Celebrating Singing Bert McCann

After a great May gathering the Annascaul Singing Club is counting down the days till the start of its 'Celebrating Singing' event due to take place in the village over the weekend of 3rd - 5th June. A great package of free sessions and workshops, special guests and a children's afternoon is coming together and details are available on page 27 of this magazine. We've been adding more singers, performers and a poet or two to the list and the Annascaul Singing Club facebook page will give the latest news. It has been really heartening to hear that the word of the event seems to be resonating around the county. We hope to welcome visitors in numbers and have a great time to boot. Remember it's all free and it will be fun. There are some places still available for the free workshops and the number to call for bookings is also on the Facebook page.

Míle Buíochas ó Fhéile na Bealtaine Ba mhaith le coiste Fhéile na Bealtaine buíochas ó chroí a gabhail le pobal Chorca Dhuibhne agus iad siúd a thánaig chughainn don deireadh seachtaine i mbliana. Thar tréimhse 5 lá bhí os cionn 130 ocáid - idir ceol, rinnce, drama, ealíon, litríocht, ceol agus gan dabht - an drama sráide. Go raibh maith agaibh as an tacaíocht agus an cabhair a thugann síbh dúinn chun an fhéile a rith. The organising committee of Féile na Bealtaine would like to thank all our community on the Dingle Peninsula who helped support the festival this year. The festival simply could not happen without wide community support - and that support is the central element of everything we do. We would like to acknowledge the input of schools, voluntary groups, venue owners, businesses, the broad artistic community and individuals - who offer to help in whatever way possible during the hectic few weeks leading up to, and during the May Bank Holiday weekend. Féile na Bealtaine is run entirely by volunteers - all of the funding (approximately €75,000 this year) goes directly towards the running costs of the festival - performer fees, transport, accommodation, venue fees etc. This year over a five day period there were 135 different events throughout the peninsula. Thank you for coming out to support the many and various gigs - practically all of which were sold out. We would also like to express our gratitude to our sponsors both national and local who are happy to contribute towards the costs of the festival. We would like to thank the Schools in particular and the many dedicated teachers & students who spend hours preparing for the Street Theatre. This central event, led by the Dingle Fife & Drum Band, would not be possible without the dedicated artists who work behind the scenes with each school to produce the spectacular Street Theatre. Féile na Bealtaine aims to engage, provoke, educate, stimulate discussion and entertain all age groups living in the community - We hope you enjoyed this year offerings - work is already underway for 2017! We look forward to your continued support and suggestions on how to improve the festival - we are open to all ideas.

past decade the pair have been cultivating the roots of their musical influences, in songs that delve into love and life through haunting lyrics, soaring harmonies, and dazzling instrumentals. They recently dropped in to Mazz on Green Street for a chat and some tunes, the resulting session can be heard at:

Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights

On Tuesday 31st May the Film Club at the Phoenix Cinema will screen “Louder Than Bombs”. Starring Gabriel Byrne and Jesse Eisenberg the film tracks the fractious family experiences of a father and his two sons as they confront their different feelings and memories of their deceased wife and mother, a famed war photographer. Director Joachim Trier pursues lofty dramatic goals in this note-perfect exploration of death and life and loss. The following week on Tuesday 7th June the feature will be the endearing Icelandic drama “ Rams”. Winner of the Un Certain Regard prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival this charming, stunningly shot drama focuses on two Icelandic sheep farmers whose decades-long feud comes to a head when disaster strikes their flocks. Rams transcends its remote location -- and somewhat esoteric storyline -by using the easily relatable dynamic between two stubborn brothers to speak universal truths.

plants of flowers, shrubs or bulbs will always be appreciated and put to good use in various beds, rockeries and tubs around town. The Work Evenings will visit Upper Main Street on Tuesday next and St James Graveyard the following Tuesday so please support if at all possible.

Richard Williams The Annual Corpus Christi Procession will be held on Sunday next May 29th immediately after 11.30a.m. Mass. The route this year takes in Green Street, Bridge Street, The Mall stopping at the Calvary Monument for prayers and also at An Droichead Beag before returning via Main Street to the Church Courtyard for Benediction and final blessing. The recent Business Chamber Celebration Lunch was attend by over 60 people representing present and former business proprietors from the area. Special guests on the day were Joan and Paudie Fitzgerald to honour his magnificent 1956 Ras Tailteann win and his contribution to the commercial and voluntary contribution to the Dingle Peninsula. The Race Committee presented Paudie with a specially designed plaque and the Business Chamber presented him with a Dingle Crystal Bowl to mark the occasion and well deserved indeed by a true Laoch Chorca Dhuibhne.

I was always a great supporter of the Dragons Den T.V. programme but it really annoys me to hear the Dragons advising the participants to get their produce manufactured abroad as opposed to promoting employment in Ireland. Surely the promotion of foreign employment should not be allowed on prime time T.V. on a Sunday evening when so many of our highly qualified young people have to emigrate to find jobs. I call on the sponsors, R.T.E and the promoters to change the emphasis of the Dragons and at least compel or encourage some local employment with every investment in each programme, Surely this is not too much to ask and could be of immense benefit to many families particularly in rural Ireland. Hope you all agree!!! Slan Tamall .

The Venture Power Boat Race due to stop over in Dingle in mid June has been cancelled due to lack of financial support from the main sponsors. However the redevelopment work at the Pier and adjoining carpark continues and the natural stone finish in the flower beds and entrances are blending in very well with the tradition appearance of the town and Peninsula overall. Well, by now the participants and support teams of the An Post Ras and the Star Wars Film Productions will have packed their bags and exited Corca Dhuibhne. We hope that they all enjoyed their stay and their visits will lead to further positive publicity and prosperity for the area and perhaps many return visits in the years ahead. Tidy Towns Work Evenings continue on Tuesdays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7p.m. Great to see the Residents Associations in the various estates making sure their areas are well kept and as always more help would be appreciated by the organisers. Tom Moriarty of Castlegregory wins in France

Tom Moriarty of Castlegregory and First year student in Meán Scoil Nua an Leith Triúigh represented Ireland with huge success in France last week. Saturday’s race was held in glorious sunshine in France where Tom riding for the National Youth Academy came across the line in 2nd place. Sunday’s race was in Landelles et Coupigny, where the mighty Irish took on the Normandy Champions. Tom took the win comfortably in a sprint finish with two French riders in 2nd and 3rd place. The Irish Youth Academy and Toms cycling club, O Leary Stone Kanturk are thrilled with Toms results. It was great result for Irish cycling and the future is very bright for this teak tough competitor. His trainer Mr. Danny Curtin and indeed his parents Seán and Maura deserve huge credit for the time and support they have given Tom as he follows his dreams.

There will be a competition on the day to win signed copies of the book. The story, written by Mark, and illustrated by Martine, tells the tale of a dog who goes on a quest to rediscover his lost bark. More than two years of hard work has gone into the book, and Martine and Mark are over the moon to finally have it published here in Dingle. The illustrations in the book are based on local scenes, such as Ferriter’s Cove, Sibil Head, and The Sleeping Giant. At the time it was illustrated, they had no idea that the same landmarks would be part of the setting of the upcoming Star Wars film.

Mark is a qualified Marine Biologist, and works as a coastal engineer in England. Mark took his children’s thoughts and opinions into account when writing the book, and involved them throughout the process. Martine owns the “It Must Be Dingle Gallery,” in Ballyferriter, and took inspiration from the area while illustrating the book. “We look forwards to seeing you all at The Dingle Bookshop on Saturday the 28th of May at 1p.m.!” said Martine. “The Dingle Dog Who Lost His Bark” can be purchased online at naughtybirdbooks.com, as well as in the “Dingle Bookshop”, “It Must Be Dingle” and various other shops around the peninsula.

10 egg yolks 60g caster sugar plus 100g for glaze Method Preheat oven to 150º C Put the cream along with the gorse and vanilla in a pot and bring it to a gentle simmer. Once it has heated allow it to cool to infuse. Once infused strain the mixture. Mix the egg yolks and sugar together, add the cream infusion then pass it through a sieve. Place this mixture in a ramekin, put on a tray and place water around ramekins until it comes ¾ way up the ramekin. Cook for 30 minutes until the custard has set - a gentle shake should determine this - if the custard wobbles put it back in the oven for another 5 minutes. Allow to cool. To serve place sugar over the custard and use a blow torch to caramelise the sugar. Enjoy !!!

