RETIREMENT. The Business Chamber wish Jim McCarthy a long and happy retirement following 46 years of loyal service with Fitzgerald's Hardware in Dingle. Thousands of customers have benefited greatly from Jim's sound advice when about to invest in goods for all types of building materials or household basics no matter how big or little the final purchase.

BEANNÚ NA mBÁD. The Annual Blessing of the Boats at Dingle Pier is scheduled for this Sunday September 15th commencing at 12.30p.m. This celebration proved a very popular event for many years but insurance issues and Covid restrictions put a halt to a great community day out for locals and visitors alike. Depending on the weather conditions most of the celebrations will be on land with a number of guest speakers invited to give a brief history of the harbour activities and interesting stories from bygone days as well.

OIFIG AN PHOIST. Dingle Post Office has reopened under new management as Eileen Fitzgerald takes over the Postmistress position from Eileen Geaney. We wish both Eileens well as they follow their respective business interests in Main Street. The Post Office is one of the oldest surviving public institutions in our town and provides a necessary service as well as a social connection for many people which unfortunately no longer exists in many areas around the country.

ARTS APPOINTMENT. Ealaín na Gaeltachta have appointed Marina Ní Dhubháin of Baile Iochtarach as Arts Facilitator for the Munster Region in place of Rachel Holsted who is now CEO of the same organisation. Go neirí go geal libh beirt ins an obair tábhachtach atá faoí lamh agaibh leis na healaíona.

DINGLE MARATHON . A record crowd of over 3,500 athletes lined up last Saturday morning to take part in the Full and Half Marathon here in Dingle. The half competitors completed their 13 mile event in Dunquin and the full competitors continued through Ballyferriter and Gallarus to finish their 26 mile challenge back at the starting point in the Marina Car Park.

The Marathon Organisers wish to thank all who helped directly or indirectly in the successful completion of this major event which is of huge financial and publicity benefit to the entire peninsula. They particularly wish to thank motorists and residents who were inconvenienced by a number of road closures and traffic delays along the route for periods on Saturday.

Ceann Sibéal Golf Club has held a Charity Golf Event for the Cork/Kerry Health Link Bus for the past 10 years or so.

D’éirigh thar barr leis an ócáid seo i mbliana a bhí eagraithe ag baill Shinsearacha an Chlub. Bhí an aimsir go hálainn agus ghlac 33 fhoireann páirt sa chomórtas. Bailíodh €5,000 anuraidh don gcúis seo atá thar a bheith fiúntach ach is dea-scéal ceart iomlán na bliana seo mar tá €8,100 faighte againn le bronnadh uirthi.

A superb event this year, organised by the Club Seniors, on a beautiful day with 33 teams participating and, most importantly, raising €8,100 (€5,000 last year) for this very worthy cause.

How Do You Like Them Apples?

Ireland is currently at the height of its apple season, yet of the €100 million Irish people spend buying apples every year, only 5% are Irishgrown. In the block-buster book The Heritage of Apples in Ireland (2014), Dr. Michael Hennerty identifies sixty-eight varieties of apples native to Ireland. Apparently, over fifty more varieties were documented in the past but are no longer grown – that’s a lot of apples! According to Hennerty, we could be enjoying Irish apples all year round, except for a gap from July to mid-August. By then, we’d likely be sick of eating apples and dive into strawberries instead.

Apples have been with us for a long time, growing wild in Central Asia and China ten to twenty million years ago. Through the migration of animals and people, they travelled west, reaching Europe around 5000 BC. Adam and Eve almost got them banned after their antics in the Garden of Eden, but luckily for us, apples have happily thrived here since about 2000 BC. St. Patrick is even said to have planted a few apple trees in Armagh, the Orchard County, starting a tradition that monks continued up until quite recently.

Apples in Irish History: Brehon Law and St. Patrick’s Legacy

In ancient Ireland, apple trees were classed as noble trees, protected by Brehon Law (7th Century). Damaging an apple tree could land you a fine of five milking cows—no small sum back then! With apples such a valued part of our culture, it’s no surprise that the apple tree holds a special place in Irish history.

