Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone Tuesday Nights 8.45pm

The feature at the next Dingle Film Club at the Phoenix Cinema on Tuesday 4th April will be “Hidden Figures”. This heartwarming film is the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson -brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big. The following week on Tuesday 11th April the feature will be “Loving”. Starring Oscar nominated Ruth Negga, the film tells the story of Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple, whose challenge of their anti-miscegenation arrest for their marriage in Virginia led to a legal battle that would end at the US Supreme Court. The film takes an understated approach to telling a painful -- and still relevant -real-life tale, with sensitive performances breathing additional life into a superlative historical drama. 4 West Kerry Live

Farming News

Louis Murchan

Cut in clawback on sale of entitlements to 20% The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed T.D., has announced a cut in the amount of clawback applied to the sale of Basic Payment Scheme entitlements without land. In 2016 the sale of entitlements without land was subject to a clawback of 50% of the number of entitlements sold. Based on the experience of the level of sales of entitlements without land in 2016, it is believed that a reduction in the level of claw-back to 20% is appropriate for 2017 and will assist farmers in future business planning. Following recent consultation between the Department and the Direct Payments Advisory Committee, comprising members of the main farming bodies and agricultural advisory and education providers, the Minister has decided that the level of clawback on the sale of entitlements without land in 2017 should be cut to 20%. The proceeds arising from the implementation of clawback are used to replenish the National Reserve fund. Hen Harrier Scheme - New Project Team in place. A Project Team to run the new Hen Harrier Scheme has now been selected. The selection was made on foot of a competitive tender operated by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine which closed at the end of January. Following careful assessment of the proposals received, the selection committee identified ‘The Hen Harrier Project’ as the approach which best reflected the aims and objectives of the new scheme. The Project is a joint approach led by the Golden Eagle Trust, bringing together a team of experienced conservationists, agricultural advisors and environmental scientists, with a strong local focus in delivery of the new measures on the ground. The new scheme was targeted specifically at farmers with designated land and added that this would provide farmers in those areas with an important additional income stream on top of GLAS and GLAS Plus. No decision has as yet been made with regard to appointment of a Project Team for the Freshwater Pearl Mussel Scheme. The proposals received continue to be assessed and a decision on next steps will be made shortly. A total budget of €35m is available for both the Hen Harrier and Freshwater Pearl Mussel Schemes over the lifetime of the current Rural Development Programme. Dairy farmers to receive €6.5 million under Voluntary Supply Management Scheme Payments will now start to issue to Irish dairy farmers in respect of Phase I of the EU voluntary supply management scheme for dairy. This scheme, developed by the Department in co-operation with the Strategic Banking Corporation of Ireland (SBCI), has made €150 million in loans available to farmers in all sectors, at interest rates of 2.95%. This scheme provides farmers with a low cost, flexible source of working capital, which will allow them to pay The scheme offered aid payable at a rate of 14c/kg to farmers who reduced their output in the reduction period of Oct-December 2016 compared to the same period in the previous year. • The Department received 4,500 applications in the initial stage of the scheme but 1,000 applicants opted not to proceed with their planned output reductions. • Payments of around €6.5Million are being made to approximately 3,500 farmers. • There was total budget of €150 million allocated for the EU as a whole for the scheme. • This would have equated to a reduction in production of 1.1 million tonnes if fully utilised. Across the EU the actual reduction was just over 850,000 tonnes which is 20% less than that initially proposed. • Phase II of the scheme required applicants to reduce production in the period November 2016 to January 2017. Phase II was heavily oversubscribed at EU level and a large coefficient was applied while means that applicants for this phase will receive aid on approximately 12.5% of their reduction. • The closing date for applications for payment under phase II was March 3rd and payments for qualifying applicants will issue by the end of April. Public consultation on new National Strategy for Producer Organisations in the Fruit & Vegetable Sector At a recent meeting of the Horticulture Industry Forum junior Minister of Agriculture, Minister Doyle launched a public consultation to assist the development of a new National Strategy & Environmental Framework for Producer Organisations in the fruit and vegetable sector. Producer Organisations have a key role to play in strengthening the bargaining

10 West Kerry Live

position of growers with the retail sector and the National Strategy and Environmental Framework will set out the priorities through which improving the competitiveness of the fruit and vegetable sector and increasing sustainability of production can be achieved. Stakeholders are being encouraged to respond to the public consultation by the closing date of the 26th April and look forward to future engagement towards the development of this important Strategy for Producers Organisations operating in Fruit and Vegetable sector. Two new regulations concerning the potato pest Epitrix were recently signed into law by the Minister. Epitrix (potato flea beetle) is a flea beetle which attacks potato plants and tubers, Solanum tuberosum. The adults of the potato flea beetles feed on the leaves of the plants causing serious damage. This reduces the ability of the plant to photosynthesize which in turn affects the size & quality of the tubers and plant health. The adults lay their eggs in the soil and the larvae then burrow into the tuber and/or the roots and begin to feed. This feeding causes significant damage to the tuber which may become unviable for sale, and the destruction of the roots can result in plant death. Landowners Reminded Of Fire Danger The above mentioned Mr Doyle also has a responsibility for forestry, and wishes to alert farmers, forest owners, forest managers and the public of the need to be wary of the risk of wildfires over the coming months, and called for farmers, landowners and anyone enjoying the recreational opportunities of our countryside to behave responsibly and within the law with regard to lighting fires. It is in the public interest to not set fires to gorse, during the nesting season, or on certain other types of land particularly in upland areas and that high fire risk conditions can be expected over the coming spring and summer months, when weather conditions dictate. Recalling the major wildfires in recent years that destroyed or damaged property, including farmland and forests, he added that such fires directly endanger people’s homes and property and destroy valuable habitats and tourism resources. Furthermore, they place enormous strain on the emergency services and put the lives of rural dwellers and emergency service personnel at considerable risk. Following dry weather patterns, a wildfire risk can quickly develop in all areas where flammable vegetation such as grasses, gorse and heather are present, the message is essentially the same each year – landowners, rural dwellers and other land users are asked to maintain a high degree of vigilance regarding fire over the coming months. Suspicious activity should be reported to the Gardaí and uncontrolled or unattended fires should be reported immediately to the Fire and Emergency Services. He also reminded land owners that under the Wildlife Acts, it is illegal to burn growing vegetation on uncultivated land between 1st March and 31st August and that persons engaged in such illegal activity are liable to prosecution and could face fines, imprisonment and penalties to their farm payments. Many may believe that it is a daft law. But it is the law. The problem arises when someone lights a fire outside the permitted burning season. They know that what they are doing is wrong, so they don’t hang around to supervise the fire. And this is where the danger arises. Unsupervised fires easily and always go out of control. And an unsupervised and uncontrolled fire becomes uncontrollable and a danger. All Poultry & Bird Keepers to Register or Update their Registration Due to the continued findings of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in wild birds in Ireland and the ongoing situation with the disease in poultry and wild birds in Europe, the Department is reminding any poultry keeper, or owner of other birds* who is not already registered with the Department to apply for registration immediately. In addition all those who are already registered are asked to update their registration details. Anyone who keeps poultry, who deals or trades in poultry, including those persons who keep small numbers of poultry for their own use, are legally bound to register their premises with the Department under the Control on Places where Poultry are kept Regulations 2014 (S.I. 114 of 2014). Persons that own other birds such as racing pigeons, aviary birds or other captive birds are also encouraged to register with the Department. In order to ensure that the Department’s poultry register is accurate and up to date a temporary, dedicated Poultry Registration and Update Unit has been established. The unit may be contacted on lo-call 0761 064449 or by e mailingPoultryRegUpdate@agriculture.gov.ie. Contact them, if you have any doubts. - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938

