TRAFFIC CALMING. Kerry County Council propose to introduce Traffic Calming Measures on the N86 road at The Tracks in Dingle Town. The alterations include the provision of a Puffin Crossing with Traffic Lights and other road adjustments in the immediate vicinity of the Bus Stop Area . Drawings showing the location and proposed works can be inspected in the County Council Offices in Milltown Dingle or in Room 115 Areas An Chontae , Rathass,Tralee up to March 19th.

Observations or representations may be made in writing to the Roads, Transportation and Marine Dept in Tralee before Friday March 21st next.

TOWN CENTRE SURVEY. A Dingle Town Centre Health Check Survey is being carried out at present by an independent company called Hub Planning and Consultancy Group. Copies of the survey are available for completion in the local library in Green street at present. This is a good chance for our readers to shape the future of our town, making it a more attractive place to live, work or visit at any time as the feedback will help monitor and develop the town centre ensuring it thrives for years to come. We urge our readers to complete the survey within the next week as the completion date is March 8th. It is possible to complete the survey online also.

PARADES. The big St. Patrick's weekend is coming upon us quickly so it's time to have your own, your clubs or workplace entries ready to take part in one of the many parades around the peninsula this year. So start planning if you have not already done so and make your local parade one of the biggest and best ever in 2025.

Dingle will of course have two parades; the traditional Band March at 6a.m. followed at 12.30p.m. by the floats etc., both starting from Ashmount Terrace.

We have a request from a group in Australia who will be in Dingle that weekend and would welcome anyone with Australian Connections to join with them in the parade on the day.

BUSINESS CHAMBER MEETING. Over 40 people attended the recent open meeting organised by the Business Chamber to gather ideas and suggestions for their action plan for 2025 and beyond. The meeting split into 5 discussion groups each with their own various topics and finished with a lot of achievable ideas some of which are listed hereunder.

• Returnable Coffee Cup Scheme like other successful towns with our own Dingle Cup.

• Housing- the unused areas over many premises in town should be converted where possible.

• Toilets- New planned upgrading at Strand Street to be progressed quickly and toilet facilities for public use needed in Spa Road Mart area.

• Town Park - possibility of opening up new pedestrian access points from Main St and Green St.

• Parking - Two hour parking or similar system successful in other towns urgently needed to free up town centre spaces 6 days a week.

• Sustainability - to work closely with and support wonderful work underway by Dingle Hub personnel in Cooleen.

• Community Hall--- Why has Dingle not got a Community Hall like most other towns and villages and neighbouring parishes.

It is now hoped that the people involved in the discussion groups will do further research and follow up on the achievable points in their ideas . Most can be progressed with the pooling of resources and knowledge and commitment which was very much in evidence at the meeting.

A great start for a much more united approach to a better Dingle.

FREE ADULT HEARING TEST

The next Death Cafe is on March 7th at 7 pm in Annascaul at Aido's Cafe and Pottery. Our last death cafe took place on Jan 31st. It was well attended and a lot of interesting viewpoints came up from those that were there.

We spoke with people that work in hospice scenarios and advise on best practice. We also spoke of people who had near death experiences and how they live their lives and the joy they get from life as a result. Often dreams can awaken things in us that we associate with people who have died and the triggers that might allow us to do things differently in the future.

We spoke of the consolation that people can give to those that are experiencing and grieving in advance of a loved one dying. These meetings usually happen once a month and are a lovely way to spend time with those that wish to speak on the topic of death that they would not usually get a chance to. Anyone is welcome to come and enjoy a piece of cake and a cup of coffee and interesting conversation There is no charge, though we do ask for a donation for a charity of choice. The Art of Fasting and Giving Up

We humans love a good challenge—whether it’s a month without alcohol, a sugar detox or the annual Lenten sacrifice. But fasting and abstinence aren’t just about testing willpower or shedding a few pounds; they have been woven into the fabric of cultures worldwide for millennia, often with deep spiritual, social and health-related significance.