The Modern Revival of Irish Apples

With a growing interest in sustainable agriculture, we’re seeing a small increase in land used for apple trees, both commercially and for smallscale projects. Most of the national crop ends up as cider or apple juice, making it tough to find locally grown apples to eat throughout the year. While they might not be as exotic as tropical fruits, you can’t beat a locally grown apple, picked nearby without chemicals or sprays.

An Apple a Day: Health Benefits from the Orchard

“Eat an apple before bed and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread.” This saying was first documented in Wales in 1866 and later revised to the more familiar version, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” As it turns out, there’s some truth in it. Apples can help with weight loss by curbing the appetite. Eating one before a meal can reduce calorie intake, and even the smell of an apple might trick the brain into thinking you’ve eaten one. Sniffing an apple 20 minutes before meals may help you cut back on calories.

What’s Inside an Apple?

Just beneath the skin, apples are packed with vitamin C, which boosts your immune system and keeps colds at bay. It also helps create collagen, the glue that holds us together both physically and mentally. Apples also contain quercetin, a powerful antioxidant that fights inflammation, asthma, and allergies. Another beneficial compound in apples is cat-

echin, known to improve brain and muscle function. If you stew apples with chamomile, they can even help shorten the duration of diarrhea in children and the elderly—useful information for this time of year!

for Gut Health: Why Fibre Matters

Where apples really shine is in their fibre, pectin, and polyphenols. These non-digestible parts of the fruit feed the friendly bacteria in your gut, particularly in the large intestine. This reduces inflammation and lowers the risk of diverticular disease and colon cancer. An imbalanced gut is also linked to metabolic disorders like diabetes and obesity—another good reason to have an apple a day!

Pectin, which we know for setting jams and jellies, played a crucial role in treating radiation exposure. Dr. Vassili Nesterenko from Belarus pioneered the use of apple pectin to reduce Cesium 137 levels in children exposed to radiation after the Chernobyl disaster. A post-Chernobyl program (1996–2007) treated 160,000 children, and their Cs137 levels dropped by 30-40% after just one course of pectin. Apple pectin can also block the absorption of Plutonium-239, one of the deadliest radioisotopes. With all this backing, it certainly wouldn’t hurt to eat an apple or two a day, especially if you live or work in polluted environments.

How to Store and Enjoy Your Apples Year-Round

Apples are one of the easiest foods to enjoy—just wash and eat. If you’re lucky enough to have a good haul, you can make jams, jellies, or cider vinegar to preserve them. You can also freeze apple tarts or sauces for later use. Early-harvested apples don’t store as well as later varieties, and all apples continue to respire until eaten or cooked. When storing, choose apples free from blemishes or bruises, as these will rot quickly. Wrap each apple in waxed paper and store them in a cool place, ideally between 0 to 4 degrees Celsius. Keep them in single layers to avoid bruising and rot. With warmer winters, your garage or the boot of an old car might not be the best storage option anymore!

Raiding Apple Trees

Raiding apple trees was one of our favorite end-of-summer activities growing up in town (I won’t say where!). The trees are long gone, and the gang has disbanded, but I can finally justify our actions! I’ll happily pass on the blueprint for a good apple raid to my children, and I hope they’ll be as fruitful in their quests for local apples. After all, them apples don’t fall far from the tree!

Groom Goes Crazy After Wedding

-Kerry News, 02 March, 1903

A man from near Aunascaul, who was married on Shrove Tuesday, suddenly became mentally ill on the evening after the wedding. He locked his wife, his mother-in-law, his sister and himself into his house and threatened to stab anyone, who attempted to enter the dwelling, with a four-pronged fork.

The police were informed and Sergeant Grogan and Constable Hogan went to the house, kicked in the door and disarmed the unfortunate man. The three women had a terrible time with him and were frightened out of their wits. Foley was committed to Killarney Lunatic Asylum.

Austin Stack in an English Jail

A friend who was in Manchester last week informs us that he visited Austin Stack in prison there. He said the member for West Kerry looked anything but well.

Not that Stack had any complaints to make about his treatment in an English prison which was far better than what he had to endure in Mountjoy jail in Dublin. However, it is now that the rigours of his time and treatment in Mountjoy are beginning to take effect.

(Austin Stack escaped from Strangeways prison in October 1919 and became Minister for Home Affairs in the 1st Dáil in late November 1919.)