Let’s Stalk about Rhubarb! Irene Ní Fhlannúra

It is not surprising then, that Rhubarb which nourishes the liver also provides nutrients beneficial to the eyes. Most notably are lutein and zeaxanthin, two polyphenols working together to prevent macular degeneration and to protect the eyes from free radical damage caused by pollution, smoking and radiation. Newer research looking at compounds in rhubarb have seen anti-cancer properties in another compound, anthraquinones – which inhibits the uptake of glucose by cancer cells, thus starving them and causing cell death. These new studies may lead to more selective and effective treatments for cancer in the future. The most prominent vitamin in rhubarb is vitamin K. Most noted for its role in blood clotting, vitamin K has also an important role in brain and neuron health. It stimulates cognitive function and prevents oxidation of brain cells, reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia. Vitamin K stimulates bone growth and repair, working with calcium and manganese also found in rhubarb, offers extra support for the skeleton too.

In a politically correct botanical world, if a vegetable acts like a fruit, would you call it a trans-plant? If so, you can put rhubarb at the top of the list of trans-plants. Most notably found in pies and jams, rhubarb has been around for a long time and not always been served for dessert. It gets its fruitiness from us Westerners who doused its tartness in sugar and cooked it like fruit, but really it is a vegetable and quite a useful one too. Rhubarb belongs to the Polygonacea family of plants which also gives us buckwheat and sorrel. Like many large families, there are a few troublesome members, and this family is no different with a plethora of weeds including the controversial Japanese Knotweed. For thousands of years the rhubarb root has been used in Chinese, Arabic and European folk medicine, mostly as a remedy for constipation. The leaves are highly poisonous as they contain a toxic amount of oxalic acid and can cause cramps, nausea and even death! Thankfully, some brave soul chanced eating the stems and survived, giving them the thumbs up and we have been enjoying rhubarb ever since! In Spring, Earth energy is rising up from the ground and roots and moves into stems and new leaves providing a refreshing awakening from the Winter. This energy is mirrored in animal and human nature too. It is invigorating and revitalizing. It motivates us to clean and clear the clutter, make home repairs and redecorate. Our natural inclination to prepare for the year ahead gives us the best chance of survival and sustainability and reflects the ascending energy that is all around us. No need to nag to get those jobs done, just open the windows and let the Spring energy do the rest! Each Season is linked to an organ system in the body and Spring brings some TLC to the liver and gallbladder. The sour flavour of emerging Spring foods such Rhubarb, dandelion leaves, rocket and sorrel, stimulate these organs into action, helping us to cleanse inside and clear out our inner clutter. Rhubarb in a low-calorie food (21kcals/100g) and has various compounds that helps to increase metabolism and encourage the body to burn off fat. Rhubarb contains the kind of fibre the bowel loves, ensuring movements are smooth and regular and the stool is bulked up and soft. Both the root and the stem are used to treat constipation which ultimately reduces risk of other digestive ailments such as bloating, cramps, diverticulosis and colorectal cancer. The juices from stewed rhubarb provide a gentler relief for the very young and elderly or those convalescing and frail. It is well known that the liver and eyes are associated organs, even Western medicine recognizes that our eyes can reflect the health of our liver. Rhubarb is usually sold trimmed of leaves and in a bundle. Some rhubarb is grown in darkness over Winter and produces a redder, sweeter stalk. Red stalks are more attractive to consumers and may have additional antioxidants that produce the red colour, called anthocyanins. However, green stalks are more robust and contain all the health benefits mentioned above. In Asia and the Middle East, rhubarb is added to meat stews such as lamb and beef. The acidity of rhubarb makes it an ideal companion to fatty meat dishes, improving digestibility and help break down the fats. In Northern Europe, rhubarb can often accompany oily fish such as mackerel and herrings, for the same reasons. Not only do they go well together, the rhubarb will reduce the fishy aftertaste some people get from oily fish. It is also added to soups with lentils, vegetables and dill. You could also roast rhubarb with carrots, parsnips and red onions as a side dish. This Spring, don’t limit rhubarb’s culinary possibilities or negate its goodness by drowning it in sugar! Put your Spring energy to good use by moving the rhubarb out of the fruit bowl and into the veg box, where it belongs! Excerpts From A Dingle Diary By Ted Creedon Saturday, March 14, 1987. A misty start to the day but cleared to good sunny spells. Wrote a brief letter to Archbishop Dermot McNamara- what do you say to a man on his death bed? Met artist Jay Killian in town and told him I was setting up a framing business. He said it was badly needed in Dingle. Dee Counihan, who recently opened a flower shop on Green Street, told me that a couple of people were thinking of starting the same business - ‘so get right to it!’ she said. Cut some firewood before dinner.

Sunday, March 15. Fresh and cool with winds from northwest. We went for a drive after lunch to Burnham House/Coláiste Íde and took some photos. Then drove along the seaward side of the college, past all the fields that were producing vegetables for Ballyferriter co-op a few years ago. Parked on the roadside below the signal tower and walked up the hill to enjoy the fine views of the harbour and the bay. Walked down to the approaches to Dún Eask then back down the hill to our car - just as itbegan to rain!

Snow and hail today -very cold. Spent most of the day preparing a business development plan for presentation to the Údarás. Went to woodwork class in the CBS tonight.

Thursday, March 19. Snow and hail continues. Spent over two hours with Ogie Moran at the Údarás offices in Dingle discussing the fine details of setting up a business, training, travel, accommodation, market research etc. No meeting of youth club magazine committee tonight.

Friday, March 20. Went to the Flower Press framing studio near the lake in Annascaul. They are closing the business. Spent two hours talking about framing and they agreed to give me some training in their workshop next Monday to gain experience. The re-upholstered Parker Knoll armchairs came back from Tralee - it took two weeks to do the job - and cost £200.

head, one horn hooked under my ribcage lifting me clear off the ground, throwing me across her neck and her back. I was sure I was going to be gored at any second. But then I was dumped on the ground behind her and barely managed to avoid a flying hoof. The three witnesses were frozen in disbelief and horrified. Lucky ran off and the cows and calf galloped up the road. I had a few cuts and bruises and the farmers took me to the doctor. I’m glad the kids weren’t with us - it might have been one of them.

Monday, March 23. Very sore and limping today. The postman brought good news of a tax rebate. The much anticipated National Lottery was launched today and buying was brisk all over the country with sales estimated at over £1m. It is basically a form of legalised gambling and may hit all sorts of charities which won’t have raffle prizes to compete with the state lottery. Spent all afternoon at the Flower Press in Annacsaul learning about the framing business and found it very rewarding.

Tuesday, March 24. Went to Fitzy’s mill to look for picture moulding, none there but it’s ordered. The upgrading of the mill is almost complete - the shed is enormous, like a plane hanger. Burnham based artist Nick Annino, an American, asked me to do some framing for him - soon as possible.

Saturday, March 21.

