EDITORIAL

Barnoldswick Town

WELCOME TO BARNOLDSWICK TOWN Barnoldswick are our visitors today and we welcome all the players, management committee and supporters for what is a repeat of the opening game of the current season when we managed to return from our coach trip with all 3 points on an afternoon when we made a very bright start but then laboured at times against an industrious home side who had the misfortune to play for most of the game with only ten men. Since then Barnoldswick have been struggling to pull away from the lower reaches of the table but they have posted some spirited results lately and we will need to recover from our last two away games when two very contrasting displays saw the same end result of no points. At AFC Liverpool we played some excellent passing football on an immaculate surface [at Marine FC] and at 1-1 at the start of the second half there was only one team in it. We were left to rue a number of decent chances which all went begging and then the home side broke away to score a cruel second goal when the winger was well offside but play was waved on and the resultant cross was buried to put the home side ahead. The game was effectively settled as a contest shortly after when Jordan Hitchen was shown a red card when left one on one against the home forward. Another harsh decision which apparently was identical to an incident in the midweek game when the referee on that occasion showed yellow. At Glossop we were under the cosh from the start as Jordan Hitchen was injured during the warm up and Donncha Murphy forsake his duties as physio to pull on the yellow jersey and try to keep the home side at bay. Glossop played an intense pressing game from the start giving us no time to settle or play our passing game but here again we were still in the game at 0-1 with half time approaching. Glossop then scored a second which was well offside but the assistant remained unmoved by several appeals and the referee awarded the goal giving us a mountain to climb in the second half to recover a 2 goal deficit. Glossop were in no mood to take the foot off the gas and blitzed us with 3 goals in the first 5 minutes of the second half which finished the game as a contest, before an unfortunate own goal added a sixth towards the end. Having seen Runcorn Linnets and Glossop this season it is pretty evident these are two clubs with squads and a club infrastructure and fan base which most other clubs simply cannot match. In addition our cause wasn’t helped again by non availability because of work commitments and the pre match injury to Jordan. Having said all that we are still in a slightly better position than at the same stage of last season but we need to get back to winning ways today although Barnoldswick will be equally determined to get the points to get away from the wrong end of the table. UPCOMING FIXTURES Next week we have no midweek game, which thankfully gives the squad time for a breather, and then next Saturday 25th October at 3pm we are away at Ashton Town in the League Challenge Cup, known this season as the MEN UNITED CUP. Our next home game is on Tuesday 28th October at 7.45pm when our visitors from East Manchester are Abbey Hey for what they recently dubbed the thinking man’s Manchester Derby! THE FA VASE – Sat 1st November at 3pm v GLOSSOP NORTH END Our first round FA Vase game is at home against Glossop North End, when we have a chance to put last Tuesday’s result well and truly behind us and aim for a performance more akin to when we played them at home in the league and were very unlucky to go down to a solitary goal. Let’s hope we can cause an upset and get our name in the hat for the next round. Thank you again for your support this afternoon, enjoy the game and have a safe journey home afterwards. From the Dugout‌ Hello and welcome back to Brookburn Road for today's game against Barnoldswick Town. Although we were home against Rossington Main only a couple of weeks ago it has felt much longer as we've travelled away in five of the last six games. Since we were last here we have travelled to Colne in the Lancashire FA Trophy where we were victorious against a much fancied Colne side who fielded a strong team. We gave ourselves the opportunity to experiment with some fringe players and were very happy with what we saw on the evening, especially with Kieran Brocklehurst who notched two goals on his debut. Kieran, joined the club last season and has spent much of the time with the reserves and has scored plenty of goals for them, he has really seized his chance and the immediate comparisons to Tommy Walsh aren't too far off the mark either. Against Rossington Main, we did what had to be done to ensure that we reached the first round of the FA Vase. We dominated the first half and were deservedly ahead at half time through Kieran Brocklehurst and really we should have been further ahead. We didn't play as well in the second half but we got that second crucial goal and we looked to be cruising into the next round, however we conceded a soft goal, saw Gary Lilley sent off at the death and then had Rossington Main throw the kitchen sink at us in the last five minutes when we should have been out of sight. However, we went through and we've be rewarded with a home tie against Glossop North End, where we will have to play to our absolute best to get a positive result. On the Tuesday night we then travelled to Stockport Sports and although we didn't play to our best we got the three points that we needed and showed great spirit to come from behind after we'd looked lacklustre in the first half. Credit must go to Stockport as despite the fact that they'd lost their last two home games 0-8 and 2-8 respectively they gave a determined and disciplined performance. This afternoon we welcome Barnoldswick Town back to Brookburn Road for what is our fourth meeting in less than 12 months. Although we currently hold the advantage 2-1 having won at the Silent Nights Stadium on the opening day of the season 4-2, where our play was so good that we could have won by a greater margin, we still remember 'Barlick' as one of the best sides who came here last season and made us work very hard for a 3-2 victory. Finally I would like to ask that all supporters to please try and support the club with our upcoming bonfire, it’s a huge source of revenue for the club and we need you to help make it a success. Enjoy the Game. Andy Nelson

