COUNTY CLEAN UP DAY. Saturday April 12th is the date chosen for the Annual County Clean Up Day this year. Dingle Tidy Towns Group will be meeting at the Bottle Bank in The Tracks from 10a.m. that day and would welcome as much support as possible to try and collect litter from all 8 approach roads out to a distance of 2 km from the town.

REUSABLE COFFEE CUP PROJECT. A good attendance at the recent information evening heard from representatives of the Killarney Reusable Cup Project about how they set about their efforts last year which resulted in a very successful launch with most outlets using the Reuse Cup continuously. The Dingle Cup Project team will now sit down and plan their strategy for an official kick off date to fully introduce their form of the scheme to the public. Certainly a good idea to help reduce the huge amount of plastic waste resulting from the one use cups now in operation which end up not only in litter bins but on street corners, lanes and roadside fences. Keep up the good work folks as slow progress usually yields the best results.

AWARDS. Murphy's Ice Cream which now has 6 outlets and 12 core flavours on its menu were award winners at the recent Irish Food Writers Presentation Night in Galway. The judges commended the quality, integrity and commitment to genuine sustainable products using Kerry Cow local milk right through their 32 years in business.

The continued excellent standards by Helen and Brian Heaton at Castlewood House in Dingle earned them another Gold Medal in the Breakfast Experience Category at the Virgin Media Awards last month.

BUSINESS CHAMBER PLANS. A wide range of suggestions and ideas which were noted at the recent open meeting have now been divided into four likely time frames for progress and completion. Under the titles Immediate, Medium Term, Longer Term and Sustainability are available on the Dingle Business Chamber website, also on the Dingle.ie website and DPTA website. The Chamber now invite members of the public to get involved with small work groups to help progress these ideas particularly in the categories that would be of most interest to them.

ST. PATRICK'S DAY PARADES. Another huge crowd of supporters joined the Dingle Fife And Drum Band at dawn on St Patrick's Day for the traditional 6a.m. march through the streets in what is now acknowledged as Ireland's earliest parade on our national feast day.

The crowds and festive atmosphere was really good again on the streets in the early afternoon for the main parade. Music groups, school pupils and their parents, sporting and voluntary organisations, business and services groups, the Coast Guard and Fire Brigade Units all followed the Fife and Drum Band along the traditional route against the traffic route from Ashmount via the Pier and returned to Ashmount for the second time.

The Danno O'Keeffe Memorial Plaque for Best Entry this year went to the Ukrainian group who dressed in their traditional costumes for the occasion. Great to see them feeling part of our celebrations despite the turmoil which has been inflicted on their lives and their country over the past few years.

A rather disappointing side of the day was the non participation of many local business outlets and organisations who did not avail of the opportunity to be part of our community event again this year. The parade organisers will surely think very hard before deciding to try and put their efforts into such events in future years.

Breathe Easy This Spring: A Nutritional Approach to Hay Fever

As spring stretches into summer, nature bursts into bloom—but for many, that means more than just longer days and birdsong. For Ireland’s hay fever sufferers, it can bring the start of an all-too-familiar struggle: sneezing fits, itchy eyes and a constant supply of tissues. Hay fever—more accurately called allergic rhinitis—is the result of an overzealous immune response to harmless particles like pollen, tree grasses, house dust mites or animal dander. The body treats these irritants like invaders, releasing histamine, which leads to inflammation and a cascade of annoying symptoms.

While antihistamines and steroid sprays offer short-term relief, they don’t get to the root of the issue. From a nutritional therapy perspective, we take a broader, more foundational view—supporting the body’s natural defences and reducing the tendency for overreaction in the first place. The key player? Your gut microbiome.

Your Gut: Where Allergy Season Begins (and Ends)

About 70% of your immune system lives in your gut. In fact, the trillions of microbes that call your intestines home are now recognised as a major influence on whether your immune system reacts appropriately—or overreacts. Current research continues to confirm this:

A 2020 review in Frontiers in Microbiology found that the diversity of the gut microbiome directly influences allergic responses—including hay fever.

A 2022 study in Allergy concluded that probiotic supplementation and microbiome-supportive diets can significantly reduce symptoms in individuals with allergic rhinitis. The takeaway? A nourished microbiome helps train the immune system to respond calmly—not explosively.

Let’s Feed Your Flora: Diet Foundations for Immune Resilience:

Plant Power – A fibre-rich, mostly plant-based diet supports microbial diversity. Include vegetables, whole grains, legumes, fruit, nuts, seeds, herbs and spices daily. Aim for 30+ different plant foods each week.

Prebiotics and Probiotics – Garlic, onions, leeks, bananas, oats, artichoke and asparagus help feed friendly bacteria by providing them with their favourite foods. Live fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir (dairy or coconut) and natural yoghurt (if tolerated) offer probiotic benefits by adding more bacteria into the gut landscape. Remember, if you don’t feed your microbiome with prebiotic foods, it will not thrive and will struggle to provide the regulated immune response that tackling hay fever requires.

Anti-Inflammatory Fats – Omega-3s (found in oily fish, flax, chia, and walnuts) calm inflammation. Avoid pro-inflammatory refined seed oils and those dirty trans fats in processed foods.

Antioxidants Galore – Vibrant fruit and vegetables provide vitamins A, C and E, which help counter the oxidative stress triggered by histamine release.

Spices that Soothe – Turmeric, ginger, cinnamon and garlic all reduce inflammation and support gut health.

Nature’s

Pharmacy: Targeted Nutritional Allies

These natural compounds are shown to reduce hay fever symptoms by modulating immune responses and calming histamine release:

• Quercetin – Found in onions, apples, and berries. Helps stabilise mast cells (the culprits behind histamine release). Supplementation may be needed for therapeutic doses.

• Vitamin C – Lowers histamine levels and supports immune function.

