EDITORIAL
Glossop North End
WELCOME TO GLOSSOP NORTH END It’s a case of welcome and welcome back to various individuals from Glossop this evening and in particular to manager Chris Wilcox who has spent the best part of last season and the close season putting together a squad to challenge for promotion to the Evo Stik League by the end of this season. Prior to his appointment at Glossop Chris spent a few months assisting us as we secured promotion from Division One at the end of our first season in the League and won the Div 1 Trophy so he knows all about us and vice versa. Glossop are already the early season form side in this hugely competitive Premier Division, having won all of their opening 4 games. They sit top of the table going into tonight’s game with a stat of… For 11 Against 1, giving them an impressive goal difference of +10 already. However, we all know it’s a long old season and there are another 4 teams currently unbeaten and aiming for the same promotion target who will be pushing them all the way. After our great start of two wins from two we have suffered in the subsequent two home games with key moments pivotal to the results. Against Ashton Athletic we paid a heavy price for missing a penalty and some great chances when we were playing really well and then last week against Runcorn Town it looked like we were back on track when we took an early lead. An unfortunate penalty drew Runcorn level and they ran out deserved winners with a second half goal as our team looked disjointed and out of sorts from back to front. We now face further disruption with players returning from holiday as others take off which makes Andy’s job of fielding a settled squad virtually impossible. We had the same problem last year resulting in no points from the first 5 league games so at least we are a little better off now than at the same stage last season, although in truth we could and should have got at least another 3 points. Last season we had no joy against tonight’s visitors going down 0-1 at Glossop early in the campaign and then losing 0-2 at home in the return fixture when the difference between the two sides was a clinical goal scorer. The players, management, club officials and travelling support from Glossop are all very welcome here tonight and we look forward to an enjoyable encounter and wish them all a safe return to Glossop after the game. UPCOMING FIXTURES The quirk of 4 successive home games is about to be rectified as we travel to another stern away test at big promotion favourites, Runcorn Linnets, next Saturday at 3pm before a midweek trip down the M6 to Alsager next Tuesday evening at 7.45pm. If you are interested in travelling to either game please speak to Rob McKay at any time during this evenings game. THE MAGIC OF THE CUP Our next 1st team home game is the FA Cup tie against Brighouse Town, newly promoted to the Evo Stik League, on Saturday 30th August. Brighouse have had a tremendous rise through the two divisions of the Northern Counties East League in the past 6 years. It will be interesting to meet them and compare notes given that this is only our third season in the NW Counties and our second season in the FA Cup. We expect this to be a real challenge a bit like playing Glossop or Runcorn Linnets but by then we should have everyone back and barring injury and any more holidays Andy should be able to field his strongest squad. We will be promoting this game locally to try and generate a big crowd so why not bring a friend and swell the gate. In the meantime ENJOY THIS EVENING and we look forward to seeing you… Up for the Cup on Saturday 30th. Rob Turley Cover picture: Gary Lilley in action v Ashton Athletic

From the Dugout… Good evening and welcome to today’s game against the early NWCFL pacesetters Glossop North End. Chris Wilcox’s come side to Brookburn Road boasting a 100% record and fresh off a 3-0 win against AFC Blackpool in the FA Cup at the weekend. The hillmen start the season in emphatic fashion away to Bacup & Rossendale Borough winning 6-0 against what we have come to know as a tough side to play against. They followed that up with a pair of home wins 2-0 against our neighbours Maine Road and 1-0 against AFC Blackpool. Most impressively they then travelled to last season’s League Challenge Cup winners Ashton Athletic and returned with a 2-1 win against a side we’ve already seen how good they are. ‘Wilco’ and I have known each other for years and we remain good friends and whatever the score today we shall be enjoying a drink in the bar afterwards and a good conversation about football. We were fortunate to have the weekend off as we received a walkover in our FA Cup game against Cammell Lairds but we still put the ‘free weekend’ to good use as we used it as an opportunity for an inter-squad game. The game has given us the chance to look at one or two players, improve the fitness of others and experiment a little with plan B’s. Just as importantly it’s given us a chance to rest one or two players, although were just four games into the season, we’ve had four very physically draining games and we don’t want to wear anyone out before the end of August. We were showing signs of that against Runcorn Town last Tuesday in a game that was one for the hardcores! We scored a good goal early on when Lewis Schofield skipped past the full back and pulled back a cross for Jamie Tandy. After that we conceded a very soft penalty on our part and we looked short of ideas. To keep things in perspective we have 6 more points than we had this time last year and it took us 7 games to get to the same number of points. It shows us how far we’ve come in 12 months that we feel we should have taken more from our first four games. We’ve got several tough games coming up starting tonight and we will do our best to lift our game and take as many points as possible. Finally I would like to welcome the players, officials and supporters of Glossop North End and wish them a safe journey home after the game.
