Manx Shearwater Alert!

The BirdWatchIreland West Kerry Branch is appealing to everyone on the Dingle Peninsula these next few weeks to be on the lookout for stranded Manx Shearwater fledglings.

What are they?

They are pigeon-sized, web-footed black and white seabirds that breed on the Blasket Islands. During the next few weeks this year’s fledglings are making their first big migration to the waters off Brazil and Uruguay where they will spend the winter months.

Why are they stranding in our towns and villages?

They are attracted and disoriented by the strong electric lights with which we surround ourselves. Once they crash land on roads and in gardens they are rendered helpless as they cannot take off from flat surfaces (they either need steep slopes or be on the water) and are vulnerable to predation by cats and dogs.

What can you do if you find one?

Please pick it up carefully and place it securely in a cardboard box. Do not give it any food or water and ring one of the volunteers listed below who will collect it and release it safely back to the wild.

Four good reasons to get involved

1. Manx Shearwaters are long lived birds. The oldest ringed and recovered bird was 52 years old. By picking up and helping one bird you might help dozens of generations of shearwaters yet to come!

2. The shearwaters’ parents have travelled all the way from South America to the safe breeding colony on the Blasket Islands in order to lay one single egg which they incubate for up to 55 days after which they feed the fledgling for a further 60-70 days. That’s a big effort for this protected, amber-listed little bird. It seems a small effort on our part to pick it up and release it again safely to give it one more go at finding its way south.

3. Usually they are entirely uninjured and just need a little help to get airborne again.

4. We have very few opportunities to get up close and personal with some of our more elusive wildlife. Shearwater can generally only be observed high out to sea from a boat as they breed underground on our remoter islands and only come back to their breeding burrows at night. This is a great chance for everyone to find out a little bit more about the great biodiversity here on the Dingle peninsula and to help in a small but very effective way to protect it.

Last but not least let’s consider switching off some unnecessary outside lights to prevent these birds from crash landing in the first place!

Last year we collected and released more than 60 birds around the peninsula – thanks to all the people around the peninsula who picked them up and gave us a call. Some people even carried an empty cardboard box in their cars just in case they came across one of them. Thank you!

Fuelling Your Children for a Great Day at School

As the Summer winds down and school bells ring, the annual back-toschool scramble begins. Between finding the perfect backpack and getting kids back into a routine, there’s one important task that often feels like a mountain to climb: making sure your kids are eating well. It’s easier said than done, especially when mornings are chaotic, and your child’s idea of lunch is a bag of crisps and a few jellies. Don’t panic, remember you are still the boss and there is plenty room for negotiation. Read on for a few realistic, affordable and actually doable nutrition tips to help you and your children kick of the school year on the right note.

Breakfast Challenge: Powering Up in the Morning

Let’s face it: mornings can be a whirlwind of alarm snoozing, missing socks and forgotten homework. But a nutritious breakfast is a non-negotiable, especially when it comes to setting your kids up for a day of learning. There are endless choices of convenient cereals but be aware that many of these are not as nutritious as they claim on the box. When choosing a cereal look for ingredients you recognize. If you need to go back to school yourself to read a food label, then it is probably not the best choice of cereal. Another great tip is to look for cereals that have less than 8g of sugar per 100g and at least 3g of fibre per 100g. Always compare products using the 100g measurement, rather than serving size, for a more accurate evaluation.

For healthy alternatives, than can be just as quick and convenient, here are some quick, nutritious breakfast ideas that won’t have you tearing your hair out:

Overnight Oats: This is a magic trick for busy mornings. The night before, mix oats with milk (or a dairy alternative) and toss in some fruit or a handful of nuts. By morning, it’s a creamy, delicious breakfast ready to go. Let the kids choose their toppings the night before so they feel in control. Smoothies: These are your secret weapon for sneaking in all sorts of goodness. Throw in a banana, a handful of spinach (trust me, they won’t even taste it), some natural yogurt, and a dash of honey. Boom—breakfast in a cup. Add a scoop of protein powder, chopped nuts/seeds for older kids who need a bit more fuel.

Whole-Grain Toast with Nut Butter: Simple, fast, and satisfying. Add sliced bananas, sliced pear or apples on top for extra fibre and vitamins. For kids with nut allergies, swap the nut butter for a seed butter like sunflower.

Greek Yogurt with Toppings: Let them create their own parfait with Greek yogurt, berries, and a sprinkle of granola. It’s quick and packed with protein to keep them full until lunch.