• Butterbur – A natural antihistamine herb (see below).

• Stinging Nettle – Traditionally used for allergies; available in capsules or teas.

• Bromelain – A pineapple enzyme that reduces swelling in nasal passages.

• Probiotics – Particularly strains like Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Bifidobacterium lactis.

As always, check with a health professional before adding new supplements, especially if you are on prescribed medication.

Spotlight on Butterbur: Nature’s Antihistamine

Butterbur (Petasites hybridus) is a traditional herbal remedy gaining scientific attention for its ability to relieve hay fever symptoms. The active compounds—petasin and isopetasin—help reduce inflammation, relax nasal passages and inhibit histamine and leukotriene release, making it a natural alternative to antihistamines. Clinical studies have shown butterbur extract can be as effective as conventional antihistamines, such as cetirizine, without the drowsy side effects. To ensure safety, only use PA-free butterbur supplements—these are free of potentially harmful compounds found in raw butterbur.

Interestingly, this plant grows wild across Ireland, especially near damp hedgerows, riversides and boggy ground. With its large rhubarb-like leaves and pink flower spikes appearing from March to May, it emerges right on cue with hay fever season. While it’s not recommended to harvest or prepare it yourself due to toxicity concerns, its natural timing is a lovely reminder of how nature offers support just when we need it. Look for PA-free butterbur supplements from reputable sources or via practitioner referral. Always consult a health professional before starting any new herbal remedy.

Your Daily Hay Fever Support List:

To make life easier this allergy season, here’s a simple checklist to keep your immune system calm and your symptoms in check:

-Start your day with a glass of water + squeeze of lemon (supports liver detox & hydration)

-Include a source of prebiotic fibre (oats, banana, leeks, onion, garlic)

-Add probiotics if tolerated (live yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut, or a supplement)

-Eat a rainbow of veg and fruit (especially red onions, apples, berries, spinach, kiwi, carrots)

-Include healthy fats (olive oil, walnuts, flax or chia seeds, or oily fish)

-Use anti-inflammatory herbs/spices regularly (turmeric, ginger, garlic, thyme)

-Drink nettle or chamomile tea (both have calming, anti-allergy properties)

-Avoid ultra-processed foods, sugary snacks and cheap cooking oils

-Get outside—but check the pollen forecast and shower after

-Consider using a nasal barrier balm and breathe in and out through your nose when outside

-Wind down with deep breaths or a short meditation (chronic stress can worsen symptoms)

You don’t have to do everything perfectly, but a little consistency goes a long way. Think of it as giving your body a seasonal nudge in the right direction: nourishing your gut so your immune system doesn’t throw a tantrum every time the pollen count rises. With a plant-slanted plate, a happy microbiome and a few smart supports, you can dial down the drama and breathe easier. It’s not about restriction — it’s about giving your body what it needs to thrive. And who knows? This might just be the year you can actually smell the roses without reaching for the antihistamines. 9/11 Memorial and Museum New York

It was an honour to visit the 9/11 Memorial and Museum New York, where I met with the 9/11 Memorial staff and Visionary Co-founder Sean Egan, whose father, FDNY Captain Martin J. Egan, tragically lost his life on 9/11. To pay tribute to the victims, I laid a wreath on behalf of Kerry County Council at the Survivor Tree, which stands as a powerful symbol of resilience and remembrance. St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Marching down 5th Avenue in the St. Patrick’s Day parade in New York is an unforgettable experience. Doing it while representing Kerry County Council as Cathaoirleach is a privilege I deeply appreciate. With all the Green & Gold, you’d nearly think you were on your way to Croke Park to support our mighty Kerry Teams. Still, nothing beats the early morning Dingle Parade! Chiarraí Abú go deo!

Very happy to support patients and staff at West Kerry Community Hospital along with my fellow councillors Robert Brosnan and Tommy Griffin. The unopened wing of the hospital must be opened to serve patients from West Kerry, and it is critical to address the ongoing staffing level challenges immediately. At our next meeting of Castleisland Corca Dhuibhne Municipal District I have tabled a motion asking the “Minister for Health and the HSE to address the issues caused by the changes to staffing levels at West Kerry Community Hospital immediately and when they will fill all vacant positions due to retirements or departures and could they outline plans for Module 1.”

ST PATRICK'S DAY - LÁ FHÉILE PÁDRAIG

Over the weekend the Irish came out to celebrate St. Patrick all over the world at home and abroad. There are indeed some great traditions associated with the parade all over the world. Just looking at a few places that uphold these customs to the present day, where the Irish come out to celebrate in style.

In Morrison, New Jersey, Jack Downs cut the ribbon to begin St. Patrick's Day on Saturday.

Camp has been home from home for Jack and Anne for many years now and everyone is delighted to see Jack honour his Irish heritage and perform an official duty on St. Patrick's Day. Glad to see himself and Anne looking in the best of health too.

In London our Camp /Kerryman of the Year for 2024 PJ Crean was also prominent in the London Parade and celebrations. PJ was joined by other Kerry dignitaries, Minister Norma Foley TD FF and Councillor Fionnan Fitzgerald FF leading the parade through London on St. Patrick's Day.

In Seattle a Camp woman, Marie Theresa Sogabe O Connor was officiating at the St. Patrick's Day festivities in her role as President of the Galway/Seattle Sister City.

Patrick O’Donovan TD FG and Minister for Arts, Culture, Communications, Media and Sport, Leonard Cleary, CEO, Galway Co. Council and Josie Ford, Deputy Mayor of Galway were among the Irish dignitaries in attendance. .

The painting of the green stripe along the parade route is a tradition in Seattle started by an Irish man, John Doyle Bishop back in the 1960’s. On Friday evening, the spirit of the Irish in the city and this wonderful tradition was once again upheld when the Parade Grand Marshall Meath man, John Keane began proceedings painting the green stripe down the centre of 4th. Street, Seattle. Everybody joined in and to finish a Camp woman Regina O'Connor painted the green shamrock on the square.

