Greetings,

2012 Titan Soccer

Thank you for your interest in Westminster College and our Titan soccer teams. I hope that you will find the 2012 Titan Soccer Guide beneficial as you learn about our team. Westminster soccer players benefit from the opportunity to compete at a regional level. Our teams have won eight conference championships (5 women’s, 3 men’s) since 2002 and made eight trips to the NCAA Division III tournament during that span. Sixteen players (9 women, 7 men) have earned 22 all-region selections since 1998. Our regional success is a testament to our challenging nonconference schedules that often include multiple teams ranked in the Top 10 in our region. We don’t just recruit players locally. Many student-athletes realize the value of a high-level soccer program and a Westminster education and travel great distances to contribute to our success. The type of student-athlete we recruit excels on the field and in the classroom with many players earning recognition on the Academic All-District and Academic All-America teams. Our school and its administration have recognized the importance of our soccer programs. Since adding our women’s team in 1998, they have made positive strides in improving both our men’s and women’s soccer facilities including new locker rooms, a new international size grass field, and a field with artificial turf and lights for night games. We are proud of our soccer programs here at Westminster and we challenge more quality studentathletes to help continue our success.

Having coached the Westminster College men’s and women’s soccer teams concurrently since 2002 and the men’s team since 1998, Girish Thakar has won a combined 283 wins and eight conference championships, while making 12 postseason appearances. Since Thakar took over both teams ten years ago, Westminster has qualified for the NCAA Championships eight times, including three for the men (2002, 2004, 2008) and five for the women (2002-05, 2007). In addition, the eight Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) titles the Titans have collected includes three for the men (2002, 2006, 2008) and five for the women (200204, 2006-07). Thakar was named PAC Coach of the Year four times, three for women’s soccer (2002, 2005, 2006) and one for men’s (2008). Both teams won the PAC title in the same year in 2002 and 2006, with the latter considered Thakar’s finest year of coaching as both teams won the league crowns as underdogs and qualified for the postseason in the ECAC Division III South Championships. Thakar enters his 15th season with the men and 11th with the women in 2012 for a combined record of 283-184-34 (.599). Thakar’s 14-year record as Westminster’s men’s coach is 146-118-16 (.550), including a teamrecord 17-6 mark in 2008 after the Titans won the PAC title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament. Thakar took the reins of the Westminster women’s program on an interim basis in 2002, then was named permanent head coach prior to the 2003 season. During the past 10 seasons, the Titan women are a combined 137-66-18 (.661) with five PAC championships and four-straight NCAA tournament appearances from 2002-05. Prior to coaching at Westminster, Thakar was the head men’s coach at his alma mater, Slippery Rock University, from 1993-96, after graduating from SRU in 1991. As a player at Slippery Rock, Thakar was a four-year starter who earned all-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference honors. Thakar earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Westminster in May of 2012. His youth coaching experience includes stints as a staff coach with United States Soccer Federation (USSF) and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

Women’s Assistant Coach

Stephanie Ricketts begins her third season as the assistant coach for the Westminster women’s soccer team in 2012. She came to Westminster from Adrian College where she was an assistant women’s soccer coach for three seasons, including the team’s interim head coach for six months during the spring of 2008. During her three years as an assistant soccer coach at Adrian, the Bulldogs improved their record each season including the 2009 team that went 11-6-2 and placed second in the MIAA conference and ranked 10th in the Central Region by the NSCAA. That team also produced four all-conference players, one all-region player and its starting goalkeeper, Rickett’s area of expertise, ranked 25th in the nation. As a player, Ricketts was a four-year starting goalkeeper at Goucher College in her hometown of Baltimore, Md., where she graduated with honors in psychology in 2007. She posted the second-highest save percentage in the CAC conference in 2006 and became just the fourth goalkeeper in school history to reach 300 career saves. She is pursuing a master’s degree in education at Westminster while coaching the women’s team. She holds a USSF National “D” Coaching License and an NSCAA National Goalkeeping Diploma.

T

Men’s Season Outlook

he Westminster College men’s soccer team looks to bounce back in 2012 from last season where they missed the Presidents’ Athletic Conference playoffs for only the second time since they joined the league in 2002. The Titans, who posted a 4-14 recorded in 2011 and a 2-6 mark in the PAC, are ready to contend in the conference with some new faces and a handful of returners. Westminster brings back nine lettermen, six starters and 16 newcomers. Junior forward David Osae (Arlington, Texas/Lawrence D. Bell) is the only returning All-PAC honoree for the Titans. Osae is also the top returning goal-scorer with three in his second year as a starter. “Although David is one of the most talented players in our league, I’m not sure how any solid program can work their whole offense around one player,” said Girish Thakar, who enters his 15th year as head coach in 2012.” “One thing I know is we need David on the pitch and playing consistently over the whole season. I think we will have some players that will surprise our opponents.” Westminster has six returning starters including goalie Adam Kephart (Beaver Falls, PA / Beaver County Christian) and midfielder Josh Cantella (Freedom, PA / Freedom) who join midfielder Zach Meluch

