www.strode-college.ac.uk Judo gold medal for Strode student

Strode’s A Level Music and German students at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, just one of the sights and experiences that made the visit so `amazing`.

Bringing learning to life in Berlin Strode College A Level Music and German students enjoyed an outstanding educational visit to Berlin in February, designed by their teachers to enhance their studies. The Music students were enthralled and inspired by four world-class professional concerts. A flute recital given by Jelka Weber showcased some exciting early 20th century repertoire by Lili Boulanger, while a contemporary jazz quintet played some dynamic new material by Swiss lead-tenor sax player Tobias Meinhart. The students also enjoyed a night at the opera to see a deeply emotive performance of ‘Salome’ by Richard Strauss and the week was brought to a stirring climax with a performance of two symphonies (Hindemith and Berlioz) by the Berlin Philharmonic. Strode’s A Level German students used their time to discover the history and culture of the fascinating city of Berlin. A visit to the Stasi Museum opened their eyes to life behind the Berlin Wall and they visited the Olympic Stadium, scene not just of the 1936 Olympics, but also of some of Hitler’s major pre-war rallies. A stroll along the East Side Gallery allowed the students to see some of the remaining parts of the wall, now covered in artworks by artists from all over the world. The wonderful music combined with visits to the historic sights of the city made for a memorable trip which, in the words of music student Jerome Moore, was “simply amazing”.

Seventeen year old Corrine Foot, who studies A Levels at Strode College, recently won the gold medal in the British Schools Judo Qualifier competition in London, securing her place in the Strode student Corrine Foot, finals which took place in is thrilled with her gold medal. Sheffield on 8th March. Students from schools and colleges across the UK competed in the qualifier competition with Corrine facing five other competitors in her age group. Corrine, who lives in Castle Cary and previously attended King Arthur’s School, is a member of the Shepton Mallet Judo Club where she has trained since she was aged five. She was delighted with her win and when interviewed at the time said:“I am thrilled to have won the gold medal. I have been competing for five years and due to the experience I have gained, I found this competition a lot easier than I thought it would be. I’m now looking forward to the finals in Sheffield and I am in training for the Dutch Cup in Amsterdam.” Following her gold medal success at the regional finals, Corinne achieved a silver medal at the National Schools finals for judo. Well done Corinne!

Formula 1 in schools – Students winning car takes them to the national finals The `F1 in Schools` regional Strode A Level students Alexander Hurr (Wells), James Proud finals took place at Exeter (Glastonbury) and Alex Willsher University recently and a (Westhay) won a place in the national team of A Levels students finals of the F1 in Schools competition. from Strode College were delighted to come away with three prizes and a place in the national finals. The global competition requires teams to use CAD and CAM software to design, analyse, manufacture and race miniature compressed air powered balsa wood F1 cars. Teams have to raise their own sponsorship and manage their budget to fund research, travel and accommodation. Strode College’s team `Venom` won awards for `Best Engineered Car`, `Best Team Sponsorship and Marketing` and `Best Rookie Team’. The team consisted of Alex Willsher (from Westhay), James Proud and Daniel Rolls (from Glastonbury), Danny Betts (from Stone) and Alexander Hurr (from Wells). They are studying a wide range of A Levels at Strode including Physics, Maths, DT, Computing, Business, English, French, Geology, History, Music and Music Technology, giving them a winning combination of knowledge and skills. They were also supported in the competition by the DT department at St Dunstan’s School, where four of the team previously studied. The Strode F1 in Schools team won `Best Rookie Team` at the National Finals. Well done team! College switchboard 01458 844400 College Fax 01458 844411.

“Best thing since sliced bread” It’s been a tough time for wildlife over the past few months due to flooding and amongst those animals that have really struggled are badgers. One lucky little badger cub has found safety and warmth at Secret World Wildlife Rescue after the mother was accidentally disturbed after panels were moved near Shepton Mallet. The plucky little cub is the first badger cub of 2014 and his timely arrival after recent reports of the badger culling trials last year, has given hope to staff and volunteers at the centre. The cub has been called “Hovis” after a member of the public involved with his rescue described the size of the badger as a similar size to a Hovis loaf of bread. For Secret World, which rescues over 5,000 injured and orphans annually, the arrival of the orphan signifies the beginning of a busy season which sees the centre take in hundreds of birds and mammals during the spring and summer.

www.westonandworleview.co.uk

Pauline Kidner charity founder has, for the time being, become foster mum to Hovis and said “After Mothers’ Day and Easter coming up, we are hoping people will treat family members to a unique gift by adopting a badger, owl, fox, otter or hedgehog” The adoption pack includes a beautiful soft toy, facts about the animal, certificate and updates throughout the year. The money raised through animal adoptions helps care for the wildlife that is brought into the centre

Early indicator of the cost of flooding Somerset County Council anticipates it will submit a claim for around ÂŁ2 million to the Government for costs incurred during the floods crisis. The amount of funding the authority is likely to apply for under the Bellwin Scheme was revealed at a Cabinet meeting in March. Full details are to be confirmed. However, it was revealed that Somerset County Council will not be charged by the military for their assistance. Councillors also praised council staff for working long hours, sometimes in dangerous conditions to help people affected by the floods.

Nearly 600 families helped and national target smashed A national target has been smashed by the Somerset Troubled Families Programme as nearly 600 families in crisis are helped in two year. Government gave all local authorities a target to turn around the lives of 40 per cent of families identified as ‘troubled’within two years. Somerset has beaten the target, turning around the lives of 580 families, 67 per cent of the 870 families identified in the county. This success means that the Somerset Troubled Families Programme has been awarded £475,500 in ‘success money’, which will help the team support even more families. Cllr Frances Nicholson, Cabinet Member for Children and Families, said:“It is fantastic to hear that 580 families have been helped to move towards a more independent and satisfying way of life. This has been made possible because of the hard work and dedication of staff from Somerset County Council, District Councils, the Police, and a wide range of other public and voluntary sector organisations. “The‘success money’will help us widen our

programme even further and help many more families into healthier, happier, more fulfilled lives. “Plus each family where we help to break a cycle of dependence on public services saves the public sector a huge amount of money.” Anonymous Case study from Somerset Troubled Families Programme: Mr and Mrs D’s son was frequently missing college. A Family Focus Support Worker worked with their son and the college to make sure he was enrolled on the correct course for his ability. The Support Worker also contacted the County Council to obtain a bus pass for the young person and work out a payment plan for the family. Plus the Support Worker made sure the young person had appropriate clothing and items and made links with a Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) who arranged for his start at college to be staggered. SENCO said:“We have seen a remarkable change in the young person.” His college mentor said:“The young person is a joy to work with and a completely different person from last college year.” Mrs D said:“So happy to see my son enjoying college and doing so well.”