Up a 7am and headed for Cork city. Parked in a new multi-floor car-park near Roches stores. Times are changing fast - reminds me of Manchester. Spent some time shopping for tools, books and art materials. Had a wholesome lunch in a small upstairs café for £3.50. Spent some time with the manager of Marcus Ltd - a large framing company in Cork. Saw their equipment and got some materials supplier contacts.

Still showers of snow and hail - no spuds sat yet! Spent all day at a marketing seminar for small businesses in the Hillgrove Hotel. It was organised by the Údarás and delivered by a UCG-based marketing lecturer named Aiden Doyle. It was stimulating and provocative and almost all of the 20 people attending had to participate in the discussions. Alan Dukes is the new leader of Fine Gael and was elected by secret ballot in Dublin today. Peter Barry and John Bruton also contested the vacancy left by Garrett Fitzgerald.

Tuesday, March 17.

Sunday, March 22.

Took the kids to 9 o’clock Mass - a soft rainy morning but cleared later. Watched the big Dublin parade on TV. It got off to a poor start but improved a bit later. Not very impressive overall but the commentator kept talking about ‘this marvelous spectacle’ etc and all the people who were interviewed in the street were trying hard to sell Ireland to America which was receiving the show via satellite. Heard that 20 local people went off to America looking for work this week and 30 more going next week - where have all the young folk gone?

A day never to be forgotten! After lunch I set off on a walk to Lough and Dingle Horseriding Holiday across the strand to Beenbawn with my www.dinglehorseriding.com Options: info@dinglehorseriding.com better half and our dog, Lucky. Pastoral Ministry Training Course Kerry Diocese

Welcome to Gáirdín Mhuire

The diocese, for some years now, has offered this training programme to give parishioners the opportunity for personal Faith formation and as a preparation and encouragement to more fully participate in the life of their local Church. In the beginning the course was offered over twenty, two-hour sessions duplicated, in J.P.II centre Killarney and Ardfert, to facilitate access. Other locations have been used and this year (2017) will see the course offered in Dingle for the first time: sessions are to be held on Saturdays, once monthly, four before Christmas and four in New Year.

Call in for tea when in town to shop, The fire will be lighting when into us you pop. We won’t keep you long but you’ll leave with a smile, For we serve the best grub by a country mile. Stay for some lunch, if that’s what you wish, Just let us know in advance and we’ll load up your dish.

No special qualifications are necessary to take part and there are no restrictions of age, gender or history of parish involvement. Indeed one of the attractive features of the gatherings which I attended (2014/15) was the variety of interests and abilities amongst participants. Many already had a role, for example, as readers, eucharistic ministers, sacred music, liturgy or administration in their parish. Others wondered about formal involvement or even about their worthiness for such. On the first night Bishop Ray Browne spoke of his place amongst the People of God and added, "We are all in this (work of building the Church) together". The content and quality of input was superb covering major areas of Scripture, Sacraments, Liturgy and Prayer. Presentations on the Call of All Baptised, the Mission of Church & Parish, Morality & Social Justice were very challenging. All sessions offered opportunity for questions and discussion. A number of evenings involved Group Work aimed at creating insight into how we interact and communicate with others. Parishes do pay a substantial part of the course fee with the expectation that participants will become actively involved after training. There is however significant support by way of encouragement and resources available to anyone then prepared to commit to the working of parish life.

For more information, contact Mary Lyne at 087 2315178 GAA: Castlegregory had a 10 point win over Duagh in Rd 2 of the County League , played in Castlegregory on Sunday. With surface conditions beginning to firm in the sunshine, all expectations were for a free-flowing encounter. Duagh opened the scoring with two points in quick succession from Ger McCarthy (free) and Kieran Lucey. A goal by Jordan Quirke, following a defence-splitting run by Alan Fitzgerald, saw the home side inch ahead. Another goal from Colm O’ Mahoney quickly followed before Daniel O’ Donoghue and GerMccarthy for Duagh and Jimmy O’ Grady exchanged points. AntoKelliher found the net on the 11th minute to extend the Castlegregory lead. They struggled to maintain their opening dominance and were confined to two further points from AntoKelliher and Colm O’ Mahoney. Daniel O’ Donoghue, meanwhile, kept Duagh in touch with two points to end the half. Half time score Castlegregory 3-3; Duagh 0-6. Castlegregory continued their dominance with a point from Colm O’ Mahoney on the resumption. Alan Fitzgerald collected the subsequent kick out, transferred to Timmy Moriarty who pointed. As the matters proceeded, the game was interrupted by numerous late tackles and offthe ball incidents which limited it as a spectacle. The result, however, was a foregone conclusion as the match entered the final quarter but Castlegregory failed to capitalise on their dominance with a succession of wides. Aaron O’ Connor managed to breach the Castlegregory defence to goal for Duagh. Jeremiah Kelly followed with a point in what was Duagh’s final score. AntoKelliher (2) and Jordan Quirke increased the winning margin for the home side who ran out comfortable winners on a score of 3-9 to 1-8. In the end, Castlegregory will be happy with the win given a strong physical challenge from Duagh. Crème Brûlée &Chocolate Cookies Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School I believe that every cook should have a few desserts up their sleeve even if you don’t like making desserts. A crème brûlée is probably one of the easiest desserts and it is very impressive when served to the table after a meal. I have added a chocolate biscuit if you want to impress someone but even without the biscuit you will love this dessert. I always find that when I serve a crème brûlée most people love it, even the people that normally don’t reach for the dessert. Ingredients (Makes 8) For the Crème Brûlée 600ml cream 1 vanilla pod slit lengthways 10 egg yolks 60g caster sugar plus 100g for glaze For the Chocolate Cookies

Some of the winners of the Annascaul Badminton team in Killarney 25th March: Aine Newsome, Mai Griffin, Stephanie Reid, Sara Casey, Sean Spillane, Ruadhan Donovan & Jack Lyne.

250g flour 80g cocoa ½ tsp. baking powder 220g butter 150g caster sugar For the filling for the cookies 130g white chocolate 15g butter 150ml cream Method Preheat oven to 150º C Put the cream and the vanilla in a pot and bring it to a gentle simmer. Once it has heated, leave aside to cool and to infuse. Strain the mixture when cooled. Mix the egg yolks and the sugar together, add the cream mixture then pass it through a sieve. Place this mixture in ramekins and on to a tray and pour water around the ramekins until it comes up to ¾ of the way (called a Bain Marie). Cook for 30 minutes until the custard has set - a gentle shake should determine this - if the custard wobbles put it back in the oven for another 5 minutes. Allow to cool and place in the fridge for a few hours if possible. For the cookies Sift the flour, cocoa and baking powder together. In a separate bowl cream the butter and the sugar. Once this comes together add in the dry ingredients in stages. Bring this together to form a dough. Wrap this up in cling film and allow it to rest. Roll out the dough thinly. Using a cookie cutter cut out the shape you require. Place these on a baking tray and allow them to bake for about 15 minutes. Once they are baked allow them to cool on a wire rack. For the filling Melt the chocolate and the butter. In a pot heat the cream and pour it over the chocolate. Stir this mixture and allow to set for about 2 hours. Turn the cookies so that they flat side is facing upwards. Lay them on a tray. To finish the cookies, pipe a small amount of the mixture on half of the cookies. Take the rest and place them on top of the filling. To serve Sprinkle sugar over the custard and use a blow torch to caramelise the sugar, or place under a hot grill for a few seconds. Place this on a plate and two cookies beside it. Enjoy!!! West Kerry Live 19

