Dingle Film Club

Open to Everyone. Tuesday Nights 8.45pm The next feature at the Dingle film club will be screened on Tuesday 4th February when the featured film will be the French romantic comedy La Belle Époque. In the film Victor, a disillusioned sexagenarian, sees his life turned upside down on the day when Antoine, a brilliant entrepreneur, offers him a new kind of attraction: mixing theatrical artifices and historical reconstruction, this company offers his clients a chance to dive back into the era of their choice. Victor then chose to relive the most memorable week of his life: the one where, 40 years earlier, he met the great love. The following week on Tuesday 11th February the feature will be Jojo Rabbit. Starring Scarlett Johansson, the film is a World War II satire that follows a lonely German boy named Jojo whose world view is turned upside down when he discovers his single mother is hiding a young Jewish girl in their attic. Aided only by his idiotic imaginary friend, Adolf Hitler, Jojo must confront his blind nationalism. Jojo Rabbit mixes irreverent humour and serious ideas in an audacious anti-hate satire.

Farming News Louis Murchan TIME IS RUNNING OUT TO COMPLETE SHEEP CENSUS FORMS Time is running out fast for farmers to complete their sheep and goat census forms for 2019. The forms can be completed either by post or online. The closing date for the paper-based forms is this Friday, January 31, 2020. It is important that all flock owners return their forms on time as failure to do so can have consequences for other schemes such as Areas of Natural Constraint (ANC) and the Sheep Welfare Scheme. The completion and return of the annual forms is a legal obligation on the keeper, and the onus is on the flock/herd keeper to make sure that completed census forms being returned by post are received on time.

foetus and hormonal changes reduce intakes and rumen capacity at a time of increased nutrient requirements. If ewes aren’t provided with adequate nutrition at this time then they can suffer with poor body condition, poor milk yield and colostrum quality can be reduced. This can result in lambs potentially suffering from poor immunity, with smaller, weaker lambs that are slower growing and more susceptible to disease. Alternatively, ewes that are too fat have increased risk of prolapse and twin lamb disease, which can lead to lambing difficulties.

It is expected that the terms and conditions, which will be announced in detail in February, will be consistent with those that applied in recent years. The department noted that, to qualify as a ‘young farmer’, an applicant must: be participating in the BPS in the year s/he submits an application; be no more than 40 years of age during the calendar year in which s/he first submits an application under BPS; and be setting up an agricultural holding for the first time or has set up such a holding during the five years preceding the first BPS submission.

The last six weeks prior to lambing are probably the most important of the year. In this period the foetus is growing, taking space in the abdomen away from the rumen and reducing the ewe’s daily dry matter intake (DMI), while energy and protein demands are increasing to cover the growth of the lambs. Indeed, 70% of a lamb’s birth-weight will be put on in the last six weeks before birth, and she also must develop udder tissue and produce colostrum during this time. In fact, the ewe’s nutritional needs will often double during the last six weeks prior to lambing (depending on how many lambs she is carrying), yet intakes are usually depressed. This is the key reason why scanning is recommended. Ewes should be grouped according to how many lambs they are carrying, with feed provision then being adjusted accordingly. Weighing ewes on a regular basis, as well as routine body condition scoring, can be very helpful in determining the appropriate feeding level Maximising the use of high-quality forage can help to reduce the quantity and quality of purchased concentrate feed required, saving money. Providing a high-quality forage source is very important, as feed costs make up a significant proportion of the total costs in a sheep flock. It is important to get forage analysed, as this provides a starting point to base ration formulation upon. When it comes to protein, the amount of microbial protein produced in the rumen of the ewe is crucial. Ensuring the rumen is functioning at an optimum level is, therefore, very important, as it will increase the amount of microbial protein. In the last few weeks before lambing, when space is limited and the demands for colostrum and milk production are increasing, there is a greater need for a higher quality, higher digestible undegradable protein (DUP) source, such as soya. A concentrate feed should be chosen based on the quality of forage available on the farm. In most cases, using a higher specification concentrate will mean that less needs to be fed, reducing costs. This means forage utilisation will be better, not only improving the health of the ewes, but also reducing feed costs overall for the farm. What’s more, lambs will be born with more vitality and will grow faster, earlier in life. Typically, high-quality concentrates will include a high proportion of cereals, which will drive rumen digestion and stimulate glucose production, which is necessary for foetal growth, colostrum production and when in short supply leads to twin lab disease. Concentrates should also have a good-quality protein, typically around 10% soya.

Meanwhile, it was noted that a ‘new entrant to farming’ is defined as:

Don’t forget water……….

Participating in the Basic Payment Scheme in the year s/he submits an application;

Having commenced the present agricultural activity in the 2018 calendar year or any later year;

Having not had any agricultural activity in his/her own name and at his/her own risk in the five years preceding the start of the present agricultural activity.

As with other ruminants, water is extremely important in sheep. Sheep prefer fresh, clean water. Intakes of water increase dramatically as ewes lamb and it is essential that sufficient clean water is available at all times. Ensure good access to feed. On an ad-lib forage system, there should be approximately 15cm of feed space per ewe. This may mean feeding between pens, as well as in front of pens. If feeding concentrates, then at least 45cm of feed space per ewe is required. One solution for feeding ewes is to scatter the concentrates on the floor (if the bedding is clean and dry). This encourages exercise, as well as slowing down intakes, but also increases access to feed for all ewes in a pen. This has been shown to reduce prolapses in ewes. If significant quantities of concentrate feed are being fed, then it is best practice to split this over two or three feeds a day to minimise acidosis risk. Feeding less of a better-quality concentrate will pay, not only with reduced feed costs overall but also reduced health issues, including fewer cases of twin lamb disease, prolapses, watery mouth and a lower worm burden post-lambing.

NATIONAL RESERVE 2020 TO OPEN FOR APPLICATIONS IN FEBRUARY The National Reserve for 2020 will open for applications in February, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has confirmed. The department also confirmed that there will be no need for a linear cut to the value of all Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) entitlements. The EU regulations underpinning the operation of the National Reserve provide for priority access to the mandatory categories of ‘Young Farmer’ and ‘New Entrant to Farming’. It is expected that the funding in place for the 2020 National Reserve will be in the region of €3 million, which based on the level of applications in recent years will be sufficient to meet the expected demand, the department confirmed this evening. Successful applicants to the National Reserve receive an allocation of entitlements at National Average value or a top-up to the National Average value on entitlements that are below the national average. Full details of the operation of the scheme will be available when the scheme opens for online applications in February 2020 to coincide with the opening of online Basic Payment Scheme applications, the department added. The closing date for receipt of applications under the scheme will be Friday, May 15, 2020.