West 2 Rossington Main 1 match report‌ West advanced to the first round of the FA Vase for the second consecutive year after overcoming Rossington Main at home thanks to goals from Kieran Brocklehurst and Tre Baldwin-Willis. Having rested several players in the mid-week trip to Colne West manager Andy Nelson handed Kieran Brocklehurst his home debut after his brace in the Lancashire Trophy replacing the unavailable Christopher McDonagh. With Lewis Schofield injured Adam Hilton returned on the left of midfield, Callum Schofield returning to partner stand-in captain Alex Baird with Scott Mason moving out to left back with Rick Gleave making his first start since August 12th. West started very much the brighter of the two teams with Gary Lilley having the games first chance, firing a wicked shot wide from the edge of the area before Matt Eckersley hit a thunderous shot just over the bar from 30 yards with the goalkeeper well beaten. Gleave forced the Main keeper to palm his effort away, with Brocklehurst denied from close range before slicing a volley wide. Jerome Bryson, a constant source of distress for Rossington all afternoon connected with an overhead kick at the far post but lacked the power to direct it past the goalkeeper before Gleave went close again breaking through the Main defence and slotting his shot under the goalkeeper but seeing it cleared off the line by a Rossington defender. West got the breakthrough their attacking play deserved on 41 minutes when Gleave played in Brocklehurst after some good build up play and the centre forward made no mistake finishing low under the goalkeeper taking their one goal cushion in to the break. The second half was a much tighter affair with West making two early changes with Tre Baldwin-Willis and Lee Malkin replacing Brocklehurst and Adam Hilton. Baldwin-Willis was immediately into the action and doubled West’s lead on the hour mark when he outpaced the Rossington defence chasing a long ball and smashed it past the oncoming Main goalkeeper. West continued to dominate with Baldwin-Willis having a free kick well saved by the Main keeper after it went straight through the wall and both he and Bryson having shots just wide. With just five minutes left, Rossington who had been content with launching long balls for their captain and leading goalscorer Lee Holmes to chase were back into the game when West goalkeeper Jordan Hitchen, a spectator for much of the game, made a good save pushing a close range shot to his left but the rebound fell to the Rossington sub who tapped it into an empty net. The goal spurred on the visitors who would play the closing minutes against 10 men as the ever excellent Gary Lilley was sent off in stoppage time for a second yellow having conceded a free kick at the edge of his own penalty area. The subsequent free kick was curled wide and West held on to secure a place in the First round proper against Glossop North End at home on November 1st.

