The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 19th April will be the American political docudrama Truth. The film tells the story of The Killian Documents controversy (a.k.a. “Rathergate”) in the days leading up to the 2004 US presidential election. Veteran newscaster Dan Rather and CBS News head Mary Mapes choose to air a segment exposing how President Bush avoided being drafted to Vietnam through his father’s political advantages. Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford give standout performances in this captivating inside look to the world of television news and US politics. The following week on Tuesday 26th April the feature will be Trumbo. In 1947, Dalton Trumbo (Bryan Cranston) was Hollywood’s top screenwriter until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs. The film recounts how Dalton used words and wit to win two Academy Awards and expose the absurdity and injustice of the blacklist, which entangled everyone from gossip columnist Hedda Hopper (Helen Mirren) to John Wayne and Kirk Douglas. Trumbo serves as an honourable and well-acted tribute to a brilliant writer’s principled stand. 4 West Kerry Live

Féile na Bealtaine
Lá na bPáistí in the Town Park on the Saturday is an annual highpoint.
This year’s Féile na Bealtaine will take place from Thursday 28th April to Monday 2nd May in West Kerry with a programme of events as rich and as varied as we have come to expect. Since its inception over 20 years ago this annual celebration of culture and art has become one of the highlights of the year in Corca Dhuibhne and has been wholeheartedly embraced and always eagerly anticipated by the whole community. The musical lineup is as eclectic as ever. Four piece electronic festival and dancefloor favourites, Le Galaxie bring their stomping dancefloor grooves to the Conair festival tent. Proving that there’s more to Leicester than Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy, Mahalia brings her mesmerising acoustic soul to St James’ Church, a venue she held in thrall during Other Voices last December. The church will also host Declan O’ Rourke and Cavan’s Lisa O’Neill. Our own Pauline Scanlon will launch her new album Gossamer in the Brewery, Scandanavian ensemble The Engegard Quartet will play in the Díseart, there’ll be Hip Hop in the Court, drummers on the street, choral treats in the Skelligs , trad, folk, DJs and more. This year’s Féile will feature a very healthy spoken word element with award winning authors Kevin Barry and Dermot Bolger discussing their work in the Dingle Bookshop.Scotswoman Carol Anne Duffy (a British Poet Laureate no less!) will join classical jazz musician John Sampson in the Díseart.
Award winning plays Beowulf and Forgotten are sure to play to packed houses in Ionad and Bhlascaoid and The Phoenix Cinema repectively. An addition to this years festival will be the Tosta Village which will set up near the waterfront behind Garvey’s with a fantastic line-up of events. The project is a collaboration between cultural agents in several ‘smaller’ language communities of Europe’s Atlantic coast in Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, Fryslân, the Basque Country, Galicia and Ireland. It combines the promotion of artistic creation, the celebration of linguistic and cultural diversity and the balanced management of local languages in an international project. The Parade on the Sunday always attracts a huge crowd and is the culmination of months of work. Anyone wishing to walk with the parade is encouraged to dress up in accordance with the theme which this year is Artists and their Work/ Ealaíontóirí agus a gCuid Saothair. If you would like your face painted for the parade, please arrive at CBS from 10.45am. Another parade of sorts will take place on Saturday evening from 8.30pm (Oiche Bhealtaine) when a collection of masked mummers, strawboys and Otherworld creatures will banish the darkness with ancient music and wild dance and will lead followers from the Courthouse to a ceremonial location to celebrate the coming of summer. Full details at www.feilenabealtaine.ie The festival office is located in the Rice House on Green Street. Your féile needs YOU!!! Join us this Friday, Saturday or Sunday, April 15th to 17th in a workgang to transform the building into a festival office, and the town into a party. We are looking for anyone even a little bit arty, anyone good with a drill, or anyone good at holding a ladder and are meeting from Friday 2pm at Rice House - email info@feilenabealtaine.ie if you are interested in coming along.
For the year that’s in it the festival will have a series of talks and discussions that will look at how various aspects of Irish life have developed over the past 100 years since the Rising. The talks will focus on poetry, religion, politics, food and Ireland’s intellectual heritage with a number of well known figures in each discipline. Children are very well catered for with numerous events taking place,

Pan Fried Cod, Spinach, Quinoa and Cauliflower, Lemon and thyme dressing Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School The following is a dish, which I recently cooked at a cookery demonstration at the Health and Wellness Event in Garvey’s SuperValu. Well done to all involved throughout the day to help promote health and wellness and raise some money for Cuan Counselling. I have put this recipe together as a healthy dish. Sometime when we think of healthy food we think of it as something boring and without flavour. I always feel there is no point cooking anything unless it has loads of flavour. Keep it simple and well seasoned. And remember, anything you cook at home will be far healthier than processed food or even ready to go meals. If you haven’t tried quinoa or believe it is just for salads then it is worth trying in a recipe like this. Once the quinoa is cooked lemon will give it a nice flavour to compliment the fish. Serves 4
rapeseed oil into the pan once it’s hot, season the fish now with salt and pepper and lay the fish fillets in the pan, skin side down. Fry until the skin is golden and crisp, and the fillets are cooked two-thirds of the way through. Turn the fish over and cook the flesh side for another 2 minutes or so. Once you feel the fish is almost cooked, turn off the heat and allow the fish to rest in the pan. This time will give you enough time to cook the spinach. Wash the spinach and keep a little water on them. Heat a pan, if there are any stalks from the spinach, add them to the pan first with a little water, and give them a minute or so. Then add the leaves and toss them in the pan for a minute or two until they have wilted. Season with some salt and pepper. To serve Warm the quinoa and cauliflower and place it in the centre of the plate with some of the spinach beside it, place the fish on top, skin side up and drizzle with some dressing.
Ingredients 4 Pieces of Cod (between 160g -200g each) 150g Red Quinoa 150ml Vegetable Stock ½ Head cauliflower, cut into very small pieces or pulsed in a food processor 150g Spinach washed ½ Lemon zested and juiced Some thyme leaves picked and chopped 25ml Sherry vinegar
Following its phenomenal success last year, the second Darkness into Light Walk/Run will take place in Dingle May 7th.A small sacrifice for a great cause.
Salt and pepper