In addition, in line with the requirements under National Reserve schemes since the introduction of the Single Payment Scheme in 2005, successful candidates will be required to meet an appropriate agricultural education qualification standard. Successful candidates will also be required to have a gross off-farm income of less than €40,000 in either of the 2018 or 2019 tax years. In line with the requirements under National Reserve schemes since the introduction of the Single Payment Scheme in 2005, successful candidates will be required to meet an appropriate agricultural education qualification standard, usually having to hold a Level 6 Certificate in Agriculture, or similar. Successful candidates will also be required to have a gross offfarm income of less than €40,000 in either of the 2018 or 2019 tax years. GETTING EWE NUTRITION RIGHT IN THE PRE-LAMBING PERIOD As we head towards the lambing season it is important to focus on ewe nutrition to ensure optimum flock performance. HSA TO BEGIN FARM-INSPECTION CAMPAIGN The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has announced plans to carry out 300 on-farm inspections. The inspections will be focused primarily on working safely with livestock. In 2019, six of the 18 farm fatalities involved livestock, and five involved people over 65. Every year, fatalities occur at calving time, and half these livestock deaths took place last spring, the safety authority outlined. All of the deaths involving livestock, involved cattle in 2019. During the two-week campaign, inspectors from the HSA will visit farmyards across the country and focus on the common risks

encountered in livestock safety, with a particular focus on calving safety. They will be checking that there is an adequate physical barrier between the farmer and freshly calved cow when handling or tagging calves. During the animal handling inspection campaign last year, 261 farm inspections were carried out. Of them, 30 prohibition and improvement notices were issued; mostly for having no or incomplete PTO guards on tractors, no guards on PTO shafts on slurry spreaders and other farm machinery. Meanwhile, 162 written advice reports were issued, which predominately covered advice on animal handling and other related issues. Farmers are also urged to make sure they have a secure area for loading cattle, and inspectors will also be checking animal handling facilities, like cattle crushes, head scoops and calving gates. EVIDENCE OF EXPOSURE TO RABIES (LYSSAVIRUS) IN AN IMPORTED SABLE The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) has identified evidence of exposure to lyssavirus in a sable (a mammal similar to mink) which had been imported into Ireland as a pet. Lyssaviruses can affect all mammals. The Lyssavirus family of viruses includes rabies virus.

Pat Hanafin Septic Tank Emptying & Drain Cleaning With over 30 years in business providing a Septic Tank Cleaning Service in the Dingle Peninsula, we now provide DRAIN CLEANING. From 2” sink lines to 4” - 12” sewer pipes. Biocycle tanks filter system, washed after emptying. Providing power washing service and washing facility. 24 hour cover.

On the 7 January 2020, the sable was displaying untypical behaviour. DAFM investigations identified that the animal was kept securely confined and there was no evidence of contact with animals outside the household. However, the animal was “put-to-sleep” as the investigation could not rule out rabies infection, in accordance with our emergency preparedness contingency plan. Owners of dogs, cats and ferrets are advised to monitor the health and behaviour of their animals and report any abnormal or unusual behaviour in their animals to DAFM. Any members of the public in the surveillance zone who require further information can ring the DAFM Regional Office in Cork on 021 4851400.

buckwheat, oats, brown rice, amaranth and quinoa. During illness and recovery these grains are best soaked for 24-48 hours before cooking. No single food has all B vitamins in rich supply so eating a variety of grains and vegetables will help to ensure a good supply. Vitamin C foods are also a must during and to prevent illness. Raw, fresh fruit offer a good supply – choose thick-skinned raw fruits like oranges, lemons, pineapple and melon as they are protected from bacteria and viruses by their skin. Lightly steamed green vegetables also provide vitamin C. Fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kefir and kombucha are among the most nutritious and digestible foods available and are a natural source of good bacteria (probiotics) essential for immune function. Useful supplements to use during recovery include B-complex vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin D3, zinc and good quality probiotics. Warm drinks as herbal teas - echinacea, fenugreek, ginger, tulsi (holy basil), chamomile, thyme and green tea are all good tonics for recovery.

Even without the threat of the Coronavirus, it's that time of year when many of us are either in the midst of illness or languishing in its aftermath. Body aches, low energy levels, reduced appetite and a heavy head are just some of the symptoms people experience post-illness. Whether it is a serious illness that involved harsh treatment or a viral attack such as the common cold and flu, nutrition plays a crucial role in your recovery. Poor nutrition during the recovery stage may hinder the repair and rejuvenation of the body and makes healing process a long, arduous road. Obviously, patients' needs differ greatly depending on age, the illness and treatment involved but there are some fundamental tips that apply to most of us during any convalescence. The aim of convalescent nutrition is to maximize nutrient-rich eating with minimum digestive effort. Most of our immune activity is secreted from intestinal linings, yet the digestive tract can take on the burden from any attack. Also, treatments such as antibiotics, steroids, chemotherapy and anti-inflammatory drugs can disrupt normal intestinal function. Therefore, it is important to keep food light, nutritious and easy to digest and make sure it offers an optimum supply of calories and nutrients for recovery and repair. Avoid warmed-up leftovers and pre-cooked frozen meals as these are less nutritious and carry a greater risk of bacterial contamination - the convalescents’ immunity is already impaired and they may not ward off another infection as efficiently as a healthy person. Red meat, fried or fatty foods are also a no-no. They are difficult to digest and use up vital energy to process through the digestive system - energy that would otherwise be available to the repair process. Sugar, sugary drinks and snacks are also off the menu during illness and recovery. Just a teaspoon of sugar can suppress immune activity by 50% for up to four hours after ingestion. Sugar interferes with the transport of vitamin C into cells - possibly the most important nutrient in all aspects of immunity. Sugar reduces the production of protective antibodies. Sugar causes mineral imbalances and neutralizes the action of essential fatty acids making our cells more vulnerable to attack from viruses, bacteria and other invaders. You will not be doing any favours by placing fizzy drinks and hard boiled sweets at any patient’s bedside locker! Best foods for recovery are made from fresh produce - fruit, vegetables and some wholegrains. Protein, necessary for rebuilding and repair of cells is best sourced from white fish, organic poultry and vegetables, beans and legumes. Red meat and pork products are not recommended as part of a recovery diet. However, bones from organic beef, chicken or lamb offer great support through minerals and can add extra nutrients and flavour to broths, soups and vegetable dishes. If you feel that you require extra protein during this time use energy-rich digestible whey protein powder or protein powder to increase protein intake. These powders can be added to cereal, smoothies, juices and soups and boost B vitamins and protein when appetite is low. Another valuable source of B vitamins include yeast extracts available in health food shops and some supermarkets. These can be added to warm drinks or soups with added chilli, ginger and garlic for extra oomph! Our bodies use up a great amount of B vitamins during stress and illness. We do not store Bvitamins so need replenishment daily for energy, immunity and recovery. Meeting this demand may be tough when you are ill or recovering which may warrant a boost through Vitamin B-rich foods, supplements and/or reputable yeast extracts. Wholegrains offer the best plant-based supply of B vitamins especially 12 West Kerry Live