From the Ramadan fast observed by Muslims to the Ekadashi fasts of Hindu tradition or the Buddhist practice of refraining from eating after midday - abstinence from food and indulgence has long been associated with cleansing both body and mind. Even Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, recommended fasting to promote healing, famously stating, “To eat when you are sick is to feed your illness.”

Interestingly, before refrigeration and globalization, fasting was less of a choice and more of a necessity. In farming societies, the late winter and early spring months were naturally lean times. The abundance of Autumn had dwindled and fresh Spring produce was not yet available, meaning people consumed less by default. Traditional fasting practices often mirror this natural cycle, aligning with the body’s need for a metabolic reset after a period of indulgence.

The Science of Fasting and Intermittent Fasting

Modern research backs up what ancient traditions have known for centuries—fasting can be beneficial for the body. Intermittent fasting (IF), the practice of cycling between periods of eating and fasting, has been shown to improve metabolic health, support weight management and enhance insulin sensitivity. Studies indicate that eating within an 8-hour window and fasting for the remaining 16 hours can help regulate blood sugar levels and support a healthier inflammatory response. This method is not dissimilar to the fasting traditions seen in various cultures, suggesting that our ancestors may have intuitively understood something we are only now proving with science.

Fasting has also been linked to autophagy—the body’s process of cleaning out damaged cells and regenerating new ones. Research suggests that intermittent fasting may help reduce the risk of metabolic diseases such as Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular conditions. For those looking to improve healthspan, fasting may be a valuable tool.

Beyond the physiological benefits, fasting has long been associated with improved mental clarity and focus. Many cultures view fasting to enhance spiritual awareness, creating space for introspection and mindfulness. The concept of fasting as a mental discipline extends beyond religious traditions—many modern proponents of fasting report sharper cognitive function and increased productivity. Research suggests that fasting may boost brain function by promoting the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein linked to learning and memory.

Sugar, Alcohol, and Nicotine: Breaking Free from Modern Indulgences

One of the most popular forms of fasting today is abstinence from sugar, often the vice of choice for many attempting to “give up” something. Unlike alcohol or nicotine, which the body can do without, sugar is an essential

energy source, albeit one that modern diets provide in excess. Cravings are often a sign of blood sugar imbalances rather than an actual need for sweets. Managing these by choosing whole foods with naturally occurring carbohydrates—such as vegetables, whole grains, and fruits—can help keep glucose levels stable and curb cravings.

Abstaining from alcohol has its own benefits. Many fasting traditions include periods of alcohol restriction, recognizing its impact on the liver and overall health. Science supports this—excessive alcohol consumption depletes essential nutrients like B vitamins and can lead to dependency. Supplements such as L-glutamine, NAC (N-acetyl-cysteine) have been found to help reduce cravings, while herbs like milk thistle support liver detoxification.

And then there’s nicotine. The hardest habit to break, quitting smoking often leads to weight gain as ex-smokers replace one craving with another. A well-balanced diet, rich in antioxidants and nutrients like selenium, zinc and B vitamins, can help ease the transition and support the body’s detox process.

The Role of Community in Fasting Practices

Another fascinating aspect of fasting traditions worldwide is their communal nature. Many cultures emphasize the collective experience of fasting—Ramadan brings families and communities together for shared iftar meals. Christian traditions often include Lenten fasts that create a sense of solidarity and even modern wellness movements around intermittent fasting have thriving online communities. Having a support system can make fasting a more enriching and manageable experience, reinforcing the psychological and social aspects of the practice.

Ultimately, whether fasting is practiced for religious, cultural or health reasons, the benefits extend beyond the physical. Many report improved mental clarity, a greater sense of discipline and a deeper connection to their bodies. When combined with mindful eating, fasting can encourage us to reflect on our relationship with food, pleasure, and nourishment.

Moreover, fasting does not have to be extreme to be effective. Simple adjustments, such as skipping a meal occasionally, eating within a structured time window or reducing processed foods, can offer profound benefits without drastic deprivation. The key is to find a balance that works for the individual.

