Annascaul Beerfest is a unique event in that even in its 8th year it continues to develop and evolve. It is now an event on the summer festival calendar known to many people both near and far. To recognise this fact it is now partly funded by Kerry COCO/Failte Ireland and is sponsored by Crean’s Fresh Irish Lager for a second consecutive year. In 2015, the Friday night food event will be reinvented by holding a ‘Taste Tour’ in three of the pubs in Annascaul which will see food and craft beer pairings being served. This year will see the expansion of Sunday in to ‘Funday Sunday’ with food stalls, street drumming and entertainment throughout the day and evening. There will be something for everyone this year with some family fun on Sunday with the addition of bouncy castle and face painting. There will be a headline act again in 2015 with Hermitage Green taking to the stage on Saturday 1st August – tickets can be purchased in advance on ticketstop.ie. There will be able support over the weekend from local & Irish artists such as Red Moon Bayonets and Scannal with support from the UK coming in the guise of Phillip Henry & Hannah Martin who won a BBC Radio award in 2014.Annascaul Beerfest is organised by volunteers in their own time and all the funds raised go solely to good causes and the running of the event - it donated €8,000 in 2014. It also relies on the support of the businesses and people in the community for it's continued success. The main beneficiary this year is Down Syndrome Kerry.

Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights

The featured film at the Dingle film club in the Phoenix Cinema on Tuesday 28th July will be the French-Belgian action crime thriller “The Connection”. This stylish 70’s period thriller revisits the classic territory of “The French Connection”. Telling the true story of of real-life Marseilles magistrate Pierre Michel and his relentless crusade to dismantle the most notorious drug smuggling operation in history “The Connection” is an exciting and absorbing throwback to an era of classic crime movies. The following week on Tuesday 4th August the feature will be the American comedy - drama Danny Collins. Inspired by the true story of folk singer Steve Tilston, the film stars Al Pacino, Annette Bening and Christopher Plummer. Pacino stars as aging 1970s rocker Danny Collins, who can’t give up his hard-living ways. But when his manager uncovers a 40 year-old undelivered letter written to him by John Lennon, he decides to change course and embarks on a heartfelt journey to rediscover his family, find true love and begin a second act. Pacino gives stirring central performance as Collins and is supported by an excellent supporting cast in this beautifully crafted and handsomely performed film. 4 West Kerry Live

Rock, Roots and Trad in Goat Street. McCarthy’s of Dingle will host some great live music in the coming weeks. First up on Friday 24th July is the indie/ alternative outfit Anna’s Anchor. The Alternative Rock project of Marty Ryan from Limerick, Anna’s Anchor is a clash of heart felt lyrics laced with delayed guitars and soft acoustic undertones. On Saturday 25th July The Mariannes, an urban folk band with strong Irish folk, blues and alt country roots, will take to the stage. The band are causing ripples on the folk and trad circuit thanks to their ‘Lost with All Hands’ track winning the inaugural songwriting contest at the Clancy Brothers’ Festival in 2014. On Friday 31st July the winners of the 2014 BBC Folk Award Philip Henry & Hannah Martin will grace the Goat Street stage. The duo have won widespread acclaim for their astonishing instrumental virtuosity, their genre-bending material. Phillip Henry is one of the UK’s top slide guitarists and harmonica players and over the past decade has immersed himself in the music of the Deep South of America, the traditional music of these islands and the classical Indian tradition. Hannah Martin is a singer songwriter and multi-instrumentist with a bold and beautiful singing style all her own.

Beehive Theatre Co.’s production of “Stones in his Pockets” by Marie Jones is a real gem. While I was a bit apprehensive about this play, there being only 2 actors for 12 roles, all my doubts disappeared as soon as it started as Colm Moriarty and Georoid Ó Cíobháin acted their heart out convincingly through various roles of different ages and genders. I was thoroughly entertained for the entire evening. The play is set in County Kerry and tells the story of 2 film extras as well as other locals and Hollywood hot shots. The actor’s accents were top class raging from Kerry farmer to Hollywood leading lady. Their costumes were very apt and the swift changes were done smoothly and efficiently. The sound effects were funny and added a lot to the atmosphere. While “Stones in his Pockets”is a brilliantly funny play there are some deeply moving undertones. Go see this show. You’ll laugh, be moved, have a great time and be very, very impressed. Stones In His Pockets plays at the Beehive Theatre, Cooleen, Dingle on Thursday and Sunday nights in July at 8pm. Tickets are €15 and are available from the Dingle Bookshop, Green Street

West Kerry Inspired Art To Exhibit In Dublin The West Kerry based artist David Scarff will present an exhibition of new work at the City Assembly House in South William Street in Dublin during the month of August. The formal opening will be from 5:00 – 8:00pm on 5th August and will remain on exhibit until 30th. Most of the new work has been inspired by the rugged coastline and archaeological sites of this area, including pieces whose composition is taken directly from archaeological drawings of sites such as Rahinane Castle and Dún Beag Fort.

John Street, Dingle

The metal pieces in the works were all found on the shore of Dingle Harbour.

Knowledge Transfer Measure: Excellent Opportunity to Enhance Farming Enterprises: New details of the Knowledge Transfer Advisor Application emerged last week. This Knowledge Transfer will provide farmers with an excellent opportunity to enhance their enterprises by developing a tailored Farm Improvement Plan through one to one discussion between the farmer and his/her facilitator and veterinary practitioner. A lot of consultation with a wide range of stakeholders helped develop this “scheme” or measure which will benefit not just the individual farmers participating but also each of farming sectors concerned. Funding of €100m has been allocated for 27,000 farmers participating for 3 years in Knowledge Transfer Groups across the dairy, beef, equine, sheep, tillage and poultry sectors. The measure provides the opportunity for Department approved facilitators to apply to run dairy, beef and equine Knowledge Transfer Groups. The measure involves Department approved groups operating over a three year period with farmer meetings involving the exchange of information and best practices facilitated by qualified advisors. Facilitators and vets will also assist participating farmers in the completion of a tailored Farm Improvement Plan that will address issues such as profitability, sustainability, animal health and welfare and farm safety The full Terms and Conditions and list of approved advisors will be made available as soon as possible after the 21st August closing date for the receipt of Knowledge Transfer Group applications. Farmer information meetings will also be held at this time. Coveney Calls for Further Action by Commission on Dairy Market Support Measures The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Simon Coveney has called on the EU Commission to take further action on dairy market support measures. The Minister was speaking in Brussels where he attended a meeting of the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council of Ministers. During discussions on developments in other market sectors, Ministers also discussed the pig meat sector. Minister The Irish and EU pig meat sector has been particularly badly affected by the Russian ban The Commission has been asked to monitor market developments and fully assess all potential market support measures available. Ministers also discussed the EU School Milk and School fruit scheme, GMO’s, and an initiative on Climate Change introduced by the French Minister for Agriculture. Speaking on Climate Change the Minister said “we need to urgently develop a coherent and realistic approach to the twin challenges of climate change and food security. Last October the basic principle of a new EU policy on climate and food security was adopted in the Council Conclusions and we now need to turn these principles into practical policies which support the sustainable intensification of food production. This must include encouragement for carbon storage on agricultural land and in forestry “. Consultation Process on Country of Origin Labelling of Non-Prepacked Meat A public consultation process was recently launched on the extension of mandatory country of origin labelling rules to non-prepacked meat. Such information is already provided for beef sold loose without packaging, but not for other meats. This is a further step in providing consumers with more practical information regarding the origin of the meat they consume. EU regulations for mandatory origin labelling refer only to pre-packed meat, but also allow Member States to go further and extend the same rules to ’loose‘ non-prepacked meat. I believe this can be done at little extra cost, using existing traceability systems, and that it would be warmly welcomed by consumers. At the same time, it is important that stakeholders, including consumers, retailers, farmers and processors, have the opportunity to input to the development of these new rules and to identify any concerns they may have. This is the purpose of the consultation launched today and I would encourage all parties to contribute. The proposed new rules would cover unprocessed meat from pigs, poultry, sheep and goats, and are being considered by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine in conjunction with the Department of Health. These rules for loose meat would mean that consumers would be informed as to the EU Member State or third country where the animals concerned are reared and slaughtered. €3M Grant Scheme to Support Collaborative Farming The new grant scheme providing financial support for collaborative farming initiatives is to be funded under Ireland’s Rural Development Programme. The benefits of Partnership of collaborative farming are well documented and include improved work/life balance; greater efficiency; addressing land mobility and, most importantly, facilitating smoother intergenerational succession. The aim of this grant scheme is to encourage the establishment of new farm partnership arrangements by con-

