Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone Tuesday Nights 8.45pm

The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 1st May will be the acclaimed Irish drama Michael Inside. Dafhyd Flynn

plays Michael McCrea, an impressionable eighteen-year-old who lives with his grandfather Francis (Lalor Roddy) in a Dublin housing estate, where he is caught holding a bag of drugs for his friend's older brother, and sentenced to three months in prison. Researched and workshopped with former prisoners from the Irish Prison Service's Pathways Programme, Michael Inside is an expression of many real-life experiences. The film takes a realistic look at the circumstances that lead to Michael's conviction, his time in prison, and how prison affects his thinking and behaviour. The following week on Tuesday 8th May the feature will be A Fantastic Woman. The film was selected as the Chilean entry for the Best Foreign Language Film where it won in the 90th Academy Awards. The film tells the story of Marina, a transgender woman who works as a waitress and moonlights as a nightclub singer. She is bowled over by the death of her older boyfriend. Subtle and tender, A Fantastic Woman handles its timely, sensitive subject matter with care.

Dingle Notes. Richie Williams COUNTY CLEAN UP. We had a fantastic response to the appeal for volunteers on County Cleanup Saturday with 20 people involved collecting 70 full bags of litter off the approach roads to town. Over 400 drink cans were also recycled along with 300 one liter vodka bottles the majority of which were found along a mile stretch of the byeroads west of Milltown Bridge. In fact a similar number were picked up in the same location over the past two years presumably dumped by the same people. Our sincere thanks to all who helped out not alone in Dingle but throughout the peninsula over the weekend and we hope that community spirit will continue as litter is a real blot on our unique scenery here in Corca Dhuibhne. FÉILE NA BEALTAINE. I have just seen a copy of the Féile programme and what a fantastic variety of indoor and outdoor events are planned starting early on Thursday May 3rd right through the Bank Holiday weekend. The Street Parade theme is Science and that starts at 12.30 from the Spa Road taking in the Mall, Main Street, Green Street, Holyground and home through the Mall again. Most of the schools in the area have been rehersing for months as have the float builders and it promises to be a really spectacular occasion again this year. The ticket office is at Moran's Garage and the organisers would appreciate some help at the various venues and volunteers should contact the office if they can spare some time to ensure the smooth presentation of all events. DARKNESS INTO LIGHT. The annual Darkness into Light Walk in aid of Pieta House will start at 4.15am on Saturday May 12th from the Marina Centre. Registration will be online only this year and the closing date is Wednesday 2nd as all vests are being posted direct to each entrant so no vest pick up available at the starting points nationwide. DEVELOPMENTS. One would be forgiven for thinking that the town is a big building site with so much development between new and existing 6 West Kerry Live

works taking place along all the streets at present not to mention the Harbour works and new link road site all buzzing with activity. Lets hope most of these works will be completed before the major tourist traffic hits the area or at least suspended during the peak summer months. BUSINESS. The Business Chamber appeal for the continued support of all local business outlets and services as it appears that a fall off in turnover is evident this year which may result in job losses or reduced hours for some employees. The after effects of the recession may be hitting hard in certain areas so we all can and must protect those valuable jobs for our own families , relatives, neighbours and friend. Yes everybodys euro when spent locally can go a long way to help in sustaining continued job security in the Peninsula. Is a scath a chéile a mhaireann muintir Corca Dhuibhne!!!. TIDY TOWNS. The GLAN Project which is being pioneered in the Peninsula was officially launched this week with both the Maharees and Camp joining with Dingle Town Business outlets in promoting the use of compostable and recyclable produce. Also the 2 minute daily street clean by business outlets in their own areas has started and we have noticed a great reduction in the amount of litter visable on all streets. Keep up the good work everybody. The Tidy Town Work Evenings continue on Mondays from the Bottle Bank at 7p.m. and everybody is welcome to join in. Slán Tamall.

The Importance Of Hearing Care

ask them to say things twice?

Consider all the sounds that you hear you every day - a child laughing, a bird singing, a friend chatting, or a great song on the radio - it is this symphony of sounds that makes life richer.

On the phone: Is it hard to hear the person on the other line and do you need to ask them to speak up?

Of all the five senses, our hearing is perhaps the most precious. If we lose it, we lose contact with the people we love and the world around us. You look after your teeth and eyes with regular check-ups – do the same for your ears!

At home: Do you turn up the volume on the TV, or radio, louder than others in the room prefer?

Outside: Do you have difficulty hearing sounds of nature, such as birds singing? So, what to do to take care of your hearing? Audiology Medical Services – Ireland’s leading independent audiology specialists – recommend that after the age of 45, you should have a hearing test every three years. Audiology Medical Services offer free adult hearing screening tests at all their clinics nationwide. Call 1800 501 501 for an appointment. Kay and Charles Lewis, Audiology Medical Services founders and directors.

Hearing is an easy thing to take for granted. Occasionally we might miss a few words, but in general we move around effortlessly in everyday life, talking to one another, chatting over the phone or listening to the TV, without paying it a second thought. Things are not nearly as easy with a hearing loss. When hearing loss occurs, a simple thing like following a conversation in a restaurant, or hearing the doorbell or telephone can become a real issue. You may start to experience all sorts of emotions – from worry to sadness and loneliness. You may also feel tired and irritable from having to concentrate just to hear what people are saying. Left unattended, hearing loss can ultimately lead to feelings of isolation and depression. Hearing loss can creep up so slowly that the person affected is often the last one to know. In fact, family members, friends or colleagues are likely to spot the problem before you do. Watch out for the common signs: At work: Do you find yourself straining to keep up with conversations in a busy office? Socially: Do you feel that people are mumbling and sometimes need to

Farming News

• If there are animals on the farm intended for sale, consider selling now where it makes economical sense to do so.

Grass & Fodder shortage

Nutritional Requirements of Ewes

The fodder crisis is still with us and doesn’t seem to have abated much. While some actions have been taken by some organisations and state bodies, some are also in denial as to their obligation to the farming community. Shooting the messanger will not put feed in the sheds, pits and troughs on the farmers of the country, especially in West Kerry. Some farmers still have silage in “semi-plentiful” supply, and anecdotal evidence suggests that those who have extra feed are good and generous, and are helping their neighbours. It is also time that those organisations with major now give back to their loyal members and supporters and row in, and help get fodder to where it is badly needed. Her following are a few scant notes and advice that will help those caught short, cope with their situation.

The main nutritional requirements of ewes with lambs at foot are energy and protein. When grass is plentiful, intake for ewes rearing twins will range from 2.4 kg grass DM from 1 week post lambing to 3.4 kg when the ewe is 7 weeks lambed.

Insufficient grass In early April the weather continues to cause problems. Grass growth is significantly behind what is normal for the time of year. Even following an improvement in the weather it will take some time for grass covers to recover to an acceptable level on most farms. If there is insufficient grass (less than 4.5 cm) during early lactation milk yield will be reduced and there is little option but to supplement the ewe. While ewes will be reasonably well fed when grass covers over 3.5 cm is available, it is important not to have ewes grazing down to this level for a long period without supplementation. Ewes will not be adequately fed and will lose condition quickly. Milk yield will also drop and lamb performance will suffer.

