to all our guests and particularly to the players, officials and fans of Radcliffe Borough and Ashton Athletic who will provide us with stiff opposition as another curtain raiser to the new season. This summer has seen significant changes at our club, but firstly I would like to express our grateful thanks to Danny Iredale our First Team Manger for the last few years for all his work and enthusiasm. Danny has recently left us to travel the world! I am however delighted to welcome a new management team to our club. Andy Nelson who has a wealth of experience playing professionally and managing in the Conference joins us as Director of Football and First Team Manager. The new Second Team Manager needs no introduction, as Jem Hines has been involved with us for many years as a player and more latterly supporting the management team. We have also strengthened the coaching side with John Squires the Club Coach now joined by Steve Eckersley and Phil Southall. To support these exciting developments we have also strengthened our Committee. Everything augurs well for a great season on and off the pitch building on last year which was one of the most successful our first team have enjoyed, finishing joint third in the Manchester League 1st Division and reaching the Murray Shield Final. Finally, I would like to thank all who helped our club win two Fair Play Awards and the Albert Booth Sportsmanship Trophy last year. We aim to build on that success and hopefully prove that you can be successful by playing the right way and in the right manner. We hope you enjoy today and the refreshments in the clubhouse after the game. Brian Cripps Chairman

FROM THE

T U O G U D

LSON

WITH ANDY NE

We are pleased to welcome Andy to West Didsbury this year, we have asked Andy to explain how he came to join us. I first met Rob Turley and Brian some years ago when they discussed their future vision, aims and objectives for the club. I have always been impressed with the way the club is structured and has developed over the years, however at the time myself and our background staff were involved in professional and semi professional football, having developed players over many years to play them at the highest level possible. When Rob and Brian came to me this time with their next vision for the future I felt that the time was right to be involved and build once again. I really feel that the club is about to embark on a journey and all concerned are very optimistic regarding our future possibilities. A strong team is being assembled both on and off the pitch, and the club is currently putting people in place to achieve the infrastructure required to play at the highest level we can. We are recruiting and supporting our youth development through to our reserve team, and I am extremely delighted with the vastly experienced John Squires and Steve Ecklesley who along with myself are full Football Association licence holders and coach educators. The club will see a transitional period during this season as we begin to plan and prepare to raise the bar, this of course will mean some new faces to support our exisiting players. Our job will be to put down the relevant foundation stones on which to build our future and hopefully bring the success that so many are expecting.

Over the coming months Andy will keep us up to date with progress on the field and we will find out more about members of the team.

WHAT’S OUR

STORY?

The story of West Didsbury began in 1908 when the club was founded as Christ Church A.F.C. by Mr R F Hartley, a Sunday School Superintendent. They joined the Manchester Alliance League where they competed until the outbreak of the First World War (1914-1918). The club joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League for the 1920/21 season and changed its name to West Didsbury AFC The club was placed in Divisions 1 and A and stayed in the top flight for 25 seasons. The first team were double runners up in League and Rhodes Cup in 1922/23. In 1927, the club lifted the Rhodes Cup by beating Davenport 2-1 in the final, and by the early thirties the team had finished runners up in 1931/32 for the fourth time. It was third time unlucky for West Didsbury (West) as they were beaten in the final of the Rhodes Cup by South Salford, who won the cup for six consecutive years – a feat unequalled. The first team succumbed to relegation in 1952, losing a play-off 3-1 to Rusholme, but bounced back as second division runners up the following season. The first team were relegated again in 1959/60 and had to wait six years to regain top flight status. Indeed, relegation to the third division was narrowly avoided in 1963/64. The first team finished runners up in 1965/66 and were back in the top flight, although were relegated again in 1968/69. In 1969/70 West win the Rhodes Cup for only the second time. They faced a Monton Amateurs side that had dominated the league for a number of years. Yet against the odds West equalised twice and scored the winner in extra-time for a famous 3-2 victory. Current Chairman Brian Cripps skippered the side that day and received the trophy in near darkness. In 1970/71 West are promoted after securing runners up spot. Relegation in 1972/73 and 1974/75 meant that the team were playing in the third division. In 1976/77 West beat Heywood GSOB from the first division 2-0 in the Whitehead Cup Final. Rob Turley scored both goals. The first team won promotion in successive seasons, 1987-89, clinching both divisional championships – losing only once in two seasons.

WEST

DIDSBURY

&

The second team were unbeaten champions of Division B in 1987/88 and the club won the Aggregate Trophy for the first time in 50 years. After several years of uncertainty the club were boosted when, in 1997/98, they kicked off the new season at their splendid new home at Brookburn Road, and began to develop a vision for a community club. Further name change followed in 2003 to reflect our new location and we were elected to the Manchester League in 2006. In 2007/8 Season West won silverware again when they lifted the Murray Shield with the nucleus of our previously succesful junior team and followed up last season with one of our best recent seasons when the first team just missed promotion to the Premier Division and reached the Murray Shield Final.

ABOUT OUR OPPONENTS...

RADCLIFFE BOROUGH The Club was formed on the 24th April 1949 at the Owd’ Tower Inn in Radcliffe by Mr. Jack Pickford. They became members of the South East Lancashire Football League.

One of the clubs best achievements was saved for the Millennium year when they reached the first round of the AXA sponsored F A. Cup. Although the club lost 4-1 to York City at Gigg Lane home of Bury F C - in front of a record crowd of 2,495 for a ‘Boro’ game, it was a fabulous day for everyone connected with the Club.

In 1950-51 winning the South East Lancashire Shield, League Division Two and the W Moore Champions Cup. In 1951-52 the club completed the double winning the South East Lancashire league Division One and South East Lancashire Shield. In 1952-53 and 1954-55 the club won the W. Moore Champions Cup.

