2012-13 Titan Tennis

Thank you for your interest in Westminster College and our Titan Tennis Program. I am very proud and excited about the quality of the young men and women participating in the program and am hopeful the Tennis media guide will provide information to expand your interest to learn more about Westminster College and Titan Tennis. Since becoming the coach of both teams, our top priority has been to establish one unified program with both teams working together as one. To that end, we have been successful! The players work together on many projects and fully support each other, and both teams enjoy their Spring Break trip to Hilton Head Island, S.C., where each squad plays three matches.

Additionally, I should highlight that our studentathletes are challenged on three fronts: 1.) To diligently work with and utilize our wonderful faculty to reach out and grow academically. Many of our tennis players and teams have been recognized nationally as Scholar-Athletes by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) and the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. 2.) To continually push themselves to become the very best players they can be. 3.) To involve themselves in many of the social and philanthropic opportunities available at Westminster College.

he Westminster men’s tennis team posted a 5-10 record, including 5-2 in Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) matches during the 2011-12 season. The Titans placed third out of eight teams at the PAC Championships. Westminster returns eight players from last year’s team including six of the team’s seven lettermen. “Our expectations this year are to get better,” said veteran head coach Scott Renninger. “It’s all about your recruiting and how your kids perform. I know our kids have been playing a lot of tennis over the summer and hopefully they’ll be able to continue through the fall and into the winter. It’s a matter of how quickly we can regenerate our skills.” Junior Ryan Carr (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Cheektowaga Central), who had the best singles record of 10-7 last season, was the furthest advancing Titan at the PAC Championships. Carr was the runner-up at no. 5 singles earning him all-PAC second team honors for the second time of his career. All-PAC honorable mention honorees sophomore Mike Matisi (Lowellville, OH / Lowellville) at no. 4 singles and senior Marshall Finelli (Girard, OH / Ursuline) at no. 6 singles look to repeat last year’s success. Matisi had an impressive fresh-

man campaign with a 9-4 record, which ranked second best on the team. Carr and Finelli also placed third at the PAC Championships at no. 3 doubles. The duo led Westminster with seven doubles wins (7-8 overall). Matisi and senior three-year starter Sean Black (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) are back after they logged a 5-3 doubles record and placed third at no. 2 doubles at the PAC Championships. Junior Nathan Huber (Highland, Md./River Hill) has no. 1 singles experience and senior Brad Thomas (Warren, Ohio/Champion), a three-year letterman and a four-year starter, also provides leadership on the court. “Obviously, you are hopeful of your seniors,” said Renninger. “We have to have Black and Thomas step up and Finelli step into the leadership role. As for the underclassmen, we hope Andino comes back very strong and Matisi had a very solid freshman year. Also, Carr had a good freshman and sophomore year and hopefully he will continue to mature as a player and have another good year.” Newcomers Ethan McCarthy (New Castle, PA / Neshannock) and Troy Abbot (Seven Fields, PA / Seneca Valley) look to make an impact in their first year.

estminster (18-0, 9-0 PAC in 2011) broke the school record for wins in a season a year ago and will be vying for their first PAC championship in 2012. “Last year has nothing to do with this year,” said veteran head coach Scott Renninger. “It’s a special thing that it was the first undefeated women’s team in school history, but we can’t build from last year. The one thing that we can take from last year is the fact that we can win.” Senior Alex Bailey (Murrysville, PA / Franklin Regional), the defending PAC champion at no. 2 singles, is back for her final year. Bailey has a 25-match winning streak dating back two years ago. “Alex loves to compete,” said Renninger. “This is something that has been probably instilled by her father Bill Bailey ‘86 (who holds school records in singles wins for a season and career singles and doubles victories).” Bailey will be competing against junior Caitlin Hosler (Lititz, PA / Manheim Central) for the no. 1 singles

spot this year. The duo was 20-1 last year at no. 1 doubles. Also looking to compete is senior Jane Larson (Warren, PA / Warren) who is a three-year starter at the no. 3 singles. “I expect a highly productive season from Jane this year, no doubt about that,” said Renninger. Junior Heather Santa (Butler, PA / Butler), a two-year letter winner, will most likely position at the no. 4 singles. “There’s a quote that I tell my players to save somewhere,” said Renninger. “Yesterday is history, learn from it. Tomorrow is a mystery, prepare for it. Today is the greatest gift of all. Be excited and live it to the fullest. We just prepare today to be the best tomorrow. They have been working hard this offseason with blisters on their hands and sore muscles to show for it, but they haven’t relented. They’re putting the time and effort in and sometimes it’s tough but hopefully that toughness comes out on the court too.”

The 2012-13 academic year marks Renninger’s 14th year as head coach of the men’s tennis team and his eighth as head coach of the women’s squad. He owns a 71-124 (.364) record as men’s coach and 85-40 (.680) mark as women’s coach. Renninger, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year for three straight years from 2006-08, led the Titan women to runner-up finishes at the PAC Championships in each of the last six seasons, including the 2011-12 team that set the school record for wins in a season with a perfect 18-0 record. As the Titan men’s coach, Renninger led the team to an improvement in wins in each of his first three seasons including the 2002 team that went 10-6, a win total that was duplicated by the 2004 team that went 10-9. A 1966 graduate of Heidelberg, Renninger and his wife, Phyllis, live in New Wilmington. They have three children: Angie (a 1997 Westminster graduate), Scooter, and T.J. (a 2008 Westminster graduate).

The PAC F

ounded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 select private institutions in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky, the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports (10 men, nine women).

estminster College has a proud athletics heritage that is steeped with a tradition of winning. Although the College was founded in 1852, varsity athletics at Westminster did not become prevalent until 1884. Beginning in 1926, the sports teams at Westminster became known as the “Titans,” after a The Original “Towering Titans” of 1926-27 sportswriter for the student newspaper, The Holcad, nicknamed the resurgent basketball team the “Towering Titans” because of younger, taller men that made up the starting lineup. The athletics program at Westminster became best known for the success of its football and men’s basketball teams. The Titan football team won six NAIA National Championships from 1970-94 and 71% (398-157-10) of its games since 1952. The men’s basketball team, honored by the Associated Press as the nation’s top small college team in 1962, was the all-time winningest NAIA team before Westminster joined the NCAA in 1998.