tributing to the the legal, advisory and financial services costs incurred by farmers in the drawing up of their farm partnership agreement. Already there are more than 850 farm partnerships who have applied to be placed on the new register since it opened in April, with some 550 being former milk production partnerships. The vast majority of the 300 new partnerships, crossing all enterprises, will be contacted in the coming weeks regarding this Scheme and advised that it is open for application. Traditionally farm partnerships in Ireland were considered only for the dairy sector and the only form of collaborative arrangement was the farm partnership to the exclusion of other types. This scheme opens farm partnerships to all farm enterprise and should make a valuable contribution to improving farm viability into the future. Agricultural Sprayer Operator Training Farmers will be required to put all tractor-mounted and trailed sprayers through a new NCT-style testing regime and undergo spray training under new rules due in November 2016. Up to 40,000 farmers will be affected by a raft of new regulations to be implemented as part of the Sustainable Use Directive. To meet this requirement and anticipated demand, a number of training events have occurred and continue to happen through-out the county. Please take this seriously, as if you have no training certificate or “ticket” a merchant must refuse to supply you with any agri-chemicals. Training for ‘professional users’ which includes farmers, crop growers, foresters and others, will consist of around 25 hours of training. The training will teach farmers how best to handle, dilute and mix chemicals before they are applied to crops, as well as how to deal with the remnants of pesticides, disposal of tank contents and cleaning of equipment used after spraying. Sprayer operation and calibration will also be included. The ultimate aim is to prevent pesticides being released into the environment. Depending on the equipment farmers will be using, the training course could run over three to five days and refresher training will be required every three years or so. Courses taking place in Dingle catering for local farmers will be advertised in these pages. All farmers operating spraying equipment are advised to book early. Sheep Notes Grassland: June and July are probably the most challenging months for keeping grass leafy and highly digestible. Encouraging leafy growth and suppressing stem is key to achieving high levels of animal performance off grass swards in addition to setting them up for the autumn. In rotationally grazed swards, aim to allow lambs into grass heights of around 8cm and move them on once sward height reaches 6cm (i.e., post-grazing sward height of 6cm). For set stocking situations aim to keep sward height at around 7-8cm for July. Once lambs are moved out of swards it is essential that they are grazed out fully to maintain grass quality into August/September. Because the lambs will be moved out of swards at around 6cm it is necessary to get other stock to graze out the sward fully (down to 4cm). If there is no stock on the farm that can do this job, then the sward will need to be mowed/topped down to 4-5cm. Much of the topping carried out on farms is cosmetic, as the blades of the topper/ mower are set too high. In order to be effective the topping should remove as much stemmy material as possible. The topper should be set to remove all grass above 4.5cm. Replacements: Weaning time is the best time to select replacements from the flock. Maintaining a closed flock has advantages in terms of reducing the risk of buying in disease, so it makes sense to keep your own replacements. If potential ewe lambs have been identified at birth, then weaning time is the ideal opportunity to go through these and pick out the best ones. However, even where this has not happened it is still a good idea to go through the ewe lambs at weaning time. It is not terribly important if they are singles or twins (but there is an advantage in picking well grown twins). What is important is that their dam did a good job rearing them. It is also important to keep enough replacements. As a general rule, 25% is a good number as it allows for culling of some inferior hoggets later on. Weaning: The optimum age to wean lambs at is 100 days or 14 weeks. Therefore, July is the optimum time for most mid-March lambing flocks to wean their lambs. Keeping the lambs on the ewes any longer will not benefit either ewe or lamb performance. Weaning allows the best grass on the farm to be offered to the lambs without them having to compete with the ewes. Weaning also allows the ewes to recuperate and regain body weight in anticipation of the next breeding season. The target weaning weight for lambs sired by terminal sire breeds is 34kg. It is a good idea to weigh a proportion of your lambs to see how they compare. If lambs are significantly below this target the possible reasons for this should be investigated. Potential reasons are: poor grassland management; poor ewe condition at/post lambing; disease/parasites; and, poor genetics in ewe/ram flocks. Consider putting a plan in place to rectify any issues for next year. For further information contact:- Louis Murchan 087-2857938

