Ireland’s Enduring Love Affair with the Humble Spud

From the outside, our love for potatoes might seem questionable and even misplaced, considering the heartache and devastation we historically share. Yet, like all great romances, ours is one of twists and turns, resilience and unwavering loyalty. Almost six hundred years after its introduction to Ireland, the potato remains inextricably linked to our culture, cuisine and even our identity.

In his landmark 1949 work, The History and Social Influence of the Potato, British botanist and potato breeder Redcliffe Nathan Salaman detailed the remarkable impact of the potato on the countries and people that embraced it. He noted that "in no other country can potato’s influence on the domestic and economic life of the people be studied to greater advantage" than in Ireland. And he was right.

The Rise of the Irish Potato

Prior to the Great Famine of 1845, Ireland’s relationship with the potato flourished. Rejected initially by the British Empire as bitter and of the “devil’s realm,” the humble spud quickly established itself as Ireland’s staple food. The average Irish person consumed between three and six kilos of potatoes per day! It is said that such an appetite contributed to a doubling of the Irish population from four million to eight million between 1780 and 1840. Compared to their rural English counterparts, who relied heavily on bread, the Irish were notably healthier, taller and physically stronger. Infant mortality rates declined and the population thrived on the strength of them—until the blight changed everything.

Unlike the British, who struggled to make the potato palatable, the Irish quickly discovered that cooking made them more digestible and their ease of cultivation made them an ideal staple. Even Irish folk medicine included the potato in some (questionable) healing practices. Raw, sliced potato was used to soothe bruises and stop bleeding, frostbite was treated with potato compresses and carrying a spud in your pocket was believed to ward off toothaches. The most amusing remedy involved tying a cooked potato in a stocking around one’s neck to ease a sore throat—perhaps the placebo effect at work!

Our deep dependence on the potato ultimately proved catastrophic when blight wiped out entire crops, leading to the devastating famine of 18451860. Yet, despite the trauma, the Irish never truly abandoned the potato. It remained a crucial food source for generations and its value in Irish cuisine never wavered. Today, the spud continues to feature in everything from boxty and colcannon to champ and, of course, the beloved mashed potato—sometimes amusingly referred to as "Irish guacamole."

A Nutritional Powerhouse

Despite modern trends that vilify potatoes as "fattening" or an unhealthy carbohydrate, science tells a different story. Potatoes are an incredibly

nutrient-dense food, providing complex carbohydrates, fibre, protein and an impressive range of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, potassium, vitamin B6, iron, and magnesium. They are naturally low in calories and sodium, making them a valuable part of a balanced diet— provided they aren’t drowned in butter or deep-fried beyond recognition! What many don’t realize is that potatoes contain resistant starch, a type of fibre that feeds beneficial gut bacteria and helps regulate blood sugar. This effect is particularly strong in cooled, cooked potatoes, such as in a potato salad, making them a surprising ally for metabolic health.

Let’s set the record straight on some common potato myths:

• "Potatoes are bad for blood sugar." While refined carbohydrates like white bread can cause sharp blood sugar spikes, boiled potatoes have a relatively moderate glycemic impact, especially when consumed with their skin, which adds extra fibre.

• "Potatoes make you gain weight." In reality, potatoes are among the most satiating foods, meaning they keep you fuller for longer and can help prevent overeating. The problem isn’t the potato itself—it’s how we prepare it. A plain boiled potato has fewer calories than the same weight of pasta or rice.

• "Sweet potatoes are healthier than white potatoes." While sweet potatoes contain more beta-carotene, white potatoes have more potassium and protein. Nutritionally, they each have unique benefits, but neither is inherently superior.

Populations known for their longevity, like Okinawans in Japan and Sardinians, often include potatoes as a staple. Genetics and lifestyle play a role, but evidence suggests that carbohydrate-rich, whole food diets, such as those including potatoes, support long-term health and vitality. In fact, historical accounts suggest that Irish peasants who ate mostly potatoes with a little milk and fish lived remarkably long lives, free from many of the chronic diseases that plague modern society. The potato was a peasant's superfood—rich in essential nutrients and sustaining entire communities for generations.

