Greetings,

2013 Titan Softball

Thank you for your interest in Westminster College and the Titan softball program. I hope you find this guide beneficial as you learn about our team and the young ladies who are enjoying their Westminster experience. Our goal each and every year is to not only win a conference championship, but also to remain one of the top small school softball programs in the region. We continue to do this while maintaining the academic integrity of Westminster. As our alumni will attest, the people you are learning about through this guide are not only members of a team, but that of a family. This is a family who creates teamwork and friendships that will last a lifetime. At Westminster College, we are continually looking for qualified individuals to contribute to the success of our team. As a coach, I know that making your college choice is one of the most important decisions of your life. I would like to discuss with you the challenges and rewards of being a Titan.

he 2013 Westminster College softball team will look to post a winning record for the ninth time in the last 10 years. The Titans compiled a 22-19 record, including an 11-7 mark for third place in the President’s Athletic Conference (PAC), in 2012. The Titans led the conference in sacrifice hits (46), assists 389) and double plays turned (20). Since the PAC started taking only the top four teams for its championship tournament in 2006, the Titans have qualified six of the last seven years. Having only graduated two players from the 2012 squad, the Titans look to experience and leadership to bring them back to the playoffs. Those returning include four all-PAC players from a year ago. Seniors Chelsea Brown (New Castle, Pa/Mohawk), Layne Carpenter (Marietta, Oh/Marietta), and Katie Hughes (Boardman, Oh/Cardinal Mooney) and junior Kelsey Squelch (Pittsburgh, Pa/Perry Traditional). Brown led the team on the mound and was second in the conference with a career-best 16 wins. Hughes was an all-Region player as a designator hitter in 2011 before switching roles to

become the Titans’ all-PAC shortstop in 2012. Carpenter was a first-team all-PAC selection as a designated hitter while second baseman Squelch led the Titans with a .350 batting percentage and her team-leading 50 hits and 30 runs scored placed her in the top-5 in the PAC. Other returning starters include seniors Brittany Gamble (Poland, Oh/ Poland Seminary) and Olet Stasko (McDonald, Pa/West Allegheny). Gamble is a 2010 all-PAC outfielder while Stasko moved from outfield to fill the role of starting catcher last season for the Titans. Juniors first baseman Lauren Stoczynski (Erie, Pa/Harbor Creek) and outfielders Katy Balko (New Stanton, Pa/Hempfield) and Erika Pamer (Beaver Falls, Pa/ Beaver Falls) complete the list of returning starters. Junior Tricia Johnston (Tionesta, Pa/West Forest), sophomore pitcher Carly Leffakis (Pittsburgh, Pa/ North Catholic) and a talented class of eight freshmen complete the Titan team. When an experienced group such as this returns, veteran head coach Jan Reddinger should expect good things. “I always have high expectations,” said Reddinger, who enters her 17th year at Westminster. “If we lacked anything last year, it would have been inexperience and depth. Having these returning players mixed in with a talented group of freshmen, this certainly is no longer the case.”

The PAC F

ounded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 select private institutions in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky, the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports (10 men, nine women).

estminster College has a proud athletics heritage that is steeped with a tradition of winning. Although the College was founded in 1852, varsity athletics at Westminster did not become prevalent until 1884. Beginning in 1926, the sports teams at Westminster became known as the “Titans,” after a The Original “Towering Titans” of 1926-27 sportswriter for the student newspaper, The Holcad, nicknamed the resurgent basketball team the “Towering Titans” because of younger, taller men that made up the starting lineup. The athletics program at Westminster became best known for the success of its football and men’s basketball teams. The Titan football team won six NAIA National Championships from 1970-94 and 71% (398-157-10) of its games since 1952. The men’s basketball team, honored by the Associated Press as the nation’s top small college team in 1962, was the all-time winningest NAIA team before Westminster joined the NCAA in 1998.

n the 2011-12 academic year there were 424 varsity athletes at Westminster, including 45 multi-sport athletes. There are currently 20 varsity sports teams at Westminster that compete in Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) and NCAA Division III. In the last eight years, 11 Westminster teams have either qualified for the NCAA Tournament or sent athletes to the NCAA Championship meet. Westminster joined the NCAA Division III and the PAC in 2000-01 and became eligible for championships and awards in 2002-03.