Medicinal mushrooms such as Chaga, Cordyceps, Shiitake and Reishi may be new to us but are used as immune tonics in Eastern Europe and Asia. Finally, meals are best served small and appealing to the eye to encourage appetite during an illness. In Victorian times, a patient's meal was beautifully presented on dainty crockery along with a posy of flowers. Psychologically, most of us respond well from feeling loved and cared for during illness, particularly young children and the elderly. If you are caring for someone who is sick, be sure to keep them company while he/ she eats. It is often difficult to dine alone, but particularly so when you are not feeling well. Being ill can take its toll on both mental and physical health - but good food, good company and a good giggle may well be the best medicine of all! From The Archives Edited By Ted Creedon Blasket Raid From – Newcastle Courant, 16 May 1747 They write from Tralee in Ireland, that a French Privateer put in at a place call’d the Blaskets, near Dingle, and took 10 Bullocks and 20 sheep; then threatened to rob the Town of Dingle.

Dingle vessel captured off Portugal From – Newcastle Chronicle, 14 December 1776 The Hawke, Sheehy [master], from Dingle to Lisbon, was taken about four leagues from the Rock of Lisbon by a provincial privateer. [Leagues varied in length but, on average, at sea represented about 3.5 miles or 5.5km]

Dingle vessel ashore in Wicklow From - Wexford Constitution, 8 October 1864

Dingle harbour drownings From – Kerry Evening Post, 24 May 1845 Another melancholy accident happened yesterday by the upsetting of a canoe in Dingle harbour. Here is additional proof of the awful effect of Sabbath desecration. Six people were returning from the Pluto warsteamer – inexperienced in canoe management – when about midway between the vessel and the quay the boat upset and the owner and his son, a boy, met a watery grave. The other four were rescued from an untimely end, by a merciful God, by the fishermen from the quay, who witnessed the disaster – and here I must say too much praise cannot be given to these poor men. I trust it may prove a salutary warning to some of the survivors and genteel Sabbath breakers in Dingle who are in the weekly habit of insulting the Majesty of Heaven by similar Sunday trips about the harbour. Those persons in the boat were Jack Herlihy and his son, drowned; Goldsworthy, the caretaker of Ballintaggart; the gun-room steward of Pluto; a cow boy from Ballintaggart and another lad named John Shea, from the Quay, about 16 years of age.

Ventry wreck. From – Saunder’s News-Letter, 3 April 1787

Yesterday, the sloop Susan, of Dingle, was driven on shore near Greystones and fortunately came so far up on the sands as to permit of the crew, as the waves receded, jumping from the vessel to the shore, and so escaping with their lives. The Coastguard were promptly at the scene and rendered material aid to the shipwrecked crew.

The brig Mars, of Bermudas, Robert Masey, master, left from New York bound for the port of Dublin, laden with flaxseed, tar and staves, was wrecked in the harbour of Ventry, in the district of Dingle, on the 9th day of March last. Only a small part of the cargo saved.

They also assisted in unloading the vessel, the bottom of which proved to be so seriously damaged as to necessitate the removal of her contents - a quantity of marble fittings for a chapel in Dingle being conveyed from an English port.

Shocking accident in Dingle Workhouse

Dunquin accident From – Kerry Evening Post, 13 November 1895 Last week an accident, which nearly resulted in the drowning of four fishermen, occurred at Dunquin, a few miles to the west of Dingle. It appeared that the four men went to look after some lobster pots in a canoe. When about a mile from shore one of the ribs of the boat perforated the canvas. The canoe commenced to fill rapidly, and was fast sinking when one of the men succeeded in stopping the flow of water with his coat, When within ten yards of the beach the canoe sank, and the men had to swim ashore.

From – Cork Examiner, 11 March 1853 A shocking accident occurred at the Dingle workhouse on Saturday last. A young girl, about 18 years, who was helping the cooking, fell into the boiling cauldron of soup. She was up to her arms and as about a minute elapsed before she got out, she was fearfully scalded. Dr. Williams was in attendance upon her in about five minute after, and applied the usual remedies, but we have since heard she died.

Contraband seized From – Dublin Courier, 2 September 1763 On the 18th of August last, Henry Hewitt, Esq; Surveyor of Dingle, seized near the Mouth of that Harbour, and buried in the sand, a Quantity of Wine and Brandy in Hogsheads. [ Hogshead – a barrel containing 50 gallons or more].

Young woman killed on Green Lane From – Kerry Evening Post, 17 January 1844 A man named Walsh was delivering a rail of turf to a house in the Green Lane, Dingle, when the horse galloped off and rolled over a fine young woman of the name of Shea. The car struck her on the chest and so great was the concussion that she died in a few hours after. She barely retained life to receive the rights of the church.

French prisoners From – Dublin Evening Post, 18 January 1781 The dysentery is now raging amongst the French prisoners at Dingle; 260 of whom, officers of the army and navy, and privates, were put in there about three weeks ago, by contrary winds, in a cartel vessel, from New-York to Brest. About 30 have died within these few days and above 60 are now languishing. The vessel has been put under quarantine; and an express dispatched to Government with the above account. [Cartel ships were used for humanitarian purposes, and flew flags of truce].

Ó Sé said, ‘Páidi’s idea to expand the tournament beyond senior men’s teams back in 2009 was visionary and he would be proud to see new clubs getting involved year on year, all wanting to experience all that is good about the GAA. We are pleased that the tournament continues to be one of the most talked about GAA events in the calendar and we wish all clubs a safe and enjoyable experience. The support of local host clubs is crucial in ensuring we can maintain such a high number of teams and we thank them for their co-operation and making fields available to us.

The festival, founded by Kerry iconic footballer Páidi Ó Sé, has attracted over 16,000 club players over 30 years and has grown into a major international GAA event with senior, intermediate and junior competitions as well as teams attending social events at Comórtas HQ, Páidí Ó Sé’s pub in Ventry.

Cromane GAA SENIORS: Mid Kerry League (round 1): Cromane 0-8, Keel 2-12

Sunday, February 2 (2pm) - Round 2: v MilltownCastlemaine (away)

The Cromane seniors opened their 2020 campaign with a defeat to Keel in chilly Cromane on Sunday.