A very pleasant though at times sad event occurred recently in Páirc an Chrócaigh when Coiste Chuimhneacháin Pháidí Uí Shé presented the museum in Croke Park with a bust of the late Páidí Ó Sé. The bust was donated by Seamus Connolly, Sculptor from County Clare to the Committee. In accepting the bust Aogán Ó Fearghaill, President of the GAA expressed the appreciation of the Croke Park Museum and said it would be on display alongside other awards and memorabilia of the Ó Sé clan for the many visitors to see. Scéala ón Díseart Pádraig Ó Fiannachta Is trua liom gur chaitheas éirí as An Sagart, ráitheachán beag Chumann na Sagart a eagrú agus a fhoilsiú. Bhí sin ar siul agam ar feadh ceithre bliana agus daichead. Níor éirigh linn comharba a fháil orm. Is dócha go raibh sé ceart agam éirí as i bhfad roimhe sin. Bhíodh cóipeanna breise ar fáil i séipéil pharóiste an Daingin agus Bhaile an Fhirtéaraigh in aisce i gcúl na séipéal. Is dócha go mbíonn nithe ag baint leis na paróistí agam níos tráthúla sa coicíseán breá seo. An scéal mór sa dá pharóiste ar ndóigh is ea go bhfuil an Canónach Tomás Ó Luanaigh ag imeacht ón nDaingean go paróiste Fosa i gcóngar Chill Airne, mar a mbeidh sé ina shagart paróiste. Braithimid uainn é agus guímid gach beannacht air i mbun a dhualgais ansiúd. Ba bhreá bríomhar a bhí sé anseo ár spreagadh agus ár misniú. Ad multos et felicisimos annos—go raibh blianta fada fé ghrásta Dé agus fé lúcháir aige. Go bhfeice sé Ciarraí go buacach i bPáirc an Chrócaigh i mbliana. Cuirimid na trucailí fáilte roimh ár sagart paróiste nua, an tAthair Seosamh Ó Beaglaoi ón nGarrán a tháínig in áit an Athar Tomás i gCill Choimín nuair a tháinig seisean chugainne. Bhí aithne mhaith agam air i Maigh Nuad marar chaith sé cúig bliana ag staidéar na n-ealaíon agus na diagachta nuair a d’fhreagair sé an ghairm chun na sagartóireachta agus é faoin am sin ag múíneadh scoile i gcathair Luimní. Fág go bhfuil deireadh le An Sagart, táim ag leanúint orm leis an bhfoilsitheoireacht. Tá Léachtaí Cholm Cille XLV foilsithe agam go luath i mbliana; lean sárleabhar é sin Saol agus Saothar Phiarais Mhic Gearailt leis an Dr. Breandán Ó Cróinin atá ina léachtóir le Gaeilge i gColáiste Mhuire gan Smál, Luimneach. Bhí aithne mhaith againne i mBaile Móir ar a athair críonna, Diarmaid Ó Cróinín a thagadh go Tigh Cháití Shé ag foghlaim Gaeilge nuair a bhíos i bhfad níos óige. Tugaim na leabhair go léir a fhoilsím do leabharlann Chiarraí sa Daingean le cur le mo bhailiúchán ansiúd. Ní féidir leabhar a thógaint ar iasacht as an mbailiúchán sin gan cead uaim féin fad is beo dom ach tá seomra dá gcuid féin acu le bord agus cathaoireacha do léitheoirí. Tá leabhar eile ó pheann Phádraig Uí Éalaithe sa phreas fé láthair An Blascaod trí Fhuinneog na Scoile, bláthfhleasc aoibhinn de sríbhinní a mháthar a chaith tamall ag múíneadh i scoil an Bhlascaoid. Tá sé chomh agam an Magnum Opus le Máirín Uí Chonchúir atá le foilsiú againn roimh dheireadh na bliana, Tuir agus Crainn, a lua le go mbeadh bialanna an Daingin ag réiteach áit fé leith dó mar beidh sé mór toirtiúil lena lán grianghrafanna.

News from the Díseart The big news for many of our readers is that Canon Tomás Ó Luanaigh is leaving us, not for retirement but to become parish priest of Fossa. We will miss his kind and gentle pastoral care and leadership. We wish him many happy years in his new parish where he will be working on his own as he has been in Dingle for some years. He is being replaced by Fr. Seosamh Ó Beaglaoi {Joe Begley) from our neighbouring parish. He was a national degreed teacher before he answered the call to the priesthood. As a priest he taught in St. Brendans for some time before being appointed parish priest of Kilcummin. Cuirimid céad míle fáilte roimis agus guímid saol fada fé shláine agus fé ghrá Dé dó. 20 West Kerry Live

Léiriú ceannródaíoch ar dhráma goinbhlasta, tagtha go dtí An LAB

Ceaití Ní Bheildiúin Nuair a threoraítear sinn, an lucht féachana, ó sheomra feithimh in amharclann An Lab, go dtí doras shuíomh an léirithe, buailtear balbh sinn. Seasann cailín óg ó ghlúin eile romhainn. Leanaimid í isteach go tigh níocháin, trí fhoirgneamh a bhfuil atmaisféar diamhair inti. Déantar finnéithe dínn láithreach ar na himeachtaí anseo. Tuigeann na cailíní a mhaireann agus a oibríonn anseo gur ina ngéibheannaigh atá siad. Tá deis ag bean óg cabhrú leo ach an ceart di agus malairt treoracha fachta aici? Croíbhriseadh agus an dóchas de shíor ag iarraidh nochtadh tríd. Iarrtar orainn gach taobh den scéal a mheá, féachaint cá luíonn an ceart, an chóir is an fhírinne. Suite i dtigh níocháin Mhaigdléine sna seascaidí is léiriú cumhachtach thar a bheith ceannródaíoch atá anseo, ar scéal a éilíonn deora agus gáire araon orainn ón gcéad nóiméat. Ní gnáthstáitsíocht atá i gceist ach léiriú i sainsuíomh, áit ina bhfuil bá ag na fallaí féin le bunsuíomh instiúide an scéil. Is féidir site-specific a luaidh leis ós rud é go bhfuil An Lab mar chuid de seanfhoirgneamh a bhíodh ina mhéanscoil ag na Bráithre Críostaí. Tá aisteoireacht den chéad scoth ann, aisteoireacht go mbeadh sé deacair í a shárú ar aon stáitse ar domhan: ochtar ban idir óg agus aosta - dílleachtaithe, máithreacha óga, bean chríonna is rian de shaol instidiúide uirthi, nóibhíseach agus máthair oirbhinneach. Tá gach duine acu an-oiriúnach agus an-nádúrtha dá ról féin. Imríonn ceol agus amhránaíocht páirt nach beag tríd an dráma ar fad. Tá ámhráin ag Bernie Pháid ó cheantar Chorca Dhuibhne le clos ann, i dteannta le hamhráin de chuid Elvis Presley agus Kathleen Ferrier. Níl aon ghné den seó nach bhfuil tomhaiste agus nochtaithe le scil dochreidte, faoi stiúir Áine Moynihan. Is léir misneach agus muinín Moynihan nuair a dhírimid ar shoilsiú an dráma. Úsáidtear solas nádúrtha an lae d’fhonn atmaisféar réalaíoch a chruthú. Braithimid leochaileach faoin solas seo, chomh leochaileach agus a bhíodh na cailíní féinig b’fhéidir. ’S í Patricia Burke Brogan a scríobh ECLIPSED, bunleagan Béarla an dráma, luath sna nóchaidí agus í féin tar éis tréimhse ghairid dá hóige a chaitheamh ina nóibhíseach ag obair i dtigh níocháin Mhaigdléine. D’éirigh sí as na mná rialta agus í fós óg. Tá blas na fírinne le fáil ar a saothar. Helen Ní Shé a d’aistrigh an script go Gaeilge.

Dietary factors that contribute to Osteoporosis include low-calcium intake, high intake of phosphorous (found in fizzy drinks) and refined sugar. High protein diets and too much acid forming foods and trace mineral deficiencies are also a factor. High protein diets strongly advocated for weight-loss and body building need to be reviewed to ensure the long-term health of our skeletal frame is not compromised by the short-term gains of these type of diets. Understanding the pH of food is an important aspect of eating for healthy bones. When food is digested it leaves a residual ash which can be either acid, neutral or alkaline. Essentially, an alkaline diet is a plant-based fare of vegetables, fruit, some nuts, seeds and legumes while avoiding the overconsumption of meat, dairy products and processed foods. You do not have to exclude all meat and dairy foods but ideally should aim for no less than 80% of your food coming from plants. If in doubt, look at the elephant - big, strong bones and completely vegetarian!

Another factor, particularly of concern to younger and older women who may restrict dietary fat, is that many of the nutrients required for bone health are dependent on healthy fats for their absorption and assimilation into the body. In younger and older adults, a nutritious diet helps preserve bone mass and strength. For those who have had a fracture, it speeds and aids recovery and reduces the risk of having another fracture.

!