Despite their health benefits, potatoes have fallen out of favour in modern Ireland. Consumption has declined in recent years as low-carb diets and food trends demonize the humble spud. Ironically, a similar movement existed in the 1800s, when a British activist group called The Society for the Prevention of an Unwholesome Diet (SPUD, for short) sought to discourage potato consumption. Some believe this is the origin of the word "spud" as a nickname for potatoes. Like today’s food fads, their campaign was largely unscientific and politically motivated.

Yet, despite centuries of controversy, the potato remains deeply woven into Ireland’s culinary and cultural fabric. Gardeners and farmers are busy digging the earlies, and with the luck of the Irish, the main crop will be bountiful and plenty. Our love story with the potato may not be as racy as Fifty Shades of Grey, but it’s certainly more nourishing. In a world of ever-changing food trends, the spud is here to stay—so pass the butter, André, and let’s raise a fork to Ireland’s most steadfast companion!

Once Upon a Time in the Southwest

Murder of a Child

-Kerry Evening Post 03 April 1872

An inquest was held on Saturday at Blennerville, Tralee, on the body of the unfortunate child that was discovered at Anna (Annagh) the day before. The facts of the case, having been given in evidence, the child’s mother, , the putative (supposed) father and Janother were all committed for trial under the coroner’s warrant.

Four Fishermen Drowned

-Limerick Reporter 05 December 1848

On Wednesday last a canoe was upset in Dingle Bay where the crew, consisting of four, met with a watery grave. There was a tremendous surf on the beach and no possibility of their being able to save themselves. The names of those lost are John Keane, single; Daniel Rourke, married; John Callaghan, single and Michael Kennedy, married. This was a terrible tragedy not only for the men but for Mrs. Kennedy also.

She lost her first husband and her eldest son around June 1846. They were drowned near the coast-guard watch-house. Her father was also drowned some years ago.

New Winch for Ballydavid Slip

-Board of Works Letter Books 16 November 1870

‘Sir, I return the papers referred in your letter of 21st ult with the exception of J. Goggin’s offer of the crab winch for £11-18-6. Although the slipway is not unusually steep the winch will be useful when there is a scarcity of hands at the Coastguard Station and it has therefore been ordered.’

New Bank for Dingle

-Southern Reporter and Cork Commercial Courier 24 May 1870

A PERMANENT Branch of the National Bank has been opened in Dingle.

No Fire Engine in Dingle

-Tralee Chronicle 14 June 1870 (Anonymous writer)

Fires are very rare in Dingle but this is no argument against purchasing a Fire Engine for nobody can tell when a fire may occur. Should any of the town’s large houses catch fire a whole side of street may be destroyed in a short time.

Another reason why the town should have the means of extinguishing fires is that very few houses are insured. Now – what I would suggest is, we now have a new bank and a Town Clerk, so the next thing we have to secure for Dingle is a Fire Engine.

This can be purchased for £150 or £200, a large sum to collect but I feel sure that with the liberal aid of our chief proprietors the amount would soon be collected.

Once obtained the Fire Engine could be placed in the hands of the police or the coast guards who should be trained on how to use it. They should also be provided with water buckets.

Death at Killarney Cathedral

-Kerry Evening Post 17 April 1909

Last Thursday evening Michael Fraher, a native of Clonmel and a labourer on Killarney Cathedral, was engaged in bracing scaffolding in relation to the extension of the Cathedral.

He was accidentally killed while engaged in that work while Patrick Looney, of Killarney, was seriously injured. It appears that a number of men were working on the scaffolding when the ledger gave way.

A lot of heavy stones on the scaffolding fell to the ground where the unfortunate men were working. It appears that a large stone had fallen on

Mr. Fraher’s head killing him instantly. He was 25 years of age.

(Ledger – tubing to support the floor of the scaffolding)

Farmer Shot in Kerry

-Belfast Weekly Telegraph 26 July 1884

About ten o’clock last Saturday night a desperate outrage was committed at Curraghmore, about six miles from Tralee. The house of a farmer named Peter Breen was entered by three men who accused him of putting a cow to graze on an evicted farm.

One of the men gave the command, “Number 21, fire!” and a shot was fired into the man’s thigh, inflicting a deep, lacerated wound. The police and a doctor were summoned to the house. No arrests have been made so far as Breen is unable to identify his assailants.

Boxing and Football

-Kerry Reporter 17 July 1909

A boxing match was held in Dingle on Saturday and some local amateurs entertained a very large audience. Sapper Grant gave a very fine exhibition of the fistic art.