And not to be forgotten - eggs, fish, beans and porridge don’t need an introduction and have been included in breakfast meals for donkey’s years, with great success.

Lunchbox Heroes: Making Midday Meals Count School lunches can be tricky—especially when you’re trying to balance nutrition with foods your kids will actually eat. And let’s be honest, some -

times the “eat your veggies” lecture doesn’t go down so well. The goal here is to keep it simple and include a balance of proteins, carbs, and healthy fats to keep their energy up through the afternoon slump. Here’s how you can make it work:

Wrap it up: Whole-grain wraps are versatile and easy to handle. Fill them with lean protein like roast turkey or chicken, tuna or smashed sardines, some leafy greens, and a slice of cheese. You can also go vegetarian with hummus, shredded carrots, and cucumber.

DIY Lunchables: Forget the shop-bought versions loaded with junk foods—make your own! Use whole-grain crackers, sliced cheese, and deli meat (beef, chicken or turkey). Add some fruit on the side, and you’ve got a balanced lunch that’s fun to eat.

Leftovers Makeovers: Last night’s dinner can be today’s lunch with a little creativity. Got some leftover chicken? Throw it in a salad or a wrap. Leftover pasta? Toss it with some veggies, cheese cubes and olive oil for a quick pasta salad.

Bento Boxes: Kids love variety, and bento boxes are perfect for mixing and matching. Think small portions of fruit, veggies, protein (like boiled eggs, roast chickpeas or edamame), and a small homemade protein ball It’s visually appealing and keeps them interested.

Snacks are where things can go off the rails, especially when kids are grabbing whatever’s within reach. But with a little prep, you can have healthy snacks ready to go that are just as convenient as a bag of Taytos.

Fruit and Nut Mix: Pre-portion some trail mix with their favourite nuts and dried fruit. Add a few dark chocolate chips for a little treat. This combo is a great balance of protein, fibre, and just enough sweetness.

Veggies and Dip: Slice up some carrots, cucumbers, and bell peppers, and pair them with hummus or a yogurt-based dip. It’s crunchy, satisfying, and full of nutrients.

Cheese and Whole-Grain Crackers: A classic combo that’s quick to pack and eat. Opt for good quality cheese and go for whole-grain crackers or oatcakes for added fibre.

Popcorn: Air-popped popcorn is a whole grain and makes for a light, crunchy snack. Sprinkle a little parmesan, paprika or nutritional yeast for flavour.

How to Pull it Off!

Get the Kids Involved: Kids are more likely to eat what they help make. Let them pick out fruits and veggies at the shop or help prep meals. It makes them feel empowered and teaches them about healthy eating. Batch cook when you can at the weekend prepping some meals or snacks. It might feel like a chore, but it saves you tons of time during the week. Think boiled eggs, chopped veggies, or cooked chicken breast that can be thrown into wraps or salads. For healthy snacks prep-ahead protein balls, trail mix and granola.

Remember, not every day is going to be perfect, and that’s okay. If your child has a less-than-healthy day, don’t stress—just get back on track the next day. Balance is key.

As kids head back to school, fueling their bodies with the right foods can make a world of difference in their focus, energy, and overall health. But it doesn’t have to be a Herculean task. With these easy, affordable ideas, you can set your children up for success—without losing your sanity. And remember, perfection isn’t the goal; consistency is. Here’s to a healthy, happy, and successful school year for everyone—sock-matching struggles and all!

The Dingle Food Festival 2024

Great Daingean Uí Chúis Bake Off

Dingle’s premier baking competition for girls and boys, is back. This year we are challenging our young competitors with the baking of a chocolate cake.

The cake can be a sponge, a mousse cake, a chocolate torte, a Swiss roll, anything you may like to tempt us with. It can be decorated, iced, with cream or ganache layers – it’s endless.

But no chocolate biscuit cakes. Challenge yourself and join in the fun. Once again, we are holding the bake off in Dick Mack’s Yard from 11.30 onwards. Please come along and cheer on the bakers for the judging of the competition.

How the event works: Once registered to take part in the bake off, all interested parties are asked to bake their Chocolate Cake.

Selections must be baked by the entrant and brought to Dick Mack’s Yard, Dingle for judging on Sunday 6th of October at 11.30am.

Judging shall be carried out by a panel of our award winning chefs from Dingle.

