Bootle FC
WELCOME This afternoon we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Bootle FC to The Recreation Ground for their first ever visit. Bootle are a club with an impressive history and pedigree and we look forward to an opportunity to reverse the early season defeat at Bootle at a time when we were trying to find our feet in the Premier Division. Last season we pushed Bootle close in the League Challenge Cup losing to a debatable late penalty so hopefully it’s third time lucky today as we look to maintain the impetus from the last week’s results. October was an extremely hard month in many ways with Andy unable to start the same team twice as a result of unfortunate injuries and some non availability. If fact our only joy so far in the league then was a point from a home game against Alsager; which should have been three on the balance of play and chances created. As things stand at present, whilst we are still too close to the foot of the table for comfort, there have been encouragements in some recent performances and we have also been fortunate to be able to strengthen the squad with new signing, Graham Kay as well as seeing the return of Callum and Scott Jones. We now have only the league to focus on following the AFC Liverpool cup exit in our last home game. That game was typical of the opening game against them with a scrappy first half, a 46th minute equaliser followed by 20 minutes domination and missed chances and then 15 minutes of self destruct through mistakes and poor judgments all over the park. The match officials commented ‘thought you were going to win that when you got level’ and ‘5-1 was no reflection of the balance of play’. It is testament to the character of the squad that we bounced back from that set back with a very determined and controlled display away at Colne where we were good value for the thumping 4-0 away win. This was followed up by a really gritty second half showing away at AFC Liverpool when we came back from a 2-0 deficit to get a thoroughly deserved point and at the end the home side were hanging on as we went all out for a victory. This afternoon is another big test but with the talent and strength of character of the squad we have another chance to keep our season back on track as we look to consolidate a place in this tough Premier Division. GOOD NEWS – PLANNING PERMISSION FOR NEW FACILITIES Last week we had a visit from the representatives of the NWCFL and the FA following our promotion from Division 1 last season. In order to meet the national Step 5 requirements we need to have covered seating for 100 and covered standing for another 100 spectators. These further improvements require planning permission and over recent months we have twice held meetings with immediate neighbours to explain and share our plans and building designs and get their views before we applied for planning permission. The planning department also suggested we include anything else we might need in the immediate future and so plans to extend the clubhouse will provide a new committee room and catering kitchen. Planning permission was granted on 24th October for the clubhouse extension and additional covered standing areas and temporary permission to April 2017 for a modular steel 50 seater spectator stand pending construction of the permanent clubhouse extension. MORE WORK! This means we will be fundraising for both the new stands and also replacement dug outs. We will start work shortly on the new covered standing area at the west end of the ground and then install the new 50 seater stand alongside the car park, which will be slightly extended. Please bear with us as we proceed with this work over the coming months. We greatly appreciated your patience when we installed the new pitch rail and hard standing on the southern boundary of the ground and as the new grass banking has become established we’ve had many positive comments about how well the ground now looks following removal of the old concrete post and panel fence which had become a graffiti wall. We will have the full plans on display in the clubhouse and provide you with an information leaflet shortly. Thanks for your support today and don’t forget you can keep in touch with all our news at: www.clubwebsite.co.uk/westdidsburychorlton/ Rob Turley The front cover picture: Alex Baird in action. Our thanks to Mike Fryer for providing photos again this season for the web and programme.

