The Westminster volleyball team, 20-12, 11-7 in the PAC in 2011, lost in the 2011 PAC semifinals last season; something the program is not use to being a fourtime conference champion. Westminster will strive to be more consistent in order to get back to PAC playoff contention. “We have the ability to play at a high level, but last season we did not do it consistently,” said head coach Tammy Swearingen. “We need to stay focused with a positive competitive attitude.” Under Swearingen, the Titans have had 13 seasons with 20 or more wins and a pair of 30-win seasons. “In order to be successful, you need to

They were determined to win and weren’t afraid to hold each other accountable.” The Titans have allPAC honorees junior defensive specialist Tara Incerpi (Carrollton, OH / Minerva), junior middle blocker Rebecca Riemer (Pittsburgh, PA / Mount Lebanon), and sophomore Megan Romocean (Ravenna, OH / Southeast) returning to guide the Titans. On offense, three of Westminster’s top attackers are returning for the 2012 season. Reimer led the Titans with 334 kills. Romocean was third with 238, while Lexi Starheim (Hubbard, OH / Hubbard) earned 151. Incerpi, the leader of the defense, is back for her final season. Incerpi earned a team-best 440 digs. She also had a team-high 55 aces. Reimer and Junior Rebecca Riemer sophomore Kassie Freyermuth (Allison Park, PA / North Allegheny) led the Titans with 100 and 90 blocks, respectively, a season ago.

The NCAA allows teams to travel abroad once every four years. For the first time in team history, the Westminster volleyball team committed to the opportunity. The Titans spent a week in the Barbados Aug. 6-12, 2011, during which the team played the Barbados National Team and two other club teams.

Westminster is always a contender for the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship. Since joining the PAC in 2002, the Titans advanced to at least the semifinal round of the league tournament in all nine years including championships in 2002, 2007 and 2008.

Coaching Staff

When Tammy Swearingen won her 400th career match as the head coach of the Westminster College volleyball team in 2010 she became one of only 32 active NCAA Division III volleyball coaches to reach the milestone. Swearingen enters her 20th season as head coach in 2012 including her 12th season serving as Westminster’s assistant director of athletics. Swearingen boasts an 19-year career record of 430-243 (.639) including 13 seasons with 20 or more wins and a pair of 30-win seasons. Swearingen was named Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Coach of the Year for three straight years from 2006-08 while guiding Westminster to back-to-back PAC titles and the school’s first two automatic bids to the NCAA Division III Tournament in 2007 and 2008. The Titans won three PAC titles under Swearingen since becoming eligible for the league crown in 2002. Prior to joining NCAA Division III and the PAC, Swearingen led the Titans to the ECAC Division II Championship in 2001 and the NAIA’s Keystone-Empire Collegiate Conference (KECC) title in 1997 and 1994. The 1997 team also won the NAIA Northeast Region tournament title and went to the NAIA national tournament for the first time. Prior to coming to Westminster in 1992, she was head volleyball coach at Mineral Ridge (1988-90) and Columbiana (1986-88) High Schools in her native Ohio. She was head women’s swimming coach at her alma mater, Youngstown State University, from 1984-87 (producing five AllAmericans) after graduating from YSU in 1983.

Brandon Lewis enters his 16th season as an assistant coach in 2012. Lewis, who played scholastically at Farrell High and collegiately at Ohio State University, has coached at Hubbard (Ohio) High School as well as at several summer camps in the region. Lewis and his wife, Katie, and daughter, Rogen, reside in Farrell. He is a teacher in the Farrell School District.

Shannon Liposky begins her sixth year as an assistant coach in 2012. Liposky, formerly Shannon Simmons, played at Westminster before graduating in 2002 with a degree in elementary education. She then stayed on with the program for an additional year as a graduate assistant coach before finishing her master’s degree in education in 2005. A three-year starter at right side hitter for the Titans from 1998-2001, Liposky was team MVP as a senior while leading the Titans to a 27-8 record. In 2011, she was inducted into the Titan Sports Hall of Fame. She and her husband, Rob, and daughter, Claire, reside in her hometown of East Palestine, Ohio. Justine Elliott begins her first year as an assistant coach in 2012. Elliott played middle blocker at the University of New Hampshire, an NCAA Division I school. She earned a full NCAA athletic scholarship and graduated in 2011 with a degree in journalism and a minor in Spanish. A twotime team captain, Elliott competed in two American East Conference Championships and was also tabbed on the all-tournament team in 2009. A three-year starter at middle blocker for the Wildcats from 2007-2011, Elliott led the team in blocks three-straight years. Her career-best 96 blocks during her sophomore season stands 10th all-time in school history. Elliott also was the recipient of the Ed Jentes Coaches’ Award and was named to the conference honor roll during her career. A Mitchellville, Md. native, Elliott is currently working on her master’s at Westminster. Bradi Rhoades enters his second year on the Titan volleyball staff in 2012. Rhoades is also entering his sixth year on the track and field staff as jumps coordinator and pole vault coach. A Slippery Rock University graduate, Rhoades was a six-time all-conference pole vaulter from 2002-04. He most recently served as an assistant track and field coach at Wilmington High School. A Waynesburg, Pa. native, Rhoades earned a master’s degree in secondary education and bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Slippery Rock. Rhoades resides in New Castle with his wife Katie and daughter Lyndlea.

