2012-13 Titan Tennis

Greetings, Thank you for your interest in Westminster College and our Titan tennis program. I hope that you will find the 2013-14 Titan Tennis Guide beneficial as you learn about our team and the young men and women who are enjoying their experience at Westminster.

Since I took over the women’s tennis program eight years ago and became head coach of both the men’s and women’s teams, my goal has been to have the programs work together and function as one. One thing that has helped us achieve this is our annual spring trip to Hilton Head Island, S.C. Our team members are thriving as students and as athletes. Last year, seven of our studentathletes were recognized on the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Academic Honor Roll (3.6 gpa or higher). Over the past four years on the court, the women have won 90% (64-7) of their overall matches and 91% (32-3) of their conference matches. Last year, the women won its first PAC Tournament title in school history. As a coach I am pleased with the results but never satisfied. At Westminster we are eager to challenge highly qualified individuals to work hard and contribute to our teams’ successes. Additionally, I should highlight that our student-athletes are challenged on four fronts: 1.) To diligently work with and utilize our wonderful faculty to reach out and grow academically. Many of our tennis players and teams have been recognized nationally as Scholar-Athletes by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) and the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. 2.) To continually push themselves to become the very best players they can be. 3.) To involve themselves in many of the social and philanthropic opportunities available at Westminster College. 4.) To play by “The Standard.” (see pg. 6).

he Westminster College women’s and men’s tennis teams are set for the 2013-14 season and aim to make their presence felt in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC). “All of those PAC matches in the regular season have great implications on where you seed,” veteran head coach Scott Renninger said. “You don’t want to be any worse than the no.1 or no. 2 seed, if you could avoid it.” The women’s team is coming off its best season in school history that included its first-ever PAC championship, a title it shared with Saint Vincent. The Titans posted an overall record of 17-1 and was 8-1 in the conference during the regular season. “Our goal is to be the best we can be, period,” Renninger said. “Repeat is not important. What we do now is important.” The Titan women return three letterwinners and lose the same. Three-year letterman and three-time PAC champion senior Caitlin

Hosler is expected to play at no. 1 singles. A two-time PAC champion at no. 2 singles, Hosler does have experience playing at no.1 as she is 15-8 for her career. Hosler currently ranks fifth all-time in singles (51) and third in doubles (59) wins. Senior Heather Santa and junior Lauren Fling also return for the Titans. Santa, the no. 4 singles 2012 PAC Champion, has teamed up with Fling the past two years at doubles with an overall record of 32-10 and will compete together this year at no. 2. Westminster loses singles spots at no. 1, no. 3, no. 6, and no. 7 due to graduation;

most notably are Alex Bailey (no. 1) and Jane Larson (no. 3). Bailey is first all-time in school history in singles (69) and doubles (71) wins, while Larson ranks third in singles (55) and second in doubles (65). “Obviously, we have a tremendous amount of work to do to find out who’s going to step up and fill in those spots,” Renninger added. “We told our recruits this year that you are going to have an opportunity to step in and they are going to have to step in quickly.” The men’s team returns four lettermen, while losing three. At singles, junior Mike Matisi at no. 4, who led the Titans last year in singles wins with 11, and senior Ryan Carr at no. 5

This was Matisi’s second conference honorable mention nod and the third all-conference accolade for Carr, as he earned second team honors during his freshman and sophomore year. Matisi and Carr also earned All-PAC honorable mention at no. 2 and no. 3 doubles, respectively. Sophomore Troy Abbot and junior Mark Andino round out the returning lettermen for Westminster. Last season, Abbot played at no. 1 singles, while Andino played at no. 6. “Our goal this year is to improve every match,” said Renninger. “The focus this season is to get ready for the PAC tournament.”