View from the Dugout October has been a very difficult and challenging month for all concerned at West Didsbury & Chorlton. I had hoped that after a terrific September that we would really kickstart our season but unfortunately due to a combination of factors ,several which have been out of our control, we find ourselves staring at the wrong end of the table. Fortunately for us, November started with a terrific 4-0 win at Colne. The pitch had a huge slope and conditions were horrendous but the team we fielded was as strong as we’ve fielded all season and we were rewarded with a win even if the floodlights failing in the last 5 minutes gave us a little scare. I was really pleased to see Tommy Walsh get on the scoresheet as he is a player who has been with us at every level since the 1st Division of the Manchester League 4 years ago. We faced Bootle at their ground back in August and had a disaster of an afternoon losing 0-5 when we made all manner of mistakes and were punished for every one of them. Bootle taught us a harsh lesson early on and it was clear then the quality they had in their team and that they would spend the majority of the season at the top end of the table. I am confident that we have learnt a lot from that game and today we will give them a tougher test. Richmond Botchey is the interview in today’s programme and as usual I am asked to touch on my thoughts of him. First and foremost of Botchey is his attitude and desire to play football. He is a genuine team player who has happily played in several positions already this season and figured out each time how to contribute to the team. He was been identified, correctly, as a big threat by most of the teams we’ve played and been on the receiving end of the ‘treatment’ time and again but not once has he ever reacted or complained and has simply got on with it. Botchey has worked hard to improve all aspects of his game and I know that the supporters get excited at the prospect of watching him in a West shirt and I’ve been pleased with his early contribution so far. Finally I would like to welcome the players, officials and supporters of Bootle FC to this evening’s game. Andy Nelson We are on the lookout for Club Helpers. CAN YOU HELP? Our club is dependent on the time and effort of volunteer helpers who act as club officials, manage and staff the bar and clubhouse on match days, produce the match day programme and undertake a host of other tasks around the clubhouse and grounds. First Team Match Report… Tuesday 22nd October: West 1 Glossop North End 3 Glossop arrived fresh from a 7-0 FA Vase triumph and as we kicked off the crowds were still coming in for our best midweek attendance so far. West started brightly with Lee Malkin breaking clear in the first minute only to find the keeper from an acute angle. 5 minutes in it was Glossop’s turn when Bailey was clean through one on one only to be denied by Ben Simpson’s feet. West grew into the game and began to keep the ball much better, and after 14 minutes a free kick was hooked clear and from the follow up Lee Makin shot high over the bar. Glossop looked dangerous and Bailey had another chance which he put high over the bar into the stop netting after 18 minutes. West then went ahead after 23 minutes when Tre received the ball wide on the right and turned quickly to fire high across and beyond the keeper into the top corner. At last we had scored again and that goal gave us more confidence. Two minutes later and the Glossop keeper had another let off and after 38 minutes a great ball from Graham Kay found Callum Jones who hit a tremendous right foot drive which went inches wise with the keeper rooted to the spot in the centre of the goal. That was the last serious action of the first half as West turned round well worth the advantage. Glossop upped the tempo straight from the resumption and played with greater intensity and pace. On 47 minutes a very dubious free kick was awarded just outside the area but the end result was emphatic as Bailey stepped up to score one of the best free kicks ever seen on this ground, curling the ball over the wall and just inside the intersection of cross bar and upright. Glossop were a new team after that and 15 minutes later it was that man Bailey again. This time he picked the ball up on the right flank and began moving across the field just outside the area as West retreated to cover but failed to close him down. Bailey took his chance and fired home a screamer to make it 2-1 to the visitors with 28 minutes remaining. West struggled to get back in the game and things got worse after 77 minutes when Kilheeney added a third and Glossop looked secure, apart from a goalkeeping fumble late on and a great effort from Richmond Botchey from 20 yards which flew just past. This game was evidence if we ever needed it of just how valuable it is to have a consistent goal scorer and Bailey showed why he is the leading league marksman with a clinical display when two strikes out of nothing turned the game and the result. On the positive side we had a good attendance of 126 and some entertaining moments in the clubhouse after the final whistle.