At every stage of life a nutritious, balanced diet promotes strong, healthy bones. A bone-friendly diet includes sufficient calories and adequate protein, fat and carbohydrates, as well as vitamins and minerals - particularly vitamin D and K and minerals- calcium, magnesium and boron. In childhood and adolescence, proper nutrition helps to build peak bone mass (maximum bone density, attained in the early 20’s) thereby reducing vulnerability to osteoporosis later in life. This is not to say that there are not measures available to older adults but puberty is the optimum time in our lives to build great bones! Fad dieting and increased consumption of fizzy drinks, caffeinated beverages and junk food, most associated with the teenage years, are a recipe for poor bone strength and inhibit the absorption of bone building nutrients at this critical time of growth.

Osteoporosis is a debilitating disease whereby the density and quality of bone are reduced. The skeleton weakens, and the risk of fractures greatly increases. Approximately one out of three women over 50 will have a fracture due to osteoporosis as will one out of five men over 50. Although genetic factors largely determine the size and density of your bones, lifestyle factors such as good nutrition, regular exercise, and avoiding smoking and excess alcohol also play a key role.

creased incidences of rickets – a malformation and softening of bones due to vitamin D deficiency in children. The importance of individual vitamin D status and requirements needs to be widely recognized, not only in babies but at all stages of life. Routine testing and correct supplement dosages can have a positive impact not only on our bone health but also on the prevention and management of many modern chronic diseases from cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, multiple sclerosis and mental health disorders. In the meantime, enjoy a varied, mainly plant-based diet and regular outdoor exercise for enduring, strong bones and the greater quality of life that comes with them.

Calcium and other bone-strengthening minerals are pulled from bone reserves when the body needs to correct pH imbalances within the body. Diets high in sodium and acidic ash promotes calcium removal from the bones and results in an increase of calcium loss in urine. Fizzy drinks contain phosphates which require calcium to correct the balance of calcium and phosphates in the blood. Again, calcium is pulled from the bones to correct this imbalance. Most bone-health guidelines are focused on the inclusion of calcium-rich foods, yet more education is needed to highlight the many foods which promote the loss of calcium from bones. Kelp, seaweeds, tofu, green leafy vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, kale, sprouts, collard greens and sesame and pumpkin seeds provide more nutrients for bone health than any other natural wholefood. Not only are they rich in calcium, they also provide, boron, magnesium and vitamin K while maintaining the body’s alkalinity. Although calcium supplements are available, there is no comparison between consuming a broad range of bone building nutrients from your plate rather than a single mineral from a bottle. Vitamin D also plays a key role in optimum absorption of calcium whether it is from a food source or supplement. In recent years the Department of Health has recommended that all babies are given supplemental vitamin D for the first year of life in response to the in22 West Kerry Live

The National Rowing Championships are held at the National Rowing Centre, Farran Wood, Ovens, Co. Cork annually on the 10th to 13th of July. The events on offer comprise of underage races with championships, so called ‘pots’ events for under18 categories and over. Last year Killorglin Rowing Club took a victory in one championship event, that was the Women’s Intermediate Double Scull where Monika Dukarska and Fiola Foley set a new course record for this event and won the club’s 13th championship to date. This year, Cathal O’Donovan represented the Club in one of three championship events that Conor Murphy with coach the club entered. He raced the Men’s Mike Fleming Junior 18 Single Sculls qualifying for the semi-final however missing out on the Final A placing. Tara O’Connor and her twin sister Marie raced the second championship event which was the Women’s Junior 18 double scull. The girls raced very well and finished 5th in their heat. Unfortunately the time was not quick enough to qualify for the final later that afternoon. Cathal also raced in the Men’s Lightweight category against some ex-Irish international athletes. We had 4 single scullers entered in the Men’s Junior 15 event with Conor Murphy taking the gold medal ahead of Michael O’Connor who finished 2nd in one of the finals. Sean Houlihan and Shane O’Connor battled it out in the second final of this event coming 2nd and 3rd respectively. Conor Murphy took the first championship medal for the Club. The Women’s Junior 15 quad represented by Anna Tyther, Molly O’Grady, Rhiannon O’Donoghue and Mara Treacy coxed by Stephen O’Sullivan raced superb in this event finishing 3rd overall. The girls also raced in the Women’s Junior 14 quad missing out by a bow ball to a Lee Rowing Club crew. It was a very exciting race, well rowed and very competitive. Saturday morning began with the Men’s Club Single Scull event, yet another championship event entered by the Club. Killorglin RC was represented by Cathal O’Donovan, who came second in his heat and 4th in his semi-final. It was a great achievement for Cathal as he continually improves as a single sculler. Another win for Killorglin RC came from our Men’s Junior 15 quad crew of Connor Murphy, Sean Houlihan, Michael O’Connor, Shane O’Connor and their cox Stephen O’Sullivan. The boys were dominant in their race showing power and confidence from the first stroke. The Club also entered the Women’s Club 2 single sculls and was represented by Tara and Marie O’Connor. Tara finished 1st in her heat with Marie placing 3rd both progressing to semi-final. Tara placed 4th and Marie placed 5th in their semi-final, missing out on the place in the final. The Club had also good results in the Men’s J16 Single Sculls event. We had three entries and we were represented by our under15 boys: Conor Murphy who placed 4th in his heat and Michael O’Connor who placed 3rd in another heat. Sean Houlihan placed 2nd in his heat securing a place in a semi-final. It was a very successful weekend for the Club. The National level is very competitive and it takes a lot of time and commitment to represent the Club at such a high level. Well done to all our junior athletes on their great results. The victories were well deserved and any disappointments will be rectified in the 2015/2016 season. Go Killorglin!

Great Kerry team? Maybe not. Contenders? Absolutely. Tadhg Evans If episode one of this year’s Munster Final could be sourced as the motion against Kerry’s hopes of All-Ireland glory in 2015, Saturday evening’s renewal might just have been the counterargument. With the exception of Kieran Donaghy and Johnny Buckley, none of the Kingdom’s starting fifteen would have been disappointed with their own individual performance. If the Kerry defence was pliable last time out, that certainly wasn’t the case on Saturday. Cork are not lacking in firepower, but they failed to score once the 45th minute had elapsed. The talented Brian Hurley didn’t actually score at all, in either game. Shane Enright’s next of kin can be rightly proud. ‘This isn’t a great Kerry team’ was the confident declaration made by Joe Brolly in the aftermath of the teams’ original skirmish. It’s not the most controversial articulation that the Derryman has ever made. The fact that no response has been forthcoming from Kerry’s normally easily offended population gives a certain backing to his claim. But such a complacent performance will not be seen from the Kingdom again this summer, even against Fermanagh or Westmeath next time out. Brolly might not be wrong in saying that Kerry don’t have a great team at their disposal right now, but he stopped short of saying they weren’t All-Ireland contenders. That might yet prove a wise move on Brolly’s part. The decision to confer the game’s ‘Man of the Match’ award on James O’Donoghue has caused notable disquiet, and rightly so. Enright, Maher, Moran, Lyne, Sheehan, Walsh and Geaney could all be argued to have supplied superior contributions. You could argue that Cooper was also more influential upon his introduction, as the Kingdom moved seamlessly from the long ball tactic that had been in operation during Donaghy’s stint. That’s not to say that O’Donoghue had a poor outing, he didn’t, but it is indicative of an obvious improvement from the Kingdom’s service men throughout the acreage of Fitzgerald Stadium. This might not be the most gifted panel in Kerry’s history, but what they do have is an intelligent, adaptable group of footballers that can ably realise the ploys of Eamonn Fitzmaurice. They also have bottle. This is a much maligned cluster, but they’re All-Ireland champions. Judging by what’s been produced by the opposition over the last two weekends, they might still be by the time winter sets in. Last year’s All-Ireland Championship was declared a foregone conclusion long before last year’s semi-finals took place. Sam was to remain in the capital for years to come. Yet, when Dublin came up against the Donegal blanket, they were left to choke on wool, for all their undoubted attacking ability. Worse still, Donegal had enough ability in the final third to burgle the ghost estate that was the Dublin defence. A week ago, Dublin had their first opportunity to prove that they had learned something from that humbling day out. 28 West Kerry Live