Our Kerry, Rose of Tralee Emer Dineen was in the USA too. In New York wearing Irish fashion designer Deirdre De Burca's wonderful creations. Emer was in Chicago too, where the river runs green for St. Patrick. Thousands lined the river and packed bridges on Saturday, cheering on the Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Union who sprayed green dye into the water from boats, carrying on a tradition they began some 63 years ago. The dyeing immediately preceded the annual downtown St. Patrick's Day parade.

West Kerry Co. Councillor and Mayor of Kerry Breandán Ftizgerald also carried the flag for Ireland in cities in the US throughout the weekend.

And in Dingle, at 6.00 a.m in the morning people arose to the sound of music leading the parade through the town. Independent TD Minister

Michael Healy Rae joined them. A great tradition too!

What an amazing gathering for Irish people all over the world celebrating their heritage and their homeland. Well done to all who work hard every year organising St. Patricks Day at home and abroad. Congratulations all

Teacher Found Dead

Kerry Reporter 18 December 1915

It is with feelings of the most profound regret that we must announce the death of Mr. Patrick Sugrue, the Principal Teacher of the Mastergeehy National School under very melancholy circumstances.

From the scarcity of information available it appears that Mr. Sugrue had been in Waterville on Saturday at a meeting of the shareholders of Waterville Co-operative Society and proceeded towards his home in the evening which turned out to be very wet and stormy.

On yesterday morning his body was found on the public road, a short distance from his home, his life being extinct. This sad death has cast a gloom over the district. It is not yet known if an inquest will be held.

Blasket Widow.

Kerry Reporter 16 September 1916

An appeal has been made to relieve distress of a widow and her family on the Blasket Islands. Some subscriptions have been sent in but much more would have been expected. It appears that the family – like many Blasket Islanders – speak only the Irish Language and no other.

Shot Through The Head

-Kerry Evening Post 01 March 1916

News of the death from a bullet wound of Private John Dore, Cliveragh, Listowel, has been received by his parents and many friends with great sadness, The deceased hero, who was better known by his friends as ‘Johnny Dore’, was a splendid example of Irish manhood, standing six feet tall.

He left his native home on 05 August 1914 and went to the front in France. He wasn’t long there when he was involved in the battle of Mons. Later he took an active part in the battle of Marne, Ypres and Hooge. Then on to the terrible pitched battle of Loor where he was shot through the head. He survived in hospital for eighteen days before succumbing to his wound. He was buried with full military honours.

Assault with a Scissors

-Kerry Evening Post 29 July 1914

John Leary, Boherbee, Tralee, was charged by Denis Tangney with assaulting him with a scissors. The men are working together at Mr. Lynn’s, the tailor. Tangney asked Leary to clean up his place of work. Leary refused and then hit Tangney with a scissors, cutting him on the neck. A warrant has been granted for Leary’s arrest.

Farmer shot on way home from Puck

-Drogheda Conservative 17 August 1889

A farmer named P. K. Teahan, from a village near Killorglin, was returning home from Puck Fair on Thursday night when he was fired at by a party of men.

Four shots were discharged at the man. One bullet struck his jaw while a second wounded his hip. He lies in a house near Cara Lake (sic) and can identify his assailants, three of whom have been arrested. No motive has been disclosed.

Train Fell Over

-General Advertiser for West Cornwall 05 October 1889

The Listowel single line Lartigue railway was returning from Ballybunion with holiday seekers when it fell over on its side about three miles from Listowel on Sunday evening. The train was not evenly balanced which is necessary on the single line rail system.

Some three or four persons were injured. If the accident had happened a few yards nearer Listowel, on a bridge crossing the River Geale, the consequences could have been disastrous.

Mystery of the Matchmaker

-Witness (Belfast) 22 June 1877

Circumstances connected with the disappearance of a man named Michael Moriarty indicate that a tragedy has been perpetrated in the neighbourhood of Castlegregory. It appears that on the 11th of February last Michael Moriarty went to Castlegregory to discuss business.

While there he visited a public-house and was engaged in match-making for his son, also Michael Moriarty. He left Castlegregory between ten and eleven o’clock that night, in company, it is said, with a woman, but he never reached home.

Up to now no tidings of his whereabouts have been discovered. The son reported that he and Dan Courtney found signs of a struggle on the sand bank by the shore. His father’s shoes were recently found about the place and his father’s trousers, turned inside out, was found some distance away

The police intend making a diligent search of the locality where the son

The Parish Next Door

New

Exhibition by David Scarff

David Scarff's new exhibition at the Marina Centre in Dingle is a welcome return for the artist after a 12 year hiatus. A sculptor who would have held regular exhibitions, he went through a 12 year period of not producing any work but concentrating more on sketches and drawings, “ a sculptor’s bloc “ so to speak.

David, was born in Dublin and studied sculpture in N.C.A.D for 5 years and then a further 5 years in the Royal Art Academy in Stockholm, Sweden. On finishing his studies he was invited to teach in an art college in Stockholm which he did for a further 15 years.

One of the benefits of practically living in an art college for 25 years is the easy access to a fully equipped workshop and studios and David would have held yearly exhibitions of his work.

In 2010 David moved back to live in Dún Chaoin, leaving the insulated art world behind him. During this period he found that his relationship with contemporary art changed and he started to question the relevance of it all. Realizing that he had lived in a sort of social art bubble he felt that some of it was a case of the emperor’s new clothes and turned more towards the nature surrounding him. To paraphrase Van Morrison “ No workshop, no teacher, just I and I in nature in the Diseart Garden.

This creative obstacle came to an abrupt end one sunny morning on the 23 June 2023 when he woke up with an unaccustomed energy both physically and mentally.

