BIA DINGLE. Great news recently reached the members of the Corca Dhuibhne Food Network ,who trade under the Bia Dingle title, that a grant of €40,000 has been sanctioned by the Department of Agriculture to held them establish a year round Food Market in Dingle.

A suitable location for this venture is now being researched which will have to include space for some form of permanent structure as well as market stall space and nearby parking for suppliers and customers. Another great addition and opportunity to display and support our local producers and keep the Shop Local Brand to the forefront on a more regular basis.

NEW YEARS EVE. Despite the inclement weather conditions a huge crowd turned up to witness the Annual Fireworks Display at the Pier which was also much appreciated by those present and the hundreds who watched from various vantage points around the area as well.

The voluntary collection total was much lower than previous years mainly as we did not have a facility for card donations available on site. A lesson for next years organisers to keep in mind.

We thank all who contributed and hope the Business Outlets Street Collection will help make up the shortfall as well as the already committed financial support from Kerry County Council.

The atmosphere around town at Midnight was once again electric with huge crowds gathering along Main Street to welcome in the New Year in a peaceful manner. I put a new title on the occasion as Dingle's New Year Umbrella Celebrations due to the unusual predominance of the multicoloured brollies up and down the street.

Fair Play to the members of the Sráid Eoin Wren who again rang in the New Year in the Marian Park area despite the weather conditions. THANKS. Our sincere thanks and appreciation to all the personnel involved with the emergency services, Gardaí, ESB staff, media staff, medical staff and County Council staff who worked round the clock in the recent difficult conditions to ensure the roads and heat and light services and necessary supplies were available to us all here in the Peninsula. Also to the proprietors and staff in the various shops and other services who kept the doors open and necessary services available when most needed.

BUSINESS. In one of our last editions of 2024 The Business Chamber appealed particularly to people in business in the area to come up with positive suggestions to be included for the Towns Plan for 2025 and beyond. As few such ideas have been received to date we again appeal for your views and input into how we should approach what many regard as tougher times ahead both nationally and internationally for all age groups.

The Blueprint for Wellness: How our Environment Shapes our Health

In a world where fad diets and fitness trends dominate the headlines and while Instagram influencers hawk miracle supplements promising overnight transformations we can easily overlook the profound impact our environment has on our overall health and well-being. Our environment is not just the hinterland in which we live but includes the spaces we occupy in our homes, workplaces and social lives. In the unprecedented era of modern living, human beings find themselves in environments that, for the first time in their existence, has significantly elevated the risk of chronic illnesses, obesity and premature death. It would be no harm for us to look to the healthiest populations in the world who took the slow train to the 21st Century, who make their own food every day and never go to the gym. These populations have mastered the art of living simply yet purposefully, where making healthy choices is not a conscious effort but a natural part of their daily lives. In examining these communities, it becomes evident that adapting elements of their diet and lifestyle could pave the way for a healthier future in the superdeveloped, modern societies.

Take, for instance, the residents of Okinawa, Japan, known for having one of the highest life expectancies in the world. Their secret doesn't lie in complicated diet plans or strenuous exercise routines, but rather in the simplicity and balance of their lifestyle. Okinawans have a cultural practice called "hara hachi bu," which translates to eating until you are 80% full. This mindful eating approach helps prevent overeating and contributes to their lower rates of obesity and related health issues.

Another exemplary community is the Mediterranean region, where the Mediterranean diet has gained international recognition for its health benefits. This diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and olive oil, is not just about the food but also the way of life. Regular physical activity, social connections, and a strong sense of community contribute to the overall well-being of the people in this region. The emphasis on fresh, locally sourced ingredients not only promotes good health but also benefits the environment and local economies.

One common thread among these healthy populations is that the healthy option is often the easiest option in their environments. Fresh, whole foods are readily available and accessible, while processed and unhealthy choices are limited. Traditional diets are centered around plant-based foods, lean proteins, and healthy fats, steering clear of the processed and sugar-laden foods that dominate many Western diets. Importantly, their lifestyle and work practices allow time and space to integrate good nutrition into their daily lives.

