3rd August 2013 – AFC Liverpool

WELCOME TO A NEW SEASON It is with real pleasure and anticipation that we welcome the players, officials and supporters of AFC Liverpool to The Recreation Ground for our first ever game in the NWCFL Premier Division. The weeks at the end of last season were a whirlwind of fixtures in between some quite amazing events as we finished in 3rd spot to clinch promotion with only minutes of the season remaining. Since then we have been hard at work preparing for the new season which is sure to test our abilities and resources to the full. We’ll have a full programme of 42 league games plus at least 4 cup ties in the FA Cup, FA Vase, Lancashire FA Trophy and NWCFL Challenge Cup. Our pre-season programme has gone well with a new attendance record of 430 set by the visit of FC United of Manchester on 10th July, when we fully deserved a 3-1 win. This was followed by tight games against Prescott Cables [1-3] and Curzon Ashton [0-1] both of which could have gone either way, before a competitive 2-2 draw against Runcorn Linnets, one of this season’s favourites for the Premier Division title. OUR VISITORS – AFC LIVERPOOL We really are delighted that AFC Liverpool are our visitors today for this Premier game and the first competitive league fixture between our two clubs. AFCL have been a real encouragement to us in recent years dating back to 12th December 2009 when we were in Division 1 of the Manchester league, testing ourselves against higher level teams, and preparing our first application to join the NWCFL. Both clubs had no fixtures that day and AFCL kindly travelled across to play us along with a few of their hardy fans. The second game was last summer on Saturday 21st July 2012 as we played NWC Premier teams prior to starting life in Division 1, and we have fond memories of a warm and sunny day and some good fun with the visiting Liverpool fans. On both occasions so far our visitors have run out narrow winners and their friendly fans are most welcome back at WEST today. The other interesting fact is that AFC Liverpool were promoted from 4th place at the end of season 2010-2011 when Rossendale were expelled from the league and Formby demoted. Holker OB, who finished 3rd, had declined an invitation to join the Premier Division and AFCL leapt at the chance then offered to them. There are comparables with last season when Formby’s unfortunate problems gave West promotion at the first time of asking. Anyway, that’s the potted history so far and it’s now all about the stern challenge we face today as we seek to get our first points on the board in the Premier Division. MAKING HISTORY – OUR FIRST APPEARANCE IN THE FA CUP [after 105 years!] We have been drawn at home for our first ever game in the FA Cup when we face ABBEY HEY here at Brookburn Road on Sat 17th August, kick off 3pm. This will be a very special occasion for the club so please note the date, come to the game and encourage as many others as possible to boost our attendance and support Andy and the team. CLUB DEVELOPMENT – Latest news We have applied for planning permission for the ground grading improvements to the ground for Step 5 and plans of our proposals are on display in the clubhouse. If you have any questions about this then please ask anyone on Committee for more information. Visit www.clubwebsite.co.uk/westdidsburychorlton/ to keep abreast of all our breaking news. View from the Dugout I’d like to welcome you all to Brookburn Road today for what is a historic day in the club’s history as we embark on our first campaign in the North West Counties Premier Division and as manager I’m proud to be a part of it. As a club we are reaping the reward of all the hard work everyone involved in the club has put and I’m sure there are still further exciting times ahead as we continue to work towards our vision. We’ve had a busy pre-season schedule first of all welcoming FC United here in front of a record crowd, quickly followed by games against Prescot Cables, Curzon Ashton and Runcorn Linnets. Although the record books show that we lost more than we won they were not a true reflection of the story as we were able to try out new players and our performances merited more against opposition from higher leagues as well as Runcorn who are undoubtedly one of the favourites to win our league this season. By the time you are reading this we will have completed our tour of the Isle of Man to face their national team which is another achievement for the club. The playing staff and I are aware of the challenges ahead for the new season playing at a higher level against sides with big budgets but we are confident that we can rise to the challenge and provide our supporters with plenty to celebrate throughout the season. Finally I’d like to welcome the players, officials and supporters of AFC Liverpool. Enjoy the game. Regards Andy Nelson