Farming News Louis Murchan BPS and ANC Applications continue Farmers receiving a DAFM letter stating that they must register on-line if they are GLAS participants need not worry. The fact that they joined GLAS means that they were registered by their advisor at that time. All BPS applications must be made online by 2018. New EU Commission regulations will see all Basic Payment Scheme applications made online by 2018. The European Commission regulation sets out specific requirements with regard to geo-spatial (online) aid applications for the Basic Payment Schemes. The regulation sets out that Member States shall provide for geo-spatial (online) applications, and that 75% of beneficiaries in 2017 and all beneficiaries in 2018 must apply online. In order to ensure that these regulatory requirements are met, the Department has been moving certain categories of farmers to online application in 2015 and 2016. This process will continue as we move towards the 2018 regulatory target. Within this context, the Department has put in place a rigorous system of support for online applicants via a dedicated helpdesk, and more targeted supports will be in place as the process continues to ensure access to the Basic Payment Scheme is not impeded. According to the Minister, online application involves a range of advantages for farmers, which will help to ensure the continued efficient and effective delivery of these vital payments. Online applications will increase again this year and should exceed 100,000, as farmers that have applied for GLAS have already used the online system. An additional 4,600 farmers in GLAS will be moving from a manual to an online application for BPS. Last year, some 93,000 farmers or 70% of all applicants, made their application online. There are approximately 40,000 farmers still using manual applications. Benefits of using the online system are considerable and include: - Earlier application date -Pre-checking - Instant confirmation of receipt of application - Reduced application errors - Greater accuracy - Online maps - Text alert from the Department - Payment on time within deadlines - Online linkage to other schemes such as GLAS. €20 Million in Annual Premium Payments to Forest Owners DAFM has announced that the annual tax-free forestry premium payments for 2016 will be issued in the coming days, and indicated that payments should have reached bank accounts week beginning Monday 11 April. The payments currently being issued are to those forest owners who applied through the paper-based system. This year, €19.76 million in respect of some 6,600 such applications is being paid in this week’s bulk payment run, bringing the total value of forestry premium paid so far this year to almost €55 million. The Department will continue to process forestry premium applications as they are received throughout the year, with the total paid in forest premiums each year averaging just over €75 million. Forest premiums are payable annually under the Afforestation Grant and Premium Scheme, which also provides grants to landowners to cover the cost of planting new forests. The Scheme supports the planting of different types of forests ranging from commercial forests for timber production to native woodlands planted for conservation purposes. Forest owners, who are still eligible for forest premiums on their plantations, may apply for the payment of the annual premium online, through the Department’s Online Services (www.agfood.ie), or by completion and return of the Application for Annual Forest Premium (Form 4). To date, almost 9,000 online forestry premium applications, valued at nearly €35 million, have been processed and paid through the Department’s online services. A new Afforestation Grant and Premium Scheme came into operation on 1st January 2015 under the Forestry Programme 2014-2020. In addition to the availability of establishment grants, an annual forestry premium of up to €635 per hectare for 15 years is available under the Scheme. The Department’s forestry online services now facilitate payment to forestry applicants who use the Integrated Forest Information System (IFORIS) over the Internet. The IFORIS computer system was developed by the Forest Service for the processing of forestry pre-approval, grant and premium applications. The system was subsequently expanded to IFORIS Internet (iNet) to provide facilities to forestry companies to submit and manage their clients’ forestry scheme applications online. 12 West Kerry Live
New Traditional Farm Buildings Grants for GLAS Farmers The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney TD, has announced a new scheme to grant-aid the conservation of traditional farm buildings on GLAS farms. The new scheme builds upon the success of the Traditional Farm Buildings Grant Scheme which operated under REPS 4 from 2007 to 2013, and which ensured that more than 350 traditional farm buildings throughout Ireland were conserved. These building have been an integral part of our agricultural heritage for generations, and their contribution to the character and beauty of the Irish landscape cannot be overstated, As many as possible of these buildings should be conserved and returned to practical agricultural use. Grants will be made available to GLAS participants to carry out approved conservation works to traditional farm buildings, including roofs, outside surface of walls, windows and doors. Grants will also be available for other related structures such as historic yard surfaces and landscape features around the farmyard such as walls, gate pillars and gates. To be eligible for the scheme, buildings and other related structure must have architectural or vernacular heritage character and make a contribution to their setting. Grants awarded will not exceed 75% of the cost of the works with a maximum grant of €25,000 and a minimum grant of €4,000 being made. The first tranche opens immediately and completed application forms must be returned to the Heritage Council before 5pm on Friday 6th May 2016. Further applications will be invited at regular intervals throughout the Programming period to end December 2020. The application form and all other documents on the new GLAS Traditional Farm Building Scheme can be downloaded from the Heritage Council website www.heritagecouncil.ie or by contacting the Heritage Council directly at Church Lane, Kilkenny. Phone 056 777 0777. Third tranche of TAMS II farm building grants The third tranche of TAMS II is now open to applications with grant aid available for a host of on-farm investments. TAMS provides grant aid of 40% for certain on-farm capital investments – 60% in the case of those who qualify as ‘Young Farmers’. The current tranche of TAMS closed on March 25, and the next opened for applications on March 26. Around 2,500 farmers have so far applied to TAMS with dairy investments accounting for the majority of applications to date. Unfortunately, the next tranche of TAMS II won’t now include sheep fencing and grain storage, according to the Department of Agriculture. It also confirmed to Agriland that it is awaiting confirmation from the Commission on the inclusion of sheep fencing as an investment item and the provision of a dedicated Tillage Scheme in TAMS II to include investment in grain stores. However, the Department confirmed that sheep fencing and grain stores will not be included in Tranche 3 of TAMS II. The new TAMS measure will make €395m available to Irish farmers for investing in on-farm infrastructure, facilities and equipment. All TAMS schemes have been opened and the applications received under the first tranches of both the Young Farmer Capital Investment Scheme and the Dairy Equipment Scheme are now being processed. TAMS III stands for the Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme. It compromises of six individual schemes. 1.Young Farmer Capital Investment Scheme (YFCIS). 2.Dairy Equipment Scheme (DES). 3.Organic Capital Investment Scheme (OCIS). 4.Low Emission Slurry Spreading Equipment Scheme (LESS). 5.Pig and Poultry Investment Scheme (PPIS). 6.Animal Welfare Safety and Nutrient Storage Scheme (AWNSS). Thousands of farmers still waiting for approvals for farm building investments under the first tranche of the TAMS II scheme. Much of the delay in the issuing of approvals by the Department of Agriculture appears to stem from difficulties surrounding the IT system developed for the TAMS II scheme. All applications for grant aid under the scheme must be completed online. However, this week Department spokesperson has told Agriland.ie that it is anticipated that the TAMS IT approval system to facilitate the finalisation of all approvals will be in place at the end of March. All outstanding approvals will then commence with a view to payments for approved investments commencing in June. Louis Murchan: 087-2857938