History

Barnoldswick Town

Formed in 1972 and named Barnoldswick United (1972), - so called due to being canny Yorkshiremen - had there had been a previous club named Barnoldswick United and they had outstanding debts the new club would have been liable for them. The field started out as a grazing meadow for cattle, after a lot of hard work, it is now the pitch we play on. The club had 2 teams playing in the Craven & District Football League in the early 1990's we joined the East Lancashire Football League again with 2 teams. The 2003/2004 season brought the amalgamation of Barnoldswick United (1972), Barnoldswick Park Rovers and Salterforth Juniors and we changed our name to Barnoldswick Town Football Club. We then ran 3 senior teams. In the late 1990's our 1st and 2nd teams joined The West Lancashire Football League, our 3rds staying in The East Lancashire Football League. It has always been in the club's constitution to get our ground up to the minimum standards of The North West Counties Football League and the 2009/2010 season saw us accepted into The North West Counties Football League, for our 1st and 2nd teams. We have 2 pitches one being floodlit plus a floodlit training pitch. Our club house can hold up to 120 people and can be hired out for functions. Our main sponsor is Silentnight Beds Ltd and the ground is named The Silentnight Beds Stadium. For the 2013/2014 season we will have 12 junior teams, 3 entering the East Lancashire Alliance and the remaining 9 in the North Valley League. In 2009/2010 our first season in The NWCFL saw us finish Runners up in Division 1 and finalists in the prestigious West Riding County Cup beating Guiseley who won promotion to the Conference North along the way. It was an interesting season as we only expected to hold our own and try to make sure we didn’t end up at the bottom of the league. Following on from our success in the 2009/10 season we went from just looking to avoid relegation in the Premier Division 2010/11 to astound ourselves by finishing a creditable 7th in the league, only suspensions and injuries we feel robbed us of a top three spot. The 2012/2013 season saw us finish 9th in the Premier Division and reaching a round further in The FA Vase. Our Reserves finishing 4th in their respective league, with players being selected for the first team squad showing we have strength and depth in the club. In March 2012 we achieved The FA Grade E. enabling the club to enter The Evostick League when finishing in a promotion position. The 2013/14 season was a little bit traumatic for the club, players leaving or not being available, unrest in the dressing room which led to poor performances on the field. The club parted with manager Paul Fildes replacing him with the current managerial team of Stewart Airdrie and James Gill. Off the field proved challenging as finances started to run a little low and it was a worry that the club may have to pull out of the NWCFL. However a rescue package was decided upon and Anne Wolfenden has come in and her business expertise is hopefully putting the club back on track. In June this year (2014) we achieved Charter Standard.