The competition results will be announced at12.30 pm on Sunday 6th October.

Panic And Terror On The Streets Of Dingle

-Dublin Weekly News, 23 February, 1867

The inhabitants of this town were thrown into the greatest consternation on Thursday evening by the marching through the streets of a large police force under the command of Sub-Inspector Gilpin.

The men were armed with breech-loading rifles and marched in military fashion to the western extremity of the strand near the sea shore. On their return and on entering the town Mr. Gilpin gave the order “Commence firing”.

From then until they arrived at the lower end of Green Street the police kept up a constant fusillade. They halted for a brief period and were again given the order to commence firing.

The shooting was resumed until they arrived at Main Street and then down as far as the constabulary barracks and all this activity caused great excitement among the inhabitants.

It is to be hoped that some member of parliament in the House of Commons will demand an explanation regarding the uncalled for display of arms which caused such a panic in the town of Dingle and caused such extreme terror to its peaceful inhabitants.

Did Mr. Gilpin anticipate any rebellious outbreak in this area which led him to believe that such a display of arms was essential? All the constabulary stations in the barony have been closed and all the police are now concentrated in Dingle.

(This is an interesting report. It must have been known by Mr. Gilpin that the Fenian Rising, which started nationwide on March 5th, 1867, actually began prematurely on February 12 in Kerry with an attack on Kells coastguard station. Like so many other risings and rebellions it was a military disaster.)

Riot in Tralee

-Cork Examiner, 17 August, 1867

On yesterday evening about 6 o’clock a man named Maurice Mawe, a labourer, was taken into custody for being drunk in public by two Nelsonstreet constables. They were bringing him to the bridewell in Moyderwell when he became violent. There were a number of drunken rowdies on the street who were arguing among themselves at the time. Seeing the prisoner bawling and resisting they dashed to his rescue and prevented the constables for going any further.

Several more police arrived just as an aggressive mob assembled. Suspecting they might be assaulted the police drew their swords. This prevented any sudden attack but the mob followed the police shouting and hissing. One lad named Flynn, who is not quite sane, managed to snatch a sword from one of the policemen but it was quickly recovered.

Three of the ringleaders were captured and lodged in the bridewell. The gaol was filled with so many drunkards that night that some of them had to be released.

An English Visitor to Dingle Workhouse

-Kerry Evening Post, 02 October, 1852

“My visit to the Dingle Union Workhouse far exceeded my expectations. It is exceedingly clean and healthy and everything in its place. I found about 60 young girls working at embroidery under the supervision of a teacher from Dublin.

There were about as many older people engaged in preparing wool and flax and others in spinning those materials. More people were employed in repairing the Union clothes – it all presented a most interesting and industrious scene.

In another apartment about 20 boys were learning tailoring under the direction of a master tailor. Another group of boys were working looms under the supervision of a master weaver.

Several boys were busily working on a vegetable garden in the grounds and finer crops I have seldom seen. I was very mush gratified and impressed with my visit”.

The celebration focuses on The Big E’s Irish Pavilion in the Young Building, which features vendors, artisans, whiskey distillers, educators, craftworkers and vacation-itinerary planners from across Ireland’s famous Dingle Peninsula and Wild Atlantic Way for a 23rd year.

Upcoming Events on the Peninsula

Dingle Marathon September 7th 2024 see’s the return of the Dingle Marathon which travels west from Dingle town along the coast past Ventry to Slea Head, enjoying awesome views of the Blasket Islands along the way. Pass Dún Chaoin and north to Baile an Fheirtéaraigh and Gallarus before turning back south to the finish in Dingle town. Please note that there will be some road closures so make sure you plan ahead for that day, and thank you for your help and patience in supporting this great event.

Camp Sheep Fair This year’s fair will be held on the 18th September 2024 it dates back centuries to the time of Lord Ventry when a ram auction was

held in the village. Lord Ventry brought the first black faced scotch breed of sheep to West Kerry. He carried 1,000 ewes on his lands in Beheenagh, Camp at this time. The fair has survived down through the years and is as always, a great social occasion too for the local sheep farmers and the families of Camp with plenty of local music as well . In recent years the fair has developed and now they have horses and donkeys, fowl and other animals along with the sheep for sale at the fair.