First Team Match Reports‌ Saturday 26th October: West 1 AFC Liverpool 5 It was a game that bore an uncanny similarity to the opening fixture of the season against the same opposition when we turned round a goal down, equalised early in the second half, dominated for 20 minutes and missed two gilt edged chances and ultimately lost a game we could have won but for some glaring errors at each end and some basic inability to retain the ball and pass to a player in the same coloured shirt. To rub salt in the wound, the match officials [who were very good] then departed for their drive back to Bradford and Sheffield saying how the result did not reflect the match and that they were sure on another day we would have won. The difference between the teams at the interval was single goal when an ambitious but careless pass across midfield in our half was easily intercepted by AFC Liverpool full back Buckley who steamed forward and shot across Booth for a 10th minute opener. This followed a fairly bright opening spell when West had an early chance blocked in the 6 yard box, but was followed by a further 30 minutes stalemate before West managed another effort on target. Half time 0-1. On 46 minutes Tre Baldwin Willis broke clear down the right flank and cut inside along the goal line before pulling the ball back for Dan Jones to finish well an open his account for West with the equaliser. Ten minutes into the second half and West should have been ahead - Tre broke clear again to send in another dangerous cross which found Scott Jones and Sam Mitten both unmarked but equally indecisive as the ball went between them and danger was averted. Then Michael Meikleham was unlucky after good interplay between Mitten and Jones before Mitten gave way to Tommy Walsh. AFC L then found themselves back in front when an attempted clearance by Ross Booth hit substitute Morgan and rebounded into an empty net. West could feel hard done by but a minute later had an excellent chance to equalise again when a Botchey rocket was parried by the keeper only for Tommy Walsh to hit the rebound straight back at him. Tommy was unlucky again soon after when he beat his man, turned another only to curl a left foot shot well wide. AFC L then sealed the result with a very good move and one two which made it 3-1 before adding another two goals to leave the final margin of difference an unreal reflection of the overall game. However, it does help when you can bring on a player like Morgan who showed some real quality in scoring a substitute’s hat trick. Another eventful but disappointing game meant West had exited 3 cup competitions in the space of 10 days leaving the focus for the rest of the season well and truly on surviving in the Premier Division of the league. On a personal note I really felt for our manager who was badly let down by some inept individual displays from several players who went missing for large periods of this game when others were giving their all for the white shirt.
Saturday 2nd November: Colne 0 West 4 West travelled to Colne in determined mood and despite an awful afternoon of rain, sleet, thunder and lightning, resulting in a temporary floodlight failure after 83 minutes, a great all round team effort secured all 3 points with a thumping 4-0 away win. West started off playing down the slope and began to take such control that Colne struggled to get out of their own half. Rick Gleave sent a left foot drive just wide and a Callum Jones 35 yard effort followed, fizzing just over the bar. A Steve Settle drive was just stopped by the keeper, a Richmond Botchey drive flew just wide as the early chances were all created by West who then deservedly went ahead on 21 minutes Botchey clipped another 25 yard effort into the top corner. WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC
Colne 0 West 4 report continued
Jones and Botchey had further more wayward efforts as Colne managed one half chance in the first period when their No10 broke through only to be blocked off by covering players. At the interval West were good value for the 1-0 advantage but still faced a tough second half challenge playing up the slope as the weather closed in. Colne looked a bit brighter and Ben Simpson saved well from a low shot after 52 minutes. This prompted a quick response from West as Tre Baldwin Willis played in Botchey who skinned his marker and cut along the goal line before laying the ball off invitingly to the incoming Rick Gleave who made no mistake from 15 yards. The third came from a Scott Mason free kick which Tommy Walsh headed on to Steve Settle who then held off the keepers challenge to enable Walsh to crash home from an acute angle to make it 3-0. As the thunder and lightning came closer two floodlight columns went off resulting in a 10 minute delay as the referee took the teams off the pitch as the lights were reset. When the game resumed West added a fourth as Mark Rogers fired home from the edge of the area after another good low cross from Tre Baldwin Willis