(Sapper Grant was probably an engineer in the British army or may have worked on Ordnance Surveys or both. There wasn’t any OS survey work in West Kerry at that time.)

Football

On Sunday next, in the Sports Field the Dingle and Tralee teams will meet to decide the Championship of the County for 1908. The contest will probably be one of the finest inter-club matches ever witnessed in Kerry. The match will start promptly at 3 p.m. Admission to the field will be 6 pence.

New Pub License Application

Dingle Whiskey Tasting

Peter White

April 4 will see old friends traverse our country from the farm distillery at Echlinville on the Ards peninsula in Down and return to the Dingle peninsula. As we all know, Echlinville have revived the Dunville's brand and are producing some amazing whiskey on the opposite side of the country. Indeed, Dunville's has won the vast majority of awards in the Irish Whiskey Awards over the past 2 years, in addition to all of the awards that they have won elsewhere. Their whiskey has attained legendary status in a very short period of time and this tasting is always a favourite here.

Echlinville distillery became Northern Ireland's first licenced distillery in over 125 years distilling its first spirit in 2013 and Seamus Og Birt will bring along some excellent whiskeys to sample together with some cask samples and perhaps some new make spirit. Echlinville distillery is a truly unique operation as they grow and malt their own barley in the fields surrounding the distillery and they have also revived the age old tradition of distillery floor malting. These are actual 'field to fork' production methods in the truest sense of the expression and the new distillery itself is a sight to behold.

The ethos of 'We will not compromise in our desire to produce the finest whiskey conceivable. We will give it authenticity and provenance and it will tell the story of the land from which it originates, and of those who brought it to life,' will be borne out in the evening's presentation.'

Musical Instruments Strike a Chord in Kerry!

In 2023, the Library Services, Environment Office, Arts Office, and Integration Department of Kerry County Council, along with Music Generation Kerry, invited anyone who was considering donating unused musical instruments to do so through their local library. That call was met with great generosity from the people of Kerry, and Kerry Library continue to welcome dusty keyboards, long-forgotten guitars, violins, and even an electric organ!

If you would like to contribute to this worthy project, check your attics and sheds for unused instruments and bring them to your local library. Music Generation Kerry evaluates all donated instruments and compiles a comprehensive catalogue. Through this initiative, these instruments are made available for borrowing to all residents of Kerry.

Deirdre Johnson, Music Generation Kerry Coordinator, describes the importance of the project as: "The Musical Instruments Project is a powerful initiative that gives people the opportunity to borrow instruments from their local library, just like they would a book. This access to music opens doors to creativity, skill-building and performance, helping to boost confidence and self-expression. When everyone has the chance to learn and play music, they gain more than just a new skill - they gain a sense of pride, accomplishment and well-being."

A parent of an aspiring banjo player highlighted how the project empowers young people to build confidence and a sense of achievement without the burden of cost:

"Without a donated instrument my son would not have been able to learn how to play a new and unfamiliar instrument. As a parent, I would not have been able to invest in a new instrument until I knew whether or not my son enjoyed even playing this new instrument. With the instrument donation, my son has thrived and really enjoyed learning the banjo. Additionally, the commitment from Music Generation to source quality instruments and offer them to students is a superior opportunity and I am so grateful for the Music Generation programme's investment in my child."

Libraries have always been places of discovery. The Musical Instruments Project complements Kerry Library's mission of providing accessible resources to the local community.

To avail of or contribute to the project, please visit your local library. Donations will be accepted at any of the nine Kerry libraries.

Details of all library services, including opening hours, are available at www.kerrylibrary.ie.

Annascaul Take League Title

There were scenes of great jubilation in Páirc an Ághasaigh on Sunday when Annascaul edged out Dingle in a tightly contested Lee Strand West Kerry League final with a point in the last seconds of the game. Playing with a strong wind Annascaul led by 5 points to 2 in the first quarter. By half time it it was 7pts to 3. Dingle, playing with the wind in the second half gradually cut into Annascaul's lead. By the 50th minute it was 9pts to 7. Playing against the wind Annascaul were now finding it hard to penetrate Dingle's defence but nevertheless were holding on to a narrow lead.A dramatic finale was in prospect when Dingle levelled at 9pts each at the end of normal time. It was well into injury time when Annascaul won a free about 25 yards out close to sideline and against the

wind. This was a real pressure kick and Jason Hickson drawing on all his experience nailed it. There was only time for the kick out and the referee blew and Annascaul had won.