While fasting can have health benefits, it is not suitable for everyone. Individuals with medical conditions such as diabetes, eating disorders or those on specific medications should consult a healthcare professional. Prolonged fasting without proper guidance may lead to nutrient deficiencies, low energy levels and potential health risks. Pregnant and breastfeeding women, children and individuals with a history of disordered eating should consider fasting with caution. Personalization and moderation are important to ensure fasting remains safe and beneficial. So, whether you're giving up chocolate for Lent, practicing intermittent fasting or simply exploring a new way to reset and recharge, know that you’re participating in a time-honoured tradition. And with modern science confirming what ancient wisdom has long suggested, there’s never been a better time to embrace the benefits of fasting in all its forms.

I was honoured to be nominated to run in the 27th Seanad Éireann Election on the Agricultural Panel by the Irish South & West Fish Producers Organisation. Although I was not successful, I believe that taking the opportunity was valuable in itself. I extend my sincere gratitude to all the Councillors, TDs, and Senators I had the pleasure of meeting during the campaign. I deeply appreciate the opportunity to have my name on the ballot paper for the 27th Seanad Éireann Election. Thank you to everyone for your support and well wishes throughout this journey. Common Ground: The Irish & Ukrainian Experience

Well done to the Dingle Distillery, NEWKD, SICAP, Coiste Forbartha Pobail Áitiúil Chiarraí, and the team in the Blasket Centre for organising ‘Common Ground: The Irish & Ukrainian Experience’ at Ionad an Bhlascaoid with Larysa Gerasko, Ukrainian Ambassador and Samara Pearce, British Photographer for the Dingle Distillery International Film Festival screening of “Family Album,” and “A Father’s Letter”. This was a wonderful weekend of screenings and talks about the common history that Irish and Ukrainian people share. Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine.

Community Development’s Local Enhancement Programme 2025

As Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council I was very happy to launch the Local Enhancement Programme 2025. This fund is being provided by the Government to support community and voluntary groups.

Chinese New Year Celebrations

I was delighted to join the Chinese New Year celebrations, welcoming the Year of the Snake in Tralee Town Square. The event showcased culture, music, and community spirit, celebrating the contributions of the Chinese community in Kerry. It was an honour to celebrate the Chinese New Year at the Helix in Dublin with His Excellency Ambassador Zhao Xiyuan, the newly appointed Chinese Ambassador to Ireland. I also took the opportunity to extend an invitation to Ambassador Zhao Xiyuan to visit Kerry.

Cliff Coast Destination and Experience Development Plan Launch

I was very happy to welcome everyone to Ballygarry House Hotel for the official launch of the Cliff Coast Destination and Experience Development Plan. This exciting initiative represents a five-year vision for sustainable tourism in North Kerry and West Clare. This is the 5th Experience Development plan for Kerry reflecting the importance of tourism for Kerry. One in 5 jobs are linked to tourism in this county. It is a crucial part of our economy and culture, playing a significant role in job creation, local business growth and community development.

Sr. Catherine Crean, The Holy Family Sisters of St. Emilie and formerly of Knockglass Beg, Camp, died peacefully on 16th February, beloved sister of the late Hugh, Sr. Mary Anthony, Tom, Pat, Mary, Sr. Teresa Ann and Martin.

Sr. Katheen O'Donnell formerly of Slieve represented The Holy Family Community at Sr. Catherine's funeral Mass. Sisters of The Bon Secours Community also attended.

Sadly missed by her loving family, the Holy Family Community throughout the world, her nephews, nieces and their families, sister-inlaw Maureen, her relatives and many friends.

Fr. Eamonn Mulvihill PP and Fr. Tom Crean, former PP, Annascaul concelebrated the requiem Mass in St. Mary's Church Camp on Wednesday and afterwards Sr. Catherine was laid to rest in Camp Cemetery.

