Future Titans,

2013 Titan Baseball

Thank you for your interest in Westminster College and the Titan Baseball program. I hope you find this guide beneficial as you learn about our team and the men who are enjoying their Titan Baseball experience. I am honored to take over as the head coach of the Titan Baseball team, after spending the past two seasons as the associate head coach and pithing coach. We start the season with one goal in mind, to bring an NCAA World Series Champoionship to Westminster. This starts first and foremost with a PAC Championship and a trip to the NCAA Regionals. We as coaches are also concerned with our players excelling in the classroom as well as on the field. What’s most important to us as coaches is preparing our players for success long after their baseball careers have ended. We are looking for skilled players to continue the success of our baseball team. I know that making your college choice is one of the most important decisions of your life. I would like to discuss with you the challenges and rewards of being a Titan baseball player.

2013TITANBASEBALL

The Westminster Titan baseball team will look to defend their Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) title in 2013. In 2012, Westminster posted a school-record 28 wins and earned its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. 2013 will begin the college head coaching career of Tim Mulligan. Mulligan, who was the team’s associate head coach and pitching coach the past two seasons, takes over for the 2012 PAC Coach of the Year, Carmen Nocera. Mulligan brings a new intensity to the head coaching role and a vast baseball knowledge that is matched by few. Coach Mulligan believes in discipline for his players and that preparation will be a key part in this team being successful. “The will to win is important, but the will to prepare is vital,” said Mulligan. “I expect us to make a run and compete, just like last year. I’ve never been satisfied coming in second and will prepare this team to be championship caliber.” The Titans lost four all-PAC performers including PAC Player of the Year, Tim Wiand. To replace a pitching staff that held the 27th best ERA in the nation, the Titans will turn to a new ace this year: junior lefty Ron Sullivan (Boardman, Ohio/Canfield). Sullivan was the team’s fourth starter last year and compiled a 4-1 record in eight appearances that included six starts and a 4.97 ERA. He was fourth on the team in innings pitched (41.2) and surrendered only 14 walks. His excellent control and ability to get batters out will prove to be successful attributes as he looks to take over as opening day starter.

Senior Captain Ty Robinson 2013TITANBASEBALL

Season Outlook

The Titans also return closer and top reliever senior Nick Grow (North East, Pa./North East). The lefty relief specialist, and one of the three team captains, led the team last year with 17 games pitched, 16 of which were out of the bullpen. Grow led the team with three saves and was tied for the best ERA posting a 1.91. Grow had the fifth-highest inning total with 28.1 IP and lowest opponent batting average at .178. Other returning players who look to step into the starting rotation will be junior RHP Scott Hanicak (Elwood City, Pa./ Laurel), senior RHP Andrew Wallen (Erie, Pa./Iroquois), and senior RHP Liam Halferty (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic). Hanicak had seven appearances last year including two starts, earning a 3-1 record in 19 innings pitched. He sported a 3.32 ERA last season while surrendering only eight walks. Wallen makes his return to the Westminster baseball team after taking a year off. Wallen has already made a positive impression on the new coaching staff being named a team captain for his strong leadership shown and dedication to making the team better as a whole. He has accumulated 17 appearances in his career, including four starts with 34.1 career innings pitched. Halferty has been a staple in the Titan bullpen for the past three years getting 30 appearances in his career, 27 of which were in relief. Halferty provides versatility to both start and relieve, sporting possibly the best change up on the team and movement on his pitches that will pose difficulty to opposing batters. He has 42.2 career innings pitched, accumulating a 4-6 career record and posted a career-high two starts last year. On the offensive side, the Titans will turn to senior captain OF Tyler Robinson (Creston, Ohio/Norwayne) who returns as the team’s main power threat. The three-year starter batted .300 last season with a team-high five home runs. His .492 slugging percentage was second-best on the team and batted in 16 runs. Seniors OF Kyle Allen (New Wilmington, Pa./West Middlesex) and SS/2B Ty Miller (Clinton, Pa./Hopewell) will look to make significant offensive contributions. Allen, who was named 2nd team all-PAC, was second on the team with a .359 batting average. He led the team in runs scored with 39, had a stellar .436 on base percentage, and collected 26 RBIs. Allen’s speed will be a huge asset as he was 13-15 on stolen base attempts last season and is 23-30 in his career. Miller, an all-PAC Honorable Mention last season, posted a .319 batting average and holds a .343 average for his career. That to go along with 48 career RBIs and five

Senior Captain Nick Grow

Junior RHP Scott Hanicak home runs. Miller’s bat has been a crucial part of the Titans’ success the past three years. Rounding out the positional players will be senior OF Eric Dunn (Freeport, Pa./Freeport), senior 3B Chris Ross (West Pittsburgh, Pa./New Castle), and junior 1B Nick Reinthaler (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield). Sophomore transfer Duncan Watt (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton), sophomore Jared Heck (Pittsburgh, Pa./ North Hills), and freshman Ryan Dunn (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) will all battle for middle infield positions. The biggest question mark this year for the Titans will be the catcher position. After losing both starting catchers from last season, the Titans will turn to sophomore Jake Haubrich (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) and senior Dom Neely (Prospect, Pa./Slippery Rock). Haubrich comes into the season slated to be the guy behind the plate on opening day. He served the team primarily as the bullpen catcher last season, but did see time in seven games. His time in the pen allowed him to gain a solid rapport with the pitching staff and a good feel for their pitches. WESTMINSTER.EDU/ATHLETICS

He knows the game and how to teach it with the best of them, and on top of that you can joke around with the guy. estminster College has a proud athletics heritage that is steeped with a tradition of winning. Although the College was founded in 1852, varsity athletics at Westminster did not become prevalent until 1884. Beginning in 1926, the sports teams at Westminster became known as the “Titans,” after a The Original “Towering Titans” of 1926-27 sportswriter for the student newspaper, The Holcad, nicknamed the resurgent basketball team the “Towering Titans” because of younger, taller men that made up the starting lineup. The athletics program at Westminster became best known for the success of its football and men’s basketball teams. The Titan football team won six NAIA National Championships from 1970-94 and 71% (398-157-10) of its games since 1952. The men’s basketball team, honored by the Associated Press as the nation’s top small college team in 1962, was the all-time winningest NAIA team before Westminster joined the NCAA in 1998.

Baseball Field

L

ocated adjacent to Memorial Field House and Burry Stadium, the Westminster baseball diamond has been the home of the Titans throughout the program’s history. The field’s unusual dimensions are 370 feet down the right field line, 360 feet to center field, and 340 feet down the left field line. The field’s signature feature is in left field, as home runs routinely find their way into Brittain Lake. The field underwent extensive renovations in 2004, including the addition of new dugouts, bullpen areas, a new backstop and completion of the right field fence.

The PAC F

ounded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 select private institutions in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky, the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports (10 men, nine women).