Nurture Africa Eimear Murphy & Aoife Sheehy We will be travelling to Nansana, Uganda on the 30th of June for three weeks working as volunteer teachers with Nurture Africa. Nurture Africa is a charity which aims to nurture the mental, physical and emotional growth and wellbeing of Ugandan HIV/AIDS infected and affected orphans. They also aim to nurture vulnerable children and their HIV+ parents/guardians. Nurture Africa provides the community of Nansana access to quality healthcare (primary healthcare and specialist HIV treatment and care), education and sustainable livelihoods projects whilst mainstreaming child welfare and gender equality through all their activities. Volunteering was something we both always wanted to do and we felt it would be a life changing experience. We spoke to other girls who have volunteered and it was all positive responses we got back. We decided to go to Uganda as a part of our alternative educational experience placement. We came to know the organisation at an information evening in Mary Immaculate College where we are both studying. The charity is a child centred organisation and working with orphans was something we were very interested in doing. Already we have held a very successful coffee morning thanks to Muirin Gowan at Bácús Café on Green St in Dingle who facilitated the event. Our next event to raise funds is a Bingo night on April 2 in Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne at 7.30pm. We will also be holding a bake sale on Easter Sunday morning in Gairdín Mhuire from 10.00 am. We would like to thank everyone for their continued support so far and we look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events.

From The Past

Coast Guard Helicopter Rescues 10 Fishermen In Dingle Harbour. Following the tragic loss of the crew of the Coast Guard helicopter, rescue 116, Ted Creedon recalls the Coast Guard’s dramatic rescue of ten fishermen from the trawler Celestial Dawn at the mouth of Dingle harbour on Saturday, February 2, 2002. It was 7:20 on Saturday night when my brotherin-law called to say he had seen a red flare towards Dingle lighthouse. I rang the harbourmaster, Brian Farrell, but he was already heading for Beenbawn, a small beach near the lighthouse. I drove there with my daughter Siún and arrived just as another red flare burst over the headland near the lighthouse. The wind was strong and the waves thundered against the cliffs but there was nothing to be seen in the storm tossed seas around the harbour's mouth. Brian Farrell and his son Niall were in the carpark gearing up for the trek across the cliffs in the direction of the flares. Fisherman Tom Kennedy was there also and it transpired later that he had been watching from his house as the Celestial Dawn left port. When her lights suddenly disappeared he raised the alarm. Siún and I went home, got changed, borrowed a torch from a neighbour and set out across the cliffs to the lighthouse with Jimmy Bambury, Dingle fire brigade chief. The cliff path is hazardous in daylight but ten times more so in the dark. The first thing that struck us was the stench of diesel fumes on the wind. Jimmy, who had information that a Spanish trawler was in trouble, said; " I don't like that smell lads. She must be gone down". We arrived at the lighthouse and saw several people with torches pointed towards the sea below. We didn't know what to expect as we looked over the cliff and for several heart-stopping moments it was difficult to comprehend the terrifying sight that met our eyes. Fifty feet below the Celestial Dawn was lying half submerged on her starboard side with her crew clinging to the railings - all in a line along the side of the ship. Most had lifejackets but some didn't and those who didn't were taking the full force of the waves as they broke over the trawler's stern. The vessel was being battered against the rocks on either side of her. Sometimes the swell lifted her high in the air and she bucked like some metal monster then settled again for a few moments. When this happened the frightened men fought desperately to hold on to the railings. We wondered how long they could survive that. The Dingle Coast Guard rescue boat was on the scene and came as close to the trawler as the cox , Mark Greeley, dared to go. Local ferryman Jimmy Flannery had his boat Dingle Bay positioned so as to receive the fishermen if the Coast Guard dinghy could effect a rescue. The fishermen were shouting and gesticulating but the situation was too risky for the rescue boat. There was a real danger of her being caught in drifting nets or ropes or of being bashed against the trawler's hull.

26 West Kerry Live

There was also a language problem and verbal communication was almost impossible in those conditions anyway but the rescue crew pointed to the night sky and shouted ' Helicopter! Helicopter! ' to the fishermen to reassure them that help was on the way. Local fishermen, watching from the cliff, feared that the men below might try to jump in the water to reach the rescue boat. That could have been fatal. Harbourmaster Brian Farrell, who was the co-ordinator on the cliff, informed us that the rescue helicopter was en route. Valentia Lifeboat arrived just after 8pm and her very presence must have brought vital psychological relief and hope to the fishermen below as it did to those of us who were helpless observers on the cliff above. There was a whoosh as she fired a flare over the scene. When it burst an eerie pinkish light lit up the whole area from the lighthouse to the Towereen Bawn on the other side of the harbour's mouth. This allowed the lifeboat crew to appraise the whole situation. Then she switched on her powerful searchlights and trained them on the Celestial Dawn. The trawler's liferafts floated between the vessel and the rocks. There was no escape that way, there was no access to the cliff and she was now sinking deeper into the sea. The men continued to cling to the bucking vessel as the waves broke over them. One man was seen to throw up, he may have swallowed seawater and diesel. We were asked to count the crew and when it was certain that there were ten men on board we knew that none had been lost. The lifeboat and the local Coast Guard unit tried to get additional lifejackets to the stricken crew but encountered problems. Then the sound of the Shannon-based Coast Guard helicopter was heard above the wind. She came from the east, made a long sweeping circle over the town and approached the harbour's mouth from the west. She positioned herself immediately over the Celestial Dawn, her searchlights trained on the men below. The powerful downward thrust of her rotors whipped up a storm of spray adding another visually dramatic element to the incredible scene. After a few minutes Winchman Peter Leonard was lowered towards the trawler. We wondered if he'd make it or would he be battered against the vessel's hull in the wind and waves. We probably forgot for a moment that these rescue crews are highly trained and vastly

experienced. Any doubts we had were immediately dispelled because the winchman had no sooner landed safely on the hull than he had securely harnessed one fisherman and both were hoisted to the Sikorsky. We watched in admiration as he repeated the exercise and one after another the crewmen were lifted to safety while the helicopter remained rock steady in the buffeting winds over the trawler. The roar of her engines drowned out every other sound. I looked along the line of faces on either side of me. All were transfixed by the scene below. I noticed one young girl, perhaps a fisherman's daughter, with both her hands pressed palms together under her chin. The light from the rescue operation reflected on her face. She was praying silently. One crewman seemed reluctant to leave. He may have been more terrified than the others or perhaps he was too cold to move. The winchman appeared to force the man's hands from the railings before lifting him clear of the vessel. The ten men were rescued in less than fifteen minutes. Most of those watching had seen rescue exercises in the past but nothing like this. This was the real thing - a life and death drama being played out before our eyes. It may have been a routine excercise for the Coast Guard. To those of us watching from the cliffs it was a remarkable demonstration of training, skill, courage and experience. Many of those involved in the rescue were volunteers but all were focussed and determined to save those ten fishermen. As the helicopter rose and swung away with her precious cargo I felt like applauding, my faith in the rescue services fully affirmed. I told my daughter about the girl I had seen praying. " I was praying too,Dad", she replied. We headed home across the cliffs as the lights of the Valentia lifeboat disappeared into the blackness of Dingle Bay.

