Something Wonderful to Sprout About
!Irene Flannery
Love them or hate them, Brussels sprouts stand out as one of the few foods capable of dividing a nation! It's rather curious how such strong sentiments surround this humble sprout, unlike the more neutral reactions we have towards peas, broccoli or carrots. Personally, I eagerly anticipate the return of Brussels Sprouts to the vegetable aisle every Winter, savouring their unique flavour and nutritional benefits. These miniature cabbages belong to the cruciferous family, which includes cabbage, kale, cauliflower, and broccoli, making them some of the most researched vegetables on the planet.
Brussels sprouts have an interesting back story. Originating in ancient Rome, they were later cultivated in the Belgian city of Brussels, from which they derived their name. Initially, they were a niche vegetable, gradually gaining popularity in the 16th century in the Low Countries. By the 19th century, brussels sprouts had firmly established themselves in European cuisine, finding their way into kitchens across the continent. It wasn't long before they made the transatlantic journey to the United States, where they gradually integrated into American diets. Today, Brussels sprouts have evolved from a niche vegetable to a globally recognized and, at times, polarizing culinary delight.
The plethora of studies on cruciferous vegetables, with a spotlight on brussels sprouts, underscores their remarkable anti-cancer properties. While most plant foods contribute something unique and wonderful to the body in terms of nutrition, cruciferous vegetables stand out for their broad spectrum of nutrients. These nutrients play a crucial role in supporting multiple body systems and, those involved in the onset of cancer.
Brussels sprouts, being the most potent among their cruciferous counterparts, have demonstrated significant risk reduction in most cancers but especially those affecting the bladder, colon, prostate, ovaries, and breast.
To truly harness the health benefits of cruciferous vegetables, including brussels sprouts, consider incorporating a cupful of them into your diet every day. This simple dietary adjustment could fortify your body against cancer by positively influencing inflammatory, immune, hormonal, detoxification, and antioxidant systems. It is no surprise that cruciferous vegetables present themselves in some shape or form in every season, such is their importance to our healthy existence throughout the whole year. Right now it’s the Sprouts’ time to shine, dig in!
Examining the nutritional profile of Brussels sprouts, unveils their nutritional prowess. Bursting with vitamin C, vitamin K, vitamin A, B1, B2, B6, potassium, fibre, omega-3, vitamin E, magnesium, calcium, and protein, these sprouts are a nutritional treasure trove. Furthermore, they contain glucosinolates, a lesser-known nutrient with significant anti-cancer properties. Glucosinolates breakdown to smaller metabolites which protect our cells from free radical damage. While present in varying degrees in other cruciferous foods, glucosinolates are notably absent from most other food groups, emphasizing the unique contribution of cruciferous vegetables to keeping us healthy and cancer-free.
Handling cruciferous vegetables with care during cooking is paramount to harnessing their super-powers. Over-cooking destroys the enzymes responsible for converting glucosinolates into their active anti-cancer forms. Opt for cooking times of less than 10 minutes, favouring steaming or quick stir-frying to retain maximum nutritional value. Cut into halves and steamed for five minutes can preserve both their goodness and your kitchen from the notorious sulphur smell associated with overcooked cruciferous vegetables.
For the most of us sprout-lovers, we need nothing more than a twist of black pepper and a tiny bit of butter to enjoy our sprouts. But to keep them interesting enough to eat more regularly and to get some of the sprout-avoiders in on the act, it may take some tasty pairings with herbs and spices. Here are some of my favourite sprout-combos for you to try:
Sesame Seeds and Scallions (green onions): Finish sautéed brussels sprouts with toasted sesame seeds and sliced green onions for a delightful crunch and mild onion flavour.
Smoked Paprika and Lemon Zest: Roast brussels sprouts with a sprinkle of smoked paprika and finish with lemon zest for a smoky, citrusy flavour combination.
Lemon and Rosemary: Add brightness to roasted brussels sprouts with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and a sprinkle of chopped rosemary for a refreshing kick.
Soy Sauce and Ginger: Stir-fry brussels sprouts with soy sauce, ginger, and a touch of sesame oil for an Asian-inspired flavour profile.
Maple Syrup and Cinnamon: Roast brussels sprouts with a drizzle of maple syrup and a dash of cinnamon for a hint of sweetness and warmth.
In a world where cancer affects a significant portion of the population, it's vital to take our diets seriously. Alarming statistics predict that one in every three individuals will face cancer at some point in their lives. These numbers serve as a compelling reminder to be proactive in our food choices. Embrace cruciferous vegetables as a staple in your diet, ensuring your body doesn't miss out on the powerful and extensively researched cancer-preventing benefits that Mother Nature has provided. So, whether you're savouring the historical journey of brussels sprouts or simply relishing their unique flavour, these tiny green orbs have certainly earned their place on our plates and in our hearts and not just for Christmas, Enjoy!

