COMMUNITY O’Lionaird: I’ll be ready for Olympics BY KIERAN M

MACROOM Olympian Ciaran O’Lionaird has declared: I’m fresh and focused for the Olympic Games. The 24-year-old 1,500m runner has been troubled by an inflamed left Achilles tendon injury that has disrupted his preparations for the London Olympics that begin in late July, Following on from his breakthrough season last year when he finished tenth at the World Championships, O’Lionaird

has struggled for fitness this year. But the talented Cork athlete is confident that he will be fit and ready to go for his 1,500m heat on August 3. ‘Most other athletes are probably starting to ease up now while I’m pushing harder. What I won’t have is the depth of build-up races in May and June that I would have liked,’ O ‘Lionaird told The Southern Star. ‘A lot of guys will get to the Olympics tired having raced a lot trying to chase times and

other things. But I will be fresh at the starting line, I’m training well right now and I am managing the injury fairly well. ‘It’s taken a lot longer than I would have liked but I had to make sure that the body was ready to go and was strong enough, and that I wasn’t going to set myself back long-term. ‘I consulted with the doctors here in America and my support staff back at the Irish Institute of Sport in Ireland to make sure that I got the allclear to resume hard training.

O’Lionaird is pencilled in to compete in the 61st Cork City Sports Pre-Olympic International Athletic meeting at the CIT Grounds on Tuesday July 17th, as he steps up his preparations for the Olympics. Based in America, where he trains with the Oregon Track Club Elite in Eugene, Oregon, O’Lionaird expects to run a few warm-up races in Europe in July. ‘It’s not an ideal scenario by any means. But it wasn’t an ideal scenario for me either last year, just getting the time be-

fore the World Championships, but it worked out for me there, O’Lionaird said. ‘There are a lot of fellas who have come out on fire this year, in April and May, but are they going to be able to hold that until London? Only time will tell. I am happy that, at least, I have the qualifying time in my back pocket and I can go to London really focused and fresh, and have my training geared towards that specific event. ‘I am still a young athlete and

for a while there were talks that I might have to give this year a miss to allow my body to recover from the injury and to make sure that it wasn’t going to be an injury that would ruin the rest of my career. ‘We got all the scans, the tendon healed nicely, from where we were two months ago it progressed a lot better and a lot quicker, and I am fortunate that I am able to give the Olympics my full focus now.’ 0 &( % . #+)", "%* (," -"*! CORK will not underestimate Offaly in phase two of the AllIreland hurling qualifiers on Saturday July 7th, according to selector Ger Cunningham. ‘We won’t be underestimating Offaly, even if they were well beaten by Galway in the Leinster semi-final, because we know they are a very capable side on their day,’ Cunningham told The Southern Star. ‘What we were looking for www.southernstar.ie/News/Farming primarily was to get a home draw, and we are very pleased that we got it, because a game information and knowledge, White Saturday, S atturd d October 6, 2012 e House and in the g garon the road could have been will pay off in the long run.
