Maine Road FC
WELCOME This afternoon we have our final game of 2014 and welcome our neighbours who have made the long trek from Brantingham Road for today’s game. Maine Road have a long tradition of developing local players and, like ourselves, know only too well what happens when some ‘bigger’ clubs come knocking on the door. It is no surprise that Glossop are doing so well this season as some key players from last season’s Maine Road team have moved there and this season the club are in a mid table position as they develop the next generation. Maine Road have also been good friends to ourselves in recent years as we joined the Counties and we make no apology for repeating what we’ve said before about the help and advice received from their management and Committee. Last season Maine Road were in the top 4 most of the season and garnered 6 points at our expense in the league and also finished runners up in the Challenge Cup Final. We know we’ll need to be at our best from the start today as we aim to stay in the top half of the table and build on our recent form.
BEHIND THE SCENES - THANK YOU Today is also an opportunity to say thank you to everyone who has worked so hard to support the club over the past year. We again take our hats off to Andy, Steve E and Steve S, Tony, Rob M, Dale, Paddy, Mags and all the players who have put in such significant effort during the year resulting in a 12 th place finish at the end of our first season in the Premier Division and an improved position compared with this time last season. We have seen some great stuff in recent weeks and have a lot to look forward to in the rest of the season as we aim to do better than last year. Off the field the club has been steered superbly by our Chairman Glyn Meacher, ably assisted by an active Committee with Monica Creer leading on match day catering and hospitality which is one reason we get so many repeat visitors. Dave Cooper combines the role of Treasurer with that of bar man and crowd control on match days whilst John C ensures we have a high quality match programme and Rob McKay is the main contributor and keeps the world wide fan base awake with regular tweets! We are also grateful to our helpers Paul Settle who does the gate [with John] and along with Alan ‘tannoy’ Dobson and Jane who have travelled all over to support the team and initiated the bonus ball scheme. The club is also fortunate in being able to offer football across the boards due to the hard work of James Plowright and Jim Hines who are developing a very useful reserve team, Dan and Davy Iredale who organise the A team, Ian Depeiaza and Bruce and Ruth Childs who support another exciting group of young players in our u-18 team in the NW Youth Alliance League and not forgetting Chris Smith and Phil Bairstow running the veterans team. We will literally be fulfilling our ‘one club’ Vision in the coming months as we bring all our teams together to play in one place using the new pitches and facilities at Hardy Farm and we develop junior football and merge with Oswald Road juniors. This has been a long time coming but has been well worth waiting for. This would not have been possible without the support of The Football Foundation and the ongoing generosity of our sponsors and advertisers.
Last but not least, our supporters - we are indebted to our season ticket holders and everyone who comes down regularly. A special mention for the Krombacher Ultras, you know who you are, for your fantastic support home and away and see the team responding to the ‘ever more fervent support…’ to coin a phrase.
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE and don’t forget … Our next home game is on Sat 10th January v. Bootle kick off 3pm. Next Saturday 3rd January our reserves are at home to Grappenhall Sports in Cheshire League 2. Rob Turley Thank you to James Lobley for providing the pictures in the programme today.