This game could have gone either way as there was little between the two teams. A strong wind made life difficult for all. A feature of the game was some fine high fielding by both sides at midfield. What the game lacked in scores it made up for in tension and high drama particularly in the closing stages. It was no place for the faint hearted.

Final score Annascaul 10 points Dingle 9pts. Annascaul captain Gearóid Lyne accepted the cup and James Ashe won the man of the match award. - Michael Kennedy

Base Dingle hosted a truly inspiring and impactful event in celebration of International Women's Day, bringing together an incredible group of women entrepreneurs, business leaders, and community members. This free event attracted a diverse audience, all gathered to celebrate and support women in business, while raising much-needed funds for Adapt Kerry Women’s Refuge.

Magda from Dingle Sushi, shared her personal experience of setting up her successful business and moving from employment to self employment while navigating motherhood.

The panel was chaired by Miriam Ferriter, whose questions guided the conversation, allowing the speakers to share their stories and advice for aspiring female entrepreneurs.

The event was not only a celebration of women in business but also a reminder of the importance of supporting local charities and organisations like Adapt Kerry Women’s Refuge, who provide crucial services to vulnerable women in the community.

“We were thrilled to host this amazing event, and we are deeply grateful for the space to get together and feel connected on International Womens Day and to all the speakers for sharing their own personal stories.'' commented Miriam Ferriter.

Comórtas Ghlór na nGael

Chuamar fé agallamh le déanaí do Chomórtas Ghlór na nGael. Bíonn comórtas ag Glór na nGael na haon bhliain do Choistí Gaelainne agus déantar measúnú ar an obair a bhíonn ar bun. D’éirigh linn an chéad áit a bhaint amach anuraidh bunaithe ar an obair a bhí ar bun againn leis na gnóanna i 2023. Tá roinnt athraithe ar an gcomórats i mbliana de bharr na coirrithe atá déanta ag Foras na Gaeilge, ach deis iontach is ea é i gcónaí féachaint siar ar an obair atá déanta go dtí seo.

We recently did an interview for Glór na nGael’s national competition, they run a yearly competition for committees/groups and evaluate the work they are doing. We were lucky enough to win first prize in the Business and State category last year based on the work we achieved in 2023. This year's competition is slightly different as the budget cuts in Foras na Gaeilge have affected the budget, but it's always great to look back on the work that's been completed to date.

Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine. There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

Seisiúin Cainte don lucht gnó Tá seisiúin cainte don lucht gnó ar bun againn i mBase Dingle Dé Máirt óna 18.30-19.30. Deis iontach do chuid Gaelainne a chleachtadh agus díriú ar an dteanga a bhíonn in úsáid sa láthair oibre. Beidh na seisiúin seo ar bun ar na dátaí seo: 25/03, 01/04, 08/04, 15/04, fáilte roimh chách. Tuilleadh eolais 087 7004 884

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

Crispy Chicken, Coriander and Lime Courgettes and Yogurt Dressing

Crispy chicken, coriander, and lime courgettes with a yogurt dressing

– a vibrant, fresh dish bursting with flavour. Golden, crunchy chicken pairs beautifully with tender courgettes, infused with zesty lime and fragrant coriander. The creamy yogurt dressing adds a cooling contrast, balancing the dish perfectly. This light yet satisfying meal is ideal for a quick midweek dinner or a relaxed weekend lunch. Serve with warm flatbreads or a simple green salad for extra freshness. Whether you’re cooking for yourself or entertaining guests, this dish is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser—simple to prepare, packed with taste, and full of bright, fresh ingredients.

Ingredients

For The Chicken

4 chicken breasts-sliced in half

300g panko crumbs

2 eggs, 200g flour oil

For The Courgettes

2 courgettes, sliced lengthways

2 limes

1 tbsp. honey

1 tsp. ground cumin

3 garlic cloves, crushed

100ml water

handful of coriander, chopped

For The Yogurt

200ml natural yogurt

½ lime juiced

handful of mint chopped salt and pepper

Method

Add the courgettes to a bowl, add a good pinch of salt and leave for about 30 minutes or so. This will help to remove some of the water from them.