Ploughing grassland in July and subsequent cultivations can destroy up to 50% of leatherjackets. Dursban* 4 insecticide gives reliable, consistently high levels of control of leatherjackets. It is acknowledged as the standard treatment. The control achieved is such that dry matter yield can by increased by as much as 80%. Treatment with 1.5 L/ha of Dursban 4 before the first signs of damage could save the crop from months of feeding. This will increase the yield response considerably.

Crops identified at risk should be sprayed at the earliest signs of damage. Avoid periods of prolonged frost as pests are less active. Temperatures above 5°C give best results as that is when leatherjackets are near the soil surface. Spray 1.5 L/ha Dursban 4 in 200-1000 litres water. With the chemical option gone to control these pest we have to start looking at alternatives because these pests can devastate new leys if not controlled, but the risks can be avoided through effective cultivations and the use of brassica break crops. The use of fast–establishing hybrid brassicas (such as Swift or Redstart) or Maris Kestrel kale have the added benefits of providing an additional source of high quality grazing, reducing the effect of any forage shortfalls between leys. This can be timed to provide late summer, autumn or even winter grazing for cattle or sheep.” Ploughing and cultivating in summer, and sowing a break crop, will disrupt the life cycle of the crane fly and is known to reduce leatherjacket populations by 50%. Creed Announces €300,000 Grant Scheme for Modernisation of Mart Display Screens The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed TD has announced the opening of a Mart Modernisation Scheme to assist livestock marts in the purchase of new display screens. These will provide real-time information on animals for sale thus allowing farmers ringside in marts to view the ICBF star ratings for beef breeding stock and also EBIs for dairy stock. The marts play a critical role in the trade of animals in Ireland and it’s essential that the purchasers of stock have the most up to date information to inform their buying decisions. This scheme will help to provide this information by linking real-time ICBF data for display on mart screens while animals are in the ring. It will hugely assist farmers in the purchase of breeding stock for participation in the Beef Data Genomics Programme to ensure compliance with the 4&5 star breeding stock requirements of the Programme. It will also allow dairy farmers have up to date information when purchasing breeding stock The implementation of the Beef data and Genomics programme is progressing very well and the 24,000 participants are currently undergoing training on aspects of the scheme. The requirements around replacement strategy are a key component of the scheme and grand-aiding these screens will help farmers to be better informed when making purchasing decisions on 4 and 5 star animals in marts. 12 West Kerry Live

apply online. The increase in online applicants this year to over 100,000 shows that farmers are increasingly recognising the benefits of doing so. Applying online is simple to do, and it has a range of benefits for farmers in terms of reducing application errors and facilitating the more efficient processing of payments under the BPS.

While late applications are still being received in the Department, over 100,700 online applications were received in advance of the deadline. In addition approximately 30,000 paper applications were received. Under EU Regulations, Member States are required to move to 75% online application by 2017 and 100% online application by 2018. A further benefit available to online BPS applicants this year is the introduction of preliminary checks. These preliminary checks will afford online applicants the opportunity to address any dual claims, over claims and overlaps identified on online applications within specified time frames without penalty. Further Push Towards Eradication of BVD Urged There was further calls for a push towards the final eradication of Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD). Incidence of the disease has fallen by 75% since the start of the compulsory programme in 2013 when 0.66% of calves born were PI (Persistently Infected). In 2016 to date, only 0.14% of calves born have been found to be PI. As we are now in this crucial fourth year of the programme, and recognising the significant investment in the project so far, it is critical that we sustain efforts towards the ultimate goal of eradication. The Minister paid tribute to the critical role that farmers have played in progressing the eradication programme through their investment in the testing of in excess of 2 million calves each year since the programme’s inception. He also acknowledged the BVD Implementation Group, chaired by Animal Health Ireland, for its leadership and management of the programme. The Department has put in place certain support arrangements to assist farmers with the early disposal of persistently infected (PI) animals. These supports were proving effective in minimising the number of PI animals being retained on farms. The Department was continuing to restrict the small number of herds where PI animals were retained. This was a particularly robust measure that included a prohibition on the sale and purchase of animals. The Department was also writing to herd owners informing them in instances where they have a neighbour retaining a PI animal. This action was being conducted along the same lines as the notification system that applies in the case of TB breakdowns. These measures were also having a positive impact in reducing the number of retained PI’s. A key study undertaken by the Scottish Agricultural College prior to the commencement of the programme identified that the eradication of BVD would rid the industry of a disease that was costing the farming community some €102m annually. Excerpts From A Dingle Diary

It’s like something out of a James Bond film. It’s a month since the Chernobyl disaster and reports say 21 people have died as a result of the radioactive contamination in the area.

Saturday, May 31.

By Ted Creedon

So much for the weather forecast of ‘a fine weekend’ because it rained cats and dogs all day but the town is very busy with weekenders.

Sunday, May 25, 1986.

The county council put on a spurt to finish the widening of the road at the racecourse bend. It’s much better now and should be safer for all.

Today was Sport Aid Day to raise funds for famine relief in Africa - especially in Ethiopia - and all over the world millions of people took to running to show their solidarity with their African brothers and sisters.

The World Cup got underway this evening with the opening ceremony from Mexico City followed by the first match which saw the holders

It was only possible by the brilliant orchestration of humanity through the medium of television which showed people running in all parts of the planet. Runners set out at 4pm our time - from the dusty heat of Africa to the pouring rain of New Zealand and it looks like millions of pounds will be raised through sponsorship. However, things clashed a bit in America where they organised ‘ Hands across America’ on the same day in aid of poor and homeless people. Sport Aid day follows on from last year’s Live Aid concerts in Britain, America and other countries and Band Aid two years ago. All of these events were the brainchild of Bob Geldof, an uncouth, rebellious singer with The Boomtown Rats. Geldof has adopted the plight of Africans as a crusade and the rebel is hailed as a messiah.

Italy draw 1-1 with Bulgaria. The Italians should have won easily but were over confident and allowed the Bulgarians to score with four minutes to go.

Sunday, June 1. Close, damp and foggy all day. Took the kids to Dún Síon strand after dinner and passed the time throwing stones in the river. Bought a four stone bag of Pinks from Mrs Quinn on the way home. Ballyferriter museum has re-opened for the season and the café is also open now. Across the road Pádraig Lynch’s souvenir shop has also added a café this year. Topping the music charts in the UK lately is The Chicken Song by Spitting Image - what’s the pop world coming to?

Tuesday, May 27. Woke at 2am to the sound of a ferocious gale howling outside - the worst I’d heard in a long time. Encountered many fallen branches and signs as I drove to Ballyferriter. Reports of widespread damage all over the country this morning - more like January than May! The males in this house are looking forward to the World Cup which starts next Saturday night. The females don’t relish the prospect of football on TV night after night for the month of June, especially as no work will get done around the house or garden during that time - any excuse to avoid it!

Wednesday, May 28. Libya is threatening to blow up the Italian island of Lampedusa which is about half way between Malta and Tunisia - and a long way from Italy. The small island has a population of around 4,500 but it also has an American coast guard station and the people are really scared of the Libyan threat.

OPEN 7 Days 12 - Late for Lunch and Dinner

A ferry capsized somewhere in Bangladesh and around 500 people are missing.

Thursday, May 29. My brother-in-law, Tom Sheehy, has been harvesting the silage all week with the help of the Kennedys from Dún Síon and James Leahy from Beenbawn plus three tractors. One tractor powers the harvester which fills a high-sided trailer as it’s cutting. The trailer is dropped and another picked up. The full trailer is then drawn to the silage pit and emptied. Here, one or two people pike and level it while another tractor drives over the silage to compact it. When finished they pour molasses over it to encourage bacteria to break it down and make it more palatable. Then it’s all covered with black plastic and waste tyres. It’s a year since the Heysel Stadium disaster in Belgium where 39 people died when Liverpool fans charged at Italian fans in a match between Liverpool and Juventus. Hundreds were injured and the match went ahead with Juventus winning 1-0.