Murder or Manslaughter
-Shields Daily Gazette, 01 December, 1879
An inquest was held on Saturday in Kerry County on the remains of Myles Brennan. He was the bailiff who was killed by a stone thrown by Mrs. Shea, the wife of a farmer on whom the deceased was serving a process. The jury found that the deceased was killed by a stone thrown by the accused but could not decide on whether murder or manslaughter had been committed. The woman was sent for trial.

Storms and wrecks
-Tralee Chronicle, 10 December, 1858
All along the western and southern coasts of Dingle, large quantities of wreck timber continue to float in. The greatest portions of this scattered wreck are picked up at Beenbawn, Kinard, the Short Strand, Ballydavid and Ferriter’s Cove.
Some of the wood displays highly ornamental timber work which is beautifully gilded. It is feared that terrible disasters have occurred off the coast during the recent storms.
There are two Welsh schooners now in Dingle, laden with corn, sheltering from the weather. The brig Alabama of Gloucester, bound from Galway to Cardiff with a cargo of pitwood also came in for shelter. She was 21 days at sea, had lost some of her bulwarks, stanchions, her galley and sails. During a gale last week the brigantine Argonaut broke from her moorings at the pier in Dingle and was driven ashore at the wall which bounds the road. Every assistance was given by our fishermen in saving her from being dashed to pieces.
The schooner Emna of Plymouth was driven into Smerwick Harbour. The crew said they met with the Bombay in the far west and that her main mast and mizzen were gone and she was seriously disabled. They said her deck was crowded with passengers.
Stole from jail
-Cork Examiner, 04 January, 1868
Ellen Griffin, an old offender, was charged with stealing a quantity of tobacco from the premises of Patrick Stokes, Tralee, on the 11th of December last. She pleaded guilty.
She was also charged with stealing a sheet in the County Gaol since her arrest and she also pleaded guilty to that charge. However, she explained she only took the sheet to cover herself while she was washing an under garment. She was sentenced to six month in prison with a caution.
Child Sentenced.
At the same court a child named Julia Ryan was charged with the theft of a Whitney coat, the property of Mr. William Quill. She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to be detained in St. Joseph’s reformatory, Limerick, for a period of five years.
Murder Suspects Arrested
-Eastern morning News, 15 December, 1885
On Sunday night Jeremiah Connor and John Sullivan, labourers who live near Killarney, were arrested in a public-house in Tralee. They are suspects in the murder of caretaker Rahilly at Killarney yesterday. Sullivan, when arrested, had a cut on his cheek and bloodstains on his clothing.
14 Drowned in Ballybunion
-Birmingham Daily Post, 13 December, 1886
A telegram from Listowel states that it is reported there that a brig has foundered at Ballybunion and that fifteen of the crew were drowned. A later telegram says that thirteen bodies have been washed ashore.
Attempted Double Murder
-Drogheda Conservative, 17 December, 1887
A schoolmaster named John Curtin, when going to Mass in Brosna, County Kerry, in a horse and cart with his wife and children on Sunday was fired at by three men in ambush. His wife was severely wounded and he was slightly wounded. The assailants decamped towards the hills. Mr. Curtin was respected in his area but his school was boycotted recently.
Woman Almost Drowns in her Cabin
-Cork Examiner, 12 December, 1864
The wife of a poor labourer named Slattery, who was prostrated on her bed with fever, was almost drowned in her cabin in floodwater. Fortunately she was rescued but a few moments longer and she would have perished. She was sent to the hospital in Listowel that day.
The only animal that she owned was a pig that was drowned in the cabin when the water rose almost to the roof.
A workman residing in Ratoo Marsh, with his wife and several small children also had a narrow escape from flooding. Nobody in Ballyconry, near Ballyduff, can recall ever seeing places in that townland underwater. The loss of crops is very great.
The loss sustained in turf is also very serious. Whole ricks which were removed out of the bog and stored up in elevated places of fancied security, where former floods never touched, have been totally swept away. Those left in the bog are also gone, not a vestige of them remains.
The potato crops were pitted close to the houses and in some cases in the houses and now are all gone. The full scale of the flood will become clear when the waters recede.
Outrage in Beaufort
-Kerry Reporter, 15 December, 1888
On Friday night last a party of 20 men attacked the home of John Connor, Beaufort, which included the firing of several shots into it. The reason for the outrage is unknown as of yet. Connor is in the best of terms with his neighbours.
It is suspected that it was done for the purpose of intimidation. Five men from the Beaufort area were arrested and charged with the outrage and remanded in custody for a week. Further arrests are expected.