Sr. Catherines niece Marcella in a lovely tribute to her Aunt told the story of Sr. Catherines life, from her childhood, losing her mother at a very young age and taking care of her siblings with her father and entering the convent, liv-

ing in France and her vocation and dedication to others all through her life. Sr. Catherine became a chef and was top of her class often catering for 250 people at one sitting. Sr. Catherine loved to come back home and spend time with her family. A toy cow was among the symbols brought to the altar, remembrance of Sr. Catherines love of the family farm in Knockglass Beg.

Threatened to Gut Wife

Kerry News 10 October 1910

A man from Teapot Lane, was charged in custody with assaulting his wife. An information sworn by the complainant was read out and was to the effect that on last Tuesday about 2 0’clock her husband came home and had some drink taken.

He asked her for some money for porter (beer) but she didn’t give him any. He dragged her out into the street, dumped her on the stoney ground and kicked her. He had a knife in his hand and threatened to gut her. His Worship asked her ‘Why did he do this’?

She told the Magistrate that her husband is a man of violent temper when he has drink taken but that he is a good man when he is sober. The prisoner stated he had come home for dinner and asked his wife for the price if a pint. ‘She only gave me the stroke of a bucket on the head’ he said.

Sergeant Crawford said the defendant’s character was not very good. The defendant was convicted and sentenced to one month’s imprisonment.

Big Fire on Dingle’s Main Street

Cork Examiner 15 June 1869

Between 2 and 3 o’clock this afternoon part of a rick of hay, belonging to Mister William Petrie, hotel keeper in this town, was observed to have been on fire. It being a market day a large crowd rushed to render assistance. The Coastguard and Constabulary were promptly in attendance and rendered very valuable aid in subduing the progress of the fire. The former were under the orders of Capt. Mahony, Divisional Officer of the Coastguard and the latter under Head Constable McTavish, both of whom made themselves very useful. Every available means were resorted to in arresting the progress of the fire.

When all hopes of saving the hay from total destruction were given up Capt. Mahony took charge. He gave orders to get long ropes and a ladder so as to capsize the rick with a view to saving a portion of the hay. By this means about a ton and a half of hay was saved out of 7 or 8 tons which the rick contained. The origin of the fire is unknown but it is believed to have been accidental.

Valentia’s First Lifeboat

A fine new lifeboat has been sent to Valentia, on the west coast of Ireland, by the National Lifeboat Institution. Her self-righting qualities were fully tested in the Regent’s Canal Dock, Limehouse (East London).

The full cost of the vessel was £508 which was funded by a benevolent lady. The Institution now has 130 lifeboats and of these 23 are stationed on the coast of Ireland.

(The NLI became the RNLI in 1854 – why didn’t the newspaper used the full title? This was Valentia’s first lifeboat.)

Intelligence reached us this morning of a boating disaster off Ballydavid, Dingle, on Sunday evening as a result of which a man named Bowler lost his life. By the brave action of some fishermen two other occupants of the canoe were rescued. The deceased leaves a wife and a young family.

Hayes got clear of the policemen and was intent in swimming across the river when he showed signs of exhaustion. He was actually going under when Constable Fox, who had taken off his boots, waded out and brought him in with the assistance of Lillis.

While walking in Constable Fox stood on a broken bottle and suffered the most serious injury. He had to be carried to the barrack on the shoulders of four policemen.

(No mention of any sentencing of the two defendants.)

Lispole v Castleisland

At 3:55 pm Mr. Austin Stack had the Lispole and Castleisland teams in line and, on the throw-in the West Kerry men bounded off and a point was scored in a short time. The kick-out was strong but the Lispole men were again invading their opponents’ ground. A goal and three points fell to them before the Castleisland men scored leaving the score at half-time Lispole 1 goal- 4 points, Castleisland -1 point.

In the second half the Castleisland men began to make themselves felt. T. Ashe was strong however for the Lispole side and the Castleisland forwards did not seem capable of coping with the Lispole backs. The match was a good one and was played with splendid spirit with Castleisland taking their defeat in a sportsman-like manner. Final score, Lispole 2 goals – 6 points Castleisland 4 points.

