Thank you for your interest in Westminster College and our men’s basketball team. I hope the information in the following pages is informational and educates you on the great tradition that is Westminster Basketball. For over 90 years our great basketball tradition has been built and held together by great student-athletes. As not only the coach of the Titans, but also as a former Titan player, I am more than interested in finding young men who want to be part of something bigger than themselves and build on our many successes. I want my players to work as a family, that’s the Titan tradition. Having a family atmosphere that includes alumni and past players coming to the games and being part of the program is important to me. The players, teams, and coaches in the following pages have not only had great success on the court as you will see but also off the court in the most important game that follows... LIFE. he 2012-13 Westminster College men’s basketball team returns all five starters and three key reserve players for first-year head coach Kevin Siroki. Siroki, a ‘93 Westminster graduate and Titan standout, knows first-hand what the Titan tradition is all about. “I want my players to work as a family,” Siroki said. “That’s the Titan tradition. Having a family atmosphere that includes alumni and past players coming to the games and being part of the program is important to me.” The Titans will look to two-year starters senior guard Doug Smith (South Park, PA/South Park) and junior guard Anthony Thomas (New Castle, PA/Union) to lead the offense. Season Outlook
Smith led the team in scoring, averaging 13.7 points per game, while Thomas averaged 13.3. Senior forward Adam Carswell (Painsville, OH/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) returns for his final season after he led the team in minutes (31.6/game), starts (26), rebounds (6.4/game), blocks (25), and field goal percentage a season ago. Carswell’s .571 field goal percentage was third in the PAC. The other two returning starters include senior guard Ron Martino (Youngstown, OH/ Cardinal Mooney), who averaged 9.7 points and 1.9 assists per game, and sophomore guard Ben Donlow (Poland, OH/Poland Seminary), who contributed 10.3 points and 5.4 rebounds per contest. Key reserves for the Titans will include senior guard Reuben King (New Kensington, PA/ Highlands), junior guard Kendall Hunter (McKeesport, PA/ McKeesport), and sophomore center Mark Hockenberry (Hanover, PA/South Western).

Westminster College named Kevin Siroki (‘93) its new head men’s basketball coach with an official start date of May 21, 2012. Siroki previously was the athletic director and the head men’s basketball coach at Galen University in Belize, Central America. Siroki, the team MVP as a senior and three-time letterwinner at point guard for the Titans in 199093, guided Westminster to a 58-29 record during his four years as an undergraduate. “It’s a dream come true, really,” said Siroki. “There have been a lot of great coaches before me. I want my players to work as a family, that’s the Titan tradition. Having a family atmosphere that includes alumni and past players coming to the games and being part of the program is important to
me.” Siroki will bring a wealth of experience from the national level as well as the collegiate arena. Siroki has earned multiple championships and awards in professional international basketball, as a player and as a coach, over the past 10 years. Prior, Siroki was the assistant men’s basketball coach at Tiffin University (00-01) and Westminster (1998-2000). “I am very pleased and excited that Kevin has accepted our offer to be the next men’s basketball coach at Westminster,” said the school’s athletic director Jim Dafler. “Everyone who knows Kevin knows of his tireless energy, his enthusiasm and positive attitude, his passion for competition, and his love for Titan basketball. I am confident the student-athletes he coaches will come to display most, if not all, of these same characteristics.” “I will bring passion and enthusiasm for the game to Westminster,” Siroki added. “My coaching philosophy is based on the mentality of ‘Play hard, smart, and together.’ I’m ready to get to work.”

Bob Kerr enters his eighth season as assistant coach for the Westminster men’s basketball team in 2012-13. Kerr is a former high school basketball coach in the area who is a native of New Castle. Kerr came to Westminster after serving as head boys basketball coach and assistant athletic director/facilities director at Ellwood City Lincoln High School from 2001-04. Prior to that, he was an assistant boys basketball coach and assistant athletic director/facilities director at New Castle High School from 1994-2001. A 1994 graduate of Slippery Rock University majoring in sports management with a minor in public relations, Kerr also worked for the NFL’s Los Angeles Raiders from 1991-93.