Volleyball: Taylor Frank Raises Funds for Good Cause

For the past two years, Westminster College freshman volleyball player Taylor Frank has taken her efforts off of the court to help organize an annual benefit to raise money and awareness for the Brain Aneurysm Foundation. The event is a 5K race called The Bunny Hop that is held in honor of Frank’s mother, Becky Frank, who passed away from a brain aneurysm. This year’s event raised $10,000 and had 430 participants. Taylor helps organize the event with her sister Carly, her father Tim, along with several friends of the family. “The event to us is mostly a way to give back to the Brain Aneurysm Foundation for all that they did for us while my mom was sick for just a short time,” Taylor said. “When my mom was first diagnosed with the brain aneurysm, it was too late because it had already ruptured. We honestly had no clue what it really meant and the Brain Aneurysm Foundation website gave us some great insight as to what it was.” “We really enjoy celebrating my mom’s life through the event, and simply by the number of people we can tell how many people really did care about my mom and how many people she helped throughout her life,” Taylor said. The Frank family continues its efforts to increase awareness about brain aneurysms through their support of the Brain Aneurysm Foundation so that other families can be knowledgeable of possible symptoms. “The Bunny Hop is also a way to spread awareness about brain aneurysms which is most important in diagnosing them,” Taylor said. “The Brain Aneurysm Foundation is the world’s only nonprofit organization solely dedicated to providing critical awareness, education, support and research funding to reduce the incidence of brain aneurysm ruptures.” The Bunny Hop will continue to be a great event to support families that have been affected by brain aneurysms, as well as honoring the memory of Becky Frank. Women’s Volleyball Earn AVCA Team Academic Award for 2011-2012 The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced on July 20, 2012 that 533 teams have earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2011-2012 season. Helping the AVCA achieve a new all-time high for the award was Westminster College. The Lady Titans, under the guidance of 20th-year head coach Tammy Swearingen, have earned the program’s first AVCA Team Academic Award. The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale. The Team Academic Award has become one of the AVCA’s fastest growing awards programs, seeing an impressive surge in teams honored over the past several years. Since the 2000-2001 season, the number of recipients has increased every single year but one, while amassing an overall 200 percent increase over the span of the last decade. Since the award’s inception in 1993, the award has risen by an astounding 760 percent.

Dr. Richard H. Dorman Towering Titan Organization College President

Dr. Richard H. Dorman took office as the 14th President of Westminster College in 2008. President Dorman previously served as vice president for institutional advancement at Otterbein College since 1996. He served as assistant vice president for development (1994-96) and director of health sciences development at the University of Louisville (1990-94) following four years as an executive with the Penn State Alumni Association. A 1975 graduate of Susquehanna University, Dorman earned his master’s and his doctorate from Penn State University.

Jim Dafler

Director of Athletics Jim Dafler enters his 14th year as director of athletics at Westminster College in 2012-13. Dafler was selected as the chairman of the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Committee for the 2008-09 season, the final year of a four-year term as a committee member. Dafler was Westminster’s head men’s basketball coach from 1998-2003 after spending nine years as an assistant coach. He was also the Titans’ track and field coach for nine years. A 1971 graduate of Capital University, Dafler earned his master’s from Ohio University.

Providing support for Westminster’s athletic programs is the Towering Titan Organization (TTO), formed in 1976 around a core of devoted, loyal and intensely interested alumni, parents and friends. The organization purposes itself to help maintain, improve and endow Westminster College’s athletic programs. Over $3 million in gifts have been contributed to the Towering Titan Fund since its inception. The annual income is distributed in this manner: 90 percent of all donations go directly to the sport(s) chosen (donations can be designated to a specific sport for men or women), with 10 percent going towards the operation and promotion of the fund. All 20 varsity sports for men and women benefit from the fund. A minimum gift of $30 qualifies a donor for membership. Members receive a membership card and decal, issues of the Towering Titan Newsletter and invitations to social events such as golf outings each July, and recognition dinners and ceremonies that are scheduled periodically. Qualifying gifts are also recognized through membership in Westminster’s Giving Clubs. estminster College has a proud athletics heritage that is steeped with a tradition of winning. Although the College was founded in 1852, varsity athletics at Westminster did not become prevalent until 1884. Beginning in 1926, the sports teams at Westminster became known as the “Titans,” after a The Original “Towering Titans” of 1926-27 sportswriter for the student newspaper, The Holcad, nicknamed the resurgent basketball team the “Towering Titans” because of younger, taller men that made up the starting lineup. The athletics program at Westminster became best known for the success of its football and men’s basketball teams. The Titan football team won six NAIA National Championships from 1970-94 and 71% (398-157-10) of its games since 1952. The men’s basketball team, honored by the Associated Press as the nation’s top small college team in 1962, was the all-time winningest NAIA team before Westminster joined the NCAA in 1998.

Titan Tradition

n the 2011-12 academic year there were 424 varsity athletes at Westminster, including 45 multi-sport athletes. There are currently 20 varsity sports teams at Westminster that compete in Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) and NCAA Division III. In the last eight years, 11 Westminster teams have either qualified for the NCAA Tournament or sent athletes to the NCAA Championship meet. Westminster joined the NCAA Division III and the PAC in 2000-01 and became eligible for championships and awards in 2002-03.

The PAC F

ounded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 select private institutions in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky, the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports (10 men, nine women).
