AFC Liverpool

WELCOME

We have shared a few landmark’s with today’s visitors in recent years as AFC Liverpool were the first NW Counties side we ever played here at The Recreation Ground when were seeking to progress from the Manchester League. They were also the first side we played following our promotion to the Premier Division in August 2013 when we unfortunately ended up on the losing side as we were finding our feet in the early days of life at this level. Since then we’ve not fared very well in our two away games, drawing 2-2 at Valerie Park last season and then going down 3-1 at Marine earlier this season. We played very well in that game and were unlucky not to get at least a point, so today is a chance for us to record another first and get 3 points from our visitors. We’re pleased to welcome back the travelling AFC Liverpool fans who have always enjoyed their previous visits to WEST, and we trust they all have a safe journey back to Liverpool after today’s game. MORE POINTS ON THE ROAD Last weekend we travelled away to Runcorn Town and returned with another welcome 3 points after an eventful afternoon where, unfortunately, the main talking point was the referee. There were very few games played elsewhere and the surface at Runcorn was slippery leading to mistakes all over the place and several mis-timed challenges. We were unlucky to concede an early penalty as the ball was drilled against Callum Jones from close range but fortunate as Runcorn’s forward slipped as he hit the ball and glanced it off and over the bar. Gary Lilley was again on target to give us the lead and we should have been a couple ahead by the break. In the second half the referee began dishing out yellow cards but with great inconsistency and a second yellow saw us down to 10 with half an hour left. The spirited response was terrific as we took the game to Runcorn Town and played with more tempo and deservedly went 2-0 ahead. More cards followed and another second yellow meant we finished with 9, until the home side were reduced to ten and scored a consolation goal in the final minutes. Full credit to our lads for some terrific attacking football and for grinding out all 3 points in difficult circumstances. SEASON’S GREETINGS A big thank you to everyone who has supported today’s game and given up all the attractions of last minute Christmas shopping. We trust your good judgment will be rewarded with an entertaining game. Can we also take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and safe journeys if you are travelling to see family and friends. NEXT HOME GAME If you’re not away then our next game is next Saturday as we’ve agreed with the League to move the Boxing Day fixture back 24 hours. SATURDAY 27th December – kick off 3pm v Maine Road. Until then ENJOY THE GAME TODAY and HAVE A HAPPY AND ENJOYABLE CHRISTMAS. Rob Turley Thank you to James Lobley for providing the pictures in the programme today.

From the Dugout… Merry Christmas and welcome to today’s game against AFC Liverpool. We reach two milestones today as the club celebrates its 100th league match since joining the NWCFL. It’s a cliché but it has been a whirl wind two and a half years since we played our first game against Formby, on that day we came from 2-0 down to draw level only to concede a last minute winner. It was a harsh lesson of the realities of the league on the day but I’m very proud that 98 games later we have firmly establishing ourselves in the Premier Division. It has been a pleasing couple of games for us as we are now unbeaten in six NWCFL games. Since I was last writing my notes we’ve reached the quarter final of the MEN United Cup with a pleasing 2-0 win at home to an impressive Rochdale Town. We took the measure to introduce some players into the side who had been on the fringes in recent games and we weren’t disappointed as many of them did well to stake claims for the first team. It took an excellent penalty save from Paul Hughes to keep us at 0-0 but as the game wore on we were finally able to break down Rochdale with goals from Lewis Schofield and Nic Evangelinos. The following Saturday we recorded our record win at this level seeing off Stockport Sports 60. It’s always nice to get a result like that and on another day we could have scored even more but what was most pleasing was to see the game plan that we’d worked on in training executed exactly as planned. Credit must go to Stockport Sports too, who despite fielding a very young side continued to try and play their way back into the game right to the very end, in a couple of season’s time they are going to reap the reward of blooding so many young players. Last Saturday we made it three wins on the bounce despite playing nearly 40 minutes with 10 men as we came away 2-1 winners at Runcorn Town. For those who were there it will be an afternoon many won’t forget for a long time, I won’t dwell on this here, however the level of our football at times was superb, with Adam Hilton and Kieran Brocklehurst who are two young players making their way in the game both outstanding. It would be an understatement to say I was kicking every ball with the lads but it’s so easy to get that involved when you’re committed to seeing your players play the right way, work hard and getting their reward. Fortunately, despite a late fight-back from Runcorn, we secured the three points which would have been devastating not to. Again I’m reliably informed that we’ve already collected 22 points away from home compared to 24 all last season and with 9 games remaining to surpass that. It feels fitting that our opponents today are AFC Liverpool, a side we’ve got very good relations with, playing us several times in pre-season over the last several years as we geared up to enter the NWCFL and were also our first ever Premier Division opponents. We faced off at their new home at Marine FC on a beautiful day in October, we were superb for an hour which was unfortunately ended by two Liverpool goals, we were still in the game until Jordan Hitchen was unlucky to get sent off and the penalty made it academic. We won plaudits on the day for our performance and today we will try to take the next step and claim the three points. Enjoy the game. Andy Nelson