Creep Feeding Lambs:- Twin rearing ewes reach peak milk yield approximately 3 weeks post lambing and ewes with singles will peak at about 4 weeks. It is therefore important to try to meet nutritional requirements until these dates have passed. Otherwise lamb performance will suffer long term throughout the year. Once these dates have passed it is far more practical to offer supplementation in the form of creep feed to lambs if there is still a grass shortage. It is also worth noting that generally, at a similar level of nutrition, ewes rearing twins yield approximately 30 to 40% more milk than ewes rearing singles. Therefore, special care must be taken with twin rearing ewes. Creep Grazing (For lambs 6 weeks old or older):- Forward creep grazing older lambs ahead of ewes has the biggest advantage when grass supply is tight. It gives lambs priority to the scarce supply of high quality grass. Allowing lambs forward graze in front of ewes will improve lamb performance as it allows them priority access to the best grass before the ewes. The ewes can be maintained on tighter grass for a longer period. Their condition can be recovered later when grass supply becomes more plentiful. It has been shown to result in lambs being 2kgs heavier at weaning. Replacing the existing gate with a creep gate that has 225mm (9 inches) spacing enables lambs to graze in front of ewes.

Action required by farmers / Apply fertiliser

Concentrate Supplementation

Where no fertiliser has been applied, every effort should be made to apply nitrogen at the first available opportunity, when weather and ground conditions allow you to travel on land. The nitrogen will then be available to boost grass growth once soil temperatures increase. This will help rectify the situation once grass growth recovers. The fertiliser should be purchased in advance and be available in the yard for when it is needed. Apply at the rate of 29kg N per hectare (23 units per acre) for lowly stocked farms, (6 – 7 ewes/Ha), gradually increasing for higher stocking rates to double this when stocking rate is greater than 10 ewes per hectare. If your soil is deficient in P and K, consider using a compound fertiliser such as 1.5 bags of 18:6:12 for lowly stocked farms and increasing up to 2.5 bags on highly stocked farms.

The level of concentrate supplementation will depend on the level of grass available.

Assess Current Fodder Stocks:- Most sheep farms throughout the country also have cattle. When budgeting feed on the farm, all livestock should be included in the budget. Farmers are encouraged to: • Use hay / straw / concentrate feeds to stretch silage over the coming weeks. • While concentrate rations are expensive, they can replace silage as the main diet for ewes in late pregnancy and early lactation. • Care must when feeding high levels of meals to avoid acidosis. Adequate trough space must be provided as well as a constant supply of clean water. • Feeding 2-3 kg of meals to cattle will save 30-40% on silage demand from the cattle but access to the silage must be restricted for this to work. If offering restricted silage to cattle, it is critical that all cattle in a pen can eat at the same time therefore adequate space must be provided to allow all cattle eat at the same time. • Check the value of feeds with the local Teagasc adviser, before purchase. This is particularly important for forages. Extra steps to be taken • While waiting for grass supply to recover, on farms where there is a shortage of fodder, feeding additional concentrates is necessary • If cash flow is tight, farmers should talk to your local Credit Union, bank, local adviser or merchant. 12 West Kerry Live

Water With the extra dry feed being offered to sheep, make sure to supply ad lib access to clean fresh water at all times. Ewes in early lactation need up to 10 litres per day. There will be very little moisture in dry feed. Scarce grass Every farm will be different so it is important to get specific advice. However, it should be useful to bear a few points in mind. •

The level of available grass varies from farm to farm.

• tle.

Sheep are able to graze much tighter to the ground than cat-

• During very dry weather, grass dry matter is much higher than under normal weather conditions. Furthermore, while grass might be scarce, grazing conditions are good in dry conditions. This results in very little wastage of grass. Therefore, intake may be much higher from grazed grass than may seem obvious. Grass 3.5 to 4.5 cm:- When grass is in the range of 3.5 to 4.5 cm, sheep will be somewhat restricted. When ewes are in good condition and access to this type of grass is over a short period of time no supplementation is required. The ewes may be allowed milk off their back, lose some condition and therefore no concentrates are required. However, ewes in poor condition (CS < 2.5) should be supplemented. Furthermore, if ewes, even in good condition, are being grazed on this pasture over a prolonged period, such as a week or more, some level of supplementation is advisable. Grass height 2.5 to 3.5 cm:- When grass height is in the range of 2.5 to 3.5 cm intake will be adversely affected. It will be approximately one third of normal intake required. As the overall volume of concentrates is increased, the protein percentage can be reduced to supply the required level of crude protein. If ewes are in good condition, they may be allowed milk off their back, lose some condition and therefore reduce concentrates required. However, if ewes are already in poor condition, this is not recommended and will not work. No grass (< 2.5 cm):- If grass heights are below 2.5 cm, sheep will be able to graze little or no grass (i.e. no grass available for grazing). Therefore, concentrate levels should be increased by approximately

1 kg concentrates for the first 3 to 5 weeks of lactation or until grass becomes available. Some roughage, even if poor quality should be offered to help prevent digestive upsets and to fill appetite. This is also required by young lambs to help rumen development. This will also occur if grass is covered in a heavy fall of snow. Particular care is required in such circumstances. The roughage then becomes even more important. Giving high levels of concentrates when ewes are not used to eating large volumes will lead to digestive upsets. Changes to the diet should be made gradually BPS 2018 This is just another kindly reminder that all farmers must submit a BPS application before 15th May next. Time is passing quickly, and this must be done electronically, or on-line. Those who haven’t registered online, either with an advisor or set up their own online account, need to move quickly. The deadline is fast approaching, and no paper applications will be accepted from this year onwards. So, get moving, make that call and get your BPS submitted online now.

Generation S.T.E.M Timothy McGrath

Colm Cooper and James O’Donoghue, Kerry GAA, are my business Brand Ambassadors. They are all for supporting & encouraging the youth of Ireland to get involved with S.T.E.M.

My name is Timothy McGrath and I am a Transition Year student in Killorglin Community College, County Kerry. Back in September I started my journey on the Student Enterprise Awards Programme. I set up my own business called Generation S.T.E.M. The idea of the business came from having experienced the growing topic of S.T.E.M. through different events and organisations such as BT Young Scientist, SciFest, CoderDojo Coolest Project Awards, Excited Movement etc. I found that when explaining the idea of S.T.E.M. to fellow students they didn’t understand it or either presumed it was too complicated. This pushed me to create a business that would show the young people of Ireland how each subject of S.T.E.M. plays an important part in everyone’s life and that S.T.E.M. is an amazing career choice for anyone. The first product I produce & sell is an Educational S.T.E.M. Kit for students. My S.T.E.M. Kit is one of the best ways to show students and young people the real applications and uses of science, technology, engineering and maths. The kit encourages an interest in S.T.E.M. for students and brings all subjects into one practical class. At the end of the kit/program every student will go home with a robot that they made. It gives the students the opportunity to be creative with circuits, sensors, etc. The second product I make & sell is a Microcentrifuge for use in the classroom by students and teachers. I came up with the idea of the product as a result of having a project at the BT Young Scientist for which I had to make a centrifuge. Many teachers came up to me during the week asking how I made it and if I would make one for them. I identified a gap in the market for a cheaper microcentrifuge for science classrooms. I found that there are certain experiments that teachers can't perform because they don't have a centrifuge. This is because they are extremely expensive for schools to purchase. My Microcentrifuge solves this by being cheap and easy for students to use.