Friday, May 30. Ógra an Daingin have won the Kerry Youth Clubs magazine competition with their 1986 edition of ‘The Dingle Echo’ which the judges declared to

Doing it Dolly's Way Bert McCann Francis Albert Sinatra, whose anniversary fell earlier this month was perhaps one of the most popular singers and entertainers of his age. Originating from a tough background, his life as a recording artist, film actor and friend of the powerful was punctuated by great acclaim and much controversy. When biographer Kitty Kelley began researching her 1986 biography entitled 'My Way' he used the courts unsuccessfully, to attempt to stop her. Though capable of loyalty to some friends he was it seems difficult, demanding, vengeful and manipulative. Then there were his mafia connections and suspect political behaviour. That he had the drive and talent necessary to achieve success is indisputable. According to Adam Gopnik the New Yorker magazine columnist, 'Sinatra had an astonishing musical intelligence, of a subtlety and soulfulness still unequalled' The singer was the first ever pop-idol and made the US Billboard pop charts 209 times between 1935 and 1980. In addition he was credited with the recording of the first ever concept album, his 'In the Wee Small Hours' issued in 1955. And that work was only one of 56 charted albums. In addition there were two Oscars, eleven Grammys and two Golden Globes. Not forgetting umpteen honours from governments and organisations of one kind or another. However it is something of a miracle that he had such a life. His mother Dolly was a slight 90 pounds and Frank when he arrived in December 1912 weighed over 13 pounds. A most difficult breech birth ensued which left him facially scarred, and as a result he applied make-up to conceal the damage, every day of his adult life. After he was born he was left aside as the attending doctor fought to save his mother's life. His grandmother noticed that he had stopped breathing, lifted him and held him under the running cold-water tap until he began to draw air. Kicking and screaming, the child survived the experience. Dolly too was a survivor. Born, Natalina Maria Vittoria Garaventa she was brought from Genoa to New York by her parents when she was two months old. A pretty child with delicate features she was endowed with her soubriquet as a result . When she was seventeen she met Antonio Martino Sinatra a native of Sicily who went by the name of Marty. When the couple announced their intention to wed Dolly's family was aghast. An illiterate tatooed, Sicilian with ambitions to be a prize-fighter wasn't their idea of a son-in-law. Denied their wishes the pair eloped to Hoboken, New Jersey where they settled. Marty found work as fireman but had a prohibition era part-time job working with so called 'men of respect,' the mob in other words. The new husband's out-of-hours occupation was to protect truckloads of illicit booze from hijackers. But on one occasion he got beaten about the head while preventing a purloining 16 West Kerry Live

of a load and came home and bled all over the kitchen floor. Getting out of that sector of the booze business became priority for the couple. Acquiring a saloon seems to have been no problem despite prohibition. And as a result the pair acquired an Irish dimension to their lives. Marty hankered after a boxing career but at the time the fight game and the associated gyms were controlled by Irish interests. Italians were not welcome. Dolly was making her way in local Democratic politics and was at times allied with Irish politicians who wanted the Italian votes that Dolly could deliver. Consequently the saloon, registered in her name, became Marty O'Brien's tavern and she became for a time Dolly O'Brien. Marty then got back into the boxing ring using his hibernian moniker.. When Frank was christened his mother also carefully chose for him an Irish godfather, a local newspaper employee related to a Hoboken police captain. Useful connections in the city's politics.

rather hypocritical commitment to waging war on the underworld he became an embarrassment and surplus to requirements. The break came when John Kennedy cancelled a visit with Frank at the singer's home in favour of visiting singer Bing Crosby a Republican. Frank was outraged. He took a hammer and destroyed the expensive furnishings that he had installed for the visit. Eventually the relationship with the president healed a little but the friendship was effectively over. Frank moved on with his life and was regularly in the headlines often as a result of public squabbles, temper tantrums and dubious relationships of one kind or another right up to his death in on May 14th 1998. Dolly had died in a plane crash in January 1977. Throughout her son's life her influence was indelible. On more than one occasion he remarked that she terrified the life out of him and he needed her approval. It also seemed to be a feature of his character that he craved involvement with women who emulated his mother. This led to several romantic disasters. Dolly herself acknowledged their similar natures and according to Kelley was fond of saying that Frank was just like her, 'You cross him and he never forgets'.

She reputedly became a formidable figure in the local democratic party and she also held open house for local gangsters. Dolly, according to J Randy Taraborrelli whose biography of Sinatra was published in 2015, was a hell-raiser, and a go-getter. Kitty Kelley describes her as Sinatra, for all his fame and fortune, never fell being the possessor of the filthiest tongue in far from the maternal tree. the neighbourhood. On the other hand she acquired a reputation as a suffragette chaining herself to the town hall door on one occasion and advocating for women's right to vote. She was also a local midwife and sometime abortionist when requested. Frank was product of this environment and as he built his acting and singing career he move easily between those different worlds. In 1959, the Kennedy clan came into his life via his pal Peter Lawford husband of John Fitzgerald Kennedy's sister Rose. Frank got involved in meetings in the actor's Fully house. The aim of these gatherings was build support in California for Insured Irish-American JFK's bid for the White House in 1961. The presidential aspirant for his part was starstruck and enjoyed the access that the singer afforded him to Hollywood life. Frank got committed to campaign fund-raising and was for a All Cleaning Work time a treasured member of the Undertaken politician's entourage. It didn't last though. There were complex links joining a number of players. Sinatra, his buddy infamous Chi• Pressure Washing cago gangster Sam Giancana and JFK had affairs in common with several woman. Kennedy needed the help of Giancana in gaining electoral advantage particularly in 087-4622989 West Virginia by utilising his mob contacts and Frank was the neces087-3496915 sary go-between. www.ccsKerryCleaning.ie When JFK was elected Sinatra hankered after an ambassadorship. ‘After Sarah Miles’ returns to Dingle and Killorglin

Gáirdín Mhuire Centre Green Street , Dingle

West Kerry playwright and actor Michael Hilliard Mulcahy is taking his one man play ‘After Sarah Miles’ on the road for four more shows in early June. After Sarah Miles is a one hour fifteen minute solo performance that chronicles 35 years in the life of ‘Bobeen’, a Dingle fisherman whose first job (as a fourteen year old) is on the set of Ryan’s Daughter, where Robert Mitchum buys him his very first drink and Sarah Miles is the subject of his first serious crush. Bobeen still longs for the American dream long after the film crew pull out of town, however life becomes a bit of rollercoaster until one faithful evening when a bottlenose dolphin guides his boat into Dingle bay…. The play was first performed by actor Don Wycherley to rave reviews. Emer O’ Kelly of the Sunday Independent calling it ‘a lilting wonderof exquisite exploration’. The Sunday times gave it a 4 star thumbs up as did the Sunday business post among other national papers and online reviewers

Yes with no sunshine, Fáilte roimh cách. you ask how! Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost. Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

An Ecologist’s View on Beach Cleans Ann-Marie Henderson Education Officer, Dingle Oceanworld Aquarium What better way to enjoy the recent weather than a nice stroll on the beach. Unfortunately, Kerry’s beautiful beaches are affected with rubbish and dog waste. If you own a dog it is your responsibility to clean up after them, not just bury it in the sand. In a county with high tourism rates, it is very important we maintain Kerry’s incredible scenery and landscapes. Over the past few months, you may have noticed or took part in the Big County Clean up or Clean Coasts Beach Cleans. Many people say fair play for doing it but we should all be inspired to take action and take part. We should continue to keep the cleaning going, even if just for a quick two minute clean up. It can be very easy to ignore the blowing crisp bag because it wasn’t yours but the more people picking up rubbish shows just how much we care about our country and sets a more positive image for visitors and encourages children to do the same. Not to mention the reduced harmful impacts on our environment. 80% of our waste is ending up washed or blown into the sea, having detrimental impacts on our marine wildlife, according to WWF (World Wildlife Fund). We don’t notice until we see an entrapped animal or see it washed up on the beach. You may have noticed more Loggerhead turtles, Caretta caretta, washed up during the winter storms in both the UK and Ireland. A recent survey, by the All Ireland Coastwatch Survey 2015, showed that the majority of rubbish spotted by local surveyors was plastic bottles, plastic bags, tyres and tin cans. These take from 10 to 450 years to decompose while having continuous wildlife and environmental impacts. Fishing gear was next in line which takes 600 years to decompose. On my last Brandon Bay Beach Clean event, the majority of rubbish we collected was rope and fishing nets. Even the smallest portion of rope can accidently injure wildlife such as birds, or even our domestic animals. So it is important we do our part to keep rubbish to a minimum and so you don’t accidently walk on something nasty while enjoying your walk on the beach or countryside. As part of Clean Coasts, I have organized another beach clean on Friday, 27th May 2016 at Ventry Beach at 11 am. I hope many of you can make it and do your part. For further information regarding pollution or to view many interesting wildlife species, you may like to visit Dingle Oceanworld Aquarium for an interactive education experience. I will be carrying out regular litter presentations here throughout the summer and please keep an eye out for future beach cleans in your area!