West 6 Stockport Sports 0 match report‌ West registered back to back wins at home and made it 5 games unbeaten in the league with the 6-0 demolition of Stockport Sports. West started brightly and immediately announced their attacking intentions when Nic Evangelinos had a low hard strike tipped onto the post from Sports goalkeeper Will Burns in the opening minutes. The big keeper was called into action again when he pulled off another save from Evangelinos at the far post after Callum Schofield had launched his throw in deep into the box. The breakthrough came on 11 minutes when Gary Lilley picked up the ball from 35 yards and flew a rocket of a shot into the top right hand corner for his first ever NWCFL goal. He celebrated in style racing to the dugout to embrace Anthony Potts. West continued the pressure with Burns again called into action with a smart save from a Brocklehurst shot and then saving with his legs from a West short corner. The second took until 24 minutes, after a lull in play from West in which Stockport's young side grew into the game, Scott Jones unleashed a thunderous strike which cannoned off the cross bar and the rebound was finished off by Matt Eckersley. That's how it remained until the break as both sides were determined to play their football despite the pitch conditions. In the second half West made it 3-0 on 52 minutes when Eckersley broke through the defence, laying a pass through to Brocklehurst who got his goal with a lovely dink over the Sports goalkeeper. Eckersley, in the mood for goals, immediately sought a fourth with a decent effort curling just past the post from range. West manager rang the changes with Dion Battes and Adam Hilton replacing Scott Jones and Nic Evangelinos respectively. It was Battes who made the fourth, racing a down the left and putting a superb low cross into the path of Matt Eckersley who added his second of the game, albeit with the slight suspicion of offside about it. Lilley, having got one, almost made it two with another low shot well turned round the post by Burns who by this point was being forced to play through the pain having picked up a knock in the first half. Scott Mason almost added the fifth when his corner seemed to beat Burns at his near post, but he tipped it back onto the post with the home crowd appealing for a goal. West didn't let up with both Hilton and Brocklehurst both having good chances to extend the lead before Lewis Schofield's chance hit the post holding up the box netting. It was finally 5-0 with Hilton brilliantly cutting in from the right and his low shot squirming under the Sports goalkeeper. At the other end West goalkeeper Paul Hughes ensured his second consecutive clean sheet coming out of his goal to put off the Sports forward just enough for him to fire his shot into the car park. It was eventually 6-0 on 87 minutes as Hilton showed quick feet again in the box and finished another low shot for this second goal of the afternoon. The final whistle blew on an impressive West performance who recorded their biggest ever win in the NWCFL Premier Division. Credit must go to Stockport Sports, fielding their Under 21s side, who continued to try to play throughout and didn't give up. Rob McKay

WW1 Centenary Remembrance at Wests… Football to honour 1914 Christmas Truce centenary this December

The Duke of Cambridge and Theo Walcott have come together to help kick off Football Remembers - and mark the centenary of the First World War Christmas Truce. A joint project between The FA, Premier League, Football League and the British Council – Football Remembers marks the 100th anniversary of the Christmas Truce, when soldiers from both sides of the trenches laid down their weapons to play a game of football, share drinks and exchange gifts on No Man’s Land across the battlefields of the Western Front. Every club in the country – from the Premier League to the grassroots - were asked to create a unique photographic record of football a century on from the Christmas Truce in all games between 5-14 December. The same activity happened at every match – a mixed squad photo featuring both teams in the spirit of the togetherness shown by troops from both sides in December 1914. Wests joined with football across the country on Saturday December 6th with joint picture against Stockport Sports (see below) and we will do it again on December Sat 27th which is the nearest day to the centenary of the Christmas Truce before the game against Maine Road.