Ballinclare Fair Ballinclare Fair is an old horse fair. Its probably one of the oldest horse fairs in Ireland! It falls on the Sunday 6th of May. It strengthens from year to year. The fair is a good family day out. There are stalls and all types of animals from horses to chickens to sheep. Live music in all pubs, the famous Mutton Pies will be available, various sheep shows, best horse, best dressed lady, Pet show & competition @ 3pm. People come from all over Ireland and gather to enjoy the atmosphere of the day and to buy and sell animals.

On the 16th of March I qualified and represented my school, Killorglin Community College, at the Kerry Student Enterprise Awards Programme Regional Final in IT Tralee. It was absolutely an honour to win the Overall Senior Category Award at the Kerry Regional Final. This means that I am heading to the Student Enterprise Awards Programme National Final in Croke Park in May. After winning the senior category award at the regional final I have progressed my products to be more innovative. I believe this is essential for any business. Generation S.T.E.M. also continues to have a strong social media presence on all platforms. I not only give updates and info about my products on social media but also give useful information to young people, parents and teachers to encourage S.T.E.M. I am delighted to say that my business, Generation S.T.E.M., has drawn the attention and backing of Irish role models to young people. West Kerry Live 15

Roast Cod, Tomato, Chard, Caper and Spring Onion Dressing Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School When thinking of cooking fish for dinner the best way to approach it is to find the freshest fish you can find and then plan to do as little work with it and the accompaniments as possible. So, if you want to cook this recipe, don’t focus on the fish must be cod, find the freshest fish you can find and work from there. While every fish has its own flavour and texture the good news is that they are very versatile and will go with most ingredients and can be very interchangeable. This recipe keeps it very simple and is perfect way to cook for two people or if you want to serve a large group because the fish is cooked on a tray in the oven. Ingredients

vinegar together. Taste it and season with salt, pepper and lemon zest. To check the fish Pierce the centre of the fish with a small sharp knife. If you feel very little resistance and if the tip of the knife is warm when you touch it, you can then turn off the oven and let it rest for about 2-3 minutes. You can warm the chard at this point. To serve Place some of the chard and stalks in the centre of a plate. Carefully lift some of the tomatoes and fish from the tray and place on top of the chard. Drizzle this the dressing. Enjoy!!!

serves 4 800g cod fillet, cut into 4 pieces (200g per person) 2 large tomatoes, sliced zest of 1 lemon handful of chard, washed, stalks removed and stalks chopped 50ml extra virgin olive oil 40g capers, roughly chopped 2-3 spring onions, finely chopped rapeseed oil dash of red wine vinegar salt and pepper Method For the cod Preheat the oven to 180ºC. Place the tomato slices on a tray. Season well with salt and pepper. Season the fish with some salt, pepper and lemon zest. Place the fish on top of the tomatoes, skin side up. Drizzle with some rapeseed oil. Put this into the oven to cook - depending on the thickness of the fish, it will take between 8 and 10 minutes to cook. For the chard Meanwhile put a pot on over medium heat, add a little rapeseed oil and then add the chard stalks. Cook this for about 2 minutes and then add the leaves. Season it with salt and pepper and cook for another minute or so until the leaves have wilted.

Turning the Table on Toddlers and Fussy Eaters! Irene Ní Fhlannúra Our children are getting fatter, lazier and heading for a lifetime of poor health according to all the reports! The media is full of sensational facts and figures regarding the weight and health of our young ones. It looks like the trend is set to continue as a recent issue of the Journal of Public Health Nutrition cited that in Ireland almost 46% of all food purchased comes from “ultra-processed” foods. Examples include soft drinks, sweet and savoury packaged snacks, mass-produced packaged breads, biscuits, processed poultry and fish "nuggets". The "junk food" industry spends millions each year on marketing their products directly to the young child. Whether it is bribing them with toys, appealing to them through cartoon characters or using cleverly themed ads that associate so much fun and pleasure with eating their produce, to deny our children these foods seems cruel! On the other hand, the marketing of fresh, natural healthy food lacks these savvy tactics and it is left to us, the parents, to "sell" the healthy diet to our kids. So, whether you are dealing with a head-strong toddler or a fully-fledged fussy eater, here are a few tips that will help you win the war, one pea at a time! You, the parent have the greatest influence on your young child when it comes to eating healthy food. For your children to enjoy fresh produce they must see you choose, prepare and eat fresh produce always. Exposure to fruit and vegetables is the most effective and stress-free way to get your child interested in these foods. Seeing them on your plate or on the kitchen bench will expose your child to these foods. It may take time to hear your child demand more greens but exploring colour and shapes is Nature's way to introduce new foods to children. If children are more often exposed to unhealthy foods, then they will choose unhealthy foods. This is step one – lead by example! If you have to buy processed foods, do not leave them where children can see them and try not to shop for these food items when your child is with you. Small children are extremely busy and prefer to graze throughout the day rather than spend too long at the dinner table. Larger meals are not as appealing to young children so offering healthy snacks throughout the day may be a better strategy. Bite size servings of fresh food such as fruit, vegetables,

cheese, meat and fish can easily amount to a whole meal when added up at the end of the day. Use colour, texture and shapes to create fun snacks for your child. Apple moons, kiwi wheels, orange boats, egg canoes, broccoli trees, cheese blocks, carrot sticks - look in your child's toy box for inspiration! If your child has already developed a liking for processed foods such as burgers, chicken nuggets, sausages, pizza and chips - it's time to get out the recipe books! Homemade alternatives can be very nutritious and allows you to get some extra goodness into them. Grated carrot and onion can be added to lean mince to make burgers, fish pieces or chicken strips rolled in wholegrain crumbs and sesame seeds for tasty goujons, pizza can be made with a wholegrain pitta base and left-over roast veg with chicken as a topping. You may be surprised at how many vegetables you can whizz into a homemade tomato sauce, which can be used as a pasta sauce too! Chips made from real potato take no longer than shopbought oven chips to cook in the oven - for crispiness, make sure the chips are not too thick and bake in a single layer. The word "treat" is often used to describe sweets, cakes or a trip to the take-away. Rewarding young children with unhealthy food is a big no-no as they quickly learn to manipulate this rule. A treat does not need to be a food item, blowing bubbles in the garden with you is a treat in the eyes of a 3-year-old! For healthy food "treats", baking buns and cookies is always a hit. Allowing your child to partake is often a bigger treat than the end result. Baking at home also allows you to control sugar content as well as sneaking in some essential nutrients to the mix! Oatflakes, grated apple, chopped walnuts, dried fruit and honey make great cookies. Using wholemeal flour, seeds and mashed fruit for cakes and cupcakes helps get fibre into the young diet. Even if you have to top the buns with a little melted chocolate, it is still a healthier treat than just chocolate or sweets SolarWith Systems alone. Summer on the way, make some cool treats by blending fruit with plain yoTom Kennedy gurt and freeze in the ice-cube tray. Make Solar..panels tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide food fun orfor children and don't forget that hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, spending with you in the kitchen, getbe it oil, gas or time electricity. ting messy being is A solarlittle systemhands will save up to 70% ofand your annual hotcreative water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efthe real "treat" that young kids adore! ficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how! Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

Maurice Kavanagh Cabs 4 Seater 087-6553399

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

8 Seater 087-3932333

A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

Scéal Eile Ó Leabharlann An Daingin Spring Into Storytime As part of the ‘Spring into Storytime’ programme, Dingle Library will have ‘Creative Storytelling using LEGO’ with Orla Breslin on Saturday 28th at 11am. This is suitable for children up to 10 years of age. The Spring into Storytime programme is a national programme held in all 332 public libraries in Ireland throughout April to encourage children to experience reading as something fun and entertaining. Reading aloud to children has many benefits. Storytime helps children develop their listening and comprehension skills, their vocabulary and language skills, their attention span and their ability to focus on a task at hand. It helps them to develop their own reading skills too, and fosters a love of reading at a young age. It’s also a wonderful bonding experience between a parent and child. As a child grows and the stories they enjoy become more complex, their horizons are broadened and they are exposed to new experiences and situations, and they learn empathy with characters and understanding for other people. Reading can introduce children to new ideas and interests, or enhance their knowledge and enjoyment of their hobbies. Whether for pleasure or school, reading is a skill that needs to be learned and fostered. Nobody is ever too young or too old to start.