Excerpts From A Dingle Diary
Monday, April 21.
By Ted Creedon Tuesday, April 8, 1986. Rang Maurice O’Connor at Galvins Travel in John Street about ferry costs to Brittany. The minimum cost will be £350 without the car or cabin. Will take the car and book a cabin too. American actor Clint Eastwood was elected mayor of the town of Carmel in California. Will he follow Reagan to the White House? A bomb exploded in a Berlin disco over the weekend. The place is popular with American servicemen and scores of them were injured. Two people were reported killed.
The council have begun widening the main road at the bad bend near the racecourse at Ballintaggart. The old Tralee and Dingle railway line used to run along that stretch of ground up to 1953 when the last train passed there. I wonder when the actual rails were removed. The present widening is being done by Michael Kavanagh who has become very big in the heavy machinery business in recent years. It will be great to have this most dangerous bend made safe for motorists. Many were the times that I attended serious accidents there. I believe there were 14 serious accidents over the past ten years. They were usually caused when cars came around the bend too fast from the Dingle side and ran head-on into oncoming traffic or turned over because of speed.. Surprised the hear of the death of Barbara Joyce today. She was living in Minard and a regular contributor to The Kingdom newspaper. She was always on about cats - how to treat them etc and had many cats in her home. She was only about 50.

Still no word on the fate or whereabouts of Jennifer Guinness who was kidnapped last Tuesday from her home in Howth. She is married to a member of the brewing family. A ransom of £2 million has been demanded. The family are probably negotiating her release. A major scandal has erupted in Italy over wine that has been contaminated with methanol resulting in at least 17 deaths and many people hospitalised.

Monday April 14. Sent off a cheque for £78 to pay for car tax for the next six months. Why do we continue to pay road tax when the roads are in such a state of disrepair? We pay up like sheep when a union of motorists could be the most powerful lobby in the country. The Americans carried out another underground nuclear test last week, the ninth since last summer, in the Nevada desert. Now the Russians are saying they’ll end their moratorium on nuclear testing.
Tuesday, April 15. Wet, windy and very wintery weather these days. The main news today is all about the American attacks on Lybia. President Reagan is being condemned by everyone except Maggie Thatcher. The attack force left from U.K. bases. It’s been reported that over 90 people died in Bangladesh during a hailstone storm - hailstones weighed over two pounds or one kilo.
Thursday, April 17. The hills and mountains are covered in snow today. It’s cool and sunny but temperatures well below normal for April and, according to the weather people this is the worst April weather for 70 years.

Jennifer Guinness was rescued by gardaí from a house in Ballsbridge, Dublin. She said she had been moved to several locations over the past eight days. Her family said the £2 million ransom demand was not paid. In another kidnapping incident British journalist John McCarthy has been abducted in Beirut. This follows the abduction of Belfast man Brian Keenan in the city last week. 14 West Kerry Live

Annascaul had a very convincing win over Ballydonoghue on Sunday last in Paddy Kennedy Memorial Park, Annascaul. Ballydonoghue’s main scorer Paul Kennelly opened the scoring four minutes in but the visitors were unable to convert again until the second quarter due to the work rate of Annascaul’s back line. Annascaul’s James Crean converted two consecutive points within the first ten minutes, and early in the second quarter he found his brother Aidan who landed the ball in the back of the net. It wasn’t until the twenty third minute that saw Ballydonoghue’s Paul Kennelly convert two points from awarded frees and his team mate Dara Sheehy dropped the ball in high but to no avail, as it was swept away once again by Annascaul’s back line. The Crean brothers worked well up front and added another goal to Annascaul’s tally, leaving the half time score 2-04 to 0-03 in favour of the home side. After the break, Ballydonoghue’s Paul Kennelly was eager for a score with a great attempt on goal only to be saved by Annascaul’s Tommy Pierce. Kennelly converted two frees shortly after to add to the board and one from Jack Gogarty. Jason Hickson added two of his own. Late in the third quarter, Ballydonoghue dug deep when Jack Foley landed the ball in the net, reducing the margin to one kick of the ball. With both teams answering with a point apiece ending the quarter 2-07 to 1-07 to Annascaul’s advantage. With the game coming to an end, once again Ballydonoghue were hungry for the net with two missed opportunities from Dara Sheehy and Diarmuid Behan- but it wasn’t to be. Annascaul’s Jason Hickson’s point kicking was the key to a home win. Final score Annascaul 2-14 Ballydonoghue 1-07. Annascaul’s Team: Tommy Pierce, Eoin Curry, Eoghan O’Neill, Colm Barry, Daniel O’ Connell, Andrew Finn, Gerard Farrelly, Niall McKenna, Emmet Kennedy, Aidan Crean (2-03), James Crean (0-04), Eamonn

Scéala ón Díseart Pádraig Ó Fiannachta Bhí deacrachtaí go leor agam le déanaí. Yes with no sunshine, Aerobics. you ask how! For more information call Jackie Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost. Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.
A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of enContact: Eamonn - 087-6720848 ergy, a system can payDowd for itself in 5 to 10 years. eamonndowd@hotmail.com facebook/dowdyman

Crossing The Irish Sea - By Kayak
Around €4,500 has been raised so far through the website, mainly for the Manchester-based charity and he's hoping for increased donations to Dingle Camphill in the coming weeks.
Thorough Introduction to MINDFULNESS MEDITATION at Kalyana Centre Dingle Alan Creedon, from Dingle, is preparing to cross the Irish Sea by kayak as part of his venture to raise money for charity in memory of his sister Aoife who died in 2011. Alan lives in Manchester with his wife Beth and three year-old daughter Rae. "I decided to walk from Manchester to Dingle as a fitting tribute to Aoife, who couldn't walk, talk or communicate. But I wasn't comfortable with the idea of crossing the Irish Sea by ferry. It just wasn't demanding enough," he told West & Mid Kerry Live this week.
5 Thursday evenings 7.00 – 8.30 pm Starting April 28th , Fee €85. To sign up text Eva at 087 271 2662
He was contacted by Mike Alexander, a Senior Instructor with The Outward Bound Trust in Britain, who read about the project on the website, www.walkforaoife.com. Mike offered to take Alan across the Irish Sea in a double sea kayak. "This is exactly what I was waiting for. The perfect challenge even though I never paddled a kayak before but I've been training in Wales with Mike and really looking forward to heading off from Holyhead to Dublin in mid-May," he said. The sea kayak will have VHF radio for contacting the coastguard if needed and GPS tracking. The crossing is expected to take up to 20 hours, depending on weather conditions. But before that 112km sea crossing he plans to walk the 200km from his Manchester home to Holyhead and then walk the 350km from Dublin to Dingle. He estimates it will take about four weeks to complete the challenge.