Runcorn Town 1 West 2 match report… West claimed three points at the Pavilions for the second consecutive season with an accomplished performance that would sadly be overshadowed by an extraordinary number of cautions shown. Manager Andy Nelson recalled Anthony Potts, Callum Jones and Adam Hilton to the starting line up with Alex Baird, Scott Mason and Lewis Schofield all unavailable. The hosts started the brighter and six minutes in Runcorn Town were awarded a penalty when the ball cannoned off Callum Jones boot and hit him in the hand from point blank range and the referee pointed to the spot. However Runcorn couldn’t convert as Danny Toone’s shot cannoned off the cross bar and into the field behind the ground. Gary Lilley immediately punished Runcorn for their miss as on 11 minutes he notched his second league goal of the season finishing a low shot into the bottom left hand corner. On 16 minutes Anthony Potts became the first West player booked with a late challenge on Runcorn Town’s Jack Irlam who was unfortunately carried off with a twisted ankle in the fall. Evangelinos almost made it 2-0 when Matt Eckersley put in a superb low cross along the six yard box but he couldn’t quite reach it at the far post. Kieran Brocklehurst would come the closest to adding second goal in the first half as he hooked a volley from the edge of the area only to see it clip the post and bounce out with Evangelinos shot for the rebound blocked for a corner. Mark Rogers was booked just before half time after he went up for a 50-50 ball with a Runcorn player, both catching the other. However, the referee deemed it a foul and booked the West captain. Callum Jones was also added into the referee’s notebook in stoppage time as Runcorn’s Chris Thompson poked him in the eye, he was booked, along with Thompson, for knocking his hand away. West went into half time with a deserved lead at 1-0 and playing the better football. West came out for the second half on top but immediately faced an uphill battle as Mark Rogers was shown a second yellow card for a mistimed challenge on the half way line. Kieran Brocklehurst also followed him into the book for dissent as he was brought down at the edge of the area only for the referee to over-rule his flagging linesman and award the home side a free kick much to the dismay of the away dugout and travelling West support. Despite not being on the field Steve Settle followed him into the book as he led the protestations from the touchline. In spite of being reduced to 10 men West continued to press high up the field and they deservedly increased their lead when ‘man of the match’ Adam Hilton latched onto a top quality pass from Eckersley, he carried the ball 25 yards, racing into the box and beating the Runcorn keeper at the near post. West continued to push forward trying to put the game beyond Runcorn Town, first Eckersley had a long range effort fly just past the post whilst Hilton continued to torment the home back line. On the other wing Evangelinos continued to cause difficulties for the home defence and thought he’d won a free kick on the edge of the area when he knocked the ball past two www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

defenders and was brought down. However the referee thought otherwise and booked him for diving despite no appeal for a free kick. Jerome Bryson made his long awaited return in place of Evangelinos and immediately skinned his marker, running the ball to the by-line and pulled back a cross but no one could get on the end of it. Adam Hilton was next in the book as he kicked out at the Runcorn right back when the two were on the floor after a challenge. Gary Lilley was next in the book as he conceded a free kick at the edge of the area despite seemingly getting little of his man and never leaving his feet. In stoppage time West were reduced to 9 men as Potts received a ball at the edge of the area and was caught in possession and brought down his marker at the edge of the area. A second yellow followed before players had to be separated from one another. Runcorn Town’s Daniel Toone was shown a red card for pushing his head into Dion Battes face who was also bizarrely booked for his involvement. After several minutes delay Paul Shanley calmly lobbed his free kick over the wall to bring the score-line back to 2-1 and the two sides left to play five minutes of additional time ten versus nine. It was the first time Paul Hughes had been beaten this season. Despite some later pressure from the home side West were able to see out the game, finishing at almost 5 o’clock, and collect a deserved three points in a game they were the better side for large spells even when going down to 10 men. Sadly, the volume of cards handed out by the referee will overshadow another superb performance on the road resulting in West’s 7th away win in the league this season, one more than in all of last season away from home.