Sunday, February 9 (2pm) - Round 3: v Beaufort (away)

While Keel deserved their win the final scoreline was glossed by two goals from the visitors from across Castlemaine Harbour at the end of either half. Cromane popped over the first score of the game with Brendan Foley showing some nice footwork to point after 3 minutes. Indeed it was encouraging to see the Brendan and Danny Healy back in the maroon of Cromane on their return to senior football action. Keel dominated the next quarter (with Aaron Murphy and Thomas Ladden impressing) and eased into a 0-6 to 0-1 lead before one of three Cromane debutants, Darragh McKeefry, slotted over a 30-metre free after 16 minutes. Darragh along with Eanna Healy and Kieran O’Sullivan (last year’s Kerry minor) were all making their first starts for the Cromane seniors. All three performed well and can be delighted with their debuts. Our goalkeeper Chris O’Connor was involved last year and this was his first Mid Kerry League game. At the other end of the pitch, the evergreen Sean O’Sullivan at full-forward was starting his 25th campaign with the Cromane senior football team, phenomenal dedication. It was tit for tat for the rest of the half with Keel holding a five-point lead. That was until a quick kickout went awry to give Keel a goalscoring opportunity that they didn’t turn down. This gave the half-time scoreline a slightly lopsided look: Keel ahead 1-8 to 0-3. Cromane upped their game a notch in the second half, with further scores from Darren Houlihan (free) and McKeefry (from a mark), this will be the answer to a quiz question in a few year’s time: who was the first Cromane man to score from a mark? With 10 minutes left the gap was down to seven, 1-12 to 0-8. Points from substitute Finbar Casey and Danny Shea were some reward for Cromane improved performance in the last 15 minutes. However, a goal with the last kick of the game from Keel Gary Sayers embellished the final score for the visitors: Keel winning 2-12 to 0-8. Scorers: Darragh McKeefry 0-4 (0-2 frees, 0-1 mark), Brendan Foley, Danny Shea, Finbar Casey 20 West Kerry Live

Their second round game takes place a week later with a home game against Austin Stacks ‘B’. This is a great way for parents and children to get involved in our club. The children pick up the skills of football, have fun, and make friends? By the way, it’s also FREE. Note that club membership for 2020 can be paid on the morning of our mini maroons. Interested? Come along on the day or email Cromane GAA coaching officer Gavin O’Connor (on cromanecoachingofficer@gmail.com) or get in touch with the club via Facebook. If you have yet to pay, then please get in touch with our club registrars Paul Patrick O’Sullivan, Patrick Casey, Orla O’Connor, and Liam Teahan to pay your membership for 2020. NEWKD News NEWKD Community Planning in Corca Dhuibhne NEWKD invites everybody living or working on the Dingle Peninsula to have their say on the future development of Corca Dhuibhne. People are warmly welcome to any one of eight forthcoming community meetings. These will take place across the Peninsula, beginning on January 30, in Annascaul. The meetings will provide an opportunity for local people – residents, workers and long-term visitors – to have a real and meaningful say about the future direction of their communities. The forthcoming meetings are part of a concerted effort to promote evidence-based planning. They will build on work already done before Christmas, when communities reviewed data on the local economy, society and demographics. The process also looks at environmental factors and specifically at the effects of climate change. Planning needs to be sustainable, and the Peninsula needs to be ready to deal with the potential effects of climate change. Indeed, the Dingle Peninsula is ahead of the curve relative to other parts of Ireland in respect of energy awareness. NEWKD is coordinating the planning process and will be working with relevant agencies, including Kerry County Council, to give effect to proposals that emerge from communities. SKDP will be jointly leading the process in Keel, Boolteens, Inch and Annascaul, with NEWKD spearheading the process elsewhere on the Peninsula. Community-led planning represents a new approach. It builds on the expertise and know-how that exist in every parish on the Peninsula. The consultation process will involve further examining the data – to identify needs and opportunities. Already, communities have identified the need to reach out more to people who live alone, and they have noted opportunities to develop sheltered housing and improved transport linkages. They have also noted the need to support more young people to live on the Peninsula, and are identifying opportunities in respect of remote working. The Peninsula is buzzing with great ideas, and it is hoped that the forthcoming plans will capture these and take them forward. NEWKD is promoting an evidence-based approach – ensuring that proposals are grounded, and are relevant to the local context. Therefore, they have contracted independent consultant Dr Breandán Ó Caoimh to assist with the process. Breandán, who is a renowned geographer and social scientist, has extensive experience of community planning, including in several European countries. He will attend the forthcoming meetings. In addition, NEWKD is working with UCC to support the planning process. UCC brings particular expertise in climate modelling. Connor McGookin and his colleagues from the MaERI (Marine and Renewable Energy) Institute in UCC have been working with farmers, schools and communities in Corca Dhuibhne, and will be represented at the forthcoming meetings. This process is happening at an opportune time for Corca Dhuibhne. Kerry County Council is working on its Municipal District Plan, and the community planning process should feed into and support the work of the local authority. While the County Council is responsible for land use and zoning, the community plans will be more extensive, and can include community facilities, economic development, employment, infrastructure, tourism, transport, quality-of-life-, wellbeing, youth development, landscape, environment, education and inter-community collaboration. Each local plan will be unique, and will also contribute to a strategic perspective for the entire peninsula. Depending on the proposals that emerge, other agencies may also be approached to make investments in Corca Dhuibhne. As this process evolves, other details will be circulated. It is important that citizens participate in the meeting for their community. The meetings will take place as follows: Monday February 3rd – Castlegregory Club Rooms at 8.00pm Wednesday February 5th – Camp The Old Schoolhouse at 8.30pm Thursday February 6th - Halla Le Chéile Cloghane/Brandon at 7.30pm Monday February 17th – Áras Bhréanainn, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh, ag 7.30pm Tuesday February 18th – Scoil Náisiúnta Eoin Baiste, Lispole at 7.30pm Wednesday February 19th – Dingle (Location to be confirmed) 24 West Kerry Live

Having previously cycled across America and pedalled the length of Africa, Tomás Mac an t-Saoir from Baile an Fheirtéaraigh has just begun the most epic of journeys. Last Thursday he hopped onto his bike in Auckland, New Zealand and started cycling home. Here, he shares his thoughts from the road.

Setting Out From New Zealand On The Long Road Home Tomás Mac an t-Saoir

I'm actually enjoying New Zealand so much I'm seriously considering delaying my flight to Australia so I can spend a few extra weeks here, & less time in Australia. A woman posted about me in a Irish Mammies New Zealand Facebook group so I've been getting tons of messages offering accommodation around NZ. I've falling behind on pretty much everything so far. It feels as if the trip has gotten off to a 100 mph start & I'm stuck on first gear trying to catch back on! It's also been a very different start compared to the start I had in Egypt during the Africa cycle. It's a much calmer start this time, none of the madness I endured in Egypt, though I do miss the madness of Africa! Maybe I might experience something similar to it when I reach Asia.

Firstly I want to thank everyone for the support & encouragement so far! Everyone seems to be enjoying following along & the support is much appreciated as always!