Policeman Seriously Injured in the River Feale

Two young men, Patrick Hayes and Patrick Kenny were charged at the barrack, Kenny for being drunk and Hayes for being drunk and disorderly. Constable Lillis stated that he and Constable Fox were on duty when they saw the defendants fighting in Market Street.

The two men ran off and one of them, Hayes, ran down the steep cliff towards the Feale and both policemen ran after him. The river was at that time up to the base of the cliff so that Hayes and the policemen were in

An Diseart ended January with a special night of poetry in the Fresco Room with bean an tí Ceati Ní Bheldiúin. Our new and seasoned poets performed their wonderfully crafted work while younger members from Scoil Iognáid Rís entertained with their songs and lúibín.

We had a wonderful celebrtion of Lá le Bríde in the Diseart gardens which this year included an exhibition of work in progress from stained glass artist Roisin Ní Chionnfhaolaidh who with the support of Ealain na Gaeltachta was our artist in residence in January. Roísín’s completed exhibits will be on show in the walls of the garden at the end of this month.

Tuismitheoirí na Gaeltachta have a range of classes for babies under 2 and for moms with babies on the way

Music classes continue with the Kerry School of music as well as fiddle classes with Jeremy Spencer.

There are art classes with Dingle Art School, a willow garden course, personal development with Seilí Ann Ní Loinsigh as well as a seasonal living course with Irene Flannery.

An Gairdín

Currently in the garden work is being done to the willow fence and tunnel which needs to be cut and re woven each year. The cuttings will be used to make a new willow tunnel for the convent primary school.

If you have visited our gardens recently, you are likely to have spotted some of the following birds: Robins, rooks, sparrows, blackbirds, great tits, collard doves, chaffinches, goldfinches, jackdaws, ravens, blue tits, starlings, thrushes, magpies, pied wagtails.

We have now started recording birds and plants with a list displayed in the greenhouse so each week you can see what's in flower around the garden or what birds are visiting.

The Díseart didn’t escape storm damage. Sadly, the roof of the Díseart chapel suffered damage and will need to be completely replaced to protect the chapel and the Harry Clarke windows. We will launch a fundraising campaign in the coming weeks to help pay for the damage repair.

Scoil Bhreac Chluain, Primary Schools Badminton

Scoil Bhreac Chluain boys and girls took part in the recent Primary Schools Badminton Competition in Killarney. Over 25 teams from schools in Kerry competed in an A and B competition. Two of these teams went forward for the Munster Finals, which was held in MTU Cork on 19th February. The Scoil Bhreac Chluain girls’ team were very successful and are now going forward to the All-Ireland in Dublin on 5th March. A great achievement by all involved.

As we remember John on his first anniversary, his family would like to thank Donal O’Connor, Funeral Director for his professionalism and guidance through those difficult days. Thanks to the gravediggers who prepared John's final resting place and to his neighbours, relatives and friends who have given support through this difficult time. Thanks to all who sent Mass cards and who kindly posted condolences on RIP.ie, sent letters of sympathy, made telephone calls and to those who travelled long distances to be with us to share in our grief we thank you all most sincerely. We deeply appreciate the care and kindness given by the staff of University Hospital Kerry. A sincere thanks also to John's home helps, the staff of Dingle Day Care Centre, Paud Shea bus driver of Dingle Day Care Centre, to the Doctors, Nurses and the staff of Annascaul Medical Centre who all gave great care to John over the years. We want to thank Fr. Michael Moynihan for the lovely Mass, and Noreen Ashe & Eddie Lee for the lovely music, to John Hanafin of Hanafin's Bar for refreshments and anyone who attended the funeral mass.

As it would be impossible to thank everyone individually please accept this acknowledgment as an expression of our thanks and appreciation. The holy sacrifice of Mass has been offered for your intentions.

Message from Fr Michael Moynihan.