Enjoy the game. Andy Nelson WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC
RUNCORN RECOVER TO RUN OUT WINNERS Tuesday 12th August: West 1 Runcorn Town 2
WEST showed a few positional and personnel changes from the Ashton United game and started brightly in determined mood to put the last game behind them. The opening stages saw some really good possession and close control and after 5 minutes Lewis Schofield made a great run down the left flank before cutting the ball back for Jamie Tandy to convert and open his account as a WEST player. A couple of further half chances came and went as Runcorn looked very flat but then a long ball over the top saw a penalty awarded after 17 minutes when the Runcorn forward was adjudged to have been fouled by Ben Simpson. Runcorn’s Potter made it 1-1 but West then had another great chance to go ahead when Rick Gleave hit a drive from 20 yards which veered left and rebounded off the face of the post with the visiting keeper static. Runcorn began to get a grip on the game and by half time looked the better side as WEST wasted possession, tried too many Hollywood passes and began to look like a team that had forgotten the basics which had proved so effective in the opening games.
The second half was little better apart from a half chance from a Mason corner kick after 47 minutes when Settle flicked a back header on target and then Runcorn began to run the show in midfield and were unlucky not to go ahead after 50 minutes when a free header [again!] from a corner kick flashed just wide of the right hand post. The visitors took full advantage of increasing hesitancy from the normally solid WEST defence and took the lead after 65 minutes when a slick move released on the left from where Sean Breen cut a low angled shot past Simpson and into the bottom corner. The last phase of the game was very scrappy with both sides conceding several unnecessary free kicks and testing the referees patience. Two yellow cards for the visitors followed one for the irrepressible Gary Lilley but there was little threat to the Runcorn goal as WEST lacked any real penetration up front. The nearest to an equalising goal came a few minutes from time when Lee Malkin robbed the casual visiting keeper well out of his goal, and set up the oncoming Poizer’s whose shot was blocked by a defender and cleared away to safety. A series of late WEST corners also came to naught and the game ended with Runcorn deserved winners and West looking rather forlorn and disjointed with a number of things to put right before the next game against leaders Glossop.

History…
Glossop North End
It’s a classic quiz question — which is the smallest town in England to have been the home of a top division football club? The answer — Glossop. Of course, it’s a long time since that 1899/1900 season but the Hillmen (or Hillsmen, as they were known back then, in honour of owner Sir Samuel Hill-Wood) supporters never forget the proud history of the club. However more recently they were given some more moments that they will talk about in the town for years to come and are hopeful of providing a few more. Founded in 1886, Glossop North End began by playing friendly amateur matches. They entered the North Cheshire League in 1890 and introduced professional players in 1894. Their Chairman and benefactor was local cotton magnate Sir Samuel Hill-Wood who later left to become Chairman of Woolwich Arsenal. In 1898, on their third application, they were admitted to the Football League. In their first season, by finishing runners-up to Manchester City, they won promotion to the Football League Division 1. Unfortunately, they spent just one year in the division, the best victory being a 3-0 result against Nottingham Forest. Glossop played in League Division 2 until the end of the 1914/15 season, In 1908/09 reaching the quarter finals of the FA Cup where they lost to Bristol City in a replay. They ceased playing during the latter part of the First World War but were reformed by Oswald Partington MP, who had been club captain in the 1890’s. Between the wars the club played in the Lancashire Combination and the Manchester League, of which they were champions in 1927/28. They also won the Gilgryst Cup on three occasions. Matches again ceased during the Second World War, Glossop rejoining the Manchester League afterwards. They won the Gilgryst Cup for a fourth time in 1949. In 1955 they moved from their original ground at North Road to the present home at Surrey Street. Since then they have played in the Lancashire Combination, the Manchester and the Cheshire Leagues before becoming founder members of the North West Counties League in 1982. Glossop have spent most of the time in the First (now Premier) division, although much of it was spent at the lower end fighting against relegation, whilst the club itself fought for survival, victim of a criminally corrupt owner in the 1980s. It was only the hard work of board members and supporters kept the club afloat after the disgraced regime. There was a little success — the club was Manchester Premier Cup winners in 1997 and 1998, and Derbyshire Cup winners in 2000-01. More recently though, things have improved for the Hillmen. 