From the Dugout… I hope you have all had a great Christmas and I am pleased to wish you all a Happy and Prosperous New Year. It was disappointing we had a blank Saturday last week as heavy rain through the week left the pitch water logged. However, it’s good to welcome you to today’s local derby against Maine Road. We reach two milestones today as the club celebrates its 100th league match since joining the NWCFL. It’s a cliché but it has been a whirl wind two and a half years since we played our first game against Formby, on that day we came from 2-0 down to draw level only to concede a last minute winner. It was a harsh lesson of the realities of the league on the day but I’m very proud that 98 games later we have firmly establishing ourselves in the Premier Division. It has been a pleasing couple of games for us as we are now unbeaten in six NWCFL games. Since I was last writing my notes we’ve reached the quarter final of the MEN United Cup with a pleasing 2-0 win at home to an impressive Rochdale Town. We took the measure to introduce some players into the side who had been on the fringes in recent games and we weren’t disappointed as many of them did well to stake claims for the first team. It took an excellent penalty save from Paul Hughes to keep us at 0-0 but as the game wore on we were finally able to break down Rochdale with goals from Lewis Schofield and Nic Evangelinos. The following Saturday we recorded our record win at this level seeing off Stockport Sports 6-0. It’s always nice to get a result like that and on another day we could have scored even more but what was most pleasing was to see the game plan that we’d worked on in training executed exactly as planned. Credit must go to Stockport Sports too, who despite fielding a very young side continued to try and play their way back into the game right to the very end, in a couple of season’s time they are going to reap the reward of blooding so many young players. A fortnight ago we made it three wins on the bounce despite playing nearly 40 minutes with 10 men as we came away 2-1 winners at Runcorn Town. For those who were there it will be an afternoon many won’t forget for a long time, I won’t dwell on this here, however the level of our football at times was superb, with Adam Hilton and Kieran Brocklehurst who are two young players making their way in the game both outstanding. It would be an understatement to say I was kicking every ball with the lads but it’s so easy to get that involved when you’re committed to seeing your players play the right way, work hard and getting their reward. Fortunately, despite a late fight-back from Runcorn, we secured the three points which would have been devastating not to. Again I’m reliably informed that we’ve already collected 22 points away from home compared to 24 all last season and with 9 games remaining to surpass that. Although we are local rivals on the field, as clubs we remain very much friends and Maine Road have helped us greatly in our bid to reach this level. On and off the field they are a club that we have aspired to be and it’s an immensely proud moment for us that we will enter the fixture the higher placed of the two teams. Today we hope to go one closer and beat them for the first time. Enjoy the game. Andy Nelson WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC
West 6 Stockport Sports 0 match report‌ West registered back to back wins at home and made it 5 games unbeaten in the league with the 6-0 demolition of Stockport Sports. West started brightly and immediately announced their attacking intentions when Nic Evangelinos had a low hard strike tipped onto the post from Sports goalkeeper Will Burns in the opening minutes. The big keeper was called into action again when he pulled off another save from Evangelinos at the far post after Callum Schofield had launched his throw in deep into the box. The breakthrough came on 11 minutes when Gary Lilley picked up the ball from 35 yards and flew a rocket of a shot into the top right hand corner for his first ever NWCFL goal. He celebrated in style racing to the dugout to embrace Anthony Potts. West continued the pressure with Burns again called into action with a smart save from a Brocklehurst shot and then saving with his legs from a West short corner. The second took until 24 minutes, after a lull in play from West in which Stockport's young side grew into the game, Scott Jones unleashed a thunderous strike which cannoned off the cross bar and the rebound was finished off by Matt Eckersley. That's how it remained until the break as both sides were determined to play their football despite the pitch conditions. In the second half West made it 3-0 on 52 minutes when Eckersley broke through the defence, laying a pass through to Brocklehurst who got his goal with a lovely dink over the Sports goalkeeper. Eckersley, in the mood for goals, immediately sought a fourth with a decent effort curling just past the post from range. West manager rang the changes with Dion Battes and Adam Hilton replacing Scott Jones and Nic Evangelinos respectively. It was Battes who made the fourth, racing a down the left and putting a superb low cross into the path of Matt Eckersley who added his second of the game, albeit with the slight suspicion of offside about it. Lilley, having got one, almost made it two with another low shot well turned round the post by Burns who by this point was being forced to play through the pain having picked up a knock in the first half. Scott Mason almost added the fifth when his corner seemed to beat Burns at his near post, but he tipped it back onto the post with the home crowd appealing for a goal. West didn't let up with both Hilton and Brocklehurst both having good chances to extend the lead before Lewis Schofield's chance hit the post holding up the box netting. It was finally 5-0 with Hilton brilliantly cutting in from the right and his low shot squirming under the Sports goalkeeper. At the other end West goalkeeper Paul Hughes ensured his second consecutive clean sheet coming out of his goal to put off the Sports forward just enough for him to fire his shot into the car park. It was eventually 6-0 on 87 minutes as Hilton showed quick feet again in the box and finished another low shot for this second goal of the afternoon. The final whistle blew on an impressive West performance who recorded their biggest ever win in the NWCFL Premier Division. Credit must go to Stockport Sports, fielding their Under 21s side, who continued to try to play throughout and didn't give up. Rob McKay

FOOTBALL REMEMBERS A few weeks back on 6th December we had a mixed group photograph comprising the players of both teams prompted by a FA initative called Football Remembers, commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Christmas Truce in 1914. Separating fact from fiction has troubled a few notable national broadcasters but what seems clear is that soldiers from both sides left the trenches to fraternise and that there was an impromptu kickabout. Today is the nearest date to that centenary and on looking back through the club history it is noted that … ‘the club joined the Manchester Alliance League in which they continued to play football until the outbreak of the First World War. During the early war years teams had to be content with occasional friendlies and one such game was played at Christie Playing Fields, [now the hotel and office park opposite southern cemetery] on Boxing Day 1916, when the opposition was Manchester Corporation Gas Dept. Juniors. Boys admission was one penny and the ticket of that match survives in our club archives and is reproduced right.. A month later on 27th January 1916 all voluntary enlistment was stopped and all males between the ages of 19 and 41 were ‘conscripted’ into the army. Not surprisingly we have no records of what happened between 1916 and the end of the war following which the club was re-formed by Johnny Edwards. As a youth he had gained representative honours but his playing career was prematurely ended through injuries he received at the battle of the Somme, but he ably took on the role of secretary to the club after the war when the ‘ex service’ raised sufficient funds to get the club going again.