Talk on Milltown Tomb Excavations A free public talk on recent excavations at a portal tomb in Milltown – now known to be one of Ireland oldest manmade structures – will take place in Milltown Community Hall on Thursday, 3rd May at 8.00pm. County Archaeologist, Dr Michael Connolly, will explain the significance of what was discovered during the excavations at the Killaclohane Portal Tomb. The tomb, Kerry’s oldest burial ground, dates back to almost 4,000BC and holds evidence of some of the earliest agricultural activity in north-west Europe. All welcome.

Fleadh Cheoil Chiarraí Milltown Walk into the Past

Dineen CABS Servicing the Dingle Peninsula

The organisers of Fleadh Cheoil Chiarraí in Milltown are holding a Family Fun Walk to the historic 6,000 year-old Killaclohane Portal Tomb on the outskirts of the village on Bank Holiday Monday, 7th May to help raise funds for the festival and to promote a Summer Solstice Celebration at the tomb which will form part of the Fleadh programme in June.

Contact Tony on 087 9974338

Participants are invited to join the sponsored walk from the Nagle Rice Community Centre to the Portal Tomb at 10.30am on the day. The tomb at Killaclohane, which was excavated in recent years, has been discovered to be the oldest manmade structure in Kerry and has been dated to 3,800BC. Human remains, pottery and other items were discovered during excavations overseen by Kerry County Archaeologist, Dr Michael Connolly and the Kerry County Museum in 2015. The committee behind Fleadh Cheoil Chiarraí will be holding a special open-air celebration at the tomb on the Summer Solstice, 21st June, which happens to fall on the second day of the festival. Full details of the event will be announced in the coming weeks. ‘This Family Fun Walk on 7th May is aimed to promoting the very significant Killaclohane Portal Tomb and getting kids and their families, and anyone else that wants to join in, to walk the mile or so from the village to the tomb and back,’ said PRO of Fleadh Cheoil Chiarraí, Chris Horan. ‘We have adopted the image of the tomb as our official logo for the Fleadh and we have themed the festival ‘Reconnecting with the Past’ with the portal tomb forming an important part of the Fleadh programme on 21st June. ‘So on Bank Holiday Monday, anyone and everyone who fancies a stroll is invited to join the walk and to make a small contribution towards the running costs of the Fleadh.

‘Walkers should assemble at the Nagle-Rice Community Centre from 10am and hand in their sponsorship cards or simply make a small contribution if they wish. The walk will set off at about 10.30am and there will be refreshments for everyone after. All the sponsorship cards will be put into a hat for a raffle for a few spot prizes,’ said Chris. Milltown Castlemaine GAA Under 14 White Team Lee Strand U-14 County Football League Division 3 B It was a beautiful evening in JP O' Sullivan Park in Killorglin for our U14's white team game against Laune Rangers last Thursday. It ended with a score line of Milltown/Castlemaine 3-05 to Laune Rangers 3-09. The first half brought some excellent saves from Jerry McCarthy and some hard working performances from Liam Cronin and John Kerrisk that kept Milltown/Castlemaine in the game. Milltown/Castlemaine came out strong in the 2nd half -a strong performance from Daire McCarthy in midfield led to him scoring 1-02. This along with some excellent defending from Eoghan Daly kept us well in the game. Cian O'Brien also put in a great performance scoring 1-01 & there was great support from our forwards Cian O Connor and Charlie McGillicuddy. Well done to both teams on a well contested game, next up for our Under 14 White Team is a home game against Kerins O’Rahillys this Wednesday. Under 14 Green Team Lee Strand U-14 County Football League Division 3 A- Friday 20th of April Milltown Castlemaine 5.11 Na Gaeil 2.07 An impressive second half performance ensured that our U-14's added the two points on offer. Na Gaeil with the aid of the wind were on top in the first half. We had our chances but the Na Gaeil goalkeeper made three fantastic stops. We were having trouble dealing with the link play between Na Gaeil's midfielders, centre forward and full forward. This interplay led to a fantastic goal by the Na Gaeil centre forward. Ben Downes and Shane O'Connor were leading the rear guard to ensure that we kept in touch. At the short whistle, Na Gaeil led 2.06 to 1.03. Within two minutes of the start of the second half Anthony Barrett hit the back of the net to give our boys the impetus to storm back into the game. There appeared to be an added spring in our step in the second half. There was some outstanding foot passing and support running with Brendan Casey linking all that was good in the game. Brendan was aided and abetted in the half forward line by the hard working Oisin Spring and Riain Foley. Shane O'Connor had moved to centre back and gave a commanding defensive display with some outstanding fielding. There were some impressive scores taken in this half with Liam Roche scoring 3 fantastic points from play and all angles. Our defence was impressive only conceding 1 point to leave the final score Milltown Castlemaine 5.11 Na Gaeil 2.07(Reports by Danny McClure) Quiz: A huge congratulations to our quiz team for their tremendous performance at the County Final on Sunday last in ISK. September next marks the 80th anniversary of the enrolment of the first pupils in Kiltallagh National School, Castlemaine and so there is much to celebrate in both the last 80 years and the present healthy state of the school. Preparations are now in full swing for the 80th Celebrations to mark the opening of Kiltallagh School, in September 1938. The commemorative event will take place on Saturday September 22nd commencing with a service in the school at 12 noon led by Bishop Kenneth Kearon. Afterwards, all guests will enjoy a BBQ and light refreshments. It is hoped to have many photos and memorabilia on display for all to browse. A book will be also be published to mark this very special occasion. The pupils in Kiltallagh School have been busy writing their narrative stories for this book. In the coming weeks, they will also write a little story about their favourite memory of their time in Kiltallagh. It is also hoped that some past pupils may write a brief paragraph recounting a memorable moment they had in years gone by. I’m sure there will be some very funny and interesting scéaltaí to be written and read!! If you know of any past pupil, we would ask you to encourage them to write a few lines about their time in Kiltallagh. All written pieces should be emailed to kiltallaghns@yahoo.ie before May 31st 2018. A warm invitation is extended to all past and present pupils, teachers, principals, parents, Board of Management members, clergy, parishioners and the many friends of Kiltallagh. St. James Church, Dingle Restoration Project

set out from Dingle on spiritual journeys to Santiago de Compostella to follow the Way of St. James.