Bhíomair ag trácht le déanaí ar an ngnáthfhocal geansaí as ós scéal a tharraigíonn scéal deineadh tagairt don nath ‘chomh dall le geansaí’, a chloistear go mion minic sa chaint laethúil i gCorca Dhuibhne. Cad go díreach is brí leis nó cad as a dtagann sé? An féidir a bheith chomh dall le geansaí sa tslí chéanna is a bheadh duine chomh dall le bonn mo bhróige? Dar ndóigh dhá bhall feistis atá i gceist le geansaí agus bróg. Ach ní geansaí mar sin atá i gceist ar chor ar bith le ‘chomh dall le Geansaí’ mar is léir ón gceannlitir G ansan. Deintear tagairt anseo go Gheansaí – píobaire cáiliúil a saolaíodh i gCill Airne san ochtú haois déag. James Gandsey ab ainm dó. Sloinne as an ngnáth é, mar Sasanach ab ea a athair a raibh baint aige le Caisleáin an Rois i gCill Airne. De réir na hirise Journal of Kerry Folk Life Imleabhar 8, Uimhir 3 phós Gandsey bean áitiúil agus saolaíodh mac dóibh James sa bhliain 1767. Roinnt blianta ina dhiaidh sin d’ardaigh a thuismitheoirí a seolta go Gibraltar agus fágadh a mac fé choimirce a sheanmháthar, máthair na máthar dar ndóigh. Ar mhí-ámharaí an tsaoil bhuail taom bolgaí James óg a d’fhág dall é, geall leis. As san an nath ‘chomh dall le Gandsey’. Bhí Gandsey fostaithe mar Phíobaire an Tiarna Headley-Wynne a raibh cónaí air i gCaladh na Feirste, cóngarach do Bhaile an Mhuilinn, Co. Chiarraí. Thugtaí Lady Headley’s Piper air. Bhain sé clú agus cáil amach dó féin a feabhas a chuid píobaireachta. Tugann an leabhar taistil ‘Hall’s Ireland ardmholadh dó mar dhuine a raibh féith an cheoil go smior ann. Agus é fós ina fhear óg, dheineadh James uirlisí ceoil as giolcacha Locha Chill Airne. Ba é a mhúinteoir agus a dhlúthchara Tadhg Connor a bhronn air na píobaí uillinn a sheinneadh sé. Dar le Connor ní raibh aon phíobaire eile in Éirinn ag an am ab fhearr teideal chucu. Tá údar maith leis an leagan ‘Geansaí’ mar aistriú ar Gandsey. B’shin mar a thráchtann An Seabhac air ina dhírbheathaisnéis ‘Beir mo Dhúthracht’. Deir an Seabhac gur mhair cuimhne ar Ghandsey Píobaire ag muintir Chorca Dhuibhne go dtí ár linn féin. Is amhlaidh a mhair sé go dtí 1857. Bhí 90 bliain slánaithe aige fén am san agus rugadh an Seabhac sé bliana fichead ina dhiaidh sin. Adhlacadh Gandsey i Mainstir Mhuc Rois i gCill Airne. Níl aon tásc ar a uaigh féin anseo is baolach ach tá leacht cuimhneacháin ann ag coinneáil a chuimhne buan. Agus na haon uair a deirimid ‘chomh dall le Gandsey’ táimid ag cur cloch i leacht duine uasail a dhein cion fir do chultúr a thíre. - Buíochas: Máire Ní Iarlaithe

Gout - Differential Diagnosis

chemicals called purines. Some medicines, such as diuretics, can also bring on gout. It is a condition found more commonly in men.

Eddie O’Grady

I would always refer a patient immediately to a doctor if I suspect gout. One of the big things that alerts me to gout as a manual therapist, as opposed to other injuries, is how tender the skin of the affected area is to touch. Just stroking the skin gently can be extremely painful for the client. This is not the case with other musculoskeletal injuries. You have to probe a little deeper to illicit pain. Another factor which differentiates gout from other injuries, is that there is no mechanism of injury, i.e. the person cannot recall any incident that may have brought on the pain.

How is gout diagnosed?

What is gout? Gout is a kind of arthritis, which is caused by too much uric acid in the blood. The signs and symptoms of gout almost always occur suddenly, often at night, and without warning. They can include: • Intense joint pain. Gout usually affects the large joint of your big toe first, but it can occur in your feet, ankles, knees, hands and wrists. The pain is likely to be most severe within the first 4 to 12 hours of an attack. • Lingering discomfort. After the more severe pain subsides, some joint discomfort may last for anything from a few days to a few weeks. Later attacks are likely to last longer and affect more joints. It can be months or sometimes years between attacks. • Inflammation and redness. The affected joint or joints become swollen, tender, warm and the surrounding skin etc. becomes red and inflamed. • Limited range of motion. Decreased joint mobility may occur as gout progresses. These attacks can last a few days or many weeks before the pain subsides. If left untreated gout can harm your joints, tendons, and other tissues, over time. Your chances of getting gout are increased if you are overweight, drink too much alcohol, or eat too much meat and fish, foods that are high in

prescribe a medicine to reduce uric acid buildup in your blood. Paying attention to what you eat can also help you manage the condition. Eating moderate amounts of a healthy mix of foods to control bodyweight while getting the nutrients you need can be a good starting point if somebody is overweight. To make a diagnosis your doctor will ask questions about your symptoms and do a physical examination. Your doctor may also take a fluid sample from the affected joint, to look for uric acid crystals. This is the best way to test for gout. Your doctor may also do a blood test to measure the amount of uric acid in your blood. How is it treated? To stop a gout attack, your doctor can give you a shot of corticosteroids or prescribe a large daily dose of one or more medicines. The doses will get smaller as your symptoms go away. Relief from a gout attack often begins within 24 hours if you start treatment right away. To ease the pain during a gout attack, rest the joint that hurts. Taking ibuprofen or another anti-inflammatory medicine can also help you feel better. However aspirin can make gout worse by raising uric acid levels in the blood. ‘Walk of the Ancestors’ to Commemorate the Kells-Australia Connection

Beats, Grooves and Fantastic Moves !!!!

IRD Foilmore-Kells presents the inaugural ‘Walk of the Ancestors’ weekend. It will take place on 21-23 April 2017 in Kells in South Kerry. It commemorates the 150th anniversary of the 1867 Fenian Rising in the Iveragh peninsula. A weekend long programme of events will focus on the Fenian John Golden. Events include a lecture series, re-enactment walk, music, song and dance.

Yes it can only be the 6th CUISLE CHORCA DHUIBHNE Dingle’s Global Rhythm Festival which is now just over 2 months away and happening this year over the June Bank Holiday weekend from 2/6/17 – 5/6/17.