That morning before finishing his coffee he went out to the garden, grabbed an old fence post that had been lying in the long grass and carved a rabbit with an axe before lunch. He has been wood carving nearly everyday since.

You need better quality wood in order to carve in detail than a pine fence post and he found that quality wood in an unusual place. He gathered together old teak doors from the local school and old houses around Dún Chaoin and two old back doors from Dick Mack’s Pub, gratefully donated by Finn.

Inspired by The Blasket islands, The New York skyline and the connections between us, he carved the intricate details into these doors and the result can be seen in his new exhibition "The Parish Next Door", opening on April 11th in the Marina Centre, Dingle.

Local Filmmaker Making Documentary on The Phoenix Cinema's Impact on Corca Dhuibhne

Local filmmaker Aideen O'Sullivan is currently working on a short documentary that explores the rich history and cultural significance of The Phoenix Cinema in Corca Dhuibhne. The film will trace the cinema’s journey from its re-opening in July 1980 to its closure in March 2020, highlighting its role as a beloved community hub over the decades. The documentary will tell this story through interviews and old photos from those who have fond memories of The Phoenix.

Aideen is seeking to gather old photographs in and around the cinema from this period, particularly from the 1980s,1990s and 2000s to help bring the story to life. If you have any photos taken at the cinema during this time—whether it’s from your first trip to the cinema, visiting Santa, celebrating a birthday, or another memorable moment—she would love to include them in the documentary.

Please send your photos, along with a few lines about the memory behind the photo, your full name and phone number to aideenosu@ gmail.com

Famine Commemoration Plans for Dingle

One hundred and eighty years ago Ireland was devastated by the most catastrophic natural disaster ever to befall the country. That period in our history is remembered as the Great Famine, or An Drochshaol, in West Kerry and beyond.

A small group of people from around West Kerry have come together to commemorate the Famine which wiped out so many families in this area and forced countless numbers to emigrate.

The group includes Bosco O Conchúir, Micheál Ó Coileáin, Neasa Uí Mhoráin, Isabel Bennet and Ted Creedon. They will be staging a bi-lingual exhibition on the Famine in Dingle Library for two weeks beginning on Monday May 12.

The library staff have welcomed the initiative and County Librarian Tommy O’Connor has promised to provide exhibition stands from Tralee headquarters. Schools are encouraged to visit the library while the exhibition is in place.

The Mayor of Kerry, Breandán Fitzgerald has been invited to open the exhibition on Thursday, May 15.

On Saturday, May 17th, Dr. Conor Brosnan, who is currently researching a book on the Famine, will deliver a talk on his findings at a venue to be finalised.

On Sunday, May 18, a commemoration ceremony is planned to be held in the Famine field overlooking the town and harbour.

The event will include a brief overview of visible structures from the Famine period, with Isabel Bennet; Folk memories of the period west of Dingle, compiled by Cathal Póirtéir, will be read by members of Aisteoirí Bhréanainn.

There will be music, poetry, wreath laying and words from Father Jim Sheehy. In the event of bad weather, Parish Priest Father Michael Moynihan has kindly offered St. Mary’s Church as the alternative venue for the events. It is expected that these events will take about one hour.

Dingle Skellig Hotel Staff Raise €1,600 for Friends of West Kerry Community Hospital

The team at Dingle Skellig Hotel were delighted to present their fundraising cheque of €1,600 to this year’s staff chosen charity Friends of West Kerry Community Hospital. The funds were raised by staff, from staff, during the hotel's staff night out, reflecting a deep commitment to supporting the local community and, in particular, the elderly residents of the West Kerry Community Hospital.

The cheque was presented to representatives of the charity, which is dedicated to enhancing the well-being of patients at the hospital. Friends of West Kerry Community Hospital works tirelessly to provide engaging activities and purchase much-needed equipment that is not always available through the health service. Their initiatives, such as art classes, social events, and mobility aids, play a crucial role in promoting the mental, emotional, and physical health of the elderly residents.

Speaking at the presentation, Rosarii Galvin Hotel Deputy General Manager said, “We are delighted to support such an important cause. The work that Friends of West Kerry Community Hospital does to enrich the lives of its patients is truly inspiring, and we’re honoured to contribute to their efforts.”

Pictured at the presentation with staff from the Dingle Skellig Hotel are representatives from Friends of West Kerry Community Hospital Eileen O’Connor, Nina Long, MacDara O’Dalaigh and Diarmuid Begley.

Comfortable in my Own Skin

I’m shedding my skin

I’m getting free

From the suit of armour

That was hiding me

I’m carving my niche

I’m finding my slot

I’m taking my place

I’ll give it a shot

I’m finding my voice

Does it sound off key?

Is my accent strange?

Well that’s just me

Cad é an chéad chéim eile don bpróiséas pleanála teanga?

Bhí teacht le chéile sa Ghaillimh le déanaí chun plé a dhéanamh ar an gcéad chéim eile sa phróiséas pleanála teanga. Nuair a cuireadh tús leis an bpróiséas pleanála teanga cuireadh plean seacht mbliana le chéile do na haon Limistéar Pleanála Teanga & Baile Seirbhíse Gaeltachta. Tá cuid de na pleananna san anois ag teacht chun críche, Plean Teanga LPT Chiarraí Thiar, atá á fheidhmniú ag Tobar Dhuibhne, san áireamh. Beidh plean nua le hullmhú don gcéad seacht mbliana eile. Tá Dréimire coimisiúnaithe ag Údarás na Gaeltachta agus iad ag tabhairt fé thacaíochtaí difriúla a fhorbairt a thacóidh leis an bpróiséas. Níl aon eolas fós againn ar cé a bheidh ag tabhairt fé na pleananna nua a ullmhú, ach is cinnte go mbeadh tuairimí an phobail á lorg.

