EDITORIAL

ROCHDALE TOWN

WELCOME Today is a big game for us as it is the last chance to maintain interest in the League Challenge Cup with a place in the quarter finals at stake. Rochdale Town are our visitors and we welcome everyone from Rochdale to The Recreation Ground for only the second time, following their inaugural visit in October 2012. That was for a league fixture during the 2012-13 season in Division One when a sprightly Tre Baldwin Willis lit up an otherwise dull afternoon with a couple of memorable strikes to see us home. This season Rochdale Town are in the upper reaches of Division One and progressed to this stage of the Cup with an away win 5-3 on penalties against Hanley Town a few weeks back. This is a game where the form book goes out of the window with everything to play for and we will need to show the desire and will to win if we are to progress to the last 8. Before the AFC Blackpool game many were remarking that we’d not featured in a draw this season, only for the visiting keeper to win the man of the match award for his heroics in denying us the win our overall play deserved. We had one disallowed for a questionable offside decision, hit the post but just couldn’t break down the stubborn resistance of the visitors who held on for their point. Last Saturday at Nelson we were leading 1-0 after 23 minutes when Nico Evangelinos was taken out as he surged past the home goalkeeper. Everyone in the ground waited for the inevitable penalty and red card, but the referee generously showed yellow before Scott Mason calmly slotted home from the spot to make it 2-0. A couple of bits of sloppy play on our part saw the home side draw level with two goals in as many minutes, but the lads rallied well and were full value for the away point against an earnest and physical Nelson side. We were left wondering what might have been as we’ve now been on the wrong end of decisions in some similar situations in recent weeks but at least we dug in and got a result through some determined performances. CHRISTMAS BONFIRE AND FIREWORK EVENT Our Community bonfire is going to have a rather festive theme this year and will be held at the club on the evening of Saturday 13th December. This is our big annual fundraiser so please support the event and spread the word to friends and family so that we have a big attendance. FORTHCOMING FIXTURES AND OTHER EVENTS Next Saturday, 6th December, we are at home again at 3pm against Stockport Sports, before travelling away to Runcorn Town on Sat 13th. Saturday 20th we are at home at 3pm to AFC Liverpool and on Saturday 27th December we host neighbours Maine Road, again at 3pm. WW1 CENTENARY REMEMBERANCE AT WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON We will also commemorate the centenary of one of the most iconic moments of the First World War - the 1914 Christmas Truce – as part of a week of remembrance activity in December 2014. 'Football Remembers Week' will take place from 5-14 December. A joint collaboration between The FA, the Premier League, the Football League and the British Council, the aim is to engage football fans and players at every level about what took place on Christmas Day one hundred years ago on the battlefields in Belgium. On 25 December 1914, soldiers from both sides put down their weapons and crossed into ‘no man’s land’ to share in an impromptu ceasefire. First-hand accounts from the time include references to football being played and photographs taken. We will join with Football across the country on Sat 6th and again on Sat 27th which is the nearest day to the centenary of the Christmas Truce. Thank you for your ongoing and growing support, enjoy the game and have a safe journey home. Rob Turley WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

From the Dugout… Hello and welcome to today’s MEN United Cup game against Rochdale Town. We have had a busy couple of weeks since I last wrote within these pages with trips to Bootle, Ramsbottom and Nelson in a short space of time. Add in the visit of AFC Blackpool two weeks ago and I’m pleased to report the only defeat we’ve suffered in that time was against Evo-Stik Premier League opposition when we finally succumbed 8 minutes from time having matched and at times outplayed the highest ever placed opposition we’ve faced in our history. On the field we could take heart from that performance as we’d done the hard work on Saturday to secure three points against Bootle and we wish Ramsbottom United the best of luck in the next round at Atherton Collieries. Against AFC Blackpool we dominated the game from start to finish in difficult conditions, we played some pleasing stuff and on another day we’d have won that by 4 or 5 but credit must go to the opposition for their own performance. It’s starting to sound like a broken record but in the stands that day we had Anthony Potts, Lee Malkin, Richmond Botchey, Nic Evangelinos, Chis McDonagh and Jerome Bryson but to name a few, if just one of these players had been fit then I think the result might have been different. However players such as Kieran Brocklehurst have come in, done well and really taken their chance and as a manager you can’t ask for more. At Nelson we started brightly, took an early lead with a good goal, won a penalty, got on the wrong end of an awful decision when the referee failed to send off their goalkeeper and they were level before we’d really got to grips with the decision despite having scored a second. Against a side that were expected to challenge for honours at the beginning of the season we played some excellent football, really dug in and grafted and we thoroughly deserved the point and possibly more. Today gives us the chance to progress in our final cup competition having exited from the Lancs Trophy, FA Cup and Vase earlier in the season. However whilst we know Rochdale Town will be tough opposition the game represents a terrific chance of progression into the quarter finals. From there anything can happen and we must strive to work hard today and put our name in the hat. Enjoy the game. Andy Nelson