(In a recent issue we had comment on the Irish language in West Kerry from a visitor with the initials C. J. H. Now from the same visitor we have impressions of shops and goods available in Dingle in 1874.)

In one of these windows the following articles were exposed for sale: - A scythe, a large dish, some bowls, a loaf of bread, a set of tongs, a kettle, some bottles of castor oil, a glass of “bulls eyes” and some “illigant tay from Cork”.

Sugar sticks are much in demand and are of genuine home manufacture. However, literature is at a very low ebb; even penny songbooks are at a discount and no other books can be bought. A large number of stone bottles, apparently ink jars, would seem to indicate that if the people do not read they must write. But on inspection these jars are found to contain ‘Annalto’ – a mixture for colouring butter, much in demand.

Stabbed Seven Times In Jealous Rage

-Cork Constitution, 04 March, 1895

The magistrates sitting at Killorglin Petty Sessions yesterday had before them an interesting case of love and jealousy. A respectable young man named Kelleher, a farmer’s son, was charged with assaulting another young man, also a farmer’s son, named Cornelius McCarthy, at Killorglin on February 21st.

On the day in question the parties concerned, with their parents, were matchmaking in Killorglin. Both young men had their eye on the same young woman. After lengthy bargaining McCarthy was successful and in the evening he started to take his intended to her father’s house. They had not gone far when they were overtaken by Kelleher who began to abuse McCarthy. Words turned to blows and during a fierce fight on the road McCarthy was stabbed seven times – three times in a shoulder, three times in his side and once in his neck.

He bled profusely and was in a very weak condition when attended by a doctor in Killorglin. After hearing all the evidence the magistrates adjourned the case.

Comhaontas Turasóireachta Chorca Dhuibhne / Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance

Comhaontas Turasóireachta Chorca Dhuibhne / Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance was originally an informal grouping of all the tourism related committees throughout the peninsula called Dingle Peninsula Tourism. Each committee was interacting with the main stake holders such as Údarás na Gaeltachta, Kerry County Council, North East West Kerry Development (NEWKD) & Fáilte Ireland individually and trying to improve business in their own part of the Peninsula. At that time, they set up a website, on which every business in the area was given a page of their own. However, as enquires came in through the site it became clear that as a group, if they formed one company and united to promote the Peninsula as a whole, they would be more effective. This led to the formation of the company Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance (DPTA) with the aim of becoming the conduit through which the Dingle Peninsula as a whole could be marketed to the world.

Since then, Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance has become a much more professional body with its own internationally recognized brand. Through constant lobbying at the highest level, we now have strong bonds with the network of Government Bodies as well as working closely with local groups. We attend Trade Shows both at home and abroad, we produce promotional materials and guides of the area for our members to share with visitors.

With the challenges of business & tourism on the Peninsula, we are looking to hear from owners what they and their businesses need in this current climate and how best can we as an organization help. This survey, independently facilitated by Repucon Consulting with the support of Fáilte Ireland, will help us to do that.

We will also be joined by representatives from Kerry County Council, Údarás na Gaeltachta, Tourism Ireland & The Blasket Centre.

Upcoming Events on the Peninsula

Camp Sheep Fair This year’s fair will be held on the 18th September 2024 it dates back centuries to the time of Lord Ventry when a ram auction was held in the village. Lord Ventry brought the first black faced scotch breed of sheep to West Kerry. He carried 1,000 ewes on his lands in Beheenagh, Camp at this time. The fair has survived down through the years and is as always, a great social occasion too for the local sheep farmers and the families of Camp with plenty of local music as well . In recent years the fair has developed and now they have horses and donkeys, fowl and other animals along with the sheep for sale at the fair.

Memories of Colaíste IosagáinBook Launch

This is a book of memories, in both Irish and English of Colaíste Iosagáin as told by those who were there, with each person deciding what to say and how to say it, some in one language, some in both.

Colaíste Iosagáin, Ballyvourney began life as a selective intake, all male preparatory school and ended as a mixed ability, co-educational secondary school.

Front of stage are the teaching staff and students who share their story with us.

As we remember Thomas on his first anniversary, we, his loving family, would like to express our sincere gratitude to all who sympathised with us and supported us at such a difficult time.

