Today’s visitors are no strangers as we welcome the players and officials of AFC Bury, formerly known as Bury Amateurs, after a year’s break. Two years ago we finished 3 points behind them as runners up only to be denied promotion because only one time went up as the League adjusted the size of its divisions. Bury had a solid first season in the Premier division last year and so far this season have been finding it more difficult and currently sit a few points below us. Bury started with a good draw result against current leaders Hindsford but since then they have become something of the draw specialists in the division having drawn 7 of their 11 games thus far. They secured a very creditable 2-0 home win over Walshaw and their 3 defeats to date have been against AVRO, Royton and last year’s champions Gregorians. The remaining drawn games have come against Prestwich Heys [twice], Monton, Heywood, Springhead and Dukinfield, resulting in 10 points from their 11 games. Last weekend … It's as you were at the top with leaders Hindsford, AVRO and East Manchester registering good wins. Hindsford was the slimmest margin, 1-0 at home to Manchester Gregorians, AVRO's win was a bit more spectacular, a 4-1 away to local rivals Springhead, while East Manchester stay third with a 4-3 win away to Monton. It's a 6 point gap to 4th place where Royton Town reside but it could have been a bigger gap had Royton not beaten Old Alts at home, 4-0. Walshaw Sports, who made a good start to the season could also have gone 4th but lost at home to Dukinfield 3-1. Near to the bottom, Bury and Prestwich Heys shared the points and the goals in a 3-3 draw but result of the day must surely go to Heywood St James who finally got their first win of the season at the 12th attempt winning at Wythenshawe Amateurs, 3-2.

NEXT HOME GAME

WEST ‘A’ v Leigh Athletic ‘A’ Saturday 22

Last weekend was a terrific game and a great advertisement for the Manchester Premier Division when the quality of football played in some pretty horrendous conditions was exceptional. ‘Amazing game’ was how one happy spectator put it and we also were on the receiving end of some nice compliments from a visiting West Brom fan who dropped in to see the developing facilities at West after watching West Brom’s youth team against Manchester City youth on Saturday morning. In particular there were glowing comments on the quality of the club match day programme which was also commented on very favourably by former editor Simon O’Neil who came back to watch the Georgians game.

FROM THE DUGOUT… It’s’ always easier to write programme notes after a couple of good performances… One of our aims this season has been to see consistent performances, which is essential for any team making progress in a new division. Inevitably this is linked to having a settled team! Our squad has certainly been stretched this year because of a number of factors, the number of games way have played, holidays, injuries and… surprisingly for us a couple of suspensions. Following our FA Vase experience, we have focussed on the league and it has been pleasing to add to our point’s total, the games against Manchester Gregorians and Stockpot Georgians couldn’t have been in more extreme circumstances; one in glorious sunshine and the other continual rain! But the consistency in performances was the same, players giving 100% across the park.

FORTHCOMING EVENT and CLUB NEWS th

COMMUNITY BONFIRE NIGHT – This not surprisingly will be on Saturday 5 November commencing from 6.30pm when the bonfire is lit. We need volunteers to assist with stewarding as in the past few years this event has attracted crowds of about 500 adults and children which means the club needs 10-15 people in addition to the Committee helpers. More detailed information will follow in next week’s programme. CLUBHOUSE IMPROVEMENTS – Following your suggestions a new flat screen TV was installed at the end of July and we will now be screening live Premiership games after our Saturday home games. This has involved considerable ‘investment’ in new equipment and subscriptions for ESPN and Sky Sports 1 and 2. With increased running costs and membership subscriptions at the same low level the additional funds we need must come through the clubhouse and other events…SO… PLEASE SUPPORT these initiatives at your club as we all have a stake in its success!

Another pleasing point was how we fought back twice to equalise, it’s a long time since I have seen 3 goals in as many minutes to go 0-1, 1-1, 1-2 and 2-2… we’ll need this attitude as we progress through the season. Andy Nelson