In contrast, Western societies are faced with environments that promote sedentary lifestyles and are saturated with highly processed, caloriedense foods. Fast food joints and convenience stores filled with sugary snacks are often more accessible than fresh produce markets. There was a time, not so long ago in evolutionary terms, that most of the day was centred around activities that garnered food for us. In contrast, we now have outsourced our nutrition for convenience and in doing so taken time away from making food that nourishes us and given that

time away to activities that are slowly killing us. This cannot end well! The prevalence of desk jobs and reliance on cars contribute to a lack of physical activity, resulting in rising rates of obesity, heart disease, and other lifestyle-related health issues.

So, what can we learn from these health-centric communities, and how can we apply their wisdom to our modern lives?

Firstly, incorporating more plant-based foods into our diets is a key step. Consider adopting the "Blue Zones" philosophy, where regions with the highest concentration of centenarians emphasize a predominantly plantbased diet. Fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains take centre stage, while meat and minimally processed foods play a supporting role. The Mediterranean diet, with its emphasis on olive oil, nuts, and fish, provides an excellent model for achieving a balanced and hearthealthy diet.

In addition to dietary changes, creating environments that encourage physical activity is crucial. Urban planning should prioritize walkability and the availability of green spaces. Communities that foster cycling, walking, or other forms of exercise as part of daily life are more likely to see improved health outcomes. Encouraging physical activity doesn't necessarily mean hitting the gym; it can be as simple as incorporating movement into our daily routines.

Social connections are another essential aspect of a healthy lifestyle. The emphasis on communal dining in many healthy societies fosters social bonds and reinforces the importance of shared meals. In contrast, the fast-paced, individualistic nature of Western societies often leads to isolated eating habits and gnaws away at the basic fabric of families and communities.

Moreover, re-evaluating our relationship with food and the pace at which we consume it is vital. All of ultra-processed foods are designed to be wolfed down without a thought. If we dare to stop and think about what we are eating, it is more likely that we would chalk it down as a bad idea. This is why food processing puts so much effort into the mouth feel, textures and flavour enhancement of its product. Real wholefood, on the other hand, requires time for preparation and cooking and time for eating and digestion. The practice of mindful eating, as observed in cultures like Okinawa, encourages savouring each bite and recognizing when we are satisfied. This approach helps prevent overeating and promotes a healthier relationship with food.

We can learn so much from the world’s healthiest populations to reshape our surroundings both inside and outside our homes. In doing so, it is possible to make the healthy choice the easier choice and take the hard work, time and effort out of trying to be well in a harmful, unnatural environment. Embracing a wholesome and mindful approach to food, moving more outdoors and prioritizing social connections are key steps towards a healthier future for Western societies. It's time to learn from the wisdom of these thriving communities and forge a path towards a more vibrant and resilient well-being.

Camp dominated the second half and their pressure finally paid off with a great through ball from Andrew Finn was finished to the net by James Crean. Superb performance from all the players. OBITUARY

Brendan Moynihan (Sheelin Road, Caherdavin, Limerick and Caherass Nursing Home). Late of Deelis, Camp passed away on January 3rd, peacefully at University Hospital Limerick. Son of the late Thomas and May. Predeceased by his brothers Michael, Paddy, John and Tom. Sympathy is extended to his brothers, Jim and Joe, his sister-in-law Sheila, nephews, nieces, extended family and friends. A lovely gentleman, Rest In Peace, Brendan. Brendan was laid to rest in Camp Cemetery on Monday following requiem Mass celebrated by Fr. Eamonn Mulvihill PP at St. Mary's Church Castlegregory.

The death has occurred of Maureen Daly, 49 Knockmoyle, Tralee and late of Islandboy, Mastergeehy, Cahersiveen, peacefully, on Saturday, 4th January in the care of the staff of Fatima Home, Tralee. We all have fond

memories of Maureen, when she resided in Upper Camp. Maureen was Fr. McMahon's housekeeper at the time, a lovely lady she was. RIP, Maureen! The death of John O'Mahony Farrantane, Castlegregory occurred on 4th January. John was a well known and highly respected Building Contractor in our area, for many years. A real gentleman, Rest In Peace, John. Sadly missed by his devoted family, loving wife Mary, daughters Geraldine, Joe Anne, Patricia & Siobhan, sons-in-law Cillian, Billy & Andrea, adored grandchildren Ciara, Dáire, Shane, Liam, Grace and James. He will be remembered by Pat, father to Shane. By his sister Theresa, brother in law Michael & Family. His sister Margaret, brother in law Peter & family. His extended family, kind neighbours and friends. Sympathy is extended to all.