Westmeath do not have anything like the staff available to Donegal, but they limited Dublin to fifteen scores, eleven less than the 26 the Dubs had averaged in the two games prior to that, against a similar level of opposition. The Lakesiders overturned possession with regularity, and Dublin’s attack flailed for much of the encounter. But Westmeath are not All-Ireland contenders, and, understandably, had nothing by way of an attacking plan. That they only managed to score seven points had nothing to do with excellent defending from the Dubs. The ghost estate was still unoccupied, but Westmeath did not have the know-how or the human resources to break and enter. Donegal have already proven that they can meet those requirements. The Kerry team of 2015 could yet do the same. If Kerry needn’t fear Dublin, then the

weekend that has just passed suggests they needn’t fear the men from Tír Chonaill either. Michael Murphy might well be the best footballer in the country, but he has now failed to score a point from play in the last three Ulster finals. He was similarly ineffective against Kerry in last year’s national showpiece. That’s not a poor reflection on Murphy, it simply owes to good planning. Donegal haven’t been terminated, but they’re staggering along a dark alley clasping a stab wound after their altercation with Monaghan on Sunday. Though they have paired their blanket with a piquant counter attack ably for some five years, when that same weaponry is in the hands of the opposition they have never responded convincingly. They didn’t last Sunday, and they certainly didn’t against Kerry last year.

Mayo could yet be the team to pose Kerry with the most beguiling questions, but that’s not to say Kerry should be stiflingly wary. The Westerners should probably have advanced to last year’s final at Kerry’s expense, but they only really managed to outclass the Kingdom in the second half of their first meeting. In the 35 minutes that predated that pummelling, Kerry had the upper hand. Cormac Reilly might well have been the replay’s decisive factor, but Kerry performed very well and never looked obviously inferior to Mayo. The weekend just gone could hardly have been kinder to the Kerry cause, which applies to events that were in their hands, and those happening many miles away. Not a great Kerry team? Arguably true. Not AllIreland contenders? Inarguably false.

The Commission is proposing a strengthened right to be forgotten so that if you no longer want your personal data to be processed, and there is no legitimate reason for an organisation to keep it, it must be removed from their system. The onus of proof is being shifted from us the users to the companies who are collecting the data. Data controllers e.g. Facebook and Google must prove that they need to keep the data rather than you having to prove that collecting your data is not necessary. Providers must take account of the principle of ‘privacy by default’, which means that the default settings should be those that provide the most privacy. Companies will be obliged to inform you as clearly, understandably and transparently as possible about how your personal data will be used, so that you are in the best position to decide what data you share. They will also make sure that when users give their consent for companies to use their personal data, that agreement is given explicitly and with their full awareness. This will give users control over their data, and help foster trust in the online environment. To me, this is a welcome and necessary development. With the recent debacle with Greece and the images of the Greek nation being bullied by the more wealthy states in Europe It can seem that the EU is becoming a community where the wealthy countries tell the less wealthy how to live. But this is only one side. On the other hand without the EU and the collective bargaining power it provides, there would be little to protect individuals from the harvesting of their personal information for commercial gain by companies. The EU is to the fore in Data Protection and it is their intention to continue in that vein. Loan requests considered on the basis of proof of income, financial status and demonstrated repayment capacity (including capacity to repay at higher interest rates). Loans not available to people under 18. Mortgage loans by their nature require to be secured by a mortgage and charge on the subject property. A typical €100,000 20 year Variable interest rate mortgage for an Owner Occupier Residential Property with LTV greater than 80% will have monthly repayments of €618.44 APR 4.33%. If the APR does not vary during the term of the mortgage, the total cost of credit i.e. total amount repayable less the amount of the mortgage, would be €48, 425.60. The effect of a 1% increase in interest rates for such a mortgage will add €54.13 to monthly repayments. Surcharge Interest Arrears attract surcharge interest at 6% per annum in addition to the interest rate that applies to the loan. Execution and registration of the mortgage deed will involve payment by you of your solicitor’s fees, outlays and registration fees. Greta’s Herbs

at Bloom - Although I am told it’s been around for years it’s new to me – evidently developed using a species from Russia in the 1870’s. Plants have wonderful stories to tell!

Greta McCarthy-O’Brien

We are nearing the final days of summer and what a disappointment it has been. I will be very surprised if my large bed of sunflowers ever develop any flower headswhat sun will they worship? My sweet peas that usually enjoy a good shower of rain are equally disillusioned: all flowers need sunshine! It is wise practice to liquid feed sweet peas generously on a weekly basis and keep cutting them - at least I can enjoy their fragrance in my home as my summer dalliance days outside are sadly non-existent. Pots of both sweet and Greek bush basil are performing surprisingly well in the polytunnel. Careful watering is crucial in these humid conditions; avoid wetting the foliage as rot will quickly set in. When harvesting always pluck the tops as this encourages bushiness. Foliage plants such as willow, holly and our beloved fuchsia are thriving in this rain soaked land however blossoms are getting destroyed on many flowering perennials and bedding. The new purple pod mangetout pea ‘Shiraz’ is a great success and adds Solar Systems superb colour to salads. Swiss chard and Russian kale are both abundant so Tom Kennedy I must count as blessings some of the Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide offerings nature produces despite the hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, weather! The only pest infestation I be it oil, gas or electricity. aphids onhot my young A solarencountered system will save upwere to 70% of your annual water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more effennel plants and scented geraniums. I ficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when purchased we have had suchan a great spell of sunshine. organic spray to combat There these. is anotherI"solar known inas theI trade as "Thermodynamam system" very lucky rarely have ic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, any pest problems. Herbs are resilient you ask how! and many contain oils that omit Well the answer is simple really, it'svolatile not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a aromas. panel is fittedThis to your roof which is connected powerful often creates a to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar dual effect deterring certain pestsgassuch to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant into the panel as where it heats due to theattracting fact that the gas has a very low boiling aphids while other benefipoint of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, insects suchtoas hoverflies. wherecial the gas is compressed make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating it does so at At the end of summer I likehottowater reflect a cost.

on the growing season that has passed.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs Nostalgia setsto in as per I observe the canvas on average about €1,500 €2,000 year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to of 1/3 nature of this is hot water, soto a typical hot water bill for a family fading sombre colours. But of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