"I'm raising funds for two charities. Manchester Mind, who cater for young people and young adults with mental health problems and the Camphill Community in Dingle who care for people with special needs on their farm," Alan explained.

Dingle Book Launch Carl O’Flaherty will launch his collection of stories about Dingle and his times growing up in the family bar on Sunday May 1st at 5pm. The launch will take place, appropriately enough, in O’Flaherty’s Bar. In the book Carl shares his memories of Dingle and its people: its butchers, bakers, carpenters and tailors; stories of bonfires, regattas, races and wren’s days; Dingle characters, rambles to the lighthouse and times he spent in that great Dingle institution - The Temperance Hall as well as pieces on Lispole and The Gaeltacht. With stories of processions, football matches, soapbox derbies and carnival queens that kindle fond memories of the Dingle of his youth. Winners at the Temperance Hall Table Tennis Tournament back in the day. (L-R): Ambrose O’Connor, Patrick Garvey, John Benny Moriarty, Kevin O’Connor,
Camphill News Betsie Konink On this beautiful Monday it is hard to sit in the office and write a community update. We would so much wish to say that we are finally moving into the new properties; the house on the land and the houses in town, but we are still waiting for HIQA to come and inspect and register these new places. We certainly have to learn to be patient and that is not always easy. In the meantime we enjoy the good weather, are busy in the garden and around the new house, grouting the mosaics in the foot paths and landscaping the gardens and community areas. On the fundraising front there is a lot happening. Marian O’Neil organised a very successful Bingo evening in Ballydavid. €1,000 was raised that evening a big thank you to all of you who supported this event. On the 30th of April we will be catering again for the annual cycle challenge and on the 6th of May Alan Creedon starts his Charity walk from Manchester to Dingle. You can follow him on his website www.walkforaoife.com . He will be kayaking over the Irish Sea around the 12th of May. Let’s hope for good weather at that time. Then on the 13th of May there will be a very special evening with a dinner and music in the Skellig hotel. This evening will be organised by the Rotary club and will have the Easter Rising as a theme. And at the end of May there will be the Cycle event in Cloghane… We are very grateful for all this support and really hope that many of you can come to our OPEN DAY on the 12th of June and see what all has been done with the monies raised. Open day will also be the day for the official opening of the new house.
Annascaul Singing Club Bert McCann Well, the latest gathering at the Annascaul Singing Club was a rip-roaring night. We were invited to be part of the village's commemoration of the Rising and folk flocked to Patcheen's pub to take part. We had songs of triumph, songs of sadness and songs of peace too. It was one of our busiest nights ever, and on Thursday 21st at 9pm we'll be giving it a lash once more. So, bring a song with you to Patcheen's on Annascaul's Main Street and you'll be made welcome. If you prefer to listen the failte will be just as warm. As always it's free and it's fun 20 West Kerry Live

One individual or group we will not welcome back to Dingle though are the graffiti artists who did so much damage at 10 different locations on a Monday night recently. But for the swift action of some property owners and Gene Courtney of our Tidy Towns Group the areas most affected would look much worse than at present. Somebody must have heard or seen something on that Monday night so please pass on any information in confidence to the Gardai to deter such behaviour from escalating in our town. TIDY TOWNS WORK EVENINGS continue on Tuesdays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7p.m. If that time is not suitable contact either Patrick Sheehy, Gene Courtney or Risteard Mac Liam to arrange other times or places to help present our town as best we can. BIGI LINN.
On reviewing the list of activities that are scheduled to take place in the area over the next few months I certainly think that no matter what ones interests are everybody should find some event or events to attend or support or fully participate in. Full details of all events are listed in various places throughout this edition. So get reading, mark the diary and get involved. We are blessed to live in such a wonderful safe area here in Chorca Dhuibhne but its up to each and every one of us to look after it. Dingle Historical Society presents
Fishing for a Living in the Age of Oars & Sail: 19th century Dingle and south-west Ireland An illustrated lecture by John Roney, Professor of European History, Sacred Heart University, Connecticut
Dingle Benners Hotel, Main Street, Dingle Thursday, April 21st, 8.00pm All welcome - Fáilte roimh cách - Visitors welcome
Fishing in Dingle existed for centuries, but small boats and rough seas limited the potential for any substantial commercial value. While Britain promised to invest in fisheries in several Acts, little was done. The famine (1845-1853), further reduced fishing. William Andrews established the Royal Irish Fishing Company in Dingle and introduced trawling. This led to a controversy between older farmer-fishermen and newer commercial fishermen. Eventually trawling became recognized as an efficient means to catch fish with greater scientific knowledge of fish and fishing, and better vessels. This lecture will show the ups and downs of establishing fishing in Dingle that led to its success by 1900. Dr. John B. Roney is Professor of European History at Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, Connecticut. He also teaches in the Dingle campus since 2004. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. His current research is on the history of fishing and fisheries in the south-west of Ireland in the nineteenth century. His recent publications include: Landscape of Promise and Ruin: Culture, Identity and Reality in the Irish West, 1830-1930, edited by John B. Roney & Irene Whelan. Newcastle upon Tyne, UK: Cambridge Scholars Publishing, forthcoming 2016. He has contributed a chapter to "Negotiating the Middle Ground: Thomas Moore on Religion and Irish Independence". In Representing Irish religious histories: historiography, ideology, and practice. Edited by Jacqueline Hill and Mary Ann Lyons. London: Palgrave Macmillan Publishers, forthcoming 2016.