KILGOBBIN CHURCH CHRISTMAS

Kilgobbin Church Christmas Ceremony shared by Pastor Willa - Francis of Assisi created the first creche in Greccio, Italy, on Christmas Eve 1223. He filled a stable with animals and people dressed as Mary, Joseph, shepherds, angels, and the Blessed Babe. Then he invited local people to witness the story of the birth of Jesus and attend the Christ’s Mass. And we have repeated that first display ever since. So the story came to life at Kilgobbin Church on Christmas Day. In place of live actors, we have statues of glass. We set them up on deep window sills, surrounded by holly, poinsettias, and little twinkle lights. Then young and old gathered, children, grandparents, the faithful congregation, visitors, and travelers from afar. We heard the story we repeat every year. O come, all ye faithful; Hark, the herald angels sing; Silent night—we sang the songs we sing every year.

Why does the story never wear out? On the eleventh day of Christmas, we baptized a twelve year old, one who wants to be part of this story, to carry it forward. The tree has come down, the candles blown out, the figures put away for another year. But yes, the story is carried forward, the story of Emmanuel, God with us.

Cask of Dynamite in Blazing Dingle Store

Kerry People 23 February 1907

The biggest fire that Dingle has experienced in recent years took place on Thursday morning in the large store at the rear of Messrs. Atkin’s and Co’s premises on Main Street. The fire was first reported at about 8 o’clock in the morning. By 9 o’clock the whole store, which is a couple of hundred feet long, was one mass of flames.

Luckily, there was just enough time to remove a cask of dynamite and several casks of petroleum from the store. Had the flames reached these it would have been impossible to quell the blaze. The store was built about five years ago and contained various other valuable items of stock.

These included a large quantity of hardware, over 150 tons of meal and about 100 tons of flour all of which was destroyed. The morning was calm but had there been a strong breeze the fire could have destroyed the west side of Main Street. It was still smouldering on Friday and no reason has been given for the outbreak.

Storm Damage

Tralee Chronicle 13 May 1870

Several casualties occurred in Dingle Harbour during the recent stormy weather.

The barque Sylphide, under Captain Thompson, from Civita-Vecchia, Italy, to Dingle with Indian corn for Mr. Latchford dragged her anchor and went ashore on the east side of the harbour.

She was got off, however, with only some damage to her copper. Three other vessels dragged their anchors and ended up ashore with some damage.

There were also some casualties on the Shannon. The smack Ellen, owned by Mr. John O’Shea of Blennerville, was bound from Scotland to Tralee with coal.

She slipped her anchor at Carrigaholt Bay and would have gone ashore were it not for the timely arrival of a steamer that took her in tow to Limerick where she now lies.

Rioter Shot and Police Injured in Ballyheigue

Belfast Morning News 21 May 1869

A large number of peasants came into the village of Ballyheigue to bid farewell to emigrants. They drank heavily during the day and argued among themselves in the evening. Three village policemen confronted them and, failing to quell the disturbance, arrested two men.

The prisoners were rescued by the crowd and the police were assaulted. Angered by this, the police made a determined effort to recapture their prisoners. The crowd became violent and pelted the police with stones and drove them back to their barracks. One policeman was prostrated by a severe headwound.

The police loaded their rifles and, under orders from Constable Hall, went in pursuit of the crowd. They were again pelted with stones but retaliated by opening fire. One man was shot in the right lung. His name was O’Hara, believed to be an Irish-American citizen and the ringleader.

The crowd dispersed at once and later that day it was reported that three men were in custody. One of them with a fractured shoulder and O’Hara mortally wounded. Two police were slightly hurt.

Daring Rescue from Gallows

There is a story of a most extraordinary escape not from Gaol but from the gallows at ‘Gallows Green’ in Tralee. In the late 18th century a woman was sentenced to be hung for stealing a flitch of bacon from a Tralee shop or household.

Great pity was felt for the condemned woman, but no reprieve or respite of sentence could be secured. She was led to the Green along the old road to Oak Park where a crowd gathered around her. As the noose was being place around her neck a gentleman of position and influence entered the Green on horseback.

He was the son of Pierce Chute and as he rode up he asked to speak to the Sheriff. The crowd parted to allow Mr. Chute to ride to the foot of the gallows. He had no sooner reached the gallows when he took the rope from the woman’s neck.