Alan Joins An Exclusive Club

When Alan Creedon, from Dingle, decided to walk from Manchester to his home town in memory of his sister Aoife he never imagined he would be joining an exclusive club along the way. Very few people have crossed the Irish Sea in a double kayak and that's not surprising after hearing Alan's account of the challenge. He walked from Manchester to Holyhead in nine days and met up with senior kayak instructor Mike Alexander. The pair set out in a double kayak from a small beach near Holyhead on Sunday, May 15, and arrived in DĂşn Laoghaire 22 hours later. "Conditions were very good starting out but it changed after a few hours and we had to battle our way through choppy seas and driving spray in our faces for hours on end. But it calmed down again later," he told West and mid-Kerry Live this week. At one point they had a close encounter with a denizen of the deep. "The sea was dead calm but we were suddenly hit by a wave from behind. We thought that maybe a ship had sneaked up on us or something. Then we saw the waterspout as the whale blew when it half surfaced. I'm not sure what species it was but it was an amazing experience," he said. They kept a close eye on shipping during the night and their only lights were small lamps on their heads. "We could see the lights of Dublin when were at least six hours away. We were exhausted by then and our spirits were low so we took to singing in turn and together. This brought back our focus and our determination to reach our goal," Alan said. "The most difficult part of the whole trip was trying to get into Dublin Bay because of tidal currents - it took us two hours of exhausting work to make it in to DĂşn Laoghaire harbour," he explained. Alan lost a stone in weight (6.3kgs) during the crossing. Mike Alexander took the ferry and his kayak back to Wales that morning and Alan spent three days recovering in Dublin before setting out for Dingle via the Grand Canal to Tullamore. He stayed with friends and cousins along the way and, at the time of writing this week, he had arrived in Munster. He will be walking the coast road from Limerick through Foynes, Tarbert, Listowel and Tralee and expects to reach Dingle by Friday, June 3. His sister Susan is flying in from Geneva to walk with him from Tralee. Alan is collecting for two charities as part of his quest; Manchester Mind and the Dingle Camphill Community. "People have been so supportive with food, accommodation and with donations to to the website www.walkforaoife.com, and I've met so many interesting people along the way," he said.

Biodiversity & Wildflower Survey Workshops

Greta's Herbs Greta McCarthy, O’Brien

followed by a Wildflower Walk Tue 31st May & 7th June

This article is targeted at the novice herb gardener. Many people are unaware that herbs are extremely easy to grow and that they possess more attributes than most other plants. Their use in the kitchen is well known but as garden plants they are also highly aesthetic - producing scented foliage in various colours and many nectaroozing flowers which are far prettier than one imagines!

Contact: Darach, domurchu@hotmail.com or 087-2153758 Cost €5 per workshop / donation.

Choosing a suitable location in your garden, providing adequate soil conditions and purchasing good quality hardy plants are keys to success. Careful watering, particularly in the first few weeks, is crucial to aid the establishment of young plants. After that, most are relatively resilient and disease-free and will grow happily for many years! I like to categorise herbs into groups. The first being the culinary or kitchen varieties - those that can withstand our coastal climate include oregano, fennel, lemon balm, rosemary, salad burnet and bay leaf! There is a vast selection of mints, I recommend starting with Moroccan or spearmint, apple and chocolate mint. They are extremely invasive (spreading everywhere) so restrict by lining the planting holes with polythene or grow in containers. All of the above are perennials and will grow year after year; forming the mainstay of your herb garden. Trickier varieties such as sage and thymes may also be grown, however they do not like our wet winters and prefer to be planted in terracotta pots, the addition of sand will aid drainage! Basil and coriander are annual herbs which only last a few months and are also more suited to pot culture. The second group are salad herbs; i.e. wild rocket, nasturtium and parsley - along with oriental greens such as mizuna and red mustard. These give lots of tasty, spicy leaves which need to be harvested when young. They are as easy as lettuce to grow and don't suffer the same onslaught of slug attacks! They can be added sparingly to salads or used in stir-fry dishes. The final group are the ornamental and medicinal varieties. These add interest and colour to the herb garden and comprise a long list! As a beginner, try lavenders, curry plant, lupins, aquilegias, gold feverfew, borage, calendula and oriental poppies. Finally, many ornamental shrubs and climbers are used in the manufacture of cosmetics and are therefore classed as herbs. To create a colourful eye-catching boundary around your herb patch, grow climbing roses, honeysuckle, sweet peas or morning glory! There is nothing more intoxicating to the senses than a beautiful herb garden: waiting to be harvested and waiting to be glorified!" Nature’s Knowledge

fever season hits in will help to allay this tiresome problem. The leaves of the plantain can be taken as a tea, in salads, dried and made into a tincture. If the leaves turn black when drying discard.

Healing with Herbs

Deirdre Daly Spring and indeed early summer as we are now in, is a time of hope and renewal as the countryside begins to reveal its hidden bounty and young plants begin to emerge. Harvesting wild plants for food or medicine is one of life’s great pleasures and now is a good time to pick some of the young tender leaves to add to your salads, to juice as a spring tonic or/ and to dry and preserve for the winter months. This article will look at the goodness of nettles, the cleansing power of the cleaver and dandelion leaf, the relaxing nature of the hawthorn leaf and blossom and the healing power of plantain amongst others. Those of you who faithfully read all my articles will notice the repetition regarding some of the herbs below but a little reminder of what to look out for when you are out walking or simply doing some clearing in the garden will not go amiss. Don’t forget to leave some of these valuable ‘weeds’ for the birds and bees and of course for future propagation. A recent article in one of the weekend supplements reminds us, for example, of the need to leave some dandelions in your garden for the bees as these are the first flowers they will encounter when they emerge from the hive after a long winter. The same goes for many other ‘weeds’, which are all part of the necessary biodiversity integral to our survival. Herbal medicine is effective and part of the pleasure in using what is on your own doorstep is that sense of caring for the environment and for yourself. Taking ownership of your own health is empowering and fun. Harvest only what you need and know you will use and never pick more than one third of any cluster of plants. Never pick a plant if it is the only one in sight, pick only healthy looking plants and do not pull from the roots picking only some of the leaves or blossoms. The leaves and blossoms are best harvested in the spring and summer and the roots harvested in the autumn when the goodness of the plant goes back into the roots as the plant prepares for hibernation. In no particular order I will start with the wild garlic, which has become very popular in recent years for foodies. Where this herb grows it can be abundant but before I discuss this herb I do want to clear up a little matter. The three cornered leek Allium triquetrum abundantly growing in our hedgerows at the moment is frequently mistaken for wild garlic. If you have made your pesto already with this herb do not panic, it is from the allium family and can be taken internally. It is however not wild garlic which can be identified by its significantly broader leaf and star like flowers.

Cleaver, Gallium aparine, is another of our wonderful spring tonics helping to clear the lymphatic system by stimulating the circulation of lymph and helping to disperse glandular swelling. I read some time ago that if your lymph system is healthy you cannot become ill. Burdock, marigold and echinacea are also good lymphatic herbs. Juicing gallium is a very effective way of taking this herb and while you’re at it you could add some dandelion leaves and nettles to the mix giving your body a real treat. The hawthorn blossom, Crataegous laevigata, appearing now on our hawthorn trees is a wonderful heart tonic and can be taken as a tea infusion along with the leaves. Hawthorn also acts as a sedative to the nervous system and will help to relieve mild to moderate hypertension. The berries appearing in the autumn can be picked for the above medicinal uses. Dandelion, Tarax officinalis, is one of the primary diuretic herbs due to its high potassium content, which helps to prevent potassium depletion in the body as fluids are eliminated. Dandelion is good for all types of water congestion with oedema and will also help to rid the body of uric acid which gives rise to painful joints and arthritis type conditions. The root picked in the autumn is a valuable hepatic and a great tonic for the liver. The young dandelion leaves are less bitter than their elder variety and can be picked as an addition to your mixed salad leaves, taken as a tea infusion and made into a tincture. Soon our hedgerows will be abundant with all manner of wonderful flowers and foliage. For now the above herbs are perfectly sufficient for our needs many providing that much needed tonic as we prepare for a wonderful busy summer of fun, work and importantly caring for ourselves. Caution: Do not self-diagnose or self-treat for serious or long-term conditions without first consulting a qualified herbal or medical practitioner. Deirdre is a qualified herbalist and can be contacted at, ‘Nature’s Knowledge’, Lower Main Street, Dingle, for advice, treatments and consultations. Email: daly.deirdre9@gmail.com