(Newton Falls, OH / Southeast) as the trio of seniors. Sophomore defender Shane Noteboom (Hurst, TX / The Oakridge School), sophomore midfielders Dan Bishop (Burlington, NJ / Holy Cross) and Ryan Francis (Harwick, PA / Springdale), and junior goalkeeper Joe Bonish (Newport News, VA / Woodside) round out the returning starters for the Titans. Due to graduation, Westminster lost three of their top scorers from 2011, which were Jake Huey (6 goals), Coty Hainsey (4 goals), and James Gross (4 goals). Their goals accounted for 64 percent (14 of 22) of the goals scored last season, however coach Thaker is optimistic for the 2012 offense. “I think we would like to have a balanced attack from both our forwards and midfielders, however I feel that in order to have a successful season someone will have to score 13 to 15 goals,” added Thakar. “I am very happy with this year’s forwards and I believe there is someone in this group that is going to have an outstanding season.” Titan goalies Kephart and Bonish will both be vying for the starting position between the pipes. The duo split duties a season ago for a combined 112 saves, with Kephart leading with 58. Bonish had the winning edge with three wins including a shutout, while Kephart had one victory. Eighty percent of Westminster’s 2012 team is underclassmen with some competing to make an immediate impact. Sophomore Anthony Humes (Darlington, England, / The Hummersknott Academy) provided a spark in his first year as he played in 13 games with three starts and totaled five points (2 goals, 1 assist). “I expect the underclassmen to challenge for starting positions and to bring our team the competition needed to get the best out of everyone,” said Thakar. “I am not sure who is going to step up and lead, however the players that will stand out will have the leadership qualities I will be looking for.”

Women’s Season Outlook W

Senior Jenn Cantella

10

westminster.edu/athletics

estminster’s women’s soccer team absorbed a rare 7-10-1 record in 2011. A five-time Presidents’ Athletic Conference champion, the Titans’ losing record a year ago is only the second occurrence in its 14 years of existence. Despite this, Westminster won three of its last four contests and was one win away from making the postseason which provides motivation for this year. “The key to this year is consistency,” said 11th year head coach Girish Thakar. “We need enough wins to be in the top four within the conference so we can make the playoffs. There are a lot of good teams in the PAC and a lot games can be decided by one goal.” Westminster’s 2011 all-PAC honorees, Tyler Dever (first team), Samantha Killmeyer (second team), Kelli Michanowicz (honorable mention) and Shanay Phillian (honorable mention), have graduated, therefore the Titans will rely on their 13 returning letterwinners, that includes six starters, to carry them to the success that the program is accustomed to. Team captain and senior goalie Jenn Cantella (Freedom, PA / Freedom) leads the way with two years of starting experience in the net. In 2011, Cantella was top five within the conference in five different categories including save percentage (2nd/.817), saves (2nd/107), saves per game (3rd/5.94), shutouts (3rd/4.5), and goals against average (5th/1.35). “Cantella’s experience really helps,” said Thakar. “I expect even more from her this year.” The other five returning starters in-

clude junior forward Amanda Turi (Monroeville, PA / Gateway), junior midfielder Jordan Steele (Falconer, NY / Falconer Central), junior midfielder Maggie Nikituk (Pittsburgh, PA / North Allegheny), junior defender Katie Brown (Gibsonia, PA / Pine-Richland), and sophomores forward Kerri Inzinga (Monroeville, PA / Gateway) and midfielder Rachael Boyes (Smithville, OH / Smithville). Turi is the top-scorer of the returning starters with two goals in her first year a starter. Senior midfielder Maura Miglioretti (Monroeville, PA / Gateway) adds experience since she played in 16 games with two goals as a key reserve in 2011. Junior midfielder Kristina Tissue (Coraopolis, PA / West Allegheny) also played a pivotal role off the bench a year ago with two goals in 15 games played. Westminster is excited to see what its 18 newcomers have to offer on the field in 2012. “The freshman seem enthusiastic and will contribute in one way or another,” said Thakar. “Until they play against other college players, we won’t know exactly who will separate themselves from the pack, but I’m excited see who will step up.”

estminster College has a proud athletics heritage that is steeped with a tradition of winning. Although the College was founded in 1852, varsity athletics at Westminster did not become prevalent until 1884. Beginning in 1926, the sports teams at Westminster became known as the “Titans,” after a The Original “Towering Titans” of 1926-27 sportswriter for the student newspaper, The Holcad, nicknamed the resurgent basketball team the “Towering Titans” because of younger, taller men that made up the starting lineup. The athletics program at Westminster became best known for the success of its football and men’s basketball teams. The Titan football team won six NAIA National Championships from 1970-94 and 71% (398-157-10) of its games since 1952. The men’s basketball team, honored by the Associated Press as the nation’s top small college team in 1962, was the all-time winningest NAIA team before Westminster joined the NCAA in 1998.

Left to right: Kristin Zukowski, the 1991 NAIA champion in the 100-yard butterfly; Phil Rice, Westminster’s first-ever All-American in 1932; Harold Davis, a College Football Hall of Fame inductee in 2004 who was the football team’s only three-time, first-team All-American from 1954-56.

estminster student-athletes enjoy access to outstanding athletics facilities on campus. With the exception of the golf teams, all of the Titans compete and practice on campus in one centralized location. Each team has access to its own locker room in the Memorial Field House, which is also a short walking distance to all venues.

Soccer Fields

Westminster soccer plays its home games at two on-campus facilities. The natural grass soccer field (below) opened for the 2000 season. It is located east of Brittain Lake. A new scoreboard (right) was installed prior to the 2004 season. The soccer teams also play home games – mostly night games – at Harold Burry Stadium (above) beginning for the 2008 season when new artificial FieldTurf and lighting was installed.

The PAC F

ounded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 select private institutions in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky, the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports (10 men, nine women).