Reserve Team …the season so far…

Our Visitors – AFC Bury

The previous programme commented on our 2-2 draw at East Manchester. This game was highlighted by the introduction of 17 year old Theo Warmington. With 25 minutes to go and losing 1-0, Theo provided two superb crosses within the first 10 minutes of coming onto the pitch. These crosses resulted in two goals from Stephen Madden. Danny Iredale also came close to adding a third with a stunning shot which hit the post. East Manchester got a last minute penalty to draw the game 2-2. Whilst the result was disappointing after coming back to lead 1-2 the attitude and commitment from the players was outstanding. Our third away game in a row was the return fixture at Old Alts. We were quickly on top and playing some very good football, but for all our endeavours we were only leading by a single Stephen Madden goal at half time. In the second half we again dominated and as a result scored a further two goals, one from a free kick by Gary Lilley and the second from outside the box by Tommy Hendley. Our remaining game to date was away at bottom club Eden Vale in Bury. We again dominated play and went 0-2 up in the first 20 minutes with a brace from our inform striker Stephen Madden, taking his talley for the season to eight in eight games. Eden Vale pulled one back from a 25 yard screamer which hit the inside of the crossbar before going in, giving Daniel McLaughlin in goal no chance to make a save. We quickly re established our two goal advantage with an excellent solo run from Theo Warmington, running down our right and then cutting in to shoot past the Eden Vale Keeper from the six yard box. In the second half Eden Vale changed tactics and reverted to pumping a long ball over the top of our defence. This tactic resulted in two freakish goals. The game ended in a disappointing 3-3 draw. The commitment and spirit from the team is excellent and the players are beginning to gel as a group. There has been several very good performances so far this season from our more senior players not least from Nathan Wakelam and Paul Rowell who have tirelessly encouraged the younger players in the squad. Whilst we have some hard games in the coming weeks the teams performances over the last few weeks have shown some encouraging signs. AFC Bury can trace its roots back to 1903 when they entered the newly formed Lancashire amateur football league, under the name of Bury Athenaeum this name was carried on till the outbreak of world war one. In 1920’s a name change of Bury amateur was adopted, this was the name which the club found varying degree of success on the field with the most productive times through the 80’s. Throughout this time the club had failed to secure a permanent home, and was one of the main issue’s to be addressed when the club nearly went out of existence in 2002/03 season. Several ex-players cobbled together an infrastructure and teams to compete for the following season. An amalgamation of a local junior club was seen as the way forward with a stand-alone ground finally been found at a disused running track, after several years of success it was decided to try to climb the FA pyramid structure, thus a move to the Manchester football league It was decided that the 2011/12 season another change of name to AFC Bury to reflect a more professional bias and profile to enable a serious effort to climb the pyramid

A Team After a delayed start to the season due to a lack of fixtures in early September, the A Team are presently playing catch up on the majority of teams in the 4th Division. A significant number of new players have come into the squad over the summer and the lack of consistency is shown in the first four games whereby the team has lost two and won two. Whilst the victories have been comprehensive (5-0 home to Dukinfield and 3-2 to Stockport Gregs), the team has also had two high scoring defeats (4-1 to Prestwich and 74 to Springhead) in games they dominated but were undermined by defensive lapses. The squad is now becoming relatively well established and it is hoped that the next two consecutive home games will bring a maximum return against teams which they beat home and away last season. The league appears to be relatively wide open at this stage and it is hoped for positive progression towards the top end over the coming months. Chris Argent

West remain top after 2-2 draw with Flint Town… Despite a 100% start to the season this was going to be the real test, a home game with last years champions Flint Town. We asked Sam Hickey for a report on Sunday night after the game, (an unedited version on the Vets page on the club website), but you couldn’t get a better reaction to…How did it go? ‘ A performance to be proud of and a belter of a game’. This leaves us top, still ahead of Flint with +3 goaldifference. On the downside, we were two-up and so should arguably have hung on for all three points. We were also unlucky in that we should have had a penalty, plus they should have been down to ten men after their winger dropped a nut on me after 15-20 mins. But still, this was a classy, hard-working and disciplined performance. We took them apart at times in the first half and even had their bench purring at our passing. The defence was also superb, taking care of their dangerous striker. The first goal came after around 15-20, Simon sprang their high defensive line with a neat pass through for Kinney to lob the keeper. Although second-best, Flint were always a threat, looking to play balls quickly to their striker's feet and also over the top to run onto. Jim made a great save down to his left from a good free-kick but for the most part we kept them at bay without too much difficulty. The second half started with Flint attacking strongly but we were still defending well, and started to hit them on the break. However, Kinney rubbed it in with another nifty chip over the pint-sized keeper, 2-0. However, we then lost momentum for much of the second half. A break down the flank earned a free-kick which their left-back-turned-attacker curled/belted in off the far post (a beauty). Next, a cross from the same side found their No 9 in just enough space (for once) to head home from close range for the equaliser.

Played at Turn Moss in atrocious weather, however, the pitch was flat and in very good condition. Credit to Trafford Council for putting in proper drainage and eliminating the sniper holes. Cheadle were the best side we’ve competed against so far. They were extremely well organised and we found it difficult to break them down. It was a game of few chances. After a hard fought 35minutes Cheadle took the lead when our left back attempting a header back to Remus, who was off his line, looped the ball over him. In reply West had a few efforts but nothing that unduly worried the Cheadle keeper. In second half Cheadle extended their lead when a long cross from right was not cut out and the unmarked left winger knocked it in. More sloppy defending from a tiring midfield meant Cheadle went 3-0 up. A gap opened and too easily their midfielder was allowed to run through and pick his spot slotting ball in. West made a triple substitution and this galvanised the team into action. West came much more into the game and started to create chances. We pulled a goal back when Lewis fired in. West finished strongly but ran out of time. A great game played by 2 good footballing sides played in a wonderful spirit.
