Greetings,

2012-13 Titan Golf

Thank you for your interest in Westminster College and our Titan men’s and women’s programs. We hope that you will find the 2012-13 Titan Golf Guide beneficial as you learn about our team and the young men and women who are enjoying their experience at Westminster. Much like the way qualified Westminster students are challenged to earn an education on our beautiful campus, members of the Titan golf teams benefit by playing on some of the area’s most beautiful and challenging golf courses. At Westminster, we take pride in calling the New Castle Country Club our home course. The course was designed by renowned architect A.W. Tillinghast, who designed several courses that hosted PGA Championships and U.S. Opens. Westminster golfers also travel during spring break. In 2012, our men’s and women’s teams spent a week in North Myrtle Beach, S.C., where we competed against other schools at the Barefoot Resort & Golf Course. As coaches we are eager to challenge more qualified individuals to contribute to our teams and strive for excellence both on the golf course and in the classroom.

Gene Nicholson Men’s Coach 724-946-7308 nicholbe@westminster.edu

Coaches

Veteran coach Gene Nicholson begins his 13th season at the helm of the Westminster College men’s golf program for the 2012-13 season. Under Nicholson, Westminster has placed at least in the top three in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) for six out of the last 10 seasons. A three-time PAC Coach of the Year, Nicholson guided the Titans to three straight league titles from 2003-05, a second-place finish in 2006 and thirdplace finishes in 2008 and 2009. The 2004-05 season was perhaps Nicholson’s best year as the Titan golf coach as Westminster captured five invitational titles, including its third straight PAC championship. Westminster then earned its first-ever berth in the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships, finishing in a tie for 16th place in a 23-

team national field. Nicholson is best known as the former head football coach at Westminster from 1991-98. During that time, he led the Titan football program to a record of 64-25-2 (.714) in eight seasons, including posting an undefeated regular season in 1992 and capturing the school’s record-sixth NAIA Division II national championship in 1994. Prior to becoming head coach in 1991, Nicholson spent the previous 22 seasons (1969-90) as the Titans’ defensive coordinator. Collectively, Nicholson coached in nine national championship games. For his coaching accomplishments, Nicholson was voted NAIA Division II National Coach of the Year by American Football Quarterly and Rawling’s in 1994. He is also an inductee in the Titan Sports Hall of Fame. In addition to football, Nicholson also served as – at one time or another – the head coach for swimming, tennis, wrestling, and track and field coach during his 42 years at Westminster. Nicholson is a 1964 graduate of Slippery Rock University, where he was a standout lineman and also a member of the track team. In 2007, he retired after 38 years of service as a full-time faculty member at Westminster College as a professor of physical education. He and his wife, Barbara, reside in New Wilmington.

Jeff Roud Women’s Coach 724-946-6164 roudaj@westminster.edu

Jeff Roud begins his first year as the head women’s golf coach in 2012. Roud previously served as a volunteer assistant the last eight years with his wife Debi Roud, who was the pioneer coach of the program and a three-time Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Women’s Golf Coach of the Year. Roud helped guide Westminster to its third PAC women’s golf crown in 2012 and first since 2005. Roud has won local and regional ESPN national golf challenges and in 2010 he qualified and competed in a national championship in Las Vegas. He has volunteered at First Tee in Canton, OH and has worked at the Schorsten Memorial Golf Tournament. A 1966 graduate of Mount Union, Roud was a three-time all-OAC honoree in track & field and a conference and all-Ohio champion in the 120-meters hurdles. He also placed second in regionals and fifth in nationals and holds the school-record time of 14.2. Roud earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration with minors in English and geology from Mount Union.

New Castle Country Club L

ocated in New Castle, Pa., less than five miles from the Westminster campus, New Castle Country Club has been the home course for the Titan men’s golf team since the 1940s. The course was designed by A.W. Tillinghast, whose work includes courses such as Winged Foot, Bethpage, and several other courses that have hosted U.S. Opens, PGA Championships, and Ryder Cups. In July 2007, Sports Illustrated and Golf.com columnist John Garrity included the New Castle Country Club on his Top 50 Courses in the World. Each year, Westminster hosts two men’s events, one in the fall and one in the spring, and one women’s event in the spring, the Mary Louise Cleland Eckles Invitational, named for the woman who broke the golf gender barrier at Westminster by playing for the men’s team in the late 1940s. The course was also the site of the 1995 and 1998 NAIA Northeast Regional Tournaments. The course is a par-72, 6,900-yard layout.

The PAC F

ounded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 select private institutions in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky, the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports (10 men, nine women).

estminster College has a proud athletics heritage that is steeped with a tradition of winning. Although the College was founded in 1852, varsity athletics at Westminster did not become prevalent until 1884. Beginning in 1926, the sports teams at Westminster became known as the “Titans,” after a The Original “Towering Titans” of 1926-27 sportswriter for the student newspaper, The Holcad, nicknamed the resurgent basketball team the “Towering Titans” because of younger, taller men that made up the starting lineup. The athletics program at Westminster became best known for the success of its football and men’s basketball teams. The Titan football team won six NAIA National Championships from 1970-94 and 71% (398-157-10) of its games since 1952. The men’s basketball team, honored by the Associated Press as the nation’s top small college team in 1962, was the all-time winningest NAIA team before Westminster joined the NCAA in 1998.

Left to right: Kristin Zukowski, the 1991 NAIA champion in the 100-yard butterfly; Phil Rice, Westminster’s first-ever All-American in 1932; Harold Davis, a College Football Hall of Fame inductee in 2004 who was the football team’s only three-time, first-team All-American from 1954-56.
