I love seeing all the beautiful leaves start to turn shades of orange and red as we approach fall and winter months. Trees, plants and flowers are vital to our ecological system. All the beautiful flowers and plants in backyards and in local parks across the township are a sign of life as the seasons turn warmer in spring and summer. However, did you know that there are some plants and flowers that actually cause harm to the plants that are native to Indiana? According to Audobon.com, “Native plants are those that occur naturally in a region in which they evolved. They are the ecological basis upon which life depends, including birds and people. Without them and the insects that co-evolved with them, local birds cannot survive.” So you might ask yourself ‘What can I do to help’? Well, it’s easy, work to remove all invasive species (those that are not native to our area like Honeysuckle bush or Callery Pear tree) in your landscape, then we can increase the chances of our beautiful native plants and flowers thriving. If you need assistance, you can reach out to the Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation District at www. hamiltonswcd.org. Sincerely,
Danielle Carey Tolan Westfield Washington Township Trustee

TRUSTEE OF THE
YEAR
Danielle Carey Tolan awarded 2021 Trustee of the Year by Indiana Township Association
I
t is with great pride that we share that our Westfield Washington Township Trustee, Danielle Carey Tolan, was awarded the prestigious honor of Trustee of the Year by the Indiana Township Association at their Annual Conference in September. This award is given to a trustee that has proven themself to be an exceptional trustee that goes above and beyond the traditionally required responsibilities. “I am humbled and honored to receive this distinguished award,” states Danielle. “There are so many trustees across the state of Indiana who have made important contributions to their community and do amazing things to serve their constituents.” During the COVID-19 pandemic, Danielle stepped up as a community leader in many ways including creating a Community Outreach team with Westfield community and nonprofit leaders to ensure that the needs of our residents were being met. She has also worked tirelessly to oversee a federal grant that provides assistance to renters across the county. As the President of the Hamilton County Trustees Association (HCTA), Danielle was given the opportunity to manage the $18 million federal grant for the Hamilton County Emergency Rental Assistance Program (HC ERAP). This program assists renters that have lost income due to COVID-19. Within a short time frame, she secured a team to manage the rental assistance program for the entire county. To date, the HC ERAP has distributed over $5 million in rent and utility assistance to more than 1300 households, allowing these residents to remain in their homes.
"There are so many trustees across the state of Indiana who have made important contributions to their community and do amazing things to serve their constituents.”
Danielle is in her second term as Township Trustee and has worked to create efficien-Danielle Carey Tolan cies in local government to not only streamline the township office but to be a better steward of taxpayer money. Her passion to give to the community has shown as she has strengthened partnerships with over 150 Hamilton County and state service providers. Congratulations Danielle on this honor!