Rev. Phyllis Jones

St. James was rebuilt in 1808 and, like many old buildings, is in need of repair and restoration – the cost of which will be in the region of €500,000. To launch the fund-raising and to raise awareness of the project, on 1st May 2018, I will be rekindling our links to St. James of Santiago, and walking the last 116km of the Camino in Spain. St. James Church, restored and improved, will continue to serve God and the community into the next century. I am most grateful for all the encouragment and support I have received and, if you would like to sponsor me on my journey, please donate as follows:

Since coming to look after the churches on the Peninsula, St. James has become very close to my heart. It is an iconic church, reknown worldwide, much due to it being the venue for 'Other Voices' over the past 16 or 17 years. It has been a platform for a number of talented young people, many of whom have gone on to become very successful and famous. Yet it still excites those who are chosen to perform there to this day. It is very much at the heart of the Dingle Community and, throughout the year, plays a role in the many festivals for which Dingle is famous. Visitors come especially to see the church and hundreds of people experience the ambiance and spiritual presence of this special place. Which leads me to say that first and foremost, St. James is a place of worship. It atttracts Pilgrims walking the Dingle Way, as well as its pilgrimage links to Santiago de Compostella. Pilgrims from Spain in Medieval times were thought to have been instrumental in building the church and named it after their own St. James. In the following years, many pilgrims

Fungaí Is deilf mé darb ainm Fungaí Bíonn cleachtadh agam ar nós moncaí, Is féidir leat mé a fheiceáil ó Ché An Daingin ar feadh an lae, Bhí mé im’ chónaí anseo ó thús Ag déanamh, do chleas an Daingin, brabúis. Beidh mé ann go deo sa chuan Ag snámh ann, go ciúin. Beidh mé ann, i gcónaí, Deilf an Daingin, Fungaí.

Rithim na Rámhaíochta Ceathrar ar an gcriú, Gach éinne ag rámhaíocht, Ag rámhaíocht ar ár ndícheall Chun an rás a bhuachtaint. An áit dubh le daoine Ach gach duine ag tabhairt aire Chun nach mbrisfimid an rithim Mar bheadh deireadh lenár rás. Gach éinne ag comhaireamh haon, do, trí, ceathair, Chun go gcuirfimid ár maidí rámha Sa bhfarraige ar an bpointe boise.

Fungaí Is as an Daingean don deilf cháiliúil, Fungaí. Tagann turasóirí ó ar fud an domhain mhóir Chun é d’fheiscint. Tá sé ag tarrac ar 30, níos críonna, fiú! Is breá le na héinne é, Is lasann aghaidh dhaoine suas Nuair a chítear Fungaí ag léimt. Tá ár laoch, Fungaí, ana-thábhachtach dúinn, Ní hé an Daingean céanna bheadh ann gan é! Is é a mheallann na turasóirí chughainn Is táimid an-bhuíoch do!

Fungaí Mé ag snámh san uisce, gach aon lá, Ag léimt in airde do chleas na mbád. Gach éinne ag scréachaigh go glórmhar, Gach éinne ag triail mé a lorg. Mé anso leis na blianta, I mbá bheag an Daingin, Agus anso a fhanaim Lá i ndiaidh lae. Ní fhágfaidh mé riamh A fhad a mhairfidh mé, Bheadh brón ar na daoine Gan mise sa Mharina.

Fungaí Deilf a mhaireann Timpeall Bhá an Daingin, Bíonn an deilf ag léimt timpeall Ar bharr an uisce. Tá Fungaí ag déanamh Ar thríocha bliain d’aois. Deineann na bádóirí ualach airgid As turasóirí a thabhairt Timpeall an chuain, A bhuíochas do Fungaí.

Madraí Uisce Bíonn na madraí uisce sa bhfarraige Iad ag snámh is ag rás, Ní chloisim iad ach tá siad ann Ag faire orm. Tá siad ag imirt le chéile, Anois, cím iad, Féachann siad deas macánta Ach níl siad. Tá siad ag fiach i gcomhair dinnéir Agus tá siad fiáin fonnmhar.

Ruairí Rón

Scéal Fungaí Fungaí is ainm dom. Táim i mo chónaí i gCuan an Daingin le níos mó ná tríocha bliain. An chúis atá leis sin – bhuel, is scéal fada é. Blianta ó shin, bhí mé ag taisteal timpeall an Atlantaigh le mo mhuintir. Léim mé amach as an bhfarraige agus chonaic mé oileán mór glas ar thaobh na láimhe deise. Bhí áthas orm – bhí mé tar éis talamh nua a shroichint, cheapas. Rinne mé mo dhícheall teacht ar an oileán roimh mo mhuintir. Chuaigh mé isteach i gcuan mór. Bhí teach solais in airde ar an bhfaill ar an tslí isteach agus chonaic mé fear a bhí ag féachaint orm tríd an bhfuinneog. Bhí mé ag iarraidh aithne a chur ar an gcuan agus mar sin, níor fhág mé cé go raibh mo threibh san Atlantach. Cheap mé go bhfaca siad an t-oileán freisin. Shnámh mé timpeall ag glaoch orthu ach ní bhfuair mé aon fhreagra. Bhí mé caillte agus bhí brón an domhain orm. B’fhéidir go bhfaighinn bás le briseadh croí ach ansin, chonaic mé beirt ag snámh chugham. Bhí áthas an domhain orthu mé d’fheiscint agus chuir a sásamh áthas orm. Thosaigh mé ag súgradh san uisce agus ba mhór an trua nach raibh ceamara acu! Thóg siad uaim an brón agus sin an fáth nach bhfuilim chun fágaint agus an chúis go bhfuil grá agam do dhaoine.

Micheal Holden Bl.2

Bhíos luite ar an dtrá, Luite is alp ocrais orm, Luite síos is mé ag gol Gan aon fhuinneamh ionam. Ansan, fuaireas boladh éisc. Ní raibh sé ag teacht ón bhfarraige, Bhí sé ag teacht ó shiopa Is na héisc ag féachaint go breá. Bhíos marbh leis an ocras. Chuas trasna na sráide. Ar deireadh thiar thall Ní raibh an doras ar oscailt. Ansan, chuimhnigh mé Gur Lá Caille a bhí ann. Amadán na Bliana Nua mé Is na róin eile ag gáire fúm!

Ruairí Rón Bhí taithí ag Ruairí Rón ar bhia a fháil ón mangaire éisc, go minic. Nuair nach raibh dóthain éisc le fáil aige féin san fharraige, thiocfadh sé amach agus raghadh sé i dtreo na míntíre. Thugadh an mangaire éisc roinnt don mbruscar do ar nós ceann na n-iasc nó an craiceann. Lá amháin, Lá Caille, bhí ocras air agus chuaigh sé go dtí an siopa éisc. Lean sé an fógra a dúirt ‘Iasc Úr’ go dtí go raibh sé ann. Ach, faraoir, bhí gach éinne saor ón obair agus ní raibh an siopa oscailte. Chuaigh Ruairí bocht abhaile le poll ina bholg!