Wednesday 6 November: AFC LIVERPOOL 2, WEST 2 Our first trip to Valerie Park on a miserable damp and drizzling evening saw a tentative first half display give way to an exciting second half performance when the team showed real grit and determination to come back from 2-0 down early in the second half to draw 2-2. The opening stages saw little between the teams and it was 12 minutes before there was any attempt at either goal. Both defences seemed to be on top of their opposing forwards and it took a cruel deflection to give AFCL the opener after 26 minutes. It looked like Richmond Botchey had been clearly fouled on the edge of the area but the ref waved play on and a shot from 20 yards took a wicked deflection to give Simpson no chance. A couple of minutes later a Steve Settle effort was deflected away for a corner and on 30 minutes Tre Baldwin Willis sent Settle clean through only to fire just wide as the keeper advanced. Five minutes later and AFCL hit the bar from a rather harsh free kick award but at the interval West were still well in the game despite the 1-0 deficit. The early stages of the second period saw West pushed back and when a Kay clearing header went back across the edge of the area AFCL took full advantage to increase their lead. West refused to let their heads drop and after 50 minutes were right back in the game when the ball was chipped forward to Tommy Walsh who flicked it up to turn and volley the ball over the head of the bemused keeper. Game on!. Scott Mason then came on for the injured Botchey and as West pushed on the home side resorted to some industrial challenges resulting in 3 successive yellow cards over a 15 minute period. The turning point came during this spell when AFCL broke clear two on one through the centre of the West defence only for a certain goal to be ruled out for straying offside. West took full advantage of the let off and piled the pressure back on the home side. Several sweeping moves across the field and down the flanks had AFCL on the rack and from a swift counter attack Tre Baldwin Willis went sprinting into the penalty area only to be flattened by a badly timed tackle leaving the ref to point to the spot. Rick Gleave ignored the antics of the home keeper attempting distraction and he stepped up confidently to crash home the spot kick for the equaliser with 5 minutes left. That still left time for further chances when West could have won it but at the end of the night this was a well earned point through some terrific graft, a Walsh wonder goal and a refusal to give in against one of this season’s top sides.
Coming soon an update on the ground development programme‌ Photo shows the ground preparation for new pitches next season.

History… Bootle Original club The original Bootle F.C. were formed in 1880 and played at Hawthorne Road. In 1889-1890 Bootle became founder members of the Football Alliance. That season was their most successful as they finished league runners-up, reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, where they lost to Blackburn Rovers (0-7). When the Alliance merged with the Football League in 1892, Bootle became founder members of the new Second Division. However, despite a respectable 8th place final position, the club dropped out after one season (and were replaced by neighbours Liverpool) and seemingly disappeared due to financial problems. Football returned to Hawthorne Road when a new club, Bootle Athletic. was later formed with the new team initially playing in the Liverpool Leagues. In 1948 when they were elected to the Lancashire Combination 2, which they won at the first attempt. However, they struggled in the top-flight and after several tough seasons withdrew and folded during the 1953-54 campaign. Modern club In 1953, the current club was formed at first as Langton and played in the local leagues. After a very successful spell in the Liverpool County Combination (which they won on numerous occasions) the club reverted back to its better known identity of Bootle F.C. in 1973 and a year later joined the Lancashire Combination, which they won in 1976 and 1977. They then joined the Second Division of the Cheshire County League, which they won in their first season, and were promoted to the First Division. In 1982 the Cheshire County League was one of the leagues that merged to form the North West Counties League, which Bootle duly joined, becoming a member of the First Division. The club spent most of their time in the First Division until 2000 when they dropped into the Second Division. However, despite finishing 6th in 2002, the club dropped into the Liverpool County Combination. In 2006 they were elected back into Division 2 of the North West Counties League. In 2009 Bootle won promotion to the NWCL Premier Division and also won the Championship. The Bucks first season back in the Premier Divison was relatively sucessful finishing 3rd in the league and also a sucessful run in the FA Vase. Bootle’s attendance record was also broken when 1088 (previously 750) watched the Liverpool senior cup tie between the Bucks and Everton.