Runcorn Town 1 West 2 match report… West claimed three points at the Pavilions for the second consecutive season with an accomplished performance. Manager Andy Nelson recalled Anthony Potts, Callum Jones and Adam Hilton to the starting line up with Alex Baird, Scott Mason and Lewis Schofield all unavailable. The hosts started the brighter and six minutes in Runcorn Town were awarded a penalty when the ball cannoned off Callum Jones boot and hit him in the hand from point blank range and the referee pointed to the spot. However Runcorn couldn’t convert as Danny Toone’s shot cannoned off the cross bar and into the field behind the ground. Gary Lilley immediately punished Runcorn for their miss as on 11 minutes he notched his second league goal of the season finishing a low shot into the bottom left hand corner. On 16 minutes Anthony Potts became the first West player booked with a late challenge on Runcorn Town’s Jack Irlam who was unfortunately carried off with a twisted ankle in the fall. Evangelinos almost made it 2-0 when Matt Eckersley put in a superb low cross along the six yard box but he couldn’t quite reach it. Kieran Brocklehurst would come the closest to adding second goal as he hooked a volley from the edge of the area only to see it clip the post and bounce out with Evangelinos shot for the rebound blocked for a corner. Mark Rogers was booked just before half time after he went up for a 50-50 ball with a Runcorn player, both catching the other. However, the referee deemed it a foul and booked the West captain. Callum Jones was also added into the referee’s notebook in stoppage time as Runcorn’s Chris Thompson poked him in the eye, he was booked, along with Thompson, for knocking his hand away. West went into half time deservedly leading 1-0. West came out for the second half on top but immediately faced an uphill battle as Mark Rogers was shown a second yellow card for a mistimed challenge on the half way line. Kieran Brocklehurst also followed him into the book for dissent as he was brought down at the edge of the area only for the referee to over-rule his flagging linesman and award the home side a free kick much to the dismay of the away dugout and travelling West support. Despite not being on the field Steve Settle followed him into the book as he led the protestations from the touchline. In spite of being reduced to 10 men West continued to press high up the field and they deservedly increased their lead when ‘man of the match’ Adam Hilton latched onto a top quality pass from Eckersley, he carried the ball 25 yards, racing into the box and beating the Runcorn keeper at the near post. West continued to push forward trying to put the game beyond Runcorn Town, first Eckersley had a long range effort fly just past the post whilst Hilton continued to torment the home back line. On the other wing Evangelinos continued to cause difficulties for the home defence and thought he’d won a free kick on the edge of the area when he knocked the ball past two defenders and was brought down. However the referee thought otherwise and booked him for diving despite no appeal for a free kick.Jerome Bryson made his long awaited return in place of Evangelinos and immediately skinned his marker, running the ball to the by-line and pulled back a cross but no one could get on the end of it. Adam Hilton was next in the book as he kicked out at the Runcorn right back when the two were on the floor after a challenge. Gary Lilley was next in the book as he conceded a free kick at the edge of the area despite seemingly getting little of his man and never leaving his feet. In stoppage time West were reduced to 9 men as Potts received a ball at the edge of the area and was caught in possession and brought down his marker at the edge of the area. A second yellow followed before players had to be separated from one another. Runcorn Town’s Daniel Toone was shown a red card for pushing his head into Dion Battes face who was also bizarrely booked for his involvement. After several minutes delay Paul Shanley calmly lobbed his free kick over the wall to bring the score-line back to 2-1 and the two sides left to play five minutes of additional time ten versus nine. It was the first time Paul Hughes had been beaten this season. Sadly, the volume of cards handed out by the referee will overshadow another superb performance on the road resulting in West’s 7th away win in the league this season, one more than in all of last season away from home.