He lifted her to the front of his saddle before dashing headlong past the sheriff and his guards at a pace that defied pursuit. He probably took the road to Glin and Limerick. Nothing was seen or heard of the pair for a long time after that rescue. However, when young Chute returned to Kerry he was never called to account for his daring exploit.

Butter Fraudster Heading for Court

At the Butter Market today a man named Gorman from the Abbeydorney area of North Kerry was found to have offered for sale three casks of butter with substantial quantities of water enclosed in the casks.

The discovery was made by Constable Fennell.

He observed the water trickling from the casks. The three casks were bored and seven pounds of water flowed from one, five pounds from another and eleven pounds from a third. Gorman will be up before the Magistrates for the offence.

(No doubt this was at the Cork Butter Market at Shandon which attracted butter sellers from as far away as west Kerry).

Packed Programme Published By Kerry Archaeological & Historical Society

Almost thirty different events, lectures, outings and gatherings form part of the 2025 Programme for the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society.

From Ross Castle in the 15th century to Daniel O’Connell and Derrynane and outings to archaeological and historical sites of interest in Kilmalkedar and Knocknacuig, there is something for all interests. The programme is available to download from the Society website, www.kerryhistory.ie.

“The programme this year is again a varied and exciting one and highlights yet again the huge richness of the county’s archaeology, history and heritage. I would urge everyone to take a look at the programme which offers something for all interests,” said Society PRO, Owen O’Shea.

“We have outings to Derrynane, Ballyheigue, Cahersiveen and Killarney as well as a wide selection of lectures, the majority of which take place at the Kerry Library branches in Tralee and Killarney. There are bilingual and Irish language talks too including a presentation on An Turas Fada go Trá Banna. Some of the events are online and some are in-person,” he said.

Many of the events during the year are for members only but the majority of Society lectures and events are open to the public and are usually hosted in local libraries. Membership, at just €40 per person, allows access to all outings and talks as well as a copy of the annual Kerry Magazine and the Journal of the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society. Membership can be purchased online.

Other talks and topics this year include the legacy of the Civil War in north Kerry, pilgrimage in medieval Kerry, this history of salmon fishing in the Feale and the Cashen, and a roundtable discussion on local history journals and publications. Bia Dingle Successful For Governmental Short Supply Chains Funding

Corca Dhuibhne Food Network, Bia Dingle, were among the successful applicants announced by Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Senator Pippa Hackett in the recent call for innovative proposals to maximise the return to primary producers from short supply chains.

Bia Dingle’s proposed project involved the establishment of an all year round Bia Dingle Marketplace, a place for food stakeholders to convene, engage, learn and transact.

Speaking after news of the announcement, Bia Dingle’s Chairperson Trevis Gleason, said “Our initial primary focus will be on the establishment of a permanent local and sustainable food market. Followed by the creation of a learning and collaborative hub; with education around food and production, routes to market, diversification, selling, marketing, sustainability, social media, packaging etc”.

The forty thousand euro funding will be spread out over two years from January 2025 until December 2026. The group also have plans to introduce an events programme encouraging producer/consumer collaboration with pop up markets, meet and greets and guest speakers.

Speaking on Radio na Gaeltachta this week, Mai Bruic, Vice Chairperson of Bia Dingle said that this was a huge opportunity and huge recognition for the Corca Dhuibhne Food Network and the work that they wish to do for the local food community.

Embrace FARM ‘Wear our Wellies’ Day – Friday, January 31st @embracefarmsupport | #WOWEmbraceFARM

Embrace FARM, Ireland’s only support network for farm families, has announced the second annual Wear Our Wellies (WOW) Day will take place on Friday 31st January 2025. The unique fundraiser encourages businesses, groups, and individuals to wear their wellies wherever they are on the day and donate to Embrace FARM, helping to raise vital funds for the organisation.

Last year more than 60 fundraising events were held around the country and over €6,000 was raised to help Embrace FARM provide emotional and practical supports for Irish farm families impacted by serious injury and sudden death.

Speaking about the fundraiser, Embrace FARM Co-founder, Norma Rohan said: “We were blown away with the response to last year’s WOW Day which was an incredible success. This unique fundraiser allows us to connect with both farming and non-farming communities allowing us to highlight the impact a serious injury or sudden death has on a farming family and the broader community.. And best of all, it is also a bit of fun so get your gang together and join us as we wear our wellies on January 31st!”