We are very grateful to all of you who called to our home, sent mass cards, wrote messages of sympathy, who travelled long distances, who attended the wake, removal and requiem mass to remember Thomas and to be with us. We also wish to thank all our friends and neighbours who showered us with food, refreshments and were a source of constant comfort and support to us.

We are deeply indebted to the many healthcare professionals who cared for Thomas during his illness, his GP Conor Brosnan and the staff of Dingle Medical Centre, the public health nurses, our local nurses Deirdre Dorgan and Teresa Queally-O’Connor who went above and beyond in their support and care for Thomas, the staff of Walsh’s Pharmacy, Breda Dyland who organised the Kerry Cork Health Link Bus, the Home Care Assistants who called to our home and attended to Thomas every morning, the Community Home Care team, Day Care unit and the Inpatient unit of Kerry Specialist Palliative Care Services who were so kind to us during Thomas’s final days. We would like to acknowledge Fr. Michael, Fr. Jim, Fr. Séamus and Fr Tom who concelebrated the funeral mass. Also, thanks to Dónal O’Connor, Cathy, Malcolm and Gerard for their kindness, compassion and professionalism in arranging all aspects of Thomas’ funeral. We are grateful to the committee of Féile Lios Póil who provided a guard of honour for Thomas. Manx Shearwater Alert!

The BirdWatchIreland West Kerry Branch is appealing to everyone on the Dingle Peninsula these next few weeks to be on the lookout for stranded Manx Shearwater fledglings.

What are they?

They are pigeon-sized, web-footed black and white seabirds that breed on the Blasket Islands. During the next few weeks this year’s fledglings are making their first big migration to the waters off Brazil and Uruguay where they will spend the winter months.

Why are they stranding in our towns and villages?

They are attracted and disoriented by the strong electric lights with which we surround ourselves. Once they crash land on roads and in gardens they are rendered helpless as they cannot take off from flat surfaces (they either need steep slopes or be on the water) and are vulnerable to predation by cats and dogs.

What can you do if you find one?

Please pick it up carefully and place it securely in a cardboard box. Do not give it any food or water and ring one of the volunteers listed below who will collect it and release it safely back to the wild.

Four good reasons to get involved

1. Manx Shearwaters are long lived birds. The oldest ringed and recovered bird was 52 years old. By picking up and helping one bird you might help dozens of generations of shearwaters yet to come!

2. The shearwaters’ parents have travelled all the way from South America to the safe breeding colony on the Blasket Islands in order to lay one single egg which they incubate for up to 55 days after which they feed the fledgling for a further 60-70 days. That’s a big effort for this protected, amber-listed little bird. It seems a small effort on our part to pick it up and release it again safely to give it one more go at finding its way south.

3. Usually they are entirely uninjured and just need a little help to get airborne again.

4. We have very few opportunities to get up close and personal with some of our more elusive wildlife. Shearwater can generally only be observed high out to sea from a boat as they breed underground on our remoter islands and only come back to their breeding burrows at night. This is a great chance for everyone to find out a little bit more about the great biodiversity here on the Dingle peninsula and to help in a small but very effective way to protect it.

Last but not least let’s consider switching off some unnecessary outside lights to prevent these birds from crash landing in the first place!

Last year we collected and released more than 60 birds around the peninsula – thanks to all the people around the peninsula who picked them up and gave us a call. Some people even carried an empty cardboard box in their cars just in case they came across one of them. Thank you!

Inch Notes

A big thanks to everyone who came out on our Otter Walk on Saturday. It was quite a magical morning exploring the wonders of the natural world on our doorstep. We found otter and mink paw prints, some leftover crab shells from the otter’s dinner, a natural bee hotel, Sea Arrowgrass and some very interesting caddisfly larvae - more details on these below and some photos from the day.

Many thanks to the local landowner who very kindly accommodated us and to Cathy Eastman, our ecologist, for a wonderful morning.

Clean Coast Clean-up will take place on the following Saturday the 21stfrom 10am to 12pm. Bags, pickers, and high-vis vests will be provided but please bring your own if you have them. Clean-ups are weather dependent. Please check the Inch Community Facebook page for last-minute changes.

Senior citizen community lunches start back again at Inch Community Centre V92HK31 in Tuesday the 24th September at 1pm and every second Tuesday after that. All are welcome.