Wild garlic, Allium ursinum, will have many of the properties of garlic and though somewhat weaker in its actions is still a wonderful food medicine helping to lower blood pressure and reduce cholesterol. Wild garlic also has anti-viral and antioxidant properties and as an anti-coagulant herb will help thin the blood, so do exercise caution if on blood thinning medication or due to undergo surgery. As a food wild garlic is a big favourite with pesto experts and it can make a wonderful pesto, which will keep for a number of weeks in your fridge. The leaves, flowers and root bulb can be used. Nettle, Urtica dioca, is a great blood tonic and is an important spring tonic revitalising the body after the winter as it strengthens our natural resistance. Nettles are high in vitamin C and contain calcium, iron and silica. Nettle also has anti-allergenic properties and can be used for conditions such as asthma and hay fever. Nettle similar to dandelion helps to remove uric acid from the body, which helps to alleviate rheumatic and arthritic type conditions. Now is a good time to pick those young nettle tips which can also make a nice pesto, soup or tea infusion. A tincture of the young nettle tips can be made, which will keep for up to five years if stored in a cool dark place. Most herbs can be dried successfully and are best dried out of the sun tying the herb in small bundles to allow the air to circulate freely. Crumble and store in brown bags in a cool dry place. Plantain, Plantago lanceolata, is rich in minerals and promotes tissue repair making this herb useful for internal problems such as ulcers and internal bleeding due to its healing and astringent action. It is also good for resolving phlegm and relieving coughing and wheezing. Plantain has an antihistamine effect and is useful in allergy type problems such as hay fever and rhinitis. Nettle and plantain taken as an infusion before the hay

From West Kerry To The Battle Of Jutland Patrick O’ Connor 1873 – 1916.

Mícheál Ó Conchúir The poverty, hunger and turmoil of late 19th century scattered the young men of Ireland in various directions. One of the paths well trodden, though less celebrated, was a career in the British Navy. The British Fleet regularly visited Ventry Harbour in West Kerry to recruit seamen. The hardworking, honest young men of the area usually had a good knowledge of the sea and seafaring and were well thought of by Naval Command. In 1890 the Navy called again to Ventry and Patrick O’ Connor of Cahernapuka, on the high road between Dingle and Ventry, made his way to Cuan Pier and signed up and the age of seventeen. He worked as a stoker feeding coal into steam boilers. Little is known of his seafaring until 1916 when he sailed with the British to confront the German High Seas fleet at the Battle of Jutland. This was the only naval confrontation of World War 1 and the last naval battle ever fought. The battle ended in stalemate as the British failed to make their superiority in terms of ships and firepower count losing more ships and twice as many sailors as the Germans, but the Germans themselves retreated to port and were never again a factor in the war. No nation today has a battleship which would only present as an unmissable target for the accurate and devestating weaponry of the modern age. Patrick O’ Connor sailed into battle at Jutland as chief stoker on H.M.S. Defence with eccentric Rear Admiral Sir Robert Arbuthnot at the helm. Both navys had plans of attack but judging the size and number of the opposition was largely guesswork in those days and usually based on the number and size of the smoke lines from the chimney stacks. H.M.S. Defence rushed ahead and out of formation in an attempt to engage a disabled German light cruiser. Arbuthnot had blundered badly and was now in the space between the fleets where he was struck by two salvos from the German heavy ships which detonated Defences rear magazine. The fire spread quickly to secondary magazines, all of which exploded, to blow the ship apart with the loss of her entire crew, all 903 men. There were no survivors. Patrick O Connor breathed his last and departed this earth on the 31st of May exactly

one hundred years ago amidst that horrible carnage. In a recent lecture, given by Joe O’Toole at Pobal Scoil Chorca Dhuibhne, the Irish men of 1916 on both sides of the struggle were celebrated. Joe argued that all of them, be they rebels in green or Irishmen in British Army uniforms were motivated by a desire to win freedom and Home Rule for Ireland. John Redmond, he said urged his countrymen to ''account for themselves as men, not only for Ireland itself, but wherever the fighting line extended, in defence of right, of freedom, and religion in this war”. For Patrick O Connor there were no such noble motives. He was one of ten siblings reared on a small farm. His brother Michael inherited the farm. The other brothers and sisters all made their way to America via Liverpool and the passage cost 14 pounds. Patrick could not raise the money and the British Navy could satisfy his hunger, offer a satisfying job and would pay a pension after 20 years service on reaching at least 40 years of age. It was an attractive proposition and he embraced it. Unfortunately for him the drums of war were throbbing just as he reached the end of his Naval contract. He was retained in his position and finding himself in Jutland on May 31st 1916 , he crossed that great divide from where no man can return. ''He died for freedom and honour'' states the medal dipicting Britannia, a lion and his name. There is no grave to mark his passing. We can remember him as one who received very little easily in life and yet he gave his all. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

Well as all our cyclists were getting a much deserved rest before Stage 4 of An Post Rás 2016 and the glorious start on Main Street, Dingle to a finish in Sneem on Wednesday, we'd like to thank everyone for all their help, assistance and the great support for all Riders, Teams, Marshals, An Post Rás 2016 Organisers and yearly Rás Followers. As the last light was leaving Dingle Bay and around Corca Dhuibhne it put me thinking that perhaps it was fitting that James Gullen of Pedal Heaven RT won this stage in what we know is Pedal Heaven. Also Jai Hindley of Team Australia moved into the best Young Riders Jersey. Maybe it was fitting as a reminder of the young men who tried to compete for Team Ireland in Broadmeadows, at the Melbourne Olympics 60 years ago in 1956 - Tom Gerrard and Tom Flanagan both from Navan, County Kildare and Paudie Fitzgerald of Lispole, County Kerry. What a few days, not sure I will ever forget the effort of all who helped, tolerated and thanked us. The Rás is probably the most important thing for all our Family every year. To see how the people of Dingle, Lispole, West Kerry and Kerry rallied to make it so special is humbling. Thank you one and all. We are all so proud to have brought An Post RÁS 2016 to Dingle, and to get that level of support makes it all more special. Maybe these days and with the level of professionalism, dedication and commitment we all forget that it is the taking part and the enjoyment that we get from our chosen sports that must and always drive us on. Wishing all Riders, Counties and Countries in this An Post Rás 2016 the very best. Special thanks to An Garda Síochána, Red Cross and all Motorbike Outriders who ensure that both Riders and Supporters enjoy An Post Rás 2016 safely. Míle buíochas - Patrick Fitzgerald – Fitzgerald’s Centra Dingle - Chairperson Local James Gullen of team Pedal Heaven heading up Main Street in Dingle towards the finish line of stage three of the An Post Rás on Organising Committee – An Post RÁS 2016

2016 Bhí an aimsear linn i rith na míosa seo agus, mar sin, is dócha go bhfuil cuma maith ar na prátaí agat, ar a laghad ar na gais. Agus gan dabht tá do phlean i do cheann agat maidir leis An Práta Pláta. Arís i mbliana, tá duais €200 don buaiteóir, agus €100 don dara ‘s don triú áit, urraithe ag Bórd Bia, sa chomórtas An Práta Pláta. Agus don céad uair i mbliana, comh maith leis na trophies atá urraithe ag Radio na Gaeltachta, beidh duais airgeadais €200 ag dul go Laoch an Phráta, agus duaiseanna eile don dara ‘s don triú ait. So it will be worth your while having a go at these competitions. We urge growers and cooks (non-professional) to support An Féile by taking part, and we urge the two larger population centres, Daingean Uí Chúis and Baile an Fheirtearaigh, where we know there are many growers and cooks, to support us. There was great demand from contestants in An Práta Pláta last year, so we expect even more this year. For that reason, we are closing applications on 20th June, so if you are interested, give in your name early to Elaine Lyne (0861006046), Caroline Kearney (0877768091) or Noreen McSweeney (0863861596). Our Elusive Native Otter Louise Overy (Dingle Oceanworld Aquarium) This year (2016) has been named the year of the Otter in an aim to raise awareness about the plight of the 13 species of Otter worldwide. This brief article will hopefully entice you into the fascinating world of Otters and share some of the basics about the Irish Otter. For more information or if you would like to help the Irish Otter there will be an Otter workshop held in Dingle Aquarium on Sunday the 29th May. Otters are part of the Mustelid family of animals which also includes badgers, pine martens and weasels, this family if particularly recognisable for their large scent gland which is used primarily for marking their territories. They have found traces of Otters dating back 5 million years and over the years they have undergone subtle changes to their carnivore bodies to adapt to the diverse aquatic environment, in comparison humans have only been around for the past 2.5 million years! Otters can be found all over the world, the only two places they haven’t been found is Antartica and Australia. An Madra Uisce Not many of us have been privileged enough to see our Native Otter but those who have will never forget the secretive glance they caught of one of these large otters. The Irish Otter is also known as the Eurasian Otter (Lutra lutra) or Madra Uisce in Irish. The Male Otter can reach up to 90cm long and can weigh up to 11kg, the female is a little smaller at 80cm, weighing in around 7kg. The otter is brilliantly designed for their aquatic lifestyle and can easily hold their breath for 40 seconds in the search for food. They are opportunistic predators and their diet is largely dependent on their territory and the seasons. Their diet is very broad and varied, as they will eat a wide variety of fish from sticklebacks to species as large as a salmon if they can catch one. They will also eat a wide variety of molluscs and crustaceans such as cockles, crabs, river crayfish and they will even eat frogs, rats, mice and carrion. They use both their brilliant eyesight and plethora of whiskers to catch their prey. The Otter is incredibly streamlined in the water and can twist and turn with amazing agility, out of the water their run resembles a bound with their head close to the floor. They are not very vocal but they will emit a range of whistles, clicks and chuckles to communicate with other Otters particularly during the mating season. Otters can mate in Ireland all year round however they primarily mate in the spring and summer to give their pups the best chance of survival. Their gestation period takes around two months and they generally give birth to a litter of 1-5 pups, the pups are born with fur 34 West Kerry Live