Player interview meet Richmond Botchey… Richmond Botchey Age: 22 Occupation: Sales Assistant Position: Wingback Previous Clubs: Langworthy Juniors, Manchester City, Salford Boys, Oldham Athletic, Rochdale, AFC Darwen, Ramsbottom United, Maine Road, Leigh Genesis, Stalybridge Celtic, Oldham Boro How did you begin to make your start in football? Well I began playing football when I was 10 after being introduced to the game by my friends in primary school and they then convinced me to join a local football team known as Langworthy Junior and I played for this team for about 5-6 years. During the ages of 10-16, I got trials for Manchester United and joined Manchester City as an under 12 player and enjoyed several months there but this was all new to me and I didn’t really know the insights of football and how far it could take you so I wasn’t fully committed which led to being released. From there, I played for Salford Boys and got picked up by Oldham Athletic and I enjoyed it playing over one and a half years there. I was playing for the under 16s at the age of 14 and was doing well but sadly got injured away on tour in Wales and got released not long after coming back from injury. The club were handing out the scholarship for the Youth team and since I hadn’t really played much that season, they decided not to take me on. I then went on trial at Rochdale for a short period but got offered the chance to go into non-league football with AFC Darwen and I just wanted to play the game so I went into non-league football at the age of 16. I played at Darwen for about eight months then moved onto Ramsbottom United for about two months but never got settled You had spells at Maine Road and Leigh Genesis? That’s when I went to Maine Road but it was just for one game and I then moved to Leigh Genesis. At Leigh genesis, I played under Lee Merricks and then Gary Flitcroft and this is where I met one of my team mates right now in Stevie Settle. I enjoyed a year or so at Leigh but due to transport commitments and other circumstances I had to leave. From there I stopped playing for a while but then I met an old manager of mine from Oldham Athletic who was working at Stalybridge Celtic and he asked me to go down. Unfortunately for me they were now becoming a full time team and I couldn’t commit to due to university. I played a few games for the reserves and then moved to Oldham Boro where I played for about 18 months. I was in and out of Oldham Boro because of university and wasn’t really playing much football until this season when I came to join the West Didsbury and Chorlton AFC revolution. You made your debut for Leigh Genesis in Nov 2008 having just turned 17 against Whitby Town in a 2-2 draw. It must have been a thrill to be playing in the Unibond Premier League at such a young age? To be honest with you, I never really understood the insights of football till about 18 so playing in the Unibond was not something I really I thought about. I was just happy to be playing the game I love in but it was a very good day for me to be playing in a new team and although we were struggling at the time as a team, we managed to put in a great performance and were very unlucky not to win the game. Looking back now I understand it a bit better, it was a great day for me I and one I wish I knew the full extent of at the time. You played 13 times that season as both a right back and a left back with notable performances in a 4-2 win against FC United and a man of the match performance against Guiseley in March 2009. Despite Leigh finishing the season second bottom and being relegated how good was the season for you personally? Well I hadn’t really had a settled team before joining Leigh due to certain circumstances but to be playing was great and the FC United game was an exciting game for me to be playing in front of a big crowd. It’s a game I still remember and will remember for a long time as it was great to beat a club of FC United’s stature especially considering our own situation at the time. Guiseley are now a conference north team so to play against a team like that was really great and to be seen as the man of the match in a big game at such a young age is a pleasure.

You joined Rochdale’s Academy. Is this where you first met Andy Nelson? Rochdale was just a short six week trial with the youth team but after my trial, the season had finished and the manager at that time left after the season so I never really knew what was going to happen and that’s when I decided to take my chances in non-league football. I first met Andy Nelson at Buile Hill High School as he was my PE teacher and taught us while we were on course to take our FA Level 1 coaching. How did you come to join West Didsbury? It’s quite funny actually because when I was at Oldham Boro we played against West Didsbury last season, I was injured and didn’t play but I saw Andy. I never knew he was the manager until then, I said hello but I thought he didn’t recognise me because he didn’t really seem like he knew who I was and obviously with him being my PE teacher in school, I had a feeling he may give me the chance to come down and see what I could bring to the team. I didn’t know how to get hold of him so I researched West Didsbury on Facebook, sent a message and thankfully my message got passed on as my little brother came home one day from school and said, “Mr Nelson wants me to give you this letter” and it had his number and email on it. I struggled to get hold of him at first because Andy never picks up his phone [laughs] but luckily one day he did pick up the phone and he was more than happy for me to come down. I’m very glad he gave me the opportunity and now I am just happy to be playing football, getting committed and dedicated and loving the game again. You were nominated as man of the match against AFC Blackpool? How much did you enjoy