Whilst many of those involved in the Fenian movement at a national level were recognised in the history books, several of those involved in the South Kerry Rising of 1867 have faded into distant memory. However, John Golden’s part in the Fenian Rising was seen as a heroic achievement and was recorded in local South Kerry folklore, most notably in a song composed by Sigerson Clifford: ‘The Ballad of Johnny Golden’. A series of free events will take place over the weekend 21-23 April to mark the 150th commemoration of their involvement in the 1867 Rising. The aim of the weekend is to focus on the local History, Archaeology, Folklore and Tradition in Kells, County Kerry, Ireland. Particular focus is on John Golden who faced imprisonment, transportation and becoming a member of Ireland’s diaspora. Highlights of the programme include: • A lecture series exploring Fenianism in Ireland, the local rising, the social and political legacy, as well as the archaeology of the locality. Guest speakers include: Mr. John O’Donoghue, Former Government Minister, Mr. John Sheehan, University College Cork, Dr. Shane Lordan, University College Dublin and others. • ‘Walk of the Ancestors’ re-enactment where locals and visitors will walk in the footsteps of “when Kells Station was taken by the Boys of Foilmore”. • Unveiling of plaque to commemorate John Golden’s memory and those who participated in the uprising, thus continuing the connections made between Kells, Fremantle and Gerringong Australia.

CCD looks forward to bringing you an eclectic mix of percussion, dance and world music; workshops and masterclasses, performances and demonstrations and all round pristine percussion. So if you’ve lost or mislaid it or just left it gathering dust in the corner – DON’T WORRY!!! Dingle’s Global Rhythm Festival will make sure You Get Your Groove On in 2017. This year CCD is thrilled to host Maracatu Ilha Brilhante- powerfully hypnotic Afro-Brazilian rhythms, dance and song performed by a gathering of maracatu players from all over Ireland. This percussion group specializes in Maracatu Baque Virado (literally means maracatu of the turned around beat) from the pernambuco region of north eastern Brazil. We’re also proud to announce that celebrated djembé master Louis César Ewande (check him out on youtube) will give workshops for both beginners and intermediate players at this years’ festival. Louis will also be performing with some Irish percussionists. This is a rare opportunity to enjoy and learn from a truly gifted musician. These are simply 2 of the highlights of CCD6 2017 the full finalized programme will be published shortly but for updates and further info please check out our website www.cuislecd.com or follow us on Facebook (Dingle’s Global Rhythm Festival). Richie Williams Congratulations -- Students from Pobal Scoil Corca Dhuibhne have been hitting the headlines recently with the under 16 team winning an All Ireland title in the McGirr Cup competition last weekend. The previous week Tomás Ó hUallacháin, Kate Ní Dhubháin and Ciara Ní Bhruic were in the winners enclosure at the National Press Pass Awards for Second level schools. Comhgairdeachas libh go leir agus lean oraibh leis an obair iontach atá faoi lámh agaibh. Many Thanks to the Dingle Fife and Drum Band and the great crowd who turned out to welcome home the winning team on Saturday night which shows how proud the people of Corca Dhuibhne are of our young achievers. Congratulations also to former Pobal Scoil student and Dingle Jockey JACK KENNEDY on his wonderful achievement of riding the opening day winner and hopefully his first of many successes at Cheltenham. We will all be following Jacks career path very closely for financial and patriotic reasons from now on.

Cairde-- We welcome all who are visiting and taking part in the inaugural CAIRDE-FRIENDS MATTER weekend to Corca Dhuibhne and wish Tadhg Ó Beaglaioch and his crew every success with the venture. This registered charity provides peer to peer support for people with life limiting anxiety and depression and will be formally launched here at the weekend. A great variety of activities are planned and no better way to steer clear of depression and other woes than get out and get involved. Slan Tamall!!!.

People Of The Year Awards-- The Dingle Peninsula People Of The Year Awards presentations will be held in Dannos on this Friday March 31st commencing at 9.30p.m. The short list of nominations contains the names of people who have really excelled in the 7 different categories of awards and we eagerly look forward to the final results on Friday. Bígí ann!!!. St. Patricks Day Parades A crowd of well over 500 enthusiasts followed the 6a.m. Parade by the Dingle Fife and Drum Band to continue the unique tradition we have here in our town of marching before dawn on our patrons saints feast day. Despite the predicted deterioration in the weather conditions a great variety of floats, marching groups, vehicles and musical talents took part in the main parade again led by the Fife and Drum Band. Our sincere thanks to all for turning out in such horrible conditions and particularly to the Gárdaí and Stewards who sheparded the entrants safely through the traditional route with minimum traffic delays. To offset the costs repeating to the Parade (insurance etc) Danno is hosting a Brunch on Easter Monday afternoon at 3.30p.m. with tickets available at the usual outlets costing €10 per head. Your support would be much appreciated. Film Festival-- This Festival is really growing in popularity each year and the increased visitor numbers really brought a great spirit into the area last weekend. The positive feedback on Radio, in the Press and on the ground again shows how much we have to offer and hopefully expand on to create much needed employment in the Peninsula. Thanks to Maurice Galway and his team for another wonderful programme and indeed for keeping Dingle to the forefront in the fast changing International Arts Scene. Míle Buíochas.

In Search of Dingle Man

And when the 16th century royal charter was enacted, allowing Dingle to become a medieval walled town, this merchant class had great influence and protection with in its walls.

Martin Hansard

When the treaty of Dingle was co-signed in 1529 by the King of Spain and the Earl of Desmond, giving the people of Munster certain rights within the Austrian-Hungarian empire, my guess is that Dingle Man's great great great great great granfather was looking on. As the ages passed his people most likely had some roll in the linen trade, which was at its height in the 18th century and conceivably laboured or traded at the Holy ground where the linen processing ponds were situated (near the site of the present day Dingle Garda station). It can be safe to assume that Dingle's Man's people were present when the foundation stone of Saint Mary's church was laid in 1802.

To find the origins of quintessential Dingle Man I was going to go back to the obvious time: to the fifth and sixth century AD and the monastic revolution in Ireland. A tangible time of cultural, trade, religious and political links between the Gall and the Gael. After all, our patron saint studied in the French monastries post slavery, only to return to embed Roman rule via the Catholic church. But on second thoughts I felt I had to go back much further in time, thousands of years in fact, to the arrival of the Celts to Hibernia. I'm inclined to half believe in the Leabhar Gabhla (book of invasions) that profers the idea that Ireland was inhabited by waves of different peoples, first the Fir Bolg then the Tuatha De Danann then the Milesians. In my reckoning the Gael originated from a people closely related to the Phoenicians in present day south western Turkey. Over millennia they progessed westward along the Mediterrainian sea and eventually through the Pillars of Hercules to the Atlantic Ocean, rounded the southern tip of the Iberian peninsula and beach-combed north along Portugal or Port of the Gael. The route to Hibernia would have followed around northern Spain or Galicia and on to the Basque country and due north.

English language became an economic necessity and his people became bi-lingual. On Easter 1916 as a child, his father could have been watching from an upstairs window the volunteers silently marching through Dingle town on their long march (An Siúlóid Mór) for their rendez-vous with Roger Casement in Tralee. Today Dingle Man is most likely a business man of some sort, who is both comfortable with speaking through Irish and English, who possibly has a Norman or French name and might have a sallow complexion. If you bump in to a man that fits this description please tell him I'm looking to speak with him, to see if my hunch about Dingle Man is close to the mark.