For the chicken

Add a good pinch of salt to the flour. Take the chicken and dredge it in flour, the dip in the egg and then in the breadcrumbs. To cook them, put a large pan on over medium heat, once hot add a little oil and add the chicken, carefully cook the chicken pieces, you may need to turn adjust the heat as you cook them. Alternatively, you can cook them in a pan for a few minutes on each side until they take on some colour and place them on a tray and pop in to an oven (180C) for about 10-12 minutes. Check to make sure the chicken is cooked.

For the rest

While the chicken is cooking you can make up the courgettes and the sauce.

Put a small pot over a low heat, add a little oil, add the lime juice from the 2 limes, honey, cumin, garlic and water. Stir this and cook for a few minutes, allowing the mixture to reduce. Drain the courgettes and add them to the pan along with the coriander. Cook for a few minutes, taste and season. Keep warm until needed.

For the yogurt, mix the yogurt, lime juice and mint and a pinch of salt and pepper.

Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance Tourism News

March Festivals and Events

It is great to see businesses re-opening after their winter break and we wish everyone well for a busy season ahead. This month of course is dominated by Lá Fhéile Pádraig with great parades across the peninsula – Baile na nGall; Baile an Fheirtéaraigh at 11am; Dingle / Daingean Uí Chúis with two parades, 6am and 12.30pm; Castlemaine at 11.15am; and Castlegregory at 3pm. March also welcomes back Animation Dingle on the 21st and 22nd. Bain súp as!

Pobal Scoil Chorca Dhuibhne hosted West Springfield High School pupils and leaders with a wonderful week of cultural and leisure activities across the peninsula. Cathaoirleach Contae Chiarraí, Councillor Breandán Fitzgerald welcomed the group with a Civic Reception at the Dingle Bay Hotel, sponsored by Kerry County Council, and launched the West Springfield High School and Pobal Scoil Chorca Dhuibhne Perpetual Shield, sponsored by Daniel McCarthy, which will bring new shared experiences, sport and fun for the students every year. Our West Springfield friends had the opportunity to spend time at the Pobal Scoil and meet students and teachers alike learning some Irish dancing and words of Irish. Their visit also included a visit to Ionad an Bhlascaoid where they learnt more about their shared heritage and connections with the Blasket Islands and Dingle Peninsula. The Pobal Scoil pupils will travel to West Springfield in 2026. This long-standing relationship between both schools, having begun in 2015 with West Springfield High School’s first visit to Dingle, is very special with many lasting friendships between both communities. These friendships have never been as important as they are today in the spirit of building deep enduring relationships for the future.

Continuing on the series of tourism trends for 2025 published by Tourism Ireland, here are the next three to consider:

“Off the beaten track” – “According to Forbes, 2025 will see an increase in people looking for more authentic experiences and Ireland is packed with under-the-radar “detour destinations”. This is great for the quieter villages and areas of the peninsula with their quieter beaches, stunning scenery, water-based activities, horse riding in the landscape, and amazing walks.

“Astro tourism” – “Skyscanner predicts that 2025 will be a big one for star-gazing, but not a lot of people know that Ireland is one of the best places in the world to enjoy the stars, with internationally accredited locations where, if you time it right, you’ll be able to enjoy a dazzling night sky”. This week has offered us a wonderful sky full of stars just be stepping outside!

“Focus on food” – “Foodies have always travelled in search of the perfect dish and, according to Hilton, “foodies will propel the food and beverage trends forward in 2025”. Right now, Ireland is at the cutting-edge of the food scene with exceptional local ingredients, super-creative chefs and skilled artisan producers creating everything from excellent cheese to small-batch whiskey”. The Dingle Peninsula has a wealth of talented chefs, local food producers, farmers and fishermen where we can enjoy such amazing local food. Bia Dingle will showcase their members at the Bia Dingle Local Producers Showcase in Dingle Benners Hotel on Tuesday 25th March between 2pm to 5pm. This will allow hospitality providers to meet directly with local producers to talk about purchase/delivery, etc., and how to get local produce on their menus and shop shelves. Local producers will share their unique stories which hospitality providers can share in turn with their guests and get to know the producers behind the Bia Dingle brand. The event will take place on Wednesday, May 7th in the Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney. This is an important opportunity for accommodation providers, attractions, activities, and visitor experiences to meet one another in person, in pre-scheduled appointments to learn about the excellent experiences available across the county and to inspire greater collaboration within the sector. Ní i gCónaí a Fhilleann an Feall