Keith Woodward For years, the Community Council had sought to put a playground in the Village to enhance out little community and enhance the vibrancy of the whole area. Castlegregory is home to many young families and host to thousands of holidaymakers each summer, the lack of a playground has been sorely felt over the years. In 2012 we started looking for a site to integrate a playground into our community. Following an extensive land search, working closely with Kerry Co Council , we had the funds donated to us by a local business man to purchase the perfect site centrally located in the village. A very intense planning permission process was initiated involving 2 encounters with An Bord Pleanála but finally permission was granted and fundraising got underway! The E-tenders process was then used to select a competent contractor. The plans for the playground were drafted including a number of climbing structures, slides, roundabout, swings and equipment designed for children with disabilities. In addition to the playground, a covered amenity area is to be provided to the front of the playground, so the area can be enjoyed in all seasons. Construction work for the project is about to start in the next 4 weeks. In accordance with Council Policy, the playground will be taken over by Kerry Co Co on completion for maintenance and insurance purposes. The Community has been fortunate to receive 75% funding through Leader and has been fund raising hard to make up the 25% We are nearly there thanks to the hugh support of the community and hope to open our new playground in July. A massive thanks to all involved and to everone that has made a donation to make this project possible.

John Anthony & Jason's Pieta House Fundraiser Challenge. John Anthony Thomas from Dingle is currently deployed in South Lebanon with the Irish army. He will be returning to West Kerry in early June with his friend and colleague Jason Hayes to partake in the annual Dingle Adventure Race on June 9th. The 48 kilometer course involves cycling over the Conor Pass, climbing Mount Brandon, running country roads and kayaking in Dingle Harbour. As if that wasn't difficult enough the pair have decided to take on the course wearing a full Irish Defence Forces uniform and backpack. John Anthony and Jason are hoping to complete the course to raise funds for Pieta House, the charitable organisation that provides assistance to those who have been affected in some way or another by suicide. Pieta House free, therapeutic approach to men and women of all ages who are in suicidal distress and those who engage in self-harm. All funds raised are in aid of pieta house. Pierce Hoare A Quiet Place is a riveting horror/thriller by first time director John Krasinski (Who played Jim Halpert in The Office). The film’s main premise is that the characters must not make any noise as the monsters, while blind, have extraordinary hearing, being able to hear television static as though it were a train going by. Because of this the first 10 minutes or so of the movie has no sound whatsoever which I find quite impressive and even more so the fact that there is very little spoken dialogue in the film, with one main character getting no verbal lines at all. The sound design in the movie is excellent, my favourite being the deafening silence whenever we are following the deaf character. Other neat sound design details include the clicking sound the monsters make and how jarring any noise louder than a whisper becomes when most of the movie is in complete silence. Unlike other horror movies where most characters tend to make the worst decisions possible, the characters in A Quiet Place act rational in their situations and have plans for getting through the day in silence, making it all the more tense when things start going wrong. The acting in this movie is something else with all the main characters being able to convey a wide range of emotions with mostly sign language and facial expressions, since talking will alert the monsters. My two favourite performances were by John Krasinski and Millicent Simmons (as she gets no spoken lines and yet still manages to get across all sorts of emotion). The music in this film is expertly placed in only scenes where it’s needed and the rest is in silence, making us experience what the characters feel all the time: Deafening Silence. Before seeing the film I had heard that the design of the creatures was only alright but after watching the movie I would have to disagree. The heads of the monsters are terrifying, disgusting and amazing to look at, with the best part of them, in my opinion, being their ears. I would say to go see A Quiet Place as it is only an hour and a half long and is just amazing, although it is not for everyone, especially those not into horror. Tips on how to Reduce Waste le Transition Corca Dhuibhne The days of the disposable coffee cup may be numbered with the latté levy in the works in the Dáil. A quick look around the world reveals many initiatives to curb the use of disposable cups .... France is looking at a blanket ban on disposables. New Zealand are piloting a cup cycling scheme where you swap out your cup and get your next coffee in a clean cup at participating coffee outlets. With this scheme some towns are hoping to become free of disposable cups altogether. Canada wins the cup with their take on it ... everybody has a reusable takeaway cup and where ever there is a coffee machine there is a wash sink to rinse your cup. Using a reusable cup is the norm and a habit for them. Consider modifying your coffee habit by getting your own reusable on-the-go cup, using a real cup or even going as far as staying put and savouring your coffee like we used to do. Castlegregory Notes Book Fest Weekend: Heralded with dry, sunny days, visitors from across Ireland and Europe, and literary’word-slingers’ from around the nation, converged on 21st-22nd April at the inaugeral Castlegregory Book Fest,in celebration of the International Book Day 2018. The community feasted on word, song and magical recipes as 25 authors, story tellers and poets converged here for their first ‘busman’s holiday’. Visitors from Counties Cork, Clare, Wexford and Dublin enjoyed a break in the nation’s cold weather to take part in a range of diverse entertainment. The auther’s have agreed to start a new literary tradition in Castlegregory, an annual author’s retreat and Book Festival. Finalizing the event with the determination to make next year’s festival even better, the authors and visitors from across the Island all agreed that the only thing missing, which would have made this the perfect ’busman’s holiday’, would have been the opportunity to meet even more of the local citizenry during the festival weekend. Next year, the ‘word-slingers’plan to add workshops for professional and amateur writers, as well as public presentations and are looking forward to meeting more of the locals. The Defibrillator has been moved from Maurice Fitzgeralds Pub and put in a box outside the doors of Spar. IFA Pat O'Shea Kerry IFA Chairperson of the Hill Committee has received a number of calls in the last week about dogs worrying sheep and in two cases where sheep have been killed. Mr. O Shea is now advising farmers of their right to shoot dogs that are found worrying sheep . Mr O Shea says there are far too many dog owners not taking the responsibility that goes with owning a pet as serious as they ought to. There are between 300 to 400 reported attacks in Ireland each year with losses of upwards of 4000 sheep. Emerging Artist - Matt Hodd Conor Browne

How often do ye meet? Barring the odd festival appearance such as K-Fest, we will be meeting one Sunday a month. Our next meeting is on Sunday 13th May from 4-5pm outside the Deenagh Lodge Cafe, at the entrance to the Killarney National Park across the road from St.Mary's Cathedral in Killarney. Will ye be going to other towns and parks outside of Killarney ? This year we are confirmed for K-fest on Sunday June 3rd between 1pm and 3pm. We will be meeting in front of the Poetry wall at the Goat Park where we will perform for the first hour, with another 45 minute or so performance at one of the galleries around the town. The details of this will be confirmed on the day. Where can I get updates on Poetry in the Park events? More updates and information can be found on our Facebook page or the ChangeX page

Michael Healy-Rae TD Mícheál Ó’hEalaigh-Rae

So tell me Matt what do you do? I am currently completing a level 6 diploma in Organic Horticulture at An t-Ionad Glas in Dromcolliher, Co. Limerick. My focus is on running the herb enterprise there as part of my work experience. I intend to go into teaching organic horticulture to people eventually as I have completed a Train the Trainer course also. My poetry background is as a member of the Fja Rua Writers Group in Killarney between the mid-90s and early 2000s. Although I continued to write poems, I drifted away from the scene until I found out about the Poetry in the Park initiative via Change X, which I set up in Killarney in April 2017. How is the poetry scene in Kerry at the moment? It seems to be quite vibrant. In addition to our group, Poetry in the Park Killarney, which is really an offshoot of the Killarney Writers Group, there are groups that meet regularly from week to week in Killorglin, Kenmare, Tralee and Listowel. there is the Ballydonoghue Bardic Festival which took place in March, national poetry day, KFest in Killorglin. This shows the variety of poetry events and groups here in Kerry.