I am taking several trips abroad this winter so who knows what I will discover! I hope to visit the renowned garden ‘La Mortella’ on the Isle of Ischia in the bay of Naples. This garden was created by the English composer, William Walton and his Argentinean wife who believed there was a connection between music and gardening. He loved the isolation and composed there for 35 years. A return visit to the Botanic Gardens in Malaga is also on my itinerary. I enjoyed a guided tour there almost ten years ago when they were doing major rejuvenation and landscape work. It has one of the best palm collections in the world. Sometimes I dream of another place another time when I was one of those eccentric plant hunters of the last century! But for me today if I come back with a handful of collected seed

The First World War was the first highly industrialized total war in history, a conflict that, by 1918, involved 40 nations and 60 million soldiers of whom 10 million died and many more suffered serious injuries. The current centenary of the conflict provides an opportunity to reflect on the conflict and how contemporaries - notably poets and artists (including many from Ireland) - perceived the horrors of the war. The consequences of the Great War haunted the last century and still haunt us today. The lecture will offer reflections on how the conflict was represented during and after the war. Robert Gerwarth is Professor of Modern History at UCD and Director of the Centre for War Studies. After studying history and political science in Berlin, he completed his doctorate at Oxford University. Prof. Gerwarth has also held research fellowships or visiting professorships at Harvard University, the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and Sciences Po Paris. In 2013-14 he was a Humboldt Senior Research Fellow at the Herder Institute and a Braudel Fellow at the European University Institute. For his work on political violence in the twentieth century, he has received major research grants from the European Research Council (ERC), the Guggenheim Foundation, and the Irish Research Council (IRC). He is an elected Member of the Royal Irish Academy and the Young Academy of Europe, and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

This article first appeared in the Dingle Echo - the community news magazine published by Ógra an Daingin in 1985. DINGLE FOLK MEDICINE CURES Warts: A well known cure for warts in Dingle is to dip chalk into vinegar and rub this on the warts. This should be repeated for nine days and the warts should be gone by the end of that time. Another cure for warts is to spit on a stone and rub the stone on the warts. This should be repeated for a few days using different stones each day. Place the stones in a brown paper bag and offer them as sweets to someone. If the unfortunate person accepts the offer you will be rid of the warts which will be passed on to the person who thought the stones were sweets. A third cure for warts is to cut a potato in half and rub one half on the wart. Throw away the other half. Keep the half that was used on the wart and wait for it to rot and when it rots your warts will have disappeared. Bury this rotted half of the potato so you will never get warts again. If you still have warts after trying all these remedies go and see a doctor! Boils: A cure for boils is to make a white yeast bread poultice. This involves making a pack with the white yeast bread, soaking it in boiling water, draining draining through muslin and adding soda. This should then be placed on the infected area. Styes: A new version of an old cure for styes is to place a cold used teabag on the affected eye and leave for about half an hour. This is guaranteed to get rid of the stye! Bronchitis: Finally, to relieve bronchitis, chop onions and parboil them. Put them in an old piece of flannel and place this on chest.

Breandán Fitzgerald Kerry win Munster Senior Final in Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney Well done to Éamonn Fitzmaurice and his Kerry Seniors who were victorious in the replay against Cork on Saturday 18th July in Fitzgerald Stadium, Kerry 1-11 to Cork 1-6. Especially to Marc Ó Sé, Paul Geaney, Mikey Geaney and Alan Fitzgerald. We wish them all the best in the All Ireland Quarter Final that is to be played on Sunday August 2nd in Croke Park. Beir bua agus beannacht! The Quarter Final pairings will probably see Kerry playing the winners of the Westmeath v Fermanagh qualifier but a Kildare victory over Cork will cause an upset. The Quarter final draw is subject to provincial final winners avoiding defeated finalists from their own province in the first instance and to the avoidance of repeat pairings where possible. Both quarter finals featuring Kerry and Dublin will be played in Croke Park on Sunday August 2nd with the Kerry game likely to be the opening fixture on the double bill. The winners of Kerry’s quarter final tie will play the winners of the Monaghan /Tyrone/Sligo tie in the All Ireland Semi-finals on Sunday August 23rd Kerry’s Minor Football Championship opponents still unknown Jack O’Connor and his Kerry Minors still do not know who they will play in the Quarter Finals of the Electric Ireland Minor Football Championship following the drawn Connaught final last Sunday. Galway, who had a staggering seventeen points to spare in the Semi-final against a fancied Mayo side, got a late reprieve against Sligo in a low scoring

Kerry will play the losers of that encounter on a date to be decided. Kerry have requested that this game be played on Sunday August 2nd as a curtain raiser to their senior game but as Croke Park have pointed out, Kildare could be in exactly the same position on that day so we must wait and see. The Marina Inn Dingle

In Conversation with Philip King Melanie Mullan

• Great food, locally sourced with seafood a speciality served ‘til 10pm • Large selection of Irish Craft Beers & Ciders • Nightly music at 9.30 and the legendary Sunday Session at 5.30. Musicians welcome to join in. (066) 915 1660 marinainndingle@gmail.com www.themarinainndingle.com

Philip King is known for the input he has had in Irish music over the years. He is responsible for “Other Voices”, the well known music show filmed in a little church in Dingle. Apart from that he presents his own radio show “South Wind Blows” weekly on RTE1, as well as gigging with his band Scullion when he can. Put all this aside, I have one question that I want answered when we meet on a rainy day in Dingle; who is he rooting for in the Munster Final? Important information to be covered for two Corkonians now living in Kerry. He takes a moment to process the question “Well I was born and bred in Cork, my mother was a Kerry woman, so I’ve always had that conflict in my life from day one.” The brief pause feels like a lifetime for this Cork supporter. “I’d be supporting Cork really. It goes deep. I went to school in Cork City, I grew up with people like Jimmy Barry Murphy. It’s an intense rivalry between the two, but it’s a neighbourly rivalry.” Despite his commitment to the Rebel County, Dingle has been a big love of Kings’ for many years. “I first came here in 1966 or 1967. I came to stay back West, in the house of a woman called Nell Fitz, and I fell in love with the place. I fell in love with the physical beauty, the language, the cadence of the language and the musicality of the language. The place itself had a sense of a rich tradition. I didn’t know what that was back then, but I felt it.” Since that time, King has set out to share with the rest of the world those feelings and “Other Voices” is a fine example of one way he has. Starting out in 2002, the show recorded from St James church in Dingle - has had a successful run of 13 series with artists from Hozier to The National. “In the darkness of winter, to be able to fill this place up with music and joy and chat and discussion is a constant privilege for us to do.” When I meet King, he is preparing to head to Latitude Festival, in Suffolk, where Other Voices will have it’s own tent. “We’re going to build a little church over there, and invite some of our friends from here to take a sense of West Kerry and Ireland and Dingle over there, and other friends to come sit down and play.” And it’s a pretty impressive list of friends with Book Brass Band, Le Galaxie and surprise guest Ed Sheeran all performing over the past weekend. Part of the weekend will be played on this Saturdays “South Wind Blows”, another show that expresses Kings love for music. On the show prior to our meeting, King played Amy Winehouse “Love is a Losing Game”. With all of the media attention on the new documentary, he prefers to remember a different Amy. “In a way it (the song) was a response to the new movie that documents her disintegration into addiction and death and we prefer to remember her with her funny beehive hair do and her big smiling face and just her real passionate interest in music.” He is of course, referring to that time back in 2006, when Winehouse, just 22 years old, visited Dingle to perform on Other Voices. “Just over there, down the hallway (we are sitting in Benners Hotel), we sat with Amy Winehouse when she was in the full of her health. Vivacious and warm and compellingly interesting about music. She was a savant music lady.” It’s clear that time holds very fond memories for King. Although a hugely popular and successful show, King is still not certain if Other Voices will have it’s 14th Series. “It’s very challenging just now. We’re in a lot of conversations. The opportunity should be grasped because the artists that come here have multi-million followers on social media. When they leave here all they do is this” - he starts tapping on his phone - “ ‘I was just in the most beautiful place in the world, it’s called Dingle, I’m definitely going back.’ We don’t ask them to say those things, and you can’t buy that endorsement. The minute you turn into a commercial proposition it’s over, and that’s the dilemma for us.” But it doesn’t seem to be a big concern for King, as he gets up to leave he passes an acquaintance who asks after him. King turns around with his warm smile; “If I was any better, I’d be worried about myself!”