Gach aon séasúr, bíonn ar a laghad cluiche amháin a mbíonn ábhar gearáin ag foireann amháin i leith na foirne réiteoireachta. Ní hé atá i gceist agam an gnáth-chasaoid maidir le ciceanna saora, nó dul as an imirt, nó seilbh na liathróide nuair a théann sí ar fóraoil nó ar seachrán, ach imirt ar chóir cic éirice a bhronnadh air, agus nár bronnadh. De ghnáth, admhaíonn imreoirí agus fiú lucht tacaíochta na foirne eile go raibh dul amú ar an réiteoir sna cásanna seo.

Ón méid a chonacsa an Aoine seo caite, bhí ceann de na cluichí sin ag lucht na Ríochta in aghaidh Fhánaithe Bhré i bPáirc Chnocán an Iolair, cluiche a chailleadar don aon chúl amháin, cúl sa tríú nóiméad.

Ach bhí trí cinn d’ócáidí ina dhiaidh sin go raibh

dhóigh le duine go bhfeicfeadh fear dall é.

Lena gceart a thabhairt do na cuairteoirí rinne siad dian-chosaint ar a gcúl féin as sin go deireadh, an cúl báire agus an captaen eatarthu ag coinneáil iarracht i ndiaidh iarrachta ag na Ciarraígh ó dhoras. Chruthaigh Daniel Okwute go han-mhaith, ag cothú an-chuid iarrachtaí ar fónamh, ach ní raibh an lá leo. Bíodh faoiseamh amháin acu, mar sin féin: beidh a chomhghearán ag lucht Chille Mantáin lá éigin roimh clabhsúr na sraithe!

Níorbh é sin an t-aon teip le coicíos anuas ag foireann Thrá Lí. Ní dócha go raibh mórán muiníne ag an lucht tacaíochta na Ríochta go n-éireodh leo an ceann is fearr a fháil ar Dhún Dealgan, atá ar bharr an tábla agus arb iad rogha na coitiantachta leis an chraobh a bhreith leo agus filleadh ar an roinn uachtarach. Agus b’amhlaidh a thit amach, cé nach ndearna lucht na Ríochta aon fhábhar do mhuintir Lú ar an mbealach. Is iad na cuairteoirí is mó a bhí gníomhach sa chéad leath, ach má fuair siad luach a saothar ó Dean Ebbe, fuair siad a dturnamh chomh maith, agus iar-imreoir Chiarraí Leo Gaxha díbeartha roimh an briseadh de bharr dúshlán fealltach ar Niall Brookwell. Ainneoin an bhuntáiste fir, agus dea-imirt ón bhfoireann baile, níorbh fhéidir leo cúl na cothramaíochta a scóráil, fiú agus ocht nóiméad d'am cúiteamh ghortaithe curtha leis an imirt ag an réiteoir, Glen Geraghty.

B’fhéidir go bhfuil sé ró-luath bheith ag iarraidh breithiúnas a thabhairt ar na himreoirí nua a tugadh isteach i mbliana. Tá roinnt mhaith athruithe ar leagan amach na foirne, agus tógann sé tamall i gcónaí ar an fhoireann dul i dtaithí ar

a chéile, agus cé go bhfuil cuma na maitheasa orthu, is ó am go céile a chífeá an cumas is féidir leo a thabhairt chun páirce.

Maith má tá, ach is gá an cumas san bheith ar taispeáint ar feadh 90 nóiméad seachas go fánach. Sin mar a bhainfear na cluichí, agus a chnuasófar na pointí sraithe.

An Satharn beag seo beidh na Ciarraígh i lár tíre, in aghaidh Bhaile Longphoirt, agus an Aoine dar gcionn i Loch Garman. Ba mhór ab fhiú pointe nó dhó a bhailiú le linn taistil dóibh – nó níos mó féin!

It's All In The Mind

Coming Home to the Body

Right now, can you take a moment to check in with your level of stress -on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being very stressed and 1 very relaxed. How do you know you are stressed? How did you access your stress level? Generally, there are 2 components to this. One is - what do I feel? Are my muscles tense, is my breathing shallow, are my thoughts racing?. The second is - how do I notice what I feel? How do I notice the tension,

the rumination ,the stress symptoms?