Hardy Farm Update‌ You will have noticed the continued development adjacent to the ground on Hardy Farm. This area is now being used as a warm up area for both teams on a match day to protect the pitch during the winter.
The area will have two full size and two junior pitches which have been marked out recently and this means the youth team and veterans can play their home games here from January, using the clubhouse changing rooms and lounge. We are also fitting out new changing rooms at the new car park at Hardy Farm so that the A team can commence playing their Cheshire League fixtures there from January. This means we will be able to bring all our existing teams together on one site and literally fulfil our 'one club' Vision providing football for all. We are also progressing plans to merge with our junior partners for next season and they will also be using Hardy Farm pitches and car parking as their base. The facilities at Hardy Farm will comprise new changing rooms for teams and match officials and the new pitches will be used on Saturday and Sundays. This means we will no longer need to hire so many pitches elsewhere but we will have more maintenance work for our grounds men Ian and Andy. They are working hard and busy putting the final touches to the area and we will also see new hedge planting in the new year. We then have some further work to do on the building at Hardy Farm as well as here at the ground. The completion of these new facilities has been a few years in the making but the enlarged community club is critical to our long term future. We will have football for boys and girls from the soccer skills for the very young, under 8 to under 16 junior age group junior teams, youth and veterans whilst continuing with A team reserves and first team football on Saturday afternoons. Exciting times and opportunities lie ahead as we aim to build a self sustaining and viable community football club. We want to be playing at the highest level we can both locally, regionally and nationally in FA completions like the FA Cup, Vase and Youth Cup. We look forward to building our local supporter base further and to providing enjoyable experiences for our players and our fans. WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

History …
Maine Road FC
The club was formed in 1955 as ‘City Supporters Rusholme’, when our past Chairman Frank Thompson and a few friends formed a team and after playing a few friendlies, joined the local Rusholme Sunday League. In the late sixties the club changed to the Manchester Amateur Sunday League and also moved its headquarters to the newly built Maine Road Social Club and hence the new name Maine Road FC was born. Ronnie Meredith was now running the club and in 1971-72 we won the Manchester County Sunday Cup and both the club’s sides won their respective leagues. This prompted Ron to look for a new challenge and he changed the whole future of the club by moving to Saturday football in the form of the Manchester League. Success followed success on the field and after several years of moving grounds we settled on our present home at Brantingham Road in 1980. After a lean spell, one of Ron’s ambitions was realised in Season 1983-84 when we won the Manchester League Premier Division. In fact, we won the league four years running. Derek Barber took over the managerial reins in 1986 and the clubs progress continued so much that, when the Manchester County FA’s new complex at Brantingham Road was built, Ron’s other ambition was achieved; entry to the Bass North West Counties League. In only our second season (1989), we finished runners up to Vauxhall Motors. Regrettably we were denied promotion due to ground grading, so in 1990 we went one better to win the 2nd Division Championship and take our rightful place in Division One. In Season 198788 we beat Irlam Town 1-0 at Maine Road (home of Manchester City) in the Manchester Premier Cup to complete a unique record in the Manchester County Competitions by winning all five County Cups. The five Manchester County Cups are Premier Cup (1), Amateur Cup (5), Sunday Amateur Cup (1), Intermediate Cup (2), Challenge Cup (4). At the end of Season 2001-02, after twelve seasons in the top division, Maine Road were relegated to the 2nd division. This was the first time a Maine Road side had ever been relegated and we hope it will be the last. After two seasons in the 2nd division under the guidance of Chris Simms when our very young side finished 3rd and runners up, we returned to the top division, (2004) and the club finished 8th and 10th in the following two seasons. The arrival of Ian Walker as manager (2006) saw Maine Roads improvement continue with 3 top 6 finishes in 4 seasons and the winning of the prestigious League Challenge Cup (2008). In 2012-13 John Morrey/Chris Thomas took over the managerial reins and in 2 seasons continued the improvement with a magnificent runners up spot (2013), followed by a 4th position (2014). New manager Lee Bennett has taken over for the 2014-15 season and we wish him all the best. Maine Road has a long and proud reputation for attracting young players to the club. This began in the late 1980’s, which brought a succession of fine young players to the club. This success in spotting and nurturing the best young talent has continued over the past decades with Maine Road’s domination of the Umbro International Tournament at Under 19 level. Over 11 seasons our Under 19’s have taken on and regularly outplayed talented youngsters from around the world. They have won the competition an amazing 6 times and been runners up 3 times. The record set by the team of 2003 may never be surpassed when 8 of the squad regularly played 1st team football in the same season. Another factor in the continued success of the club is the outstanding loyalty shown by many players. The best examples are the appearances made by the following players Ian Walker 637 , Chris Simms: 556 , Gordon Woods 465 , John Morrey 421, Robin Gibson 386, Alex Jay 382, and Neil Chappell 377 (The top 5 players have also gone on to run the first or reserve teams) . Another amazing record is that in our entire history we have had only 8 managers.