As a result of the Penal Laws and the Great Hunger that decimated this part of the world, the

I can only assume that they ventured this far north during the Bronze Age for the rich tin deposits in southwest Ireland and Wales; genetic research coincidentally gives the greatest proponderance of the 'Celtic Gene' in these very places. If they came initally to mine for tin ore, that would suggest a much more technically advanced culture; one that came to dominate. Also links have been made with the Gaelic language and a Punic language spoken in Egyptian antiquity. That's probably the reason I always found the Gaelic tongue so exotic. Dingle Man's forebears settled and their new exotic tongue and culture thrived. In the south west of the island a Gaelic Kingdom called Corca Dhuibhne grew. West Kerry was a perfect strategic place; with the physical protection of the mountains to east and unfettered access the to sea and the essential trade routes of the western sea board. In a natural harbour the permenant settlement Daingean Uí Chúis was established, later to be Anglisised to Dingle. The easy accessible trade routes to Europe and France in particular have a major bearing of unearthing the next gene change of Dingle Man. French merchants, in the main, used these routes to establish a thriving wine trade; think of Wine Strand in the town land of An Raisc. Some of these French traders and merchants would have assimilated and intermarried with the indigenous, becoming more Gael than the Gael themselves. The Norman conquest in the twelfth century would have increased the French connection to Corca Dhuibhne, that's why my Dingle Man on balance might have a Norman surname, derived from them or their merchant precursors.

Mini-7S: Pride of place this week goes to the Realt Na Mara National School, Cromane, boys team that won the Mid Kerry Mini 7’s for the first time in the school’s history last Thursday. The team played excellent football throughout the competition, that was played in the Community Field in Cromane. They beat Curraheen, Boheshill and Castlemaine in the group stages, before winning agaisnt Glenbeigh in quarter-final and Caragh Lake in the semi-final. They set up a meeting with Fybough National School, Keel, in the final. They once again excelled winning the final by 4-4 to 3-3. Well done to all involved in the preparing the team, including all their teachers but especially to their coach Kevin Corkery. The team now go on to represent Mid Kerry in the county stages of the competition next week The panel included: Charlie Foley, Cian Lyons, Liam O’Neill, Darragh Crosby, Matthew Naughton, Joshua O’Sullivan, Liam Hayes, Conor Hayes, Tony Óg Duffy, Jack McGrath, John O’Connor, Luka O’Sullivan, Billy Counihan, Jamie Casey, and captain Noah Falvey. Minors – County Minor League Division 5 (Round 4): Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane 1-6, Renard/St Mary’s 4-6 The combined forces of the Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane (GGC) minors were taught the lesson of “goals win games” in this county league clash in sun-kissed Glenbeigh on Saturday afternoon. There was no huge gulf in class, apart from Renard/St Mary’s full-forward Eoghan McDaid who hit two quick-fire goals in the first half and gave a classy display all-round. McDaid’s second goal put the visitors 3-3 to 0-2 ahead. It was a lead they would never relinquish. We actually started well, despite the concession of an early goal, and points from Brice Dourieu and Jack O’Shea left us two adrift 1-1 to 0-2 after 15 minutes. Then the South Kerry men took over and added on those McDaid goals. GGC’s Shane Ahern - who battled bravely throughout - hit an injury time goal in the first half to give us some hope, 3-3 to 1-2 behind at the break. On the resumption we got going for the first time in the game and kicked three quick unanswered points to leave just four between the sides, 3-3 to 1-5 – but that was as good as it got. Renard/St Mary’s kicked a further 1-3 to regain control and run out relatively easy winners. The Cromane players involved included Brice Dourieu, Jack O’Shea, Jack O’Grady, Padhraic McMahon, Cathal Crosby, Ethan Griffin, Jack Clifford (who spent the day marking Maurice Fitzgerald’s son Muiris), Shane Ahern, and Conor Sugrue. Scorers for GGC: Shane Ahern 1-0, Gearóid Griffin 0-2 (0-1 free), Brice Dourieu, Jack O’Grady, Jack O’Shea, Adrian O’Connor 0-1 each. Seniors: Cromane 0-11, Churchill 1-14 Our first loss of this year’s Division 5 arrived in Churchill on Sunday afternoon and, after a poor first half when we trailed 1-10 to 0-4 at the break, we can have few complaints. A good start is always half the battle and, unfortunately, we never really got going in the first 30 minutes. We were down 1-3 to no score after 15 minutes, playing into a stiff cross-field breeze and with the unseasonal sun beating down on our backs. We had to wait until the 17th minute before registering our first score: a fine effort from play by Micheál Shaughnessy. Paul Patrick O’Sullivan kicked the first of his five points for the day soon after to steady the ship a little at 1-3 to 0-2. However, we allowed Churchill to regain control with Cillian Fitzgerald impressing at midfield and they went on to hit the next seven points without reply before Paul Patrick

O’Sullivan and Liam Walsh, in injury time, left it 1-10 to 0-4 at the interval. It could have been worse but for a fine double-stop from our new goalkeeper Sean Teahan midway through that first half. In fairness we restarted very well. We had our best phase of the game with points from Paul Patrick O’Sullivan (from play), Mikey Houlihan (who looked dangerous when the ball was played into him in the second half) and Liam Walsh bringing us to within six, 1-10 to 0-7, with 20 left. Mikey Houlihan then had a great goal chance, after doing all the hard work himself, but his goal effort slipped by the far post. We had chances to turn the screw but some interesting decisions went against us. Churchill kicked two fine points to extend their lead to seven, 1-12 to 0-7. Once again – and to our credit – we battled back with the next three scores, all frees, from Darren Houlihan (two, one nicely clipped over from 40m out) and Paul Patrick O’Sullivan. Mikey Houlihan then forced the Churchill goalkeeper into another fine stop before Paul Patrick chipped over our final point. Churchill tacked on the last point with the game’s final kick to run out deserved 1-14 to 0-11 winners. It was that 15-20 minutes in the first half when Churchill got the run on us and kicked those seven unanswered points that told in the end. We left ourselves with a mountain to climb in the second half and, despite winning it 0-7 to 0-4, it was always going to be a tough ask to reel in that half-time nine-point deficit. Next up in the league for our senior team is a home game against Tuosist in Cromane on the weekend of April 8/9. After that we have our opening junior championship game in Lispole, so there’s plenty to look forward to. A lot done, more to do. Team and scorers: Seán Teahan; Liam Teahan, Eoghan Walsh, Ian Costelloe; Shane Ahern, Brendan Foley, Finbar Casey; Liam Walsh 0-2, Matt Colborne, Darren Houlihan 0-2 frees, Paul Patrick O’Sullivan 0-5 (0-4 frees), Micheál Shaughnessy 0-1, Mikey Houlihan 0-1, Emmet Casey, Lee Carey. In this delightful little book Greta carries us to the country side and introduces us to the wonderful world of herbs. It is full of easy to read passages that have all the facts a reader is looking for on the subject, how to recognize them in the wild and how to grow them in the garden. Throughout the book the reader can feel Greta’s passion for herbs and the great outdoors. It feels like she is there with the reader, guiding and educating. Herbs such as pak choi, and mizuna give the book an exotic flavor and a notion to go outside and search for them. Information on what herbs compliment which foods to enhance their flavour is clear and concise. Wonderfully photographed by Rob Beighton the natural beauty of herbs is revealed. This book is a lovely treat for anyone interested in the natural world and is a great reference guide for those looking to grow their own. A brief extract from Greta’s Herbs- Growing wild in the West of Ireland