We were in Galway recently to discuss the next steps in the language planning process. When the language planning process began 7 year plans were prepared for the language planning areas and the language service towns. Some of these plans are now coming to an end, the language plan for West Kerry that’s being implemented by Tobar Dhuibhne included. A new plan for the next 7 years will have to be prepared. Údarás na Gaeltachta have commissioned Dréimire to prepare some supports that might help this process. We don’t know yet who will be preparing the new plans, but we are certain that we will be looking for opinions from our local communities.

Solar Systems

- Féach ar an mbéile breá san!

Tom Kennedy

-Glaoigh ar … le áirithint a dhéanamh

- Look at that fine meal!

- Call us on … to make a booking

Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.

- Cúpla bord fághta tráthnóna

- Rogha leathan ar fáil!

- Draíochtúil

- a few tables available this evening

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine. There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

- Tar ar thuras linn

- Bain triail as ár …. nua

- Caith lá linn i gCorca Dhuibhne

- Fan linn agus tú i gCorca Dhuibhne

- Wide range of choices available

- Come on a tour with us

- Try our new …

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

- Spend a day with us in Corca Dhuibhne

- Stay with us while your in Corca Dhuibhne

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

- Tá rudaí níos deise i gCorca Dhuibhne

- Things are better in Corca Dhuibhne

A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

Chashu Pork (Japanese Braised Pork Belly)

This is definitely worth a try if you love cooking pork belly and are looking for something a little different. When cooked, this is so soft and full of flavour. This is a Japanese dish and is normally served with noodles however it is also delicious served with rice or even sliced and put on a sandwich. Don’t be put off with the amount of soy sauce you have to use. Do find a dark soy sauce which will give you more caramel flavours and will have less salt than a light soy sauce. Give this a go and I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Ingredients

500g pork belly

salt

½ tbsp. oil

nice piece of ginger, sliced

spring onions, cut roughly

1 leek, cut into chunks

150ml water

100ml sake (use a dry sherry or white wine if you can’t find sake)

200ml dark soy sauce

2 tbsp. brown sugar

oil for cooking

Method

Rub the pork belly with some salt especially over the skin.

Heat a pan and add some oil. Add the pork belly and brown well all over. Don’t be in a panic here, allow it to colour really well without burning. Meanwhile put the rest of the ingredients in a pot and bring to the boil, turn it down to a simmer and then add the pork belly. Place a plate over the meat to keep it submerged. Cook it like this, over a low temperature, for about 2 hours, or until it is very tender. You may have to add some extra water to the pot if the liquid is getting too low. The meat is cooked when you pierce the meat with a knife and it feels tender. Carefully remove it from the pot and place it on a plate. Reduce the remaining sauce over a medium heat and allow it to become sticky. Slice the meat and pour the sauce over it.

Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance Tourism News

Into April we go and Easter will be a little later this year, Friday 18th to Monday 21st, with Ride Dingle following on Saturday 26th. A busy couple of weeks lie ahead before Féile na Bealtaine. Nuacht

We recently had the pleasure of welcoming Emmy Kristiansen, our 2025 Eurovision Song Contest representative, and the team from Tourism Ireland Nordic region – Des Burke, Ita Woods and Sam Kwan. Emmy was set five challenges while here which we will share with you when published in the coming weeks. Sincere thanks to those who made Emmy’s visit so magical – Tomás Ó Sé, Aedáin Ó hUallacháin at Hold a Baby Lamb & Beehive Huts, Cristín de Mordha of Dúchas an Daingin, Gabriel Kavanagh at The Famine Cottage, Trevis Gleason, Muireann at Dingle Distillery, Óisín and Stephen McPhilemy of Milltown House, Finn MacDonnell at Dick Mack’s, Niamh O’Brien, musicians, and the team at Benners Hotel. Go n-éirí leat Emmy!

Continuing on the series of tourism trends for 2025 published by Tourism Ireland, here are their final three to consider:

Trend: “Hotel-restaurant renaissance” – “according to Expedia, 2025 will be the year of the hotel restaurant renaissance, with hotels putting increased emphasis on delivering high-quality food”, and in Dingle, our hotels have always prioritised great food……

Trend: “Set-jetting” – “according to Wanderlust Travel Magazine, many holidaymakers are choosing destinations inspired by their favourite film or TV programme and from windswept beaches and dramatic cliffs to picturesque towns and bustling cities”. Here, our scenery has attracted a diversity of films from Playboy of the Western World to Oscar winning Ryan’s Daughter, Far and Away to Star Wars where Chewbacca was the big hit with Scoil Naomh Pádraig. Ryan’s Daughter still brings visitors to Dún Chaoin fiftyfive years on and was nominated for four Oscars winning two for Cinematography, where the peninsula’s landscape was the star attraction, and Best Supporting Actor, Sir John Mills, who won an Oscar without saying one word!

Trend: “Going eco” – “while tourist hotspots remain popular, Forbes is predicting a greater interest in sustainable holidays that allow ecoconscious travellers to explore with less of an impact”. With our unspoilt countryside, pristine beaches, farmlands, the cleanest of waters and a great Local Link service across the region, the Dingle Peninsula is a haven for those looking for the great outdoors. With a commitment to slow tourism, Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance promotes the peninsula as a destination rather than an attraction to encourage visitors to come and stay, and stay longer right across the peninsula. With so many eco type activities – links golf, walking trails and our 176km Dingle Way, bicycle hire, horse riding, Dingle Aquarium, Blasket Centre, Sandy Feet Farm, heritage trails and sites on the land, complimented by windsurfing, kitesurfing, surfing, winging, swimming, water adventure centres, kayaking, and boat trips at sea. These are complimented even further with our cultural highlights of local music, song, dance, storytelling, poetry, art, crafts and local food produce! We are so lucky to have such amazing choice on offer locally! https://www.tourismireland.com/international/news-releases/article/ travel-trends-for-2025

“Eco tourism” also sits beside “Regenerative Tourism” and it is terrific to write that ten of our local businesses completed the recent training and coaching programme in Regenerative Tourism through the EU Funded CE4RT (Circular Economy for Regenerative Tourism) Programme. They are: Dingle Boat Tours, Dingle: Dingle Farm, Pharóiste Mhór; Anne’s Coffee Bar, Camp; Dingle Sea Safari, Dingle; Gleann Loic Farmhouse, Dún Chaoin; Cill Bhreac House, Dingle; Dingle Garden Townhouse, Dingle; Dingle Aquarium Mara Beo, Dingle; Mossie’s Tours, Dingle Peninsula; and Louis Mulcahy Pottery, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh. Comhghairdeachas gach éinne!