Our visitors… AFC Liverpool AFC Liverpool was formed in 2008, by Liverpool FC fans, who had becoming increasingly frustrated at the cost and difficulty in obtaining tickets for the Premiership. The supposed ‘39th game’ in which Premier League fixtures would be played in different parts of the world proved to be the final straw, highlighting that top flight football is now more concerned about money than its fans. A website was created and, with the response being positive, work began to move to the next stage and create a steering group to make the club a reality. At the beginning of March 2008 AFC Liverpool was officially formed and it was made clear that the club was not in any way a response to the ownership issue at Anfield or a protest against Liverpool Football Club, more a reaction to issues at the top end of football in general. By May, AFC Liverpool had appointed its first manager in Derek Goulding. The following month the club arranged a groundshare with Prescot Cables and had been accepted into the North West Counties Football League. The club’s first game was a 1-1 draw in a friendly with St Helens Town on 16th July 2008 and they began their inaugural league season extremely well, beating Darwen 5-0 in their first competitive game and going on a run of ten wins in the first eleven games. However they failed to keep this momentum going, and the club eventually finished fourth in the league. The season did prove fruitful though as a victory in the final of the First Division Trophy over Padiham at Ashton Athletic provided the club’s first piece of silverware. 2009/10 began with three successive victories but after this the season became very indifferent. After a 5-2 home defeat to Atherton Collieries on Easter Monday, Derek Goulding left the club and ex assistant and goalkeeping coach Paul Moore was appointed caretaker Manager. Under Moore’s stewardship AFC had a strong end to the 2009/10 campaign, winning five out of their last seven league games to climb to fifth in the league and also retaining the First Division Trophy, coming from behind to beat Cheadle Town 2-1 in the final at Flixton. In doing so, AFC Liverpool became the first club not only to win the Trophy twice but also successfully defend it. 2010/11 also began in promising fashion with the Reds going on a ten game unbeaten run after an opening day loss at AFC Darwen. However despite amassing their highest ever points total promotion never looked probable due to the form of would be Champions AFC Blackpool and second placed Runcorn Town, resulting in a fourth placed finish, missing out on third by goal difference. There was disappointment too in the First Division Trophy when they reached the final for a third consecutive time only to lose to Atherton Collieries 3-2 in extra time. In the FA Vase, steady progress was made to the third round, where their dreams of Wembley were dashed by a defeat at Whitley Bay, who would go on to claim a third successive triumph. However at the League AGM in July 2011 there was a surprise when Rossendale were expelled from the league and Formby were demoted to the First Division. Holker Old Boys, who finished third on goal difference, declined an invitation to take up a place in the Premier Division, meaning that AFC Liverpool were invited to take the place and the club accepted the chance that was offered to them. The 2011/12 season started badly in terms of results but not performances for AFC Liverpool as they had to wait until November for their first League victory, which came about in the form of a 7-0 demolition of Winsford United. From that point, AFC Liverpool, who had been rooted to the foot of the table, began the steady climb out of danger, ultimately finishing in nineteenth place, sixteen points clear of the relegation places. Last season saw AFC Liverpool consolidate their position in the North West Counties Premier Division with an eleventh placed finish, accumulating sixty points in the process. As the season progressed, manager Paul Moore built a core squad of players, and post Christmas, won fifteen and drew five of twenty eight games, including a defeat of eventual Premier Division champions Padiham on their home patch. The performances were rewarded in the final game of the season as the Reds beat recently crowned champions of the Evo-Stik NPL First Division North, Skelmersdale United, 3-0 in the Liverpool Senior Cup semi final to book an all North West Counties clash with Bootle in the final.

WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

Pre Season Friendlies reports… Wednesday 10th July WEST 3 FC UNITED 1 West Didsbury & Chorlton got their pre-season campaign off to the best possible start with a victory over a youthful FC United team at Brookburn Road. West manager Andy Nelson had the luxury of his entire squad available for selection including three new faces in front of a home record crowd. The hosts went close early with Lee Malkin going close twice, first rounding the goalkeeper but his shot was superbly saved by Rebels goalkeeper Ryan Barker, and rounding him a second time before seeing another chance cleared off the line. However it was the visitors who took the lead on 35 minutes after a cross from FC United’s Yousif Yousif on the right hand side found Jon Poizer unmarked in the penalty area and finished coolly under West’s Ben Simpson. West got themselves back into the game on the stroke of half time thanks to a Gareth Thomas penalty after a shot from outside the area was adjudged to have been handled. West then made eleven changes at half time with Andy Nelson looking to focus on conditioning as the second half as West sought a winner, with winger Bobby Ashcroft in particularly impressing, but the moment of the night came from centre forward Tre Baldwin-Willis late on as he beat three defenders before firing the ball home from just inside the penalty area. The lead was doubled moments later after Tommy Walsh capitalised on an under hit Kevin Masirika back pass and finishing the ball between the goalkeepers legs to give the hosts a famous 3-1 victory Saturday 13th July WEST 1 Prescot Cables 3 West went down to a hard working Prescot Cables on a stunningly beautiful day at Brookburn Road. Prescot made the early running, looking the more threatening side in the first half, and deservedly took the lead on 25 minutes when Ged Murphy got on the end of a corner flicked on at the near post. West immediately hit back with their best move of the half but Lee Malkin’s shot was well saved. The lead was doubled on 31 minutes as the impressive Isaac Kosoluka latched onto a terrific through ball and finished with a sublime chip over goalkeeper Ben Simpson. Lee Malkin again went close before half time but his volley over the keeper was headed off the line. In the second half West rallied and immediately halved the deficit when Gareth Thomas broke through and placed past the Cables goalkeeper for his second goal in pre-season. West put the pressure on Prescot, who were content to hit West on the break, throughout the second half. However it was Prescot who got the decisive goal when Dave Dempsey curled a free kick over the wall with the final kick of an entertaining game. After the match manager Andy Nelson was, despite the result, happy with the run out; “Naturally we want to win every game but we put the work in and we didn’t look a division apart against what was an almost full strength Prescot side.” “We’ve added new faces to our squad over the summer and there is a little ring rust. We are fortunate that we were able to field 22 players on Wednesday against FC United. We’ve added real competition for every place and, more importantly, quality too.” Saturday 20th July WEST 2 Runcorn Linnets 2 West faced Runcorn Linnets in a thrilling advert for the League coming from behind to lead 2-1 but conceded a late goal and had to settle for a 2-2 draw. The game was a plenty with frenzied tempo that has become synonymous with West but it was Linnets who took a deserved lead on 18th minutes thanks to a towering header at the far post after a cross from the right hand side. West fought their way back into the game and levelled on 32 minutes thanks to Danny Summers who chased an under hit backpass and the resultant challenge on the goalkeeper saw the ball deflected into the net. West took the lead on the stroke of half time after Lewis Schofield’s free kick from near the half way line soared over the goalkeeper into the net. The second half didn’t let up as Andy Nelson chose to rotate his side ahead of the trip to the Isle of Man next weekend and both sides had chances to score but it was Linnets who levelled in the final minute of the game as a free kick from deep was headed in at the far post by Michael Burke. Manager Andy Nelson was positive despite the late goal; “I’m very pleased with the way we played. We were missing 5 key players and there is only disappointment because we were in a position to win the game against opposition who are expected to win the league this season.”

From the Terrace … There is something special about the opening day of the football season. Football is played in (hopefully) decent weather, everyone has hope of a successful year (until 5pm Saturday evening anyway), there is the lure of the new kit, new players wearing it and trips to new grounds and stadia to get excited about (Congleton Town anyone?). Even lapsed winter traditions like the infuriation of Shearer and Hanson on Match of the Day and bemoaning the match report in the Sunday newspapers don’t seem so bad when there is 9 months for your team to prove their absolutism wrong. Opening Day means for the first time in months having a purpose on a Saturday afternoon and having somewhere to be because despite what we tell our girlfriend’s and wives (and some girlfriends tell their boyfriends and husbands) is that I would much rather be on the 10.05 train to (insert name of sleepy footballing backwater town here) than wandering round the Trafford Centre or in Homebase buying a shed and most importantly this is the beginning of a 9 month wedding exclusion period. (Maybe black out this section when you go home). Quite frankly no man alive should be that excited about Alsager Town or Rotherham United away on a Tuesday night. Yet people do, and its justifiable to be excited about football as despite the occasional bad press some supporters get, there is nothing better than taking your place on the terrace or in the stand and talk to a likeminded individual who’s name you don’t know but have most likely shared a joke or two, discussed the deployment of wingers who cut inside and more than likely been on the receiving end of a crazy bear hug sharing in the unique joy that is a late winner or last gasp equaliser. Yes, there is nothing like the opening day of the season, dreaming of all the days out to come and winning seasons (as the American’s say) maybe even being the side that lifts the title at the end of it. The only downside to all this is as your reading this enjoying a pie and tasty beverage in the club house is that someone forgot to book the day off work hmmm…. Let me know the score. Rob McKay