HERITAGE WALK

To celebrate Heritage Week and Water Heritage Day, Camp Community Council organised a Dingle Railway walk to Curradubh bridge, site of the 1893 train crash. It was a lovely occasion, Brigid and Sean shared the history of the train and some local stories on the site of the crash concluding with Bríd Ní Mhóráin reciting "The Dingle Train". Afterwards teas and coffee were served at Anne's Cafe in Ashe's, followed by a lovely traditional music session.

Thanks and well done to all and thanks to the local landowner who allowed access through the fields to the site and to all who attended on the day. The event is supported by the local Authority Water Programme - lawwaters.ie and Camp Community Council.

Congratulations to Sean Moriarty Manager and all the staff at Lispole Lamb and Wool Co-op / Comharchumann Uain Chiarraí who celebrated 50 years of operation recently. Congratulations to those farmers who had the foresight to form the Co-op 50 years ago and are still working together today. Their vision is admirable and an inspiration to all of us. The Co-op has provided a one stop shop and service to farmers in West Kerry. Fr. Michael Moynihan, PP, Corca Dhuibhne pastoral area celebrated mass and refreshments were served on this landmark occasion. There was a very big attendance on the day.

OBITUARY

Sympathy is extended to Tadhg O’Halloran, Curraheen on the death of his father JOHN B. (Sonny) O'HALLORAN, Forts, Ballyduff, who passed away peacefully at Riverside Nursing Home, Abbeydorney on Sunday 18th August, 2024. Predeceased by his wife Katty Mae, son Maurice and grandson Timothy. Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his sons John, Daniel, Mike, Tadhg and Kevin, daughter Catherine, 8 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, sister-in-law, daughters in law, nieces and nephews, relatives, wonderful neighbours and friends. RIP.

VINTAGE RALLY

Camp Vintage will be held on Sunday, September 15th at The Junction Bar, Camp. Gates open at 1.00. Starting with the cars, tractors and Honda 50s run around the peninsula, returning to Camp Junction Bar, where vintage cars and agricultural machinery will be on show for the afternoon. Ploughing and threshing demonstrations and much more on the day.

Kiddies funday too, a great day out for all the family! Proceeds to Cystic Fibrosis Ireland and Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association. Any help is appreciated on the day.

CAMP FAIR

Camp Fair is on Wednesday, September 18th this year. The sheep fair is always a big social occasion for young and old. There will be prizes for quality sheep penned, chosen on the day. Winners of perpetual cups last year are asked to please return them.

Prizes for the best pens of sheep erected by boys and girls u/18 years old. Auction of sheep and other Items at 2.00 p.m. Fancy dress and fun activities for the children in Joe O‘Dwyer's field. Sponsored sheep much appreciated for the auction.

The pet show will be held in O'Dwyers forecourt at 3.30 p.m.

Our local musician/singer Gerard Mulligan will entertain us all day outside O’Dwyer's and after the fair at Ashe's Bar.

Camp Fair cuisine, the mutton pie and traditional dishes served in local Bars, Anne’s Coffee Bar, and in O'Dwyers Supermarket meals are served all day from early til late. And Mary's tasty mutton pies at The Junction Bar must be sampled too. At The Ranch in Sandy Feet you can try out Chef Antonio’s Italian cuisine, if that's your fancy.

Funds this year go to Camp Childcare and Ailise's Quest for the World Championship. Ailise Deane has qualified for the World Adventure Racing Championship in Ecuador (700km) which is a phenomenal achievement. NEW SIGNS. The signs for the Garda Text Alert System have recently been installed by Kerry County Personnel on public signposts along the streets at various points around Dingle Town.

The primary aim of the scheme is to invite members of the public to immediately alert the Garda if they witness any public order incidents or suspicious activity with a simple confidential text message. The text is to 50555 followed by DINGLE or DUC and a brief description of the incidents to which the Garda can assess and take whatever action is needed to deal with the situation.

Texts trí Gaeilge are indeed welcome using DUC (Daingean Ui Chuis) as the first word in the message.

PEIL. Good luck to the Dingle Senior Football Team who take on Dr Crokes in the Kerry Senior Club Championship Final this Sunday. The game is fixed for a 2p.m. start in Austin Stacks Park in Tralee and the club are requesting as many supporters as possible to cheer on the team in this important competition.