There is an old Latin adage, quid pro quo. It speaks of doing something for someone and that someone doing something for you in return. Being a follower of Christ calls for more. We are called not only to be good to our friends but also called to be good to those we consider 'not' our friends. It makes good sense to be loving toward our family members and friends because they are supportive of us in our time of need. They are there for us and we are there for them. The gospel last weekend (Luke 6:27-38) tells us that, yes, we are to 'treat others as you would like to be treated'. But we are also invited to go beyond this. As Christians, we are called to not judge or condemn others but 'to be compassionate as our Father is compassionate'. Compassion here refers to being generous to others - generous not only with our material possessions but also with our forgiveness.

All we have is God's gifts to us and how we share those gifts is our gift to God. We can share our material possessions with not just our family and friends but also with our neighbours, co-workers, and strangers. We can do this in small ways, we can give a portion of income to charity so that those who are strangers can be fed or given a home.

We are also encouraged to be generous with our forgiveness of others. It seems that this is one of the hardest things for us to do. We can give away our material possessions more easily than forgiving. So where do we start? I think the best place to start is to

look at our own lives. Most of us are aware of how God forgives us. He initially forgave us and welcomed us to his table. We are motivated by God's forgiveness of us first. Then we are asked to pass on this generosity in forgiveness to others

So this week maybe we can forgive someone, especially someone who is not good to us in return. In the Gospel Christ tells us that 'the amount you measure out is the amount that will be measured back to you. We can be generous with our material possessions but even more so with our forgiveness and move beyond quid pro quo.

A Pilgrimage to Lourdes for people of the parishes of west Kerry will take place from Sept 14th to 19th 2025, flying from Cork Airport. I am happy to be Spiritual director of the pilgrimage. The cost is €969pps. A deposit of €350 is asked for at the time of booking. Booking forms are available at the back of the Churches and online at dingleparish.ie. Wednesday next March 5th is Ash Wednesday a day of Fast and Abstinence. As we receive the Ashes on our Forehead we are invited to turn away from our sins and be faithful to the Gospels. Like all invitations we can choose to respond wholeheartedly or ignore the invitation altogether. As followers of Christ we are encouraged to respond positively to the invitation. It will be of benefit to ourselves and those we come in contact with. Trócaire boxes will be distributed in the coming days, through our generosity and compassion we can ease the burden on the lives of many.

Eimear Ní Chonchúir and Éimhín Dalby are volunteers from Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne who recently travelled to Nairobi with Cara Projects. This is a charity founded by Irish volunteers in 2008. It is based in Nairobi, Kenya. They focus in on supporting women and young girls in Kenya who may have been exposed to abuse, sexual assault and many other diseases such as HIV and rabies. While in Kenya Éimhín and Eimear hope to help out the women and girls in the shelter in every way they can. The Cheque amount of €2,148 is the proceeds of donations to the cribs in Lispole, Dingle and Ventry. The young ladies are very appreciative of all the support they received,” Míle buiochas.

Four rounds of Lee Strand West Kerry League have now been completed with one round to go. The top two teams will contest the final. Dingle, currently on 5 points, are guaranteed a final placing. Annascaul on 3 points and An Ghaeltacht on 4 points are in contention for second final placing. These teams meet in Gallarus on 2nd March in what should be a fascinating encounter. Annascaul need to beat An Ghaeltacht but if An Ghaeltacht win or draw they will advance. Given whats at stake a large attendance is expected at this game. Dingle also play Lispole at Lispole on same date. The West Kerry Board would like to thank Lee Strand for once again sponsoring the League.

For the first time more than 40 Irish language and Gaeltacht groups from all over the country went on a half day strike yesterday, 26/02/2025, as part of the campaign RAIC (Solution Now, Fair Investment). We were supporting the campaign and present at the demonstrations in Baile an Fheirtéaraigh with Comharchumann Forbartha Chorca Dhuibhne and in Tralee with Glór na nGael. These funding cuts will affect the community in Corca Dhuibhne and have implications on youth clubs, youth events, drama clubs, summer camps, festivals and businesses all over the peninsula. The strike was organised to call on both Governments north and south to reverse the latest cuts of €820,000 announced recently by Foras na Gaeilge by providing the appropriate funding to Foras na Gaeilge now and to urgently develop a long-term solution for Irish-language funding.