‘Ogham in 3D’ (www.celt.dias.ie) is a project being undertaken by the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, in conjunction with the Discovery Programme (www.discoveryprogramme.ie) with the aim of creating 3D models of all the Ogham stones in the country. You can find out more about the project, and see some of the work already carried out, by visiting the web site and by liking their Facebook page, ‘Ogham in 3D Project’.

Image of ogham stone at Cill Maoilchéadair created for Ogham in 3D by Discovery Programme surveyors.

The benefits of the 3D models mean that the stones can be looked at under optimum light and shadow conditions on the computer screen, something that cannot be done in the field, where one is dependent on the sun, shade and weather conditions. With this kind of technology, one would hope to be able to read inscriptions more clearly, to pick up carvings that have perhaps now become very difficult to see with the naked eye, and perhaps also to recognise different ‘hands’ in the carving of inscriptions and other designs. Several of the Ogham stones on the Dingle Peninsula have already been scanned, more particularly those on sites which are in State Care, although there are many more which remain to be surveyed. The project leaders hope to open this further work to interested members of the local community, particularly those with photography skills, and therefore enable many more of the stones to be digitised using photogrammetry (technique using photography rather than laser scanning), but also, perhaps, to help facilitate surveying of other carved stones such as cross-slabs and rock art. By carrying out this work, we will have a permanent record of the stones even if they are further damaged, in time, by the weather. This community participation is still at the discussion stage, but it is hoped to run a training session in the autumn. Should you think you would like to participate, please email your contact details to me at info@westkerrymuseum.com and your name will be put on our contact list. If you want to find out more about Ogham stones, a visit to Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh (13km/8 miles west of Dingle, www.westkerrymuseum.com) is a must! The museum is open every day from 10.00 am – 5.00 pm. Tel: 066-9156333 or info@westkerrymuseum. com. There is also a café with fresh baking daily and a bookshop, and free Wi-Fi for customers. Mackerel and Gooseberry Compote The zest and juice of 1 lemon

Mark Murphy: Dingle Cookery School

Enjoy!!!

Dash of sherry vinegar

This is a simple tasty dish using seasonal ingredients. We might consider it odd to pair gooseberry with mackerel but the sourness really cuts through the richness and the oil in the mackerel. This compote really adds a beautiful contrast to the mackerel. The compote itself once made can be kept in a jar for a week or so in the fridge and is ideal to serve as you would with a relish or a chutney with cheeses, cold meats or any where you feel you need to add a sharpness to a dish. The gooseberries themselves make a delicious jam and can be paired well with rhubarb, meadowsweet it also makes a tasty gooseberry curd. Serves 4 Ingredients 2-3 Mackerel fillets per person Rapeseed Oil Salt and Pepper 300g gooseberries, cleaned and topped and tailed 1 Red Onion finely diced

1 small heap flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped 50ml of dry white wine Sea salt and pepper For the compote Put a pot over a medium heat and a dash of oil, add the red onion and cook this slowly for about 5 minutes. Add the berries, wine, lemon juice and zest. Cook slowly of about 10 minutes. Add the sugar and vinegar; cook for five minutes more, then stir in the herbs. To cook the mackerel: Heat a pan to medium heat. Season the fish well, once the pan is ready add some oil to the pan and immediately add the fish skin side down. Allow this to cook for about 2-3 minutes. Turn down the heat and turn the fish. Allow this to cook for another one minute or so. Add a squeeze of lemon to the pan. Serve with a crisp garden salad or a light potato salad dressed with a salad dressing rather than a mayonnaise dressing. Add a generous spoonful of the compote beside the mackerel.

A Month in Tajikistan Joanne Ní Shuilleabhain I have just returned from a month in Khujand, Tajikistan. “But where the hell is it?”, most people tend to ask, (bearing in mind that a country with a name ending in “stan” is possibly not a popular travel choice). Meaning “Land of Tajiks” and located in Central Asia on the ancient Silk Route, bordering Afghanistan, China, Uzbekistan and Kyrgzstan, Tajikistan is one of the lesser known “stans” which were once part of the Soviet Union. In September 1991, following the upheaval and tearing asunder of the USSR, Tajikistan's coming out as an independent republic was followed by a Civil War in the nineties. Since the 7th century BC Arab conquest of Central Asia, Tajikistan has been a Muslim country and today it's an interesting mix of Islamic and Russified society. The country is predominantly Muslim. And I learned that more and more young people are being drawn to religion and are quite devout, while in many instances their parents (who grew up during Soviet times when religion was prohibited), are apathetic. There is also more of a trend towards dressing in a more traditional manner. Many women wear a “kurta”, a traditional flowing dress worn over loose trousers. On the other hand, the government is taking strong and rather unusual actions to stem the extremist flow so associated with that part of the world. Overt religious diplays are not encouraged, beards are forbidden and women are not allowed to wear a full hijjab. In addition, Facebook and other social media vehicles are very frequently (though not very successfully) blocked.

be older than 21 and men 24, before they marry. While there, I worked (teaching English) and studied (Russian) at the biggest language school in Khujand, which is owned by an amazingly resourceful and ambitious lady. This alone is unusual – alas, it's not a woman's world in Tajikistan. Also unusual is that she has three children (usually it's two) and is pregnant with a fourth. One day she informed me that her mother-in-law, who lived with the family was having guests and she would be taking the following day off to cook and prepare for this get-together and serve her mother-in-law's guests. Tajik people are unbelievably friendly and welcoming, with a great sense of humour. A walk to the market, an early morning wander in the park – there is plenty of opportunity to chat and laugh with the locals. “Where are you from?” “What do you think of our country?” “Have you eaten plov?” Not many knew much about Ireland, but then again, not many people are terribly knowlegeable about Tajikistan. Khujand is an important city in Tajikistan for many reasons, historical as well as cultural. It also, bizarrely, has the largest existing statue of Lenin. A relic of times past, Lenin presides over an overgrown playground littered with broken children's toys. He was moved from his more auspicius position in one of the main squares to make way for somebody else I'm still reflecting on my fascinating trip – life is oh so slowly changing in Tajikistan and so much of it mirrors how our own society used to be and the changes we have undergone. Tajiks are afraid of what the future holds and wary of economic uncertainty coupled with the (not yet openly expressed) threat of terrorism and extremeism. A U.S Green Card is a dream. In consular terms it's difficult for them to leave their country but not for lack of trying. The older people are bewildered and those who grew up in Soviet times are worried. I spoke to some people who were children then and they are quite nostalgic about that time. “We were happy then, we felt safe”. Yet they too are cautiously moving forward. The young of the post-Soviet period are blatantly impatient for change and development in all areas of life. All age groups have one thing in common, they are fiercely proud of their country, they want a better way of life AND they want everybody to know where the hell Tajikistan is!