Embrace FARM is a not-for-profit organisation founded in 2014 by husband and wife, Brian and Norma Rohan, following the tragic loss of Brian’s father Liam in a farming accident. From the first annual Remembrance Service in 2014, the network has expanded nationwide and evolved its services to meet the needs of Irish farm families in the aftermath of a serious injury and sudden death. Treatment Benefit Scheme

What is Treatment Benefit?

Treatment Benefit is a scheme run by the Department of Social Protection (DSP) to provide a limited financial contribution towards dental, optical and aural services. This scheme is available to insured workers, the self-employed and retired people who have the required number of PRSI contributions.

Under the Treatment Benefit Scheme, you may qualify for:

• Dental benefit

• Optical benefit

• Hearing aids

• Hair piece or wig

You should contact your treatment provider to check your eligibility before proceeding with any treatment.

If you choose to have treatment in another EU member state, the DSP will pay an amount equivalent to the rate paid for similar treatments carried out in Ireland or the amount actually paid for the treatment - whichever is the lower. You must still have the qualifying PRSI contributions.

You must contact the Treatment Benefit Section before you travel to get an application form and details of the amounts the DSP will pay. What is covered under Dental Benefit?

Under this scheme, the DSP pays the full cost of an oral examination once a calendar year.

A payment of €42 towards either a scale and polish or - if clinically necessary - periodontal treatment, is also available once a calendar year. If the cost of either cleaning or periodontal treatment is more than €42, you must pay the balance - capped at €15 for a scale and polish. There is no cap on the balance charged for periodontal treatment.

Treatment is provided by private dentists who are on the DSP's panel. Lists of dentists on the panel are available from the DSP. Most dentists are on the panel, so you should not have any difficulty finding one. The dentist will be able to check your eligibility and make a claim for you. The claim form will require details such as your Personal Public Service Number (PPS number), date of birth and signature. If you are a dependent spouse or civil partner, you should give the PPS number of the insured person, who will also be required to sign the claim form.

You may get tax relief on certain non-routine dental treatments. What is covered under Optical Benefit?

The Treatment Benefit Scheme entitles you to a free eyesight test, once every 2 years. However, sight tests for VDUs and driving licences are not covered under the scheme.

You can get a set payment, once every 2 years, towards either one pair each of reading and distance spectacles, one pair of bifocal or varifocals or one pair of contact lenses (including disposables). Cost will vary depending on the frames you choose. Basic frames are free. The examination is provided by opticians, optometrists or ophthalmologists who have a contract with the DSP. Does the Scheme cover medical lenses?

If you need contact lenses for medical reasons, you can get up to €1,000 towards the cost of a pair of medical contact lenses (€500 for each contact lens) once every 2 years. This applies to a small number of eye conditions that make wearing glasses impossible. You must have a doctor's recommendation. Contact lenses are not available on purely cosmetic grounds. Contact lenses for optical purposes are available through the Optical Benefit scheme above.

Are Hearing aids available through this scheme?

Hearing aids may be provided by suppliers who have a contract with the DSP. The DSP pays the full cost of a hearing aid up to a maximum of €500 (€1,000 for a pair) once every 4 years. It also pays the full cost of repairs to aids, up to a maximum of €100, once every 4 years.

How can I get a hairpiece or wig through this scheme?

From 28 May 2022, you can now get up to €500 for one hair replacement item such as a hairpiece or wig, in each calendar year. It does not cover surgical or topical treatments. Hair loss must be from a disease or treatment of a disease such as cancer or alopecia. The types of alopecia covered are:

• Alopecia areata (which includes alopecia totalis or universalis, diffuse alopecia areata, alopecia ophiasis)

• Primary scarring alopecias (cicatricial alopecias)

• Frontal fibrosing alopecia and lichen planopilaris (scarring alopecia)

• Chemotherapy induced alopecia (anagen effluvium)

• Alopecia resulting from surgery or trauma, including burns

You must buy the hair piece or wig from the Department's list of approved providers.

How do I qualify for Treatment Benefit?

You must have paid Class A, E, H, P or S social insurance contributions. The amount of social insurance you need depends on your age.

(1) Aged under 21

If you are aged under 21, you may qualify if you have paid at least 39 contributions at any time.

