It’s hard to imagine that Grease is over 50 years old—and that at the time it was first created in the early 1970’s, it was only 12 years after the year depicted in the story!
Nostalgia is a powerful tool in evoking thought, memory, and feeling. Most of us have some association with Grease—via enjoyment of the original production or film version, in seeing productions through the years, or in singing “Summer Nights” at the top of our lungs in a karaoke bar (or is that just me?). Its feel-good music, characters, and bouncy story have made millions of smiling audiences leave theatres tapping their toes for decades, and will do so for years to come.
I had a conversation with my father on his 60th birthday (as we went tobogganing after dinner…). He said, “You know, I still feel like I’m 18—it’s the rest of the world that treats me like I’m 60.” As I get older, I recognize how true this is, and it’s part of Grease’s eternal appeal: we’re not just reminded of the way we used to be, we still are those people deep inside—and we love going along with their journey because of it.
The show’s appeal lies in enduring characters, catchy tunes, and a feeling of easy-breezy life. If it’s a reminder of something sweet for all of you—and if you go back into the world with a song in your heart and love in your soul—that’s the timeless takeaway.

Thanks to all of you, WCT continues to rebound from the challenges faced by all of us over the past few years. The message of Grease is “We go together”—and the exuberant joy of sharing this fun in a theatre with others is testament to the importance of gathering as a community. We’ve got another great season lined up for you next year, and we can’t wait to have you back.
Enjoy.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES by JAMES MacDONALD

Usually when envisioning a production, I start with the story, and the production design develops from the themes and plot of the show. I talk with the designer about the locations, the flow of the scenes, the creative use of the stage.
Grease evolved slightly differently. Last year, when working on The Wizard of Oz on our new revolving stage, I was struck by how much the stage resembled a giant record player. I set out to think of a show that would be perfect for our times and audiences, that would be suitable to be staged on a set that looked like a record player/juke box, with elements of the high school gym so familiar to most of us. And from there, the designers and I talked about how this outline would support a fast-paced, fun staging of the show. Grease…is the word.
Grease the stage musical pre-dated the film, and contains elements not present in the movie— and vice versa. We’ve inserted certain songs from the film that are not actually in the stage version, and you’ll hear a few tunes from the stage version that develop the characters and story in giving us a more well-rounded look at life at Rydell High.
Grease is a story of youth, exuberance, and burgeoning romance. It was written at a time when our standard of the depiction of male/female relationships, as well as issues such as consent, were substantially different than they are today. Yet the story holds – and becomes one of equality, liberation, and empowerment for all of the characters, especially the women. We have a lot of fun working on these musicals, and we love the way the happiness spreads through our community. It’s a real pleasure to share this joy with all of you.

ABOUT THE CREATORS

JIM JACOBS (Book, Music, and Lyrics). Jacobs, who created Grease (in 1970) with Warren Casey, was born and raised on the mean streets of Chicago’s far northwest side. During the golden era of rock ‘n’ roll (1956-1960) he was a guitar-playing “greaser” student at Taft High School. In 1963, Jacobs met Warren Casey when they were both cast in a local theatre production of A Shot in the Dark. Seven years later they wrote what was to become one of the greatest musicals of all time. Grease opened in 1971 in a former trolley barn called the Kingston Mines Theatre in Chicago. A year later, Grease made it to Broadway and “Greasemania” took off, resulting in one of the longest running shows in Broadway history. The 1978 movie became and remains the highest-grossing movie musical of all time. Originally an actor, Jacobs has been seen on television, in motion pictures, regional theatre, national tours, and on Broadway. He is the co-author of several other plays and musicals including Island of Lost Coeds, a musical spoof of the low budget sci-fi/horror/jungle movies of the 1950s, which he wrote with Warren Casey. In May 2014, Mr. Jacobs was presented with an honorary doctorate degree from Columbia College in Chicago. He currently resides in Southern California and remains active in the theatre, especially with the American Theatre Company of Chicago.
WARREN CASEY (Author, Composer, and Lyricist) was born in Yonkers, New York, and attended Syracuse University. During the late ‘50s, he learned all about “greasers” while working as an art teacher in upstate New York. He moved to Chicago in 1962, where he hoped to pursue an acting career. He appeared in dozens of productions, including creating the role of Bernie Litko in David Mamet’s Sexual Perversity in Chicago. He supported himself with jobs in retail, including working as an assistant manager of a chain of apparel stores, and as a record salesman. In the meantime, he taught himself how to play the guitar and began writing songs. Mr. Casey acted with the Chicago Stage Guild (where he met Jim Jacobs), the Old Town Players, and the Kinston Mines Theatre. The latter company staged the original production of Grease, which he wrote with Jim Jacobs. After the incredible success of both the musical and the movie, the two collaborated on Island of Lost Coeds, a musical satire of the B-movies of the 1950s. Mr. Casey died in 1988.