Panshanbe Market in Khujand The city of Khujand is located in what feels like a corridor with mountain ranges on either side. The snow covered mountains are just about visible in the distance, while sweltering in the almost 40 degree heat of the city . Dawn was breaking the morning I flew in to Khujand. People were up and about getting the little stalls and kiosks ready. Most household and food shopping happens on the streets and in the market place. Fresh produce, such as cucumber, tomatoes, apricots, plums and tasty little crab apples were everywhere. Around the middle of June watermelons hit the markets. “Without chemicals”, I was assured. They can't afford chemicals. Economically speaking, Tajikistan is a poor county. One of their main sources of income is cotton. “White gold” they call it. Unlike many neighbouring countries, there is no gold from oil because there isn't any oil. Many Tajiks are seasonal workers in the markets and the building sites of Russia. The country is essentially propped by Russia through these paychecks which make their way south. “Plov” is the national dish (even though I gleaned that that there was a bit of a cultural debate about the exact provenance of the dish – the Uzbeks also claim it as theirs). Either way - rice, carrots, beef or lamb cooked in oil. In a traditional setting, a huge plate of “plov” is brought to the table and according to etiquette, the eldest member of the family invites everyone to sit and eat and all present eat from this plate. Family traditions are fascinating and predictably juxtapose with modern life. Tajiks are shocked at the seeming callousness of the “west” in relation to parents and elderly relatives. In a Tajik family, a son must be bourne, better still two. It is tradition for the youngest son to remain living with his parents, who will be taken care of by he and his wife. Marriage (mainly negotiated) happens at a very young age. In the coming September, a law is being introduced which means that women have to 50 West Kerry Live

Tá an saol inniu go laethúil ag cur as fé nialanna Maigdiléana, ach sa chás seo tá an scéal mar a bhí ina steille bheathaigh ar an stáitse. Bí ag faire amach agus gheobhair ard shásamh as an ndráma ‘Faoi Scáth’.

‘poblachtánach’uatha. Níl mórán ag iarraidh an bhearna a bhaint do Hillary Clinton sna Daonlathaig go fóill. An mbeidh an lá léi Hillary Clinton? An mbeidh a gcéad Uachtarán baineann ag na Meiriceánaigh? Ní mór do dhuine na milliún dollaéir a bheith aige/aici le ‘ainmniúchán’ a aimsiú agus na leaga liatha leis an Uachtarántacht a ghnóthú. Ní daonlathas é sin - agus glac leis go mbeidh lucht an rachmais a chuireann airgead mór ar fáil, ag súil go mbeidh cluas an bhuaiteora acu aon uair is maith leo. Feirmeóireacht Tá an t-éileamh nó an t-airgead a bhí ar uain titithe agus luach na mbeithíoch ag déanamh go maith. Is i stáid an Ghearaltaigh, i gCill Áirne tráthnóna Dé Sathairn seo caite a bhí an chlibirt.. Bhí beagnách 33,000 duine ag féachaint ar an gcluiche agus clagarnach bháistí ag spalladh anuas sa mhullach ar gach éinne ach iad siúd a bhí san árdán. Bhí ticéidí don árdáin sciopaithe go luath sa tseachhtain - ach ba chuma le lucht leanta Chiarraí bhí ard chluiche acu agus bua dá réir. Fear a bheidh ar an bhfoirean feasta na Colm Geaneytá sé láidir agus de ghnath an- chruinn. Ard imreoir. Bhí scata ag caint fén ndraoi Colm Cooper agus ní ionadh san. Bhí lár páirce ar fheabhas ag Ciarraí. Bhí an lán-chúlaí Aodán O’Mahony agus Paul Murphy leath chúlaí ar chlé lán do fhaobhar agus do éifeacht. B’sheo beirt ná raibh san ath-imirt. Bhain na Ciarraígh an- shásamh as an mbeartas Paul Galvin a thabhairt ar an bpáirc. ‘Sé a bhí é go seabhrach agus go cealgánta fena fhéasóig brea dhubh. Tá Ciarraí leath shlí. Is dócha gur beag agaibh a mheas go mbainfeadh Muineachán an bhearna do Thír Chonaill, ach dheineadar le pointe amháin. Cluiche maith.Thit an lug ar an lag ar Thiobrad Árainn in aghaidh Thír Eoin agus bhí sé soiléir go bhfuil an Ghaillimh ag neartú go tapaidh mar thugadar sníostáil do Dhoire. Ní fuair Sligeach aon aga a n-anál a tharrach in aghaidh Mhaigh Eó. I ndeire na dála bhí 2- 11 ag Sligeach scór maith, ach bhí 6-25 ag feara chrua Mhaigh Eo. Tá an- fhoireann acu. An leanfaidh an tsean mhallacht a cuireadh ar Mhaigh Eo arís i mbliana? Is beag a chreideann an sort sin cainte ach tá an lámh in uachtar ag an mallacht go fóill ar imreoirí sinsir caide an chontae. Ba dheas é dá mbuafadh siad Sam. Taisteal Bhíos i Meiriceá an tseachtain seo caite. Déarfaidh daoine ná bíonn aon stad orm ach ag síor thaisteal, ach is cúram pearsanta mo chuid bóithreoireachta an babhta seo. Thugas fé ndeara agus chloisfeá go minic é, go bhfuil Bostún mar shampla, i bfad níos daoire ná Springfield Mass. Is baolach go bhfuil sé fíor, ach má ta Bostún daor, tá an pá i bhfad níos aoirde ann. Mar sin is dócha go gcealaíonn siad a chéile, mar tá an pá i bhfad níos aoirde ann. Níl aon ghaol ag an saol seo againne le cuid don gcostas a bhaineann le Oideachas a chur ar chlann i Meiriceá. Bhíos ag cur fúm i Hampden. Ní ró-fhada uaim a bhí Coláiste dara leibhéal. Is deacair áit a fháilt ann cé gur 35,000 dollaeir sa bhliain an costas do scoláirí lae – scoláirí lae ar fad a fhreastalaíonn ar an gColáiste seo. Tá costas leighis fiáin ar fad. Tá daoine ann agus beagán don speilp ortha ach nílid ábalta díol as leigheas agus dea-scoláireacht dá gclann. Gan amhras má tá sé ar do theastas go rabhais i gcoláistí, ollscoileanna áirithe aitheanta, ní bheidh aon mhór dheacracht agat post a fháil. Is dócha go mbímíd coitianta ag clamhsán anso agus an ceart againn uaireanta, ach dá mbeithfeá i Meiriceá agus mar shampla, ná raibh an tsláinte fónamh agat bheadh thiar ort. Tá scata iomathóirí Poblachtánach[ ní mar na Poblachtánaigh atá againne ] a bheidh á fhéachaint le chéile le ainmniú a ghnóthú do thoghachán na hUachtarántachta a bheidh againn ann an bhliain seo chugainn.