estminster College began playing basketball in 1897, but managed only a 109-135 record until John Lawther took over in 1926 and began to lay the groundwork for more than six decades of winning hoops. Lawther coached through the 1935-36 season, stepping down from the helm with a career record of 164-44, including a 37-33 win over St. John’s in the first collegiate doubleheader played at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 29, 1934. George Roark then stepped in for a season and led the TiBuzz Ridl, Stan Wasik, Joe Spak, Lee Fox and Dale Dunmire made up the starting tans to a 14-7 campaign before five that led Westminster to a 20-2 record and its only appearance in the NIT. the next great Westminster mentor, Grover Washabaugh, signed on for a 19-season stint. Under his guidance, Titan basketball continued to flourish, compiling a 297-129 record. The team even earned an invitation to the NIT in 1941, where it put up quite a scrap before succumbing to Clair Bee’s Long Island University team, 48-36. The captain of that NIT team, C.G. “Buzz” Ridl, succeeded Washabaugh as coach in 1956 and, like his two predecessors, kept Titan basketball near the top of the small-college heap. Ridl’s Titans posted a 216-91 record, advancing twice to the NAIA championship game, and twice to the semifinals. Overall, Ridl, who was selected as one of five coaches on the NAIA Golden Anniversary All-Star basketball team in 1986, took his team to the national tournament six times. And, in 1962, Ridl saw his Titans honored by both wire services as the nation’s top small-college basketball team. In 1968, however, Ridl moved on to the University of Pittsburgh and a two-time All-American from Ridl’s ‘62 squad, C. Ronald Galbreath, took over the reins. Initially, Galbreath coached for only one season before moving on to Clarion for five years, but he returned again in 1974. In the 1996-97 season, Galbreath posted his 500th career victory, becoming just the 36th active coach at that time at any level to reach that mark. Counting his five seasons at Clarion, he concluded his Titan men’s basketball coaching career with 523 career wins, and is the all-time leader in wins at Westminster with 448. When Westminster left the NAIA in 1998 the Titans were the all-time winningest basketball program in the NAIA with All-American Chuck Davis (right) steals the ball 1,299 wins. Now, in NCAA Division III the Titans expect to confrom Pitt’s two-time All-American Don Hennon in tinue to record victories to remain one of the winningest college the Titans’ 76-66 win over the Panthers in 1958. basketball programs in any division or at any level in the nation.

estminster College has a proud athletics heritage that is steeped with a tradition of winning. Although the College was founded in 1852, varsity athletics at Westminster did not become prevalent until 1884. Beginning in 1926, the sports teams at Westminster became known as the “Titans,” after a The Original “Towering Titans” of 1926-27 sportswriter for the student newspaper, The Holcad, nicknamed the resurgent basketball team the “Towering Titans” because of younger, taller men that made up the starting lineup. The athletics program at Westminster became best known for the success of its football and men’s basketball teams. The Titan football team won six NAIA National Championships from 1970-94 and 71% (398-157-10) of its games since 1952. The men’s basketball team, honored by the Associated Press as the nation’s top small college team in 1962, was the all-time winningest NAIA team before Westminster joined the NCAA in 1998.

n the 2011-12 academic year there were 424 varsity athletes at Westminster, including 45 multi-sport athletes. There are currently 20 varsity sports teams at Westminster that compete in Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) and NCAA Division III. In the last eight years, 11 Westminster teams have either qualified for the NCAA Tournament or sent athletes to the NCAA Championship meet. Westminster joined the NCAA Division III and the PAC in 2000-01 and became eligible for championships and awards in 2002-03. er

estminster student-athletes enjoy access to outstanding athletics facilities on campus. With the exception of the golf teams, all of the Titans compete and practice on campus in one centralized location. Each team has access to its own locker room in the Memorial Field House, which is also a short walking distance to all venues.

Dr. Richard H. Dorman Towering Titan Organization College President
Dr. Richard H. Dorman took office as the 14th President of Westminster College in 2008. President Dorman previously served as vice president for institutional advancement at Otterbein College since 1996. He served as assistant vice president for development (1994-96) and director of health sciences development at the University of Louisville (1990-94) following four years as an executive with the Penn State Alumni Association. A 1975 graduate of Susquehanna University, Dorman earned his master’s and his doctorate from Penn State University.
Jim Dafler
Director of Athletics Jim Dafler enters his 14th year as director of athletics at Westminster College in 2012-13. Dafler was selected as the chairman of the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Committee for the 2008-09 season, the final year of a four-year term as a committee member. Dafler was Westminster’s head men’s basketball coach from 1998-2003 after spending nine years as an assistant coach. He was also the Titans’ track and field coach for nine years. A 1971 graduate of Capital University, Dafler earned his master’s from Ohio University.
Providing support for Westminster’s athletic programs is the Towering Titan Organization (TTO), formed in 1976 around a core of devoted, loyal and intensely interested alumni, parents and friends. The organization purposes itself to help maintain, improve and endow Westminster College’s athletic programs. Over $3 million in gifts have been contributed to the Towering Titan Fund since its inception. The annual income is distributed in this manner: 90 percent of all donations go directly to the sport(s) chosen (donations can be designated to a specific sport for men or women), with 10 percent going towards the operation and promotion of the fund. All 20 varsity sports for men and women benefit from the fund. A minimum gift of $30 qualifies a donor for membership. Members receive a membership card and decal, issues of the Towering Titan Newsletter and invitations to social events such as golf outings each July, and recognition dinners and ceremonies that are scheduled periodically. Qualifying gifts are also recognized through membership in Westminster’s Giving Clubs. The PAC F
ounded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 select private institutions in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky, the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports (10 men, nine women).