We wish all the supporters, management and players the very best over the Christmas period and for 2015

History…

AFC Liverpool

AFC Liverpool was formed in 2008, by Liverpool FC fans, who had becoming increasingly frustrated at the cost and difficulty in obtaining tickets for the Premiership. The supposed ‘39th game’ in which Premier League fixtures would be played in different parts of the world proved to be the final straw, highlighting that top flight football is now more concerned about money than its fans. A website was created and, with the response being positive, work began to move to the next stage and create a steering group to make the club a reality. At the beginning of March 2008 AFC Liverpool was officially formed and it was made clear that the club was not in any way a response to the ownership issue at Anfield or a protest against Liverpool Football Club, more a reaction to issues at the top end of football in general. By May, AFC Liverpool had appointed its first manager in Derek Goulding. The following month the club arranged a groundshare with Prescot Cables and had been accepted into the North West Counties Football League. The club’s first game was a 1-1 draw in a friendly with St Helens Town on 16th July 2008 and they began their inaugural league season extremely well, beating Darwen 5-0 in their first competitive game and going on a run of ten wins in the first eleven games. However they failed to keep this momentum going, and the club eventually finished fourth in the league. The season did prove fruitful though as a victory in the final of the First Division Trophy over Padiham at Ashton Athletic provided the club’s first piece of silverware. 2009/10 began with three successive victories but after this the season became very indifferent. After a 5-2 home defeat to Atherton Collieries on Easter Monday, Derek Goulding left the club and ex assistant and goalkeeping coach Paul Moore was appointed caretaker Manager. Under Moore’s stewardship AFC had a strong end to the 2009/10 campaign, winning five out of their last seven league games to climb to fifth in the league and also retaining the First Division Trophy, coming from behind to beat Cheadle Town 2-1 in the final at Flixton. In doing so, AFC Liverpool became the first club not only to win the Trophy twice but also successfully defend it. 2010/11 also began in promising fashion with the Reds going on a ten game unbeaten run after an opening day loss at AFC Darwen. However despite amassing their highest ever points total promotion never looked probable due to the form of would be Champions AFC Blackpool and second placed Runcorn Town, resulting in a fourth placed finish, missing out on third by goal difference. There was disappointment too in the First Division Trophy when they reached the final for a third consecutive time only to lose to Atherton Collieries 3-2 in extra time. In the FA Vase, steady progress was made to the third round, where their dreams of Wembley were dashed by a defeat at Whitley Bay, who would go on to claim a third successive triumph. However at the League AGM in July 2011 there was a surprise when Rossendale were expelled from the league and Formby were demoted to the First Division. Holker Old Boys, who finished third on goal difference, declined an invitation to take up a place in the Premier Division, meaning that AFC Liverpool were invited to take the place and the club accepted the chance that was offered to them.

AFC Liverpool History continued

The 2011/12 season started badly in terms of results but not performances for AFC Liverpool as they had to wait until November for their first League victory, which came about in the form of a 7-0 demolition of Winsford United. From that point, AFC Liverpool, who had been rooted to the foot of the table, began the steady climb out of danger, ultimately finishing in nineteenth place, sixteen points clear of the relegation places. 2012/13 saw AFC Liverpool consolidate their position in the North West Counties Premier Division with an eleventh placed finish, accumulating sixty points in the process. As the season progressed, manager Paul Moore built a core squad of players, which played some of the most exciting, attractive football in the league and post Christmas, won fifteen and drew five of twenty eight games, including a defeat of eventual Premier Division champions Padiham on their home patch. The performances were rewarded in the final game of the season as the Reds beat recently crowned champions of the Evo-Stik NPL First Division North, Skelmersdale United, 3-0 in the Liverpool Senior Cup semi final to book an all North West Counties clash with Bootle in the final. Last season the Reds started the campaign at a pace, topping the early tables. They fell just short of being the youngest club to claim the Liverpool Senior Cup, losing the final on penalties, and remained among the league's pacesetters until November and December when six points taken from eight games saw them drop away. Paul Moore's side remained consistent post Christmas though and the club eventually achieved their highest league finish, ending up seventh with a total of seventy points.