(2) Aged 21-28

Between these ages you may qualify if you have paid at least 39 contributions and at least 39 paid or credited in the governing contribution year (2023 is the governing contribution year for claims made in 2025) or have 26 paid contributions in each of the second and third last contribution years. For claims made in 2025, the second last contribution year is 2023 and the third last contribution year is 2022

(3) Aged 29-65

From the age of 29 onwards, you must have at least 260 paid contributions and at least 39 paid or credited contributions in the governing contribution year (2023 is the governing contribution year for claims made in 2025)

26 paid contributions in each of the second and third last contribution years. For claims made in 2025, the second last contribution year is 2023 and the third last contribution year is 2022.

(4) Aged 66 and over

There are special rules for people aged 66 and over. To qualify, you must have:

260 PRSI contributions paid at any time and 39 paid or credited contributions in the relevant tax year or the year immediately before it. The relevant tax year is the second last completed tax year before reaching 66 years of age. (For example, if you were 66 in 2021, the relevant tax year is 2019.)

There are, however, a number of exceptions to the above and you should contact your local Citizens Information Centre for more detailed information

If you satisfy the conditions for Treatment Benefit when you reach pension age, you will remain qualified for life.

If you qualify for benefit at age 60–65, you retain that entitlement

for life. If you have retired on grounds of ill health or you are considered to be unemployed, you can apply for Illness Benefit or Jobseeker's Benefit, subject to satisfying the statutory conditions. Your entitlement to these benefits may also lead to your being awarded credited contributions, which can be taken into account to extend coverage for treatment benefits for further periods.

Does a dependent spouse, civil partner or cohabitant have any entitlement to Treatment Benefit?

A spouse, civil partner or cohabitant may, of course, qualify in their own right if they have enough social insurance contributions. If your spouse, civil partner or cohabitant does not have enough social insurance contributions they may still qualify for Treatment Benefit on your social insurance record. To do this, you must qualify for Treatment Benefit and your spouse, civil partner or cohabitant must be dependent on you.

A dependent spouse, civil partner or cohabitant must:

• Have a gross income of €100 or less per week. If earning more than €100 per week, he/she must have been dependent on you before entering or resuming insurable employment (at Class A, E, H, P or S).

• Not be getting a social welfare payment (except Disablement Pension, Supplementary Welfare Allowance, Carer's Benefit or Child Benefit). If getting Carer's Allowance or State Pension (Non-Contributory), he/she can qualify if he/she was dependent on you immediately before getting the Allowance or Pension.

If an insured person dies and the dependent spouse or civil partner was entitled to benefit at the time of the death, they retain entitlement for as long as they remain widowed or a surviving civil partner. How do EU regulations apply to Treatment Benefit entitlement?

If you were previously insurably employed in a country covered by EU Regulations and you do not qualify on your Irish PRSI record, your social insurance record in the other EU country may be used to help you qualify for Treatment Benefit. You must have paid at least one reckonable PRSI contribution (Classes A, E, H, P and S) since your return to Ireland.

How to apply for Treatment Benefit?

Claims are made through your provider (dentist, dispensing optician/optometrist/ophthalmologist or audiologist), who can check your entitlement in advance of treatment and claim payment afterwards.

Your provider will require some information to identify you, such as your date of birth and PPS number. Prior to treatment, you will need to sign a Consent Form agreeing to your provider having this information and giving your consent to have this information supplied to the Department of Social Protection, to enable payment of your claim.

If you are claiming as a dependant under the PRSI record of your spouse, civil partner or cohabitant, both you and your spouse or partner will need to sign the Consent Form.

For treatment received in other EU member states, you contact the Treatment Benefit Section to confirm your eligibility. If eligible, you send your receipts to the Treatment Benefit Section along with a letter containing your contact information and details of your bank account (account name, number and sort code) into which payment will be made.

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.

SIGERSON CUP - We are all UL fans in Castlegregory this Spring as we have 2 club members playing with UL in the Sigerson (3rd Level College) Cup Competition. Last week saw Thomas O Donnell and Cian O Grady play their part in a Round 1 win over ATU Galway, 3-17 to 1-10. Next up a tricky fixture on Wednesday 17th away to Ulster University.

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

The 15th annual Inch Beach Christmas swim raised a whopping €3,500 for the Kerry Cancer Support Group. Thanks to Michelle & Joanne Long, and Margaret Foley for organising the fundraiser and to all those who swam and supported!

Inch Community Council are having their Annual General Meeting on Sunday 19th January at the coffee morning from 10.30am.

