he 2013-14 Westminster College women’s basketball team returns eight letterwinners from a year ago, including seniors Gabby Holko, Hannah Shaffer, and Courtney Zitt. Holko and Shaffer are three-time letterwinners, while Zitt lettered twice (she did not play last season because of an injury). “We are hoping the seniors take ownership of the team this season,” said head coach Rosanne Scott, who is entering her 12-th year at the helm. “We are hoping that, because of their game experience, they set the tone for the rest of the players.” Holko, who started in 16 games last year, is the returning top-scorer. She averaged 9.9 points per game which ranked in the top-20 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), while scoring in double-digits in 14 contests. Holko provides a deep threat for the Titans as she was second on the team and 10th in the PAC last year with 37 made three-pointers. Her 105 career three-point field goals currently stand sixth all-time in school history. Holko was also second on the team with 32 steals. Shaffer dished-out 2.4 assists per game last season, good for second on the team and 12th in the PAC. She led the Titan defense with

47 steals which stood 12th in the conference. Zitt, who only played in three games last year due to injury, looks to be the leader in the paint for Westminster. Zitt, an All-PAC honoree as a sophomore, was averaging 9.0 points and 6.3 rebounds per game before the injury. “We are obviously excited to have Courtney back,” Scott said. “She worked hard rehabbing to be able to get back out on the court with her team. Grandy, Holko and Shaffer did a great job stepping up last year after the team experienced injuries. This year we are expecting them to take on an even bigger role and I know they are up for the challenge.” Another key returner is junior Jenna Grandy who had a break-out year last and provided a spark for the Titans off the bench. Grandy averaged a career-high 6.0 points per game. She was also third on the team with 29 made three-pointers, while her 39.2 three-point field percentage led the team and also broke a school record. Juniors Allison Borts and Courtney Klein and sophomores Andrea Marsh and Amanda Sloan will make a push for playing time this season. Marsh appeared in the most games out of the four with 23 games, followed by Klein who played in 17. Four Titan newcomers will be expected to step up this year and make an impact. “We are going to ask a lot out of our younger players,” said Scott. “We are hoping our team matures quickly. It will be exciting to see who steps up. We cannot be the same team in November that we want to be in January. Our goal is to get better every day.”

Coaching Staff

The 11 years under head coach Rosanne Scott are the most successful span in the history of the Westminster College women’s basketball program. Entering her 12th year as head coach in 2013-14, Scott guided Westminster to a pair of 20-win seasons and berths in the NCAA Division III Tournament in 2005 and 2007. The 2005 team won the program’s first and only Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Championships and advanced to the second round of the national tournament, while the 2007 team set a new school record for wins with a 22-7 record before qualifying for the NCAA playoffs. Scott, a two-time PAC Coach of the Year, owns a 11-year record of 141154 (.478), including a 71-77 record (.480) in PAC games. The Titans played in the PAC championship game in five out of seven years from 2004-10. At the age of 24, Scott was the youngest collegiate basketball coach in the country at any level at the time she was hired in April 2002. In her second season she was named PAC Coach of Year after leading the team to the PAC tournament finals. Some of the best players in program history have played under Scott, including Emilee Ackerman (2004-08), Desiree Sterling (2003-07) and Erica Tallo (2001-05), three of the top four scorers in school history. Ackerman became the program’s first player to earn an honorable mention for the All-America team after she ranked third in the nation in scoring (23.5 points per game) in 2008 and became the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,483 points. Prior to being promoted to head coach, Scott served as assistant coach for two seasons at Westminster, first as an athletic assistant in 2000-01, and then as a full-time assistant in 2001-02. Scott is a 2000 graduate of Bethany College in Bethany, W.Va., where, as a player, she earned two honorable mentions for the All-America team. Scott was also twice named PAC Player of the Year and she earned first-team all-PAC honors all four years. Scott was inducted into the Bethany College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013. Scott, a native of nearby Struthers, Ohio, completed her master’s degree in counselor education at Westminster. She resides in New Wilmington.

Jayme Thiem enters her third year as an assistant coach for the Westminster women’s basketball team in 2013-14. A native of Cold Spring, Ky., Thiem spent two years as an assistant coach at Thomas More College, where she was a two-year All-American before graduating in December 2009. During Thiem’s two years as a player at Thomas More, the Saints compiled a 57-3 record and made two NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. A team captain in 2009, Thiem earned NCAA Division III All-America honors in 2008 and 2009 and she was the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Player of the Year in 2008. Prior to attending Thomas More, Thiem lettered two years at Division I Eastern Kentucky after graduating from Newport Central Catholic High School in 2005. estminster College has a proud athletics heritage that is steeped with a tradition of winning. Although the College was founded in 1852, varsity athletics at Westminster did not become prevalent until 1884. Beginning in 1926, the sports teams at Westminster became known as the “Titans,” after a The Original “Towering Titans” of 1926-27 sportswriter for the student newspaper, The Holcad, nicknamed the resurgent basketball team the “Towering Titans” because of younger, taller men that made up the starting lineup. The athletics program at Westminster became best known for the success of its football and men’s basketball teams. The Titan football team won six NAIA National Championships from 1970-94 and 71% (398-157-10) of its games since 1952. The men’s basketball team, honored by the Associated Press as the nation’s top small college team in 1962, was the all-time winningest NAIA team before Westminster joined the NCAA in 1998.

Dr. Richard H. Dorman Towering Titan Organization College President

Dr. Richard H. Dorman took office as the 14th President of Westminster College in 2008. President Dorman previously served as vice president for institutional advancement at Otterbein College since 1996. He served as assistant vice president for development (1994-96) and director of health sciences development at the University of Louisville (1990-94) following four years as an executive with the Penn State Alumni Association. A 1975 graduate of Susquehanna University, Dorman earned his master’s and his doctorate from Penn State University.

Jim Dafler

Director of Athletics Jim Dafler enters his 15th year as director of athletics at Westminster College in 2013-14. Dafler was selected as the chairman of the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Committee for the 2008-09 season, the final year of a four-year term as a committee member. Dafler was Westminster’s head men’s basketball coach from 1998-2003 after spending nine years as an assistant coach. He was also the Titans’ track and field coach for nine years. A 1971 graduate of Capital University, Dafler earned his master’s from Ohio University.

Providing support for Westminster’s athletic programs is the Towering Titan Organization (TTO), formed in 1976 around a core of devoted, loyal and intensely interested alumni, parents and friends. The organization purposes itself to help maintain, improve and endow Westminster College’s athletic programs. Over $3 million in gifts have been contributed to the Towering Titan Fund since its inception. The annual income is distributed in this manner: 90 percent of all donations go directly to the sport(s) chosen (donations can be designated to a specific sport for men or women), with 10 percent going towards the operation and promotion of the fund. All 20 varsity sports for men and women benefit from the fund. A minimum gift of $30 qualifies a donor for membership. Members receive a membership card and decal, issues of the Towering Titan Newsletter and invitations to social events such as golf outings each July, and recognition dinners and ceremonies that are scheduled periodically. Qualifying gifts are also recognized through membership in Westminster’s Giving Clubs. The PAC F

ounded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 select private institutions in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky, the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports (10 men, nine women).