Scott Renninger is a veteran of the Westminster College Department of Athletics as he enters his 36th year as either a coach or an administrator. The 2013-14 academic year marks Renninger’s 15th year as head coach of the men’s tennis team and his ninth as head coach of the women’s squad. He owns a 74-138 (.349) record as men’s coach and a 102-41 (.713) mark as women’s coach. Renninger, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year for three straight years from 2006-08, led the Titan women to its first PAC Championship in school history in the 2012-13 season. Prior to that, the Titans were runner-ups at the PAC Championships six-straight seasons, including the 2011-12 team that set the school record for wins in a season with a perfect 18-0 record. Over the past four years, the women have won 90% (64-7) of their overall matches and 91% (32-3) of their conference matches. As the Titan men’s coach, Renninger led the team to an improvement in wins in each of his first three seasons including the 2002 team that went 10-6, a win total that was duplicated by the 2004 team that went 10-9. Two of Renninger’s men’s teams (2004, 2006) placed second in the PAC. Renninger has served on the Titan coaching staff since arriving in New Wilmington in 1978. He served as an assistant coach for the Titan football team from that time until 2004, working with both the offensive line and special teams while also serving as administrative assistant for the program. In 1999, he served as interim co-head football coach with Sean Kelly when then-head coach Gene Nicholson took a medical leave of absence. Renninger also served as head baseball coach at Westminster for 21 seasons from 1979-99, compiling a career record of 253-284-3 (.471). A 1966 graduate of Heidelberg, Renninger and his wife, Phyllis, live in New Wilmington. They have three children: Angie (a 1997 Westminster graduate), Scooter, and T.J. (a 2008 Westminster graduate).

“The Standard” By Darwin Huey, former Titan defensive coordinator

It does not appear on the schedule…yet it is the opponent every week. It wears no jersey…yet it appears at each Titan contest. It bears no name…has no press clippings and no video highlights. It is relentless, unyielding, and insistently challenging. For Titan athletes it is a target at which to aim, a target with a bull’s eye of ever-diminishing dimensions. It provides the vision, which enables visualizing, and envisioning. While it is invisible to the spectator, to all who wear Titan Blue and White, it is clearly framed in the mind’s eye. Every Titan knows that when they don the gear adorned with the “W”, they also don the expectations of the Titan Tradition.

The Tradition is built on the STANDARD of expectation against which all Titan players and coaches past, present, and future were, are, and will be measured. It had its birth on an August day in 1952 when Harold Burry’s indomitable spirit and football genius dramatically altered the course of Titan football and subsequently all Titan athletics. Since that day the STANDARD has only been raised higher...it brooks no compromise. It is individual technique, team strategy, and absolute principles…born of coaches’ design but edited and polished by the performance of players. The STANDARD is not “success”…as success is a relative concept ranging on the spectrum from victory over weakness to defeat versus greatness. The STANDARD is related to excellence, a concept of constancy; it is unflagging and unwavering in nature. The Titans compete against the STANDARD which stretches, never relents, and always challenges. (adapted from the original football version) 8

The PAC F

ounded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 select private institutions in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky, the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports (10 men, nine women).

estminster College has a proud athletics heritage that is steeped with a tradition of winning. Although the College was founded in 1852, varsity athletics at Westminster did not become prevalent until 1884. Beginning in 1926, the sports teams at Westminster became known as the “Titans,” after a The Original “Towering Titans” of 1926-27 sportswriter for the student newspaper, The Holcad, nicknamed the resurgent basketball team the “Towering Titans” because of younger, taller men that made up the starting lineup. The athletics program at Westminster became best known for the success of its football and men’s basketball teams. The Titan football team won six NAIA National Championships from 1970-94 and 71% (398-157-10) of its games since 1952. The men’s basketball team, honored by the Associated Press as the nation’s top small college team in 1962, was the all-time winningest NAIA team before Westminster joined the NCAA in 1998.

I

n the 2011-12 academic year there were 424 varsity athletes at Westminster, including 45 multi-sport athletes. There are currently 20 varsity sports teams at Westminster that compete in Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) and NCAA Division III. In the last eight years, 11 Westminster teams have either qualified for the NCAA Tournament or sent athletes to the NCAA Championship meet. Westminster joined the NCAA Division III and the PAC in 2000-01 and became eligible for championships and awards in 2002-03.