Club Óige Lios Póil i bpáirt le Pleanálaí Teanga Thobar Dhuibhne B’ócáid shuaithinseach agus thábhachtach do Chlub Óige Lios Póil pleanálaí teanga Thobar Dhuibhne, Barra Ó Siochrú, a bheith rannpháirteach le déagóirí an pharóiste in Ionad Pobail Lios Póil ar an Aoine seo chaite. Suas le deichniúr ar fhichead déagóirí ó bhlianta 1, 2 is 3 na meánscoile a ghlac páirt i seisiún Tráth na gCeist, a mhair breis is uair a’chloig fé stiúir ag Barra, agus le cúnamh ó choiste tuistí an chlub. Roinneadh na déagóirí i bhfoirne de thriúr, cheathrar nó chúigear. Bhí béim sna ceisteanna ar eolas faoina gceantar féin idir phearsain phoiblí i réimsí cumarsáide, spóirt, pobail is polaitíochta, agus dúshlán i gceisteanna eile a d’éiligh abairtí is nathanna i nGaelainn sa bhfreagra. B’é seo an chéad bhabhta ag pleanálaí teanga Thobar Dhuibhne bheith i bpáirt le déagóirí Lios Póil ar a bhfód dúchais fhéin. I gcomhrá liom i ndiaidh na h-ócáide, mhínigh Barra dom gurb é an sprioc a bhíonn aige le h-imeachtaí dá leithéid seo, ‘normalú a dhéanamh ar an dteanga le linn gníomhaíochtaí spraoi i gcomhthéacs sóisialta na ndeagoirí, seachas sa suíomh scoile, b’fhéidir.’ Beagchéim, ach céim eile chun cinn í seo i bhforbairt na Gaelainne i Lios Póil. Moladh agus buíochas leis na déagóirí agus a dtuistí dílse a thacaigh leis an ócáid, agus gan dabht, le Barra fhéin.

Bhí de phléisiúr agam a bheith i láthair i Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh cúpla seachtain ó shin le linn Scoil Cheoil an Earraigh do sheoladh an leabhair thuas-luaite. An t-Athair Eoghan Ó Cadlaigh, Sagart Paróiste Bhaile an Fheirtearaigh a sheol go paiteanta, agus a bhuíochas dá spreagadh go bhfuil an foilseachan ar an bhfód. Ní tuairisct ar imeachtaí taitneamhacha an tseolta, ná ní léirmheas ar an leabhar é seo ach oiread, ach cuireadh chun a cheannaithe is a léite araon. Ní mar mhaíomh, ach go fírinneach a luaim gur cheannaíos seacht gcóip den leabhar ar ocáid a sheolta – cóip an duine dár cheathrar clainne, ar spéis leo dreapadh cnoic is sléibhe, a bheidh mar bhronntanas breithlae ina nduine is ina nduine acu in am tráth, móide glaic cóipeanna dom chairde. Mar bharr air sin, tá cnuasach saibhir dánta sa leabhrán – dán is fiche, ó aonar déag file áitiúil. Beidh dáimh ag éinne a dhreap Cnoc Bréanainn leis an bhfilíocht rí-phearsanta seo a chuireann friotal ar fhreagairt na bhfilí do dhiamhaireacht Chnoc Bhréanainn agus an traidisiún oilithreachta a bhaineann leis. Ar deireadh, má theastaíonn sos ón léitheoireacht uait, tá an foilseachán maisithe go tarraingteach le grianghraif ábhartha, agus mar bharr air sin go léir, le léarscáil luachmhar de Chnoc Bhréanainn lena logainmneacha líonmhara (a chrughaigh Máirín Uí Shé agus Dómhnal ó Bric) mar, ‘Cosán an Turasa’, ‘Eisc an Turasa’, ‘Faobhar an Turasa’ agus ‘Barra an Turasa’ gan ach an beagán a lua. Feabhas ar Chúrsaí Imeartha

Mícheál Ó hUanacháin

Tá lucht na Ríochta ag éirí an-iltíreach go deo, agus ag cur leis go tréan. An tseachtain seo caite fógraíodh imreoir eachtrannach eile chugainn, Eemeli Honkola, tosach ionsaitheach ó SJK, nó mar is oifigiúla aithint air, Seinäjoen Jalkapallokerho, club bunaithe i gcathair bheag Seinäjoki in iar-dheisceart na Fionlainne. Imreoirí as naoi dtír ar fad atá anois ar na leabhair i dTrá Lí, mar aon le triúr eile a rugadh anseo de shliocht Nígéireach.

Bhí Honkola ag imirt i bPríomh-Roinn a thíre dúchais go dtí gur aistrigh sé anseo, agus cáil an scórálaí ar an bhfear óg 20 bliana. Beifear ag tnúth lena fheiceáil ar an bpáirc imeartha sara fada. Bhí sé i measc na bhfear ionaid don chluiche in aghaidh Loch Garman, ach níor tugadh chun páirce é.