The answer is often, we don’t notice, we go through our day on automatic pilot, intent on getting things done and we don’t really notice what is happening in the body and the mind. If we are not aware of how we feel, we are unable to pick up on the distress signals the nervous system is sending and so the symptoms will compound, sometimes until they reach crisis levels. The fallout from this can be burn out , anxiety disorder, various health issues, depression and so on.

Particularly, when we live in times of uncertainty and fear , it can be very useful to slow down and check in with the body throughout the day in order to self-regulate : a moment to renew and reset our nervous system.

Interestingly, the same function that helps us to assess our stress level is also the function that helps us to regulate our stress better. All we need to do is notice, make space for whatever is present and allow sensations and thoughts to come and go without judging or criticizing, bringing as much kindness and compassion to ourselves as possible. There is no effort involved. The easiest thing in the world...the hardest thing in the world!

You can try this out in the coming weeks by taking a short mindful pause a couple of times a day.

This week we will focus on awareness of touch. Skin provides us with the sense of touch and interoception is the collection of senses providing information about the internal state of the body e.g the sensation of hunger or being able

to feel your heart beating and so on.

I’ll do this practice sitting in a chair but you can do it standing or even lying in bed as you wake up or go to sleep.

- Begin by taking a couple of slow deep breaths and ground into the body

- Notice any thoughts, feelings or sensations that come up for you and let them be. You are simply acknowledging what’s there, not trying to fix or improve anything

- Now try to bring your awareness to the sensations of your body in the chair. You might feel the points of contact on your feet with the ground beneath you: the weight of the upper body sinking into the chair; the feeling of your arms and hands on your lap or on the armrest. Feel your back, your legs and where they are coming into contact with the chair, the ground, the fabric of your clothes ,the air around you

- When you get distracted by thoughts, sounds or feelings simply notice and come back to the sensation of touch inside and outside the body

- When you are ready take an intentional breath and continue with your day.

The more often you practice, the more accessible it becomes.

I welcome any comments, reflections or questions on the email below

Duais le Buachaint: Dearbhán ón gCafé Liteartha Buaiteoir na coicíse seo caite:

Marie Uí Ghrífín, An Mhin Aird Thoir

Buairtín

le

Brighid Ní Loingsigh foilsithe ag Oidhreacht

Chorca Dhuibhne

Ón lá a tháinig sí amach ón ubh bhí saol cruaidh i ndán do Bhuairtín. Ach le hanam, le spiorad agus le fuinneamh, tugann sí faoin saol chomh maith agus is féidir léithi. Agus bíonn neart eachtraí aici lena linn!

Leagan nua í seo den scéal `Buairtín`, a scríobh Brighid Ní Loingsigh. Rugadh Brighid i gCill Mhic Iarainn Thoir, An Dromad, i deisceart Chiarraí in 1893.

Is i gcanúint Ghaeilge Uíbh Ráthaigh a scríobhadh é agus deineadh iarracht gan an teanga a athrú sa leagan nua seo. - Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne

Ó Mhárthain

Bhíos ag éisteacht le cupla scéal ar theilifís an lá cheanna. Bhíodar ag cur síos ar an airgead na tailte agus foirgnimh atá ag Trump. Do chreite. Tá a mhac atá fiche bliain agus lán do géaraíocht ina mhilliúnaí ach molann a mháthair gan a bheith ag tabhairt aon eolas fé a ghaiscí shaibhris.

Ansan tá Putin go bhfuil traein a thugann go béal dorais é ach ná féadfadh aon saghas dúracán cogaidh í a scrios. Ta cairt mhór aige ná fuil aon bheann ar aon saghas goireas aige. Is taibhseach an tigh ‘tá aige fallai clúdaithe le ór in aiteanna. Is sort sráid dá shaibhreas an tsráid agus thigh lonnaithe i dtimpeallacht taibhseach. Níl áireamh an méid saibhris atá aige, ach san am cheanna níl ach pingini scáinte ar fáil don bpobal, Coiméadfaidh san socair iad!