A Brief History… West Didsbury and Chorlton FC, have come a long way in their 105 year history which began back in 1908 when the club was founded as Christ Church A.F.C. by Mr R F Hartley, a Sunday School Superintendent at the church on Princess Parkway, West Didsbury.

West played friendlies at first and then in the Manchester Alliance League until the First World War 1914. After the War the club joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League for the 1920/21 season and had to change its name to West Didsbury AFC, as that League did not permit a name suggesting association with any other body. The club was placed in Divisions 1 and A, staying in the top flight for 25 seasons. The first honours were double runners up in Div 1 and Rhodes Cup in 1922/23, and the club remained in the L+C League until 2006, winning many honours and providing 4 League Presidents along the way. The home ground from before 1914 until the mid 1980’s was Christie Playing Fields, and then the owners, Manchester and Salford Playing Fields Society, gave the club notice to quit having decided to sell off the land for commercial development – now ironically called ‘Christie Fields’ office park. After several years’ nomadic existence searching for a new home, the club acquired the redundant and overgrown Recreation Ground at Brookburn Road in 1996, and began to restore this to active use and develop a vision for a community club. This was down to the hard work of a core of players and Committee who refused to let the club fold. Work was completed in time to start the 1997-98 season using excellent new changing rooms and clubhouse facilities aided by a Lottery grant, new sponsors and members’ fundraising, but without a penny from the Playing Fields Society sale proceeds. Further name change followed in 2003 to reflect the new location in Chorlton and the club was then elected to the Manchester League in 2006. In 2007/8 West won its first Manchester League silverware lifting the Murray Shield in the last game of our centenary year. That team was the nucleus of the previously successful junior team and the following season 2008/09 West just missed promotion to the Premier Division and again reached the Murray Shield Final. won their League. With a new management team led by Andy Nelson, 2009/10 was very successful and honours spread throughout the club. The 1st team won the Murray Shield (the third consecutive year in the final) and was league runners-up. The reserves won the Bridgewater League Cup and the U17 Youth team won their League.

In 2010/2011 the 1st team won the Manchester League First Division title in style with a fantastic 65 points out of 72 possible. This ranks as one of the highest points totals per game in Manchester League history dating back over a century. The clubs reserve team and youth teams also had terrific seasons, resulting in promotion and for the second year reaching the Bridgewater Cup Final. The Youth team reached yet another final where they were just pipped to the trophy by New Mills. The Veterans were runners up in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans League and then started a second veterans team such was the interest in the club. Plans were also made to formally integrate junior football as the club Vision is to be a FA Charter Standard Community Club, playing at the highest possible level it can whilst remaining financially viable. Further improved saw floodlights erected in 2011 to meet FA requirements and West competed in the FA Vase for the first time in 2011-2012 as a Step 7 club. Election to the NWCFL followed in June 2012 and the club had an incredible first season winning the Div1 Trophy, finishing in 3rd position after an amazing run in during March and April to secure promotion and also winning a guaranteed FA Cup place. The over 45’s team again chipped in with Cheshire Veterans league silverware. 2013-14 saw the club meet a number of challenges on and off the field by recovering from a series of early season setbacks and defeats in August to consolidate with a very creditable 12th place league finish. Two new stands were installed to improves the spectator facilities, new grass pitches and youth teams were added as part of the long term development plan, whilst remaining as a volunteer run, ‘not for profit’ club. The other historic milestones achieved during the season were the 2-0 home victory over Abbey Hey in the club’s first ever appearance in the FA Cup followed by a 2-1 first ever FA Vase victory away at NCEL Rossington Main near Doncaster in mid September. This season the club hosts Brighouse Town from the Evo Stik league in the FA Cup at the end of August having been given a walk by the FA against NWCFL new club Cammell Laird 1907.