2008/09 saw the biggest day in the history of the club after Steve Young & Terry Hincks’ side embarked on a terrific FA Vase run which saw North End reach the final at Wembley. They played in every single round of the competition leaving some fantastic memories for supporters along the way... none more dramatic than the 123rd minute equalizer in the semi-final against Chalfont St. Peter. This led to a penalty shootout where the Hillman seized the opportunity to head down Wembley Way. Whilst the final saw a disappointing result — losing 2-0 to Whitley Bay — the run awakened interest in the Hillmen throughout the town. There is now a thriving Supporters Club, which has funded makeovers to the ground and helped generate interest in the club home and away. This forms part of a more dramatic overhaul that has seen a refurbishment of changing rooms, a new clubhouse, a new covered standing area and new perimeter fencing. Ground grading for the league above has been achieved too and the club feels it is ready to progress up the pyramid. Manager Chris Willcock is the man appointed to the task, and he had a very exciting first season in charge in 2013-14, taking the club to a 3rd place finish – it’s highest in the NWCFL – and a Derbyshire Senior Cup Final. Optimism is high for 2014-15 and everyone at the club is hopeful that Glossop North End can now realise plans for an exciting future as a club at the heart of the community.

Manchopper…in Barnoldswick It’s the opening day of the North West Counties season! It’s the beginning of August, the height of summer, it’s warm, it’s sunny, it’s…. ABSOLUTELY POURING IT DOWN! Regardless of the weather, I had decided a few weeks earlier to take up the offer of a seat on the West coach into the far reaches of Lancashire…or maybe Yorkshire. I arrived about 11am at The Bowling Green in Chorlton Green just around the corner from the club’s ground. After taking seats on the coach, along with Dan Watkinson who I’d enticed into coming along to - though he may have been regretting it at this point, as the rain became heavier, we were setting off in the driving rain only a few minutes later than planned thanks to Scott Mason. After travelling along the motorway’s and A-roads, thanks to the satnav, we turned down some winding country lanes and inched past some startled looking cows (or whatever cows do when surprised) having their Saturday disturbed by a coach full of footballers. We pulled down a small access road following the sign for “Barnoldswick Cricket & Football Club” which led to the ground and its car park. Whilst running for shelter in the ground through puddles the size of Lake Geneva, a West player exclaimed to me “It’s a great day for it isn’t it?” “I don’t envy you one bit” I replied, whilst thinking there may not be a game at all as the rain continued. However, the pitch was in great condition and there was to be zero problems for the game. Sitting in the clubhouse, a Barlick committee guy came round collecting entrance fees (£5) and I was kindly given a programme by a West official. The players were all still milling around at his point, and the rain had begun to abate by the time they exited towards the changing rooms. The clubhouse itself is warm and smart, with hark-backs to their history adorning the walls and mirrors emblazoned with the name “Barnoldswick United”. Looking through the clubhouse windows, I noticed three stands, two of which were seated and one which also houses the tunnel and changing rooms, sit on either side of the clubhouse. On the other, a fantastic stone built covered terrace adorns the right hand side of the pitch, where the dugouts are also situated. Opposite this is a fence, which splits the cricket and football fields, and the opposite end to the clubhouse features hard standing. With the sun now out, the game kicked-off and West took the lead through a superb 20-odd yard free kick from Scott Mason. Even better was, as the free-kick was being lined-up, Dan pulled his phone out and said confidently, “I’m just going to film the goal…” as it sailed into the top corner yards from where he was standing. The lead lasted half an hour, when James Gill equalised from close range, just three minutes later, the Barlick right-back needlessly fouled a West attacker and was given his marching orders. Rick Gleave converted the penalty to give West their lead back and Jerome Bryson had a goal ruled out for offside, but 10-man Barlick hit back before the break, Joel Melia being played in on the right, and firing across ‘keeper Jordan Hitchen to make it 2-2 at half time. I’d just finished off a wonderful pasty, peas and gravy (with real crockery!) as the second half began and decided the stone stand had to be the place to watch it from and the rest of the ground agreed with me. Despite the earlier conditions the cricketers were even out making a belated start. West dominated the second period against their hosts, with Gleave again scoring after good work on the right flank by Bryson presented him the chance, before winger Bryson himself wrapped up the win with 15 minutes left to cap a fine individual display. After the game, all people and non-league dogs made their way to the clubhouse and with rain returning to the skies once again, we departed the friendly club, and I have no hesitation in saying I’ll be returning at some point in the future. I really did find everyone there friendly and welcoming, which is why I, personally, enjoy Counties football more than any other level and is a great advert for nonleague. George Cheetham

A Brief History… West Didsbury and Chorlton FC, have come a long way in their 105 year history which began back in 1908 when the club was founded as Christ Church A.F.C. by Mr R F Hartley, a Sunday School Superintendent at the church on Princess Parkway, West Didsbury.