REGATTA. Dingle Rowing Club recently held their Annual Two Day Regatta which was a great success with 16 races in total catering for age groups from under 12s right up to Seniors Ladies and Mens. All the under age competitions were really competitive with an unbelievable 12 crews lining up for the under 12s mixed contest. Crews travelled from The Maharees, Clare, Cork and Galway to really make up stiff competition for our local crews in each event. Congratulations to all the competitors, their families, trainers, club officials and helpers, and judging by the standards on view naomhóg racing is in no danger of dying out anytime soon. Special mention to Eddie, Maunza and Karen from the Dingle club who have put so much time and commitment into the promotion of the sport and in particular in tutoring of the young athletes to such a high standard.

The club also wish to publicly thank all the sponsors of the regatta for their continued support, the harbour authorities for the use of such a fine facility and the commercial and leisure operators who use the harbour for their cooperation throughout the weekend.

COASTAL ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS. The All Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships were in Dingle Harbour over the past weekend and despite the difficult weather conditions were run off in a very efficient manner. Crews from all coastal rowing area around the country took part in over 70 different categories or rowing events for all age groups off the outer Marina Harbour Breakwater.

Dingle Crews featured prominently in the under age races securing silver medals in the under 12s and 18s boys races. Some Dingle crews suffered interference from poorly managed other boats which im peded their progress at crucial times in their respective competitions but all part of the sport at this level.

DINGLE MARATHON. The Annual Dingle Marathon and Half Mara thon events will be held on Saturday September 7th starting from Strand Street at 9a.m. The 13 mile Half Marathon finishes at Dún Chaoin while the full competitors continue through Ballyferriter and Gallarus before finishing in Dingle Marina Car Park. The Half Marathon finish ers will be transported back to Dingle by bus and some road closures along the route will be necessary to ensure the safety of all involved. We urge all road users to take note of the proposed road closure no tices and cooperate with the Gardaí and stewards during the event. Good luck to all the local athletes who have entered and let's hope the weather will not interfere too much with your enjoyment on the day.

Due to an EU regulatory change regarding certain security screening equipment, the following LAGS rules will come into effect at Kerry Airport from September 1st 2024

1. Only LAGS in containers of 100ml or less can be brought through security – these can stay inside your cabin bag and there are no restrictions on the number of containers or type of LAG (provided they are not dangerous goods) – they do not have to be in a plastic bag

2. We will accept LAGS in containers over 100ml but these must fall into the category of baby foods/milk, medicines or special dietary requirements – these must be presented at the screening point outside of your cabin bag but do not have to be in a plastic bag – they will be subject to additional screening after they have passed through the x-ray equipment.

3. All other LAGS in containers over 100ml, aside from point 2 above, will be rejected and you will be asked to surrender them at the screening point for disposal.

If you have LAGS that fall into the category of point 3 above, then please ensure they are packed into your hold baggage or else do not bring them. It’s important to note that the screening equipment itself, which is of a high quality, is not in question and also that the European Commission are not acting on any new threat information, but rather they are responding as a precautionary measure to a temporary technical issue that has been identified. We expect to resume allowing all LAGS to remain inside cabin baggage at some stage in 2025.

Inch Notes

A community biodiversity otter walk will take place on Saturday 7th September at 10:00am - 12:00pm with ecologist Cathy Eastman (Biodiversity Partners) as part of the Inch Community Biodiversity Action Plan funded by Community Foundation Ireland. All welcome to take part and learn about the biodiversity in our community. We will be walking in the river so please bring wellies, waterproofs and perhaps a walking stick. Meeting point: the old bridge.

Clean-up and Maintenance Days will take place on the following Saturdays from 10am-12pm. For clean-ups, bags will be provided. Pickers and high-vis vests might also be provided but please bring your own if you have them.

Honoured to meet Ukrainian Actor & Director Akhtem Seitablayev on Thursday 22nd August at a screening of the Rising Hawk: Battle for the Carpathians. Abhainn an ScÁil / Annascaul - Daingean Uí CHúis / Dingle

The Dingle Way is a beautifully scenic long distance walking trail on the world famous Dingle Peninsula. At approximately 176 km (109 miles) long, the hiking route officially begins and ends in Tralee, the county capital, and takes in some of the world’s most breath taking scenery. You can join the trail at any number of points along its length as it hugs the coast along the Wild Atlantic Way. There are also many short loop walks and many mountain hikes and trails off the main Dingle Way offering excellent walking alternatives to cater for all interests.