It was great fun to do a bit of cycling to promote the much-anticipated L'Étape Ireland before it made its grand debut in Kerry last Saturday September 7th with Oliver Kirwan from L’Etape Ireland and Sarah Ann Egan from Roadman Podcast. The Kerry Homecoming Festival at Halloween takes place from 18th October to 1st November 2024 as part of the Global Irish Festival Series. The Festival is a truly unique opportunity for the thousands of Kerry people around the world to make the trip home and celebrate the culture of their home county, uncover shared histories and forge new, lasting connections.

Halloween comes from an ancient Celtic festival called Samhain, the festival of Samhain celebrates the end of the annual harvest season and the coming of winter. The Kerry Homecoming festival programme will feature Samhain / Halloween spectacle events in towns and villages and will include a range of sporting, heritage, cultural, food, community festivals and business events.

CAMP VINTAGE DAY 2024

Camp Vintage will be held next Sunday, September 15th at The Junction Bar, Camp. Gates open at 1.00 p.m. The day will begin with a Car, Tractor and Honda 50 run around the peninsula, returning to Camp Junction Bar, where vintage cars and agricultural machinery will be on show for the afternoon. Always a wonderful display. There will be Ploughing and Threshing demonstrations and much more on the day. Kiddies funday too, a great day out for all the family, not to be missed. Proceeds to Cystic Fibrosis Ireland and Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.

CAMP FAIR

Camp Sheep Fair is on Wednesday, September

18th. Camp Fair is among the oldest surviving traditional fair in the country. It is always a great social occasion too, for young and old. There will be prizes for penned quality sheep, for sale, chosen on the day. Winners of last year's perpetual cups are asked to please return them.

There are prizes for the best pens of sheep owned by boys and girls U/18 years, sponsored by Jimmy O Dwyer.

An Auction of Sheep and other Items in the afternoon.

Camp Childcare are organising all day fun activities for the children followed by a raffle for great prizes on the day.

All funds raised will go to Camp Childcare and Ailises Quest for a World Championship award. Ailise Deane has qualified for the World Adventure Racing Championship in Ecuador (700km) which is a phenomenal achievement. She has done this without any funding support, so it's time for all of us to get behind her “Go n-éirí an bóthar leat.” Ailise!

The Pet Show will be held in O'Dwyers forecourt at 3.30 p.m. There are 3 categories as follows, 1. Regular Pet Show, 2. Pet in fancy Dress. 3. Pet doing a trick. You can only enter one of the categories. Jacinta welcomes all pets, great and small, sponsored by Brigid O C.

Our local musician/singer Gerard Mulligan will entertain us all day outside O’Dwyers and after the fair at Ashes Bar.

Camp Fair cuisine, the mutton pie and traditional dishes served in local Bars, Anne’s Coffee Bar, Ashes Bar and in O'Dwyers Supermarket, meals are served all day from early til late. And Camp Fair would not be the same without Mary's mutton pies at The Junction Bar.. At The Ranch in Sandy Feet you can try out Chef Antonio’s Italian cuisine, if that's your fancy.

Camp Fair Day is always one of the highlights of the year in Camp. So please come out and

Sheila and Valerie and their amazing team provides a wonderful service to our community. HARVEST THANKSGIVING

Ecumenical Harvest Thanksgiving which will include thanksgiving for 200 years of Kilgobbin Church will be held in Kilgobbin Church on the 29th September at 3pm followed by tea in the Old School House in Camp.

The Village Voices choir from Castlegregory and the Camp Choir will take part in the service, The Collection will be for the Church Missionary Society CMS which has supported the building of water storage tanks in Kenya.

The Dingle Way is a beautifully scenic long distance walking trail on the world famous Dingle Peninsula. At approximately 176 km (109 miles) long, the hiking route officially begins and ends in Tralee, the county capital, and takes in some of the world’s most breath taking scenery. You can join the trail at any number of points along its length as it hugs the coast along the Wild Atlantic Way. There are also many short loop walks and many mountain hikes and trails off the main Dingle Way offering excellent walking alternatives to cater for all interests.