West 0 AFC Blackpool 0 match report‌ West and AFC Blackpool played out an entertaining draw in a game in which West dominated but were unable to find the crucial winner. After the high tempo fixture away to Ramsbottom in mid-week West manager Andy Nelson was forced into several changes with Alex Baird and Chris McDonagh both unavailable and Nick Evangelinos injured. In their place Nelson was able to re-call Callum Schofield, Kieran Brocklehurst and Lewis Schofield into the starting line up. West started the game brightly with both wingers, Lewis Schofield and Adam Hilton, creating early chances in the final third, Hilton would have the games first chance neatly cutting inside from the touch line, coming across his marker and firing a low shot into the keepers hands. On the left hand side Lewis Schofield broke down the left after a superb weighted pass to cut inside the full back, his pull back found Gary Lilley who's low shot was fumbled by the goalkeeper and Brocklehurst was on hand to fire home the rebound. However it was not to be as the linesman had his flag up, a close decision especially considering the linesman had failed to keep up with play. A minute later the exact same move occurred again with a Lewis Schofield pull back finding Lilley, his low shot again spilled by the keeper but this time Brocklehurst's shot cannoned the base of the post. With AFC Blackpool's players protesting for offside, this time the linesman kept his flag down. With Blackpool happy to launch the ball long down the middle West continued to assert their dominance in the midfield, on a difficult surface, they played a crisp passing game unlocking Brocklehurst, who whipped in a low cross along the six yard box which Matt Eckersley's diving header was unable hit the target and it rolled just wide of the post. The best chance of the half came in stoppage time as Lewis Schofield, having switched to the right, cut inside dribbling the ball across his man and unleashed a rocket into the top corner only to force a wonder save from the AFC Blackpool goalkeeper Caunce. The second half kicked off in the same manner, with eventual man of the match, Adam Hilton cutting inside from a corner, unleashing a rocket of a shot forcing the Blackpool goalkeeper into a second top class save. Lilley followed up forcing the keeper into another save, with that followed by a Brocklehurst over head kick going wide at the third attempt. The next chance fell to Scott Mason, as he out-jumped the keeper at the near post from a cross but couldn't divert his header towards goal. At the other, Jordan Hitchen, a spectator for much of the game was forced to tip a looping shot over the bar for a Blackpool corner. On the attack again, West felt that they should have had a penalty when a clear hand was used to block a cross but the ref waived it away despite having booked Callum Jones for a less obvious handling of the ball in first half stoppage time. In the final minutes, as both sides tired, Blackpool who had employed stalling tactics for almost the entirety of the game began to go in search of a winner of their own but rarely drew Hitchen into action and their giant centre forward was quietly marshalled throughout by, Captain for the day, Steve Settle and Callum Schofield. In the closing moments West were restricted to long range efforts and the game played out to the home sides first league draw in 21 games. www.westdidsburychorlton.co.uk

