Glossop North End

WELCOME TO GLOSSOP and THE FA VASE This afternoon is a big day and another historic landmark at ‘WEST’. That’s because this is our first home tie in the first round of the FA Vase and what better incentive to pull out all the stops that with the arrival of former FA VASE finalists Glossop North End. Glossop are a club with long and proud history as you will read elsewhere in this programme and their feats in reaching Wembley a few years back had the whole town and wider area buzzing with excitement. Whether our feat in drawing then at home this afternoon has set Chorlton buzzing remains to be seen but this is the sort of game which shows how far we have progressed in recent years and we look forward to putting in a good performance in front of what we hope will be one of our biggest crowds of the season. Not so long ago, in the 2008-09 season, Glossop reached the final of the FA Vase where they lost 2–0 to Whitley Bay from the Northern League First Division. Due to the feat of getting to Wembley, Premier League giants Arsenal, with whom they retain connections due to current Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood’s grandfather Sir Samuel Hill-Wood having owned and bankrolled Glossop during their run in the Football League, invited them to use their state-ofthe-art training ground during their stay in London, to prepare for the final. As Glossop were travelling down to Wembley in May 2009 we were starting out on a rather different journey and exploring what was involved in applying to progress from the Manchester League to the North West Counties League. Today we start as equals in the same NWCFL Premier Division of the National League system and with all to play for on this historic occasion for our club. This is only the second season we’ve competed against Glossop and apart from the recent one sided midweek encounter, when we had our recurring midweek problems in the run up and warm up to the game, the other 3 games have been relatively close. Glossop have won those also 1-0, 2-0 and 1-0 so its about time we broke our goal scoring duck against ‘The Hillmen’. Last time we mentioned manager Chris Wilcox who joined Glossop at the start of last season after a spell assisting us in the latter stages of our promotion run to the Premier Division in 2012-13 and he and Andy will again be pitting their wits against each other albeit with rather different resources to call on. Last season we had no joy going down 0-1 at Glossop early in the campaign and 0-2 at home in the return fixture when the difference between the two sides was a clinical goal scorer. We’re not the only team to find it hard to pierce the best defence in the league but on our day we can trouble and beat anyone, so let’s all get behind Andy and the team today as they go all out for our first win determined to keep involved in this season’s FA Vase. Glossop and their supporters are very welcome visitors this afternoon, not least because of the Hillmen’s appetite for Monica’s hot pies, so we look forward to selling out, to an enjoyable game and wish them all a safe return to Glossop after the game. Rob Turley If you arrived early enough you will have seen the opening of The Rob Turley Stand named in honour of the service that Rob has given to West’s as a prolific marksman and in many other capacities at the club. Please refer to the article further on in the programme where Glyn Meacher our Chairman reflects on Rob’s 40 years of service.

From the Dugout… Hello and welcome back to Brookburn Road for today's game against Glossop North End in the FA Vase 1st Round. We had a disappointing time here on Tuesday night when we dished up a lacklustre performance against a resolute Abbey Hey side who are enjoying a good run in form. This wasn’t helped by what is becoming a familiar story recently as I had to select a team with several regular players unavailable. I was away last Saturday but was pleased to see we progressed in the Men United Cup competition in a entertaining 3-3 draw that went to extra time, before our 5 penalty takers delivered a full house with 5 strikes against First Division Ashton Town. We have now been drawn against Rochdale Town at home. I must say I was also pleased to hear about Steve Settle’s great 35 yard strike, that couldn’t go without a mention! It is good to meet up again with Glossop and their Manager Steve Willcock, ‘Wilco’ and I have known each other for years and we remain good friends and whatever the score today we shall be enjoying a drink in the bar afterwards and a good conversation about football. Finally I would like to ask that all supporters to please try and support the club with our upcoming bonfire, it’s a huge source of revenue for the club and we need you to help make it a success. Enjoy the Game. Andy Nelson

UPCOMING DIARY Tuesday 4th November If today’s game is drawn there will be extra time and if the scores are still level the replay will be at Glossop next Tuesday 4th November at 7.45pm. If not, we will have a home league game here at 7.45pm when our visitors will be CONGLETON TOWN. Next Friday 7th November is our Community Bonfire Event from 6.30pm. Next Saturday 8th November we are away at Bootle at 3pm with the reserves here at home and then, Tuesday 11th November we are away at Ramsbottom at 7.45pm in the Lancashire FA ChallengeTrophy. Saturday 15th November we are home to AFC Blackpool at 3pm which is also Oswald Road Day for our junior partner club.