Brandon (Cnoc Bhréanainn) , the Three Sisters (n a Triúr Deirféar ), Smerick Harb our (Cuan Ard na Caithne) and Sybil Point (Ceann Sibéal ). The route then descends and joins back up with the main road passing Louis Mulcahy’s famous pottery After passing the small picturesque Clochar Beach, the Dingle Way retu rns to the main road (R559) for a short period It takes a minor road to the left and proceeds in a northeasterl y direction to the east side of Ceann Sibéal golf course. P roceeding through Na Gorta Dubha and onto Béal Bán Strand and Smerwick Harbour, a word which is believed to be of Norse origin To your left at the northern side of the strand is Dún an Óir , originally the site of a promontory fort, where 600 Italian, Spanish and Irish men were massacred by Elizabethan Crown Forces during the Desmond Rebellion of 1580.

Aois an Chré-Umha/ The Bronze Age

The Bronze Age is the period immediately following on from the Neolithic, when people are beginning to learn how to mine copper (with the oldest copper mine in north-western Europe being on Ross Island, near Killarney), and, in time, learn to combine it with tin to make bronze, which is harder and more useful for making tools and weapons. This begins in Ireland from about 2300 BC, and it is a period which lasts until around 500 BC, with many developments, particularly in tools and weaponry along the way. Gold is now also used for ceremonial objects and jewellery.

Many monuments are associated with the Bronze Age, although it is pos sible that some of them have their origins in the Neolithic. Here on the Dingle Peninsula there are almost 100 examples of single standing stones (galláin), and also some stone alignments or rows, made up of between 2 and 6 stones. Many of these monuments are orientated on major events in the solar and lunar cycles, and they may have also had other ritual significance for the communities which erected them, as well as being associated with burial, maybe of a token nature, and the areas around them might also have been used as places of assembly.

Sometimes associated with these monuments, but mainly found on boulders or outcrops, is a particular style of carving known as Rock Art. On the Dingle Peninsula there are over 40 known stones decorated in this manner, where the motifs generally consist of cup-marks, often enclosed by one or more concentric circles. Radial lines are sometimes also found, as are other motifs. A stone, recovered from a field in An Luachair where it was exposed during land reclamation several years ago, is on display in Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne.

Wedge tombs continue in use into the earlier Bronze Age, but for much of the period cist graves become a preferred form of burial. These are stonelined and roofed graves, where the deceased was often interred with a pottery vessel, containing food for the next journey, indicating a belief in the afterlife. Both cremation and inhumation were practised.

There are at least half a dozen Ring-barrows on the peninsula, which contain a low, usually circular mound or level space enclosed by a fosse (ditch) and external bank. An example is to be seen just on the Ventry side of the Clasach, on the right hand side of the road as you go downhill. Some of these monuments may date from the Bronze Age, but without excavation one cannot be sure. Excavated examples have sometimes contained burial deposits, often cremations. It is also possible that some of the cairns and mounds on the peninsula, found on hilltops, may also be of Bronze Age date.

Although not very numerous on the Dingle Peninsula, there are several examples of Fulachta Fiadh or burnt mounds. These have been interpreted as cooking places, and are the most numerous monument type of the Bronze Age. It is also possible that some of the promontory forts, and hillforts (e.g. Cathair Chonraoi) may have had their origins in this period.

Tadhg Evans, winner of the Paddy O'Connor Memorial Pool Tournament, presented a cheque for €2,430 to Kerry Mental Health Association (Corca Dhuibhne Branch) last week. The tournament, which was held in O'Sullivan's of Garynadur, had 37 entrants with Tadhg coming out on top in the final with a narrow 6-5 victory over Cormac O'Sullivan.

Neart Na Machairí was delighted to partner with Castlegregory Community Council, Irish Whales & Dolphine Group; Irish Elasmobranch Group and Waterworld Dive Centre for an event entitled Resilient Seas, Resilient Communities. This event began with talks from a variety of perspectives on the importance of Brandon and Tralee for marine biodiversity before opening into roundtable discussions of what the local vision and priorities are to support healthy seas and those who rely upon them.

Fish Soup with Potatoes & Haddock

Normally when we think of a fish soup we usually think of a delicious creamy chowder, but there is something special about a simple fish soup which is light yet full of flavour.

Be in no hurry to cook this dish, it will probably only take around 30 minutes to cook it but when it is slowed down, the flavour from the vegetables cooked in butter and with the herbs will give it such a delicious base. The slow steady simmer when cooking the fish will leave it juicy, soft and tender.