Following this, at 8pm on Tuesday 4th February, the Inch community will have to elect a new council. The council’s three-year term has come to an end. All current members must step down from the community council. They can be nominated again for the same role or a new role. Not all members are seeking to be re-elected so there will be positions available and these will be announced at the AGM. Inch Community Council is also a registered charity, so if you would like to serve your community and volunteer on a very hard-working committee, now’s your chance.

On this the 1st anniversary of James' passing his family wish to express our deepest appreciation and gratitude to all those who sympathized with us on our sad loss.

To all who called to our home and attended the wake, removal, funeral mass and burial. All those who travelled long distances to be with us, telephoned, sent mass cards, letters of sympathy, online condolences and floral tributes. A special thanks to Annascaul Health Centre and all the staff at University Hospital Kerry and the Palliative Care Unit.

Our sincere thanks to Fr. Eugene Kiely, Fr. Jim Sheehy, Fr. Michael Moynihan and Fr. Seamus McKenna (may his gentle soul rest in peace), who celebrated James' funeral mass and burial. Thanks to Cathy the sacristan, the choir and to O’Connors Undertakers and Funeral Home for their professionalism and kindness.

Ingredients

olive oil

2 chicken breasts, cut in half horizontally

1 onion, diced

3 cloves garlic, crushed

100g sun-dried tomatoes, diced bunch of thyme leaves bunch of oregano (dried will do if you can’t get fresh) 300ml heavy cream 150g parmesan, grated 200g spinach, washed salt and pepper

Method

Season the chicken well with salt and pepper. Put a pan on over medium heat, once hot add a little oil, add the chicken and allow it to brown on both sides. Transfer them to a plate, turn down the heat a little, add the onion and cook for a few minutes, add the garlic and sun-dried tomatoes and the herbs. Allow this to cook for 2-3 minutes. You can now add the cream and the cheese, allow this to heat to let the cheese melt, stir this well before returning the chicken. Bring this to a gentle simmer and cook for about 15 minutes, check the chicken to make sure it is cooked. Add the spinach, and let everything cook for a further 2-3 minutes. Season well with salt and pepper. Serve this with creamy mash or crusty bread.

On Sunday last we celebrated the baptism of Jesus, the great public beginning of his mission. We are encouraged to think of our own baptism which was the start of a journey in which we become members of the Christian community. We share in Christ's work of spreading the good news of the gospel. Baptism makes us sons and daughters of God by giving us an identity of belonging to his family, the church. Most of us have no recollection of the moment when, as infants, we were brought into church and carried to the font by our parents. On that occasion as the waters of baptism were poured over our head and we were anointed with the oil of chrism - a name was given to us, promises were made for us and our future was pledged to God. As we grow in faith, we are called to make our own those promises made on our behalf by becoming more aware of their implications. We are encouraged to be serious about our obligation to live by a Christian set of values in a world that does not accept them.

The way we live does make a difference. Each day presents us with opportunities for living our Christian faith. Opportunities to say yes to our baptism. Each time we reach out to help those in need we are saying yes. Each time we forgive, each time we give without counting the cost and each time we love the least deserving – we are saying yes.

Jesus is not asking great things of us. He wants us to quietly do the ordinary little things inspired by his love. Once we do this, he somehow takes over and all kinds of wonderful things begin to happen. The scope of our lives increases. We make the discovery that little things seem to be more important than they were before. We come to realise that there are people who need our help, who search for our guidance and who look for our love. Our baptismal calling teaches us not to be afraid to talk to them, to listen with understanding, to give them hope. Everyday, God comforts and heals the bodies and souls of his wounded people. The miracle is that through baptism God has chosen us to be his instrument of peace and hope; by standing up for what is just and fair, by reaching out to those in need. We are not called to save the world, or to solve all its problems. Each of us has our own unique call, in our families, in our work, in our world. Faithfulness to small everyday tasks is our way of responding to the problems of our time and of participating in the work of Jesus.