but they do not open their eyes for around 5 weeks. The pups will stay in the holt with their mother as she continues to nurse them until they are capable and agile hunters but once they are weaned they may still remain with her for up to a 18 months. Male Otters are commonly referred to as Boars, the females as Sows and the young are known as pups. Current Distribution Otters are believed to have come to Ireland at the end of the last ice age around 10,000 years ago with evidence of their bones being found in Bronze Age sites dated from 4,000 years ago. The species is now present throughout the island of Ireland and can occupy any habitat area which has either a fresh or saltwater source. They have also spread into urban areas with the creation of canals and other artificial water bodies. As they are so elusive it is not known how many individuals there are per square kilometre but best estimates put their numbers at 4 individuals per km2 in good freshwater habitats like those found around midland lakes and at 1 per km2 along the coast. Conservation Issues The Eurasian otter is in decline everywhere in their traditional home ranges however in Ireland we have one of the densest populations. Most populations of otters in Europe are listed as being near threatened, in decline or extinct making the Irish population all the more important. The practice of hunting and trapping is now banned but the destruction of their habitats, human disturbance and falling water quality levels are a threat to the Irish otter population. Humans are currently the main cause of otter death due to increased road traffic and the accidental drownings of coastal otters in lobster pots and fish nets. Dogs also account for a number of otter cub deaths each year. Competition for resources is increasing due to the spread of the American mink, this is particularly detrimental as they both require similar food sources. Reflecting its importance the Eurasian otter is a strictly protected species under Irish, EU and international legislation. Where to see one? Otters around coastal habitats are often seen out during the daytime more frequently than the river otters but many cities such as Cork are becoming important habitats for the Otter and there are groups such as the Cork Nature Network monitoring these populations. They are very elusive creatures and one of the best ways to investigate if they are using a waterway is to look for spraints (droppings). They deposit their droppings on various river landmarks (such as under bridges or on large rocks) in the waterway to mark their territory and to identify themselves. Some say that you can tell the difference between an otter spraint and a mink spraint as the otter spraint smells like Jasmine tea and is slightly fishy whereas the mink droppings are quite pungent! You can also keep an eye out for their footprints

www.westkerrylive.ie

How can you help? As with everything, you can also help raise awareness by spreading the word. Tell your friends and family! You can also support the local work for the European Otters by reporting sightings, protecting their habitat and protecting their food supply! If you do see an otter make sure to report it to natureconservation@:environ.ie And of course you can help in all areas by simple steps such as Reduce, Reuse and Recycle and turning off that light switch! If you would like to find out more about Otters, Dingle Oceanworld aquarium have organised an event to celebrate World Otter day on Sunday the 29th May 2016: Below are a list of events on the day: 1. Dr Paddy Sleiman from UCC and Dr Karen Loxton from TCD will be giving a workshop on how to survey for the Native Irish Otter followed by a trip down to the local river to have survey for Otters around Dingle. This is a free event but donations are welcome and all donations will be given to the IOSF (International Otter survival Fund) 2. Children’s otterly fantastic treasure hunt with great prizes! 3. Children’s puppet shows and face painting throughout the day 4. Other children’s activities will include: Pin the tail on the otter, guess the number of peanuts in the jar, guess the weight of our otter and make your own otter mask 5. There will also be feeding displays and talks throughout the day with our new members to the Oceanworld family, our six Asian Short Claw Otters!

Championship Preview

worse, and that’s all that matters. They’ll surely face the sky blues at the semi-final stage of this year’s competition, and I wouldn’t bet against the Kingdom leading at the sixty minute mark.

Tadhg Evans After the soggy pity that was Championship 2015, hurling and football have a lot of making up to do to their loyal followers. It’s a pity then that this year’s competitions have opened with two weekends that even a man with a photographic memory will have already forgotten. We used to wait excitedly for May, and the first throw-ins of the summer, but now it’s accepted that Championship unofficially begins in August – particularly if you prefer the big ball to its more glamorous sister. But May still seems to be the deadline for submission of predictions, and with that in mind I’d better let you know which counties all the major trophies will be visiting in the next few months. Munster football: I’ve more than an inkling that our wait for the Tipperary’s footballers is the GAA’s version of waiting for a bus that’ll never arrive. For all their promising underage successes, their young footballers have struggled to cope with the additional demands made by the senior game, and a disappointing league campaign doesn’t serve up confidence in their prospects of breaking the hegemony of Cork and Kerry in the least democratic provincial championship of them all. Cork have been dominated by Kerry in Munster over the last three years, and their relegation from Division One is probably indicative of where the rebels are at right now. Verdict: Kerry to complete a four-in-a-row in Munster. Connacht football: Roscommon seem have joined Monaghan in a club for counties that are nowhere near as good as the country’s top four or five, but far better than everyone else. Their league form had laid the foundation for the hype that seems to stalk them ahead of every Championship now, but when face-to-face with Kerry in Croke Park on league semi-final day, they blinked before the clock even started ticking.

But what Dublin did in the last ten minutes of the league final was eerily similar to what they did in the 2011 All-Ireland final and that famous 2013 semi-final. That’s when their superiority over every team in the country becomes really, really obvious. Mayo could cause them more bother than they’d like, but they too were robbed by a late Dublin raid last summer. Dublin can be beaten, but they probably won’t be. Verdict: Dublin Munster hurling: Cork’s decline was painfully evident in falling flat on the drenched Thurles turf last Sunday, and they’ve now descended to the seabed of Munster hurling. Limerick will be smarting after yet another failed attempt to win promotion to the top tier of the hurling league, and it’s reasonable to assume that they’re considerably less likely to win this competition than Tipperary, Waterford or Clare. Tipperary are still nursing the mental wounds inflicted by narrow failure after narrow failure, and therefore it might be worthwhile placing your faith in the promise-laden Waterford, or taking not of Clare’s uncanny impression of Lazarus. Verdict: Clare Leinster hurling: It’s that time of year again when everyone pretends that they believe that league form suggests that Kilkenny’s decline is imminent. And it’s as wayward an assumption today as it was in 2015, 2014, or many other years that Liam eventually went Noreside. Last year, the Cats simply ‘couldn’t get over the loss of many key players’, before they got over the loss of many key players and won the All-Ireland despite only having to test their speedometer in the second half of the All-Ireland final.

They’re obviously better than their near death experience on their recent trip to New York suggests, but they have acres of ground to make up if they want to ankle tap a Mayo outfit that didn’t even bother to feign interest in the 2016 league.

They remain the team to beat, and even though I’ve a suspicion that Waterford and Clare are becoming more prominent in their rear view mirrors, I still fancy Kilkenny to find another gear or two when they’ll need to do so.

Verdict: Mayo to win a sixth Nestor Cup in succession.

Verdict: Kilkenny to complete a three-in-a-row in both the Leinster and All-Ireland championships.