Le cúpla bliain anuas tá tacaíocht tugtha againn do choistí agus imeachtaí difriúla timpeall an bhaile, mar shampla; Féile na Bealtaine, Féile Bídh, Cogar, Ceol am Lóin, Shorinji Kempo Chorca Dhuibhne, Oíche Amhránaíochta agus mórán eile.

Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

This Coconut Chicken Curry is a beautifully balanced dish, rich with warm spices, creamy coconut milk, and tender chicken. Sweet potatoes add a subtle sweetness, while lemongrass and lime bring a fresh, citrusy lift. Slow-simmered for depth of flavour, it’s a hearty yet simple one-pot meal perfect for any occasion.

Served with fluffy jasmine rice and warm naan bread, this curry is both comforting and full of bold, vibrant flavours. Whether you’re a curry lover or new to making them at home, this dish is easy to prepare and sure to become a favourite

Ingredients

800g chicken thighs, cut in pieces

2 tbsp. butter

1 onion, sliced

3 cloves garlic, crushed

1 lemongrass stalk, core removed and chopped

2 tsp. ground ginger

2 tsp. chili powder

1 tsp. turmeric

1 tsp. cumin

1 tin crushed tomatoes

1 tin full fat coconut milk

2 large sweet potatoes, diced

1 lime, juiced

handful of coriander, chopped salt and black pepper rice and naan, for serving

Method

Heat a medium pot over medium-high heat, add a little oil, and brown the chicken pieces. Once browned, remove and set aside.

Reduce the heat slightly, then add the butter, onion, garlic, and lemongrass. Cook for 5-8 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burning. Season with salt and black pepper.

Add the ground ginger, chili powder, turmeric, and cumin. Stir and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

Return the chicken to the pot, then add the crushed tomatoes and coconut milk. Stir in the diced sweet potatoes.

Bring to a simmer and let cook for about 20 minutes, until the chicken is fully cooked and the sweet potatoes are tender. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Stir in the lime juice and sprinkle with fresh coriander.

Serve with jasmine rice and warm naan bread.

Sa Chló Rómhánach, is ceadmhach na focail HATA agus UBH a cheangal le chéile trí H a chur i gcillín an chrosfhocail. Ach i ndáiríre, is aonad é an BH agus is cleachtas amhrasach é an dá litir a scaradh óna chéile. Sa Chló Gaelach, níl aon cheangal idir an dá fhocal san.

Seeing’s believing but how much of our surroundings do we actually see? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but how much beauty do we miss?

Sometimes the world captures our attention and draws us in, like when we see a new baby for the first time and marvel at their little fingers and toes or when we step off a plane in a new country and gaze with wonder at the strange architecture, the different light, the new sights - our attention is sharper, more alert. This is because we are viewing things with a sense of novelty and curiosity. We do this naturally when we see things for the first time.

When we are on automatic pilot , the world can seem dull. We stop noticing things because our brains have gotten used to them. To a point this is efficient and allows us to move through our day without having to manoeuvre everyday objects and scenes as though for the first time. But at what cost? Our experience can become habitual and jaded.

Mindful awareness can shake things up. We can cultivate fresh perception through our sense of sight to awaken wonder and appreciation for everyday objects and scenes. So this week we ‘ll practice seeing intentionally / mindfully.

Take just 3 minutes to sit quietly once or twice a day. This could be a beautiful scenic spot or simply sitting by your window during your lunch break. Once you get the concept you can do this mindful seeing wherever you find yourself - walking around, waiting in line, sitting in your car… we begin to cultivate seeing with fresh eyes.

For now, sitting in a quiet place, making yourself comfortable and if you like, closing your eyes for a moment, feeling your feet on the floor, taking a couple of slow easy breaths and dropping into the body.