A Brief History… West Didsbury and Chorlton FC, have come a long way in their 105 year history which began back in 1908 when the club was founded as Christ Church A.F.C. by Mr R F Hartley, a Sunday School Superintendent at the church on Princess Parkway, West Didsbury.
West played friendlies at first and then in the Manchester Alliance League until the First World War 1914. After the War the club joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League for the 1920/21 season and had to change its name to West Didsbury AFC, as that League did not permit a name suggesting association with any other body. The club was placed in Divisions 1 and A, staying in the top flight for 25 seasons. The first honours were double runners up in Div 1 and Rhodes Cup in 1922/23, and the club remained in the L+C League until 2006, winning many honours and providing 4 League Presidents along the way. The home ground from before 1914 until the mid 1980’s was Christie Playing Fields, and then the owners, Manchester and Salford Playing Fields Society, gave the club notice to quit having decided to sell off the land for commercial development – now ironically called ‘Christie Fields’ office park. After several years’ nomadic existence searching for a new home, the club acquired the redundant and overgrown Recreation Ground at Brookburn Road in 1996, and began to restore this to active use and develop a vision for a community club. This was down to the hard work of a core of players and Committee who refused to let the club fold. Work was completed in time to start the 1997-98 season using excellent new changing rooms and clubhouse facilities aided by a Lottery grant, new sponsors and members’ fundraising, but without a penny from the Playing Fields Society sale proceeds. Further name change followed in 2003 to reflect the new location in Chorlton and the club was then elected to the Manchester League in 2006. In 2007/8 West won its first Manchester League silverware lifting the Murray Shield in the last game of our centenary year. That team was the nucleus of the previously successful junior team and the following season 2008/09 West just missed promotion to the Premier Division and again reached the Murray Shield Final. won their League. With a new management team led by Andy Nelson, 2009/10 was very successful and honours spread throughout the club. The 1st team won the Murray Shield (the third consecutive year in the final) and was league runners-up. The reserves won the Bridgewater League Cup and the U17 Youth team won their League.
In 2010/2011 the 1st team won the Manchester League First Division title in style with a fantastic 65 points out of 72 possible. This ranks as one of the highest points totals per game in Manchester League history dating back over a century. The clubs reserve team and youth teams also had terrific seasons, resulting in promotion and for the second year reaching the Bridgewater Cup Final. The Youth team reached yet another final where they were just pipped to the trophy by New Mills. The Veterans were runners up in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans League and then started a second veterans team such was the interest in the club. Plans were also made to formally integrate junior football as the club Vision is to be a FA Charter Standard Community Club, playing at the highest possible level it can whilst remaining financially viable. Further improved saw floodlights erected in 2011 to meet FA requirements and West competed in the FA Vase for the first time in 2011-2012 as a Step 7 club. Election to the NWCFL followed in June 2012 and the club had an incredible first season winning the Div1 Trophy, finishing in 3rd position after an amazing run in during March and April to secure promotion and also winning a guaranteed FA Cup place. The over 45’s team again chipped in with Cheshire Veterans league silverware. 2013-14 saw the club meet a number of challenges on and off the field by recovering from a series of early season setbacks and defeats in August to consolidate with a very creditable 12th place league finish. Two new stands were installed to improves the spectator facilities, new grass pitches and youth teams were added as part of the long term development plan, whilst remaining as a volunteer run, ‘not for profit’ club. The other historic milestones achieved during the season were the 2-0 home victory over Abbey Hey in the club’s first ever appearance in the FA Cup followed by a 2-1 first ever FA Vase victory away at NCEL Rossington Main near Doncaster in mid September. This season the club hosts Brighouse Town from the Evo Stik league in the FA Cup at the end of August having been given a walk by the FA against NWCFL new club Cammell Laird 1907.
