Clonakilty, often known locally as ‘Clon’ is approximately 45 minutes by road to the west of Cork city. The town is located at the head of the tidal Clonakilty Bay and is surrounded by rolling hills, estuaries and beaches. There’s always something happening in Clonakilty including festivals, music, parades, great shopping and a wide variety of pubs, cafĂŠs and restuarants as well as a cinema and swimming pools. Clonakilty makes a great base from which to explore the locality and the wider West Cork area. BY KIERAN M

has struggled for fitness this year. But the talented Cork athlete is confident that he will be fit and ready to go for his 1,500m heat on August 3. ‘Most other athletes are probably starting to ease up now while I’m pushing harder. What I won’t have is the depth of build-up races in May and June that I would have liked,’ O ‘Lionaird told The Southern Star.

But I will be fresh at the starting line, I’m training well right now and I am managing the injury fairly well. ‘It’s taken a lot longer than I would have liked but I had to make sure that the body was ready to go and was strong enough, and that I wasn’t going to set myself back long-term. ‘I consulted with the doctors here in America and my support staff back at the Irish Institute of Sport in Ireland to make sure that I got the allclear to resume hard training.

Fit: O’Lionaird

O’Lionaird is pencilled in to compete in the 61st Cork City Sports Pre-Olympic International Athletic meeting at the CIT Grounds on Tuesday July 17th, as he steps up his preparations for the Olympics. Based in America, where he trains with the Oregon Track Club Elite in Eugene, Oregon, O’Lionaird expects to run a few warm-up races in Europe in July. ‘It’s not an ideal scenario by

for a while there were talks that I might have to give this year a miss to allow my body to recover from the injury and to make sure that it wasn’t going to be an injury that would ruin the rest of my career. ‘We got all the scans, the tendon healed nicely, from where we were two months ago it progressed a lot better and a lot quicker, and I am fortunate that I am able to give the Olympics my full focus now.’ 0 &( % . #+)", "%* (," -"*! Clonakilty was an official Jungle City in 2012 and over 20 jungle animals are still to be found all over the town. Some, like the elephants and crocodiles are easier to spot but the fun is discovering an exotic bird in a tree or an unusual tiger while you go about your daily shopping or walk around the town.

Clonakilty Church – Stained Glass paradise.

You do not have to be an avid church goer to appreciate a visit to the Clonakilty Church. The architecture and stained glass alone attract so much warranted attention that there are now pamphlets on offer at the church giving visitors details on the glass- which are artworks in themselves.

Timoleague & Courtmacsherry Timoleague is a picturesque village, situated on the Kinsale to Clonakilty coast road (the R600). Perched at the edge of a long sea inlet this friendly tourist village is dominated by the ruins of a 13th century abbey. The abbey was founded by the Franciscan order in 1240 A.D., on the site of a 6th century monastic settlement founded by Saint Molaga. The name Timoleague comes from the Irish for House of Molaga (Tigh Molaga).

Dunworley Beach - Beachcomb for Treasure

After a storm, you may be lucky enough to find one of the coveted blue beads which sometimes get washed up from the depths. The treacherous rocks around the bay caused a few shipwrecks in the past and the beads are thought to come from either the Rover, an Algerian Pirate Ship which sank in 1631 or from the Amity, an African slave ship which sank in 1700 and which was carrying timber, glass and elephant tusks when it went down.

Galley Head Lighthouse – why not stay in a keepers house for a weekend?

Galley Head Lighthouse gives superb views over St. Georges Channel. The Lighthouse was built in 1875 and it was from here that the keepers would have witnessed the tragic loss of the Lusitania in 1915. It is also claimed that Ray Bradbury based his story ‘The Fog Horn’ on a reported sighting of a giant sea serpent off Galley Head in the 1800s. For an authentic experience, why not hire a keepers cottage for the weekend. www.irishlandmark.com/property/galley-head-lightkeepers-house

Castlefreke Woods and Trails

Castlefreke is a gothic ruin which was burnt by Cromwellian forces in 1648. He eventually renounced his title and went to Kenya where he bought a coffee plantation and spent the remainder of his life. The Castlefreke woods are state owned and have a marked trail showing both a linear and a circuit walk.

Long Strand, Dunes and Lighthouse views