That's all for now, I'll check back in again in 2 weeks time! You can also follow my trip through my social media - thanks for following along! Facebook - Tomás World Cycle Twitter - @tomasworldcycle Instagram - @anbotharfada

I've been in New Zealand now for about 12 days. In that time I've covered about 266km on the bike, totalling 3 cycle days. It's been a slow start compared to the USA & Africa cycles, but I'm not in any hurry this time. It also took a good few days to get over the jetlag - 'twas a long few flights from Ireland to get here! While I was in Auckland I stayed with Niamh de Hóra, who I hadn't seen in at least a year and a half. Catching up with her was brilliant & there was so much to do around Auckland I ended up staying a week at her house. I visited Bethel's Beach, some lovely viewpoints such as Mount Eden with an incredible view of the city, and the main highlight being a sunset Kayak out and back from Brown's Island. Kayaking back into Auckland in the pitch dark with the city lights illuminating around us was an incredible experience!

OPEN Mon - Sat 11am to 4 pm

Eventually I bid farewell to Auckland & started the bothar fada back to Ireland. I've no idea what's in store between now & whenever I get home, but it's going to be one exciting trip. There is about 25,000-30,000 km to cover, over 3 continents & at least 40 different countries. Africa was a 10,000km cycle in comparison.

Chosen as one of the top independent bookshops in Ireland by the Irish Times

So far New Zealand has been a joy. After leaving Auckland I took a detour to Hamilton, covering 200km in 2 days. Not bad considering I hadn't cycled a bike properly since September! I reached Hamilton in time for the International Rugby Mini 7's tournament. A lad from Waterford called Tom Devine offered to put me up while I was in town. I never met Tom before but his sister is friends with my sister in college so that's where the connection came from. Small world eh! The 7's turned out to be great craic, an Irish womens & mens team were both competing & gave a mighty account of themselves. New Zealand won both the womens & men's competitions.

Tuesday to Friday: 10am to 6pm | Saturday: 10am to 6pm Late Thursday by appointment

New Zealand is a spectacular & beautiful country. I had heard & read enough about it but being here & seeing the beauty with my own two eyes is class. Between the coast & countryside it has beauty in abundance. The locals are extremely friendly & helpful as well which is great as I want to meet & speak to as many people as I can. I've tried to stick mainly to the isolated back roads as the drivers here are a biteen mad, anytime I've stopped and asked at a house to fill my water bottles, locals always greet me with a smile & a chat. The north island has been amazing so far and everyone keeps saying the south island is even better.

Small Changes: Dirty Laundry Weather forecasters will often differentiate between the temperature on a thermometer and the ’feels like’ temperature. This is the perceived temperature we experience when factors like wind speed and humidity are taken into account. In my opinion the ‘feels like’ factor should also be applied to housework such as laundry because it feels like I do at least 13956 loads of washing a week and I am sure I’m not alone in arriving at this estimation. The impact of clothing on climate and the environment is not something that springs to mind when in the middle doing a task as repetitive and mundane as laundry so it may come as a shock to know that the textile industry creates more pollution than aviation and shipping transport combined. While changes within the fashion industry are needed to address much of the environmental impact of textile manufacture, there are many personal choices we can make as consumers to engage with fashion more sustainably. In addition, up to 25% of the carbon footprint of clothing, bedding and soft furnishings are attributable to how they are cared for and maintained and as individuals we have a large degree of control to make big changes with small gestures. SUSTAINABLE FASHION Consumerism in fashion has grown rapidly worldwide in recent years with 400% more clothes purchased in 2020 than in 2000. Clothing is being produced on shorter timeframes with new designs appearing every few weeks to satisfy demand for the latest trends. Exploitation of textile workers has been well documented for many years but more recently the environmental impacts of fast fashion are being recognised and reported. Over 60% of the textiles used in the clothing industry and a large proportion of clothing manufacturing occurs in China and India, countries which rely on coal-fueled power plants with high carbon emissions. Synthetic fibres (polyester, acrylic, rayon etc.) comprise approximately two thirds of the global fibre market. These fibres are all plastic based (produced from fossil fuels), have limited options to be recycled and are the number one source of microplastics in the oceans. In addition, the production and lifecycle of a single polyester t-shirt will result in over twice the amount of greenhouse gases being emitted than a cotton t-shirt (cotton production is far from ideal though as it is a thirsty crop on which a lot of pesticides may be sprayed and this has a greater impact on land and water). Textile dyeing is the second largest polluter of clean water throughout the world and almost 60% of all clothing produced is disposed of to landfill or incineration within a year of production (the equivalent of one rubbish truck full per second).

As consumers who have worked hard to make money to buy clothes, it is important to acknowledge that each time we wash clothes they shed fibres and thus degrade slightly. This is particularly true of synthetic textiles with up to 720000 micro plastic fibres being released from an average 6kg wash of clothes. These fibres eventually end up in water courses and have made their way into drinking water supplies and the food chain. The use of guppy bags or corra balls (available online) in your wash can be used to capture these micro plastics. We all wash our clothing far too much and it is something I have been particularly guilty of. I suspect that this is less to do with a universal love of doing laundry and more to do with the existence of ‘the chair’ and the ‘floordrobe’. This is where clothes which have been worn once or twice with the intention of being worn again are placed and pile up over time in a type laundry limbo. Trying to gauge if mine or a family members clothing needs to be washed by sniffing them or checking them over individually is not a job I relish so I usually end up putting most clothes from the piles of doom into the machine whether they need to be washed or not. Hanging up clothes, airing clothes appropriately or spot cleaning small stains (jeans especially) significantly reduces the amount of washes I/we do a year and extends the lifespan of clothes at the same time. This is simple and very effective small change but definitely a work in progress for me! TEMPERATURE The care label on clothes tells us the maximum washing temperature that an item of clothing can withstand and not the recommended temperature to wash a garment at. Washing clothes at higher temperature can put undue stress on fabrics and can age your clothes prematurely not to mention that warmer washes use more energy. Washing clothes at 30°C uses about 40% less energy than washing clothes at 40°C and the savings to your electricity bill alone should be reason enough to turn down the dial (newer washing machine models can wash as low as 20°C). DETERGENTS

‘The most sustainable garment is the one you already own’ (@ sustainablefashiondublin) and extending the active life of an item of clothing even by 9 months reduces its annual carbon, water and waste footprint by 20-30%. Restyling, upcycling and repairing clothes and repurposing textiles such as towels and bed linen all reduce the environmental footprint of textiles. Swopping and renting clothes are becoming popular options (swapsies.com for example). Buying a second hand item of clothing reduces its carbon footprint by over 80%. Charity, retro and vintage shops as well as online sites such Depop, Vinted, Dressup Market, eBay and Vestiaire Collective, all offer great options and bargains for second hand clothing for all ages.