How Cancer Saved My Life
Ted Creedon
That’s quite an interesting and thought-provoking headline but can it be proved? Absolutely, and it will be of interest to readers, both men and women but especially middle-aged and older men. There are two parts to this article which is based on recent personal experience. In 2021, after several blood tests I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Some people say that ‘if you’re going to get cancer then prostate is the best one to get’. There’s a touch of dark humour about that but it probably means that treatment of prostate cancer is largely successful these days.
The news was given to me in Dingle Hospital by Dr. Tom McCormack of Tralee on December 16 that year, just over a week before Christmas. It wasn’t unexpected and I told no one until after the New Year celebrations.
The serious side began in February 2022 with a succession of visits to the Mercy University Hospital in Cork over a period of two months. That involved a series of consultations, scans and invasive probing. The overall results of these were presented by one of the hospital doctors. She confirmed the presence of prostate cancer but also mentioned the finding of ‘a possibly more serious problem’ which she called an aneurysm. This had been revealed during an ultrasound scan. However, my more immediate concerns were about the cancer and I had never heard of an aneurysm.
There followed two months of radiotherapy for the cancer, five days a week daily attendance, in Cork University Hospital in the autumn of 2022. Patients were given every care, enjoying snacks and lunches at no cost in a setting reminiscent of a luxury hotel reception area. Today - the most recent blood tests show the cancer to be immeasurable - virtually gone.
So, back to the aneurysm. What is it and why is it serious? The full name of this condition, in my case, was abdominal aortic aneurysm or triple A.
The following is an excerpt from a Mercy University Hospital pamphlet; ‘an aneurysm occurs when the wall of the blood vessel becomes weakened and as a result, the vessel enlarges. This makes the wall weaken further and more likely to rupture’.
This condition could be a silent killer because ‘you may not be aware of its presence until it is discovered incidentally’. That’s exactly what happened in my case – it was discovered during an ultrasound scan, as stated above. If an aneurysm bursts the chances of survival are limited but it can be repaired.
So, I had an operation at the end of September this year. The aneurysm was repaired by Professor Gerald McGreal (His mother, Kathleen Fitzgerald, was from Lispole) and his team over a four-hour period in the Mercy Hospital.
However, if it wasn’t for the cancer this life-threatening condition would probably have remained undetected and may have resulted in sudden death– hence the headline.
The reason for writing this piece is because it might help to save a life. It may help to bring home to people of middle-age and older the importance of regular blood tests – at least once a year. Also, it might be prudent to have an ultrasound scan – talk to your doctor.