Greta’s Herbs
that a belly full of nectar will fuel a 40 minute flight.
Greta McCarthy, O’Brien Bee-loving Plants My fascination with bees is growing as I study the plant life which sustains them. Their decline has been caused by many factors. I think the decimation of our hedgerows where once an abundance of primrose, bluebell, fuchsia and gorse grew as well as the use of chemicals to eradicate lawn weeds such as dandelion and clover has wiped out some of their essential food supplies. This is one reason I love wild gardening because leaving wild flowers and native species to thrive and re-seed is vital to preserve our bees and butterflies. However, if you prefer the more formal look, with a well-manicured lawn you can still plant your borders with decorative bee plants such as Verbena bonariensis, Antirrhinums, Solidago, Buddleia, Hydrangea and Sweet Williams. There are many more bee-loving varieties I will not get to mention! Window boxes planted with crocus, heather and snowdrops will provide a late winter menu for early foraging bees! Another interesting fact is bees never see red - it is not part of their colour spectrum so planting big pots of garish red geraniums just won’t encourage them to suck up. They love the blue of forget-me-nots the yellow of gorse and the purple of bugle (Ajuga reptans). Honey bees have shorter tongues than bumble bees so prefer open flowers such as Limnanthes douglasii (poached egg) or ox-eye daisy. Simple, single blooms rather than fancy double or pompon varieties are better as they allow easy access to the nectar. Sometimes, in desperation our bees have to drill holes at the base of certain flowers to extract their food. This is making life’s workload harder for them so plant your garden with free seeding Nasturtiums, Phacelia and Borage along with single hollyhocks and sweet pea. Solitary bumble bees will enjoy drinking from the funnels of foxglove, honeysuckle and comfrey. I once heard
THE
Certain bees carry baskets on their hind legs to carry pollen back to the hive to feed the baby larvae. This rich food is another vital component of their diet. Our interference in trying to design nature has not always gone down well with the bee population. Many fancy hybrids and cultivars do not produce pollen: this is another factor to consider when planting a bee friendly garden. Plants with pollen aplenty include pussy willow, crab apple, Cotoneaster, Escallonia as well as many of the others already mentioned. Allowing a patch of your garden to go wild or sowing it with wild flowers is another way to attract bees and if you want more butterflies leave a clump of stinging nettles! Herbs as a group provide a generous bounty for hungry bees. High in volatile oils their intoxicating aromas attract a buzzing orchestra. Top of the list are thymes, hyssop, mints lavenders, oregano, sage and rosemary! If we lose our bees the natural buzz in our gardens diminishes. Plant life is symbiotically connected and sustained by bee pollination. If we fail to provide adequate food sources for our bees our own food sources in turn are threatened. Bees are responsible for a large amount of foods we consume. Aside from honey they also provide a wonderful selection of other materials such as royal jelly, bee wax, propolis and venom. We must not under estimate the work they do: a bee can visit thousands of flowers in a day! This year creating a bee and butterfly haven should be the bee-all and end all of every garden! Greta’s Herbs now on sale at the following outlets: Foxy Johns, Dingle, Keanes Garage, Lispole, O Donnells Shop, Annascaul, Miltown Organic Store and Mace Camp. Orders taken now! Supporting Pre-School Children With Bed Time Issues
Ideally turn off the telly. Instead play some calm music this will call down your child’s brain activity and help reduce any anxiety he or she may feel about going to bed. You too will gain from this! Next have a picture of a child in their pyjamas on the story board.
Anne Healy
Try lighting a candle and maybe burn some nice lavender oil. If you’re thinking where will I get time for all that maybe just pick one thing from my suggestions that seems okay for you to do. Again put something that represents this part of the routine in your story board… you could call this the story about getting ready for bed. Next have a picture of somebody brushing their teeth. Then a picture of a bed and a child listening to a story. Say after the story it will be time go to sleep and you will hear me in the sitting room, or whatever room you will be in and I will be thinking of you. Tell your child you will be checking up to make sure that they are sleeping and if they wake up you know that they will stay in bed as they know you are listening out for them and keeping them safe. Next a picture of a child cuddled up asleep And finally ... A picture of the morning as a child gets out of bed. It is likely they will get out of bed for a few nights but keep up the same routine, just bring them back to bed tuck them in and remind them you can hear them in their bedroom and you are keeping them safe. The above suggestions are for children that have common bedtime issues. For some children the reason they may be coming down to you is due to some concerns or fears they may have. This is something you will need to explore with your child or seek advice from a friend or health care professional.
Cartún: Dohmnall Ó Bric Many parents I have met over the years have come to dread night times and get anxious when their children are preparing for bed. Usually the problem lies in trying to get the children to stay in bed. When we discuss what children get out of what happens at night time it may be the attention they get, but of course it often winds up in negative attention as parents get stressed in trying to get their child to stay in bed. I always ask parents about the night time routine. It usually seems great, for example the child has a drink, and a snack, brushed their teeth got into their pyjamas and a story was read. They hugged the child goodnight, left on the lamp and went down stairs for a cuppa! But their child was on their heels, saying they were hungry and thirsty. They put them back up to bed but they would be down as fast as their mother or father. Parents have tried bribery, imposing limits, losing her tempers and at times they give in to their children. But none of these approaches work.
Anne Healy MA Play Therapist and Parent Adviser with over thirty years experience of working with parents and children. 087 2486421
So here is a plan that has helped parents to get their child to stay in their bed but it takes time so be patient! Plan for a Bedtime Routine Tell your child that you have come up with a plan to help them stay in her room at night. Acknowledge that he or she finds it difficult to stay in their room but it is your job as their mam or dad to make sure they get lots of sleep. The important thing for you the parent to remember is that your child will be able to stay in their room when he or she is ready. But it is essential to keep up the same routine each night until your child stays in their room. Tell your child that you know they like to hear your voice and to help them stay in bed you will put a baby monitor in their room, or call it whatever you like… maybe a little box that will help them hear you when you are in the sitting room. Do the test run with the monitor in the sitting room and their bedroom and let them hear you and you can say things like…. ‘Thinking of you in your bedroom and we are here keeping you safe’ Have a step by step routine so that your child can internalise what happens for the hours leading up to going to bed and what happens when she or he goes to bed. Get your child involved in his or her bedtime routine. For example get them to draw what happens about one hour before bedtime. On the story board sketch the following plan. About an hour before bedtime start ‘slowing ‘down the tempo in the house….. so your child and you might draw or find a picture in a book that represents something calming. 30 West Kerry Live

Pellegrini-Stieda Syndrome
ligament. Pellegrini syndrome can be the cause of knee stiffness. Pellegrini-Stieda disease is characterised by soft tissue oedema(swelling) followed by calcification of the swelling, on the medial side of the knee post trauma. This occurs gradually over a period of from 11 days to 6 weeks post trauma. A network of new bone formation around the periphery of the mass of the medial condoyle is seen at around 6 to 8 weeks.
Eddie O’ Grady
Pellegrini-Steida syndrome refers to the ossification(calcification) of the superior part of the medial collateral ligament of the knee. It can be difficult to assess correctly before radiological changes become apparent. It may result due to direct trauma, or less frequently, a grade II or III sprain to the medial collateral
medial collateral ligament attachment is warranted. Finally, if there is significant bone formation and persistent pain and stiffness, surgery may be necessary.
Pain and local swelling are the two first symptoms following the injury to the collateral ligament . With Pellegrini-Steida syndrome there will be no full recovery from this injury, yet there will be symptomatic improvement. The pain and disability increases after a few weeks or months. The knee becomes stiff with limitation of movement and pain over the medial side of the knee. The stiffness in the knee will mainly hamper the stretching of the knee and also make twisting of the knee rather difficult. Examination reveals marked restriction in joint range of motion with a tender lump in the proximal portion of the medial collateral ligament. Treatment involves active mobilisation of the knee joint i.e. physio. If pain still persists infiltration of a corticosteroid agent to the tender