A book could be written on the pros and cons associated with using powder, liquid or detergent sachets in terms of issues like packaging and transport, water use in its manufacture, efficacy at low temperatures and ease of adapting dosage for the dirtiness of your wash. The truth is no matter what choice you make, conventional detergents are all phosphate containing cleaning products (phosphates cause algal blooms in fresh water which use up available oxygen) manufactured from synthetic chemical compounds. Surfactants (chemicals that reduce the surface tension of oil and water to help dirt to drop out of clothing) and optical brighteners (it’s an illusion!) are particularly toxic to aquatic life, persist in the environment and have been shown to disrupt the endocrine (hormone) systems of both humans and animals, affecting fertility in particular. All conventional detergents have a warning on them saying ‘harmful to aquatic life, with long lasting affects’ and the toxicity logo depicting this statement is a picture that paints a thousand words.

Breaking a fast fashion habit does not have to mean total avoidance of new purchases. Consciously choosing quality clothing over quantity is important as is investing in the most sustainable brands you can afford (@goodonyou_app allows users to search a brand and provides information on them such as workers conditions, waste management and carbon neutrality). Supporting local designers and producers, boutiques and small shops is also key to a circular sustainable economy.

An alternative is to use eco-detergents (like Ecover) which are phosphatefree, biodegradable, not toxic to animals, and most likely in recyclable or recycled packaging. Eco-detergents can be expensive relative to conventional detergents so a new product called a laundry Eco-egg is another option. It is a complete replacement for detergent and fabric conditioner which uses natural mineral pellets to lift dirt and odours. It costs approximately €15 euro for 210 washes.

RESPONSIBLE LAUNDRY

Old fashioned washing soda (also known as washing crystals) is an environmentally sound option for pretreating very soiled clothes . Washing soda is also very good at reducing limescale and soap build up in your washing machine.

As mentioned, increasing the lifespan of clothes will significantly reduce their carbon footprint but nine out of ten pieces of clothing end up in landfill long before they should mainly because excessive or incorrect laundering has caused irreparable colour fading, shrinkage and misshaping. 26 West Kerry Live

FABRIC CONDITIONER Fabric conditioner essentially applies a thin waxy electrically charged

coating to your laundry. This coating makes your clothes feel softer and easier to iron but it decreases their ability to absorb water and laundry detergent (totally defeating the purpose of towels for example). It also reduces the performance of sportswear, particularly high performance sportswear that wicks away moisture. The lingering fragrance of fabric softeners (ylang-ylang or soft summer breeze anyone?) to quote the Environmental protection Agency consist of ‘a cocktail of slowdegrading volatile chemical compounds’ many of which are skin irritants, toxic and often an unrecognized source of asthma triggers. White vinegar (a quarter of a cup per wash) makes for a good natural and cheap fabric conditioner because it cuts through the detergent residue that makes clothes and towels feel rough. It does not leave a vinegar smell on your clothes but you can add a few drops of essential oils if you like scented laundry. DRYING You know that you have reached peak adulthood when you look out the window on a sunny breezy day and hear yourself saying that it is a great day out for drying. Line drying is the cheapest (free!) and most environmentally friendly way to dry and air clothes but we live in Ireland so it is not always a viable option. Clothes horses and inside clothes lines are both good alternatives (just ensure proper ventilation as drying clothes indoors can be a contributor to breathing difficulties particularly for asthma sufferers). Using a tumble dryer should be a last resort. In addition to using a lot of energy to operate they are very damaging to clothes (the contents of your lint filter is the proof your clothes are literally falling apart from tumble drying). Consider using dryer wool balls if you do need to use the tumble dryer. These are solid balls of felted wool which lift and separate clothes in the dryer, shortening the drying time and saving energy. The natural lanolin also softens laundry, reduces static and essential oils can be used with them to scent your laundry instead of using toxic, non-degradable dryer sheets.

Lispole stars on show at the Allianz Kerry Cumann na mBunscol Championships Con Dennehy

WE’RE HIRING! Magical, iconic, explosive, heroic and spectacular were just some of the accolades directed at children attending a number of Kerry Primary School who were top of the class when it came to sporting success at the weekend. Lispole was the venue on Friday night for the Kerry Cumann na mBunscol Handball finals, sponsored by Allianz, which saw competitions for Under 11 and Under 13 with the Kerry winners progressing to the Munster finals taking place in Tipperary shortly. Following some exciting games in the opening rounds the main winners at the championships were Scoil Eoin Baiste Lispole and Glenbeigh National School each claiming two titles with Curraheen National School in Glenbeigh winning one title. Scoil Eoin Baiste was in devastating form with the Boys Under 11 Singles tile won by Thomas O’Gealbhan. The highlight of the night came in Boys Under 13 Doubles final where Jamie O’Lionsigh and Padraig O’Mainnin (Scoil Eoin Baiste Lispole) defeated Cathal Griffin and Liam O’Connor (Curraheen National School, Glenbeigh) 11-9, 11-3 in a thrilling contest. While the first game was relatively close, the Lispole side sealed the championship with a devastating display of aggressive and tactical play to take the title. They will now represent Kerry at the Munster finals in Tipperary.

What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís We have an important event planned for Thursday, 13th February in Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne from 18:00 - 20:00. Come join us for the launch of Corca Dhuibhne 2030 / Dingle Peninsula 2030. It is your opportunity to be part of this exciting initiative. Who are we? The Dingle Creativity and Innovation Hub, ESB Networks, MaREI, the SFI Research Centre for Energy, Climate and Marine, and North East West Kerry Development (NEWKD) formed a working group for this initiative in mid-2018. Why are we doing this? This group is actively working with the local community schools, business, tourism and farming sector to support the societal changes required for the low carbon transition. Within this, the Dingle Hub is also working to identify employment opportunities and create a sustainable economic future for the Peninsula. This event will be the first in a series of events, workshops and information sessions for 2020, all supported by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Discover funding. Fuinnimh 2030 will bring you information, tips and practical advice to help you make informed decisions about your energy future. The exciting line-up includes: An introduction to your Community Energy Mentors. Since November, 10 members of the community have undertaken training to gain insights into energy efficiency, related technologies and funding mechanisms. They

have met with experts in the various areas and are equipped to help find the answers to your questions. They are here to help so come and meet them and share your queries to help build our local pool of knowledge. The launch of the Dingle Peninsula Energy Master plan. We know that we are using 315GWh each year on the Peninsula at a cost of €37M. The plan will help guide our collective energy choices to reduce our energy use to 224GWh with a saving of €8M and a 43% reduction in our energy related CO2 emissions. Apply to be part of the ESB Networks Electric Vehicle (EV) trials, come and meet with them to discuss your application and bring it to the next stage. Students from Meanscoil Nua an Leith-Triuigh, Coláiste Íde & Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne worked on a Climate Hack last November and will showcase the ideas to tackle local challenges that emerged from this. Current Challenges need to be discussed and positive sustainable solutions found. Letters to the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport include: Ref: Traffic Management Plan for the Dingle Peninsula

Ref: Cruise Tourism on the Dingle Peninsula

Ref: Dingle Peninsula VEDP Steering Group

“We are writing to you officially to request the opportunity to be a part of the discussions regarding the traffic and congestion challenges on the Dingle Peninsula from the beginning of the upcoming Traffic Management Plan, throughout the process and not towards the end of the study, feasibility and / or planning stage when it now seems the public consultation period might be introduced. Most of all though, the urgency must reflect and acknowledge the issues that are arising for our communities and villages along these routes the last number of years and immediate ways to rectify them.” - Excerpt.