Rob Turleys 40th anniversary at the club. It was at this years annual presentation awards that Rob casually mentioned that this was his 40th year at West Didsbury and the clubs wheels started in motion trying to to work out how we could commemorate such an achievement For those of us old enough to remember Rob as a player we can recall him being a prolific striker, who as well as having an eye for a a goal, can also remember his complete inability to pick a pass if any sort of goalscoring opportunity came his way!!! However, it is his off the field activities that everyone at the club owes him a significant vote of thanks for. Not just for the many roles he has served the club including being Chairman, President of the Lancashire and Cheshire Football League and his current ones of Club Secretary and Vice Chairman. Not just for his skill and expertise at both fundraising and knowledge of the planning system, which has enabled the club to both purchase and develop the facilities on this ground over the past 20 years Not just for his total commitment to the club, which resulted in Brian Cripps, the clubs last Chairman, who I had the honour of taking over from, nicknaming him Mr West Didsbury It is for all of these things, plus his vision and drive that has taken us from playing football played on rented pitches, to one where we own our own ground, have great plans for expansion and are competing at a level which would have been no more than a dream to anyone other than Rob for thirty plus years. We used to laugh when I was first on Committee, some 15 years ago, that Rob would only be happy when we were playing in the FA Cup, a feat we achieved last season. It is true to say that many other people have helped the club along the way, but no-one has done more than Rob, to help this 'little club' as Andy Nelson our current manager affectionately calls us, to develop the facilites here in order to both provide a platform for us to compete in the NWCFL, FA Vase and FA Cup and to become a true Community club, offering football to all ages. As a result, the Club Committee can see no better tribute to mark Robs 40 years at the club, than to name our first ever stand 'The Rob Turley Stand' in recognition of everything he has done for the club. West 0 Abbey Hey 1 match report… It was an all too familiar story for West as they took on an Abbey Hey side with several regular players missing from the starting line up. The visiting side started much the better with a high tempo long ball game in wet conditions and on a soft pitch. Abbey Hey, in a run of four games without defeat, rattled West in the opening minutes with the home side unable to retain any meaningful possession with Abbey Hey pressing every ball. They took the lead from the first meaningful attack as they won a corner from a miss-timed clearance from Callum Jones. The corner was whipped in and Christopher Hallows jumped up at the near post, unmarked, and headed into the far corner after 16 minutes. Abbey Hey almost doubled their lead when a shot from range, clattered the outside of the post and out for a goal kick. West attacking threat of the first half were limited to long range efforts from Gary Lilley, Scott Mason and Adam Hilton which were well held by the Abbey Hey goalkeeper, John McIlwaine. The first half came to a close with West goalkeeper forced into a brilliant save from close range from the Abbey Hey striker with the whole goal at his mercy. The second half didn't improve for West as Abbey Hey's long ball still continued to stifle them, with their lightning quick strikers content to chase everything, West's Steve Settle was the most likely threat, moving from the middle to the right but his cross/come shot found neither a team mate nor the net as time was running out for West. Tre Baldwin-Willis tried his look with a shot into the keeper’s hands from just outside the centre circle. It took to the last 15 minutes for West to gain a real sense of urgency to proceedings as Scott Jones replaced Adam Hilton and they tried to move the ball forward quicker trying to find Baldwin-Willis. They continued to push forward with Abbey Hey still dangerous on the break with Abbey Hey sub Brandon Zabaka having a golden chance to win the game in stoppage time, he rounded the keeper who did enough to put him off and his shot was blocked on the line. The best chance for West came in the dying seconds as the only real attacking move of the entire 90 minutes played in Steve Settle at the edge of the 6 yard box but was denied a certain goal by a world class tackle from Hallows. Abbey Hey contested the corner, for which captain Desmond Flanagan was booked for dissent, but Mason couldn’t find anyone on the end of his curled in set piece and time ran out for West. History…

