Thank you for your interest in Westminster College and our Titan football team. I hope that you will find the 2012 Titan Football Guide beneficial as you learn about our team and the young men who play a vital part in continuing what is known as the “Titan Tradition.” As a coaching staff, we challenge our men to focus on our vision, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship, while also stressing our mission: “To each a meaningful degree, to all an education.” The backbone of our program at Westminster is our values that foster accountability in the lives of our young men as we recognize and respect the worth and leadership of each person. We are dedicated to building a TEAM that functions as one. The names and faces that appear in this guide have learned the value of a Westminster education and what it means to be a Titan. We hope to provide these opportunities to others who accept the challenge.

T

he 2012 Westminster College football team looks to repeat last year’s start, but demonstrate a stronger finish to the season. Last season, Westminster won five of its first seven games, but lost their final three contests. The Titans, under the guidance of eight-year head coach Jeff Hand, will rely on 15 returning starters (8 offense, 7 defense) to carry this year’s squad. Westminster lost eight starters, seven of them seniors, from the 2011 team that posted a 5-5 record and fifth-place finish of 4-4 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC). The four conference wins tied the 2002 Westminster team for most wins since the Titans joined the PAC in 2000. In 2011, Westminster made strides to compete against the top schools in the conference. The Titans lost in a nail biter, 20-16, to Washington & Jefferson, for the closest margin of a Westminster-W&J game since 2000 when the Titans beat the Presidents, 19-17. “Our expectation for the 2012 season is to build on the improvement from the 2011 season,” Hand said. “The expectation is simply to improve daily to reach our full potential on the field and to compete fiercely throughout our challenging schedule.”

OFFENSE The Titans have their leading receiver and rusher back for the 2012 season. First Team All-PAC senior Geno Pasquinelli (Salem, OH / Salem) is on the brink of breaking two school records. Pasquinelli’s 110 receptions are only 33 receptions behind the number one spot, while his 16 touchdowns are only 14 behind. He had career-highs in 2011 in receptions (51), yards (579), and touchdowns (9). “We will lean on our only First Team all-PAC performer, Pasquinelli, to lead on and off the field,” Hand said. Senior running back John Proano (Titusville, PA / Titusville) has led the offense in rushing the past two seasons with most recently compiling 364 yards on 120 attempts with four touchdowns in 2011. The Titans have high hopes for the offensive line which has four of the five starters returning. “Although undersized, we feel we have the best returning ‘group’ of offensive lineman in many years,” Hand said. Also looking to make an impact are senior tight end David Wright (Solon, OH / Solon) and junior wide receiver Collin Wallace (Mechanicsburg, PA / Cumberland Valley). The biggest loss for Westminster from a year ago is two-year starter Shawn Lehocky (Conway, PA / Freedom) due to graduation. Lehocky, the PAC’s sixth ranked passer a year ago and who is ranked sixth in career passing yards (3,984) and eighth in career passing touchdowns (32) in school history, will be missed and the Titan’s will rely on their

2012 Season Outlook 2011 Team Stats

only returning quarterback, junior Tommy Turnbull (Pittsburgh, PA / Avonworth). “Naturally with only one returning quarterback with gametime experience, eyes will be focused on his [Turnbull’s] improvement as a player as well as his leadership development”, added Hand. “The majority of the players that carried and received the ball for us in 2011 return and we will look to them to provide sparks offensively.”

DEFENSE Leading the Titan defense are two seniors, all-PAC linebacker Aaron Nauer (Pittsburgh, PA / Shaler) and all-PAC defensive back Kyle