West played friendlies at first and then in the Manchester Alliance League until the First World War 1914. After the War the club joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League for the 1920/21 season and had to change its name to West Didsbury AFC, as that League did not permit a name suggesting association with any other body. The club was placed in Divisions 1 and A, staying in the top flight for 25 seasons. The first honours were double runners up in Div 1 and Rhodes Cup in 1922/23, and the club remained in the L+C League until 2006, winning many honours and providing 4 League Presidents along the way. The home ground from before 1914 until the mid 1980’s was Christie Playing Fields, and then the owners, Manchester and Salford Playing Fields Society, gave the club notice to quit having decided to sell off the land for commercial development – now ironically called ‘Christie Fields’ office park. After several years’ nomadic existence searching for a new home, the club acquired the redundant and overgrown Recreation Ground at Brookburn Road in 1996, and began to restore this to active use and develop a vision for a community club. This was down to the hard work of a core of players and Committee who refused to let the club fold. Work was completed in time to start the 1997-98 season using excellent new changing rooms and clubhouse facilities aided by a Lottery grant, new sponsors and members’ fundraising, but without a penny from the Playing Fields Society sale proceeds. Further name change followed in 2003 to reflect the new location in Chorlton and the club was then elected to the Manchester League in 2006. In 2007/8 West won its first Manchester League silverware lifting the Murray Shield in the last game of our centenary year. That team was the nucleus of the previously successful junior team and the following season 2008/09 West just missed promotion to the Premier Division and again reached the Murray Shield Final. won their League. With a new management team led by Andy Nelson, 2009/10 was very successful and honours spread throughout the club. The 1st team won the Murray Shield (the third consecutive year in the final) and was league runners-up. The reserves won the Bridgewater League Cup and the U17 Youth team won their League.
In 2010/2011 the 1st team won the Manchester League First Division title in style with a fantastic 65 points out of 72 possible. This ranks as one of the highest points totals per game in Manchester League history dating back over a century. The clubs reserve team and youth teams also had terrific seasons, resulting in promotion and for the second year reaching the Bridgewater Cup Final. The Youth team reached yet another final where they were just pipped to the trophy by New Mills. The Veterans were runners up in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans League and then started a second veterans team such was the interest in the club. Plans were also made to formally integrate junior football as the club Vision is to be a FA Charter Standard Community Club, playing at the highest possible level it can whilst remaining financially viable. Further improved saw floodlights erected in 2011 to meet FA requirements and West competed in the FA Vase for the first time in 2011-2012 as a Step 7 club. Election to the NWCFL followed in June 2012 and the club had an incredible first season winning the Div1 Trophy, finishing in 3rd position after an amazing run in during March and April to secure promotion and also winning a guaranteed FA Cup place. The over 45’s team again chipped in with Cheshire Veterans league silverware. 2013-14 saw the club meet a number of challenges on and off the field by recovering from a series of early season setbacks and defeats in August to consolidate with a very creditable 12th place league finish. Two new stands were installed to improves the spectator facilities, new grass pitches and youth teams were added as part of the long term development plan, whilst remaining as a volunteer run, ‘not for profit’ club. The other historic milestones achieved during the season were the 2-0 home victory over Abbey Hey in the club’s first ever appearance in the FA Cup followed by a 2-1 first ever FA Vase victory away at NCEL Rossington Main near Doncaster in mid September. This season the club hosts Brighouse Town from the Evo Stik league in the FA Cup at the end of August having been given a walk by the FA against NWCFL new club Cammell Laird 1907.