Leaving the village o f Anascaul ( Abhainn an Scáil), home o f Antarctic explorer Tom Crean and renowned sculptor Jerome Connor the Dingle Way briefly joins the busy Tralee -Dingle road (N86) before turning left and then right finding a quieter road that twists and turns for a little over 4km before finall y descending to sea level near the magnificent ruin of the 16th century Minard Castle ( Caisleán na Mine Airde), a tower house built by the Fitzgeralds, Knights of Kerry, to protect against Cromwellian forces.

Leaving Minard, the Dingle Way rises steeply up a narrow path and goes on to follow some classic Irish boreens that weave around the surrounding farmland for the next 6km. Before crossing the N86 road at Lispole (Lios Póil) you will have sight of the remains of the Lispole Railway Viaduct built in 1934 and which formed part of the Tralee-Dingle Railway which operated from 1893 to 1953

The trail heads north in the direction of Croaghskearda ( Cruach Sceirde ) Mountain (608m) on a minor road for a few kms before cutting across farmland and rising onto the lower mountain slopes through Lios Deargáin, where you can see the remains of an old fort which christened the townland This part of the Dingle Way lasts for around 5km and can be difficult underfoot, care must be taken. A b ridge crossing the Garfinny River sees the Dingle Way reali gning itself in a south -westerl y direction and heading straight for the town of Dingle. The trail traverses the Conor P ass road and then descends towards Dingle, going from track to road, and finally arriving in Dingle via the Spa Road.

Billy, John, Siobhán, Joe, Áine and Orla would like to express our thanks to all who sympathised, attended and helped in anyway in the aftermath of Martin’s sudden and tragic passing.

We are grateful to those who sent food to our homes and in general made things as easy as possible for us, we really appreciate it.

Although people first came to Ireland in Mesolithic times, the first to settle permanently in any one area and to farm the land came in the early Neolithic period. The first groups would probably have arrived from across the Irish Sea, around 4300 BC, bringing domesticated animals and plants with them.

It was a time of great change, and is characterised by the great megalithic tombs. The most famous of these would be the Passage Tomb at New Grange, in the Boyne Valley, which is a World Heritage Site, but there were also Court Cairns and Portal Tombs, although examples of these are not to be found in Corca Dhuibhne, or indeed in Kerry generally, apart from one exception. It was also the time of the beginning of land enclosure, as animals needed to be kept away from the crops.

Polished stone axes, although already used in the Mesolithic, became a very useful tool for clearing woodland to make fields, the timber then being put to use. There are examples of areas of pre-bog field fences

This funny and interactive family show presents lively nursery rhymes and sing-along songs set to acoustic Irish music which will have all the family jumping, clapping and laughing along.

on the Dingle Peninsula, some of which might date from as early as the Neolithic period. A variety of other stone tools were also now in use (e.g. scrapers, for cleaning leather, flint knives, arrowheads etc.) Saddle querns were used for grinding grain to make flour, which could be used in a variety of meals. Hunting, gathering and fishing would of course still have been practised, as we still do today! Pottery was also now made for the first time. Many artefacts would also have been fashioned out of more perishable materials (wood, leather, basketry), as well as out of bone. In West Kerry megalithic tombs known as Wedge Tombs (because of their shape) were first constructed towards the end of the Neolithic, and would have continued on in use into the earlier Bronze Age. There are at least 12 examples on the peninsula, along with some other tombs of megalithic construction, but difficult to classify due to their ruinous nature, so might be of an earlier date.

Chicken and chorizo stew is a hearty, flavour-packed dish that brings together the best of Spanish and rustic cuisine. Combining tender chicken pieces with the smoky, spicy depth of chorizo, this stew is rich in both taste and aroma. Slow-cooked with a variety of vegetables and infused with paprika, garlic, and herbs, it creates a warming, comforting meal that's perfect for Autumnal days. The chorizo adds a robust, slightly spicy kick, while the chicken absorbs the vibrant flavours, resulting in a stew that's both satisfying and easy to prepare, ideal for family dinners or an easy mid-week meal.

Ingredients

800g chicken thighs

1 large onion, sliced

3 garlic cloves, crushed

1 red chilli

1 red pepper, deseeded and sliced

100g chorizo, cubed

1 1/2 tbsp smoked paprika

1 tbsp thyme

1 can chopped tomatoes

1 can butterbeans, drained

handful fresh spinach

150ml chicken stock

handful parsley, chopped salt and pepper to taste

Method

Put a pan over medium to high heat, once hot add a little oil and then add the chicken thighs (you may want to do this in batches), brown them well one both sides. Once they have browned, remove them and turn the heat down a little.