“that the Dingle Peninsula is happy to welcome cruise ships provided they are docked at Dingle Pier and of a small size and scale of ships such as National Geographic carrying up to 150 passengers. Dingle town and the peninsula does not have the infrastructure to become a cruise destination or to be opened up to large scale cruise tourism particularly on top of the current traffic and congestion issues on the Dingle Peninsula.” - Excerpt

“Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance welcomes and supports the upcoming Dingle Peninsula VEDP and is very happy to have up to 4 representatives on the Steering Committee that is being formed for the implementation of the Plan. However, there are a few concerns about introducing another Committee / Group for its implementation as it is felt, it will create confusion on the peninsula regarding tourism roles. There is a precedent here on this ...” Excerpt.

So You Want To Be A Writer Paula Hand

#DinglePeninsula #CorcaDhuibhne

Then write: Make writing a hobby. Start with a hundred words a day, and once developed, aim for higher. You can lose yourself in your phone for over half an hour without realising and yet taping away on the keyboard seems an impossible task. Can you imagine how many words you could write instead of scrolling; two or three hundred I’m sure.

“There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.” - Ernest Hemmingway.

Don’t worry about your grammar, spellings, or sentence structure on your first draft. Allow whatever story you’re writing to flow. Editing is for later.

Do you have a story hidden deep inside that one day you’ll type it out or write it down, but never have?

Take pleasure in the first draft: Enjoy what you are writing before the editing begins. If you’re bored with your character or story, then your readers will be too.

What’s stopping you from taking that step? Doubt. Grammar. Sentence structure. Forming a tale to tell. Just don’t know where to start? Let me help… Doubt: This is a killer for every courageous new beginning we ever do. It seeps through our working life, our personal life, and any time we decide to do something out of the normality of our day or society. We question what other people may think and we keep it to ourselves rather than shouting about our achievements. Yet, we talk about our children’s, family, friend’s achievements with proud words, and a smile on our faces. This simple five-letter word stops us from being what we want to be: writers. So let’s start at the beginning to banish those doubts. First research your topic: I always have a notebook for each novel I write with notes jotted down on the characters, setting, and any other information that I need while writing. Form your characters so you know what they would do in the situations you put them in. 38 West Kerry Live

Have a writing space: Whether this is with the laptop or writing pad on your lap with music on (television off), in a café with your coffee going cold and your fingers working across the keys, or in your local library where your space is free. Do what suits you and where an hour is all yours, you deserve to be a little selfish. Meet with other writers: This sounds simple, but unless we know who the other writers are, meeting with them is impossible. Writers are known to be secretive, or maybe that’s just me! We need to build support, trust to share our ideas for feedback, and to form an encouraging group. And remember, you don’t have to be published to be a writer, all you need to do is: “sit down at a typewriter and bleed.” Paula Hand: MA in Creative Writing, contact pjhand93@gmail.com for your writing questions or group meetings.

Thank you all most sincerely. OBITUARY Joseph O’Driscoll, of Stamford, Connecticut passed away peacefully at home on January 10 last. Joe was born and raised here in Camp to parents Maureen and Patrick O’Driscoll R.I.P. Joe was a real gentleman in every sense of the word and the news of his death was received with sadness in Camp. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1966 where he met and married his wife Patricia in 1971. He was employed by Goldman Sachs as a systems analyst and retired in 2009. He is survived by his wife and their six children Mike, Sean , Liam, Andy, Matt, and Katie; his grandchildren Claire, Seamus, Aidan, Rian, Maeve, Aoife, and Tadhg; and his siblings Mícheál, Gene, Peggy, Mary, Anne, Patcheen, Bernie, and Seamus. Joe was predeceased by his beloved granddaughter Ciara, his brothers Sean and Vincent, and his nephew Brendan. Joe loved sports and coming from a great GAA family, the O'Driscolls of Camp, he too was a good footballer playing with Annascaul and West Kerry in his youth and later in New York and Boston. In retirement, he was devoted to his grandchildren and enjoyed walking, watching sports, gardening, and going to church. He always looked forward to his yearly trip back to Ireland. His family was everything to him. Requiem Mass for Joe was celebrated on Saturday, January 18 at St. Bridget of Ireland Church in Stamford. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Bennett Cancer Center who lovingly took care of Joe is appreciated: https://www. stamfordhospitalfoundation.org/foundation/ programs/bennett-cancer-center/ Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

Sausage and Chorizo Ragu Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School This is a great dish for any evening meal. I find for this dish large sausages will work better. Chorizo always adds a little kick to meals, a simple tip for chorizo is; if you are cooking with chorizo try to look out for fresh or raw chorizo as it won’t dry as much as the cured variety. If you can find the fresh or raw chorizo used the cured chorizo but cut it into large chunks.

Once you have made this a few times and if you want to change it up a little try adding black or white putting when adding the chickpeas or add some spinach in the last minutes. Ingredients 500g of large sausages (preferably Italian style or cumberland) 2 large red onion, diced 3 cloves of garlic, peeled and sliced 150g of fresh/raw chorizo, sliced ½ tsp smoked paprika 1 tbsp of tomato purée 200ml of red wine 1 tin of chickpeas 1 tin of plum tomatoes 150ml of chicken stock rapeseed oil salt and pepper handful of basil leaves Method Heat a casserole pot over medium to high heat. Once hot add a little oil then add the sausages. Allow the sausages to brown on all sides. Once they have browned remove them from the pot and add the red onions, turn the heat down a little and allow them to cook for about 5 minutes or so. Add the garlic and continue to cook. After a few minutes add the chorizo and paprika. After a minute or so add the tomato puree, cook the puree for about 2 minutes then add the wine, allow the wine to reduce by half. Add the chickpeas, tomatoes and the stock. Season all of this with salt and pepper. Place on a medium heat and cook for about 20-25 minutes. Taste and season and add the basil leaves to serve. CARTAÍ. The Annual 31 Card Drive by Féile Na Bealtaine will be held on Sunday February 9th in the Dingle Pub commencing at 6p.m. Experienced players and novices most welcome.