Nelson 2 West 2 match report‌ West headed to Little Wembley, home of Nelson, earning themselves a point and should have had all three in a game they held a two goal lead in. West manager Andy Nelson was forced into two changes with Callum Jones and, last week’s man of the match, Adam Hilton both injured. He was able to welcome back into the side Nick Evangelinos after his injury and also handed Mark Rogers his first start since his injury in August. He also welcomed back Alex Baird who had been unavailable against AFC Blackpool. The game set off at a frenetic pace with Nelson making some early running and putting the West defence under early pressure. However it was West who took an early lead on 8 minutes when a quick free kick was taken by Mark Rogers just outside the West penalty area playing in Evangelinos who fired his shot past the Nelson keeper low into the bottom right hand corner to give the visitors the lead. It was almost immediately 2-0 as the Nelson keeper came out to head away a West long ball but his header fell to Mason whose shot flew past the post. Another good move from West saw a low chance deflected over from Gary Lilley for a corner whilst at the other end pull back from Nelson cannoned off the crossbar from a Matty O’Neil effort. The turning point of the game came on 23 minutes when Evangelinos latched onto another through ball, rounded the Nelson goalkeeper Ben Woodhead and was hauled to the floor with an open goal at his mercy. The referee pointed to the penalty spot but deemed the chance not to be a direct goalscoring opportunity and only brandished a yellow card to the goalkeeper. Worse was to come for West as Evangelinos suffered a dead leg in the challenge, he persevered until 70 minutes but was unable to have the same impact. Mason stepped up and sent his shot high into the top left hand corner to give West a deserved 2-0 lead. On 30 minutes the referee awarded another penalty, this time for Nelson for a perceived push by Settle, the slightest of touches and Gareth Peet threw himself to the floor. Peter Wright stepped up for Nelson and fired the penalty low into the bottom left hand corner. Two minutes later the sides were level as Nelson won a throw on the right, worked their way to the by-line for a pullback cross low to Peet whose shot found the net through a crowd of players and the sides went into the break level despite a late chance from Nelson fired wide. West came out for the second half quickly and almost took the lead after some intricate play from Lewis Schofield and Lilley finding Evangelinos in the box but his shot was saved low by the Nelson keeper. The second half saw fewer chances as a soft pitch began to cut up and more than one or two challenges flew in from the home side. The best chance of the half fell to Nelson who, breaking from a West corner two on one forced Hitchen in turning a brilliant save low and around the post for a corner. A feat even more impressive with the large cut on his forehead claiming a loose ball and receiving a knee in the face from the Nelson centre forward. West were restricted to half chances and set pieces as the continued to be on the receiving end of robust challenges from the home side but more than held on, finishing strongly, to earn a well-deserved point against Nelson in a flowing game filled with action. WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON AFC

History‌

Rochdale Town

The present Club was formed in 1924 as St Gabriels and played in the Rochdale Sunday League, players had to be Catholic and go to Church regularly to be able to play for the Club. In the early 1960's the Club changed this policy to be able to attract more players to the then struggling Club. This change had an immediate effect with the Club winning many local trophies. In 1979 the Club bought it's present home, then known as Butterworth Park, the Club continued to progress on and off the field, with major improvements to the clubhouse and the ground. In 1985 the Club joined the Manchester League and in their second season won the League and Murray Shield and gained promotion to the Premier League. In 1990 the Club joined the North West Counties League and dropped 'Saint' from the Club's name. Despite gradually improving the facilities at the ground, the costs involved began to take their toll, and despite winning the Reserve Division Cup, the Reserve team was disbanded. This then started the Club on a downward spiral. The Clubs driving force for many years left the Club with ownership changing to a Limited Company. The Ground was allowed to fall into disrepair, the team was struggling and at the end of 2004/05 the Club was effectively relegated when the Ground failed the grading criteria. This was the Club's darkest hour, but hope was around the corner, the Club was bought by Rochdale Mayfield Rugby Club who immediately started to refurbish the Stadium. Our friends at Oldham Town FC allowed us to ground share until we could return to Castleton, thus allowing us to remain in the North West Counties League. The Club returned to the now renamed Castleton Sports Centre in November 2005. Despite playing at a superb ground the Club still struggled on and off the field, so at the end of 2007/2008 season in an effort to change the Club's fortunes it was decided to rename the Club ROCHDALE TOWN F.C and start a new era at the Club.