What is your favourite poem ? At the moment it is something immediate like American poet Wendell Berry's The Mad Farmer Revolution. But as you can imagine, to pick one poem is quite hard. How has online media affected poetry? In one sense it has opened up poetry to a much wider audience as poets like David Whyte regularly post up their poems and it is now easier than ever to submit your poems to a competition or content media site or even your own blog. Poems can also be experienced online via stirring videos such as My Ireland by Stephen J Smith that was recorded for St Patricks Day Festival in 2017. It is also easier than ever to stay in touch with poetry happenings via social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter for example. However, the downside is that you need to keep close tabs on how your poems are used and ensure you copyright your poems. I still feel, having discovered poetry in the pre-digital age, that the difference between reading a poem online and in a book is marked and that poems, for me lose some of their impact read on the screen, whereas sitting down with a good book of poems is far more fulfilling for me. So tell me about Poetry in the park? Poetry in the Park Killarney is a free community gathering that invites all those interested in poetry to come along and simply listen to poetry recitals or share mainly poems in the wonderful environs of Killarney National Park. People of all ages are welcome to come along and celebrate the recitation of poetry in a natural setting. The idea for Poetry in the Park originated in Athlone where the original group was set up in 2013 by artist Rose Finerty. The movement has since spread across Ireland via Change X,an online social entrepreneurship platform, which facilitates many other projects such as local explorers, welcome dinner and street feast to name but a few. 38 West Kerry Live

Ankle Sprain Eddie O’Grady

Ankle Joint Most people go over on their ankle at some stage in their lives. Usually they go over outwards and it is the outside of the ankle that gets injured. The ankle is stabilized by muscles, tendons and ligaments. Usually when you go over, it is an instantaneous thing where the muscles have failed to switch on and stabilize and the strain falls on the ligaments to protect you. The muscles also get strained as they try to correct the situation mid accident firing up too late. There are a lot of ligaments in the ankle so the stability is quiet strong. Luckily, usually the ligaments strain rather than rupture. If they rupture the sound will almost be like the sound of a tree branch breaking. You most likely will hear it. Luckily, because there are so many ligaments, even if one or two rupture, you can usually rehab the ankle fully. Protection such as strapping/taping or the likes of an ASO ankle brace may be needed thereafter, if some ligaments are torn fully, and you are involved in a sport where rapid twisting and turning are part of the game and the training. Treatment of ankle sprains is pretty straight for-

ward. One important point is that often most of the pain is due to the swelling that occurs rapidly post injury, so it is important to limit this. Immobilize the foot straight away. Start on NSAIDs(non steroid anti-inflammatories) immediately. Ice immediately(wet towel around iced, around the foot for about 10 mins every half hour or so). There are cold compression therapy machines which are excellent for this kind of injury. Obviously they are not always readily available. They probably are a worthwhile investment for competitive clubs as they are not overly expensive. After a few days physio can be commenced. This often includes gentle mobilization of the joints of the foot, massage to ease of strained/ spasm in muscles and remove some of the swelling through the lymph nodes etc. Different grades of damage require slight modifications in approach but the basic idea is to get rid of inflammation, get movement back in the joints of the foot and relax down the strained muscles. Home rehab given to the patient involves self mobilization of the foot along with progressive strengthening exercises. Usually the condition does not require too many physio sessions but rather a progressive strengthening program prescribed by the physio and followed by the patient. Sometimes if pain lingers, the fibular head may have dropped slightly during the injury(so it is misplaced slightly) and it may need to be gently mobilized back into place using something like ''Mulligan Technique''. The movement of the fibular head can have been tiny, but the shift can cause considerable pain to linger if not rectified. A good physio will always have done this during treatment anyway.

First year Home Economics students of Meán Scoil Nua an Leith-Triúigh, Castlegregory, had a busy few weeks designing and creating dresses for little girls in Africa. This novel idea caught the student's attention. Students were given the task of making a dress for a young girl in Africa for the Little Dresses for Africa organisation. Each student had to use a recycled material (pillowcase) and create a dress from it using the steps their teacher, Ms Leahy, gave them. Students learned skills such as cutting fabric correctly, threading a needle, tacking, hemming, gathering, hand embroidery stitching, costing materials while also being as resourceful, efficient and creative as possible. As well as using and learning new skills these Home Economics students were also helping children in countries much less well off than theirs and were delighted to know their hard work will benefit those in need. These pretty dresses will be posted to the Little Dresses for Africa organisation which will then distribute the dresses among little girls living in Africa later this month. http://www.littledressesforafrica.org/blog/

An Bás Baineadh preab asainn ar an Luan seo caite a chlos go raibh an fear sibhialta cinealta Páidí Ó Lúing tar éis bháis. Múinteóir b’ea é ar feadh na mblianta i nGael Choláiste Chiarraí mara dtuil sé meas agus ómós. Ní fadó ó shin a dúirt iar Príomh Oide na Scoile liom, Pádraig Ó Dálaigh ná raibh aon teora le Paidí mar mhúinteoir agus mar pháirtí. ‘Ard fhear in aon scoil sea é’ arsa Pádraig Chaith sé blianta ar choiste Chomharchumann Forbartha Chorca Dhuibhne agus blianta maithe ina rúnaí. Bhí sé ar choiste Cáirde Choláiste Íde. Ní bheadh dearmad riamh air mheasfá. Fear é go raibh an- thuiscint aige ar a chúirimí. Labharfadh sé le aon duine mar ba cheart. Má táimídne cráite agus tá, chonas atá ag a bhean chéile, Eibhlín, a mhac Colm a n -iníon Eibhlinn agus a dheartháracha Seáinín, Seosaimh,a deirféaracha Máire agus Aingeal. Bhí Garda Onóra ag baill do Chumann caide na Gaeltachta mar aon le Máirín Uí Conchúir (bainisteoir Choláiste Íde) agus scoláirí ó Choláiste Íde. Solas na bhFlaitheas dá anam mánla. Rí Rá Tá na meáin imithe le aer an tsaoil ag tuairisciú ar cad tá ráite nó á rá ag Uachtarán Mheiriceá Donald Trump. Tá fhios ag an saol gur áiféis is mó atá i gceist. Beagach go raibh cogadh domhanda againn as an raic a tharraigh Sasana agus a cáirde fés na buamaí gáis. Cén deifir idir buama gáis seachas buamaí a dhéanfadh píosaí dhuit. Agus cad fén Libya agus cogadh na mBalcan mar a rabhadar ag baint úsáid as bhuamaí le sróin adhmhacha. Ní gás a bhí i ceist ach abhar adamhach. Tá sobal le Priomh Aire Shasana chun sléachtaí. Tá cúrsaí na hEorpa agus Brexit ag baint codladh na hoíche di. Ach is baolach nách bhfuil sí ag dul i bhfeidhm ar an EEC. Cathfaidh sí poll an amhrais, na Sé Chontae, a réiteach sara mbeidh sí abalta dul dtí an gcéad chéim eile. Snámh in aghaidh easa, buíochas le Dia. Anseo tá faobhar agus clóchas ar scata ban agus móran fear fén reifreann gur é ár leas taobhú le ‘Sea’ a bheidh againn isteach sa Bhealtaine. N’fheadar cad a deirim leo. Caithfidh go raibh an Bíobla léite aici. ‘Is dócha nách aon ionadh an oiread daoine atá ag dul leis an Muslamachas mar tá an Domhan Thiar lofa’ ar sí. Cinnte tá a dtárla i mBéal Feirste lé déanaí tréis an ‘distemper’, a chur ar chuid dos na daoine. Ní thuigim conas go raibh oiread cainte fé ghasra a bhí lán do dheoch agus do theaspach. cúpla ceantar a imríonn iománaíocht i gCiarraí níl aon droch fhoireann acu. San idirlinn beam ar bís ag súil le gaisce ónár bhfearaibh, na sinsir caide. The Glan Initiative So... to keep you up to date on the new environmental initiative for the Dingle Peninsula - “GLAN”. The beginning aim of GLAN (Green Local Area Network) is to help businesses make small changes such as reducing the amount of single use plastics they use, along with supporting other environmental actions. Dingle Tidy Towns and Dingle Aquarium have been busy talking to most of the businesses in Dingle and the response has been fantastic. The vast majority of businesses are taking on pledges. In Castlegregory, Rose Spillane and Martha Farrell are approaching businesses – and again the response is really positive. The interest in the #2minutestreetclean initiative has also been great and thank you to the businesses who want to come on board as Street Clean Ambassadors. Again, Kerry Co. Co. is supporting #2minutestreetclean in Dingle and has some great ideas for rolling it out in the near future. We’ll have more information in later editions of WKL... Also – if you would like a Think before You Flush information pack with infographic posters and tent cards for guest houses/ B&Bs / businesses etc. just let us know. Caid. Sea, conas mar a bheidh ag an ocht fhoireann a ainmneófar le dul in adharca a chéile an mhí seo chugainn. Deir scata go mbeidh comórtaisí na bliana go diail ar fad. Tosnófar sa Mhumhain agus ina dhiaidh beidh an damhsa ochtair. Ambasa go bhfuil faobhar fé fhoireann na Gaillimhe agus na Jeacaíní eaglach go ndéanfaidh siad brus. Ná dearmad Tir Eoghain, ná Maigh Eo, Tir Chonaill má bhíonn an fhoireann ar fad acu agus beidh Ciarraí sa bhféachaint. ‘Ní chuirfeadh sé aon ionadh orm’, arsa fear an lá cheanna, ‘dá mbuafadh Ciarraí i mbliana’. Is gnáthaí an ceart a bheith aige. ‘Tá ard thosaigh ag leagadh a chéile ach admhaím,’ ar sé, go gcaithfear dul i ngleic go tapaidh le cosaint Chiarraí’. Is dócha go bhfuil fhios ag an mbainistíocht cá bhfuil na himreoirí a bhainfidh stad as na tosaigh bhradacha. Tá triúr nó ceathrar maith ann don dá áit lár páirce. Chonac le déanaí go raibh foireann camógaíochta ag Ciarraí agus goraibh cúpla bua acu. San am céanna tá an foireann maith caide ban a bhí againn leighte agus gan aon ghaisce ina bhfuil fágtha, ach éireóidh siad arís. Ainneoin ná fuil ach