Add the onions, garlic, chilli and red pepper to the pan and allow them to cook slowly for about 5-10 minutes, add the chorizo, paprika and thyme. Cook for another few minutes. Add the chicken pieces back to the pan along with the tomatoes, butter beans and stock. Season with salt and pepper. Allow this to simmer for about 25 minutes (make sure the chicken is cooked). Add the spinach and cook for a minute or two until it has wilted. Taste and adjust the seasoning, add parsley and serve.

Played in the superb SETU Carlow grounds early Sunday morning at 10am,the Kerry girls hit the ground running as Lucy Kennedy put Saoirse Brosnan away for a great opportunity only for the Navan Road keeper to make a fine save.

A/C/I/L settled the better and had a rock solid defence in Jenna Crean, Captain Muireann Mehigan,Tara Laide and Aoibhinn O Callaghan at left back.

Niamh O Callaghans missile like long throws created a big chance for Saoirse but Navan Road had their keeper to thank again.

Erin O Shea,Maria Evans and Lucy all attacked gamely and a great ball by Saoirse saw Erin through only for the Navan Road keeper to excellently save.

Nil nil at half time but you could see the girls grow in confidence.

Fresh legs saw Sadhbh Moynihan and Èabha Dolan enter the fray and these two girls certainly upped the ante.

Lia Sheehy thundered into the game and we created chances for both Èabha and Maria but to no avail.

Orla Curran in goals was smart off her line to collect any through balls and got great purchase into the wind when kicking out from the hand.

Navan Road won a corner and an excellent ball in was brilliantly headed clear by Lia where by Aoibhinn took off up the right wing before a serious of passes found Saoirse who crossed into the box for Lucy to finish empathically to the net with only five minutes left to play.

Those five minutes seemed an enternity but the Kerry girls passed and took the sting out of Navan Roads final attacks before the Ref sounded the whistle much to the delight of the huge Kerry following.

Unfortunately the final was a tough affair and all be it that the West Kerry girls gave it there all it wasn’t to be as they came up against a very physical & skilful St. Pats of Cavan team who won out on a scoreline of 5-0.

Neart na Machairí - Creative Coastal Resilience

Neart na Machairí is a two-year creative climate action project bringing together the expertise and lived experience of ten members of the Maharees community with ecologists, climate scientists and state agencies to reflect on the question, how can we build our community resilience in the face of predicted future challenges regarding climate change and biodiversity loss?

For our first summer our project designer, Zoë Rush and Steering Group members representing Maharees Conservation Association, Aidan O’Connor, Martha Farrell, Jeanne Splianne and Patricia Herrero are organizing a series of Learning Days to explore the Maharee habitat, biodiversity, climate predictions and ways that other communities have mitigated or adapted to climate change and biodiversity loss. These days are free and open to the local community. Meanwhile our embedded artists, Emer Fallon, Silke Michels and Zoë Uí Fhaoláin Green, are immersing themselves in the unique culture of our beautiful tombolo through connecting with our ten community partners and facilitating creative activities that enable us to think about these possible future challenges and opportunities with new eyes.

This project is a partnership between Maharees Conservation Association and Dingle Hub and is supported through the Creative Climate Action programme by Creative Ireland.

Emer Fallon, Silke Michels, Zoë Uí Fhaoláin Green (embedded artists) created a map of Maharees with natural pigments to explore the favourite places of members of the community during the project launch in May.

Kerry Archaeological & Historical Society: Gáirdín Cuimhneacháin Lios Póil / Lios Póil Garden of Remembrance

The people of Lios Póil have been busy over the last four months, preparing a new Garden of Remembrance for the parish.

The new garden is situated just off the main N86 road near to where the Lios Póil Ambush monument was originally situated and close to Keane’s shop and Séipeál Naomh Eoin Baiste.

Background

A monument to the Lios Póil ambush was erected near the ambush site on the N86 in 1962. The ornate Celtic cross has served as a wonderful memorial to West Kerry’s involvement in the Irish War of Independence however safe access has become an issue in recent years due it’s close proximity to the busy main road.

Around 2020, a new solution became a possibility when Annette Glavin, former post mistress of Lios Póil post office, gifted a nearby field in trust to the parish for the purpose of moving the cross to a safer spot. The field is a perfect location as it well situated, can be accessed safely from a side road off the N86 and is the original site of Arda Mór National School (18411911) - focal point for events during the Lios Póil ambush in March 1921.