Ó luaite cluiche Loch Garman, leanfaimid leis. B'é an chéad bhua ag na leaids as baile, agus seolann sé in airde iad ina measc siúd a bheidh ag súil bheith san iomaíocht don ardú céime ag deireadh an tséasúir. Ba dheacair tús ní b'fhearr a shamhlú dóibh i bpáirc Chaladh na Carraige, nuair a d'éirigh le Joe Adams an liathróid a chur thar chúlbáire Loch Garman, Paul Martin, sa dara nóiméad, bhí lucht tacaíochta na Ríochta fíor-shásta.

Ach níor thada é sin le hais an ghliondar a bhí orthu dhá nóiméad ina dhiaidh sin, nuair a fuair Chris McQueen radharc ar an liathróid le linn sciob sceab os comhair Martin, agus threoraigh sé isteach sa líontan í. Dhá chúl chun tosaigh, agus gan cúig nóiméad féin imeartha! Ábhar sástachta do Conor McCarthy, gan dabht, an dá cheann bheith faighte ag beirt de na himreoirí a thug sé isteach idir an dá shéasúr.

Ach tá's ag an lá gur deacair dhá chúl a chosaint ar feadh 90 nóiméad, agus b'shin mar a chruthaigh sé. Throid muintir Loch Garman go fíochmhar, agus fuaireadar a chúiteamh san agus an cluiche ag druidim chun deiridh, Mikie Rowe ag breith ar an liathróid nuair ná ghaibh Tim-Oliver Hiemer i gceart é. Bhí sceitimíní faitís ar an lucht tacaíochta ar eadh an ceathrú uaire a chloig deireanach san, agus imní orthu go dtarlódh tubaist roimh an fhead deiridh. Ba bheag an sólás dóibh an fhoireann baile bheith fágtha ag braith ag deichniúr nuair a díbríodh Darragh Levingston agus dhá nóiméad agus an t-am cúiteamh ghortaithe le dul. Ach thángadar slán.

Bhí ard-deireadh seachtaine ag foirne acadaimh (na foirne faoi aois) Lucht na Ríochta chomh maith. Cúig chinn acu a chuaigh chun páirce ar an Satharn agus an Domhnach, agus thugadar ceithre bhua leo. Is cosúil, dála an scéal, gur polasaí ag lucht riartha na gcluichí san anois é, chomh fada agus is féidir, cluichí na sóisear a ghrúpáil le chéile chun brú costaisí taistil ar an clubanna a laghdú.

Ar ais i measc an sinsear, más ea, agus súil siar ar an gcluiche i mBaile Longfoirt. Bhí mí-ádh ar fhoireann Chiarraí sa chluiche sin, ainnein gur aimsigh Niall Brookwell cúl na cothramaíochta tar éis to Joshua Giurgi amn fhoireann baile a chur chun cinnlaistigh de 20 nóiméad. Bhain an

déagóir Luke Palmer a chéad chúl sinsearach do na Ciarraígh díreach roimh leath-ama, ach tháinig an Baile ar ais go gairid tar éis an tsosa, arís le cúnamh Giurgi, agus chuadarsan chun cinn agus gan ach fiche nóiméad lena imirt, an fear ionaid Aaron Walsh a scóráil.

Sna nóiméidí deireanach, bronnadh cic éirice ar Lucht na Ríochta, ach chuir Cian Brosnan beagán ró-ard é. Tá súil agam nach gcuirfidh an teip san isteach ró-mhór é. Is rud amháin cúlbáire ag sábháil cie éirice, rud eile ar fad ceann a sheoladh ar strae.

Is cuimhin liom Eddie Gormley, duine de laochra na Sraithe tráth, ag glacadh cic éirice in am cúiteamh ghortaithe, tráthnóna amháin. Sheol sé chomh hard é go mbeadh deacracht ag Hawkeye a dhéanamh amach ar phointe a bhí ann! Ghoil an teip go mór air, agus bhí sé roinnt seachtainí go raibh sé ar ais ar a shean-léim. Nárab amhlaidh de Brosnan é.

It's All In The Mind

The Love Affair With Life

Orla Smyth

Lately, it seems like the trajectory of human progress has taken a nosedive : the rug has been pulled from under us and in the midst of all the unrest, hatred and destruction, it is very hard to find a solid footing. There is a sense of helplessness and despair that can often feel overwhelming.

So, without denying for a second the suffering and injustice that is being perpetuated, near and far I think it is important to recognise all the love and goodwill in the world that doesn't make the headlines. For every bomb that is dropped, hundreds rush to help: for every falsehood proclaimed thousands of voices shout the truth, for every innocent life that is taken, millions mourn the loss.

There is goodness in the world and in every one of us. We are capable of fierce compassion and it can be our driving force.

We need to move away from the individualism of the culture and economy that dominates in modern society. Happiness will never come at

Message from Fr Michael Moynihan.

Every now and again we hear of tragedies. It might be an act of war where several people lose their lives or an earthquake or other natural disaster. Sometimes people we know die suddenly. While we mourn the loss of life, we often find ourselves saying they got no chance. No chance to help or save themselves. It seems unfair. The gospel for last Sunday (Luke 13: 1-9) has been described as the Gospel of the second chance. Jesus refers to some recent tragic events and then tells the story of a landowner who had planted a fig tree. The tree produces no fruit when expected. The farmer wanted it cut down, but the gardener wanted to give it another year. The story gives us an opportunity to reflect on second chances in our lives. I think we have all received a second chance sometime in our life, a chance to start over. It might be forgiveness from a family member or a co-worker, it may have been something big or small. Jesus reminds his listeners that we ought not to judge. We were all given a second chance even though we do not produce much fruit. Jesus calls all of us to give others a second chance as we were given a second chance by God. We find it difficult to forgive others who have done us wrong. We can also find it difficult to forgive ourselves when we do something wrong. Our good intentions at the beginning of lent may have fallen by the wayside. We may feel like giving up on lent. It is important to begin again. We are encouraged to do so. As we continue our Lenten journey and reflect on our lives maybe we can ask ourselves who in our lives is in need of a second chance from us. Who is desperately waiting another chance to start over? Is there someone whom we can forgive and give a new lease on life to? Maybe it is our child because of something they have recently done. Or maybe it is a friend who betrayed us or someone at work with whom we do not see eye to eye. Or maybe we are the one in need of a second

a cost to someone else. To heal society we have to embrace our common humanity because our basic natures are the same. We all share an identical need for love and a dependency on others.