A Pilgrimage to Lourdes has been organised for the people of this area. It will take place from Sept 14th to 19th 2025, flying from Cork Airport. I am happy to be Spiritual director of the pilgrimage. The cost is €969pps. A deposit of €350 is asked for at the time of

booking. Booking forms are available at the back of the Churches and online at dingleparish.ie. Message from volunteers regarding who will benefit from our Crib donations this year. “Our names are Eimear O'Connor and Éimhín Dalby and we are 2 volunteers from Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne. In February we will travel to Nairobi with Cara Projects. This is a charity founded by Irish volunteers in 2008. It is based in Nairobi, Kenya. They focus in on supporting women and young girls in Kenya who may have been exposed to abuse, sexual assault and many other diseases such as HIV and rabies. We aim to help out in every way we can and do what we are able to do for the women and girls in the shelter. We greatly appreciate all donations made towards the charity and our trip, you can donate at the cribs in Lispole, Dingle and Ventry. Thank you,”

The Online Kerry Diocesan Mission will take place from Sunday January 19th until Wednesday January 22nd. The theme is Pilgrims of Hope. Speakers include Br Richard Hendrick, Caoimhe de Barra, David Wells and Martina Lehane Sheehan. February 2025 will see Walsh Whiskey from Carlow revisit the town for a tasting for the first time since 2019. Walsh have always been the very best of friends to our society, both in Dublin and especially here in Dingle and how many of us recall when Bernard Walsh himself laid on a bus to take us from Dingle to their new distillery at Royal Oak in Carlow and back again? The Irishman brand was launched back in 2007 and it and its sibling, Writers Tears have grown exponentially since those heady days.

Those were the days and a lot of water has passed under the bridge since then with lots of news for us to catch up with in the meantime. A new distillery in the wings, new management but the same friendly faces and new presentation & packaging for both the Writers Tears & Irishman ranges so it is with this in mind that we look forward to James Kilgannon bringing us up to date with all of their news and samples from their current range including their new limited edition Writers Tears/Dick Mack's Gruit stout collaboration. This tasting will, in fact, be the official launch of this whiskey although we here in Dingle have stolen a march on the rest of the world with this one.

The Narcotics Anonymous Message

An addict, any addict, can stop using drugs, lose the desire to use and find a new way to live.

Anyone who wants to stop using drugs may become a member of Narcotics Anonymous. Membership is not limited to addicts using any particular drug. Those who feel they may have a problem with drugs, legal or illegal, including alcohol, are welcome in NA. Recovery in NA focuses on the problem of addiction, not on any particular drug.

Our program of recovery begins with abstinence from all drugs, including alcohol. Sometimes people come to NA meetings while still using drugs, detoxing from drugs, or on drug replacement therapy. Regardless of what you may be taking when you first come to NA, you are welcome. NA’s primary approach to recovery is its belief in the therapeutic value of one addict helping another. Members take part in NA meetings by talking about their experiences and recovery from drug addiction. The NA programme is one of complete abstinence from all drugs, including alcohol.

Narcotics Anonymous is not a religious organization. It does teach basic spiritual principles such as honesty, open-mindedness, faith, willingness, and humility that may be applied in everyday life. Recovery in NA is a process, ongoing and personal. Members make an individual decision to join and recover at their own pace.

Our experience in NA is that those who keep coming to our meetings regularly stay clean.

Dingle Lit Short Story Competition

Submissions for the 2025 Dingle Lit Short Story Competition are currently open. The competition invites writers from across Ireland to submit original, unpublished work in both English and Irish. Open to all writers who are residents on the island of Ireland at the time of submission, the competition aims to discover new literary voices and celebrate the art of storytelling.

This year, John Patrick McHugh will judge the English-language entries. McHugh, the author of Pure Gold and the upcoming novel Fun and Games, is currently the fiction editor for Banshee Press. His work has appeared in The Stinging Fly, Winter Papers, Granta, and BBC Radio3.

Winners, runners-up, and highly commended stories will be published on the Dingle Lit Festival website and will also invited to the 2025 Dingle Lit Festival to read from their work, providing them with an invaluable opportunity to showcase their talent to a wider audience.

Festival Director, Hannah Bulger, said, “We are delighted to open submissions for the 2025 Dingle Lit Short Story Competition. Following last year’s success, we are excited to provide a platform for both emerging and established writers to share their work. We're thrilled to announce John Patrick McHugh and Éilís Ní Dhuibhne as this year's guest judges, and we are looking forward to this year’s entries."

Bláithín Mac Donnell, Creative Director, commented, “The Dingle Lit Short Story Competition is a celebration of the vibrant writing community in Ireland. We are delighted to offer a platform for writing in both Irish and English.”

Submissions are now open, and interested writers are encouraged to visit www.dinglelit.ie for full details and to submit their stories. The deadline for entries is midnight on the 28th February 2025.