Stockport Sport 1 West 2 match report… West made it five consecutive away wins and six wins from seven, but were made to work hard for it from a spirited Stockport Sports side on a cold and wet night at the Stockport Sports Village. West manager Andy Nelson made three changes to his starting line-up recalling Christopher McDonagh, instating Tre Baldwin-Willis into the starting eleven with Lewis Schofield also returning from injury. The 3G surface meant that the game began at a frantic pace with neither side gaining a foothold in the game as possession was quickly exchanged hands in midfield. Stockport took the lead on 15 minutes after a ball was punted long by the home side, West goalkeeper Jordan Hitchen raced off his line to claim but Scott Mason tried to head into his hands cannoning the ball off the on-rushing keeper and Damiola Sadiq bundled the ball home from a yard out. The goal galvanised the home side who played the better in a first half without much incident with Gary Lilley registering West’s first attempt on target in the 38th minute. On the stroke of half time West could have had a penalty as Lewis Schofield was bundled over inside the area but the referee had deemed it to happen just outside it. Scott Mason’s curled free kick over the wall forced the Sports keeper into an excellent save at his near post and the home side deservedly led at the break 1-0. Whatever the team talk at half time worked as a galvanised West came out for the second half and immediately levelled as a wicked Lewis Schofield cross from the left found Tre Baldwin-Willis unmarked at the far post, however he miskicked it and the poor Sports fullback was unable to prevent himself from forcing it home. West almost immediately took the lead as Rick Gleave was hauled down on the edge of the area having skipped past his man, Mason stepped up again and this time cannoned his free kick off the cross bar. West took the lead on the hour mark as McDonagh broke the offside trap and poked his shot past Buckley-Smith in the Sports goal to turn the game around. The home side would not give in though and whilst West rang the changes replacing Lewis Schofield and Tre Baldwin-Willis with Adam Hilton and Jerome Bryson looking to counter on the break. The, as ever, industrious Gary Lilley fired a shot from range into the keeper’s hands with Bryson also shooting just wide from a tight angle. Despite Stockport firing a dangerous cross into the hands of Hitchen at the death West held on firmly to secure the points and lift them to 14th place in the table. AFC Liverpool 3 West 1 match report… West travelled to Marine FC and lost 3-1 to AFC Liverpool in a scoreline that did not reflect the balance of the match. With Gary Lilley rested, manager Andy Nelson re-called Scott Jones into the starting line-up for the first time since early September with Adam Hilton coming in for Tre BaldwinWillis on the left side of midfield. West almost had the lead after 60 seconds when the AFC Liverpool goalkeeper failed to deal with a wickedly whipped in low cross along his six yard box and it fell to Lewis Schofield who couldn’t take advantage, hitting the side netting with the entire goal at his mercy, albeit from a very tight angle. Christopher McDonagh almost punished the Liverpool defence again when he was released down the middle with a wonderfully weighted through ball but this time the AFC Liverpool goalkeeper was quick of his line and just able to prevent the goal. Immediately at the other end AFC Liverpool had a shout for a penalty turned down in almost similar circumstances as Jordan Hitchen in the West goal raced off his line but the Liverpool forward hit the deck in a collision which the referee waved away. On 14 minutes it was 1-0 to AFC Liverpool as Steve Torpey pinged a wonderfully cross field pass to the full back Mahama who raced down the right and fired his cross in low and was tapped in from a yard out by Cox. At the other end McDonagh responded almost immediately heading over a wonderfully curled in Adam Hilton cross from six yards out. On 25 minutes, West deservedly levelled as excellent build up play from Lewis Schofield feed the ball to Matt Eckersley who played a sublime chipped pass to Scott Mason at the edge of the area who finished coolly into the bottom right hand corner. West continued to push, looking to take the lead into the break, with McDonagh again going close trying to force home a difficult chance after a Lewis Schofield cross. Adam Hilton almost converted with a great effort from a narrow angle, forcing the keeper into a low save to his right but the referee awarded a goal kick. On the stroke of half time West almost entered the break with the lead as the irrepressible Rick Gleave, who had an excellent game, almost robbed the AFC Liverpool goalkeeper of the ball on the goal-line. The second half started in the same manner as the first half with both sides having chances at either end as Hitchen first held a AFC Liverpool free kick well and then comfortably stopping a long range effort. However the warning signs were there for West as another cross along the six yard line was almost tapped home by Liverpool but this time it was just out of reach by the centre forward. On 69 minutes West were punished again as a ball down the right found Cox, with West appealing for offside, cut inside, beat Callum Schofield who’d been drawn out wide and his low cross provided a tap in for Francis Barry. West rang the changes with Tre Baldwin-Willis and Anthony Potts replacing Hilton and Scott Jones respectively and West responded almost immediately with McDonagh forcing a save from the Liverpool goalkeeper. However the contest was ended on 78 minutes when Cox found himself oneon-one with Hitchen, the big goalkeeper collided with him at the edge of the area and was handed his marching orders much to the derision of the Liverpool committee. Matt Eckersley duly went in goal as Ronnie Morgan duly blasted the penalty down the middle to end the game as a contest. Credit to West as they continued to play their football as they had a shout of their own for a penalty turned down yesterday after Baldwin-Willis forced a brilliant finger tip save from the Liverpool goalkeeper from the edge of the penalty area before a world class tackle prevented McDonagh scoring the rebound. Final West sub Kieran Brocklehurst headed a difficult chance wide as West lost their cohesion with 10 men as the Liverpool were limited to half chances but any further damage would have been harsh on West whose play had been excellent throughout the game.