Promotion was achieved in 2002-2003 in what was a fantastic season for the ‘Boro’, despite missing out on the championship by two points to Alfreton Town, promotion was finally won thanks to the play-offs, beating Chorley in the final at Stainton Park. The club also had a fantastic run in the FA Cup when they reached the 4th Qualifying round losing out to Conference giants Chester City in front of 1138 people at Stainton Park.

The club moved to a new ground in Bright Street and the Manchester League where they won the Manchester Gylgryst in 1958-59 and 1960-61 before gaining access to the Lancashire Football Combination in 1963. In 1969-70 they won the Lancashire Combination League Challenge Cup the following season they were runners-up in the Lancashire Combination League. In 1970 the club moved to its present home Stainton Park and in 1972 won the League Cup and finished third in the league.

With ‘Boro’ back in the UniBond Premier Division and a place in the newly formed Conference North League up for grabs, in which the club had to finish in the top 13, by November ‘Boro’ were on course and as high as sixth in the league thanks to the 22 goals of Jody Banim who set an English record by scoring in 14 consecutive games however the club sold Banim to Conference promotion chasers Shrewsbury Town for a record fee of £20,000 in December 2003.

Two years later, the Club joined the Cheshire League, which became the North West Counties Football League. In 1982 the first season of the new league they secured the Second Division championship, in front of a - still a club record - Stainton Park Crowd of 1,468.

After 2 years in the UniBond premier division the club were relegated in 2006-2007. In 2007-2008, the club had a mixed league season but reached two cup finals for the first time in 10 years. Losing the UniBond Presidents Cup 2-0 to FC United of Manchester and winning their first silverware since 2003 when they defeated Hyde United 2-1 to life the Manchester Premier Cup.

After one season in the First Division, the club lifted the championship, were runners-up in the challenge cup and also runners up in the League Shield and duly made the step up into the newly formed Northern Premier League - now the UniBond League - where they have since remained. In 1995-96 the Club, for the first time in its history, reached the last 16 of the prestigious F A. Umbro Trophy, narrowly losing to Nationwide Conference side, Gateshead 2-1. In the season 1996/1997 the ‘Boro’ team achieved its highest honour, in winning the UniBond First Division title by 2 points ahead of local rivals Leigh RMI. In 1997 -98 the club for the first time reached the Manchester Premier Cup Final losing to Glossop at Maine Road former home of Manchester City.

6

In 2008-2009 the ‘Boro’ competed in their third final in two seasons this time reaching the final of the Lancashire Senior Cup – the first time the club had reached the final – losing to Skelmersdale in the last minute of extra time.

ASHTON ATHLETIC Ashton Athletic Football Club was founded in 1968 and playing in the Wigan Sunday League – winning every Division in consecutive seasons and many cup competitions before switching to the Warrington League on Saturdays where similar success was sustained. The Club developed Brocstedes Park and was admitted to the Lancashire Combination, before becoming a founder member of the North West Counties League when the Combination merged with the Cheshire league in 1982. Unfortunately financial constraints prevented the required ground improvements to be completed, and the Club was relegated into the Manchester League Division One in 1986. The drop of two leagues resulted in the majority of the playing staff moving to other club’s and for numerous years the club endeavoured to re-build. Players came and went, lacking the Club loyalty that had brought success to the Club in the 1970’s and early 80’s until the Committee embraced an ambitious youth development policy in 1999. The Club is now towards the end of a ten-year development plan to enhance its recreational facilities and expand the Club, in particular its junior section. Eight years ago the Club had two teams, 50 members, one mediocre pitch with dilapidated clubhouse and changing rooms. Since then the Club members have worked tirelessly to progress the Club within its means, and with some help from external grant sources. Assistance from the Football foundation, the Coalfields Regeneration Fund, Awards for All programme, and Wigan Council enabled a series of improvements to be completed. The main pitch was redrained, a second pitch acquired/improved, new changing rooms and Clubhouse built, disabled access provided and other improvements made to the grounds. More recently floodlights were installed and the ground has been brought up to the necessary Ground Grading for re-entry into the NWCFL, in time for the start of the 2006/7 season. Further improvements have provided additional seating and new pitch side dug outs. The 2008/2009 season also saw a further progression of the Club, having been promoted to the Premier Division of

WEST

DIDSBURY

&

the Vodkat North West Counties League. In our first season at this level of non league football the Club finished 6th, whilst the reserves improved their standing in the Vodkat Reserve Division finishing 5th and reaching the Reserve Cup final. Last season also saw further cup success for the Club retaining the Atherton Charity Cup for the third season in succession. A new vision for the Club is under discussion to further develop the Club and these will include plans for improvements to the access road, new junior changing rooms, and additional playing fields for the junior section and a proposed girls/Ladies section. The main ground is also scheduled for continued enhancement works with additional covered spectator areas and an extension to the Club being considered The Club is a voluntary organisation run by a Committee of 17 alongside approximately 25 coaches and managers. Any money raised by the Club has been ploughed back into improving the facilities and developing the youth section. The Club now has a total membership of more than 400. We have 9 junior teams consisting of approximately 160 children who take advantage of the improvement of our now excellent facilities, whilst hundreds of children and adults from opposition teams also benefit from the continually improving facilities. In addition to the 2 open age teams occasional run outs for the veteran’s team, providing a further 20+ members, the highlight being the now annual Challenge match against the Past Players of Wigan Athletic FC. The Club is keen to maintain the pace of development of the club and future plans will enable increased activity at the Club, additional junior teams and a much safer and secure environment in particular for spectators and Children. The Club is also committed and positively working towards an application to the FA for Charter Standard, and an extensive Coach Education Programme is well under way.