Container Growing This is a convenient and easy way to cultivate herbs, particularly for those of us with busy work schedules. Herbs can be grown successfully in all sorts of containers and in the smallest of spaces. I often get asked if herbs can be grown inside. I usually answer ‘no’. I prefer to give them a permanent position outside as this tends to be the healthiest environment. Moving pots inside to a polytunnel or greenhouse for brief periods of time in early spring and late autumn may extend harvesting however if left inside in the height of the summer many herb plants become susceptible to greenfly and whitefly attack and often lacklustre. Outside the plants absorb all the nutrients from the rain and sun, and overall are hardier and more prolific. The only exceptions to this rule are certain tender varieties such as basil and other tropical exotics. The other great advantage of container-grown herbs is that pots can be moved around and rearranged so it is much easier to give plants their ideal location. If a plant is not growing successfully it may be caused by too much sun - particularly in the case of salad herbs - or too much shade in the case of thyme. Move herbs if necessary! Planting Herbs The most important thing when planting herbs in long-term containers is to use the correct pot size and the correct mix. Compost on its own has a poor composition and once it dries out can be difficult to re-water. If you purchase small potted herbs (9-10cm), replant them in slightly larger pots and increase the pot size as the plant matures. This gradual potting on process promotes vigorous growth and encourages a strong root system. Individual herbs planted into very large pots often rot as their roots cannot absorb the excessive moisture retained -- particularly after heavy rainfall. Several varieties planted together in the same container will prove more successful.

Please bear with us as we are trying to update contact details of all new members. If you are not receiving club notes, please contact me and I will be delighted to include you on our mailing list. If you have new contact details, you can private message me (Deirdre O’ Sullivan) on my Facebook Page with them or call/text on 086/1703332. Senior League: Division 1: Our seniors were away to Rahilly’s on Saturday last. Both Milltown Castlemaine and Kerins O' Rahilly’s lined out without a number of regulars but still served up a highly competitive affair -with never more than a couple of points separating the teams. Rahilly’s went in up a point at half time on a score of 8pts to 7pts. The second half resumed with an exchange of points that saw Milltown Castlemaine take the lead before an opportunistic goal by Rahilly’s saw them take the lead by 2. Milltown Castlemaine fought back to earn a deserved point after two O' Rahilly’s players saw red in their efforts to keep Milltown Castlemaine at bay. David Roche and Pa Wrenn at midfield were outstanding despite conceding height difference to their opponents and defensively Stephen Roche and Nigel Wrenn led from the front. Top scorers on the day were Jonathon O'Sullivan, Cathal Moriarty with Pa Wrenn and Jerome Flynn also contributing.

The Popular Mind in Eighteenth-Century Ireland le Vincent Morley This book is a study of the Irish popular mind between the late seventeenth and the early nineteenth centuries. It examines the collective assumptions, aspirations, fears, resentments and prejudices of the common people as they are revealed in the vernacular [Irish] literature of the period. The topics investigated include: politics, religion, historical memory, European conflicts, Anglo-Irish patriotism, agrarian agitation, the tumultuous 1790s and the rise of Daniel O’Connell. Extensive use is made of contemporary song and verse preserved in literary manuscripts from the eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries - an essential source that has previously been neglected by historians. Elements of both continuity and change are identified, and the evolution of popular attitudes is traced over 150 years from the Williamite conquest to O’Connell’s campaign for Repeal of the Union.’- Cló Ollscoile Chorcaí A book by a genuine historian is a welcome relief from the tracts produced by the academic pseudo-historians of the past forty years.

Half Time.

The players drop off bags and spare clothes. If they were being cool before, there is no need now. They are illuminous with anticipation. But they’ve got to go. Back down. To their waiting seats. Then lining up.

Colin Sheeran In the stands before throw in there is nervous chatter. Lots of it. Staccato explanations. Double checking, triple checking seat numbers and tickets. The official comes up. He’s wearing official Croke Park gear. He has an official clip board and the easy manner of someone who knows what he is doing. This is the bigtime. He explains that when the women’s match is over, the team will go down to the dressing rooms and get their kit. They’ll come back out and wait. They’ll watch the first half of the main game from the lower canal. Then it’s show time – the half time game in Croke Park. Under floodlights in front of a crowd of twenty two thousand, five hundred and three people. The under twelves are excited but are careful to keep looking cool. The adults looking after them are just as excited but have long ago forgotten how to look cool. So they go with it. The pride and happiness is bursting out of parents in jokes and laughing and announcements and pointless clapping of the hands.

Half time blows. The teams move out, marching is the right word, out to centre field. They look so grown up and so small. The match begins. It’s green against red and black. The pace is frenetic. For the full first minute everyone who touches the ball shoots. No matter where he is on the pitch. No matter where anyone else is on the pitch. As if the whistle will blow for time after no time. It settles down to just one hundred and fifty miles an hour. There is some lovely fielding. If the mark was in here, we’d have had a few. The skill and the speed is a thing of beauty. They’re absolutely flying. He tries, he tries, he fails, he tries, he pulls one around the corner with the left. Beautiful. He catches, goes past one, two and rockets to the top left corner. He might burst with happiness as you might too. Half time finishes. The under twelves line up and wave as they parade off the pitch. There’s photo’s together, there’s photo’s with that midfield legend of yesteryear. They come all the way back up to the stand with an infectious wonder that makes for a sweeter world.

The women’s match, good match, finishes. The under twelves line up and file down the stand, through the seats, to far below. There is a pause at the bottom. They are heading into the unknown. Into the restricted area where usually you can not go. One lad punches the air in celebration at going into the tunnel. There is a lull for the parents. The mothers say I hope he will be alright. The fathers say of course he will be alright. They are comfort to each other in their own way. The non-main event starts; it’s a welcome distraction and you can shout, shout loud for your team. It’s a good release. After ten minutes the under twelves file back out of the tunnel. They are wearing the county colours. Fathers are an inch taller than they have been since they were in their twenties.

Public Petitions Question There is an important issue that I feel isn’t being considered by the Oireachtas but should be. I’ve heard that it is possible to make a petition directly to a parliamentary petitions committee. How does this work? Answer The Joint Committee on Public Petitions considers petitions from members of the public on matters in which the Houses of the Oireachtas have the power to act. Anyone except for members of the Oireachtas can submit a petition. To make a petition, you fill out a form which is available on the Oireachtas website oireachtas.ie. The form can be submitted by post, by email or online and only one signature is required. The committee secretariat can assist you in completing the form and can also give advice on the type of petitions which can be accepted. You should be able to show that you have already taken steps to resolve the issue, for example, through raising it with the Ombudsman or directly with the relevant government department. The Joint Committee will not consider a complaint which has been the subject of a decision by an Ombudsman, a regulatory public body or a body set up for the purpose

of redress. 21/08/2014 16:57 Page 1 If the petition is accepted, the Committee may respond to it in a number of ways. It may:

Project4:Layout 1

· Refer the petition to another appropriate committee, Ombudsman, regulatory public body or redress body · Report to the Dáil and Seanad with recommendations

· Request the petitioner to attend a meeting and address the committee The parliamentary petitions system is a way that you can take your concerns directly to Parliament and seek to influence the parliamentary agenda. Further information on the Joint Committee on Public Petitions is available on oireachtas.ie or from the Citizens Information Centre below.