Paddy's famous Bus, headed the cortege and his many friends and neighbours lined the entrance to Annascaul church in a guard of honour as a mark of respect to Paddy who was a good friend to many during his long life on this earth. Paddy was a man for all seasons, a great character, storyteller, inventer and above all an entrepreneur who returned from England having worked hard in the building industry to open The Thatch Barn and The Tralee Bay Hotel in Aughacasla and in Castlegregory. If they went out with Paddy, they came home with Paddy ! Musicians, singers, storytellers turned up form all over to The Seven Hogs after the funeral and Paddy got the great sendoff he truly deserved. Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann. Sunday at 11.15am. Come along to have some craic with friends on a Sunday morning as your child makes new friends while learning and improving their basics skills of Gaelic football. Our underage group of coaches are extremely dedicated and provide an excellent platform for your child to improve as a player. There’s also the simple joys of mixing with other children, an important aspect of our underage training as they build team spirit. An Cromán Abú! UNDER-8 JERSEYS: Many thanks to Tony O’Sullivan, of Cromane Oysters, who presented our under-8s with new jerseys last Sunday morning at our underage training session. Thanks, Tony.

COUNTY LEAGUE: Division 4 (round 3):

FIXTURES:

Cromane 0-10, Fossa 2-16

Sunday, April 29 – Under-12 County League Division 8 (round 4): Cromane v Ballymac ‘B’ in Ballymac at 6pm.

Our seniors endured a tough trip to Fossa on Saturday evening as they ended up on the wrong side of a 12-point defeat. It was always going to be a tough ask as we were missing our mainstays, Donnchadh Walsh and Sean O’Sullivan. Despite the loss of their energy and influence we were competitive in the first half and trailed by 2-5 to 0-7 at the break. However, as we went chasing the game - gaps appeared in the second half which Fossa comfortably won by 0-11 to 0-3 to close out a convincing win. Our seniors now have an opportunity to reset and regroup as our next competitive game is again in the county league. We play Tarbert at home in round 4 which is currently scheduled for Sunday, May 13. Still, there’s a lot of football to play for and given our departure from the junior championship at the group stage we can fully focus on the county league. Scorers - Cromane: Paul Patrick O’Sullivan 0-4 (0-3 frees), Darren Houlihan 0-2 (0-1 free), Shane O’Neill, Micheál Shaughnessy, Finbar Casey, and Mikey Houlihan 0-1. Cromane team: Paudie McCarthy; Cathal Crosby, John Michael Foley, Stephen Foley; Finbar Casey, Conor Sugrue, Ethan Griffin; Emmet Casey, Darren Houlihan; Shane Ahern, Micheál Shaughnessy, Liam Teahan; Paul Patrick O’Sullivan, Shane O'Neill, Mikey Houlihan. Subs: Sean Teahan for Paul Patrick O’Sullivan, Eamon O’Connor for S Foley, Brice Dourieu for S Ahern, Cian O’Keeffe for M Shaughnessy, Paudie McMahon. MINOR COUNTY LEAGUE: Division 3B (round 5) The Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane minors received a walkover from Ballymac who conceded the round 5 game that was due to be played last Friday evening in Lyreacrompane. This means that the minors will play a county league semi-final but the identity of our opponents will not be known until the outcome of a back game between Glenflesk and Ardfert.

Wednesday, May 2 — Under-14 County League Division 4 (round 4): GGC v Beaufort in Beaufort at 7pm. Sunday, May 6 – Under-12 County League Division 8 (round 5): Cromane v Currow in Cromane at 6pm. An Moinsíneoir Pádraig Ó Fiannachta

Léachtaí Cholm Cille 48 foilsithe ag An Sagart ‘Bhí an Moinsíneoir Pádraig Ó Fiannachta dílis riamh do Léachtaí Cholm Cille agus, nuair a cailleadh é ar an 15 Iúil 2016, ní fhéadfaimis tabhairt faoi ábhar ar bith eile le haghaidh chomhdháil na bliana 2017 ach Pádraig féin. Comóradh ar fhear Gaeltachta, ar fhear léinn agus ar fhear eaglasta atá anseo, mar sin, mar aon le ceiliúradh ar na gaiscí ar fad a chuir sé de le linn a shaoil. Deichniúr cainteoirí ar fad a labhair ag comhdháil na bliana seo caite, i nDíseart an Daingin, agus gnéithe difriúla den saol úd faoi chaibidil acu.’ - An tEagarthóir An Café Liteartha Bóthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean Uí Chúis Siopa Leabhar an Daingin ó 1979