RACE NIGHT. The Annual Race Night to raise funds for the NYE Fireworks Display will be held in McCarthys Bar on Saturday February 1st commencing at 9.30p.m. Horses are still available for purchase at Sheehys Spar or from Gary Curran or Daniel McCarthy. Entry is free and an enjoyable evenings entertainment is assured for racing or non racing fans as prior equine knowledge does not guarantee success at a race night. RETIREMENT. Congratulations and many years of happy retirement to Denis Murphy who recently completed 20 years of dedicated service with Dingle Fire Brigade. Maith thú Denis.

BUSINESS CHAMBER. The Annual General Meeting of the Dingle Business Chamber will be held during the last week in February with further details to be confirmed in our next edition. We certainly need more people involved in the running of the Chamber. We particularly need fresh ideas as other towns seem to have greater involvement from a wide range of people with more visable participation and success. SLÁN TAMALL!!!

AWARDS. Congratulations to Elouise Flannery one of Dingle's talented artists on having her entry selected as winner in the Kerryman Sponsored Art and Dignity competition. The entry titled Immortal Love will now be one of the 5 winners positioned and installed in University Hospital Kerry's most sensitive areas. Dingle Food Festival was this week nominated by the Irish Independant's readers as Ireland's Favourite Food Experience. The paper published a glowing report in last Saturday's edition on the overall organisation and atmosphere during the Festival as well as the huge effort to reduce and eventually eliminate waste throughout the weekend. ELECTION. Just a few more days to go and I urge all elegible people to come out and cast your vote as we only get the chance every 4 or 5 years. I think it is important to talk to the canvassers in a constructive way and let them know your solutions to the many problems facing our country at present. Good luck to all who put their names before the electorate as we appear to have a particularly good choice on the Kerry ballot paper again this year. TIDY TOWNS. The annual County Clean Up Day has been fixed for Saturday March 28th so a date for your diary and no excuses accepted this

Wear a unique piece of Irish history when you choose an Ogham Pendant from Brian de Staic, the originator of Ogham Jewellery.

Paula Hand from Kinard West, Lispole, graduating from University of Limerick with a Masters of Arts in Creative Writing with First Class Honours.

Film Review 1917 Tom Ó Neachtain 1917 is director Sam Mendes’ new film which is a tribute to his grandfather who fought in World War One. It follows a soldier who is tasked with the near impossible mission of bringing a crucial message across the front lines. Sam Mendes might have lost track of what made him popular with 2015’s James Bond caper ‘Spectre’ but with 1917 he delivers a boundary-pushing film that has already won over audiences and critics. The main attraction from the outset is the fact that the entire film is made to look like one continuous shot. It plays out in real time and weaves its way from place to place with clever editing and great directing. Its almost like

a stage play with every actor having to know the script off-by-heart and every set and location looking meticulously crafted. Most of the film plays out with little sound so when an bomb lands or a gun is shot, you feel it. Every second of the 1 hour 59 minutes is a master-class on filmmaking. But not only the direction is top class. The ensemble cast are tremendous but George MacKay is unequalled as the soldier we follow throughout. Also, colour is used phenomenally in this film, where for example a burning city in night contrasts perfectly with the blue of a morning sky. Every new location is dripping with atmosphere and perfectly shows the passage of time. It matches the tension and conflict, bringing every scene to life. And, the score is transcendent. Thomas Newman has always worked with Sam Mendes but this time he outdid himself. 1917 is an immersive, epic, joy for the senses, that might just beat Dunkirk to the title of best war film in recent memory. What an incredible way to begin a new decade of film. Tom Ó Neachtain is a student in Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne

Ó Lá le Bríde amach, bíonn an lá ag dul i bhfaid, na héin ag déanamh nid. Is dócha gur é an lá é a laghdaíonn ar an mbaistigh agus ar na gálaí. Is beag gaoth mhór a ghaibh chugainn go dtí seo ach is mó uair a bhuail bréiste gaoithe gan coinne sna blianta tharainn. Éíríoinn gach fásra beagnach glas agus bíonn an dúlra níos cáirdiúla. Seo é an uair gur cheart go mbeadh a gcantam bia fachta ag foisce atá in uan. Is timpeal an ama a bhíonn na fiacla ag teacht dos na huain nó fóisce blaina. Bíonn faobhar ar an bhfeirmeóír cuid acu ag cur amach aoiligh agus dream eile ag braith ar an bhfeamanach nó aoileach paca, le anam a chur sa bhfásra. Uair é chomh maith go mbíonn na fir agus na mná óga ag cuimhneamh ar an bpósadh. Tagann Máirt Inide i gcan fhíos ar scata. Caid

As seo amach beidh féasta againn ar cé atá ag imirt go maith. Is dócha go mbeidh Bleá Cliaith sa chraobh arís i mbliana agus Ciarraí ullamh le iad a threascairt. Freagraí

Chuir teaspeáinteas fhoireann Chiarraí i bPáirc an Chrócaigh misneach orainn. Is trua ná raibh pointe breise againn. Is trua chomh maith a raibh do áird réiteóra mheasfá sa cead leath don gcluiche ach bhí sé cothram go leor sa dara leath. AN PHEASÁIL. Ba cheart deire a chur le pasanna a chur siar- go minic go fear an bháide. Ní chuireann sé seo le caighdeán na himeartha. Bhí Ó Donchú ar ais agus bhí faobhar ar a imirt. Tá súil agam nach gortú a bhain do mar ard fhear é nuair a bhíonn saor ó ghortaithe. Gortaíodh Brian Ó Beaglaoi ach tá súil againn go leisfidh a ghortú go luath. Ní aon dóithín beirt Fhossa agus Seán Ó Sé. Bhí an Géanach go maith mar is gnáth leis. Dar liom go raibh beartas réalta Chiarraí a chur as an imirt.

Paye Income Tax Rates 2020 Question I’m a PAYE worker. What income tax will I pay in 2020? Answer The amount of tax that you have to pay depends on your personal circumstances. Tax is charged as a percentage of your income. The amount that you actually pay depends on your income and on the tax credits and reliefs that you are eligible for. The first part of your income, up to a certain amount, is taxed at 20%. This is known as the standard rate of tax and the amount that it applies to is the standard rate tax band. If you have income above the standard rate tax band, it is taxed at the higher rate of tax, which is 40% (also called the marginal rate). The amount that you can earn before you start to pay the higher rate of tax is your standard rate cut-off point. There were no changes to tax rates and bands in 2020. The standard rate of tax is 20% and the higher rate is 40%.
