FROM THE DUG OUT

FA CARLSBERG VASE

Last week Andy talked about the importance or reacting positively to adversity when I referred to our coming back from being behind to beat last year‟s Champions GREGORIANS 2-1, and it was pleasing to see another good reaction to the disappointment of our 4-5 penalty shoot out reversal in the Lancashire Amateur Shield when we secured all 3 points against Prestwich Heys last Saturday with another encouraging 3-0 win. It is always nice to keep a clean sheet and Tommy Walsh‟s brace last Saturday demonstrated why he has been selected for the Inter League team. We all want to congratulate Tommy on his selection which is an honour both for him, the squad and the club. League manager Rob Brown has a huge pool of players to pick from so to make the squad is a significant achievement.

We were delighted to have been accepted into the FA Carlsberg Vase competition for the first time in the club‟s 103 year history, However, the game in the Wirral against Ashville AFC was over before it began as we conceded in the first minute and then after a defensive error went 2-0 down within 30 minutes. Credit to the team who kept to the task and tried to get back into the game, unfortunately this proved too difficult against strong opposition. The experience was valuable and we learnt from the game although it was disappointing to go out at the first hurdle 2 – 0.

Andy Nelson

Well Done… We previously mentioned Tommy Walsh had been selected for the Inter League game before we heard Dave Kilbride had also been called up. Dave is in action on the left and Tommy below.

Dave Conlon weighs up his options from this free kick.

Rob turns his hand to media activity…

Our Visitors - Stockport Georgians

Leading up to the Carlsberg FA Vase game against Ashville, Rob was interviewed on BBC Radio Manchester‟s Non League show (on a Friday between 6 – 7 pm). It was great to see the impact the club has been having recently to receive this request and Rob didn‟t let us down taking to this in his stride. If anyone wants to hear this interview it is available from John as an MP3 file. As if this wasn‟t enough when we arrived at Ashville we received a request to help out as a blind man who had travelled up from East Anglia wanted to have a commentary on the game. Despite this being one of the biggest days in our history Rob was happy to oblige…amazing!! Rob providing a match commentary!

CLUB NEWS, DEVELOPMENT and FORTHCOMING EVENTS th

There are 2 main events – the SPORTSMANS EVENING on Thurs 13 October and the COMMUNITY BONFIRE NIGHT on 5th November. SPORTSMANS EVENING – The full page advertisement has all the details and make it a priority to attend. We want each team squad to take at least one table so put the date in your diary, take a few flyers from the clubhouse and invite your friends also. th

COMMUNITY BONFIRE NIGHT – This not surprisingly will be on Saturday 5 November commencing from 6.30pm when the bonfire is lit. We need volunteers to assist with stewarding as in the past few years this event has attracted crowds of about 500 adults and children which means the club needs 10-15 people in addition to the Committee helpers. CLUBHOUSE IMPROVEMENTS – Following your suggestions a new flat screen TV was installed at the end of July and we will now be screening live Premiership games after our Saturday home games. This has involved considerable „investment‟ in new equipment and subscriptions for ESPN and Sky Sports 1 and 2. With increased running costs and membership subscriptions at the same low level the additional funds we need must come through the clubhouse and other events…SO… PLEASE SUPPORT all these initiatives at your club as we all have a stake in its success!

Stockport Georgians football club has its origins in St. George‟s Church on Buxton Road in 1908, games were played at a ground on Nangreave Road in Heaviley in the Stockport Sunday League. All football was suspended during the Great War but resumed in 1919 and with the church having made some land available in trust for sporting activities, and minutes from a general meeting from October 1923 confirm that the club is to be called St. Georges (Stockport) Athletic Club. At that time, in addition to football, there were clubs for cricket, hockey, tennis and, for the younger people, scouts and girl guides. It is interesting to note from those minutes that “qualification for membership shall be as follows : attendance at Divine Worship held in St. George‟s Church or membership of the Men‟s Bible Class”. If those conditions applied today we might have trouble fielding just a first eleven! The club played in the Stockport League in the 1920‟s with success in the 1926 and 1927 seasons when they were champions, having acquired the current site in February 1925 in a conveyance “of a plot of land containing eight acres and twentyseven perches situated at Woodsmoor, Stockport”. This area originally belonged to Mirrlees Bickerton. In 1931 the club was elected to division two of the Lancashire & Cheshire Amateur League. Football was again suspended during the 1939/45 war but by the early 50‟s a third team was playing in the L & C third division, and in 1964 the club won division 2 of that league. Between 1970 and 1973 due to deterioration of the playing surface Georgians played at Woodbank Park and Davenport School and during this time the changing rooms at Woodsmoor were burnt down. In 1973 new facilities were built alongside the prefabricated building of the Cricket Club with assistance of a Sports Council grant and the sale of some of the land. In 1975 Georgians entered a team in the Stockport & District Sunday Football League division 4. but the side had folded by the mid 90‟s. In 1987 the football club amalgamated with Adswood Amateurs which greatly increased the number of players available, raised the profile of the club and established an even stronger committee, which at this level is what keeps amateur clubs alive. Since the turn of the century there has been an increase in cup final and semi final appearances and now three sides play each week. Our pitch is well tended and for the past few seasons the club has been selected to host local cup semi finals, while on Sundays a local veteran eleven and Stockport County Ladies play alternately. The facilities, which were greatly improved this summer, offer spacious clean changing rooms and good shower areas for officials and players. So, the club reached its century in 2008 and, with the land held in trust and overseen by four trustees, and with an increased membership, there is no reason why another one cannot be achieved!