A Brief History… West Didsbury and Chorlton FC, have come a long way in their 105 year history which began back in 1908 when the club was founded as Christ Church A.F.C. by Mr R F Hartley, a Sunday School Superintendent at the church on Princess Parkway, West Didsbury.

West played friendlies at first and then in the Manchester Alliance League until the First World War 1914. After the War the club joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League for the 1920/21 season and had to change its name to West Didsbury AFC, as that League did not permit a name suggesting association with any other body. The club was placed in Divisions 1 and A, staying in the top flight for 25 seasons. The first honours were double runners up in Div 1 and Rhodes Cup in 1922/23, and the club remained in the L+C League until 2006, winning many honours and providing 4 League Presidents along the way. The home ground from before 1914 until the mid 1980’s was Christie Playing Fields, and then the owners, Manchester and Salford Playing Fields Society, gave the club notice to quit having decided to sell off the land for commercial development – now ironically called ‘Christie Fields’ office park. After several years’ nomadic existence searching for a new home, the club acquired the redundant and overgrown Recreation Ground at Brookburn Road in 1996, and began to restore this to active use and develop a vision for a community club. This was down to the hard work of a core of players and Committee who refused to let the club fold. Work was completed in time to start the 1997-98 season using excellent new changing rooms and clubhouse facilities aided by a Lottery grant, new sponsors and members’ fundraising, but without a penny from the Playing Fields Society sale proceeds. Further name change followed in 2003 to reflect the new location in Chorlton and the club was then elected to the Manchester League in 2006. In 2007/8 West won its first Manchester League silverware lifting the Murray Shield in the last game of our centenary year. That team was the nucleus of the previously successful junior team and the following season 2008/09 West just missed promotion to the Premier Division and again reached the Murray Shield Final. won their League. With a new management team led by Andy Nelson, 2009/10 was very successful and honours spread throughout the club. The 1st team won the Murray Shield (the third consecutive year in the final) and was league runners-up. The reserves won the Bridgewater League Cup and the U17 Youth team won their League.

In 2010/2011 the 1st team won the Manchester League First Division title in style with a fantastic 65 points out of 72 possible. This ranks as one of the highest points totals per game in Manchester League history dating back over a century. The clubs reserve team and youth teams also had terrific seasons, resulting in promotion and for the second year reaching the Bridgewater Cup Final. The Youth team reached yet another final where they were just pipped to the trophy by New Mills. The Veterans were runners up in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans League and then started a second veterans team such was the interest in the club. Plans were also made to formally integrate junior football as the club Vision is to be a FA Charter Standard Community Club, playing at the highest possible level it can whilst remaining financially viable. Further improved saw floodlights erected in 2011 to meet FA requirements and West competed in the FA Vase for the first time in 2011-2012 as a Step 7 club. The over 45’s team again chipped in with Cheshire Veterans league silverware. 2013-14 saw the club meet a number of challenges on and off the field by recovering from a series of early season setbacks and defeats in August to consolidate with a very creditable 12th place league finish. Two new stands were installed to improves the spectator facilities, new grass pitches and youth teams were added as part of the long term development plan, whilst remaining as a volunteer run, ‘not for profit’ club. The other historic milestones achieved during the season were the 2-0 home victory over Abbey Hey in the club’s first ever appearance in the FA Cup followed by a 2-1 first ever FA Vase victory away at NCEL Rossington Main near Doncaster in mid September. This season the club hosts Brighouse Town from the Evo Stik league in the FA Cup at the end of August having been given a walk by the FA against NWCFL new club Cammell Laird 1907.