For the past few weeks we've been looking at how we can improve our own well being and live our one and only precious life in a more joyful and loving way, by better dealing with stress, anxiety and pain. Only by getting in touch with our own feelings, tendencies and thought processes in a non-judgemental and compassionate way, can we begin to know others, so that rather than division and ‘othering’ we experience a kind of universal altruism. This , in turn allows us to benefit from enlightened self interest : what’s good for my neighbour is good for me! By beginning to slow down and experience the present moment we pay attention to the senses, shifting the focus from the busyness and sometimes tyranny of our thoughts to the sensations of the body. This is an experiential practice and cannot just be learnt or understood intellectually. However, unless this practise is infused with certain attitudes it is not mindfulness’

A sniper possesses single minded focus, absolute precision and total command of his powers of concentration, but his intent may be to cause harm. In contrast, you cannot intentionally inflict harm or be ill intentioned when you practice mindful awareness. It is purely a force for good by virtue of the fact that the elements, namely the 9 attitudes posited by Jon Kabat Zinn are intrinsic to its very nature.

These are the following :

-Non-judgment

-Patience

-Beginner’s mind

-Trust

-Non-striving

-Acceptance

-Letting go

-Gratitude

-Generosity

These characteristics are aspirational but non negotiable They are not just optional add-ons to any kind of meditation or mindful practice. These are the practice and they are the basis for an ongoing love affair with life!

chance. Can we ask someone for another chance? Maybe we need to go to our spouse, family member or someone at work and ask for a second chance. Whether we are the ones in need of a second chance or the ones who can offer a second chance, this week we can take the Lenten journey a little more seriously together. We can each ask ourselves who in our life needs a second chance and who do I need a second chance from? Then we can offer thanks at the end of Lent for a second chance at living the gospel anew. God gives us a second chance. We pray that we will use this opportunity wisely. This week give someone a second chance!!

During Lent we remember those involved with Trócaire and we are encouraged to support them in whatever way we can. Visit trocaire.org for more. Some people take the opportunity to pray the stations of the Cross each day during Lent. We hope to organise a Walk for water during Holy week in solidarity with all those who have to walk for water on a daily basis. I take this opportunity to wish the Staff and Students of Sacred Heart University, Dingle continued success and all Gods Blessings as they officially open the Dingle Campus on Friday next.

Wishing you all Gods blessings as we continue our Lenten journey.

`Seo smaoineamh mianúil do bhuail mé an leabhar so do cheapadh, chun cuideachta agus gáirí a dhéanamh do sheanmhná an Bhlascaeid, mar is mór go léir an cion agus an grá a bhí acu orm nuair a bhuailinn chuchu isteach gach oíche fhada gheimhridh. Dá bhrí sin, ar cuimhneamh dom ar an gcumha a bhí ortha nuair a dh'fhágas iad, do bheireas ar mo pheann agus do cheapas an leabhar so chun mo ghuth féin do chur ina gcluasa arís, an guth úd a bhíogadh suas i gcónaí iad. Is mian liom a chur in iúl díbh, a léitheoirí, go bhfuil buiochas amach óm chroí ag dul do Sheoirse Mac˙Tomáis, M. A., as ucht an leabhar do chur in eagar. Sea tá Trump sna meáin coitianta. Le déanaí bhí gioblachán aosta do chomhairleoir ag cur in úil do go raibh gabhar a dhéanamh do Mheiriceá ag Éire. Bhíos ag éisteacht le foinsí eagsúla ó Mheiriceá agus iad ag cáineadh Trump. Dar leo go raibh achrann tarraice aige ar an náisiún, go raibh cúlú ar chúrsaí eacnamaíochta á bharr, go raibh scata tíortha anois in aghaidh na Stáit Aontaithe, dar le dream amháin go raibh sé as a mheabhair agus dream eile go raibh sé cosúil le fear amú sa cheó.

Tá gach seans go mbuailfear Éire go trom ach i gcás fuiscí gach seans go bféadfaidh Éire áiteanna eile a aimsiú dá dtairgí éagsúla a bhíodh á n-easportáil go Meiriceá ach slán mar n-ínstear, beidh scata dá gcomhlachtaí tugtha abhaile acu. Níl le déanamh ach gan dada a cheannach uatha [Ó Trump rud a fhéadfadh an tAontas Eorpach a dhéanamh]. Más fíor tá mórán i Meiriceá ag éirí an- bhailithe do Trump. An ina thosach atá sé. Má éiríonn leis cuid do mhianraí saibhir na hÚcráin, fiu cuid acu a fháil thabharfadh sé na cosa leis ar feadh tamaill. Feirmeoirí

Tá titim beag le braith ar mhairt agus ar an gcaora. Gan dabht tá an aimsir réasúnta maith agus níor chuala aon rabach a bheith á dhéanamh ag an madra rua. Tá an chrothóig liath agus an faoileán ag faire ar rabach a dhéanamh. Tá sé beagán lua fós is dócha. Is beag fearthainne againne, aimsir bhreá, teas agus fuacht, agus beagán báistí. Is gnáthaí an Márta a bheith mallaithe gránna. Fonn ar dhaoine a bheith ag fanacht le soineann an Aibreáin. Fágaim féd thuairimíocht féin agus do thairingreacht é!