West seal a third win of the season in the Premier Division… West Vets had another good win to keep our 100% record and keep us on top of the Premier Division. From the way we dominated possession early on - with the midfield particularly dominant and full-backs always available to help build the play - the result should never have been in doubt, although there were some warning signs. However, our final ball was rarely good enough and when we did breakthrough, their keeper was good enough to deal with what we threw (straight) at him. Then, a floated free-kick from a fairly unthreatening position induced a spot of defensive miscommunication and they went ahead from a flicked header and neat finish. We reacted well in terms of keeping a focus on possession and attacking, although less well in terms of missing a penalty after Kinney had waltzed his way into the area and belted the ball against a defender's arm. Still, Fowler made up for his miss with a fine cross minutes later for Robi to power home one of his trade-mark headers. Then, just before half-time we finally got in front after Maj made a storming run from his deep-lying position, latched onto a precise thro‟ ball to round the keeper and prod home from wide with an un-Torres-like flourish. The second-half was a similar story: Fowler pushed us further ahead with a very good header back across the keeper after a cracking cross from Noel, but then we made life hard for ourselves after a half-hit back pass let them in for a soft one. They put us under pressure for a while without really breaking through before Marvin made sure in the final minutes with another very well-timed midfield run beyond their back-four to turn slyly home over the keeper. Youth Team … the opening two games Our first game (25-9-2011) in Altrincham Youth League (17-21yr olds) at home was against Medlock Rangers which resulted in a 1-1 draw. This was a hard physical match as we came up against much older players. Medlock featuring a "John Hartson" look alike who couldn‟t hit a barn door from 5 yards. Our team refused to be bullied and played some flowing football. We took the lead with Danny Griffiths tapping in after the Medlock keeper had failed to hang onto the ball. An opportunity to extend the lead was not taken with a missed penalty. Medlock equalised with 15 minutes to go after a bizarre refereeing decision. All in all a good opening start with West unfortunate not to take 3 points. Our second game last was against Lostock Rangers away at Woodford Rec Park. Before the match kicked off the Lostock manager explained to me the intricacies of filling in and completing the match book procedure for the League. He told me the only way he could understand it was by doing a flow chart as there were more stages than the "Tour de France". The game itself was an exciting one going end to end throughout. Initially West created more chances and Diante Jasper hit the post with a rasper of a shot from 20 yards. However against the run of play Lostock took the lead when our defence failed to close down the left winger who promptly drove ball in from outside the box. Their lead was doubled after a mistake by our defender on the left allowed Lostock right winger to get in a cross shot which Remus couldn‟t hold onto and rebound was knocked in. This further setback spurred West into action and Diante again unleashed a corker from 25 yards which was destined for the top corner before a fantastic save from the Lostock goalie who until then had been a bit uncertain with his handling. Two goals in quick succession put West level. First was an own goal after good work by Fabian Brown in the air unsettled the Lostock centre half who headed up and over his keeper into an empty net. Minutes later Josh Dawkins dispossessed their right back and squared ball to Fabian Brown to slot it in. The equaliser set up a dramatic finale which could have gone either way. In fact Lostock snatched the game going straight up field to score after several of West‟s strikers failed to convert a cross that whizzed across the Lostock 6 yard box. West piled forward in search of a goal but paid the penalty being caught out by a 70 yard punt which fell to their attacker who lobbed Remus to finish us off.4-2 to them but a very good performance from West, probably the youngest team in the League.

Reserve Team …the season so far As we have reported in earlier programmes, our Reserves had a tough start to the season losing four games by the odd goal in the opening five, the only success coming with a good 4-0 victory over Rochdale Sacred Heart at Brookburn Road. Things were to get worse though when Walshaw gave us a good hiding running out 7 – 0 winners in the first of seven consecutive away games! Pleasingly things have started to improve with players returning and we have now had a run of three unbeaten games all away. The first being a 2 -2 against East Manchester , followed by a good 3-0 win over Old Alts, then another draw away against Elton Vale Res. The reserves have a blank Saturday today before completing the series of away th games returning to action at home on November 5 against Leigh Amateurs.