Ar nóta gaolmhar, gan a bheith cáinteach, ní thuigim canathaobh nach gcinntíonn lucht bainistíochta na bhfoirne go gcaitheann imreoirí na huimhreacha de réir mar a fhógraítear iad ar Chlár Oifigiuil an Chluiche. Dá thoradh bíonn mearathal agus frustrachas nach beag ar sheanóir mar me féin a d’iarraidh glúin óg imreoirí a dh’aithint ar an ngort. Péint agus prosecco
Bhí tráthnóna álainn againn Dé Sathairn ag an Péint agus Prosecco i dTigh Kruger le hÁine Uí Dhúbhshláine. Bhaineamar an oiread san sult as a bheith mar ealaíontóirí don oíche agus an t-ádh linn a bheith le healaíontóir chomh cumasach a thug stiúr agus misneach do gach éinne. Cauliflower Soup with Chorizo
Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School
This Cauliflower and Chorizo Soup is the perfect combination of warmth and flavour for the colder months. Cauliflower, a versatile winter vegetable, creates a beautifully smooth texture when blended. The chorizo, with its paprika-infused richness, brings a smoky warmth to the dish and provides a deliciously crispy topping that contrasts perfectly with the velvety base. This recipe is perfect for a cosy midweek supper or as a starter for a festive gathering. Whether you’re looking to spice up your soup repertoire or simply want a new way to enjoy seasonal cauliflower, this recipe is guaranteed to become a firm favourite!
Ingredients
2 heads cauliflower
50g butter
600ml chicken stock
600ml milk
bunch of thyme
1 bay leaf
100g spicy chorizo, diced
1 handful flat leaf parsley, chopped
salt and pepper
oil
Method
Break the cauliflower into florets. Put a medium- large pot on over a medium to high heat. Add a little butter and add the cauliflower. Cook this for about 8 minutes, allow this to soften but not take on any colour. Heat the stock, milk, thyme and bay leaf in a separate pan and add to the cauliflower. Bring to the boil and simmer for 5-7 minutes, this will allow the herbs to infuse, add this to the pot with the cauliflower. Cook this slowly for about 15-20 minutes. Once everything has softened, remove the herbs and use a blender to bring the soup a nice velvety puree texture.
For the garnish, Heat a sturdy frying pan over a medium heat and gently fry the chorizo until crisp. Stir in the chopped parsley. Pour the soup into bowls, sprinkle with the chorizo and drizzle over a little oil from the pan to finish.

International Regenerative Tourism Conference in Dingel Skellig Hotel
What a great few days at the International Regenerative Tourism Conference which was held in the Dingel Skellig Hotel. 5 countries were represented on the project coming from Iceland, Finland, Netherlands, Poland as well as Ireland and a total of 80 SME's participated.
I had the honour of addressing delegates and giving the closing speech at the Conference Dinner. Tourism is an important economic sector for Kerry, supporting an estimated 1 in 5 jobs. At the same time, climate change is a key social, economic and environmental challenge of our time. There is a need for strong thinking and action in the development of sustainable tourism. The Council has identified the Dingle Peninsula as a Decarbonisation zone.
Well done to all those who attended and supported. Especially Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance (DPTA) and the Munster Technological University (MTU) for organising.

Film Review: Gladiator II
Tom Ó Neachtain
After years of false-starts and many proposed scripts, Gladiator II has finally reached cinemas, with Ridley Scott returning as director and Paul Mescal in the lead role. Mescal plays Lucius, a royal of Rome who was exiled to Africa for his own protection as a child. Years later, he is captured by the Roman Army and brought back to Rome to fight in the Colosseum. Looking back, Gladiator was not a film that lent itself well to a sequel. The story of Maximus Decimus Meridius that we see in the original film has a very clear-cut beginning, middle and end. All of the plotlines are wrapped-up quite definitively by the time we see Russell Crowe walking through that field. However, it is a true classic, with the perfect combination of Scott’s muscular direction, a well-constructed story and Crowe’s magnetism making sure that it has never left the public-consciousness in the 24 years since release. Making a good sequel would be no easy feat. Making a sequel on-par with the original would be an
incredible achievement. Sadly, Scott and screenwriter David Scarpa have failed to do either.
This film’s problems generally boil down to weak characterisation and poor pacing. This is Mescal’s entry into blockbuster film-making, and though he has proven his immense talent in other projects, he’s surprisingly wooden here. He spends the film either silently brooding or angrily shouting and neither are especially engaging, and he wears a permanent scowl throughout the film that makes it hard to take his character seriously. In all fairness however, the weak script gives the cast very little to work with. The story doesn’t strike a balance between action-sequences and fleshing-out its huge cast of characters, and as a result, most of the characters are nothing more than simplistic archetypes. The story simply has too many pointless sub-plots and side-characters that amount to nothing, a far-cry from the tight scripting of the original. On the other hand, the film deserves credit for some impressively staged gladiatorfights. Mescal and the rest of the cast do the great fight-choreography justice, and the film offers a nice variety of confrontations in the arena (scrapes with killer monkeys, gladiators riding rhinos, and indoor boat battles). Even then, the film’s overly-quick pace means that all of these sequences end before they really get going. The original Gladiator perfectly balanced its character moments with action, which is one of the main reasons it has remained relevant for 24 years. Gladiator 2 fails to wrangle its unwieldy story into an engaging narrative, or create characters that leave any impression. It will be surprising if it’s still talked-about in 24 days.