Waiting for Orders Bert McCann As the centenary of the Easter Rising approaches it is maybe worth reflecting on the role played by what may or may not have been a forged document in pushing the rebel volunteers into action and how British ineptitude led to its own failure in nipping them in the bud. And indeed how near it came to the rising not happening at all. The Irish Volunteers had emerged as the result of a split in the National Volunteer organisation whose leadership supported Britain's role in WWI. The dissidents on the other hand saw the Anglo-Saxon pre-occupation with the world war as an opportunity and were determined to have an uprising before the conflict's end. Eoin MacNeill a founder of the Gaelic League and a republican activist, had for some time harboured misgivings about initiating an armed revolt. As leader of the Irish Volunteers his position was that rebellion should only follow attempts by the Crown to suppress or disarm them or to introduce conscription into the British army. Those conditions he felt would ensure popular Irish support. A spontaneous insurgency was out of the question. However MacNeill wasn't calling the shots. Whatever authority he aspired to had been subverted. Unknown to him, members of his headquarters staff, his officer cohort, had set up a parallel military committee within the Irish Republican Brotherhood the rival physical force organisation and had started building for the rising from that base. Subsequently, the dissidents, Pearse, McDonagh, McDermott, Plunkett, Clarke, Ceannt, were joined in their endeavour by James Connolly who brought the Irish Citizen Army aboard. It seems that the British were taken by surprise by the outbreak of hostilities in Dublin. In June 1916, a three person Royal Commission was appointed to review the causes of the Irish rebellion. It's report makes clear that the Crown forces had been aware of the potential for trouble. They could hardly have missed it, what with the rebels openly drilling, vehement oratory on street corners and the influx of weaponry into the country. Indeed on the 12th of April they had a report of a ship leaving Germany for Ireland accompanied by two Uboats. This was the Aud, carrying a ordnance for the soldiers of the republic. Information also reached the British that a rising could be expected on 'Easter eve'. Despite this plethora of intelligence it wasn't till the evening of the day before battle commenced that it was decided to arrest the republican leadership. They were spurred into action it seems by the theft of major gelignite caches from quarries around Dublin which were thought to have been lodged at Liberty Hall, the HQ of the ICA. This dovetailed with the release of the socalled Castle document. In a debate at a Dublin City Council meeting on the 19th of April, Alderman Thomas Kelly read from a circular that had been passed to him by the editor of New Ireland magazine. Published by someone named Little, who was
never subsequently identified, it included an extract from a document that was allegedly circulating at the British HQ in Dublin Castle. This detailed a multitude of repressive measures planned by the government to deal with the threat of militant republican action. It included mass arrests, shutting down Irish political and cultural organisations, confining the populace to their homes and the disarming of members of revolutionary organisations. Kelly stated that it was a strange official overreaction aimed at the inhabitants of 'the most peaceable city in Europe'. It was concluded that the document was a forgery, part of a setup designed by people unknown, to provoke the republicans. A second, more modern opinion of the Castle document offered by Charles Townshend, Professor of Modern History at Keele University, in History Ireland magazine suggests a different interpretation. That is, that the document was, at least in part, authentic, but had been copied and 'sexed up' by Joseph Plunkett, then circulated in order to bring Eoin MacNeill into line. MacNeill had confronted Pearse earlier in April about his behind-thedoor duplicity and had been somewhat mollified to hear of the imminent arrival of the Aud and it's cargo of matĂŠriel. But discouraged by the capture of Casement and the scuppering of the vessel by the British, and feeling that he had been deceived by Pearse and Plunkett he fell back on his former position. When Pearse sent out word around the country for volunteers to assemble in Dublin on Easter Sunday, 23th April for special manoeuvres, he confronted the conspirators. When it became apparent that this calling in of the committed was a guise to cover-up the start of the rising, he rushed out a countermanding order, standing down the whole undertaking and had it published in the Sunday Independent. Here in Kerry, a goodly contingent had marched into Tralee from the west, over Saturday night and bivouacked there. But the companies from Camp, Annascaul, Tralee, Castlegregory and Lispole were dispersed and sent back home on Monday morning to await further orders. The orders of course, never came. In Dublin, the leadership met on Sunday and postponed the action until noon on Easter Monday.
The rest, as they say, is history. Townshend questions whether the General Post Offfice was the best redoubt for the rebels rather than taking Dublin Castle. It is thought that the latter had only twenty-five of a garrison on duty on Easter Monday. Perhaps the British didn't take the volunteers seriously and preferred to be at the race meeting at Fairyhouse on that fateful day. Connolly is thought to have realised that a visible symbol of rebellion was as important as whether it succeeded or not. The GPO located in the centre of the city fitted that bill. Augustine Birrell the government Chief Secretary for Ireland carried the can for his failure to anticipate the rebel initiative and resigned his post. For those rebel leaders who were taken to Kilmainham after the republican surrender, their fate sadly was more final than the mere loss of a job.