When you're ready, opening your eyes, looking straight ahead and noticing what you see. Focusing all your attention on the shapes and colours you see in front of you.

You have probably seen this view many times before but try to imagine it from the perspective of someone who has opened their eyes for the very first time.

Choose to look deeper , observing every little detail. Maybe noticing light, shadow and texture.

Noticing if your mind goes off on a storyline: making associations, being reminded of something you have to do, getting bored… this is to be expected - ‘monkey mind’ likes constant distraction.

Just for this moment, acknowledging the thoughts, letting them go and purposely coming back to engaging your sense of sight. There is no need to interpret or explain the images your eyes receive, simply adopting an attitude of gentle curiosity or ‘beginner’s mind’.

Relaxing any tension you may be holding in the shoulders, jaw, back and when you're ready, slowly and mindfully looking around where you’re sitting - to the right and left, above and below , taking in shapes, colours and maybe noticing the space between the shapes.

Each time the mind wanders bringing it back again and again to the here and now, and the sights before you.

Maybe you'll see things you haven't noticed before, small details or observe things from

a different perspective. There is no right or wrong, everything is welcome.

Continuing to look, and then when you’re ready, coming back to stillness, closing your eyes and just noticing your closed eyes, the changing sensations.

Bringing your attention back to the breath, to the body sitting here and noticing how you feel before you get back to your day.

This practice helps to channel our attention and focus concentration. We can bring these skills to bear on our daily walk to the shop or stroll on the beach or hike out in nature, noticing the sea, trees, grass, animals, people and how they interact with each other and all the elements that make up our world. It’s amazing how we can find joy in our surroundings and the world around us. In a word we are more alert and open to all experience rather that being constantly caught up in out thoughts or distracted by our devices and an overwhelming flow of ‘information’.

Sight plays a very important role in our perception and goes a long way in determining our relationship to the world. Bringing more awareness to this sense helps us to reduce stress and enrich our everyday experience. I welcome any comments, reflections or questions on the email below.

Comhghairdeachas Scoil Cheol an Earraigh agus Comórtas Peile Páidí Ó Sé. What a great weekend for two special events creating a lively atmosphere for the peninsula. Míle buíochas gach éinne. After a great opening of Festivals and Events in February, March will welcome Lá Fhéile Pádraig with our great parades across the peninsula – Baile na nGall, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh, Dingle / Daingean Uí Chúis with two parades, Castlegregory, and Castlemaine. March will also welcome back Animation Dingle on the 21st and 22nd. Bain súp as!

This month, we will also welcome back West Springfield High School pupils, who will visit with their teachers from Sunday March 9th, welcomed and hosted Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne. This long-standing relationship between both schools is wonderful with many lasting friendships between both communities. As the season reopens more fully for visitors, Tourism Ireland has published tourism trends for 2025:

Trend: “Enjoying the moment” – “Mindful travel is a big deal for 2025 as travellers seek to immerse themselves in stunning scenery to recharge and zone out. As travel industry expert Skift notes, for 2025, “Travel’s new cadence is more deliberate, introspective and soulful”. With our landscape that inspires, rejuvenates and allows escape, our walking trail and loops, such as the Dingle Way (176km long), and beaches, the Dingle Peninsula is ideal for “getting away from it all”.

Trend: “Winter destinations” - “We’ve all heard the phrase “there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing” and according to Forbes, many holidaymakers will be eschewing winter sun hotspots in 2025. Instead, they are looking to embrace the seasons and enjoy cold-weather destinations”. As we have seen, perfect for Corca Dhuibhne with our windswept beaches, winter storms, and a fireside pint in our local pubs at the end of the day.

Trend: “Multi-destination trips” –“According to Lonely Travel’s Best in Travel 2025, “trainhopping” is set to be a massive trend for 2025, and thanks to its compact size Ireland is ideal for exploring by rail”. With the ever-progressing success of our Local Link service connecting our towns and villages across Corca Dhuibhne, this allows our visitors to travel in a more sustainable way.