Ulster football: Conor McManus is so good that his fading Monaghan counterparts can still go into the summer with hopes of ordering another set of medals from the Ulster Council, but it’s probably best to look elsewhere on the sheet to find the most likely winners of the last competitive provincial championship in football. Tyrone impressed in humiliating Derry last Sunday, and they have quite rightly been touted as the best team in Ulster. Donegal have in recent year been the annoying little stone rattling around in their football boots, but Rory Gallagher looks to be plotting with chess pieces that have lost their gloss since Jim McGuinness’ reign. Verdict: Tyrone to be crowned Ulster champions for the first time since 2010. Leinster football: Why waste ink? Verdict: Dublin will stroll to an eleventh title in twelve years. All-Ireland football: Having cooled down since the disappointment of being crushed by the mighty Dubs in the league final, I’ve gone back to my old habit of looking for positives. And they’re not that hard to find. Kerry stood their ground for sixty minutes, despite being asked to push against against the slickest piece of machinery in the GAA, even though they were reduced to just fourteen men for a not unsubstantial period of time. Some of the Kingdom’s best players couldn’t even tog out for the occasion.

Knee Pain, Adolescents, and Osgood-Schlatter disease Eddie O’ Grady Osgood-Schlatter disease is an inflammation of the bone, cartilage and/or tendon at the top of the tibia (shinbone; ie. just under the knee), where the tendon from the kneecapattaches. It presents as a painful lump below the kneecap. It usually strikes active adolescents during growth spurts which can begin any time between the ages of 8 and 13 in girls, 10 and 15 years in boys, basically during puberty. Growth spurts make kids vulnerable because their bones, muscles, and tendons are growing quickly and not always at the same time. With exercise, these differences in size and strength between the muscle groups place unusual stress on the growth plate at the top of the shinbone (A growth plate is a layer of cartilage near the end of a bone where most of the bone’s growth occurs. It is weaker and more vulnerable to injury than the rest of the bone). While Osgood-Schlatter disease is more common in boys, the gender gap is narrowing as more girls become involved in sports. Osgood-Schlatter disease affects as many as 1 in 5 adolescent athletes. Teens increase their risk if they play sports involving running, twisting, and jumping, such as basketball, football, volleyball, soccer, tennis, figure skating, and gymnastics etc. Doctors disagree about the mechanics that cause the injury but agree that both overuse and physical stress are involved. Most parents call the doctor after their child complains of intermittent pain over several months. Signs and symptoms of Osgood-Schlatter disease: •

Pain that worsens with exercise

Relief from pain with rest

Swelling or tenderness at the bony prominence under the knee and over the shinbone

Limping after exercise

Tightness of the muscles surrounding the knee (the hamstring sometimes but particularly the quadriceps muscles)

The pain varies from person to person. Some have only mild pain while performing certain activities. For others, the pain is nearly constant and can be debilitating. The good news is that Osgood-Schlatter disease (OSD) is far less serious than its name suggests. Though it is one of the most common causes of knee pain in adolescents, it is really not a disease, but an overuse injury. The condition is self limiting and usually resolves itself within 12 to 24 months. A similar condition, ”Sever’s disease” occurs in children of the same age group down at the achilles tendon attachment and presents as heel pain. Again the condition is self limiting and the same treatment protocols apply.

cation of activities is generally the best and most cost effective course of treatment. References: Brukner P, Khan K. Clinical Sports Medicine. 4th ed. Sydney: McGraw-Hill, 897-898, 2011

While there is no evidence that rest accelerates the healing process, a reduction in activity usually reduces the pain. There is no need to rest completely. Pain should be the main guide as to limitation of activity. Tightness in the quadriceps muscles may predispose to this condition. The athlete should commence a stretching program. Some massage therapy on the quadriceps can be tried. Pain also can sometimes be relieved by icing the painful area (ice in wet towel) for 10 minutes at a time. Correction of any biomechanical abnormality, such as excessive subtalar pronation (feet turn out while running) should also be considered. Osgood-Schlatter disease – Summary To sum up, this is basically a self limiting condition that adolescents generally grow out of (Brukner and Khan, 2011). Some stretching exercises and modifi-

West Kerry GAA Breandán Fitzgerald Garvey’s SuperValu Kerry Senior Football Championship 2016 Well after this weekend of the Garvey’s SuperValu Kerry Senior Football County Championship 2nd Round games both West Kerry’s and Dingle’s Kerry County Championship dreams are still very much alive. Francie Dorgan’s West Kerry Senior Football Team travelled to Kilcummin last Saturday evening where they fought back from a half time deficit of, Kilcummin 1-8 to West Kerry 0-4. A couple of switches at half time and some mighty words from the management team worked a treat and from the restart Eanna Ó Conchúir scored a goal that started the West Kerry comeback. A great team performance by the valiant men of West Kerry ensured that when Referee Patrick Sheehy blew the final whistle the scoreboard read, Kilcummin 1-10 to West Kerry 1-15.

and when Referee Tom Moriarty blew the final whistle the scoreboard read, Mid Kerry 3-14 to Dingle 2-15. Francie Dorgan’s West Kerry Senior Football Team and Paul Fitzmaurice’s Dingle Senior Football Team will now play in Round 3 of the Garvey’s SuperValu Kerry Senior Football County Championship which is scheduled for the weekend of July 10th. The Draw for Round 3 is yet to be made but we think Francie Dorgan’s West Kerry Senior Football Team may be playing either St. Kieran's, Legion, Dingle or the losers of the South Kerry and Austin Stacks replay. Paul Fitzmaurice’s Dingle Senior Football Team may be playing either West Kerry, Kerins O'Rahillys or Milltown/ Castlemaine in Round 3. Whatever happens in the Round 3 Draw both West Kerry and Dingle will have learned an awful lot about themselves in the previous two Rounds and both Francie Dorgan and Paul Fitzmaurice will continuing to keep their Championship

Paul Fitzmaurice’s Dingle Senior Football Team travelled to J P O Sullivan Park in Killorglin, last Sunday where they met the might of the Mid Kerry Senior Football Team. In what was another great advert for the Garvey’s SuperValu Kerry Senior Football County Championship it was Mid Kerry that emerged victorious after extra time in a wonderful game of free flowing football. Dingle started the better and with goals from Mikey Geaney and Conor Geaney led at half time, Mid Kerry 0-3 to Dingle 2-6. In fact with 15 minutes gone of the second half the game looked over and as supporters from all sides left the J P O Sullivan Park in Killorglin, Mid Kerry made an astonishing comeback to push the game into extra time, full time score Mid Kerry 3-10 to Dingle 2-13. With two periods of ten minutes of extra time to be played it was Mid Kerry that finished the stronger

dreams alive in the belief that they can secure a Quarter-Final berth in the Championship. The West Kerry Board would like to wish the West Kerry Senior Football Team and the Dingle Senior Football Team the very best in the Garvey’s SuperValu Kerry Senior Football County Championship, and remember there’s an awful lot of football to be played yet. Beir bua agus beannacht. Kerry GAA Night of Champions 2016 Don’t forget that the Kerry GAA Night of Champions 2016 takes place this Friday 27th May 2016 in the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium, Tralee. Why Asparagus is so Hot Right Now! Irene Ní Fhlannúra Asparagus has enjoyed an almost lofty reputation since it was first depicted in Egyptian wall art around 3,000 BC. A revered plant among the Roman upper classes, Greek botanists and early medicine practitioners, asparagus continues to hold its head up high today and is widely available to all people, no matter their standing in the community! Perhaps its spear-like shape gives it an air of superiority or maybe it’s the culinary profession who have made it “all fancy” – whatever the reason, there is a lot to be celebrated once those shoots emerge from the ground and the short-lived asparagus season begins! In Ireland and the UK, home-grown asparagus is at its best from the last week of April to the first week of June - roughly 40 days and nights of pure asparagus joy! After this time, the spears begin to open and the stems tend to get woody and tough. Like any vegetable, true to its season – asparagus’ timely appearance prepares the body for the bounty of heart-friendly Summer foods that will shortly be in great supply. Rich in rutin, a bioflavonoid, this nutrient strengthens our capillaries and has been used to help lower blood pressure, treat haemorrhoids and varicose veins as well as prevent and treat venous leg ulcers. Another nutrient, folate, much discussed in the media recently, is also in rich supply - a 100g serving of asparagus provides a whopping 67% of our daily requirement. Folate is required to complete red cell formation, reduce levels of homocysteine in the blood and supports the entire nervous system. For women of child-bearing age, folate is well-known for its role in preventing neural tube defects in newborns. Other nutrients of significance include vitamins A, C, E and K, dietary fibre and some minerals. Asparagus is quite the hero in the gut too providing a special type of fibre, called Inulin, in great quantity! Inulin fibre, also known as a prebiotic, does not get broken down in the first segments of the intestinal tract, but makes it way undigested to the large intestine. Once there, it becomes an ideal food source for beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria. A healthy colony of such bacteria is associated with better nutrient absorption, lower risk of allergy and lower risk of colon cancer. Most of the vitamin K provided by asparagus as with other greens is actually created by friendly bacteria in the large intestine – we provide for them and they provide for us, perfect synergy! Vitamin K, most noted for its role in the clotting mechanism is also vital for bone and cardiovascular health. With the asparagus season comes the age-old debate as to whether or not asparagus produces a funny smell in urine. There is some evidence that sulphur containing compounds may be attributed to the odour, but it is far from conclusive and should not deter from enjoying it while it is in season. Furthermore, who knows, perhaps asparagus just gives us a greater sense of smell, either way, why is anyone smelling 40 West Kerry Live