The local Coiste Cuimhneacháin Thomáis Ághais (a local committee of volunteers that organised the Tomás Ághas and Lios Póil Ambush centenary events) then took on the project and saw the opportunity to expand the purpose of the garden to act as a garden of remembrance and social space for whole Lios Póil community, as well as visitors to the parish.

Turning a Field into a Garden

Work on the new garden site commenced in May 2024 coordinated by Matthew Griffin. The field was over-grown, so Mike Ferriter was engaged to clear the field and level the site. Due care was taken to safely conserve any trees on the site and mature Ash and Conifer trees were safely worked around to form a part of the final garden.

With the site cleared, a garden layout was designed by Risteard Mac Eoin and Tony Bergin and activities started at pace! Considerable work had to be undertaken including the laying of paths, erection of fencing and wire, undergrowth cutback, construction of gates and the clearing of the adjacent glen etc. The team researched where the original Arda Mór school was situated, and the footprint of the school building was laid out on the site. The original name stone of the school was located and moved to the site along with one of the original windowsills of the school that was discovered when cleaning the nearby glen.

Moving the Cross

Great care and planning had to be carried out in moving the Lios Póil ambush monument from its original site, overseen by local stonemason Malcolm Curran. The Celtic cross was detached from the monument and taken away for cleaning. The base was then carefully freed and moved to the garden with the help of Thomas Devane, Denis Rayel and John Begley. A new tree was planted on the now vacant site of the cross – and the tree slip used has links with the patriot Tomás Aghas, who taught in Arda Mór school.

The cross and base were reunited with great care on the new site. An impressive stone wall was constructed behind the new location of the cross by Pat Lovett and Mike Jim Fitzgerald.

To commemorate the gift of the garden to the parish, Matthew Griffin constructed a bench from Minard stone which was placed beside the Lios Póil Ambush memorial. The inscription on the bench remembers the O’Cathasaigh family from Lios Póil Post Office, original owners of the field and valued members of the Lios Póil community throughout their lives. Some finishing touches then had to made to the garden: raking and stone picking, new grass seed spread, fences painted, final grass cutting, and temporary flag poles erected. The result was then unveiled as part of a gathering of the Lios Póil community just after Féile Lios Póil 2024.

The Garden project has been a great community effort and has been strongly supported by Údarás na Gaeltachta, who helped purchase many of the materials required and supported work in the garden. Phase 2 of the Project

Now that Phase 1 of the garden is complete, Phase 2 plans are being finalised to enhance the garden further and to provide information to visitors. This is hoped to include: the placement of two new memorial installations; road signage; bi-lingual information boards for visitors; a permanent flagpole; the planting of flowers and shrubs etc. We also hope to collaborate with the pupils and teachers of Scoil Naomh Eoin Baiste to record aspects of the history and the flora & fauna on site. An official opening of the garden is planned to coincide with the anniversary of the Lios Poil ambush in March 2025.

Outdoor Country market Castlegregory: We would like to thank everyone who visited our market over the Summer months. Even though the weather wasn't the best over the 13 weeks we were up and running it was still a good summer. It was lovely to see all of the regulars returning and it is always lovely to see new faces as they discover our market for the first time. That's all folks until June next year.... see you all there.

Art Exhibition: The CCC wishes to thank all artists who took part in the exhibition. The weekend was very successful and we wish to thank all the members of the public who supported the exhibition over the weekend. Many congratulations to the prize winners who won paintings and artwork donated by the artists.

Maharees Heritage Weekend: 13th - 15th September. Celebrate the heritage of the Maharees with a number of events including music and picture display, mini regatta, music and dance and mass. Event details advertised locally by Maharees Heritage and Conservation Association.

Castlegregory Tidy Towns: If you would like

to join our weekly volunteering activities we usually meet every Saturday at 10:00am at the Castlegregory Playground unless otherwise stated. Please check the side of the little library there for any updates each week.

Castlegregory Care of the Aged/Active Retired: Dinners on Tuesdays in the Clubrooms. Dinners suspended for the summer break until August 20th. New members are always welcome. Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

Castlegregory Beach Toddler Group: An informal playgroup on Castlegregory Beach. Wednesday's 2.15pm-3.30pm (weather permitting).

Whist: Every Thursday evening in the Clubrooms from 8pm. Newcomers and Learners welcome.

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.