Glossop North End

It’s a classic quiz question — which is the smallest town in England to have been the home of a top division football club? The answer — Glossop. Of course, it’s a long time since that 1899/1900 season but the Hillmen (or Hillsmen, as they were known back then, in honour of owner Sir Samuel Hill-Wood) supporters never forget the proud history of the club. However more recently they were given some more moments that they will talk about in the town for years to come and are hopeful of providing a few more. Founded in 1886, Glossop North End began by playing friendly amateur matches. They entered the North Cheshire League in 1890 and introduced professional players in 1894. Their Chairman and benefactor was local cotton magnate Sir Samuel Hill-Wood who later left to become Chairman of Woolwich Arsenal. In 1898, on their third application, they were admitted to the Football League. In their first season, by finishing runners-up to Manchester City, they won promotion to the Football League Division 1. Unfortunately, they spent just one year in the division, the best victory being a 3-0 result against Nottingham Forest. Glossop played in League Division 2 until the end of the 1914/15 season, In 1908/09 reaching the quarter finals of the FA Cup where they lost to Bristol City in a replay. They ceased playing during the latter part of the First World War but were reformed by Oswald Partington MP, who had been club captain in the 1890’s. Between the wars the club played in the Lancashire Combination and the Manchester League, of which they were champions in 1927/28. They also won the Gilgryst Cup on three occasions. Matches again ceased during the Second World War, Glossop rejoining the Manchester League afterwards. They won the Gilgryst Cup for a fourth time in 1949. In 1955 they moved from their original ground at North Road to the present home at Surrey Street. Since then they have played in the Lancashire Combination, the Manchester and the Cheshire Leagues before becoming founder members of the North West Counties League in 1982. Glossop have spent most of the time in the First (now Premier) division, although much of it was spent at the lower end fighting against relegation, whilst the club itself fought for survival, victim of a criminally corrupt owner in the 1980s. It was only the hard work of board members and supporters kept the club afloat after the disgraced regime. There was a little success — the club was Manchester Premier Cup winners in 1997 and 1998, and Derbyshire Cup winners in 2000-01. More recently though, things have improved for the Hillmen. 2008/09 saw the biggest day in the history of the club after Steve Young & Terry Hincks’ side embarked on a terrific FA Vase run which saw North End reach the final at Wembley. They played in every single round of the competition leaving some fantastic memories for supporters along the way... none more dramatic than the 123rd minute equalizer in the semi-final against Chalfont St. Peter. This led to a penalty shootout where the Hillman seized the opportunity to head down Wembley Way. Whilst the final saw a disappointing result — losing 2-0 to Whitley Bay — the run awakened interest in the Hillmen throughout the town. There is now a thriving Supporters Club, which has funded makeovers to the ground and helped generate interest in the club home and away. This forms part of a more dramatic overhaul that has seen a refurbishment of changing rooms, a new clubhouse, a new covered standing area and new perimeter fencing. Ground grading for the league above has been achieved too and the club feels it is ready to progress up the pyramid. Manager Chris Willcock is the man appointed to the task, and he had a very exciting first season in charge in 2013-14, taking the club to a 3rd place finish – it’s highest in the NWCFL – and a Derbyshire Senior Cup Final. Optimism is high for 2014-15 and everyone at the club is hopeful that Glossop North End can now realise plans for an exciting future as a club at the heart of the community.

THANK YOU TO JOHN COWLEY - A SPECIAL GUEST Our guest for this afternoon’s FA Vase game is JOHN COWLEY, who has just retired as registration secretary with the North West Counties Football League. John has given great service to the league and its member clubs over an incredible period of 32 years service. He has been extremely helpful to us as a club in recent years, firstly as a member of the ground grading team who advised the club on the improvements necessary to join the league, and subsequently in helping us get to grips with the various administrative tasks in player registration and match results over the past two and a half seasons. We are delighted that John has been able to join us this afternoon and there will be a short presentation to him before kick off with a small token of our appreciation for him to enjoy at his leisure. Please join with us in the traditional fashion as we have a round of applause to show John our appreciation of what he has done not just in helping this club, but for his 32 years dedicated service to the NWCFL. NWCFL League Table’s after games on Tuesday 28th October

WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

The Manchopper returns‌ Since my last piece for the programme, it has been a rather up & down period for West (nothing changes there then!), with us being successful in cup competitions and continuing our inconsistency in the league. In the cups, we have progressed in both we have competed in this month. Firstly we, once again, defeated NCEL side Rossington Main 2-1 in our FA Vase clash for the second time in two seasons, in a rather one sided game that we dominated. Our goals came from Kieran Brocklehurst & Tre, before a late strike combined with Gaz Lilley's late red made for a nervy finish. But we progressed, as you may have figured, or you wouldn't have been attending this game today. Secondly, we began our Men United Cup competition with an entertaining 3-3 draw at First Division Ashton Town. After a see-saw game, that saw us come from behind twice thanks to Chris McDonagh and Steve Settle's wonder strike (if only FIFA were watching), we led through Alex Baird's placed effort just after the break. Our lead didn't last though, and after extra time we went to penalties. West converted all of theirs to progress 5-4 on spot-kicks. As a result, we have been drawn against Rochdale Town who also progressed on penalties (at Hanley Town). In the league, we have struggled to gain consistency. Despite gaining wins against the struggling pairing of Stockport Sports (at the SSV) & Barnoldswick Town (here at the Rec), we have lost out against the high flying AFC Liverpool, where we were unfortunate to go down 3-1 after Jordan Hitchen was sent off after conceding a penalty at 2-1. After playing so well at the Merseysiders, we were convincingly thrashed at, in my opinion, the best side in the division and today's visitors, Glossop North End 6-0. Interestingly, both these defeats were sandwiched between the two victories, just underlining the fluctuating fortunes that West are experiencing this season. After a further 1-0 home reverse to the resurgent Abbey Hey this Tuesday just gone, we come to today. Hopefully, we can improve on the thrashing we were given a couple of weeks back at Surrey Street. However, we are under no illusions about how tough this game will be against the Wembley finalists from five years ago. But, if the magic of the FA Vase exists in any way, hopefully some can be sprinkled on Brookburn Road this afternoon. Somehow, I guess those of you supporting the Hillmen would rather this wasn't the case! Looking forwards, we are soon to be entertaining Congleton Town, in a restaging of our abandoned game a few weeks ago, after the floodlights failed, before again travelling to Merseyside to play Bootle and then we continue our Lancashire Trophy campaign with a trip to Evo-Stik Premier Ramsbottom United, who have began their season very strongly indeed. That game is on Tuesday the 11th November so, if you can, make the trip up! In the words of the Pet Shop Boys, GO WEST!!! George Cheetham