their pee? Another notable claim to fame is its aphrodisiac power, again, no real evidence and hopefully it has nothing to do with the pee smell. Saying that, Marcel Proust, a famed French novelist in the 19th century claimed that asparagus “had the effect of transforming his humble chamber pot into a bowl of aromatic perfume” – not sure if the ladies would agree! The aphrodisiac effect of asparagus is more likely due to its suggestive shape rather than a special trait although any food that nourishes the blood vessels and circulation will also be beneficial to sexual health, particularly for men. Young seasonal asparagus requires very little preparation or cooking. The thinner the stems the quicker it cooks. It is best steamed for a few minutes in a little water standing upright with the thicker ends in the water. This way the tender spear heads are just lightly steamed and impart loads of flavour. The spear heads can also be snapped off and eaten raw in salads. Asparagus is also delicious sautéed in a little butter and fresh herbs. When you buy asparagus, just

break off about an inch or two from the end, rinse and wrap the stems in kitchen paper and store in the fridge. Asparagus will keep in the fridge for days and even longer if you place the stems upright in jar leaving the ends in a little water to prevent them drying out. Enjoy! Making Time To Listen To Your Child

Cattún: Domhnall Ó Bric

Anne Healy We all feel a lot better when somebody really listens to us. Think about it. When you feel heard and seen by somebody else you feel validated and understood. Contrast this to when you are in the middle of telling your partner, or friend something that is really important to you and they take a call on their mobile, perhaps interrupt you by telling you a story about themselves, or when somebody keeps glancing at their watch. When we have these experiences it makes us feel as if what we have to say is not important. We are not seen, we are not respected. When we do not consciously make time to listen to children they too feel they are not important, that what they have to say is of no consequence. I understand that listening can be hard work especially if your child seems to be taking a long time to get to the point of their story, or perhaps your child is challenging you or indeed they may be telling you their painful stories. You may even feel expatriated when your attempts at communicating with your child are met with responses such as ‘I don’t know how I feel’, or for younger children when asked what they did in school often respond by saying ‘I did nothing in school to-day’! Or you may just want to get on with cooking dinner when your child comes to you with something they need to say to you. M. Scott Peck wisely said "You cannot truly listen to anyone and do anything else at the same time." In this article I am going to offer you a few suggestions that may help improve how you communicate with your child. Firstly let’s look at the importance of talking and listening to children and what it offers. Listening to your child improves your bond with them, and encourages them to listen to you. It helps them to form relationships and to build self-esteem. It helps them feel understood and therefore less alone. Children depending on their age will have different skills at listening and communicating to you. As a parent you too will have your own skills at listening to your child. At times you may be truly present and available to your child while perhaps at other times you are preoccupied by the many demands you may have. At times you may talk at your children as opposed to talking to them. But you know how satisfying it is when you spend more time talking to your children, when you can hear their opinions and ideas, talk about fears and hopes. This leads to setting seeds for open and supportive communication between you and your child. With this in mind I am offering you a few tips on how to help you communicate in a meaningful and heart felt way with your child.

something like ‘seems it is not so easy to tell me this, but take your time it is important what you have to say’. Or if on the other hand your child has a negative response to what you have to say to them you could say ‘I know that you disagree with what I am saying to you and you have your opinion. But it is important that I say this to you’. It is helpful to repeat back what your child has said to you as this tells them you are truly listening. . Let them know that you are interested in what they are saying by saying things like ‘can you tell me a little bit more so that I really understand you, or ‘I am wondering how you feel’ or ‘ have thought about what to do’ (obviously this response is more suited for older children. Try not to start to criticise a choice that they made that was not in their best interest. Instead try to explore how they can make a better choice next time. In conclusion when we feel listened to and understood it triggers soothing biochemical that strengthens neural pathways that help us soothe and calm ourselves throughout our lives. CS Lewis said ‘We read to know we are not alone’. Let’s make it so that your child can say ‘When my parent listens to me I know I am not alone’. Tips For Communicating With Your Child Make time to be emotionally available to your child. Of course you are available to your child twenty four hours a day and you have many more demands on you. What I mean by being available is to stop what you are doing and give your child your full attention. When talking to your child, try to remember how it was when you were a child and how you felt when your parents, granny, neighbour or teacher really listened to you. It is easy to forget that children do not think as we do. There is so much they do not have the language or maturity to understand. They may not have the words to explain their feelings. But they truly ‘get’ the feeling of being listened to, understood by you the parent. Try not to interrupt your child as he or she speaks. Even if your child seems to be unreasonable let them finish talking. In other words respond rather than react to them. Become mindful of your child’s facial expression and body language. Sometimes you will see a change in your child’s face or perhaps their body tenses up when you say something. You could gently reflect

Breandán Mac Gearailt Poilitíocht. Tá cheithre aire Sóisireach ag stracadh as chúrsaí sláinte an babhta seo agus ní fiú trácht ortha siúd nách bhfuil aireacht do shaghas éigin acu. Dé Sathairn seo caite fuair Mícheál Mac Gearailt ó Leataoiibh Mór, bás in aois ochtó seacht bliain. Feirmeóir agus fear a chaith seal i Sasana mar a raibh tarrac ar scéalta seoigh agus cleas aige. Bhí saol cruaidh aige ag obair do Mhurphy nó ag cur síos pollaí iarainn do ‘British Rail’. Ní raibh aon fhearaistí acu seachas an píce, sluasad, ramhan agus órd. Níorbh aon nath aige an obair. Ard oibrí bea é ach a dtáinigh sé abhaile agus luigh leis an bhfeirmeoireacht. Bhí sé cruaidh láidir gur bhuail an ailse san inchinn é, slán mar n-ínstear é. Caithfead a rá cé ná raibh aon ghaol agam leis ach bhí lena bhean Eibhlín a fuair bás aon mhí déag ó shoin, ach ba dhuine dos na cáirde ba mhó a bhí riamh agam é. Bhí an- chur amach aige ar ghaolta agus ba údar ar bha, beithigh agus caoire é. Ní raibh cnámh leisciúil ina chorp. Bhí an shuim aige i gcaid agus i ndornálaíocht. Ba chuma cad as nó cén t-am a bheadh na babhtaí dornálaíochta ar siúl, bheadh a chluas leis an raidió aige. Is beag suim a bhí aige san ól ach bhreá leis a an chleachta. Bhí sé an- mhór le ‘Foxy John,’ go raibh an- mholadh aige air.

Question - I intend to buy a drone. Are there any rules I should be aware of?

· If it will be a hazard to another aircraft in flight

Answer - Drones and model aircraft are both considered small unmanned aircraft and the same rules apply to their operation. The rules are set out in the Small Unmanned Aircraft (Drones) and Rockets Order 2015 (SI 563/2015). Under the rules, all drones weighing 1kg or more must be registered with the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA). This includes the weight of the battery and all attached equipment, including cargo, at the start of its flight. You must be over 16 years of age to register a drone, otherwise it must be registered by a parent or legal guardian. You register your drone online at iaa.ie/drones. You must never operate a drone in a negligent or reckless manner so as to endanger the life or property of others and you must have permission from the landowner for take-off and landing. You must never operate it:

· In civil or military controlled airspace or in restricted areas such as prisons If you want to operate your drone outside these limits, you must apply to the IAA for a

specific operating permission and complete a drone safety training course. If your drone weighs 4kg or more, you must complete a drone safety training course before operating it. You should be aware that there may be privacy or trespass issues if you operate a drone over private property. While you do not need insurance to operate a drone it is recommended that you are insured and that you complete a drone safety training course.