Allen (New Wilmington, Pa./West Middlesex). Nauer was second on the team and tied for 10th in the PAC with 4.5 sacks and first on the team and tied for fourth in the PAC with 14 tackles for loss a year ago. Allen led the Titans and was fifth in the league with four interceptions in 2011. The defense has seven of their top 10 tacklers returning from last year, including their top four. Leading the way is junior linebacker Nate Moot (Johnstown, PA / Bishop McCort) who recorded 76 total tackles last year, which tied for seventh in the PAC. Senior linebacker Derrick Orloski (Butler, PA / Slippery Rock) is right behind with 73 tackles in 2011, which tied for ninth in the conference. All-PAC senior linebacker Alex Kernicky (Greensburg, PA / Greater Latrobe) and senior defensive back J.J. Nalesnik (Darlington, PA / Blackhawk) also look to make an impact as upperclassmen leaders. “The 2012 Titans need to continue to improve in the take away column and rushing defense,” said Hand. “Additionally, continuing to play stingy defense on third down and in the red zone will lead a better over scoring defensive average. We also have another handful of very impactful players defensively that will help our TEAM defensive concept. “

SPECIAL TEAMS

In 2012, Westminster will not have all-PAC honorees punter Andrew Clark (Titusville, Pa./Titusville) and kicker Zac Henry (North East, Pa./North East), the Titans will look to the newcomers to compete for those positions. Two-time all-PAC Kyle Allen, who led the team in 2011 with 282 yards (14.8 avg.) in kickoff returns, is back as the main returner.

Spring Practices...

NCAA rules prevent Division III schools like Westminster from having full-contact practices during the offseason, but the offseason is something the Titans take seriously. In addition to sessions in the weight room, the team has 16 on-field practices during the spring. Players also challenge one another with offseason weightlifting competitions by their positions.

Providing support for Westminster’s athletic programs is the Towering Titan Organization (TTO), formed in 1976 around a core of devoted, loyal and intensely interested alumni, parents and friends. The organization purposes itself to help maintain, improve and endow Westminster College’s athletic programs. Over $3 million in gifts have been contributed to the Towering Titan Fund since its inception. The annual income is distributed in this manner: 90 percent of all donations go directly to the sport(s) chosen (donations can be designated to a specific sport for men or women), with 10 percent going towards the operation and promotion of the fund. All 20 varsity sports for men and women benefit from the fund. A minimum gift of $30 qualifies a donor for membership. Members receive a membership card and decal, issues of the Towering Titan Newsletter and invitations to social events such as golf outings each July, and recognition dinners and ceremonies that are scheduled periodically. Qualifying gifts are also recognized through membership in Westminster’s Giving Clubs. Harold Burry Stadium

T Jerry C. Neff Entranceway

Joseph B. Fusco Plaza

he most significant renovation project in the 61-year history of Memorial Field took place in 2008 with the installation of synthetic FieldTurf and lighting as part of a $1.7 million project that included the Joseph B. Fusco Plaza and the Jerry C. Neff Entranceway. Directly adjacent to the Field House and sitting just north of Brittain Lake on the Westminster campus, the 3,000-seat facility has been the home of six national championship teams and was the site of the 1988 NAIA Division II National Championship game, won by the Titans over Wisconsin-LaCrosse, 21-14. In 1997, the entire complex was dedicated and named in honor of the late College Football Hall of Famer Dr. Harold Burry ’35, who served as head football coach from 1952-71 with a career record of 127-31-5. The stadium underwent a renovation in 1997, as a donation by Westminster trustee Jim Dewar and his family resulted in the refurbishment of the bleachers and construction of a new press box. A new track was installed in 2001 through a gift from the Hoyt Foundation in New Castle. In 2005, a new scoreboard was installed and a year later a new sound system was updated. W

estminster College has a proud athletics heritage that is steeped with a tradition of winning. Although the College was founded in 1852, varsity athletics at Westminster did not become prevalent until 1884. Beginning in 1926, the sports teams at Westminster became known as the “Titans,” after a The Original “Towering Titans” of 1926-27 sportswriter for the student newspaper, The Holcad, nicknamed the resurgent basketball team the “Towering Titans” because of younger, taller men that made up the starting lineup. The athletics program at Westminster became best known for the success of its football and men’s basketball teams. The Titan football team won six NAIA National Championships from 1970-94 and 71% (398-157-10) of its games since 1952. The men’s basketball team, honored by the Associated Press as the nation’s top small college team in 1962, was the all-time winningest NAIA team before Westminster joined the NCAA in 1998.

The PAC

F

ounded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 select private institutions in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky, the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports (10 men, nine women).