And what about the future?
Don’t get me started! But I’ll be out in a minute Or two

Solar Systems
Tom Kennedy
Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.
Whist: Every Thursday evening in the Clubrooms from 8pm. Newcomers and Learners welcome.
Results:
A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine. There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.
27/11/24: Ladies: 1st Sandra Hoffman 2nd Gerry Curran Intervals: Liz Higgins,Anne Kavanagh Gents: 1st Mairead Ni Dubhda 2nd Mary Connolly-Kenny Intervals:Martin Murphy, Brid Baker Mystery: John Sayers
Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

WE ALSO SUPPLY & INSTALL THE FOLLOWING:
Get your heating system up to date Extra Grants available from SEAI & Electric Ireland Does your Oil/Gas Boiler need servicing Reg. Gas installer
Get your heating system into shape and improve efficiency
28/11/24 Ladies: 1st Joan Moriarty, Catherine Lyons 2nd: Intervals: Mary Mckenna, Pam Mc-
A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

`Os cionn céad bliain ó céadfhoilsíodh Jimín Mháire Thaidhg, tugann an t-eagrán maisithe seo léargas úr ar an leabhar is aitheanta i gcorpas litríocht Ghaeilge na n-óg. Leagan glanta agus giorraithe de Jimín Mháire Thaidhg a léigh glúine de pháistí scoile Éireannacha, ar baineadh tagairtí don chleamhnas, do chaidrimh idir dhaoine fásta agus don bhás amach as. Tréis fhotharga an toghcháin, tháinig lá breá ar an Luan. Níl aon sport a sharódh lá stocaireacht vótaí. Ní déarfad faic fé Chiarraí, bhíodar anmhacánta agus tuiscionach.
Bhí theip ar An Monk fear, dála an scéil, a eagraíonn cluichí don óige agus a bhíonn bainteach le saol lár Bhleá Cliath. Gan dabht tá scata daoine ná tabharfadh dada dhó de bharr an saol a chaith sé go dtí le déanai. Fágaimís é, mar scéal.
Rud a thugas fé ndeara an slí a ionsaigh iriseoirí áirithe iarrthóirí. Bíonn cuid acu droch bhéasach agus leath-chosach, ach scata acu go maith.
Dúirt fear amháin ná raibh ar m’aithne go raibh iarratas curtha isteach aige fé dhó, diúltaíodh é mar go ndúradar leis go raibh sé ró dhéanach an dá bhabhta. Bhí an gumh dearg air. Ba chosúil ná raibh mórán le déanamh aige, ach thug sé fé thalamh é do Pháirtí áirithe. Bhaineas an- shásamh as an stocaireacht, agus mo chéad míle buíochas libh go léir a chabhraidh. Mo ghraidhn bhfúr gcroí. Ó Thuaidh.
Aimsir
Tá ag éirí go maith linn ó thaobh aimsire sa chuínne seo againne. Ní tháinig aon ghála díobháileach ná aon tuile máchaileach agus le cúnamh Dé ní gheobhaidh aon cheann don dá cheann chughainn. Mar a duirt Father Tom liom agus mé óg ‘sure, níl aon pheaca mór ar éinne as seo go dtí an gCam.’ Ba mhaith é Fr. Tom.
Is beag feirmeoir go bhfuil stoc nó caoire aige/aici ná beidh an- shásta leo fein. Ta anpraghas ar uain, caoire agus méith mhairt. Is maith san.