The MEN UNITED Cup The Men United Cup is in support of the campaign currently being run by The League’s Official Charity Partner, Prostate Cancer UK. Paul Lawler, League Development Officer, said: “The North West Counties League was delighted to link up with Prostate Cancer UK at the start of this season, in order to raise awareness of the Men United campaign and highlight the great work Prostate Cancer UK is currently doing in raising awareness of Prostate Cancer within the football community. Mark Bishop, Director of Fundraising for Prostate Cancer UK said: “Hot on the heels of our success on Non League day, it’s great that our work within The North West Counties League is gaining real momentum. “This is another opportunity to put the cause of prostate cancer in front of people, not in a scary and frightening way, but in a way that celebrates life and the love of the beautiful game. “Being Men United on the pitch, as we all know, is the best way to end up lifting a trophy, but being Men United in life is the best way of fighting prostate cancer and ultimately keeping more men alive.”

A Brief History… West Didsbury and Chorlton FC, have come a long way in their 105 year history which began back in 1908 when the club was founded as Christ Church A.F.C. by Mr R F Hartley, a Sunday School Superintendent at the church on Princess Parkway, West Didsbury.

West played friendlies at first and then in the Manchester Alliance League until the First World War 1914. After the War the club joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League for the 1920/21 season and had to change its name to West Didsbury AFC, as that League did not permit a name suggesting association with any other body. The club was placed in Divisions 1 and A, staying in the top flight for 25 seasons. The first honours were double runners up in Div 1 and Rhodes Cup in 1922/23, and the club remained in the L+C League until 2006, winning many honours and providing 4 League Presidents along the way. The home ground from before 1914 until the mid 1980’s was Christie Playing Fields, and then the owners, Manchester and Salford Playing Fields Society, gave the club notice to quit having decided to sell off the land for commercial development – now ironically called ‘Christie Fields’ office park. After several years’ nomadic existence searching for a new home, the club acquired the redundant and overgrown Recreation Ground at Brookburn Road in 1996, and began to restore this to active use and develop a vision for a community club. This was down to the hard work of a core of players and Committee who refused to let the club fold. Work was completed in time to start the 1997-98 season using excellent new changing rooms and clubhouse facilities aided by a Lottery grant, new sponsors and members’ fundraising, but without a penny from the Playing Fields Society sale proceeds. Further name change followed in 2003 to reflect the new location in Chorlton and the club was then elected to the Manchester League in 2006. In 2007/8 West won its first Manchester League silverware lifting the Murray Shield in the last game of our centenary year. That team was the nucleus of the previously successful junior team and the following season 2008/09 West just missed promotion to the Premier Division and again reached the Murray Shield Final. won their League. With a new management team led by Andy Nelson, 2009/10 was very successful and honours spread throughout the club. The 1st team won the Murray Shield (the third consecutive year in the final) and was league runners-up. The reserves won the Bridgewater League Cup and the U17 Youth team won their League.

In 2010/2011 the 1st team won the Manchester League First Division title in style with a fantastic 65 points out of 72 possible. This ranks as one of the highest points totals per game in Manchester League history dating back over a century. The clubs reserve team and youth teams also had terrific seasons, resulting in promotion and for the second year reaching the Bridgewater Cup Final. The Youth team reached yet another final where they were just pipped to the trophy by New Mills. The Veterans were runners up in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans League and then started a second veterans team such was the interest in the club. Plans were also made to formally integrate junior football as the club Vision is to be a FA Charter Standard Community Club, playing at the highest possible level it can whilst remaining financially viable. Further improved saw floodlights erected in 2011 to meet FA requirements and West competed in the FA Vase for the first time in 2011-2012 as a Step 7 club. Election to the NWCFL followed in June 2012 and the club had an incredible first season winning the Div1 Trophy, finishing in 3rd position after an amazing run in during March and April to secure promotion and also winning a guaranteed FA Cup place. The over 45’s team again chipped in with Cheshire Veterans league silverware. 2013-14 saw the club meet a number of challenges on and off the field by recovering from a series of early season setbacks and defeats in August to consolidate with a very creditable 12th place league finish. Two new stands were installed to improves the spectator facilities, new grass pitches and youth teams were added as part of the long term development plan, whilst remaining as a volunteer run, ‘not for profit’ club. The other historic milestones achieved during the season were the 2-0 home victory over Abbey Hey in the club’s first ever appearance in the FA Cup followed by a 2-1 first ever FA Vase victory away at NCEL Rossington Main near Doncaster in mid September. This season the club hosts Brighouse Town from the Evo Stik league in the FA Cup at the end of August having been given a walk by the FA against NWCFL new club Cammell Laird 1907.