Go with Your Gut – It’s more than a Feeling! Irene Ní Fhlannúra Cork University researchers just published a new study on gut microbiota (beneficial micro-organisms inhabiting the gut) and their influence on our thoughts, mood and behavior. In this ground-breaking research, they have discovered that our good bugs affect the structure and function of the brain “by regulating myelination, the process by which nerve fibres are insulated so that they can conduct impulses properly”. All brain function is expressed through the efficient delivery of information to and from the brain through these nerve fibres from every cell in the body. It is how messaging is communicated throughout the body, how we feel pain, how we move, how we think, how the body responds to stress or injury – all depends on these nerve fibres working and firing on all cylinders. In diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s, damage to the protective myelin coating of nerve fibres is at the root of cause. Now, researchers are discovering that not only is myelination involved in many more disorders of the nervous system including depression, anxiety and autism but that our own beneficial bacteria have a significant role to play in both the prevention and possible treatment of these disorders. This news comes amidst a mountain of research establishing the gut-brain connection and its involvement in the onset and progression of chronic illnesses.
to both parties. Our personal journey with them begins in the birth canal, swallowing and being swathed in beneficial bacteria as we leave the womb and enter the world. Natural birth is the ideal start for infants as they come in contact with the outside world for the very first time. From here, as we grow and develop so does our own microbiota grow, develop and establish themselves within our gut. Our changing environment as a growing toddler brings us into contact with more beneficial strains in the soil, from plants and from other humans allowing the variety and quantity of strains of microbiota to evolve as we do right through our lives. Advances in sanitation, nutrition, agriculture, water quality and medicine has dramatically altered the balance between good and bad microorganisms as well as the conditions that allow for the balance to be tipped in our favour. The overuse of antibacterial products being the most obvious, killing 99% of all known “germs” in our homes, on our skin, in our mouths, in our food, water and every other perceivable source of contact. Fresh, real food that once supported our gut and gut flora, has been replaced with chemical-laden fake foods, rancid oils and a diet full of refined sugars and processed food adding to the destruction of our microbiota and their environment. Add in the chemicals in our drinking water, increased pollution, alcohol and stress - the dwindling numbers of our good guys become unsurprisingly more evident. The monopoly of the pharmaceutical industry in both human and animal welfare has also been reckless in this regard. Not taking away from any benefits of modern drug therapy, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, anti-depressants, contraceptives, vaccines, antacids, steroids, nearly all pharmaceutical agents undermine the gut and its inhabitants one way or another.
Over 2000 years ago, Hippocrates, father of modern medicine, believed all disease begins in the gut and although we now know that not all disease, for example this does not apply to genetic disease, but the mounting evidence from research shows that all chronic, metabolic disease does, indeed, begin in the gut! This suggests that heart disease, cancers, diabetes, asthma and many more chronic illnesses arise from imbalances within the intestinal tract and from there cause the destruction of our health.
The research is still emerging and we must be hopeful that out of it comes a sustainable and effective healthcare model that promotes disease prevention, longevity and self-healing and that when intervention is required, our gut and its occupants are truly recognized for their integral role in the treatment, recovery and ultimately prevention of ill health.
While the researchers do what they do, what can we do to promote greater health and reduce the risk of chronic illness and degenerative disease? Establishing beneficial microbiota in our own bodies, creating an environment within us to allow them to colonize and flourish and maintaining healthy intestinal linings in which to contain the good guys are key areas within our control. Our beneficial microbes also exert an anti-inflammatory effect on cells, regulate the immune system as well as assisting us to digest and absorb dietary nutrients and minerals. Probiotics are microbes that can be ingested as a supplement to bestow similar health benefits, when our own guys need extra help. Prebiotics are a group of carbohydrates (insoluble fibres) that cannot be digested by ourselves but can encourage the growth, fitness and function of our microbiota.

County League Keel welcomed St. Pat's to Ross on Saturday looking for a third win in a row to keep them on top of Division 3 while the visitors were looking for their first win. The visitors dominated the opening quarter, building a 0-5 to 0-2 point lead through four Kieran Hurley frees and a point from Sean Dowling. Keel's 2 points coming from free's from Gary Sayers and Aaron Murphy. Two points by Sayers and a point by James Nagle leveled the game near half time but Kevin O'Shea gave St Pat's a 0-6 to 0-5 lead. Keel started the second half well and they built up a three point lead through two frees each by Sayers and Murphy. In the 19th minute a long ball caused confusion in the Keel defence and Kieran Hurley found himself free in front of the Stephen Cahillane and slotted home the equalizing goal. The remaining ten minutes was a cautious affair with neither team wanting to make the mistake that lost the game. In this spell Keel will rue two good goal chances that they missed. In the last minute Sayers pointed a free that looked like it would give Keel the win but in time added on Kieran Hurley pointed his fifth free to leave the final score Keel 0-10 St Pats 1-7 Keel: Stephen Cahillane, Emmet Ashe, Donal O'Neill, Gary Nagle, Colm O'Neill, Martin Burke, James Nagle(0-1), Thomas Ladden, Aaron Murphy(0-3 3f), Shane Prendiville, Gary Sayers(0-6 4f), Aaron

County Clean-Up
Saturday 2nd April saw the 5th Annual Kerry County Clean-up take place across the county facilitated by KWD Recycling with the help of Kerry County Council and tidy town committees in Kerry. 3,500 volunteers signed up to help out on the day. One of the most noticeable contributors to litter along the roads this year was plastic drinks bottles , drinks cans and Tea/Coffee cups which were constantly strewn all along our roads. There was also the usual crisp and chocolate bar wrappers, plastic bags and litter from take a ways, closer to towns and villages. Organisers would appeal to everyone in the County to stay conscious of how we dispose of our waste when driving, and ensure that all waste is disposed of at home and not along our roads. We must now turn the focus on keeping all our roads as clean as possible by being more careful and ensuring waste does not end up on the road in the first place for someone else to pick up.

*Mixed Waste is a combination of chocolate bar wrappers, crisp wrappers, small pieces of litter, coffee cup lids etc. As you can see the drinking bottles, coffee cups and cans combined to make up 70% with the remainder being what accompanies these products. Basically convenience products being bought in shops and thrown out when finished. 99% of what was found was recyclable so there really is no excuse, just laziness and lack of respect. 36 West Kerry Live