If you have to cook this beforehand to help save time, cook the dish until the potatoes are nearly cooked and then turn it off and then when you are ready to serve it warm it up and let the fish cook before serving.

Ingredients

knob of butter

1 small onion, diced

1 leek, washed and white part cut into small pieces,

1 stick of celery, sliced finely

1 bay leaf

small bunch of thyme leaves

2 carrots, diced

2-3 potatoes, peeled and cut into large dice

1 litre of fish stock

pinch of saffron

500g haddock, skin removed and cut into chunks

200g mussels, cleaned parsley, chopped salt and pepper

Method

Put a pot on over low to medium heat. Add the butter and the onions, leeks, bay leaf, thyme and a pinch of salt. Cook this slowly for at least 10 minutes. Allow everything to soften and the flavour of the herbs to develop.

Add the carrots and cook for another few minutes.

Add the potatoes then add the stock and saffron. Turn up the heat to bring it to a steady simmer. Cook this for about 10 minutes and check the potatoes, at this stage they should be almost cooked. Add the fish and mussels. Put a lid over the pot and heat the heat low. A slow steady simmer will give the best result to poach the fish and cook the mussels. Check after 5 minutes, and cook for another 2-3 minutes if needed. All the mussels should be open and the fish should be cooked but not falling apart (use a small knife to check one of the pieces of fish).

Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed. Remove the bay leaf. Add the chopped parsley and serve immediately.

The Blue Zone in Dingle’s Green Street has long been a byword for some of the best pizzas in Ireland, with a huge and loyal following for gourmet sit-ins and takeaway pizza, great wines and delicious salads. The proprietor, Frenchman Patric Juillet has lived in Dingle for most of the past 30 years, is famous for his take on the Pizza and fine wines. He had stints with his acclaimed River God Café in Dingle and Galway . He is a genial host with what some would say is a zany sense of humour and a keen observer of human life.

In spite of being a well known fixture on the Dingle scene, Juillet is a very private character. It will come as a huge surprise to people who think they know him well that his career has included stints as an acclaimed ‘high-end’ restauranteur at the cutting edge of the Sydney fine dining scene, and a career as a Movie Producer in Australia and Hollywood. His introduction to Ireland was in 1991 with a project to make a film of the Blasket classic "Twenty Years Agrowing" by Muiris Ó Súilleabháin based on a script by poet Dylan Thomas.

On 21 and 22 September, the Blasket Centre in Dunquin hosts “A Pizzaman's Pictures” - a retrospective showing of four feature films which Juillet produced, as well as an hour-long conversation with the man himself. Juillet will share his life in films, the intriguing story of how he first came to Ireland in 1991 to make a movie, his association with Wendy Hughes, one of Australia’s finest actors with whom he shared two children, and how the arc of his varied life so far took him from his native Provence to a life on the Dingle Peninsula, and rubbing shoulders with Hollywood giants. Four feature films Juillet produced in the 1980s in Australia will be shown: Unfinished Business (Sat 21 Sep, 3pm) €5

Geoff, a journalist in his mid 40s, returns to Australia from 15 years abroad, leaving behind him in the US a failed marriage and three children. He meets Maureen, the girl he was in love with when he left Australia. She is married to an older man, George, who she loves but have no children. Maureen tells Geoff her husband is sterile and asks for him to impregnate her. A year later, Geoff meets Maureen and her baby. (Over 16s only)

A public interview with Patric Juillet (aka Paddy July), the intriguing film producer and proprietor of Dingle’s Blue Zone will be held on Saturday 21st September at 4.30pm.

A Pizzaman’s Pictures, in the intimate theatre of the Blasket Centre, promises a fascinating feast for film-lovers - and the merely curious, as well as adding another unique tale to the long story of Dingle’s characters. Not to be missed.

An Ghaeltacht B. In a very spirted and competitive replay it was Dingle B with a second half goal from Brian O’Connell who emerged victorious in Gallarus. With a point separating them at half time, Dingle B 1-6 to 0-8 An Ghaeltacht B it was all to play for in the second half.