that performance? That was a good day for me because I had been in and out of the team and my main aim when I got to West Didsbury was to be in and around the squad by September, I didn’t really expect to be playing as we have a great team so to be able to be in the team and winning was great for me. Being awarded man of the match was an even greater bonus as I just want to help the team in any way I can if I can. Away to Wigan Robin Park you switched to the right wing where you tormented their left back? Is that your favourite position to play? I’ve never been a winger so I was surprised to be playing there but I gave it the best I could and I thought I did a satisfactory job. I know I could have done more and if that’s where the manager wants me to play; I’ll put the work in and try to adjust to the position. It’s crazy because I started off as a centre back, I had all my trials in that position but not being tall enough was my downfall. Most of the clubs such as Manchester City and Oldham Athletic pushed me to play right back but I never really adjusted as I was so used to playing centre back so I struggled. Every team seemed to play me right back so eventually I decided to try and adjust my position to right back and I felt I did that successfully a t Stalybridge and especially Oldham Boro. When I came to West Didsbury, Andy suggested that he would play me either left back or right back and left back wasn’t a position I’ve played often so I’m just really trying to do my best in the position for the team. It doesn’t really matter where I play as long as I can be beneficial to the team and now I really couldn’t say what my best position is but wherever I’m placed on the pitch I’ve given it my all. You are quickly becoming known for your mazy runs and long range shots. Do you have any particular favourite goals that you’ve scored in your career so far? You may not know this but I don’t score that many goals and it’s an aspect of the game which I am trying to improve. I work on it at training and even in my own time to get good at shooting as I prefer to have an all-round game rather than specialise. I want to improve anyway I can but obviously I have little niggles and being the physio room nearly every game and at training restricts how I play. My most memorable goal however, I would say would be my left foot volley against Norton for Oldham Boro about 2 years ago when one of our players took a free-kick, it came off a head in the wall and I literally just swung a foot at the rebound and it crept slowly past the far post. To be honest, it moved so slow I’m not quite sure how the keeper saved it but that would probably be my favourite goal as I don’t really score that many. Finally, have you got a favourite West moment of the season so far? Obviously I am new to the team and it is still early stages but it is going great so far for me and I am enjoying being part of the team but my favourite moment of the season so far is just being around the lads. The banter and the team spirit is the best I have experienced in my short career and of course the Pottsy song after a win is always a memorable moment. The team has had mixed results which kind of spoils it a bit but it’s a new team and a new experience for us all and we will get better as time goes on but just meeting the staff, the players and being part of the club and the revolution of West Didsbury is great.

Youth Team report‌ Saturday 2nd November: West Youth 10 Swinton JFC 1 It was a day for the brave and courageous with some extreme weather conditions right throughout as a strong cross wind, rain and hail stone and a bitter cold breeze threatened to disrupt the game. West dominated the ball and controlled possession in the early stages, but we had to wait until the 14th minute for a clear goalscoring opportunity. There were some wonderful exchanges of sharp and quick passes to get round the oppositions midfielders and then a through ball at the end for Miles Jones to run onto and calmly chip the advancing keeper from 16 yards to score. We had a slice of fortune with our 2nd as Marcus had a cross blocked by their defender in the penalty area, only to be return to him to cross perfectly again and allow a unmarked Camillo Chinamasa to strike it elegantly into the net. The goals kept on coming from Jardel Depeiaza with the next to add his name to the scoresheet followed by Joe Shaw heading home. Then before the end of the half Ebai Sam used his close control to cut the ball back from the by line for an advancing Chinamasa, to slam home a low drive into the centre of the net. It was 4-1 by half time as the match lived up to its goal-rich reputation with 46 goals having been scored by our lads in the team’s previous league and cup fixtures. In the second half we looked to re-assert our superiority and were quickly adding to our tally again when our wingbacks pierced the Swinton defence with Marcus Johny driving into the area from the right, before firing in a low shot into the keeper bottom right hand corner. Ebai Sam then made it six from close range with a tap in before Jones added his 2nd of the afternoon with a rasping shot from just inside the box. Danny Walker then got involved in the action, calling their keeper into action yet again with a 30 yard long range drive special crashing down off the crossbar onto the goal-line only for the keeper to touch it around his post! Depeiaza then curled in goal number seven from 15 yards out as he ran onto the ball and flicking it with the outside of his foot to lob the stranded Swinton goalkeeper caught backtracking into his goal. It was a quality finish that he must have got from his dad! The rout was completed with further goals from Schofield, Depeiaza again from the centre of the penalty and Shaw adding his 2nd 10 minutes from time from the edge of the box. Ian Depeiaza

WHAT’S OUR
STORY?