A Brief History… West Didsbury and Chorlton FC, have come a long way in their 105 year history which began back in 1908 when the club was founded as Christ Church A.F.C. by Mr R F Hartley, a Sunday School Superintendent at the church on Princess Parkway, West Didsbury.

West played friendlies at first and then in the Manchester Alliance League until the First World War 1914. After the War the club joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League for the 1920/21 season and had to change its name to West Didsbury AFC, as that League did not permit a name suggesting association with any other body. The club was placed in Divisions 1 and A, staying in the top flight for 25 seasons. The first honours were double runners up in Div 1 and Rhodes Cup in 1922/23, and the club remained in the L+C League until 2006, winning many honours and providing 4 League Presidents along the way. The home ground from before 1914 until the mid 1980’s was Christie Playing Fields, and then the owners, Manchester and Salford Playing Fields Society, gave the club notice to quit having decided to sell off the land for commercial development – now ironically called ‘Christie Fields’ office park. After several years’ nomadic existence searching for a new home, the club acquired the redundant and overgrown Recreation Ground at Brookburn Road in 1996, and began to restore this to active use and develop a vision for a community club. This was down to the hard work of a core of players and Committee who refused to let the club fold. Work was completed in time to start the 1997-98 season using excellent new changing rooms and clubhouse facilities aided by a Lottery grant, new sponsors and members’ fundraising, but without a penny from the Playing Fields Society sale proceeds. Further name change followed in 2003 to reflect the new location in Chorlton and the club was then elected to the Manchester League in 2006. In 2007/8 West won its first Manchester League silverware lifting the Murray Shield in the last game of our centenary year. That team was the nucleus of the previously successful junior team and the following season 2008/09 West just missed promotion to the Premier Division and again reached the Murray Shield Final. won their League. With a new management team led by Andy Nelson, 2009/10 was very successful and honours spread throughout the club. The 1st team won the Murray Shield (the third consecutive year in the final) and was league runners-up. The reserves won the Bridgewater League Cup and the U17 Youth team won their League.

In 2010/2011 the 1st team won the Manchester League First Division title in style with a fantastic 65 points out of 72 possible. This ranks as one of the highest points totals per game in Manchester League history dating back over a century. The clubs reserve team and youth teams also had terrific seasons, resulting in promotion and for the second year reaching the Bridgewater Cup Final. The Youth team reached yet another final where they were just pipped to the trophy by New Mills. The Veterans were runners up in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans League and then started a second veterans team such was the interest in the club. Plans were also made to formally integrate junior football as the club Vision is to be a FA Charter Standard Community Club, playing at the highest possible level it can whilst remaining financially viable. Further improved saw floodlights erected in 2011 to meet FA requirements and West competed in the FA Vase for the first time in 2011-2012 as a Step 7 club. Election to the NWCFL followed in June 2012 and the club had an incredible first season winning the Div1 Trophy, finishing in 3rd position after an amazing run in during March and April to secure promotion and also winning a guaranteed FA Cup place. The over 45’s team again chipped in with Cheshire Veterans league silverware. 2013-14 saw the club meet a number of challenges on and off the field by recovering from a series of early season setbacks and defeats in August to consolidate with a very creditable 12th place league finish. Two new stands were installed to improves the spectator facilities, new grass pitches and youth teams were added as part of the long term development plan, whilst remaining as a volunteer run, ‘not for profit’ club. The other historic milestones achieved during the season were the 2-0 home victory over Abbey Hey in the club’s first ever appearance in the FA Cup followed by a 2-1 first ever FA Vase victory away at NCEL Rossington Main near Doncaster in mid September. This season the club hosts Brighouse Town from the Evo Stik league in the FA Cup at the end of August having been given a walk by the FA against NWCFL new club Cammell Laird 1907.