Brian O’Connell scored Dingle’s second goal after 5 minutes of play in the second half. Points from Gavin Ó Cinnéide, Diarmuid Ó Séaghdhá and Dara Ó Beagaoích brought An Ghaeltacht back into the game. Dingle responded with points from James Hoare, Liam Brosnan and Tadhg Browne. Again An Ghaeltacht came back with points from Dara Ó Beagaoích and Conn Ó Riagáin to reduce the deficit, but it was Dingle with points from Brian O’Connell and James Hoare who finished the stronger to hold on to the win. Full time score, Dingle B 2-12 to 0-15 An Ghaeltacht B.

Film Review: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is the long-awaited follow-up to the 1988 classic horror/comedy of the same (half) title. Thankfully, Tim Burton was brought back as the director of the new entry, making this his first film in over five years. This is great news for fans of the original as its winning blend of light-hearted-horror, screwball comedy, and inventive world-building are pure Burton through-and-through. The story follows Lydia Deetz, the young girl from the original film, as she must re-summon the titular sleazebag poltergeist to help rescue her daughter from being trapped in the afterlife. The original Beetlejuice is the kind of horror-tinged family film that could have only been made in the ‘80s. However, anyone who’s seen the original, loves it. It offers an incredibly imaginative depiction of the afterlife and Burton’s mix of gothic and slapstick elements through the visuals are perfect for the story and setting, with Michael Keaton’s immensely entertaining scuzzball of a spirit as the mouldy cherry on top.

Considering the fact that Burton himself has an aversion to making sequels and seems to put originality first, it’s both surprising and disappointing that the new film takes a markedly safe approach, doubling down on what worked before and putting less emphasis on new ideas and characters. Though the aesthetic is still inspired, and the story undoubtedly has its moments, the new script seems to have too much reverence for the original film’s world-building. It gives over far too much of the runtime to repeating jokes and ideas that were more charming the first time around. This probably won’t be a problem for newcomers to the series, but the new film generally gives off the feeling that it’s a slight and unimportant extension of the first film, instead of a worthwhile new entry that will leave a definite mark on the series’ legacy.

With all that said, the film is still a hugely enjoyable time at the cinema. Burton has a fantastic knack for creating family-entertainment that adults can enjoy as much as their kids, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is no different. The practical effects and production design are beautifully detailed and memorable, with the afterlife’s claustrophobic hallways and an office run by shrunken dead-heads being the highlights. The cast across the board deserve credit for making the most of the simplistic script. Catherine O Hara is basically playing her character from Schitt’s Creek, to great comedic effect, and Winona Ryder and Jenna Ortega work hard to imbue the story with some pathos. However, like the first film, Michael Keaton, stepping back into the role of Beetlejuice, is the MVP. There’s huge potential for failure when an actor returns to a popular role years later, but after a few minutes of watching, it becomes very clear that Keaton is still well-able to fully deliver in the role. His disgusting mannerisms, used-car-salesman speech-pattern and fourthwall-breaks are all still immensely fun to watch, and the film benefits hugely from beefing up his screen-time from the original.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice never seems confident enough in its new ideas, putting most of its focus on what we have seen before. However, it has undeniably great elements, namely Burton’s imagination and Keaton’s comedic talents. Combined, they undeniably make it a cut above most family entertainment in cinemas these days.

The Dingle Peninsula Calendar 2025

The Ecumenical Harvest Thanksgiving at Camp will be held in Kilgobbin Church on the 29th September at 3pm, followed by tea in the Old School House in Camp.

The service will include a celebration for 200 years of Kilgobbin Church. The Village Voices Choir from Castlegregory and the Camp Choir will take part in the service. The collection will be for the Church Missionary Society CMS which has supported the building of water storage tanks in Kenya.

Halloween and Christmas markets: Now that both markets are over for the summer months and the nights are starting to draw in our thoughts drift to Halloween and dare I say it Christmas.

The Christmas market is is on November 30th.. and is now fully booked. We hope to see you all there ....

Halloween market is on October 26th ... Both markets will be held in the Clubrooms... times for both markets are 11am to 4pm.

Outdoor Country market Castlegregory: We would like to thank everyone who visited our market over the Summer months. Even though the weather wasn't the best over the 13 weeks we were up and running it was still a good summer. It was lovely to see all of the regulars returning and it is always lovely to see new faces as they discover our market for the first time. Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

Whist: Every Thursday evening in the Clubrooms from 8pm. Newcomers and Learners welcome.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.