WHAT’S OUR

STORY?

West Didsbury and Chorlton FC, have come a long way in their 105 year history which began back in 1908 when the club was founded as Christ Church A.F.C. by Mr R F Hartley, a Sunday School Superintendent at the church on Princess Parkway, West Didsbury.

West played friendlies at first and then in the Manchester Alliance League until the First World War 1914. After the War the club joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League for the 1920/21 season and had to change its name to West Didsbury AFC, as that League did not permit a name suggesting association with any other body. The club was placed in Divisions 1 and A, staying in the top flight for 25 seasons. The first honours were double runners up in Div 1 and Rhodes Cup in 1922/23, and the club remained in the L+C League until 2006, winning many honours and providing 4 League Presidents along the way. The home ground from before 1914 until the mid 1980’s was Christie Playing Fields, and then the owners, Manchester and Salford Playing Fields Society, gave the club notice to quit having decided to sell off the land for commercial development – now ironically called ‘Christie Fields’ office park. After several years’ nomadic existence searching for a new home, the club acquired the redundant and overgrown Recreation Ground at Brookburn Road in 1996, and began to restore this to active use and develop a vision for a community club. This was down to the hard work of a core of players and Committee who refused to let the club fold. Work was completed in time to start the 1997-98 season using excellent new changing rooms and clubhouse facilities aided by a Lottery grant, new sponsors and members’ fundraising, but without a penny from the Playing Fields Society sale proceeds. Further name change followed in 2003 to reflect the new location in Chorlton and the club was then elected to the Manchester League in 2006. In 2007/8 West won its first Manchester League silverware lifting the Murray Shield in the last game of our centenary year. That team was the nucleus of the previously successful junior team and the following season 2008/09 West just missed promotion to the Premier Division and again reached the Murray Shield Final. won their League.

With a new management team led by Andy Nelson, 2009/10 was very successful and honours spread throughout the club. The 1st team won the Murray Shield (the third consecutive year in the final) and was league runners-up. The reserves won the Bridgewater League Cup and the U17 Youth team won their League. In 2010/2011 the 1st team won the Manchester League First Division title in style with a fantastic 65 points out of 72 possible. This ranks as one of the highest points totals per game in Manchester League history dating back over a century. The clubs reserve team and youth teams also had terrific seasons, resulting in promotion and for the second year reaching the Bridgewater Cup Final. The Youth team reached yet another final where they were just pipped to the trophy by New Mills. The Veterans were runners up in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans League and then started a second veterans team such was the interest in the club. Plans were also made to formally integrate junior football as the club Vision is to be a FA Charter Standard Community Club, playing at the highest possible level it can whilst remaining financially viable. Further improved saw floodlights erected in 2011 to meet FA requirements and West competed in the FA Vase for the first time in 2011-2012 as a Step 7 club. Election to the NWCFL followed in June 2012 and the club had an incredible first season winning the Div1 Trophy, finishing in 3 rd position after an amazing run in during March and April to secure promotion and also winning a guaranteed FA Cup place. The over 45’s team again chipped in with Cheshire Veterans league silverware. 2013-14 promises to be another testing season as the club adjusts to life in the NWCFL Premier Division, improves its spectator facilities, adds new grass pitches and youth teams as part of its development plan, and aims for long term consolidation and stability at this level whilst remaining as a volunteer run, ‘not for profit’ club.