West Didsbury and Chorlton FC, have come a long way in their 105 year history which began back in 1908 when the club was founded as Christ Church A.F.C. by Mr R F Hartley, a Sunday School Superintendent at the church on Princess Parkway, West Didsbury.
West played friendlies at first and then in the Manchester Alliance League until the First World War 1914. After the War the club joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League for the 1920/21 season and had to change its name to West Didsbury AFC, as that League did not permit a name suggesting association with any other body. The club was placed in Divisions 1 and A, staying in the top flight for 25 seasons. The first honours were double runners up in Div 1 and Rhodes Cup in 1922/23, and the club remained in the L+C League until 2006, winning many honours and providing 4 League Presidents along the way. The home ground from before 1914 until the mid 1980’s was Christie Playing Fields, and then the owners, Manchester and Salford Playing Fields Society, gave the club notice to quit having decided to sell off the land for commercial development – now ironically called ‘Christie Fields’ office park. After several years’ nomadic existence searching for a new home, the club acquired the redundant and overgrown Recreation Ground at Brookburn Road in 1996, and began to restore this to active use and develop a vision for a community club. This was down to the hard work of a core of players and Committee who refused to let the club fold. Work was completed in time to start the 1997-98 season using excellent new changing rooms and clubhouse facilities aided by a Lottery grant, new sponsors and members’ fundraising, but without a penny from the Playing Fields Society sale proceeds. Further name change followed in 2003 to reflect the new location in Chorlton and the club was then elected to the Manchester League in 2006. In 2007/8 West won its first Manchester League silverware lifting the Murray Shield in the last game of our centenary year. That team was the nucleus of the previously successful junior team and the following season 2008/09 West just missed promotion to the Premier Division and again reached the Murray Shield Final. won their League.
With a new management team led by Andy Nelson, 2009/10 was very successful and honours spread throughout the club. The 1st team won the Murray Shield (the third consecutive year in the final) and was league runners-up. The reserves won the Bridgewater League Cup and the U17 Youth team won their League. In 2010/2011 the 1st team won the Manchester League First Division title in style with a fantastic 65 points out of 72 possible. This ranks as one of the highest points totals per game in Manchester League history dating back over a century. The clubs reserve team and youth teams also had terrific seasons, resulting in promotion and for the second year reaching the Bridgewater Cup Final. The Youth team reached yet another final where they were just pipped to the trophy by New Mills. The Veterans were runners up in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans League and then started a second veterans team such was the interest in the club. Plans were also made to formally integrate junior football as the club Vision is to be a FA Charter Standard Community Club, playing at the highest possible level it can whilst remaining financially viable. Further improved saw floodlights erected in 2011 to meet FA requirements and West competed in the FA Vase for the first time in 2011-2012 as a Step 7 club. Election to the NWCFL followed in June 2012 and the club had an incredible first season winning the Div1 Trophy, finishing in 3rd position after an amazing run in during March and April to secure promotion and also winning a guaranteed FA Cup place. The over 45’s team again chipped in with Cheshire Veterans league silverware. 2013-14 promises to be another testing season as the club adjusts to life in the NWCFL Premier Division, improves its spectator facilities, adds new grass pitches and youth teams as part of its development plan, and aims for long term consolidation and stability at this level whilst remaining as a volunteer run, ‘not for profit’ club.