Seo iad na cinnirí go bhfuil trácht ortha agus ná fuil uatha ach cur lena gceirtlín. Tá an saibhreas atá ag an mbeirt seo scanruil. Scoil cheoil

Dúrt go luafainn cúpla duine imeasc scata daoine a bhí chomh maith le chéile. Is mór an moladh ata ag dul do Andrea Palandri a sheinn go binn agus go bhfuil CD ar an margadh aige fé cheoltóirí Shliabh Luachra. Tháinig sé go hÉirinn ón Iodail agus tá Gaolainn mhilis ar bharr a theangain. Ard fhear. Bhí Toose ar a Chiorcail Comhrá blasta.

Mar is gnáthach bhí Pádraig ó hEalaí ar na bioráin agus leabhar agus léacht binn agus leabhar uaidh, fé Bhréanann agus cnoc Bhréanainn. Is maith é Pádraig.

Níl aon teora le Ailean Domhnallach ag seinnt ar an bpíb mhór agus thug sé seal ag múineadh na Gailice. Ait go leor measaim dá mbeadh aon chrích in aon chor ort ní thógfadh sé i bhfad uait teanga dúchais na hAlban, Gáidhlig a fhoghlaim.

Chuir Becky Ni Éallaithe scata ag rinnce ar an sean-nós go bríomhar snasta agus bhí leabhar filíochta ag Dairína Ní chinnéide, dár teideal Teacht Andiar. Líofa Óg

Tá buachaill óg ón Úcráin ar an mBuailtin agus tá Gaolainn chomh blasta aige is a bheadh ag aon chainteoir líofa áitiúil, a deirtear liom. Bail ó Dhia air. Iománáníocht

Bhíos ag feachaint ar thrí chluiche Iomána Dé Domhnaigh.

Bhí an chluiche idir Cilll Chainnigh a bhí go hainnis agus Tiobrad Árann a bhí ar fheabhas ach is beag in aon chor a tugadh do fhealanna. Bhí an cúram as ord ar fad. Bhí sé cosúil le Cath na mBaitíní. Siar sa chluiche cuireadh ceathrar don ngort, triúr Cill Chainneach agus duine ó Thiobrad Árann. Ní raibh aon dealltramh leis an sléacht. Dar liom gur cheart don réiteoir aon duine a bhuaileann imreoir eile le camán sa cheann a cur go poll an amhrais. Cluiche iomána, spoirt ‘sea í, ní búistéireacht.

Bhí Laois agus Aondtroim ag imirt ar a ndícheall ach gan aon fheall baolach gránna ann.

Tá gaisce déanta ag Gearaltach an Chláir ag bainistiú foireann iomána Aondroma.

Bhuaidh Luimneach le feidhm, ar an nGaillimh. Amhrán na BhFiann

Rud eile sheas an dá fhoireann go dtí go raibh amhrán na bhFiann críochnaithe, tátar coitianta ag léiriú droch bhéasa faid a bhíonn an tAmhrán náisiúnta a sheinnt nó á chanadh. Bíonn cuid dos na himreóirí sall is anall ba dhóigh leat go raibh míola ag siúl ortha nó go raibh tochas ortha. Ba cheart do CLG an masla leanúnach so a stop mar a deintear i dtíortha eile. Ní gá gioláin a dhéanamh dúinn féin.

Bás

Fuair Walter Sheehy ón nDaingean bás ar an 7ú Lá do Mhárta.

Méala mór a bhás dá chéile Máire iníon, Olga mac Mícheál gar chlann gaolta agus cáirde. Fear an- gheanúil b’ea Bháiltéar- bhí aithne agam air ó Scoil na mBráthar Críostaí. Bhí an focal maith nó scéal grinn aige coitianta. Fear gur mhaith leat bualadh leis. In iothlainn Dé a anam caoin. Fuair Dónal Ó Gairbhia ón Riasc bás an deire seachtaine seo caite.

Méala mór a bhás dá chéile Eibhlín dá mhac Breandán a iníon Eibhlís, dá deartharacha Mícheál agus Jeaic, a dheirfiúr Nóirín, gar chlann gaolta agus cáirde. Bhí an- aithne air. Bhí a athair Mícheál agus a mháthair Nóra ar shlí na fírinne mar a dheartháracha Tomás agus Seosaimh, an-chara dhom. Beidh Dónal ag seinnt an bhosca ceoil agus ag lomadh gháirdíní na bhFlaitheas,

do Pheadar. Bhíodh sé ag socrú innill lomadh gáirdíní agus ag seinnt cheoil agus imirt chaide.

I bhFlaitheas na naomh a anam caideachtúil ceannsa.