heavy conditions both sides did well to make a decent game of it given the weather. Castle played against the breeze in the first half but still created several excellent and clear cut chances but none of them were taken, while Park played on the break and through set pieces but never really troubled Declan Owens in the Castle goals. The sides remained scoreless at the break. Eventually midway through the second half Castle’s pressure finally told as top scorer Mícheál O Dowd continued his excellent run of form tapping in from close range after an Enda Whelan shot was parried. From here Castle were comfortable and were pressing for more goals when a long crossed ball inadvertently struck a Castle defenders arm and the Park were awarded a penalty which they scored leaving it at 1-1 with 15 to play. Castle were really unlucky on a number of occasions late on not to take all three points with Enda Whelan desperately unlucky to see a long range effort cannon back off the bar and Maurice Slattery also very nearly stole it at the death. However, it was not to be and the sides shared the points. Team: Declan Owens; Conor Shannon; Dylan Hoare; Shane Kenny; Maurice Slattery; Damien McMahon; Damien Finn; Conor Boden; Enda Whelan; Jason Griffin; Mícheál O Dowd. Ó Mhárthain.
Beidh ceist agam ort sna seachtainí rómhainn. 1. Cén ceannaire stáit a chuir cosc ar scatháin ina tigh nó pé áit a bhí sí ag cur fuithi, sa deich bliana déirneacha dá saol?
Breandán Mac Gearailt Pictúir Is dócha nách aon scéal nua é, ach táim ag scríobh leabhair agus níl aon teacht fós agam ar phictiúirí do thriúr fear ón áit. M’fhéidir go mbeadh ceann ag duine éigin- bheinn buíoch gan amhras. Fuaireadar bás timpeall na seascaidí-seachtóidí, trócaire ortha. Bhí an- aithne agam ar dhuine acu ach ní raibh ar an mbeirt eile seachas an trácht a bheadh i mbéal na ndaoine. Siad an triúr ná, Pádraig Ó Cinnéide, ós na Gorta Dubha, Liam ‘Kit’ Hurley, ó Bhaile na nGall, agus Pádraig Ó Máirtín, (Paddy Sheáin Mháirtín) ón mBaile Uachtarach Thoir, a phós isteach i mBaile uí Bhoithín.
2. An dtugais riamh fé ndeara cén taobh dá corp ar a gcodlaíonn an mhuc? 3. Cén t-ainmhí gur maith leis mariejuana a ithe agus ní dóigh liom go gcuireann sé móran do scaipeadh air? 4. Cén méid litir nó uimhir a bhuailfeadh ard clóscríobhnóir sa neomat? 5. Cén aois a bhí an Pápa ba óige riamh? 6. Cén chathair i Meiriceá is mó séipéil per capita? 7. Cén cogadh gur chéad úsaideach an Khaki? Bheadh ionadh ort. 8. Cén fhaid atá i néaróga an duine – dá mbeadh siad i ndiaidh a chéile?
Fuaireadar bás sna ‘70í’ nó mar sin. Trócaire ortha.
9. Cén chéad áit a bunaíodh an chéad fhórsa póilíní?
Gabhar Nach diail an neamhaistear a bhíonn ar dhaoine uaireannta. Cad é an gleo a bhí againn le déanaí, nár cheart an Gabhar a bheith in áirde ós chionn an Aonaigh mar bhíonn ar feadh na féile. Deirim-se leis na daoine seo go mbíonn cóir agus aire maidin agus oíche á chur ar an ngabhar san. Bíonn an thrí lá aige. An- ócáid ‘sea Aonach an Phoic i gCill Orglan. Gan an Gabhar ní bheadh spleodar ná cleachta ann. Bhíos ann roinnt uaireanta agus bhaineas an- shólás agus cleachta as an ócáid gach uair. Is deas an t-aitheantas é agus bhíonn an Gabhar go móralach maorga., ‘Sé Rí an Aonaigh agus na Féile. Seo é an gabhar atá i lár na Féile. Is ar a cuirtear cóir agus aire de ló is doíche. Cuireann sé go diail leis an bhféile. Tá súil agam go mbeidh sé á cheiliúradh céad bliain ó inniu. –Bíodh an Gabhar i lár an Aonaigh agus na Féile.
10. Nuair a bhíonn rogha na lúithchleasaithe ag rith sa rás 100M, cé méid uair a bhuaileann siad a gcos ar an dtalamh?
Caid Is dócha go ndéarfaidh cuid agaibh go bhfuil sibh bailithe dom shíor thrácht ar chaid. Is dócha gur é an t-am seo bliana séasúr na caide agus na hiomána agus bíonn cluichí breátha againn. Ainneoin na geasa a bhí ag fhearaibh Thír Eoghain ar Chiarraií tá san díobartha gan filleadh. Bhí árd chaid ann agus bhuamair. Is dóigh liom gur beag Ciarraíoch ná raibh sásta leis an mbua. Anois an Chraobh. Pé fliuch fuar é beam ag iarraidh ticéad do short éigin a aimsiú don gcraobh. Agus tá na mionúir ann chomh maith agus árd fhoireann acu. Bheadh deas dá mbeadh an t-adh leis na cailiní sa pheil ach ní raibh. Dhein an dá bháide bog tréis leath ama, coigstí do Chiarraí. D’imir Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh go diail; agus bailití timpeall uirthi aon uair a fhaigheadh si an chaid. Dá mbeadh socrú gur iad Louise agus Ni hUallachcáin a bheadh chun scórála dhéanfaidís rábach. Má chailleadar ní hí cailín cheolmhar Árd na Caithne fe ndear é. Tá súil agam go mbeidh Colm Geaney ar an bhfoireann an chéad lá eile agus gan amhras Marc ó Sé. Tá an- imreóirí coitianta ar an bpáirc agus ar an dtaobh líne, agus is maith ann a leithéidí, mar, Lyne Óg, Darran Ó Sullivan, Michael Geaney, na Gearaltaigh, Barry John, Sherwood,Tomás Breathnach, an fear faobhair, Pól ó Gealbháin. Tá liodán eile ann. Mar chearrbhach táim ag súil le bua. Bail ó Dhia ortha. Caid atá i gceann furmhór mhuintir an chontae seo fé láthair agus ná tair treasna ar aoinne acu. Gan dabht beidh na sraith chomórtais againn ach beam báite ag sacar agus rugar. Feachaim ar an dá cheann, ach níl an tsuim chéanna agam is a bheadh i gcaid nó iomáint fir agus mná. Tá scileanna, scóranna. sport agus dúchas meascaithe le cheile i gcroí aon Chiarraíoch le deáramh. Máchail. Bhíos ag éisteacht an oíche eile leis an dteilifís agus cé a bhí ag cur as ach George Hook agus é ag cur síos ar shaol gairmiúil an rugair agus gur cluiche ‘baolach’ é do aon imreóir ag áireamh daoine óga. Tá an iomad fuinnimh agus buillí í gceist agus measann sé go bhfuil díobháil fadhéarmach ag baint leis. ‘Is breá liom an chluiche’, ar sé,’ ach cuireann rugar an lae inniu eagla orm uaireanta’. Lean sé agus fear eile a bhí ag imirt rugair ina lá agus bhí sé ar aon fhocal le George. Bhí na daoine seo ag rá go neamh bhalbh go bhfuil an rugar mar tá, baolach do gach duine imríonn é mar go bhfaigheann siad móran buillí sa cheann. Mar sin is dócha gur cheart na rialacha a athrú agus gan aon imreóir óg nó foirfe, a bheith thíos le bascadh a thiocfadh leis níos déanaí ina saol. N’fheadar fé George. 40 West Kerry Live

Macallaí na Cásca 2 le
Antóin Ó Muircheartaigh ‘Dhearbhaigh Forógra na Cásca go mbainfí amach ‘sonas agus rathúnas an náisiúin iomláin’ agus go gcaithfí go comhionann le ‘clann uile an náisiúin’. Ó pholasaithe comeádach thús an tSaorstáit, tríd an gcosantachas agus oscailt an gheilleagair, go dtí an Tíogar Ceilteach, breathnaíonn an aiste seo ar fhorbairt eacnamaíocht na hÉireann. Bunaithe ar thaighde fhorleathan agus léargas grinn, ní hé gnáthléamh na n-eacnamaithe ar an scéal atá le fáil anseo.’ - Coiscéim
